Bleeding Headers/Footers

2006-03-02 Thread Cutler, Sonia S T
First of all, many thanks indeed to Art and Fred for their advice on runaround
text.

I am afraid that I have another question, though, which regards bleeding
headers and footers.

Could anyone kindly tell me how you can get a coloured header (by coloured I am
referring to background colour) to bleed into the top of the page (effectively
extending the colour beyond the header text frame)?

Many thanks

Sonia

template mapping/perl scripting questions

2006-03-02 Thread Elisa Sawyer
Hi Framers!

Who knows of tools for mapping Frame paragraph styles/templates? I
found documentation about TemaplateMapper but it looks like it's no
longer available. what about Silicon Prairie Software's Paragraph
tool?

I'm also thinking about automating some other procedures that are
necessary for a conversion project so I need some basic information
about perl scripting--I'll need to convert hundreds of files to mif
and work with them. What's a good resource for information on perl
scripts, especially for working with mif files. I have found a few
libraries that look like they will help but need to backpedal so I can
set up the correct environment on a Linux machine.

Thanks, Scott. In this case it's bizarre because:

a. I've never seen this in fifteen years' of using FrameMaker

b. It won't let me do the *$%*& edit ;-)

I guess I'll have to kill the in-line nonsense: it's no longer needed anyway.

Extremely bizarre error in FrameMaker 6

2006-03-02 Thread Steve Rickaby
Unstructured, Mac.

While editing a figure caption that consists of an in-line paragraph with the
number, and a follow-on paragraph with the caption (for historical reasons), I
got an error log with the following message when I try to type or edit the
caption. Does anyone have a clue what it might mean or imply?

'Layout/Pack loop exceeded 100 iterations'

and the edit is refused.

The only change here is that I've recently gone from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to OS X
10.4.5. I sincerely hope that that's not relevant: booting back into 10.3.9
shows the same behavior.

Duplicate IDs when Saving as XML

I do indeed use the 'save as' xml feature, my documents are not structured.

Rick suggested:

Thanks for the suggestion Rick. Unfortunately I'm getting invalid xml
generated by Mif2Go.

Viewed in Internet Explorer it says "Reference to undefined entity 'nbsp'."
I guess I shall have to email their technical support and see if they can
help. I don't know why there's a non-breaking space there as there isn't in
the Frame document. It's just a blank line in a table, that the Frame XML
treats as follows:

That's what happens when we can't find the .bmp to incorporate
in the .wmf we create. But if you put them in the output dir,
and they have the same names as the original .gifs (but a .bmp
extension), we should see them and bring them in. We'd need to
see a test case (per User's Gude Appendix D) to figure out why
this is happening. For example, if you are clearing the output
dir at the start of conversion, the graphics might be removed
before they can be used. In that case, put the .bmps in the
same dir as the original .gifs, and we'll find them there.

Another alternative is to check "Write for anchored frames" in
the Export dialog, in which case we'll write a single WMF for
each frame using Frame's graphic export filters. However, the
print quality of the image will not be as good by this method.

I'm not sure that we should continue copying the list on all
this, as it's getting real specific to your setup.

with the fact that it really won't fit the structure we need to move
over legacy docs the way we want to.

It probably depends on how much time you have to dedicate to
setting up whatever systems you need -- like something for source
control! and some way to publish it to whatever destinations you need...
as well as your specific requirements for things like customized
documentation (it's a lot harder to generate it on the fly, than to just
be able to generate three different canned versions you can post on a
website or send to specific customers).

But then, I think XML is pretty awesome stuff, and while I do
not recommend it for everyone, it would be a whole lot easier to
implement it when you don't have 20 other people to come to consensus
with about what the structure should look like

Framers:

There's still time to register...I'll be speaking at the Toronto STC
Conference - "Preparing for the Content Management Tipping Point" and
wanted to encourage other list members in the area to attend. This
event is a knock out event and features great presenters and excellent
workshop topics. See press release below for details.

TheContentWrangler.com - Look there first!

Toronto ON - Your role as a technical communicator is destined to
change. Are you ready? From March 27-29, the Toronto chapter of the
Society for Technical Communication (STC) is presenting a three-day
hands-on workshop series on Preparing for the Content Management
Tipping Point. Several of the best-known industry experts and
luminaries will lead us through half-day sessions on information
design, architecture, and technologies needed for managing technical
content.

DAY ONE
The first day helps us to consider our written information and how it
is prepared for content management. Saul Carliner, of Concordia
University, kicks off the series with an exploration of information
design. Saul is an STC Fellow, author, and respected researcher in the
field of technical communication. His workshop looks at how content and
design affect the delivery and consumption of information. Jim Purdy,
of Communicare in Toronto, looks into the well-established best
practices of Information MappingR. Jim is Vice President Training at
Communicare and a Master Trainer in the Information Mapping
methodology. This workshop takes us through the process for structuring
content for usability using Information Mapping.

DAY TWO
The second day of workshops focuses more on the technologies used to
manage content. Michael Priestley, of IBM, sets aside the morning to
walk us through the intricacies of DITA (Darwin Information Typing
Architecture), an approved standard for managing XML content. Michael
is a lead DITA Architect at IBM and one of the standard's original
authors. Scott Abel, the Content Wrangler, dedicates the afternoon to
examining many of the peripheral technologies that will impact the way
content is collected, managed, and distributed. Scott is a founding
member and Vice President of Content Management Professionals (CM Pros)
and a sought-after speaker on many advanced technical communication
subjects.

DAY THREE
On the final day of the series, we look at how content management is
implemented. Ann Rockley, of the Rockley Group, helps us develop a
content management reuse strategy. Ann is an STC Fellow and a true
pioneer in the field of online communication and single-source
publishing. Her book, Managing Enterprise Content: A Unified Content
Strategy, is the definitive source for planning and implementing
content management solutions.

CM PROS SPONSORED EVENT
The afternoon program is hosted by CM Pros (Content Management
Professionals) and features: Content Management - Doing it right. A
variety of speakers will cover such topics as building a business case,
DITA-based content management tools, getting started with content
management and more. CM Pros is a non-profit organization established
in 2003. The event is open to all members of the community but is
limited to no more than 40 participants.

REGISTRATION AND FEES
Advanced registration closes March 10. Members of either the STC or CM

Re: Converting many directories using Mif2Go

2006-03-02 Thread John Posada
Jeremy...something odd.

I'm using the setting
[GraphFiles]
gif=bmp

I'm preconverting all the gifs to bmp and placing them in the target
directory. For the most part, everything converts fine

except

any images where I've added callouts in FM, when I convert, I get a
frame and I get the callouts, but the image behind the callouts is
not incorporated. I get callouts floating in an empty frame.

Is this a setting I should be making?

DITA possible for start-up/lone writer?

2006-03-02 Thread Joe Malin
Hi!

I am looking for experiences and advice about using DITA from tech
writers who are familiar with real success stories.

I'm the only tech writer here at TuVox, a 70-person startup. I am
seriously considering using DITA as the basis of a single-source
structured documentation environment. The reasons I want single-source
and structure are

*   re-use, to avoid duplication
* multi-channel delivery: ability to re-structure help systems
into documents
* localization/customization: ability to tailor documentation to
individual customers
* quick, iterative delivery: respond quickly to emerging needs

>From what I know of DITA, I think it matches these requirements pretty
well.

I know XML and I've used it with structured FM since FM6+SGML. I'm also
familiar with the conversion issues. I'm technically savvy (I'm a former
software engineer). However, I don't know everything there is to know
about DITA or XSLTs.

Does it make sense for a lone writer in a startup to use DITA? Will I
need lots of high-priced consultant help? Am I walking into a morass? I
have to tell you that I think DITA would help us, but I'm *really*
unfamiliar with trying to pioneer such an idea in a small company that
wants to save money anywhere it can.

Extremely bizarre error in FrameMaker 6

2006-03-02 Thread Scott White
I have seen that many times. It always seems to happen when I exceed what
Frame thinks is acceptable line spacing, or something like that. I have yet
to find a way to get rid of that.
As soon as I see that happen, I immediately go back to my friend "edit
undo."

Copying Text Box Crashes Frame

2006-03-02 Thread Katy Wegner
FrameMaker 7.0 and now 7.2

When I draw a text box using the tools palette and try to copy it
(select the box and click Ctrl C), I get the dreaded
Internal Error: 7204, #, ##

and FrameMaker shuts down.

I was hoping this might get fixed. Does anyone know anything about
this? ( just looked through Adobe Forums and FAQs and didn't see it).

Thanks,

TOC Formatting Problem

2006-03-02 Thread Grant Hogarth
David --
I'd set up ONE book as a "Master Template" with all the settings as
you want them for Paras, Chars, Colors, Variables, etc. Set up the
Master Pages and the assorted generated documents (TOC, IX, LOM, etc.)
as you want them as well. Save it in a special directory and make it
"read only". Now you can apply the formats to your manuals. There is a
really useful pair of free plugins from CUDSpan -- one that that allows
you to search for overrides and kill them as needed, another that lets
you clean out unused para/char tags. EZTools also has some really
useful free plugins as well. If you are willing to pay, then SYSTEC
GmbH's Toolbox [www.systec-gmbh.com/toolbox] is the way to go.

Once you've standardized your docs, it should be easier to keep them
that way.

Hi Daniel, Stuart and Richard,

Thanks for the encouragement and guidance. That is a sizeable
explainationDaniel Thanks once again.

The problem I'm facing deals with using the existing template that we
have in our company.
Over the past few "handovers" from one technical writer to the nexthas
resulted in tweaking of the template here and there. Which has basically
resulted in some of the styles being different in a book or an fm. And I
have a library of ten guides.

e.g. of errors specific to certain guides

Color * definition inconsistent; whereas the other fms of the same book
don't throw this error.
Show / Comment usage inconsistent; whereas all tags have been removed
and comments set to Show All.

Each guide having its various versions of templates. Mind you I am at a
loose end as far as the consistency in presentation is conserned. Some
fms have some styles which have "overrides". Frankly, I am unclear as to
how to changeover to a single template that all guides should use.
Secondly, how I can bring about a single template change.

Is it as easy / difficult as in "certain other software" ???
:)

I have tried to checkout Adobe Training Centers available in New Delhi,
India but found none.

I am glad that we can share knowledge via this group.

Thank you,

Save as RTF?

2006-03-02 Thread Robert Kern
Murray,

We have to maintain Word versions of all chapters on a book for
individual content owners to work with after each quarterly printing.

After we print the book, we impose a plain vanilla Frame template on the
files to eliminate all the design and problems that occur with lists and
such. We also run the art folder through a photoshop macro to reduce the
resolution to 72 dpi (resolves a lot of the size issue) and relink the
art to the new folder.

We still have to go through each chapter to check on extraneous returns
and anomalies, but it seems to be a good way to get 98% of the way to
clean RTF using only Frame's built in capabilities.

wanted to encourage other list members in the area to attend. This
event is a knock out event and features great presenters and excellent
workshop topics.

Pros enjoy significant discounts on registration. Visit
http://www.stctoronto.org/conference.htm to register online or call us
at +1 (416) 941-8383 x 13826. VISA, check or money order, and PayPal
accepted. Money raised by the conference will be used to support the
Toronto STC chapter.

many into one

2006-03-02 Thread Milan Davidovic
I'm having no luck with searching the frameusers.com
site, so perhaps I can put this to you...

Recently, I had the task of bringing the chapters of
one Frame book into a single chapter of another Frame
book. It wasn't a big task, so I did this:

1. Created the file that would serve as the chapter in
the target book.
2. Imported the chapters of the source book as text
insets.
3. Converted the insets into text.
4. Add the file to the target book.

Are there more efficient options for performing this
task?

Thanks...

Converting many directories using Mif2Go

2006-03-02 Thread John Posada
Thanks, Jeremy. Question...does the ini "snip" require any header
text or the bracketed heading of the section, or can I just include a
single line and that will get referenced. For example, for the

; for C:\Documents and Settings\John Posada\My
Documents\Documentation\RTM.book

and

can I just use gif=bmp or must I include the [GraphFiles] part also
do I need to include the header portion with the ;

Copying Text Box Crashes Frame

2006-03-02 Thread Katy Wegner
FrameMaker 7.0 and now 7.2

When I draw a text box using the tools palette and try to copy it
(select the box and click Ctrl C), I get the dreaded
Internal Error: 7204, #, ##

and FrameMaker shuts down.

I was hoping this might get fixed. Does anyone know anything about
this? ( just looked through Adobe Forums and FAQs and didn't see it).

Thanks,

"Styles" question (was TOC Formatting Problem)

If you really intended to ask the very broad question you asked, the
flip answer is RTFM.

The slightly longer version is: FM uses a variety of defined and named
"formats" ("styles" in certain other software), including paragraphs,
characters, tables, and cross-references. Describing how to create,
modify, use, and update them occupies big chunks of the user manual,
online help, and third-party books on FM. If you're not comfortable
learning from those sources, maybe you should seek out training.

If that isn't the question you intended to ask, maybe you could be more
specific.

RE: TOC Formatting Problem

Yes, we use that ourselves constantly. You can chain these

It's in the Automation chapter, in par. 27.2, "Importing settings
from configuration templates". Basically, you make an .ini
file that has the settings you want your config template, give
it a new name, and reference it in:

  [FDK]
; ConfigTemplate = path to configuration template file
  ConfigTemplate=D:/path/to/MyTemplate.ini

Any settings in your mif2htm.ini (or mif2rtf.ini) will override
the settings in your config template, so you will want to strip
your local .ini down to the minimum you need in it. Par. 27.2.1
gives the details on which settings to use where.

Thanks, Rick!

If you actually have duplicate IDs, meaning the same number as
the ObjectID of two paragraphs (in the MIF tag),
then no, Mif2Go will not correct this problem. But it is very
uncommon in unstructured Frame. (Structured is another story.)

Frame assigns a new ID whenever you copy/paste or create a new
para. However, if you cut/paste (within the same file), it
retains the previous ID, correctly so. So if you do run into
this unlikely problem, the fix is to select one of the paras
with the duplicate ID, copy (not cut) it, delete it, then paste
it back. It will get a new ID and all will be well.

However, that's not the problem in the original post, where
you had:
   ObjectID instead, which is safer...

It's a good idea to define at least the common entities in your

We add the   because some browsers will not render the
borders, margins, and padding of a completely empty cell

you can remove it with:

Saving as XML... is it futile?

2006-03-02 Thread Karen West
As mentioned in my other post; I produce documentation using FrameMaker
70p579 and we are now attempting to get all of our documentation online in a
help system, using a tool written in-house with our own software (a 4GL
called Cyberscreen), while maintaining the existing documentation for PDF
and print output. Initially my part in this was just to save the individual
chapters of each book as xml, producing a .xml and .css for each chapter,
plus make sure all the images were saved as gifs. As predicted by people on
this list, we keep hitting problems with the XML that Frame outputs. Last
month the problem was related to formatting that was applied using the
toolbar and not character and paragraph tags, this week it's the discovery
of duplicate IDs in the XML (see separate post).

4 months+ since the project started and I'm definitely past the point of
thinking we are doing the right thing. I'm currently devoting practically
all my time (as the sole technical writer in the company) to resolving the
formatting issues, and now there's the duplicate ID problem. Is it worth
trying to carry on using 70p579, or should I upgrade to 7.2? If I upgrade
will the extra XML features mean I can avoid using Structured Frame or is
there no way around it? I would rather bite the bullet now, than waste even
more time by plodding on hopelessly as I have been doing.

The latest problem is that there are duplicate IDs in the XML. A Google has
hinted that this is as a result of copying and pasting within chapters.

Here's an example of the problem from the guy who's developing the XML
parsing tool:

---

This is a link to a location labelled "Installation", i.e. the XML says

Install the client and server software - see

"
Software Installation

", page 78
.

Unfortunately there are SEVEN places in this document where the XML contains

and as "page 78" means nothing to my scripts they can't tell which of them
is intended.

Does anyone know a way of identifying these duplicate ids and more
importantly how to avoid creating them in the first place.

David,

Dan Emory gave you a good start. You might also read the template primer
on Adobe's site,
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/tempseries/pdfs/primer.pdf
which will give you a good grounding, too. You may also want to download
some of the template packs:

Thanks for the suggestion Rick. Unfortunately I'm getting invalid xml
generated by Mif2Go.

Viewed in Internet Explorer it says "Reference to undefined entity

I guess I shall have to email their technical support and see if they
can
help. I don't know why there's a non-breaking space there as there isn't
in
the Frame document. It's just a blank line in a table, that the Frame

Re: Extremely bizarre error in FrameMaker 6

2006-03-02 Thread Scott White
I have seen that many times. It always seems to happen when I exceed what
Frame thinks is acceptable line spacing, or something like that. I have yet
to find a way to get rid of that.
As soon as I see that happen, I immediately go back to my friend "edit
undo."

Duplicate IDs when Saving as XML

2006-03-02 Thread Joe Malin
It is absolutely a problem with cutting and pasting elements. You can
*not do this in FM*! (wish I could use bold).

Always create new elements, and always create new chapters from
templates and not by cloning old ones.

This was one of the first things I was warned about when using
structured FM at Oracle. Not that I'm saying Karen (or anyone else)
should have known; my guess is that Oracle found out the hard way!

I don't know a way to find the duplicate ids offhand. sorry!

As I have previously mentioned, I produce documentation using FrameMaker
70p579 and we are now attempting to get all of our documentation online
in a help system, using a tool written in-house with our own software (a
4GL called Cyberscreen), while maintaining the existing documentation
for PDF and print output. Initially my part in this was just to save the
individual chapters of each book as xml, producing a .xml and .css for
each chapter, plus make sure all the images were saved as gifs. As
predicted by people on this list, we keep hitting problems with the XML;
last month the problem was related to formatting that was applied using
the toolbar and not character and paragraph tags, which I'm currently
resolving.

The latest problem is that there are duplicate IDs in the XML. A Google
has hinted that this is as a result of copying and pasting within
chapters.

Here's an example of the problem from the guy who's developing the XML
parsing tool:

---

This is a link to a location labelled "Installation", i.e. the XML says

Install the client and server software - see

"
Software Installation ", page
78 .

Unfortunately there are SEVEN places in this document where the XML
contains

and as "page 78" means nothing to my scripts they can't tell which of
them is intended.

many into one

2006-03-02 Thread Milan Davidovic
I'm having no luck with searching the frameusers.com
site, so perhaps I can put this to you...

Recently, I had the task of bringing the chapters of
one Frame book into a single chapter of another Frame
book. It wasn't a big task, so I did this:

1. Created the file that would serve as the chapter in
the target book.
2. Imported the chapters of the source book as text
insets.
3. Converted the insets into text.
4. Add the file to the target book.

Are there more efficient options for performing this
task?

Thanks...

If that isn't the question you intended to ask, maybe you could be more
specific.

Save as RTF?

2006-03-02 Thread Art Campbell
I think that you can assume they work for some people all of the time
or all people some of the time.
But the issue you're raising is actually quality of translation and
depth of features.
And MIF2Go supports many more nuances that can be exported more
correctly. A head-to-head comparison of your more complicated docs
should be a good demo.

And that's not even exploring MIF2Go's other export abilies.

Re: Save as RTF?

Converting many directories using Mif2Go

I'm trying to convert 15 books to Word using MIF2GO. A recent feature
added to M2G is the ability to place a path in the INI to variable

brings them in to the default ini.

I've been unable to find how to implement this in the help. Can
someone point me to the topics or give me the steps that implement

Duplicate IDs when Saving as XML

2006-03-02 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Are your source files already structured, or do you export to XML using the FM
"Save As" feature? If they are already structured then you may want to check
out the xref tools from West Street Consulting (the website is
http://www.weststreetconsulting.com) to help 'uniqu-ify' the ID values.

Hope that helps,

Bernard

Subject: Duplicate IDs when Saving as XML

As I have previously mentioned, I produce documentation using FrameMaker
70p579 and we are now attempting to get all of our documentation online in a
help system, using a tool written in-house with our own software (a 4GL called
Cyberscreen), while maintaining the existing documentation for PDF and print
output. Initially my part in this was just to save the individual chapters of
each book as xml, producing a .xml and .css for each chapter, plus make sure
all the images were saved as gifs. As predicted by people on this list, we keep
hitting problems with the XML; last month the problem was related to formatting
that was applied using the toolbar and not character and paragraph tags, which
I'm currently resolving.

The latest problem is that there are duplicate IDs in the XML. A Google has
hinted that this is as a result of copying and pasting within chapters.

Here's an example of the problem from the guy who's developing the XML parsing
tool:

---

This is a link to a location labelled "Installation", i.e. the XML says

Install the client and server software - see

"
Software Installation ", page 78
.

Unfortunately there are SEVEN places in this document where the XML contains

and as "page 78" means nothing to my scripts they can't tell which of them is
intended.

--

Does anyone know a way of identifying these duplicate ids and more importantly
how to avoid creating them in the first place.

TIA

David,

Dan Emory gave you a good start. You might also read the template primer
on Adobe's site,

http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/tempseries/pdfs/primer.pdf
which will give you a good grounding, too. You may also want to download
some of the template packs:

RE: Save as RTF?

2006-03-02 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Murray,

Your mileage may vary, but I can't get FM's Save As .rtf to work. I use
Mif2Go for that conversion regularly and am happy with the results. So are
my clients who ask for the .rtf output.

I am trying to convince my manager to buy mif2go.

Does Save as RTF, and Save as Microsoft Word Win 6.0/7.0, ever work, under
any circumstance?

If yes, what is the procedure?

If no (rhetorical question), why are they in the list of Save options?

Re: Save as RTF?

2006-03-02 Thread Art Campbell
I think that you can assume they work for some people all of the time
or all people some of the time.
But the issue you're raising is actually quality of translation and
depth of features.
And MIF2Go supports many more nuances that can be exported more
correctly. A head-to-head comparison of your more complicated docs
should be a good demo.

And that's not even exploring MIF2Go's other export abilies.

Saving as XML... is it futile?

2006-03-02 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Karen,

I would suggest trying Mif2Go (http://www.omsys.com) to generate your XML
from unstructured FrameMaker. It is easier to customize the output you get
and it should resolve the duplicate ID problem. If it works for you, it will
cost you around $300 US. Structured FrameMaker is fine, but then you have to
develop an EDD, read/write rules, etc. You will basically be re-engineering
your authoring environment to get better control over your output. This is
not necessarily a bad thing, but if you are happy with unstructured
FrameMaker, I would try Mif2Go so you can simply get good XML without
messing around with the FrameMaker portion of your workflow.
