RE: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-25 Thread Michael O'Neill
I wondered the same thing. From what it looks like to me, RoboHelp
supports Framemaker in that it imports .fm and .mif files. Since they
don't list Frame as a supported authoring environment, it doesn't look
like it is heavily integrated (/assumption).

Here's what I gleaned off the website:

Support for Adobe FrameMaker 8 (Enhanced)

Import multiple Adobe FrameMaker(r) files (MIF and FM) at one time with
tables of contents, indexes, and glossaries. Apply conditional build
tags or user-defined variables to content before importing or when it's
time to publish. Map FrameMaker styles to RoboHelp styles when importing
MIF files. Repurpose FrameMaker content for HTML publishing on import
and use Topic Alias Markers to identify context-sensitive help.
   http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/features/

Which authoring environment does RoboHelp 7 support other than the
built-in HTML editor?
RoboHelp 7 supports Adobe Dreamweaver(r) CS3; Macromedia(r)
Dreamweaver 8 from Adobe; Microsoft FrontPage 2003; HomeSite 5.5; and
Microsoft Word 2007, Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000.
http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/faq/

Does RoboHelp 7 integrate with FrameMaker?
You can import FrameMaker 8 MIF and FM files with style mapping,
conditional tags, user-defined variables, and Captivate content intact.
Additional RoboHelp 7 and FrameMaker integration can be experienced
through new Adobe Technical Communication Suite software, which includes
RoboHelp 7, FrameMaker 8, Captivate 3, and Adobe Acrobat(r) 3D Version 8
software.

So just how tightly are FM and RH integrated? I can't recall a
successful marriage of the two tools, historically. However, it's only
been a short time since the two were developed under the same roof, so
to speak.

I'd be interested in learning more about how these two tools work
together.

RE: Recording DVDs

2007-09-27 Thread Michael O'Neill
Yes. Once you import your VHS tapes as files, your DVD editing/burning
software should allow you to make your own DVD menu.

I used one of the programs that came with Nero Ultimate Edition to do
just this with my wedding footage. There are better programs out there,
but I was working with what I had on-hand.

RE: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-10-01 Thread Michael O'Neill
Vivek Jain @ Adobe discusses single-sourcing with RoboHelp and
FrameMaker on the Adobe Technical Communication blog:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/

At the same time, you manage the content from FrameMaker files in a set
of special folders, providing you the flexibility of continuously
updating the content as you edit the files in FrameMaker.

To make the workflow smoother, RoboHelp provides a visual indicator of
whether the content in RoboHelp is out of synchronization with
FrameMaker content or not.

This is looking interesting. Anyone know of a good listserv devoted to
discussing RoboHelp?

RE: Frame in Windows emulation

2007-10-03 Thread Michael O'Neill
I can confirm excellent results running a Windows VM in Ubuntu (6.X)
using the VMWare Server installed through Synaptic.

I can't say if Wine is better or worse than VMWare.
With a Virtual Machine, you have higher system overhead to run the guest
OS...but a much greater likelihood that everything will work as you are
used to and as expected. With Wine, you get to work in Linux, have
lower resource overhead, but some things may not work as expected/at
all.

I figured that *for me*, the approach with the least amount of risk was
to use a VM. (The fact that Virtual Machines are understood by my
colleagues was also a consideration. Linux is not (yet) a popular OS in
my office.)

RE: problems with eps graphics in framemaker

2007-11-16 Thread Michael O'Neill
I don't know why it is happening, but I can say we have the same
problem. For us, FrameMaker has always behaved this way, and I just
assumed that it was set in stone and couldn't be improved upon. For
that reason, we don't work off the server. I don't remember if I ever
researched it or not. I inherited the problem from the last TW and was
told about it as if it were a known fact about FrameMaker. I'd be
really interested to know if there is a fix for this as well.

FWIW: I'm using Frame 6.x and all our graphics are .eps.

Hello Framers. I'm having trouble bringing up EPS graphics imported by
reference in FrameMaker 7.2 and FrameMaker 8 documents. JPG, TIF, PNG,
and
other formats load quickly. However, a good sized EPS graphic imported
by
reference can take 5 minuets or more before it shows up. This only
happens
when working off the server. If I copy all files and work locally, EPS
graphics show up almost immediately.

The same EPS graphics load just fine in other applications (FreeHand 9,
MS
Word from Office 2003). The IT tech has done data transfer rate
benchmarks
and data is moving back and forth between the server and my laptop
normally;

The
EPS graphics load just fine on my old Pentium III workstation.

Any insight as to what's happening would be appreciated.

RE: Acrobat / FrameMaker conflicts during install

2007-12-13 Thread Michael O'Neill
Is it only the .exe files that are missing, or are all the dll's missing
to?

If it's only the .exe files, you might try creating your own empty text
files with the same file names as the missing .exe files. Maybe the
uninstaller just wants to remove a file with that name, and doesn't
actually have to open it or look inside the file.

If all the .dlls are gone too, then obviously your headache is much
bigger.

Just a suggestion while you wait for IT...

Subject: Acrobat / FrameMaker conflicts during install

My client company just went ahead and bit the bullet and forked out
around $800 or so for FrameMaker 8.0. (Does this mean that Frame 9.0
will be $900, Frame 10.0 will be $1,000, etc, etc?). We also bought
Acrobat Professional 8.0 as well.

I want to do a clean installation but before I do, I have some
concerns because of what is on the terminal that I inherited (with
Windows XP Office and the service packs, etc.).

It already has on it the folders (and their subfolders) - but NOT the
executable application files - for Acrobat 6.0 and 7.0.

Without the executable files, I can't do an uninstall via Control Panel.
So apparently, my only option is to simply do what you're NOT supposed
to do - just delete the Acrobat 6.0 and 7.0 folders. Ooh, but that
grates on me because I fear that bits and pieces of either or both
Acrobats are already strewn hither and thither throughout the Windows XP
operating system and will cause problems later on down the line. Or not.

(Remember the good old days, when a program was all in one folder, I
mean directory? Hah! We'll never see THAT stuff again.)

I already found out the hard way how nice and courteous (NOT!!) one
Acrobat program is to another after first installing FrameMaker 8.0
(along with its PDFMaker feature) and then NOT being able to install
Acrobat 8.0 afterwards. (I kept getting a message after the Acrobat 8.0
setup procedure was well into progress that Setup has detected that you
already have a more functional product installed. Setup will now
terminate.)

So I uninstalled FM8.0 and its plug-ins and the Acrobat 8.0 install
moved along much further than before (I had to cancel it, however, until
my IT guy gets in here with the serial number).

So with FM8.0 and Acrobat8.0 currently off the drive, what to do about
the previously installed Acrobat 6.0 and 7.0 folders in light of their
missing executable application files.

Just delete them and proceed with the Acrobat 8.0 and then FM 8.0
installations?

BTW, the Adobe docs really play up the purchased support plans (even for
defective products), leading me to believe that free telephone support
for initial setup is no more. But somewhere, I did find that there
apparently is 90-day free phone support for initial setup problems.

Am I correct on this?

RE: Question about TOC, LOF, LOT

2008-02-18 Thread Michael O'Neill
Yes LOF and LOT are both examples of front matter, but so is a ToC.

IMHO, the only things (standard elements) that should come before the
ToC are the Cover and the Legal page (if not at the end). Anything else
will likely just be contrary to user expectations.

With that said, there ARE exceptions to every rule, and this may be one
(though on the surface, it doesn't sound like it). Before acquiescing,
I'd ask for a better reason than the front matter one. Perhaps he can
show you some examples of documents (external to your organization) that
are organized his way?

Framers,

A client would like to be able to have a script that runs nightly that
will
do the following:

- Pull FM files and books from their version control system (PVCS)

- Maybe set conditions (not sure if this is needed yet)

- Update the books

- Create PDFs of books and some stand-alone files

- Put the resulting PDFs in a specific place for the nightly build

It seems like fmbatch can do this, but I think it only works with FM for
Unix (they have FM for Win).

Can any of the other FDK tools do this? (An in-house developer will
likely
write the script.)

What about FrameScript?

What tool is best?

Thanks for your help!

its command from the menu (or by typing the keyboard shortcut), then
type Alt+spacebar to activate the title bar menu, and type M for Move.

RE: Recovery

2008-03-14 Thread Michael O'Neill
Here's what I would do:

1) Back up a copy of both the original and the recovered versions to
someplace safe.
2) Open the recovered version in FrameMaker.
3) Open the original version in FrameMaker (might have to force it).
4) Compare the differences between the two versions using FrameMaker's
compare feature. (File- Utilities- Compare Documents) Select the
Summary and Composite Documents option when doing so.
5) See which version has the most up-to-date information. Save that
version over the original version.

Note: I just sort of developed this method by intuition. I'd be glad to
hear if anyone does something different/there are problems with my
method/easier ways to determine whether or not to go with a recovery
version of a .fm file.

Subject: Export a FM book to single Word file?

I'd like to export my Frame book (easily) to one giant Word file, and I
haven't figured out how to do it other than one file at a time, then put
them back together by hand in Word.

I have many outside reviewers who need to review and add comments
electronically, and like it or not, Word is the lingua franca of most of
the
world. My reviewers are fine that the pages look a little weird in the
Frame
RTF export.

I've been researching the commenting features in Acrobat 8, and I keep
coming across this statement: Commenting tools are only available in
PDFs
that have commenting enabled. OK. but it looks as if I can't enable
commenting rights from the PDFs that come out of FM8's File Save as
PDF
feature (unless I'm missing something). I don't really want to buy full
Acrobat just for this feature.

Sending an enormous zip file of little Word documents isn't very
efficient
for the reader on the other end.

There's no RTF option in File Save Book As.

Ideas?

RE: Export a FM book to single Word file?

2008-03-20 Thread Michael O'Neill
At the risk of confusing the issue, there seems to be a little bit of
conflicting information out there as to what exactly is required to
allow reviews with Adobe Reader. From
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrfaq.html:

Q. Can I mark up and review files in Adobe Reader?

A. Yes, if this functionality has been rights-enabled by the PDF author.
Adobe Acrobat or Adobe LiveCycle software lets PDF authors turn on
special commenting tools in Adobe Reader on a document-by-document
basis. This capability enables Adobe Reader 7.0 users to easily review
and mark up PDF files with a variety of commenting and markup tools. You
can add sticky notes; indicate text edits; and highlight, cross out, or
underline text. You can also add premade or dynamic stamps.

Q. Can I add comments to a PDF file with Adobe Reader?

A. PDF authors using Adobe LiveCycle(tm) enterprise server and design
software can activate special features in their documents that provide
additional functionality. These enabled Adobe PDF files allow people
with Adobe Reader to save the file to a local hard drive, fill out
forms, add comments and other markups, share it with others, and submit
a completed document electronically. In addition, Adobe PDF files can be
enabled to allow people to digitally sign, certify, and authenticate a
document.

The first answer does _not_ specify that Acrobat Professional is
required to turn on the special commenting tools when the PDF is opened
in Adobe Reader. The second answer is more specific, requiring Acrobat
Professional or Adobe LiveCycle. In either case, Acrobat Professional
will do the job...but depending on what you want your reviewers to do
with Adobe Reader, you _may_ be able to get by with a less expensive
version of Acrobat.

Thanks for input everyone. It seems that buying Acrobat Pro for the
comments
feature is the most stable and the cheapest answer, and my Word-loving
reviewers will have to live with it. If I give them the choice of
reviewing
one PDF file with comments vs. 32 separate Word files, they'll choose
the
PDF.

RE: Marketing a product: which language for the documentation

2008-05-21 Thread Michael O'Neill
Here's my 2 cents:

1) Are their rules, laws, or regulations governing this in each country it will
be sold in (note: type of product might have an impact here)

For example, in the USA there _may_ be FDA regulations about documentation
localization for medical devices...FCC regulations about broadcast equipment
documentation and telecommunications product documentation, etc...

2) The marketing decision for the product

I'm sure at one time or another, most of us English speakers have had the
experience of assembling furniture/children's toys/gadgets/etc... where the
instructions are not in English. This definitely contributes to the user
impression of the product with regards to quality. It also might have a
relationship to extra costs for support, returns, malfunctions, etc... for the
company selling the product. In many companies, Marketing depts. weigh these
variables and decide.

 Hi to all,

here is a question from a client: he's just developed a new GPS-based
product in France, has a getting started and user manual written (I'm
currently working on it) in French and would like to know if he is
 supposed to have them translated...

I answered yes, you have to have them translated into the languages of
countries where you want the product marketted. But I am not 100% sure of
 the answer.

The other question is: does the client have to have both manuals
 translated?

Do you have any idea of official (governmental) documents about this kind

If Jim Owens is right, and there are desirable help features that
can't
be implemented via FM, then these are shortcomings in the tools that
ought to be put on the enhancement request list. But, IMHO, make the

Every tool has it's shortcomings... One that was a deal-breaker for us
when evaluating TCS was the ability to convert step by step procedures
in FrameMaker to drop-down sections in RH. When we looked, the only way
to implement drop-down text in RH was to edit and maintain the content
in RH. Anyone know if this has changed?

Smart way to achieve goal in FM

2008-09-12 Thread Michael O'Neill
OK Folks,

Here's a basic question for the gurus/experts. I've been using FM for a
number of years now, but recently I'm trying to do something that I
haven't done before so I'm not sure of the best way to achieve my
objective.

Context:
The document I am authoring from scratch is an entry-level type document
that deals mostly with system concepts and strategies. It will link to
already extant procedures in the online help, installation guides,
etc...

The document will be delivered as both a stand-alone PDF, and as part of
a merged help set produced with WWP2003.

Goal:
One of the things my manager wants is a threaded/running
Example/Scenario section that will appear in various portions of the
book that will explain the concepts in terms of an actual example.

Basically, this means introducing the Example scenario in the beginning
of the guide and corresponding sections of text in various and
subsequent chapters.

I want this content to appear with a light gray background. How do I do
this?

Here's what I've thought of:

Inserting a one-cell table with a gray background wherever this type of
content appears. Problem (which may have its own solution): The one
cell table is essentially 1 row, and it doesn't appear that you can
break a row across a page.

Adding a text frame for this content (from the graphics toolbar). Seems
do-able, as I can control the dimensions and background color of the
text frame. Only problem is WWP tends to put text frames at the end of
the chapter and not at the location in which they appear in the FM
document.

Anyone have a good solution for this? Like I said, we've never wanted
to do this type of thing before, so I am likely missing something
obvious. I'm not averse to using the help or other references...but my
searches thus far have been hindered by not knowing a good keyword to
start with. Alternatively, am I missing something obvious? Is there a
paragraph style for background color that I've managed to miss
repeatedly?

I'd make a table format and set it up that way. Then you don't have
any manual operations other than adding an additional row cell to
break across pages.

RE: Server-based (hosted) documentation and user comments (DocBook?)

One additional note, MoinMoin wiki can be configured to allow users to
output content as/via/through (not sure of the right terminology)
DocBook. I haven't explored this yet to see whether that's HTML output
or PDF output (or both).

This is something I'd like to know more about, as to me it would be
pretty compelling for us to take care of the source-wiki workflow and
let users generate their own PDFs on demand from the wiki, if they so
desire.

Can anyone recommend technologies to do the following:

* Hosted documentation, available on the internet as a web
service.

* Each doc topic allows users to add comments. (e.g. Here's a
better example to do this task...)

* Management tools to moderate user comments, and to handle
documentation updates (retaining the comments).

* Authoring tools to produce said documentation.

The open source community exploits these technologies. How do they do
it? I have an inkling for a solution: FrameMakerDocBookePublisher?

I just watched someone here at the office run Parallels and switch between
OS X and Windows. It looked pretty slick, especially with the copy and

He said setup was pretty painless and unbelievably fast. He was running
Win2003 and OS X on a Powerbook Pro (dual core).

I only witnessed, and didn't have time to work with, anything myself...but
it seemed to be very fast in both operating systems. Of course, I wouldn't
want to run Photoshop in Windows and Final Cut in OS X at the same time...

Pretty slick and impressive nonetheless.

Boot Camp enables you to run Windows XP natively. The beta copy
already has the native drivers. There is no speed degradation. It is
not emulation.

Parallels seems to be virtulization, but not emulation. It is a true
beta and does not yet have all the drivers needed.

The caveat is that you need an Intel Mac to run these programs.

MSWord files.

We get PowerPoint slides to edit and clean up for delivery. In places,
artwork has been pasted into the slide, but contains white boxes that
cover bits of the drawing or text. This method doesn't work in grayscale
because the hidden lines or text show up again.

We need a tool that lets us remove text in the graphics where we do not
have the source file.

Are either of these the right tool for this? Which tool would you

emulation form in what was known as Classic. However, OS X 10.4 dropped

RE: OS 9 Applications on Tiger

2006-10-09 Thread Michael O'Neill
I'm running this on a Mac Mini with a G4 proc.

It's been a long time since I set it up, but as best as I can remember,
I installed the Classic environment as part of the initial setup and
configuration of Tiger. This required the use of a Classic
environment disk (again, if I remember correctly).

When I try to open a Classic (OS9) application, the Classic environment
opens automatically within OS X and the application I originally tried
to open runs within this. I don't boot to Classic or do any dual
booting shenanigans.

In the System Preferences, there is a Classic icon under System that
allows me to set various Classic options, including starting when
logging in, warning before starting Classic, various memory usage
settings for Classic, and more.

OS 9/Classic does NOT appear as an option when under Startup Disk
preferences.

Sorry I can't provide too many details. It's been a long time since I
initially set it up and I use Classic less and less frequently every
week that passes. At least I know that in at least my circumstance,
Classic does work on Tiger.

Michael and Scott,

This is intriguing to me. My understanding was that Classic, and
therefore OS 9, wouldn't run on any of the later machines, particularly
any Intel-based machines. Are either of you running one of these? What
machines are you running? Are you running OS 9 in emulation of some sort
or as a stand-alone OS, that you can choose upon start-up?
In other words, more details, please! ;-P

Ann,

As far as I'm aware, Tiger does NOT support OS 9 in any form. Mac OS
X up to somewhere around 10.3 or so WOULD run OS 9 apps in, basically,
emulation form in what was known as Classic. However, OS X 10.4 dropped
that provision, as far as I know. But, then again, if an Apple rep told
you this, it might be true. Was the rep one of the sales phone reps or a
tech support rep, either at an Apple store or via the phone support? If
there's an Apple store near you, you might consider dropping in there
and asking them about your situation. The people staffing Apple's genius
bar are pretty knowledgeable and, usually, more than willing to help
out, and NOT just because that's what they get paid for, either!

Hi All,

I have a G5 running Panther that I purchased several years ago. A

So I am asking the people on this list that work on Macs if there are

problems with eps graphics in framemaker

The IT tech has done data transfer rate
benchmarks
and data is moving back and forth between the server and my laptop
normally;
laptop is an IBM ThinkPad T60p wide screen, with 3GB RAM, ATI graphics.
The
EPS graphics load just fine on my old Pentium III workstation.

Any insight as to what's happening would be appreciated.

Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-10-01 Thread Michael O'Neill
Vivek Jain @ Adobe discusses single-sourcing with RoboHelp and
FrameMaker on the Adobe Technical Communication blog:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/

"At the same time, you manage the content from FrameMaker files in a set
of special folders, providing you the flexibility of continuously
updating the content as you edit the files in FrameMaker.

To make the workflow smoother, RoboHelp provides a visual indicator of
whether the content in RoboHelp is out of synchronization with
FrameMaker content or not."

This is looking interesting. Anyone know of a good listserv devoted to
discussing RoboHelp?

On the one hand, you complain about FrameMaker's "many limitations"
(such as?). On the other hand, you're suggesting dumping it and settling
for RoboHelp's printed output. Are you kidding?

It sounds like you really _don't_ know what you're looking for -- you

Frame in Windows emulation

Linux is not (yet) a popular OS in
my office.)

Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-25 Thread Michael O'Neill
I wondered the same thing. From what it looks like to me, RoboHelp
supports Framemaker in that it imports .fm and .mif files. Since they
don't list Frame as a supported "authoring environment", it doesn't look
like it is heavily integrated (/assumption).

Here's what I gleaned off the website:

"Support for Adobe FrameMaker 8 (Enhanced)

Import multiple Adobe FrameMaker(r) files (MIF and FM) at one time with
tables of contents, indexes, and glossaries. Apply conditional build
tags or user-defined variables to content before importing or when it's
time to publish. Map FrameMaker styles to RoboHelp styles when importing
MIF files. Repurpose FrameMaker content for HTML publishing on import
and use Topic Alias Markers to identify context-sensitive help."
   http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/features/

"Which authoring environment does RoboHelp 7 support other than the
built-in HTML editor?
RoboHelp 7 supports Adobe Dreamweaver(r) CS3; Macromedia(r)
Dreamweaver 8 from Adobe; Microsoft FrontPage 2003; HomeSite 5.5; and
Microsoft Word 2007, Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000."
http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/faq/

"Does RoboHelp 7 integrate with FrameMaker?
You can import FrameMaker 8 MIF and FM files with style mapping,
conditional tags, user-defined variables, and Captivate content intact.
Additional RoboHelp 7 and FrameMaker integration can be experienced
through new Adobe Technical Communication Suite software, which includes
RoboHelp 7, FrameMaker 8, Captivate 3, and Adobe Acrobat(r) 3D Version 8
software."

I'd be interested in learning more about how these two tools work

Annoying FrameMaker Question

Hi Folks,

I am using FrameMaker 6.x and am very annoyed with the size of the
Show/Hide Conditional Text window. It isn't wide enough to show the
full names of my conditions, and doesn't appear to allow resizing.

Does anyone know if:

1) There is a way to scroll the conditions in the Show and Hide
columns sideways? Arrow keys don't work.

2) Or, if there's a way to resize the entire window. This is a
long shot, but FrameMaker has a long history of surprising me with
capabilities I assumed it did not have...

Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael,

I've used ResourceHacker to modify a number of Frame's irritatingly

be able to fix your problem with it. The file you want to BACKUP!!

Question about TOC, LOF, LOT

2008-02-18 Thread Michael O'Neill
Yes LOF and LOT are both examples of front matter, but so is a ToC.

IMHO, the only things (standard elements) that should come before the
ToC are the Cover and the Legal page (if not at the end). Anything else
will likely just be contrary to user expectations.

With that said, there ARE exceptions to every rule, and this may be one
(though on the surface, it doesn't sound like it). Before acquiescing,
I'd ask for a better reason than the "front matter" one.

Windows command for moving a window or dialog box

2008-03-13 Thread Michael O'Neill
One additional point: If you can't seem to move the dialog or window
into a viewable area using the arrow keys, you can follow Stuart's
instructions except when it comes to using the arrow keys, you can press
the Up arrow key ONCE (any arrow key will probably work) and then move
your mouse around (don't click!).

If your dialog box is off-monitor, make it the active window by choosing

its command from the menu (or by typing the keyboard shortcut), then
type Alt+spacebar to activate the title bar menu, and type M for Move.
(Important! Do not move your mouse!) Experiment with holding down
different arrow keys until the dialog box comes back into view.

Recovery

2008-03-14 Thread Michael O'Neill
Here's what I would do:

1) Back up a copy of both the original and the recovered versions to
someplace safe.
2) Open the recovered version in FrameMaker.
3) Open the original version in FrameMaker (might have to force it).
4) Compare the differences between the two versions using FrameMaker's
compare feature. (File-> Utilities-> Compare Documents) Select the
"Summary and Composite Documents" option when doing so.
5) See which version has the most up-to-date information. Save that
version over the original version.

Note: I just sort of developed this method by intuition. I'd be glad to
hear if anyone does something different/there are problems with my
method/easier ways to determine whether or not to go with a recovery
version of a .fm file.

Export a FM book to single Word file?

I'd like to export my Frame book (easily) to one giant Word file, and I
haven't figured out how to do it other than one file at a time, then put
them back together by hand in Word.

I have many outside reviewers who need to review and add comments
electronically, and like it or not, Word is the lingua franca of most of
the
world. My reviewers are fine that the pages look a little weird in the
Frame
RTF export.

I've been researching the commenting features in Acrobat 8, and I keep
coming across this statement: "Commenting tools are only available in
PDFs
that have commenting enabled." OK. but it looks as if I can't enable
commenting rights from the PDFs that come out of FM8's File > Save as
PDF
feature (unless I'm missing something). I don't really want to buy full
Acrobat just for this feature.

Sending an enormous zip file of little Word documents isn't very
efficient
for the reader on the other end.

There's no RTF option in File > Save Book As.

Ideas?

Export a FM book to single Word file?

The second answer is more specific, requiring "Acrobat
Professional or Adobe LiveCycle".

32 separate Word files, they'll choose
the
PDF.

No real confusion except for the fact that the FAQ page clearly has not
been updated since Acrobat 7.0.

If you look at the product feature comparison matrix for Acrobat 8.0
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/matrix.html
you will clearly see that the feature described as:
Enable Adobe Reader? users to participate in reviews with complete
commenting and markup tools, including sticky notes, highlighter, lines,
  shapes, and stamps
is only supported by the Professional and 3D versions of the Acrobat
product suite.

Marketing a product: which language for the documentation

Server-based (hosted) documentation and user comments (DocBook?)

One possible workflow would be:
FrameMaker-> ePublisher-> Wiki (MoinMoin, MediaWiki, something else?).

Wiki would allow users to add comments, enhance topics as they see fit.
However, I don't think there is a workflow for round-tripping.

Can anyone recommend technologies to do the following:

* Hosted documentation, available on the internet as a web

* Each doc topic allows users to add comments. (e.g. "Here's a
better example to do this task...")

* Management tools to moderate user comments, and to handle
documentation updates (retaining the comments).

* Authoring tools to produce said documentation.

The open source community exploits these technologies. How do they do

Server-based (hosted) documentation and user comments (DocBook?)

2008-10-31 Thread Michael O'Neill
One additional note, MoinMoin wiki can be configured to allow users to
output content as/via/through (not sure of the right terminology)
DocBook. I haven't explored this yet to see whether that's HTML output
or PDF output (or both).

This is something I'd like to know more about, as to me it would be
pretty compelling for us to take care of the source->wiki workflow and
let users generate their own PDFs on demand from the wiki, if they so
desire.

Best Indexing Tool for FrameMaker?

"Example/Scenario" section that will appear in various portions of the
book that will explain the concepts in terms of an actual example.

Runnning Windows on Mac news

2006-04-14 Thread Michael O'Neill
I just watched someone here at the office run Parallels and switch between
OS X and Windows. It looked pretty slick, especially with the copy and

He said setup was pretty painless and unbelievably fast. He was running
Win2003 and OS X on a Powerbook Pro (dual core).

I only witnessed, and didn't have time to work with, anything myself...but
it seemed to be very fast in both operating systems. Of course, I wouldn't
want to run Photoshop in Windows and Final Cut in OS X at the same time...

Does anyone in the group have experience with either of these tools? My

MSWord files.

We get PowerPoint slides to edit and clean up for delivery. In places,
artwork has been pasted into the slide, but contains white boxes that

We need a tool that lets us remove text in the graphics where we do not

Are either of these the right tool for this? Which tool would you

The people staffing Apple's genius

out, and NOT just because that's what they get paid for, either!

Subject: OS 9 Applications on Tiger

Hi All,

I have a G5 running Panther that I purchased several years ago. A
purchased
an upgrade for one of my applications and it requires OS 10.4 (Tiger) to
run. I was told by the Apple rep that Tiger would run my OS 9
applications
on this machine just fine. Since I do not have the New Mac technology,
which
I understand will not run OS 9 appications, I should be OK.

So I am asking the people on this list that work on Macs if there are
any
problems that they have running into running OS 9 applications with
Tiger. I
know you all will tell me the UNVARNISHED truth rather than a rep trying
to
sell me the software.

So please let me know of any problems that you have run into with Tiger.

Thanks All
Z

OS 9 Applications on Tiger

2006-10-09 Thread Michael O'Neill
I'm running this on a Mac Mini with a G4 proc.

It's been a long time since I set it up, but as best as I can remember,
I installed the Classic environment as part of the initial setup and
configuration of Tiger. This required the use of a "Classic"
environment disk (again, if I remember correctly).

When I try to open a Classic (OS9) application, the Classic environment
opens automatically within OS X and the application I originally tried
to open runs within this. I don't boot to Classic or do any dual
booting shenanigans.

In the System Preferences, there is a "Classic" icon under "System" that
allows me to set various Classic options, including starting when
logging in, warning before starting Classic, various memory usage
settings for Classic, and more.

In other words, more details, please! ;-P

We run Tiger and you have to take an OS9 disc and load it as well.
However, the Macs that run both windows and OS10 run Frame for the PC
just fine. We are using it here. FYI.

For what it's worth:
I'm running 10.4.8 and still using some classic applications. When
setting up the Mac, I had to install the Classic environment as well.

Acrobat / FrameMaker conflicts during install

I want to do a "clean" installation but before I do, I have some
concerns because of what is on the terminal that I "inherited" (with
Windows XP Office and the service packs, etc.).

Or not.

(Remember the good old days, when a program was all in one folder, I
mean "directory"?

(I kept getting a message after the Acrobat 8.0
setup procedure was well into progress that "Setup has detected that you
already have a more functional product installed. Setup will now
terminate.")

BTW, the Adobe docs really play up the purchased support plans (even for
"defective products"), leading me to believe that free telephone support
for initial setup is no more. But somewhere, I did find that there
apparently is 90-day free phone support for initial setup problems.

Am I correct on this?
