I was chasing 3D2EU on 80m this morning and ran into this problem — sub receiver turned on, but the right headphone went dead. I was trying to hook up the Line Out to see if I was getting audio there, when I went ahead and pressed the memory 4 button to send my call again. Lo and behold, the sub-receiver came alive again in the right headphone again when the rig stopped transmitting. If anyone has insight into this intermittent problem, I’d appreciate it. Apparently transmitting “fixes” it. I’m also going to see if the line out has audio when the sub receiver is active, but the headset is not. (3D2EU got really strong just after sunrise, but I didn’t manage to work him on 80m. Next time.) [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3 audio cuts out.
I’ve been experiencing an issue with my K3, and I’m wondering how to troubleshoot it. Here’s the symptom. Often, when I’m trying to work a weak DX station, I’ll switch the sub receiver off and on, so I can better hear the DX station, then to try and hunt for the station he’s working. Lately, after switching a few times, the sub receiver audio will go dead. Changing the sub receiver volume makes no difference, it’s just not there. Once it does this, switching the sub receiver off and on does nothing. The audio does not come back until I power off the K3 and power it back on. Any one else experience this? [Elecraft] K3 KRX3 Install.....
Recently finished the install of the KRX3 receiver and two KSYN3A synthesizers in my K3. I have had the 2nd receiver sitting in its box too long, but family problems was the priority the last year or so. When the new KSYN3a came out, it looked like a good option to install also. My K3 was a factory assembled unit, so the only opening up of it previously was to install a few optional filters, a simple task. I had read a number of sub-receiver installs on the web, so I knew I was going to have to dig down into the radio a little further. Fortunately, as I proceeded, the install was smooth. Pulling off and then reinstalling the front panel was simple. Assembling the sub-receiver was pretty simple also. As I got everything ready to start the final effort to install the rather large sub-receiver into the K3, I wondered how I was going to fit it in the space, line up two multi-pin DC/control connectors, push a few coax’s out of the way and line up two holes for the two hold-down screws that go thru the sub- receiver assy. Although this sounds complicated, it really was not, especially if you slightly tilt the sub-receiver toward the front mating dc/control connector and then start lowering it slowly into the space. Elecraft did a good job of getting everything built precisely so that the fit is precise but easily accomplished. Worth waiting for! [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 rave
Perhaps, I would like to share some experience. I set VFO A&B 'LINK' and use both main and sub receivers receiving the same frequency. Even both receivers are using the same 'main' antenna, I notice a much earier copying of the signal. By turning and balancing the outer and inner knob of the AF control, I can find a sweet splot for my ear listening and hence easier copying. I cannot explain this within my limited radio knowledge but it does help me a lot. 73 Johnny VR2XMC 寄件人︰ Richard Thorne 收件人︰ elecraft@mailman.qth.net 傳送日期︰ 2014年04月18日 (週五) 10:31 PM 主題︰ Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 rave When I purchased my K3 I also ordered the sub receiver, all was good. [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 low on gain
Hello. For a while now I've had the feeling that my sub-receiver has been a bit 'quiet', when compared to the main Rx, requiring its AF gain to be cranked up to compensate. However, I'd not really worried too much about this as its ability to hear weak signals was not impaired. Yesterday, I finally got round to measuring the audio levels coming out of my K3 and found the following: 1) The audio output of the KRX3 was -16dB compared with the main Rx (AGC inoperative, 5uV from signal generator). 2) The -16dB disparity was there regardless of which KRX3 antenna input was in use. 3) The problem is neither band nor mode dependant. 4) The problem occurs with both the 2.7kHz and 400Hz roofing filters. 4) When listening to a 'real' signal the KRX3 is operating lower down the AGC characteristic than the main Rx. 5) Adjusting the individual filter gains did not do enough to compensate. The fact that my KRX3 is not 'deaf', but just low on gain, suggests that its front-end is OK and that the fault is further down the chain. The AGC observations, in turn, suggest to me that the gain deficit is occurring after the front-end, but before the point at which AGC is derived (and not in the audio stages). I have already removed and re-installed the KRX3 and its leads, but to no effect. Before I resort to a serious stripping-down of the K3, does anyone have any experience of a similar fault, please? 73, de Phil, GJ4CBQ. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 installed and ERR VCO / ERR PL1
Even though it's quite embarrassing, I wanted to let folks know about the resolution of this issue. It's also great to have my problem and solution live in perpetuity on the list in case someone else has this issue arise when they are adding their KRX3. To recap, the issue I had was that neither my main nor my aux KSYN3 would complete the calibration procedure if there was a KSYN3 installed in the aux slot. If there was just a KSYN3 installed in the main slot, everything was hunky dory. I tried adding DeoxIT to the slots where the main and aux KSYN3 are installed. That made it easier to remove/replace the units, but didn't help the main problem at all. I checked the voltage at J1 and J2 of the KREF3 board, and they were both within range (a little over .9V). I double-checked to make sure that all the TMP cables were in place, and that all the plug-in modules were aligned correctly. *Finally*, I checked the bottom of the board one last time, especially the work I had recently completed (a couple of upgrades and adding a resistor to change the value at R91). My error was in the resistor didn't have a good soldering joint at the point where the leaded add-on 27 ohm resistor was added and where the 100 ohm SMT resistor was previously. I reflowed solder there, and then voila, the rig will complete the calibration procedure for both KSYN3 modules! When I was checking the resistance before, I think I was inadvertently pushing the leaded resistor against the SMT resistor, thus making a connection (albeit temporary) and showing the expected value of 27 ohms. D'oh! Thanks again to Gary and everyone on the list for their assistance. I'm looking forward to playing around a bit with the newly upgraded K3 this weekend. 73 -john W4PAH Madison, WI On Wed, Sep 5, 2012 at 11:35 PM, John Shadle wrote: > Hi, > I completed the installation of my KRX3 this evening (and upgraded the > DSP board on my main RX, too). > > When I first turned the unit on, I received ERR PL1. Hi, I completed the installation of my KRX3 this evening (and upgraded the DSP board on my main RX, too). When I first turned the unit on, I received ERR PL1. This cleared out, then I tried to calibrate the synthesizers. First, I tried the SUB. It went through its procedure and then returned E 5 ERR VCO. I did the same thing with the main synthesizer, and received the same result. I did have to add the 27 ohm resistor (tested the resistance afterwards, and it was as expected--around 27 ohms instead of 100 ohms). I also added the jumper wire for automatic front-end protection. I do have an older K3 (S/N 110), so perhaps that's to blame...? Hello Sam, Just a bit of construction hint for you. If you experience birdies in 10m or 6m, do try to reposition or move a bit of the TMP, then you can get rid of most of the birdies. Also, the KSYN3 of the KRX3 has to be re-calibrate as per K3 owner manual. Enjoy your dual RX K3 which is the smallest radio with such an ability at this moment. I had missed the sentence in the step that said: install TMP cable from KSYN3 J83 to KREF3 J1 (I wondered why I had 2 left over TMP cables) duh but hey, there were different configuration options possible, I just figured they had to do with the 'other' ways to wire things up. *NOT* I'd mention that all happened about the same time, as my sisters phone call, but that would just be making excuses, wouldn't it. >_sigh_< http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3, KRX3 Install
After the first reading of the installation instructions, I procrastinated for some time before attempting the installation of the Sub RX and a couple of other options (K3EXREF & KAT3). It seemed as if one would have take the K3 almost all apart to undertake this installation. However I'd initially put the K3 together with relative ease, thanks to the excellent instructions and the outstanding mechanical design. So with some trepidation (I'm a few months away from my 8th decade), I reread the instructions a couple of more times (measure twice cut once) and took screwdriver and long nose in hand and attacked the job. Well the task went exceedingly well and I finished it in only about 2/3 the time and half the effort that I expected. Now to check it out and try to understand all the nuances of making the mods work ! 73, Chuck, W7CS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 or P3 for CW DXing? [was: ZL8X - K3 firmware]
Looks like about 85% of the advice I've received is in favor of adding the KRX3 first, and I agree with that. But I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this benefit as well: The other good reason (IMO) for adding the KRX3 first -- and setting it up as VFO B to listen to the DX station, while listening to the pileup with the main receiver on VFO A -- is because if you do it that way, you can use the new super-fast QSK option, which is AWESOME, except that you can't work a split pileup with it on a single receiver. This makes it kinda useless for DXing. And if you want to send at the same reasonable speed that the DX station is sending (usually 25-35 WPM), the existing QSK modes that do work with split VFOs on a single receiver don't really let you hear the DX station between code elements at those speeds, only between characters or sometimes just between words, depending on a number of variables. So, I really do want to be able to use the new super-fast QSK mode, and that requires the KRX3. That pretty much tips the scales for me. It also means I can easily hook up CW SKIMMER on the main receiver's IF output port and monitor the pileup, with the K3 transmitter following automatically. Sounds like the way to go. Thanks to all, but feel free to continue the thread. I've changed the subject line as somebody else suggested. Using VFO B on the DX frequency and A on the pileup frequency (and TX) is very simple. The mod is nice if you want to use Sub while running on the Main in contests but that's not the question that was asked. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ZL8X-K3-firmware-tp5763553p5763605.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

When BSET > is not activated I don't see any indication of the sub's antenna > selection. This is correct. The LCD icons show what antenna is selected for the main receiver (and transmitter). If the sub RX is sharing the same antenna path, then the icons are valid for the sub as well. If the sub is set to "AUX", then the sub's antenna source can be checked using BSET. There is one other important point: the sub's antenna setting is stored separately for diversity and non-diversity. In practice, this means that you may rarely need to change the sub's antenna selection for a given band. 73, Wayne N6KR > > What am I missing? [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3 Aux Ant Indicator
I just installed my KRX3 a few days ago and am still figuring out how it all works. I don't understand how to see which antenna the sub receiver is using without having to select BSET or press and hold the RX ANT to select MAIN or AUX. The manual says "When MAIN is in effect, the 1-2 and RX icons show which antenna the sub is sharing with the main receiver. When AUX is in effect, these icons will all be off (if CONFIG:KRX3 is set for ANT=BNC)" However, this is only true if BSET is activated. When BSET is not activated I don't see any indication of the sub's antenna selection. What am I missing? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 install
I've sent a bunch of replies and they all went to the individuals instead of going to the reflector. Sorry about that folks. Yes, the power cycle did fix part of my problem. I could then see the SUB come on. I also encountered an ERR PL2 error code. I had to go in and re-calibrate the VCO for the sub receiver. I had somehow messed that up. Whenever I pressed the ATU TUNE button I would get an ERR TXF error. Looked that up and figured out that I was transmitting on the wrong bandwidth for CW. There is an awful lot to do when setting up 10 filters for the K3 and the SUB receiver. I finally got it all correct I think, but I still had no audio for the SUB receiver. After reading the instructions I realized that I had to set the number of speakers to ONE, and then I had audio as well as receive signal from the SUB receiver. I need to get some stereo speakers. I have more reading to do. [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 Overload Protection on 160M
An antenna system for 160M with separate 2M diameter shielded receiving loop is to be set up at a temporary location. The transmitter will run 500W. There will not be much time for experimenting so I would like to know what problems we may encounter. How much isolation (distance) is required between the main transmitting antenna and the receiving loop? Is there any isolation difference between wiring the sub receiver for BNC or via the KAT3? I am wired for BNC at the moment but that can be changed. 73 Tony Fegan VE3QF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Greg, you just made my day. I have warned many owners about this problem but in the meantime I must have forgotten about the sub RX antenna selection issue. As I have not operated on 12/10 since installing the sub RX it was an easy oversight. [Elecraft] [K3] - KRX3 not working on 12/10
Hi group, Running K3 S/N 0192 here. Installed my KRX3 last autumn and up until now all has been working well. Of course I've only been operating on the lower bands during winter. I just noticed that my KRX3 does not work on 12 and 10 metres. Not sure about 6m since I don't have a dedicated 6m antenna up yet. I can clearly hear signals in my main receiver on 12 and 10 but when I switch the KRX3 on my right earpiece goes silent on these bands save for some thermal noise. Has this phenomenon anything to do with the known synthesizer ALC calibration problem as described in the application note "K3 Synthesizer ALC" Rev A, dated December 23, 2008? I would appreciate some info before I start heating up the soldering iron. Thanks for any info. 73 Glenn ON4WIX / OR4W __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 KRX3 ANT
Evert, Yes, I believe using the AUX RF BNC is the preferred solution for your case. If the main receiver will be on a lower frequency than the sub, the low pass filters will be set for the main RX/TX and would severely attenuate the higher frequency input to the Sub RX. It may make your external antenna connections or switching scheme a bit more complex, but it is one of the compromises that one must make when tuning different bands with one transceiver. 73, Don W3FPR Evert Bakker (PA2KW) wrote: > I'm installing my KRX3 now and trying to figure out which configuration to > install. > > After reading the KRX3 manual and the K3 manual and looking at the pictures > on page 40 (K3 manual), > > > > I do have KAT3 and KXV3 installed. > > I do have a separate RX antenna for the low bands. > > I want to use the SUB-RX on the higher bands together with the main RX with > the same antenna and accept an increase of the NF by 3 dB. > > > > Do I need the AUX RF BNC installed? > > > > 73's, Evert PA2KW > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 KRX3 ANT
You do not need to hook up the aux cable. You may wish to do so for future use. You might want to listen on a beverage for the lowbands on one receiver and your tribander on 20m so in that case you would want both. You can select which antenna to use in the menu, main or aux. Got it now! Thanks to all who responded directly and so quickly. Finally got through this think skull of mine! 73 de Terry, WØFM ___ I am completing the installation of my KRX3. I am electing to share the selected antenna (ANT-1 or ANT-2) with the sub receiver. I have the KAT3 installed. Do I still need to connect the 12 TMP cable between the KRX3 and J92 on the KAT3, or is this connection made somewhere else in the circuitry? On page 37 of my KRX3 installation manual (Rev. A) it states If installed, attach the antenna cable connected to either the KAT3 or to the AUX RF BNC jack on the rear panel to J92 at the end of the KRX3 as shown. I DO have the KAT3 installed, but am confused if this cable is REQUIRED for the sub receiver to work at all, or if this step is referencing the option to Installing the Auxiliary KRX3 Antenna Input Via the KAT3 which I have elected to pass on. I dont see any other way of the signal getting from the ANT connection on the back of the rig to the sub receiver, but, then again, there are a number of multi-pin connections on the sub receiver. Terry, You only need to connect a TMP cable to J92 on the KRX3 if you want to use an auxiliary input for the KRX3 ( either via the BNC connector that comes with the KRX3 or via the KAT3 antenna terminal that is not being used for the main RX and TX, you can use only one of these options ). [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3/Main receiver isolation
Just curious... Anyone know any numbers describing signal isolation between the 2 receivers? Playing with Spectrogram indicates -70dB but can't say how much if any of that is cross talk in the cable or soundcard (SB Audigy). The signal in the sub rx channel of LINE OUT is seen and measured when the sub is 'Off'; if the sub is thereby de-powered and isolated the sigals observed are presumably due to passive leakage?? Not found anything in manuals/elecraft.com and got bored googling for channel isolation in the soundcard 73, Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---KRX3-Main-receiver-isolation-tp2280082p2280082.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 KRX3 B SET and FREQ ENT
I wanted to set the KRX3 to one frequency and the main RX to another. So I had the SUB RX set and wanted to set main, so I used M-V M1 to recall a frequency for main, but that set SUB RX to some random frequency I happened to have in VFO B the day I programmed M-V M1. I thought, no problem I'll use B SET. So I did B SET FREQ ENT but it doesn't seem to allow direct entry of the SUB RX. The M-V behavior isn't unexpected but I was surprised that B SET FREQ ENT didn't work. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 Installation R91 mod
Thank you all for the great suggestions. The rest of the installation went well except for one hitch that Bill had mentioned about the tabs on the KRX3 PCB. In my case, I tried to get it to fit but found that all of the tabs running from the front to back (right and left sides looking from the front of the K3) were offset by almost 1/8" to the rear. All of the other tabs (front and rear) matched just fine in the shield. I filed the side tabs down and everything fit FB. The setup went without a hitch and I'm sitting hear playing with it and wishing I had a vertical outside right now to play around with some diversity reception ;-) Thanks again for the suggestions and hopefully this thread will help someone else down the road. 73, Dave W8FGU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Ron's 3rd hint is very important! Keep some handy. Put some on the solderwick when trying to remove components or clear holes. If that little spool of solder wick is more than a few months old the flux in it has dried out and all you are doing is heating the board/lifting the pad. I don't know how kosher it is but I keep a tin of rosin-flux paste and dip the tip of the iron it and then re-dress the tip at the start of each evenings work. It seems like these newer plated tips (that you find on the temp-controlled models) don't hold their tinning and get a build up of invisable corrosion. With the older copper tips it was quite obvious they needed re-tinning. *** Don't use plumbing solder paste on your PCB. *** Rich, KE0X Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: > > > 3) A very small amount of rosin is very handy if you want to avoid adding > solder. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 Installation R91 mod
If you've got the right resistance across R91, you're good! Golly Dave, never be embarrassed to stumble over a problem. To paraphrase an old saying, "If you haven't damaged a trace, you haven't worked on enough pc boards..." That pad was chosen because trying to solder directly to the IC with it's very close spaced leads is much harder, so you're soldering skills are quite redeemed for having succeeded! You bring to the group a good lesson though: work for performance, not "pretty". When reworking boards it's quite easy to get all caught up in a beautiful solder joint that looks like the original production soldering (which was done by machines on perfect boards) and end up messing about too much. In your case the only damage was minor to a trace. Too much heat can damage I.C.s and even resistors like the one shown. You don't always get really smooth flow all over the pad. All you care about is good flow into the existing solder joint. Note the left end of the added resistor. You can see that the solder there did not completely flow to the edge of the pad although it flowed well into the existing solder. Leaving it like that comes directly from experiences like yours :-) Here are few things for everyone to be aware of when doing changes like this: 1) If you notice that you're having more trouble than you recall in the past getting good solder flow, check your iron. Many temperature-controlled irons are actually measuring the temperature of the heating element and corrosion building up where the tip connects can drastically reduce the amount of heat reaching the tip. As you know, if it takes more than two or three seconds for the solder to melt, the tip is not hot enough, no matter what the temperature setting says. 2) A tiny dab of solder added to the old joint and fresh "tinning" of the new lead before trying to join them help a lot. You end up "sweating" the two fresh solder joints together when you connect and heat them. You still need a little fresh solder, but more for its rosin to deoxidize the surfaces than for additional solder. 3) Solder does not smoke. The puff of smoke that commonly rises when soldering a joint is the rosin burning away. When that happens there's no more rosin cleaning the surfaces. If the solder is molten, fine, but if not there's nothing left to clean it until you add more solder and rosin. That's why it's so easy to get too much solder on small joints and why it's so important to use fine solder. I generally use 0.015" solder for this work, and *never* anything bigger that 0.031" solder. 3) A very small amount of rosin is very handy if you want to avoid adding solder. Rosin pens that dispense a tiny drop are perfect for this but even a bottle is fine if you use a tooth pick or bit of wire to add a drop just before soldering. Rosin in pens and bottles are available from many on-line resources and (for the lucky ones with one nearby) most electronics supply houses. But, I then thought maybe someone else could benefit from my experience and public humility ;-) I have an early serial number #338 and needed to make the modification to R91 on the RF board as described on page 21 of the KRX3 Installation Manual. In doing so, I was having a hard time getting the 27 ohm resistor lead to tack onto the (looking at Figure 20) right pad of R91. I made multiple attempts and couldn't get a clean connection until I eventually lifted the pad. I was using a small but short soldering tip at 720 degrees. In my zeal to get a nicer connection, I simply played around with it too long and with too much heat, lifted the pad. Using a longer, narrower tip (as I am now) would probably have worked better. After the horror and high emotion subsided, I sat down to figure out what could be done and hence a question as to my solution. Looking at the schematic for the RF board, it looks like the only connection to the right pad of R91 is pin 14 of U7. Does that seem correct to anyone else? I removed R91 and was able to solder a 22 ohm 1/8 watt resistor to the remaining trace of pin 14 of U7 and the pad next to R91 as outlined in the directions. DMM measurements between U7 pin 14 and the left pad of R91 show 22 ohms, so I'm pretty sure I was able to salvage the situation. I will continue with the installation this morning, but would like some concurrence that what I've done looks correct to someone else's eyes before I power this beast back up. No problem at all adding the washers to the KSYN3 board - it 'looks' much better with the additional spacers - now it sits parallel to the shield. My K3 is a bit newer than yours (S/N 00929) and fortunately already had the proper resistor on the RF board. I was not looking forward to making that change. I will pass along one observation - you will get into this when you place the KRX3 board into the lower half of the shield box. There are break-off tabs around the perimeter of the KRX3 board. These are supposed to line up with holes in the side of the lower shield. The tabs on the left side of the KRX3 are no where near the holes left = as the board will sit in the K3. Reading further along in the instructions it mentions filing the tabs as needed to ensure the board does not cause the sides of the lower shield to expand too much & mess with the fit of the upper half. I ended up filing ALL the tabs flush. After noting that the tabs on the left did not match the holes, I filed them off and proceeded to fit the board into the lower cover. I felt it was just too tight, in fact had a heck of a time getting it out. After filing all the tabs flush it was still a snug fit, but the top cover went on perfectly. Another minor hitch... cycle the K3 power after you enable the KRX3 and update the firmware. I really don't know if it was the KRX3 enable or the KDVR3 I installed at the same time, but my K3 went a little batty after loading the DSP2 firmware & a power cycle fixed it right up. Oh - don't forget the mod to the KSYN3 board, my original board needed the mod! Easy one, no SMT!!(smile).. I did have one minor encounter with Mr. Murphy of Murphy's Law fame. As I started to learn and listen on the KRX3, I gave the AF gain a twist and the knob split in half. I found a knob I had sal

Thank you to all who replied to my problem regarding the non-operation of the front panel microphone after I installed the KRX3. Hi Barry, Do make sure that BOTH connectors between the Front Panel and DSP boards are mated. If you have the connector with the single row of pins out of it's socket then the Front Panel mic socket will not work. So far, I have managed to achieve this TWICE ! 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Thu, 22 Jan 2009 09:46:19 -, Barry Simpson wrote: > I have just completed the installation of a KRX3 into my K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 & KRX3 Fantastic in ARRL 160 M!
Ed, I agree with your evaluation completely - There is not a more demanding contest for a receiver than the 160M CW. I was BLOWN AWAY by the unbelieveable performance of my K3. I don't have the sub rcvr (yet) but your write up is quite convincing. I am about 100 Mi from the W8JI contest station and I was able to qso very weak stations within 200Hz of Tom's 60 over nine sigs - He was clean as a pin and my 250Hz filter made it like he wasn't there! Amazing! I have a local ham who was running with the legal limit about a mile away and I did not know he was on until I stumbled across him while doing SAP. My old rig would desense and go to pieces when he fired up! You sounded like a local here as well! 73 Gill W4RYW Ed Gray W0SD wrote: > > How the K3 and KRX3 did in the 160M ARRL Contest: > > The K3 and KRX3 are amazing radio's and don't let anybody tell you they > are not. [Elecraft] K3 & KRX3 Fantastic in ARRL 160 M!
How the K3 and KRX3 did in the 160M ARRL Contest: W0DB operated W0SD in the ARRL 160M contest. To make the top 10 last year and this year we just live to far west so we just can't work the DX multipliers like they can to the east of us. We are a long ways from JA as well and the activity out of the PAC was terrible so we got no help there!!! Anyway the totals were 1638 Q's and 104M of which 79 were ARRL Sections. We just got the K3 with the KRX3 and bi-directional beverages, rcv. loop and low rcv dipole put together just before the contest. For transmit we had 1/4 wave vertical with 135 radials and a drooping dipole at 195 feet. We used the K3 with the Rcv antennas with a switch between RX ANT and AUX RF. We could switch the rcv antenna's to the Aux RF for diversity. We also used the sub unlinked to hunt for multipliers using the main antenna. For next year we are going to put up another high dipole cross ways to the present one as one of the rec antenna's so it can be used in diversity reception with the vertical. That was the one combination we were missing. To give you an idea of how good the K3 & KRX3 are the 1638 Q's is 3rd high in the single op high power listings showing the ability of the K3 with the KRX3 to hear. Actually only two multi-op stations have more Q'S as well. Considering many of the east coast station had 300+ EU qsos and we only had a handful shows the ability of the K3 & KRX3 and Joe's ability to pull them out. The other bad thing was Joe was only able to work 4 JA's rather than the hoped for 100. Yes the antenna's are a significant factor BUT you have to have a the radio that can take advantage of the antennas to survive!!! I don't know of anything more "BRUTAL" than the QRM on 160M with nearly everyone packed in 40 khz. There were times Joe had the DSP to 50 hz with the 200 hz roofing filter and could still hear 3 signals. The other amazing things is that at times we have a little power line noise on the SE beverage and the K3 NB is just awesome. Every radio I have ever used when you get strong signals you have problems with the NB. We did not notice any problem at all!!! I was not going to but now there is no question I am going to get another KRX3 for the other K3 as it just adds so much to the radio!!! One thing Joe told me was to "NOT" use functions on the K3 and KRX3 when transmitting. The radio does not like that and did strange things. You might say why would you do that? When you are working that many q's an hour and have things going on in both ears and have 9 antenna switches to deal with plus knobs on the radio to work with you only have free time while transmitting so you think I need to make this change so I will do it now but it does not work! Thankfully you can make rcv antenna changes while transmitting. The K3 and KRX3 are amazing radio's and don't let anybody tell you they are not. I read a lot of stuff on here that is based on opinion. This report is based on actually on the air results in the "REAL WORLD"! IMHO you can place a lot of confidence in reports such as these in making a decision about buying a K3 and KRX3!!! I tried this on the K3 Utility, and the Field Test feedback was that the right-to-left order was "weird". So I just put in a note in Help that the figures are right to left as viewed from the front of the K3. The XFIL icons on the front panel are also left to right, which was further support to putting the K3 Utility columns in a 1-5 order. You will have noise and the sub controls will work but you are not hearing any signals. I know what I am going to write sounds simplistic but read on there is more to it than one would think. I am well aware of filter placement as I have put together two K3's and as I was putting the KRX3 together my XYL Edith W0OE mentioned the manual information that the widest filter needs to be first. It does not have to be in FL1 but it has to be first. I told her "THANKS I AM AWARE OF THAT"! How I did it I will never know but I proceeded to start with the wide filter in FL5 and then FL4, FL3, FL2 leaving FL1 open. Somehow in turning the board back and forth I messed up. What makes this more tricky than the filters on the main board of the K3? First of course the top shield soon covers your mistake. Secondly what make it even more tricky with the KRX3 the K3 only checks for correct filter placement in the main rig for the FLTX settings that affect the transmitter and mode (ERR TXF for example). In the SUB, it is solely up to you to get them right. Thirdly what really fooled me was I used the K3 utility and made changes to the KRX3 filters and changed things on FL1 in the KRX3 and sent them to the radio. I also set the filters up from the CONFIG setting so everything appears to be fine but in fact there was no filter at all in FL1 so the "ONLY" way to figure it out is to visually look at the filter placements. That is the only way to find this mistake in the KRX3 other than starting to trace the rcv signal which I was about ready to to. BTW Elecraft support has an excellent test procedure for this. The good news is when I pulled the top shield off I spotted the wrong filter placement instantly and just could not believe I made a stupid mistake like that. I took 4.5 hours with a break to put the KRX3 together and still made the mistake! I think when you know something you can easily become careless. I also got ERR VC4 E 00039 which required an adjustment of T1 windings on the sub synth board. Don't do this without instructions on how to do it. That problem was not my fault. It is just one of those things and was a real easy fix. Others have commented on the front panel removal! I concur it is not a big deal. The only thing that I would emphasize is when you put in the BNC for the Aux RF to note the instruction about "NOT" taking out the one screw. I dropped the stand off down in the radio and it took a lot of messing to get it out!!! After having the KRX3 board with the shield on in and out of the radio more times than I care to mention you eventually find you can get the cables routed quite nicely out of the way. At first it does not seem so but keep adjusting things as the cables can be placed so it comes in and out easily. BTW I was reading the KDVR3 manual and the front panel steps are basically the same as the KRX3 removal of the front panel. What a mad rush to get things working with the KRX3 on Thursday and then working right up until the 160 meter contest to get the two new bi-directional beverages hooked up and get everything interfaced to the K3 and try and learn how to use the RX antenna "AND" the sub-rcv "AND" diversity and provide some additional protection from RF getting into the radio. We had a whole 30 minutes to spare! Joe W0DB is operating here at W0SD and he has a lot of choices. It is so impressive what the K3 with the sub and with all the filters can do. The noise blanker also works the best of anything I have every used. The two best previously was the TR-4 years ago when mobile and the FT-1000B. Not only does it take out the noise it handles the strong signals with ease!!! I never seen anything like it. In this case for CW we are using the 500 hz and 200 hz on the main board and on the sub. Joe was down to 50 hz with the DSP and we still had QRM. Given I am told 50 hz is about the best you can do with your head the QRM on 160 meters in the contest is something to behold!!! I have had Collins line, Drake Line, ICOM, FT-1000D, TS-950SDX, etc. This is truly the greatest radio I have ever owned. With the KRX3 installed and the KXV3 the flexibility for antenna switching and diversity reception of signals is something not found anywhere. We have a switch so we can use the 7 rcv antennas either as rcv antennas to the RX in on the KXV3 or we can use them on the AUX RF in for the sub or sub using diversity. There are other ideas we have but this is all we had time for getting everything going. [Elecraft] K3 KRX3 with only 6kHz filter
I know that the K3 needs a 2.7 or 2.8 filter so it can transmit CW and SSB, but I don't see that applying for the KRX3. [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 Antenna Flexibility
I believe many are now receiving their KRX3s and are about to discover the amazing benefits of True Diversity with the K3. As some of you know, I love to chase DX on 160 and will only say Diversity is something I will never be without. I typically use a directional 3-el vertical array on transmit and a Beverage in the same direction on receive. In Diversity mode, I use my TX antenna on Main and the Beverage on Sub. Sometimes it's absolutely amazing to hear signals switching back and forth between ears in <1 second! I'm sure these signals would exhibit extreme QSB if listening on one antenna by itself. Although the K3 has an effective switching system for most use, there's one situation which I've run across which needs an external solution. This is the (somewhat unusual) case when a signal will be present on only one of the antennas being used in Diversity. I found I wanted a quick way to switch out of Diversity, so that either the TX or RX antenna alone would be applied to both ears. Otherwise I'm feeding extraneous noise with no signal to one of my ears. A simple solution to this is to use an external splitter for the Beverage input. This should be a Magic-T splitter (not just a T-connector) which preserves impedance and isolation between the two receiver channels. You can either build one yourself (using two ferrite cores and a resistor) or buy a commercial unit (Mini-Circuits ZSC-2-2 or DXE RSC-2 are both ~$50). The Mini-Circuits unit is available in either 50-50 ohm or 75-75 ohm versions and the DXE is 75-75 only. If you make it yourself, you can make one which will match a 75 ohm antenna to the 50 ohm RX inputs of the K3. See W8JI's website for details to roll your own: http://www.w8ji.com/combiner_and_splitters.htm So how does this work? I feed my Beverage to the splitter and then connect its two outputs to RX ANT and AUX RF. When I want Diversity, I use my TX antenna (ANT1) on Main and the Beverage on AUX RF (the KRX3 allows you to choose either the same antenna as Main or AUX RF). Here are the two cases to switch from Diversity to either the TX array or RX antenna using a splitter. 1. When I want my Beverage on both ears, I simply "tap" RX ANT. To go back to Diversity Mode, I "tap" RX ANT again. 2. When I want my TX array on both ears, I "hold" RX ANT which switches the KRX3 to the same antenna as Main. When I want to return to Diversity, I "hold" RX ANT again. One tap or hold and you instantly can go out of (or back into) Diversity with either your TX or RX antenna in those rare cases when a weak signal may be on only one antenna. There's of course a ~3 dB loss when you use a splitter, but this isn't significant on the low bands since the external noise floor is so far above the noise floor of the K3 (...even if ATT is on). True Diversity in the K3 is a remarkable achievement compared to other rigs costing much more (neither the IC-7800 or Orion has True Diversity). In my configuration, I have it in a rig which cost me ~$2.8k including 6 filters (2 of which are unnecessary for non-contesters, i.e. a 1.8k and 200). If you want to hear some recordings using Diversity, listen to EI6IZ's CW and SSB pileups here: http://ei6iz.com/ (Audio links at the bottom of his KRX3 article, and you really need stereo headphones for the full effect. BTW, I never use anything but headphones for DXing or contesting.) 73, Bill W4ZV -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/-K3--KRX3-Antenna-Flexibility-tp1499595p1499595.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] [K3] - KRX3 filter choice
Just had a Katiegram for my KRX3 which was ordered on February 1st:-) At the moment my K3 has additional 500Hz (5 pole) and 250Hz (8 pole) filters but I've ordered an 8 pole 400Hz to go with the KXR3; thought I may move the 500Hz 5 pole to the KXR3 and have both 8 pole filters in the main receiver. Wondering now if I should instead go for another 500Hz 5 pole roofing filter for the KXR3 and have it matched to the original? Would this make sense should I want to use diversity rx (apologies - haven't really studied this...)? The email says they can supply a matched unit for an extra $30 so the cost would be the same. Any comments before I confirm the order?? 73, Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 #145) PS. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3: AF Gain
Bill, It turned out to be a simple configuration problem as I had suspected. The KRX3 had lost the antenna setting when I disabled and reenabled it to fix the AF gain problem, so I only had to use BSET and tap [ANT] to choose the same ANT again as VFO A. Now all is well! I have the main receiver's AF Gain set to HI, but I can't find a way to enable that function on the KRX3. Am I missing something, or is this a feature request? With the main receiver on HI, the difference between the two receivers is too great to be able to hear very well on the KRX3, at least for the hard of hearing. 73, Mitch DJØQN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I searched the archives and didn't see this one. Is the notch filter on the to-do list for the second receiver? I assume it'll follow when the separate NR and NB are implemented. Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3
Well, taking apart a perfectly working radio is bound to be barrier to doing this. Had my concerns too. Put it in today. Seems to work AOK. One step in the manual that saved my butt was "check for connectors that may have pulled out during the subrx assembly install." Indeed one did. Routing the tiny coax cables to install it was somewhat of a pain. The experiences of others reported here helped to smooth out rough spots. 73 de Brian/K3KO After reading all of the stories of problems with the KRX3, I've decided not to install the one I received a couple of months ago. I originally planned to wait and see how other installations played out especially after reading that the front panel had to be removed and messed with in order to do the KRX3 installation. That's the last thing I wanted to do. I took extreme care with the front panel during the initial kit assembly a -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3---KRX3-tp1357697p1364539.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The DSP behind your ears needs a firmware upgrade Bill! :) I also have the 2.7k and 500 in both RXs for diversity, but additionally have the 1.8k and 200 in my Main for serious contesting. I've found that even using the 200 in Main and 500 in Sub does not cause serious problems in diversity, even though the filters have different offsets...but this might not be the case for everyone. I have a similar setup with the difference that my narrow SSB filter is 2.1kc. I don't notice any serious problems except that my SUB RX mutes when having different filers selected and narrowing down the passband excessively. To be pure I guess I have to turn off any filter not available in the sub RX when doing diversity RX. On the other hand, it should be possible to have the firmware pich only the filters available in the in both RX. 73 de Björn, SM0MDG SE0X ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3
The filters don't need to be matched in bandwidth but they do need to have the same frequency offset to avoid possible "beat note" problems between the two (main/sub) synthesizers. I didn't bother to pay the extra 60 bucks to frequency-match the 2.7 kHz in the KRX3 with the old one in the main receiver. The new one came in 100 Hz different than the old one, so I just split the difference and entered the same offset for both. A 50 Hz error is not significant in a 2.7 kHz filter. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3
I can just confirm that after 4 hours job on kitchen table without any complication I have new KRX3 module inside, calibrated and with all filters I ordered for it. Also DSP f/w loaded, simply finished. There was no horror scenario, board fitted inside correctly, no need to modify R91 etc Also having version without nylon standoff for main DSP but suppose it is used as mechanical support only to avoid touching boards or some long leads problems which is not my case. There are basically three main "actions" as KSYN and SUB I/O boards and AUX ant cable install, then Front panel DSP addition and KRX module itself - you can plan and study all from manuals just before and ask for anything unclear, really there is no trap or hidden beast inside :-) Dissasembly/assembly of DSP BD and Front panel was not done first time here so maybe I am little bit more experienced but really no problem. The more iportant challenge was to fasten AUX ANT Bnc and organize coax cables around PLL... Now connecting antenna and will test split on VK9WDX on 30m :-) GL to all K3 builders, thanks to Elecraft and 73! Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KRX3
Hi, Dave, Wow -- I know exactly what you are talking about! I received my KRX3 and there it sat in a box for two weeks. I was more than a little scared to install it after reading about some of the horror stories on the reflector. Two weekends ago I took the plunge. I set aside an entire Sunday, cleared the work bench, and dived it. I have to say, quite honestly, that it was much, much easier than I could have imagined. I think being a little scared might have helped, as I was VERY careful and took my time. However, it all went together ridiculously easy and I had no problems whatsoever. The front panel was much easier to get off and reinstall than it was the first time I put the K3 together. In the entire process, the only problem I had was a bent screw. The decision is yours, but I wouldn't hesitate to do the install again. Good luck and 73 . . . I've never heard an "SE0" before and my brain/ears were trying to make sense of it as I was madly switching antennas to try to peak the signal. I first thought it was an "NE0" so I was switching my antennas West. Unique prefixes are not always an advantage if the operator on the other end does not recognize them!
