Hi Hayri, No, that is not correct. Only the first level is complete. We still need to complete the final 9 levels of the game as well as hopefully get the engine working correctly with SDL. Re: [Audyssey] possibly broadcasting a clip of MOTA on the BBC
Hey Tom, Short notice I know but it looks like I'm demoing games for Mani and the BBC feature later on today after all, they delayed the feature by a week because they were struggling to find people who interviewed and gamed well. I've got public beta 2 installed here of MOTA and was planning to talk about it and show it off a bit. If there's anything significant been updated since that you'd want shown, can you send me over a copy? Cheers, sorry about the short notice, it's happening in about 3 hours time! Unfortunately mine and Mani's schedules totally clash and he's only got a day left to get the feature done, so it doesn't look like I'll be demoing. Still looking fairly likely we can fit in a phone interview though so I'll be sure to plug mota, it's the perfect thing to talk about seeing as beta 2 will have dropped the day before the show goes out, it makes people aware that the accessible scene has a bit of hype and excitement approaching a release of a title. Hi Scott, At the present moment Beta 3 is pretty much Beta 2 with a few miner changes. Re: [Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors
Hi, Sure I can do that. I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10 on my computer so will need to install scare, frob, frotz, etc but that shouldn't take long. I'll let you know. Just curious, but why aren't you running the Gnome desktop? These days the recent versions of Gnome and Orca work quite well together. Well enough that I hardly ever need to use the shell except for a few things such as gcc, gmcs, apt-get, and a few other command line tools/compilers. Otherwise I am a Gnome user all the way. In fact, the Linux port of Mysteries of the Ancients I am working on requires a fully operational version of X-Windows, a recent copy of the Gnome desktop, Orca, and the gtk-sharp compatibility libraries as well. So as a software developer targeting the Gnome desktop, which I believe is the future of Linux access, I'm interested in why there is a prevailing number of Linux users that are still using speakup and other shell based programs instead of the Gnome desktop environment with Orca. Re: [Audyssey] Bug in MOTA.
Yeah, I've seen something like this before, sometimes your weapons just outright stop working on enemies and you have to run in the opposite direction and turn back around to be able to do damage. Also, any chance the attacks could have some kind of connection sound and panning, so crouching would be a bit easier and make more sense? At the moment it just sounds odd, you hear the attack go off, then the character just randomly yells out, haha. Its kind of amusing, but makes getting into any kind of rhythm a bit tough. Also every once in a while crouching seems to disable itself, if you hold it down you'll crouch a bunch in rapid succession, but if you try to time it, sometimes crouch just outright doesn't work and you end up taking a hit before you can crouch again. -- From: Phil Vlasak p...@pcsgames.net Sent: Friday, March 06, 2009 6:20 AM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Bug in MOTA. Hi, Exactly what Phil said. When you reach the top of the staircase, the enemy is right there like right next to you. You lose quite a bit of health no matter what, and there's no way to shoot it unless you turn around, walk a few steps, and then turn back around and fire at it. All the while it's attacking you. Re: [Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors
Hi, For ZMachine games, I use an interpreter called Filfre. While you have to use your screen reader's review cursor, such as the JAWS cursor, to read the text, it works considerably better than Winfrotz. I used to use the TTS version of that program, but after trying Filfre, I immediately removed it. I don't think Filfre has SAPI5 capabilities, but I don't mind using the JAWS cursor anyway. I also use the HTML TADS Player's kit for TADS games, and the ADRIFT interpreters for those games, but after reading about SCARE I'm going to try the Windows version and see how well it works. Re: [Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors
I've tried to use Frotz with gnome and orca under linux. THe only problem is the entire screen changes or refreshes so that after a command I hear the entire screen read back to me, including past moves and score. There's probably some config option nestled deep within the .frotzrc which I haven't investigated. THe man page didn't hint at any which sounded appropriate... maybe it's a color thing. Adventure (sudo apt-get install bsdgames on ubuntu) works fine and is a lot of fun. Gnome works decently but it's significantly slower than the shell even with Orca. to be fair, my netbook isn't very powerful, and gnome+orca runs a lot faster on my other laptop. Emacspeak sounds attractive because it's an audio desktop specifically talored for the blind, but a lackluster web browser (according to the author - unless the firefox interface works now) and the fact that I haven't got it running yet means I'm still with Gnome. Re: [Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors
Hi Tom, I suppose the best reason I can give for not switching to Gnome is that I find the command line quite powerful enough. I have Emacspeak installed on this machine, which lets me send email, read Usenet news, etc. Speakup lets me play all the linux compatible games I want. edbrowse and Emacs/w3 provide web browsers, LaTeX is my word/math processor. All this being the case, I might be persuaded to install Gnome over here if MOTA came out for it. This is a Slackware system, which doesn't make Gnome easily available by default, but I can get it if I want it. Hope this explaination makes sense. you have to jump 1 then walk 4 steps and jump another, you seem to be only to jump one step. I see why this is done later in the level there is a chasm well 2 of them with keys betwene so makes sence, and also to be realistic, in real life could you honestly be able to jump over something like 8 steps wide maybe 9? Re: [Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors
well tom I still like the shell then load extra stuff on it. my distros I like are the grml, and arch-linux, these are just straight out shells. you install extra stuff on those if you wish. that way you probably can start with just shell and not worry about things. Though, for now at least windows xp is my os. At 02:18 a.m. 7/03/2009, you wrote: Hi, Sure I can do that. Re: [Audyssey] Bug in MOTA.
well in cases like ladders and such I find it easier to jump over a monster to kill it especially when I need to switch guns although I try to not do that like running out of amo. however I can't always do this. YOu can never kill a monster if its right there in front of you, got to be carefull about range, to close and you can't get it but sometimes you can. you also earn what weapon can nock out the most monsters. In general your pistol can knock out most things, but more powerfull guns, like the shotgun can destroy monsters at longer range. your arrows can get rid of bosses quickly, and the sword is good at close range with just about anything. your knife is useless but usefull if you don't have anything else. Re: [Audyssey] a moo question
Hi, I am assuming you mean you just want a room. Sorry. This isn't possible. Well maybe it's technically possible, but you'd have no MOO. Each of those objects, before #62 (and after it), contains a generic of something, vital to the game. #62, is a child of #3, a generic room. Without #3, you can't have #62. You might want to check out minimal.db. It's a database with nothing more then you absolutely need! Re: [Audyssey] Bug in MOTA.
Hi Phil, You just braught up a very good point. A lot of people still are not aware that all weapons have a minimum and maximum range. If someone is trying to kill a monster up too close then obviously the weapon won't work. Diddo if the monster is out of range. MOTA is not a simple game by any means. Anyway, I'm wondering if Ryan's problem with the random monster in room 12 is simply not being prepared for the attack? If it happens to be near the staircase then the gamer in question has to act pretty quick to get out of the way and not too close to the monster to get in some stabs, shots, whatever. It is certainly tricky at times. Phil Vlasak wrote: Hi Thomas, I had this happen with a Harpy in room 12 and it sounds like the enemy was 0 distance away. Re: [Audyssey] Bug in MOTA.
Hi, As I just mentioned in the previous post there are two reasons why a weapon might not be doing any damage. First, you are too close. If you are too close you can't correctly aim, swing your sword, etc because of lack of room to maneuver in. Second, the enemy is out of range. In that case you flat out miss because it is too far away to hit. As far as your panning suggestion can you explain further? I'm afraid I'm not sure exactly what you are suggesting/asking. As for ducking I know it is fairly messed up. I've tried, but can't exactly get it right. If I don't resolve it soon I'm strongly considering just scrapping the duck command altogether. That's how annoyed I am with it right now. Grin. Shadow Dragon wrote: Yeah, I've seen something like this before, sometimes your weapons just outright stop working on enemies and you have to run in the opposite direction and turn back around to be able to do damage. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Prince of Persia is out of the league accessability wise, but if you can get someone to help you the game is definitely worth a runthrough. Other games aside from the ones I mentioned are: Soul Calibur 2 Street Fighter Alpha Anthology King of Fighters 2006 Fight Knight Round 3 Mortal Kombat: Deception That's all the games that I can think of that you can probably still find today. all my ps2 games are older classics like Dead or Alive 2 which probably wouldn't be in production anymore. - Original Message - From: Ron Schamerhorn blindwon...@cogeco.ca To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, March 06, 2009 7:21 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] recommendations Hi to all Thanks for the replies. Out of the games that I borrowed there's I'd think only a couple that are playable. Prince of Pursia 2 Warrior Within, and Smackdown 2007. A few other titles sounded good such as the Da Vincci Code and CSI but I'd imagine they wouldn't work. Thanks for the suggestions and by all means keep them coming! I'm not sure what games my nephew has but I'm getting the lot. I'm hoping that between talking here and the gamefaq.com will help me figure everything out that I'll need to.
