[FairfieldLife] B12, once again
(Jaan Suurküla [= big (suur) village (küla; cf. Sanskrit kula)] is an M.D. of apparently Estonian ancestry.) Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2006 14:51:32 +0200 (CEST) From: Jaan Suurkula [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: You may have vitamin B12-deficiency Introduction Dear Friends, B12 is very important for the normal functioning of the brain. For example, over half of people with Alzheimers dementia have been found to have B12 deficiency. Research has reported B12-deficiency among one third of vegetarians studied. This may be an underestimation as the tests are insensitive. The reason for the deficiency is that vegetarian food is poor in B12, unless one regularly eats mungbean and chickbean sprouts (a cup virtually every day is required to provide enough). So it is good to take some B12 if one has been a vegetarian for a long time. Even when there is a harmful deficiency in the Brain, it is not always very evident. Although the tests are unreliable, they should still be taken because, if positive you have a strong reason to be careful about taking B12 in the future. Wrong cooking may cause deficiency. This is, because all the B- vitamins are very heatsensitive so they are commonly destroyed with cooking. They are very watersoluble so they should not be boiled in water. B-vitamin rich vegetables should be steamed (not boiled in water), until they get a little soft. So unless this is done, there are not much B-vitamins left in the food. Then take B-vitamins - Brewers yeast is a good supplement. I have found pronounced deficiency in several vegetarian TM-people NOTE: Do forward this to your vegetarian friends especially as well as elderly relatives. Please mention that I intend, if time and resources allow, to create a website also informing about other important health issues. The idea is to sort out, among all the more or less well underpinned rumours in the health field, what are really important and common health issues in our modern society and to explain in a way laymen can understand. I will let you know when/if it is published. Jai Guru Dev Jaan As this text is quite long I have split it in a few parts. B12 part 1 Symptoms Silent vitamin B12 deficiency common among vegetarians By Jaan Suurküla, M.D. Recent research has shown that vitamin B12 deficiency is very common among vegetarians. In addition, at least 10-15 % of all people above 60 are deficient. Measuring the vitamin in blood is not reliable. Some can have a pronounced deficiency with normal B12 in blood. Therefore the extent of B12 deficiency has long been underestimated. Even young people may be deficient. The youngest vegetarian with a clearcut deficiency I know about was 17 years. I have found that many vegetarian meditators have B12 deficiency. Deficiency symptoms may be vague Vitamin B12 is very important for the normal functioning of the nervous system. Early and even fairly pronounced deficiency does not always cause distinct or specific symptoms. Common early symptoms are tiredness or a decreased mental work capacity. Decreased concentration and decreased memory (brain Vata). Irritability and depression. Sleep disturbances may occur, because B12 is important for the regulation of the sleep wake cycle by the pineal gland (through melatonin)[1]. Treatment with B12 normalizes the melatonin level, and thereby the sleep disturbance. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with severe seasonal depressions has a known connection with disturbed pineal (melatonin) functioning including disturbed sleep-wake rhythm[2]. But I have had cases with pronounced deficiency but still no subjective symptoms perhaps some sleep disturbance. It is my experience that many doctors miss the diagnosis. Severe deficiency may harm the brain. For example about 50 percent of Alzheimer's dementia cases had low B12 in a recent Swedish study. The damage is suspected to be caused by an increase of the neurotoxic amino acid homocystein which requires B12 for its breakdown. Also the peripheral nervous system is affected. The first symptoms are tingling, needle-prick or burning sensations in the toes and later in the fingertips. Later numbness in the hands and feet like walking on clouds and balance disturbances. The muscles get weak and shaky. The bladder and bowel control gets increasingly impaired. Impotence may occur. The sense of smell may decrease. Many other disturbances, not yet known to be connected to B12 may be there. But you can have pronounced brain deficiency without any of these peripheral symptoms. Vitamin B12-deficiency may also cause anemia and this was formerly thought to be a good indicator of B12-deficiency. But recent research has found that there may be pronounced brain affection without anemia. Especially in pernicious anemia (see below) there may also be symptoms from the Gastro-intestinal channel, including soreness of the tongue that may be smooth, at least on the sides, flatulence, heartburn, diarrhea

[FairfieldLife] Quite a surprise!
Whitney: The [Sanskrit] 'r' is clearly shown by its influence in the euphonic processes of the language to be a lingual sound, or one made with the tip of the tongue turned up into the dome of the palate. It thus resembles the English smooth 'r', and, like this, seems to have been *untrilled*. [emph. add.] a. The Paninean scheme reckons 'r' as a lingual. None of the praatishaakyas, however, does so; nor are they entirely consistent with one another in its description. For the most part they define it as made at the roots of the teeth. This would give it a position like that of the vibrated 'r'; but no authority hints at a vibration as belonging to it. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- See what's inside the new Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] maadhava-vidyaaraNya?
6 1.3 Authorship of the J vanmuktiviveka Despite all that has been written about the sage Vidy raýya,we have little reliable data on his identity.I want to consider first the clues available in his own writings. In the beginning of the JMV itself, the author outlines the plan of his book, naming the four types of renouncers, and says Now,the practices of these (renouncers)have been described by us in the commentary on the P r arasmÁti .Here the paramaha ¸sa is described.[1.0.11 ] These words by themselves are the single best evidence we have that Vidy raýya the author of the JMV is the same as M dhava the author of the P M.We find in the introductory verses 6 7 of the P M that the author was the son of M yaýa and ¯r mat ,brother of S yaýa and Bhogan tha.He was the disciple of the ¯aÔkar c ryas Vidy t rtha and Bh rat t rtha. These verses also mentions ¯r kaýÒhan tha,who may have been his family's preceptor. He studied the black Yajurveda and the Baudh yana dharmasÂtra and belonged to the Bh radv ja-gotra.9 His date of birth is unknown;however, according to an inscription preserved at the ¯ÁÔgeri maÒha ,we may be certain he died in 1386.10 more: http://robgoodd.net/r_goodding.pdf p. 26 - Yahoo! Gladly! Unfortunately cut and pasting from Gooddings version will not work as a good transliteration as it is encoded in a CSX font. So it usually won't look good in ASCII or HTML. I was too lazy to try to fix that. I guess I hafta emphasize that I don't agree with VidyaaraNya as to the dangerousness of siddhis. IMO, both Vyaasa and Bhojadeva in their commentaries on YS seem to point out that te samaadhaav upasargaaH... in III 38 (or something) refers only to the siddhis mentioned in the previous suutra. But perhaps if I was a rabid anti-TMer, I'd try to read it in a different way... :) The nice thing about Gooddings version is he is the first westerner to actually go to India to investigate the various versions of the text, identify their differences and rectify the mistakes based on his findings in discussion with pundits there. [FairfieldLife] VidyaaraNya departs
Although VidyaaraNya is careful to incorporate the basic positions of his teachers,he departs from the mainstream Advaita of Shankara by prescribing in addition to knowledge a further program of yogic discipline based on such texts as the Bhagavad Giitaa (BhG),the Paatañjaliiya Yogasuutras (YS),the GauDapaadiiya Kaarikaas (GK),and the Laghu-YogavaasiSTha (LYV).He integrates the structures of thought from the Shankaran Advaita and the Paatañjaliiya Yoga systems into one system bearing on the life and goal of the renouncer. -- Robert Goodding, The Jiivanmuktiviveka of VidyaaraNya To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' Actually, technically, the claim is that Pure Consciousness has three qualities though these aren't experienceable per se: Sat-chit-ananda... FWIW, 'sat' is an interesting word. I think it's the neuter singular nominative form of the present participle of the verb 'as' (to be). Thus, the closest English equivalent would, I guess, be 'being'. One might expect it to be 'asat', but several other forms of that verb drop the initial 'a', for instance, 'asmi'([I] am), but 'santi' ([they] are). Thus, 'asat', of course, is the opposite of 'sat', prolly to be translated literally to 'non-being', or stuff. Do the Yoga Sutras actually call it flying? Well, the flying suutra goes like this: kaayaakaashayoH saMbandha-saMyamaal laghu-tuula-samaapattesh caakaasha-gamanam (ca + aakaasha-gamanam). Now, the form (without sandhi) samaapatteH is ablative/genitive singular of samaapatti. As a noun, according to CDSL, it doesn't have the meaning 'flying', but it seems rather safe to assume that its root, sorta, is the verb samaapat. Here are the meanings for the noun and the verb: samApatti f. coming together , meeting , encountering Ka1lid. ; accident , chance (see comp.) ; falling into any state or condition , getting , becoming (comp.) Yogas. ; assuming an original form , APra1t. ; completion , conclusion [...] samApat P. %{-patati} , to fly together towards , rush violently upon , attack , assail (acc.) MBh. R. c. ; to descend , alight VarBr2S. ; to come together , be united sexually with (%{saha}) MBh. ; to come to , attain ib. Thus, Patañjali might have hmmm...embedded(?) flying together in that suutra...or, then again, praps not... Nyt tämä poika lähti *askalle! :) Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Does my memory play tricks with me once again?
I seem to recall being mentioned during my siddhis course that one purpose of Sun, Moon and Polar Star (suurya, candra, dhruva) is to be of help in navigation during Flying. Be it as it may, both Vyaasa and Bhojadeva mention rays in their comments on YF-suutra. The relevant passage in YS-bhaashya goes like this, I believe: tatas tuurNanaabhitantumaatre vihRtya rashmiSu viharati (tataH; tu; uurNa-naabhi-tantu-maatre...) My attempt at translation: But then (after having been able to walk on water) having walked on a mere warp(?) of a spider's web he moves on in (on?) rays (rashmi_Su: locative plural of rashmi). Bhojadeva: [...] aadityarashmibhishca viharanyatheSTam aakaashena gacchati. (aaditya-rashmibhiH; ca; viharan; yathaa; iSTam...) ... moving (viharan) with the rays of sun ([aaditya]-rashmi_bhiH: instrumental plural of rashmi ) he goes (gacchati) by(?) aakaasha (aakaashena: instrumental singular of aakaasha) as (yathaa) he wishes (iSTam). My initiator told us, as I recall it, that TM won't affect ones basic character in any way. That was a bit of an disappointment for me, but despite that I've been doing basic TM quite regularly since 1976. Now, when I do flying, strange things start often happen almost immediately, that are annoying for someone suffering from social phobias, like people tending to come closer to me than without flying. That makes me feel rather uneasy. Furthermore, I tend have annoying heart arrhythmias during the day if I do flying for more than a couple of minutes. Perhaps it lowers my slightly high BP, and my heart reacts like that to a pressure remarkably lower than to what it's used to. [FairfieldLife] Nokia's atmosphere?
I sometimes bike to Nokia (the cell phones, y'know?!)which is a small town of about 3 inhabitants, some 10 miles away from where I live. It's really weird how the atmosphere changes almost right away after one crosses the border between Nokia and my home town, Tampere. Although I don't like everything in Nokia's general feeling, Nokia's suburban areas seem much more energetic and lively than the corresponding areas in Tampere. Perhaps that's somehow related to ME, although, AFAIK, there are lots more TMers in Tampere than in Nokia. But I have no idea how many of those who started TM here in the 70's still do it regularly. Perhaps just a very small percentage. To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' Yahoo! [FairfieldLife] Shankara on Giitaa XIII 13
GYeyaM yattatpravakShyaami yajGYaatvaamR^itamashnute . anaadi matparaM brahma na sattannaasaduchyate .. 13\-13.. Note that the transliteration above is apparently by a Hare Krishna. The Devanaagarii even in Swami Prabhupaada's As It Is has it anaadimatparaM brahma, and the Roman as anaadimat paraM brahma, although technically there would be no need to write anaadi and mat together if one is for the Vaishnava(?) interpretation of those words that Shankara below objects to. On the other hand, accoding to the rules of DN, mat and param are to be written together, which actually makes the Hare Krishna interpretation feasible. (There might be something missing below, because the pd-file was for me rather difficult to cut and paste.) Shankara's commentary on Giitaa XIII 13, translated by Swami Gambhirananda 13.13 Pravaksyami, I shall speak of, fully describe just as it is; tat, that; yat, which; is jenyam, to be known. In order to interest the hearer through inducement, the Lord speaks of what its result is: Jnatva, by realizing; yat, which Knowable; asnute, one attains; amrtam, Immortality, i.e.; he does not die again. Anadimat, without beginning-one having a beginning (adi) is adimat; one not having a beginning is anadimat. What is that? The param, supreme, unsurpassable; brahma, Brahman, which is under discussion as the Knowable. Here, some split up the phrase anadimatparam as anadi and matparam because, if the word anadimat is taken as a Bahuvrihi compound, ['That which has no (a), beginning (adi) is anadi.' Matup is used to denote possession. Since the idea of possession is a already implied in anadi, therefore matup, if added after it, becomes redundant.] then the suffix mat (matup) becomes redundant, which is undesirable. And they show a distintive meaning: (Brahman is anadi, beginningless, and is) matparam, that of which I am the supreme (para) power called Vasudeva. Trully, the redundance could be avoided in this way if that meanig were possible. But that meaning is not possible, because what is intended is to make Brahman known only through a negation of all attributes by saying, 'It is called neither being nor non-being.' It is contradictory to show a possession of a distinctive power and to negate attributes. Therefore, although matup and a bahuvrihi compound convey the same meaning of 'possession', its (matup's) use is for completing the verse. [The Commentator accepts anadimat as a nan-tatpurusa compund. If, however, the Bahuvrihi is insisted on, then the mat after anadi should be taken as completing the number of syllables needed for versification. So, nat need not be compounded with param.] Having aroused an interest through inducement by saying, 'The Knowable which has Immortality as its result is beeing spoken of by Me,' the Lord says: Tat, that Knowable; ucyate, is called; na sat, neither being; nor is it called asat, non-being. Objection: After strongly girding up the loins and declaring with a loud voice, 'I shall speak of the Knowable,' is it not incongruous to say, 'That is called neither being nor non-being'? Reply: No. What has been said is surely consistent. Objection: How? Reply: For in all the Upanisads, the Knowable, i.e. Brahman, has been indicated only by negation of all attributes-'Not this, not this' (Br. 4.4.22), 'Not gross, not subtle' (op. cit. 3.3.8), etc.; but not as 'That is this', for It is beyond speech. Objection: Is it not that a thing which cannot be expressed by the word 'being' does not exist? Like-wise, if the Knowable cannot be expressed by the word 'being', It does not exist. And it is contradictory to say, 'It is the Knowable', and 'It cannot be expressed by the word being.' Counter- objection: As to that, no that It does not exist, because It is not the object of the idea, 'It is non-being.' Objection: Do not all cognitions verily involve the idea of being or non-being? This being so, the Knowable should either be an object of a cognition involving the idea of existence, or it should be an object of a cognition involving the idea of non-existence. Reply: No, because, by virtue of Its being super- sensuous, It is not an object of cognition involving either, of the two ideas. Indeed, any object perceivable by the senses, such as pot etc., can be either an object of cognition involving the idea of existence, or it can be an object of cognition involving the idea of non-existence. But this Knowable, being supersensuous and known from the scriptures, which are the sole means of (Its) knowledge, is not, like pot etc., an object of cognition involving either of the two ideas. Therefore It is called neither being nor non-being. As for your objection that it is contradictory to say, 'It is the Knowable, but it is neither called being nor non- being,'-it is not contradictory; for the Upanisad says, 'That (Brahman) is surely different from the known and, again, It is above the unknown' (Ke. 1.4). Objection: May it not be that even the Upanisad

In this derivative sense traigunya means the worldly life.] i.e. the worldly life, as the object to be revealed. But you bhava, become; nistraigunyah, free from the three qualities, i.e. be free from desires. [There is a seeming conflict between the advices to be free from the three qualities and to be ever-poised in the quality of sattva. Hence, the Commentator takes the phrase nistraigunya to mean niskama, free from desires.] (Be) nirdvandvah, free from the pairs of duality -- by the word dvandva, duality, are meant the conflicting pairs [Of heat and cold, etc.] which are the causes of happiness and sorrow; you become free from them. [From heat, cold, etc. That is, forbear them.] You become nitya-sattvasthah, ever-poised in the quality of sattva; (and) so also niryoga-ksemah, without (desire for) acquisition and protection. Yoga means acquisition of what one has not, and ksema means the protection of what one has. For one who as 'acquisition and protection' foremost in his mind, it is difficult to seek Liberation. [And not from the point of view of seeking Liberation.] A vishiSTaadvaita view of the same (Shrii Raamaanuja): 2.45 The word Traigunya means the three Gunas --- Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Here the term Traigunya denotes persons in whom Sattva, Rajas and Tamas are in abundance. The Vedas in prescribing desire-oriented rituals (Kamya-karmas) have such persons in view. Because of their great love, the Vedas teach what is good to those in whom Tamas, Rajas and Sattva preponderate. If the Vedas had not explained to these persons the means for the attainment of heaven etc., according to the Gunas, then those persons who are not interested in liberation owing to absence of Sattva and preponderance of Rajas and Tamas in them, would get completely lost amidst what should not be resorted to, without knowing the means for attaining the results they desire. Hence the Vedas are concerned with the Gunas. Be you free from the three Gunas. Try to acquire Sattva in abundance; increase that alone. The purport is: do not nurse the preponderance of the three Gunas in their state of inter-mixture; do not cultivate such preponderance. Be free from the pairs of opposites; be free from all the characteristics of worldly life. Abide in pure Sattva; be established in Sattva, in its state of purity without the admixture of the other two Gunas. If it is questioned how that is possible, the reply is as follows. Never care to acquire things nor protect what has been acquired. While abandoning the acquisition of what is not required for self-realisation, abandon also the conservation of such things already acquired. You can thus be established in self- control and thereby become an aspirant after the essentail nature of the self. 'Yoga' is acquisition of what has not been acquired; 'Ksema' is preservation of things already acquired. Abandoning these is a must for an aspirant after the essential nature of the self. If you conduct yourself in this way, the preponderance of Rajas and Tamas will be annihilated, and pure Sattva will develop. Besides, all that is taught in the Vedas is not fit to be utilised by all. (2.09) O King, Lord Krishna, as if smiling, spoke these words to the despondent Arjuna in the midst of the two armies.
