COOL ... at that time they refused to add support for MNG as it
would add 10 KiO of bloat ... now we have 50 MiO bloat of the
browser + 20 MiO bloat of Flu$h instead :-D

There used to be a draft back in 2007 recommending Theora
for coming HTML5 ... but it was trashed after pressure of some
companies (Adobe, Banana/Apple, ...) ... and now 9 years later
we have 10 times more bloated browsers and still no usable
standard, and most video pages still rudely cry for Flu$h.

You are wrong. The Internet used more or less to work for 99% of the

This (and without HeartBleed's, MD5-certificates, crippled 40-bit keys,...)
definitely makes sense when hunting around big bucks or sensitive
personal data ... however obligatory HTTPS for things like BUGzilla's
and user or developer forums isn't that sane.

Maybe cca 80% of stuff added during recent 4 years.

But the very same Google notoriously tries to prevent people from
downloading movies from its Loo-Tube. 10 times viewed -> 10 times wasted
bandwidth. Now let's assert than bandwidth is an issue. :-D

We have a codec with legal problems ... when the legal problems expire
one day the codec will be deprecated ... maybe H265 or H266 will be "in"

The new keyword (together with Theora+Vorbis codecs)

Definitely NO. Why? Becasue it does NOT need 1000's of

Instead of the malware link "https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer; they

I had FireFox pretty well working on my great Pentium 1 laptop with 64 MiO RAM
some years ago ... nowadays the Internet is on the limit of usability with
Pentium 3 and 256 MiO. When are they going to drop Pentium 3 and XP?
Can I have the good old paper mail of FreeDOS lists?

Also the Opera development after version 9 is shameful ... bloat, many
new "features"
(most of them useless), the absurd JavaScript "performance" race, notoriously
bad quality of releases (the infamous NO-SCRIPT-BUG ...) ... and killing their
native engine after version 12.

The world doesn't need "fastest" JavaScript engines needing
several 100 MiO RAM, and even less Adobe Flu$h.

The "current standards" are just absurdly increasing cost for essentially same
functionality (we could use mail, post in forums, upload and download files,
use
CVS/SVN/GIT, Bugzilla, online maps, timetables, ...) already 10 or 15 years
ago. The "new great user experience" means just that Internet more and

And it's indeed safer and more efficient to have

pick your volume, [F3] goto [F6] root ... find affected file (you can

Nice to read this :-)

Error messages are of the type:
 Page fault cr2=1002 at eio=11f0

This message seems to originate from desperately
obsolete CWSDPMI bundled with Arachne. Solutions:

[0] Get HDPMI32 and make it resident

HDPMI32 -r

(desperately obsolete CWSDPMI will get ignored then)

--- or ---

Get CWSDPMI version 7 and replace the obsolete version with it.

PS: Did you try to reinstall Arachne ???

Well, Arachne APM's can't be used as-is with other browsers, but the core

1. Save to page holding the crappy Flush video into a HTML file
2. Process this file with YTCRACK.EXE - another HTML file as output
3. Feed the output HTML file into your browser

Note that I didn't test recently, so info might be outdated or wrong.

Could you please try this version and tell me if it feels ok now on your PC?

YES it's indeed better :-)

understand that the 'pngzopfli' must be another optimizer
 (with better compression, I guess)

Indeed. I took the 6 biggest PNG's and reduced them from 101 KiB
to 69 KiB : http://users.freebasic-portal.de/dos386/optimized.zip
(I hope I didn't cancel any transparency, 2 of them could be optimized
even more but I couldn't do it due to strange transparency design ...)

For next version there are at least 3 issues:

- Keyboard

- PNG's

- Docs about OS support: My version of Atomix can't be easily
compiled to a native
DOS binary, but you can use the Win32 binary in DOS with HX DOS Extender

Re: [Freedos-user] Atomiks - retro remake of Atomix

2013-06-24 Thread dos386
Hi

I don't have this problem... Neither on the linux build, nor on the
windows build (tested right now via virtualbox)

probably you have 3 GHz CPU

Keypresses are queued indeed, and I purposely don't 'eat them away'
because it allows to play in advance (esp. useful when moving an atom
around, so I can press all directions, and wait until the atom reaches
 its destination).

I don't understand ... but could you eat away all but 2 or
all but 1 very last keypress to keep it useful for you and
fix the BUG on slow CPU ?

My theory is that on your system, it takes more time to draw the
moving-box animation than it takes SDL to repeat the keypress.. the only
reason I can see why this would happen is because of lack of performance

That's what I suspected too

noticed any CPU usage spike when playing?

I have a constant power CPU fan, impossible to detect CPU usage spike :-(

But of course I'll happily accept any patches, should anyone get the
motivation to make the game noticeably smaller.

Optimizing the PNG's would be pretty trivial (and fast on your CPU) ;-)

Ideas, if you want to deal with HTML:

1. HTML to text converter (with nice output) ... TOTALCOMMANDER has
a such HTML viewer

2. Simple offline HTML viewer, HTML to pixels (BMP or PNG) ... with
tables and simple styles

3. Wiki to HTML converter

4. Wiki viewer (Wiki to text or Wiki to pixels)

IMHO there is no point to start another browser, if you (later) want to
deal with browsers, look at Arachne or Dillo.

only Linux Windows (and should build on any modern platform where SDL is

I deprecate modern platforms :-(

This doesn't have much in common with FreeDOS

more than you think ? ;-)

 Today I published

Thanks :-)

a remake of the old 1990 Atomix game for DOS
(that's one of the games I spent entire nights on in my youth

Do you have the original? How bloated is it?

I used all graphics from the original (with the specific
authorization of Atomix copyright holders for usage in my project

Interesting ...

I'm sorry if you feel this is spamming.

It is not (thanks to HX ...)

BUG's / suggestions:

* keyboard is buggy ... it buffers too much and the red square notoriously
runs beyond target position ... disable buffering or eat away and discard
keypresses until buffer is empty before waiting for a new keypress

* it's bloated (100 x more than the original ?) ... some ideas to reduce bloat:
* * optimize the PNG's (brewn with M$-PAINT???) by factor 2 lossless or even
more (reduce black text on white screen from 8bpp to 4 bpp, loss will be
invisible) using PNGOUT or ZOPFLI-OPTI-PNG (gives 70 KiB)
* * drop the PNG's in favor of raw compressed pixel arrays on a common palette
and drop LIBPNG then
* * reduce the WAV's from 44.1 KHz and 16 bit to 22.05 KHz and 8 bit
(loss will be inaudible)
* * use a smaller MOD library
* * include some simple Deflate decompress code and drop ZLIB

The good news is that it's open source (is the original from 1990 also open
source???), the bad news that it's bloated (but that's fixable ... theoretically
... how bloated is the original???). Maybe I'll port it to my OS one day :-)

There are reasons why I deprecate modern platforms.

Atomiks runs in DOS with HX?

YES ... why don't you test? Got no DOS (evil grin) ?

  * keyboard is buggy ... it buffers too much
Does it work better with Atomiks in other OS?

NO. Same BUG with XP and HX ... NOT a HX BUG :-)

(HX bugs are bunched elsewhere: bttr-software.de/forum/board_entry.php?id=7492)

PNG is supposed to compress things already

but the existing PNG's inside ATOM are poorly compressed and
have junk CHUNK's (even PHYS !!!)

a smaller palette should not make a big difference

It does. And you could have 1 palette for the complete app,
rather than a separate (same or de-facto same) palette in every PNG file.

 Try GIF?

No: I DEPRECATE GIF ;-)

WAV sound better at 44 kHz 16 bit than at 22 kHz 8 bit

The WAV's are 400 ms ... not hours of HiFi music ... you
won't hear the difference (we badly need a double-blind test ...)

You could use OGG and decompress to RAM... (evil

Not worth for that little amount of sound (you might Deflate
them ... if it helps ... or DELTA-filter before Deflate)

  * * include some simple Deflate decompress code and drop ZLIB
 How big is zlib?

100 KiB (RTFB)

 How about tunz?

2.5 KiB but 8086 ASM, not C ;-)

I already tested. It already works there but needs MSVCRT (e.g. from
ReactOS 0.3.14; not newer 0.3.15, that won't work)

In what function does it crash? Does it crash with every executable?

Re: [Freedos-user] Active GUI development?

I found that there are almost no desktop GUIs being developed

There used to be and are many GUI's ... just most of them
are abandoned as buggy and IIRC Jim Hall removed them all
from FreeDOS list some time ago.

http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.Links#toc4

A modern web browser perhaps? Trouble is, any version of Firefox
past version 2 roughly isn't going to work in a dos environment

You got Firefox 2 working in FreeDOS ??? Please share your technology
:-) :-) :-) :-)

If you are not the only person who uses your computer, dos is not
going to be a good choice for a primary operating system.

Why ?

If software that requires utilization of multiple processing cores is
needed, dos is definitely not an option.

COOL ...

steer you towards ReactOS, but ReactOS isn't anywhere near
 feature complete let alone stable.

ReactOS is NOT a DOS GUI and never will be ;-)

X is nice, but there is also Syllable and Visopsys.

???

become more common, dos development is going to become less popular

COOL ...

I'll be surprised if GUIs that are comparable to Windows 3.11 let
alone Windows 98SE get developed for freedos.

I'm NOT going to develop such ... because Windows 98SE
is NOT and never was a DOS GUI ;-)

Should freedos development focus on attracting developers of
 new software applications?
Maybe not, maybe Syllable, Linux, and Visopsys are better platforms for new
 software

Maybe there are better mailing lists for your posts ;-)

With regard to Michael's question, I am not intending (immediately) to
install DOS on any of my computers

COOL ...

PS: if anyone else is interested in DOS GUI, then indeed look at Georg's
nanox-microwindows-nxlib-fltk-for-dos thing ... this is the only one
under development and there are some spectacular apps already
running (modern browser, modern text editor/office, modern BOCHS
(unreleased, but I trust Georg that his shot is genuine and the experimental
DOS port of BOCHS indeed exists), ...).

Is the green really needed?

// biosdisk(int cmd, int drive, int head, int track, int sector, int nsects,
 void *buffer);

This is no longer useful. You need the INT $13 Extensions for LBA.

And of course you need a _T_H_I_C_K_ warning before writing back to the disk.

Re: [Freedos-user] uHex - a hex editor for DOS released under GPL

2013-02-11 Thread dos386
uHex is a simple and fast hex viewer for DOS. It has been written
with care to work fast even on an 8086 CPU, providing support for
large files (up to 2 GiB) while using minimal amounts of memory.

COOL :-)

It's rather trivial but in my minimal test it worked.

As you might know, there are already 1'000'000'000'000 hex viewers
and editors around ... so the market is rather saturated, but most of
them are rather unusable, so you could beat them all one day :-)

I ran the 1.1 CD. When I got to the MBR selection at the end I selected
the boot loader. Boot yields non system disk.

Ran CD again. Selected make floppy. Nothing was written to the disk.

Ran CD again. Selected write FreeDOS to MBR. Boot is OK.

Should the boot loader and floppy selections be expected to work?

I had thought to use FreeDOS to do the DOS work or play, then
reboot back into Windows for other things.

Make space for FreeDOS:

http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.PartErase

The ultra easiest way to play DOS games is DOSBox (emulator)

Saves you from the horor of having DOS

unless you really want to play in raw DOS (probably a bad
idea on modern hardware, esp. for sound).

Excellent idea, until ...

My computer runs Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and I certainly don’t want
 to mess up that.

Use DBAN :-)

had thought to use FreeDOS to do the DOS work or play, then reboot back into
 Windows for other things.

Multiboot, see above (install FreeDOS today, delete Win8 later).

Yes, of course, though rebooting is less convenient than just running VM

Yeah ...

 plain DOS (well... with DOS4GW).

Then the complete ReactOS discussion is pointless.

1. Get WC II working under FreeDOS (troubleshoot DOG4/SW or try DOS32/A)
2. Get the network working

Only the included map editor needed Windows (3.1 or higher) to run

HX doesn't support Win16 ... ReacOS probably neither.

NT sucks less than ME (in some areas).

 [Freedos-user] Windows 98SE screwing up Freedos 1.1

Worx for me with METAKERN.

Is there a simple way to repair the freedos installation so
that Windows and Freedos can happily coexist?

YES. Backup Windaube98 BS, fix FreeDOS, backup FreeDOS BS,
set up METAKERN with those 2 BS's.

Looks like freedos command.com got renamed to command.dos
 and I've already renamed autoexec.bat to fdauto.bat, but fdconfig.sys
 seems to be missing.

Make sure NOT TO HAVE OR USE command.com autoexec.bat and
config.sys for FreeDOS, especially during installing Windaube.
Rename them BEFORE.

ReactOS would support these old games, but there hasn't been another
release for months and I can't even get the latest trunk to build.

I din't try ReactOS + METAKERN (use FREELDR instead ???),
other ReactorOS stuff belongs into ReactOS forums.

Running an unlicensed copy of 98 is not the best idea where there's
the issue of 98 having a lot of bugs and being out of support.

- When anouncing a bugfix release of something that hasn't been fully
announced recently, write 1 or 2 sentences about what it actually is,
before discussing the improvements.

Example:

 WCD 5.2.0
Erwin Waterlander has released wcd 5.2.0. The new option '-I' (ignore
 diacritics) is
available for DOS for a limited set of code pages. The 16bit version is now
 built with
OpenWatcom. Support for Borland has been dropped. Most other changes were
done for Unicode support, which is not available in the DOS versions.

Re: [Freedos-user] Dillo web browser for DOS

2011-11-23 Thread dos386
I wonder if a workaround would be to detect Dillo on the web site

Please don't do it like that ... it's just recycling this B.S. technology:

if (detectIE5)
  make IE5 happy
else
  if (detectIE5.5)
make IE5.5 happy
  else
if (detectIE6)
  make IE6 happy
else
  if (detectOpera)
make Opera happy
  else
ASS'ume IE7 and make IE7 happy
  endif
endif
  endif
endif

So my proposal is: simplification YES, detect Dillo
(or Arachne or DOSLynx or whatwever) NO.

SSL, FTP and uploads of files are not supported yet.

Upload works mostly in Win32 Dillo.

Here is a screenshot of freedos.org using dillo for Win32 and View mobile

??? I can't see it :-(

Anyway, the freedos.org layout is an issue,
but for me the wishlist sorted by importance would be:

0. Hangers
1. Uploads
2. HTTPS / SSL
3. Layout

FASM forum (php-BB2) looks good (as long as no big images inside) but

Long messages have appeared from people that want a multitasking DOS
How about developing more TSRs for multitasking?

???

A more realistic goal to Freedos may be to expand the batch
programming language to be compatible with newer windows
versions, but keeping retro compatible with DOS batch programs

Indeed more realistic and potentially interesting (I don't need it badly
myself ...), just advanced spawning (multitasking) and piping won't work.

What is missing ?

I removed it (and most other GUIs)

GUI installer IIRC got removed cca 2004 or 2005).

because too much attention was going into making an awesome
GUI for FreeDOS, and no effort into making FreeDOS better.
And everyone and their dog was submitting their own DOS GUI

I agree that GUI should wait until the kernel is reliable (2040 now is ?)
but can't reproduce how tabuizing out the GUI's could be useful.

Anyway, the software list has many strange items
even in BASE: EXE2BIN, KC, ...

No Win16 emulation in HX ... fortunately there exist barely any

ReactOS (WARNING: development is slow. Talking about that prohibited)

It's just off-topic here ;-)

 Linux (various flavors)

CRAP (needs at least 4 cores per 4 GHz and 8 GiB

 Windows 7 (yuck, Microsoft monopoly)

Re: [Freedos-user] Will Freedos support more modern hardware?

2011-08-21 Thread dos386
I would imagine that Freedos in 16 bit mode can't use multiple cores

It can't actively take benefit from them, but it still runs, FYI

One of the problems with DOS that I recall is a total
 lack of hardware protection

Right.

 Unfortunately, accessing hardware directly
instead of through a __well__ __defined__ __interface__
makes supporting that software a nightmare.

Right. Do you know an OS with such a __well__ __defined__ __interface__ ???

I'm thinking the goal for protected mode Freedos that is 32 or 64 bit
should be providing a hypervisor to run multiple instances of 16 bit
 Freedos or even Linux instances.

I'm sufficiently happy with ONE FreeDOS-16 instance and
ZERO Loonix instances.

ReactOS is possibly a decade out from being stable.

Please bug on ReactOS forum about this.

I think there were some ideas about DOS extenders for using
multi core multithreading within DOS apps

HX 2.15 + 7-ZIP ... never came out.

pbzip2 compresses multiple parts of a file in parallel, so you
can compress one large file much faster by using many cores

1. Compression degrades
2. How do you glue the out fragments then ???
3. Needs =16 GiB RAM for file cache (and input should be 8 GiB)

Why would I take the effort to port mencoder

It's useless ;-)

Yes I can imagine making 1000 thumbnails in DOS or compressing
a CD-ROM ISO with pbzip2 in DOS in theory.

Why theory only ?

But then I also know that FAT32 cannot even
handle DVD or BluRay ISO file sizes
and my 1000 pics would not get from SD card to the DOS PC at decent
speed anyway, single core thumbnailing still faster than USB...

Voila:

1. Bring out FreeDOS 1.1
2. Fix 4 GiB file size limit and improve USB
999'999'999'999. Add support for 1 CPU cores

But maybe others have more ideas why to DOS on 4 GHz 12-cores.

Video (but not MENCODER) ?

IIRC such discussions (64-bit - 1'000'000'000 cores - GUI OS -
multitaxing - ...) come again and again ... so what :-D

No. BZIP2 has a maximum block size of 900k anyway and

Deflate and LZMA have no block limit ;-)

  2. How do you glue the out fragments then ???

 See above.

Not really. You don't know the compressed size in advance.
Where do you write compressed block 1 when size
of block 0 is unknown ???

It works fine in Linux already

What useful and unique work can it do ???

 and you can dual-boot :-p

FreeDOS + EDR-DOS :-p

Because in practice downloading 1000 pics from your cam
in DOS will be slower than making 1000 thumbs in 1 core.

Right ... there is space for improvements of DOS USB drivers.

 You mean video processing?

YES

First add NCQ support, RAID support

Why ?

a filesystem like ext2 or even much better, a
 write-combining cache, accelerated graphics, surround
digital audio... And then you have Linux again anyway

Nothing of those is needed (fixing 4 GiB problem appreciated, though)

No need to backup disk image ;-)

how you do large backup work yourself now? say 3 gig or so?

Copy gig files or archive and compress then.

Personally, I'd probably just burn the files to DVD-RW from within a
modern OS, esp. if you only need to backup 3 GB.

FYI, there are adapters to make an internal IDE
HD somewhat exchangable. So, add the backup HD,
copy bloat, remove the backup HD.

I forget, what are the limits for the .ZIP format, 65000 files?

2011-08-04 Thread dos386
Could someone tell me if it's possible to have multiple instances
of (Free)DOS installed to the same partition?

YES.

Unfortunately, the kernel looks for FDCONFIG.SYS and CONFIG.SYS
only (I'd kick the latter, BTW), so all FreeDOS kernels will share this
one file, except you patch the kernel.

You can boot multiple kernels using METAKERN. It works
great, but needs some manual setup. You can drop FreeDOS, EDRDOS
and ME on same partition, but you MUST use FDCONFIG.SYS ,
DCONFIG.SYS , FDAUTO.BAT and DRAUTO.BAT.

There is absolutely no need to dig out old dead
1.0 distro utils from their graves ;-)

To test multiple kernels, the easiest solution is to rename them all
(KERNEL36.SYS KERNEL38.SYS KERNEL40.SYS) and then

COPY KERNEL38.SYS KERNEL.SYS
boom (CTL-ALT-DEL)

(test 2038)

COPY KERNEL40.SYS KERNEL.SYS
boom (CTL-ALT-DEL)

(test 2040)

Would this be a good time (doubtful) to
suggest XCHG as a mnemonic for swapping filenames?

+ 1

or SWAP ;-) I need this frequently too.
