Re: [Audyssey] World Building Games
mm, but the thing about Freeciv is that it's very text-based, and it doesn't work in it's own environment like other games. If you route your JAWS and PC cursor, you can read some of the screen in a way, but some of the game isn't textual where we must find a solution, like, at the begining, it's a good idea to map your kingdom. If I remember properly, all your choices are made through clicking labelled buttons, and I think there was a menue bar. It' practially nearly exactly like Civilisation, you chose a civilisation and it's turn-based. I could do things like move around the screen and click on the civilisation I wanted because it used radio buttons, name my capital as well, but then when it gets to the rest of the game it became too difficult to try and make sense of how to get to stuff. Re: [Audyssey] World Building Games
Hi Ari, Yeah, I have done some playing around with Freeciv. The Linux port of Freeciv isn't too bad with Orca since the interface has been designed with the GTK+ 2.x graphics toolkit. The problem with the Windows port of Freeciv is Jaws and Window Eyes are totally brain dead to open source graphic toolkits like QT and GTK+. As a result to make Freeciv accessible to a Windows screen reader such as Jaws the front end needs to be rewritten in Microsoft's proprietary Win32 toolkit. That said I do think making an accessible version of Freeciv should be pretty easy. I see two possabilities. One is to rewrite the front end using the Win32 API, or just forget about the front end and have everything spoken on screen using Sapi or similar TTS output. Perhaps once MOTA and Raceway are done such an updated Freeciv project would be a fun and useful project. ari wrote: Hi Thomas and John, There is an open-source civilisation-type game, which could, I think, be made accessible with not too much effort, especially for us who like that sort of thing. Many elements of the game is text-based, it's just a question of the interface being quite difficult to control using JAWS. The game is called Freeciv, sorry, but I don't know the address. There was even once a discussion on the forum about making an accessible front-end, but that sort of never took off. Re: [Audyssey] World Building Games
Hi Tom. I'll look over freeciv with Hal, and then have a think and contact the devs. In my experience, people who are highly dedicated to projects like freeciv are often incredibly happy that their pet creations will be accessible, and quite willing to make a few changes here and there. Fully rewriting the front end or adding complete sapi support might be a bit of a big thing to ask, - but if there were some more minimal changes, eg, changes in layout or labling which could help, I've often found that small dedicated groups of developers are incredibly happy to make such changes. Actually, in these sorts of situations, I often think working with the creators of games and programs like Freeciv is an incredibly good thing for everyone, and better than either A, giving up on something entirely, or B, trying to just keep it within the Vi gaming community. Just my personal thoughts on this subject after being in a good many of those sorts of conversations with devs. Beware the Grue! [Audyssey] Civilization for the blind
Hi All, No, I haven't found something suitable to claim this title yet, sadly. Nevertheless, I want to voice my support for such a game. Civilization is a game concept I've always really liked, ever since I got to listen to my brother playing the original when I was quite little. I stumbled on Freeciv a while ago, and was taken with it. There was, and possibly still is, a client written using the Win32 API as well as the GTK version, though I think it's classified as unsupported and deprecated at this point. It was semi-accessible, though not perfectly friendly by any means. At any rate, it might prove a starting point for any programmer interested in improving the access to it. I hope somebody will be able to design a way for us to play this kind of game. We have Shades of Doom already--something modeled on the granddaddy of all FPS-style games. We need something modeled on the granddaddy of turn-based strategy. [Audyssey] Domain of Heroes
Hi all, Well, it's yet another browser RPG. And it really is an RPG. It's got pretty good story too. What I also like about this is that it has a nice battle system, where in a dungeon you fight hoards of monsters until you leave the battle or die, so I gained about 2 levels without really loosing much health. More things I like about it? The fact that the help files are detailed and when getting help for skills, it says very high malee attack, instead of a malee attack that does X It also has an accessible map. The only disadvantage that I see so far right now is in the quest description when you receive a quest, you have the oppertunity to jump back to the questgivers location to complete the quest. That's not accessible because the main links, logout, the different tabs as they call them we don't know which tab we're on, isn't labled. All it says is clear, however I have managed to complete the first quest because the action menu is accessible talking to NPCs, shopping, etc. I'll be signing up to the forums in a bit to inform Arren, the developer, about these issues, and hopefully he'd be so nice as to fix them. I think if this game does become fully accessible it'll be just as good as Sryth is. Hi Orin. I've just signed up, am waiting for my mail and reading the docs. It strikes me as the sort of thing which could be either really good or incredibly tedious depending upon A, the quality of the writing, and B, the complications with navigating the pages, usually these tend to go together in my experience, sinse the flashier the game, the worse the writing, and the harder to navigate, Sryth of course being King in all these areas. I like the idea of reducing the micro management aspects to let you concentrate on other things, but as I said I'll wait and see. Beware the Grue! Re: [Audyssey] Text adventure fighting games
Actually there is at least one z-code game I can think of with RPG mechanics. Called hmm... can't remember exactly, but something with wumpus in it I think. Anyway its sort of like the old hunt the wumpus game, only with a lot more levels, a massive set of caverns to explore, and a lot of levelling to do and items and weapons to earn. Unfortunately I could never really get into it since the plot is weird and you start out as some weird news reporter or something, but ah well. There's a lot more RPG style games for tads, the most notable of which is magocracy, which I found rather interesting. You play a hedge wizard, aka a wizard with almost no magical power or at best slight of hand elusions or hardly useful spells, and you have to go up against 4 powerful wizards, traps, and monsters within the castle and try to earn the crown. It takes some strategy and careful use of the rpg mechanics. These can be found on ifarchive, along with a few others. Usually if they have some sort of rpg mechanics or battle system its mensioned in the description. -- From: dark [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, December 06, 2008 2:01 PM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Text adventure fighting games Action and Z code don't really go together exactly. [Audyssey] Domain of heroes, inaccessible.
Hi. I've pretty well checked out the game, and it'll need a fair few alterations I think. firstly, apart from the map and npcs, everything else in the game is graphical. This includes names of items, buttons to activate tabs, checks to see what in game messages are being filtered etc. Also, the page uses hotspots rather than standard detectable links, this is why the options to open the quest tab, inventory tab etc just don't appear to a screen reader, they're not even buttons. Then, the entire combat and action system is timer and bar based. All the text related to monsters and fighting is entirely about choosing which actions your character does to which monsters at what time. What's actually happening is dependent entirely upon the progress of graphical bars, --- which fact also means that page refreshing and changing is a pest to say the least. The map is indeed as Orin said, highly accessible, as is the basic game message box which reports talking to npcs, room descriptions etc, but for everything else, I think some heavy work needs to be done in a loot of labling and layout fixing. Even if that was fixed, I'm not really convinced on the combat system's accessibility, unless a refresh button was added and the game timer could be paysed somehow, I doubt very much though that this would be technically possible. If however the creator is willing to make the above mentioned changes, - brilliant, I'll be the first person to be playing, as there are some potentially quite nice things in this game (I like the idea of the chess esque combat). Re: [Audyssey] Text adventure fighting games
I really don't have a list of them sadly. They're rather rare. I can think of 2 tads ones off hand. Magocracy and one called battle sim demo. Magocracy is by far the more interesting of the two, battle sim demo is the more advanced in a sense however. As for Z Code, the only one I know of is the wumpus game, which I believe looking through my list of inform games is just called wumpus. I've been looking for more since then, but without much luck. -- From: dark [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, December 06, 2008 7:26 PM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Text adventure fighting games H, I didn't know about those. i've played a fair few if games with fights, but mostly these have been a matter of correct puzles, as in wearing the Claw or the Malinche game Pentari. [Audyssey] an online game that i discovered access ible!
hi all. i just searched today for some online text based games and man! i found a text based game that is based on mafias, assault etc. it's very cool, and from what i see, it's realy accessi ble. it didn't use captcha and something like it to difficulty and you can do many things, like *do many crimes, starting, for example, to stealing a cellphone, and advancing until robbing a military base. *levels based on experience *find a job and work on it, winning money and respect. *if you like, join a gang and work with the other members making plans and what you like. *buying equipments, like guns, armor, etc. *the possibility to go into a school to learn attack moves, learn how to use a gun and so on. and lots and lots of more things that i still didn't looked. i started playing today, so i didn't know much things about the game. if anyone is interested in joining it with me, the site is: http://exmafia.com hope you realy realy like it just like how i do. p.s: this game is not primary set to pvp. you can however kill peoples just like how you want, but the crimes and other stuff didn't needs it. best regards, Matheus --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] an online game that i discovered accessible!
There are a ton of games like this, they're all over the net, and they're boring really. The crimes don't really have descriptions or anything, it's all based on stats. People say Torn City is the best. People say Ommerta is the best. I don't know if I've found a Mafia game that I actually like. Not one has caught my interest. [Audyssey] Klango not working
Hi. Well I'm finally trying out the Klango player, and it's not working well at all. Running it in normal mode I get the first menue with sapi speaking (though I'm fairly certain not all the sounds), but then going to logue in or create an account, or indeed anything bar exit causes complete and utter silence and deadness that force me to quit the program. Running in Dx mode i get menue sounds, and no sapi speech. Apparently the player doesn't work with realtech hardware soundcards, which I believe mine is, odd, as it's the first 3D audio application I've ever! had trouble with at all. How irritating, I rather fancied the media catalogue. Beware the Grue! Re: [Audyssey] Klango not working
Actually, keep trying till it do work. Also if you are running XP make sure your speaker setting is set to 2.1 not on surround sound that will cause problems as well. Hmmm, I didn't think the program was this buggy, which is why i assumed it was my soundcard. I'll try the speaker thing. I must admit though, after quite a number of logue in attempts both with Klango player and Klango player Dx mode I wasn't getting any joy at all. Beware the Grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: K. Yeah, I know, they going to be coming out with a big release around Christmas. I found that if you restart your computer, give about 5 minutes before loading the player other wise it'll keep crashing on you. Re: [Audyssey] games that are not high deffinition audio compatible
Hi. I have an x fi PCMCIA card that goes in the respective slot for notebooks. It's not very accessible in it's own controls either, mine might actually be even worse than this netbook's realtek's fine adjustments are. It also doesn't work very well with stereo mix. That may be the fault of the pc I use it with, which is an alienware that has some somewhat lousy audio capabilities. Stereo mix doesn't work right with it. It's realtek hd audio as well. My sony vaio is also realtek hd audio but for some reason the sony doesn't have a control pannel aplet for it at all. I had an hp notebook for a while that had conexant audio, it was lousy, couldn't handle the pitches in topspeed hardly at all and it crackled like we've been talking about. My best laptop for sound cards is this little 400 dollar asus netbook. My best desktop is the one that has an audigy 2zs in it, the quality is excelent, the adjustment controls for it are very very unaccessible. *sigh* - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Friday, December 05, 2008 5:07 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] games that are not high deffinition audio compatible Hi, Well, Personally, I don't think anything comes close to the Soundblaster X-/FI. I am personally fond of that sound card, and the cheaper sound cards like the AC-97 are, well, cheap to me. However, I do use the AC-97 in my Linux boxes because Linux seams to like those cards for some reason. Valiant8086 wrote: Hi. heh I kinda like AC97. Got it on my old acer, works pretty nice. [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.
Hi everyone, Over the last few months I have really been getting into interactive fiction games, and really enjoy the old text adventures. As a result that has me thinking of some possible game projects after Mysteries of the Ancients and Raceway are released. One idea I have been thinking of is producing a handful of USA Games text adventures for Mac, Windows, and Linux that is similar to classic if titles. With web based games like Sryth around I have discovered the classic DND text adventure style game still can be quite addictive given enough adventures and puzzles in it. What do you all think of this idea? Cheers! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] World Building Games
Hi Dark, Well, seeing as this is open source the nice thing is any developer is allowed to modify the source, and make whatever changes as needed. I technically could do it myself if I had the time to sit down with it. Right now the issues seam to be on the Windows side of things as I do play Freeciv from time to time on Linux and Orca seams to do better with it than Jaws, Hal, or Window Eyes. One thing I'd want to make sure of is any access issues that get changed should effect the Windows port and not the Linux version as other than a few gripes here and there the linux version is ok. They have a Mac version as well, but can't test that versionwithout a MacBook. Anyway, as you pointed out generally the open source community is open to accessibility changes. They aren't like a commercial group of die-hard developers and most of them are just your average Joe who writes this program on the side. If you have programming skills they will let you on board to make whatever access changes are necessarily provided it doesn't effect their own use of the product. dark wrote: Hi Tom. Sounds good. I wood like to see a wizardry for the blind come out. That has Braille support as well. Only game that comes even close to that is Entombed. Re: [Audyssey] World Building Games
Hi, Yeah, that sounds about right. ThoughI am sure there is some central open source maintainer who guides the development of the product. Most open source software haz at least one central developer/maintainer who calls the shots so to speak. ari wrote: The problem is that I don't think there are central developers as such, it's just a huge group of people who came together and developed it, I think the only way to get in touch with them is through forum. Re: [Audyssey] Klango not working
Hmm I have had this issue with my realtech hd card. It does work in normal mode ok but it seems to do weird things to the system, making it rather unstable. I am sure its the stupid soundcard, I hate realtech. And at first I liked it. Hmph. It ran ok on my soundmax system. At 06:34 p.m. 7/12/2008, you wrote: Hi. Beware the Grue! well it will be good if they can fix all the issues, I would like to run the player again. At 07:21 p.m. 7/12/2008, you wrote: Yeah, I know, they going to be coming out with a big release around Christmas. Also if you are running XP make sure your speaker setting is set to 2.1 not on surround sound that will cause problems as well. yeah that will be cool. night of parasite is a good game for an rpg I like to think it has fps and if elements in it.
