Hi, Actually, the randomization is low. Most times you'll encounter the same monsters on exactly the same locations. If you havn't bothered with rpgs or any strat games like time of conflict then this is the first game you need to play. after that you need to do a few games on soundrts. after that do the same on entombed. and then you should be fairly well skilled I still like it just to say if I can still get round, its nothing special but its good if you really want to be manual about things or you don't want to use headphones. Re: [Audyssey] Genesis Engine was Retro Gaming
Hi Thomas, Agreed 100 %. We had a discussion on the private beta team whether or not we should have high level wizards for making different styles of games but it was a unanimous no in the end as far as I remember. And as for whether programming knowledge is necessary... I've been asked the same question more times than I can count, and the short answer I give is that yes you do need to have an idea of how scripting works, which is like programming but 10 times easier. The fact of the matter is that a game is a program like any other, and so one cannot make a game without programming. Then how easy or difficult the programming is, that's a science in itself. Smile. I can only try to make it as simple and user friendly as possible, which I'm hoping to achieve not only by having an extensive text documentation but also by providing it in a readily accessible audio format. Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, March 14, 2010 9:18 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Genesis Engine was Retro Gaming Hi Philip, Exactly my point. In a sense the AGM is too simplistic a game development tool because it is extremely limited in what you can actually create with it. You are not able to modify the enemy AI or use any kind of if type conditional statements to change the behavior of any game elements. This is a huge drawback as you know conditional statements are absolutely essentual for creating games where there are several random variables involved. The point and click game development tools don't give you that kind of control over the games creation and behavior. Which was one of the reasons it failed to impress game developers such as me. I understand some users desire to have a simple point and click all in one game development tool, but such a thing isn't realistically feasable if we want the developer to be able to create new and unique types of games. I think what you are doing with BGT is really the best compromise possible. You have a scripting language with special modules/add ons that helps simplifies the process of game development while not giving up any features in the process. I think in the end I'll probably end up doing the same thing with Genesis as well. There really isn't any better way to do it. I don't know about you, but ever since I mentioned I was working on the Genesis Engine I often get asked if he/she will have to know any programming to use it. Like you if I go with a scripting language for scripting the engine the end user wouldn't necessarily have to know how to program to use it per say, but they would have to learn how to use the scripting language which some might find a little daunting. That may put people off from buying it as they wouldn't be able to pick it up, point and click a couple of times, and have a new game. It still may require some scripting by hand to create a game which is a big turn off for the common computer user, but is necessary to have a fully featured game engine. Cheers! On 3/14/10, Philip Bennefall wrote: Hi Thomas, A good summary, in my opinion. The problem I have with a, shall we call it clicky-pointy tool is that it's ridiculously limited. Somebody asked on the audio game maker forum how easy it would be to make a sports game (I think it was basketball or socker or something). The response was, the engine doesn't support making a ball at this stage... I'll say no more. The way I'm doing it in Bgt, as I mentioned previously, is to build a powerful base that is capable of making pretty much anything. I still have to add a few things such as file IO, some processor demanding AI that can't be done so well through the script, parsing directory trees, encryption and decryption of files and strings etc, 3d vectors and advanced math, eventually networking and so forth. Though over-all, the core of the engine will stay unchanged and the only thing that will be added is extra modules. These, the script writer can simply include and use as though they were functions and classes that they had written themselves; #include, in other words. This will enable me to go as high level as I could possibly wish, even to the point of providing almost finished games where all you need to do is make a few tweaks to variables and supply sounds. This, however, would not be a good foundation for a core which is what the audio game maker tried to do. In short, I'm trying to provide the best of both worlds; extreme simplisity if you want it, and complete control once you've mastered the language operation enough. well standard music. its a really basic rpg. its random and has no real replay value you need to calculate in your head your level of defence and attack though. Its a bit out ballanced at the end. I'd still use it as a basic rpg trainer. Hi, This is my final word on this subject before I close the topic down. Regardless if I use the word crap or not that has absolutely no baring on this subject. In your opinion crap is worse than the h word. I disagree with you. In the end we will have to agree to disagree. What I can say one word is on the ban list and the other is not. I'll talk to my fellow moderators, see what they think, but after that the decision is final one way or the other. Re: [Audyssey] expletives
Hi Darren, Keep in mind that when we wrote the guidelines for this list all three of us Raul, Kevin, and I sat down and drafted the rules and approved them. To my knowledge nobody objected to the word crap so it was never added to the ban list. So if a moderator uses it he/she is well with in the guidelines to do so. If you think we are setting a double standard perhaps you should try running the list from now on. I hope you can run it as well as you can sit there and run your mouth, and dictate to us how to run the list. If you think the rules are so unfair I'd like a copy of your revisions and changes to the list guidelines by morning. I'll be sure Kevin and Raul get a copy so we can decide to adopt them or not. Frankly I am getting pretty sick and tired of people thinking they have the right to run right over the moderators on this list, and have the right to say and do whatever they feel like. Re: [Audyssey] expletives
I should also point out there is also a place in thailand called h'llfire pass. At 10:36 PM 14/03/2010, you wrote: Well I don't agree with swaring in a public place, I think there's better ways to articulate what you're saying. This list is a public place at least I consider it to be. The problem I have is the justification of what is and what isn't considered to be swaring. As has already been pointed out, in the game desert strike there are such things as hellfire missiles. But more to the point, there needs to be a definite defined definition of what is and what isn't considered to be swaring. I'm sorry but I don't think hell is considered to be that. I find it personally amusing that some people think it is. The only logical reason for that is because of religious influence. If that is so, well not everybody on this list is religious. Now if we took every single religion into account on this list and in developing games, we'd end up with a game where by you couldn't say hell, couldn't have adult themes in games and you couldn't eat bacon products. So a degree of logic has to be used here. Whilst this is an international list and so it should be thought of as such, equally too many people these days are oh so happy to take offence and am sorry but I don't give credit to those people. In that sense I do absolutely say grow up and get a life. Equally there is no need for swaring in a public place. I certainly don't do it. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of william lomas Sent: 14 March 2010 11:24 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] expletives who actually cares, it childish, grow up? Re: [Audyssey] Genesis Engine was Retro Gaming
Hi Philip, Exactly my point. Cheers! Good morning all, I woke up this morning to a inbox full of emails discussing the difference between two words, I have one question what does this have to do with gaming? So I feel that if this is the discussion you all need to have it should be on another list, and as far as this list the moderators make the rules and if you don't like them unsubscribe from the list so that those of us who want to discuss and read emails about games can continue to do this. [Audyssey] the last crusade
Hi what is that last crusade gamme about? Josh Kennedy jkenn...@gmail.com my blog is at http://jkenn337.klangoblog.net (updated frequently). Tired of Microsoft Windows and paying thousands for screen-readers? try out NVDA, get a mac--, nvda--for Windows, or try out and switch to grml, Ubuntu, Vinux, or knoppix-adriane Linux desktops. Knoppix ubuntu and vinux-cli-max are the most accessible for beginners. also try vinux-gui and encourage those at www.cherrypal.com to use windows-xp and nvda knoppix-adriane Vinux-cli-max or grml so all blind people can have an accessible computer. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi, If you have a drop boxaccount, just copythe folder and paste it into the public folder (Under My Documents\My Drop Box\Public) then copy the public link by 1. Select thefile and press applications. 2. Select the drop box sub menu and open it. 3. Choose copy public link. Note that it will take awhile to upload. Another thing, I did not see a readme file in the zip file. Re: [Audyssey] Genesis Engine was Retro Gaming
Hi Hayden, The engine is primarily intended for audio game development. Having said that, however, many functions found in games are also found in other types of programs so it is not at all impossible that one could use the engine to write something other than a game. I stil however see no need to pander to this sort of thing when the majority of people on the street wouold find it acceptable. I must say that on the audiogames.net forum, while language filters have been set for many words (including the F word), there was a moderator discussion about the word in question a couple of years ago, and it was decided to remove it from the swearing filter, so it now writes as it should. there have been no complaints whatsoever, and sinse it's a word I myself use (I've possibly used it on this list), people have been much more comfortable allowing it. pluss of course, it is also a word which may come up in conversationn on other topics rather than as an expletive, in fact the discussion about removing it from the swearing filters was prompted by discussion of the game desert strike, and it's use of h/llfire missiles as a weapon. thus, while I would certainly agree on keeping profanity down, I do think there is a reasonable line. Obviously, sinse yo moderate this list and not me, such a decision is yours to make and I'll be glad to abide by it, however, i have to confess I don't agree that the H word should in deed be banned simply because some people find it offensive, would you considder banning the word "belly?" as well? Re: [Audyssey] expletives
Well I don't agree with swaring in a public place, I think there's better ways to articulate what you're saying. Re: [Audyssey] Moderator Warning was your the best developer Jason!
Lol thomas it may be offencive for those who wish to live a sheltered life but the real world isn't like that. Sorry but this is just stupid. If you can use words like crap and then come out with this then that's just pothetic. Sorry but it is. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: 14 March 2010 04:08 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Moderator Warning was your the best developer Jason! Hi, While I might agree with you personally the fact of the matter is that there are some who would find that word offensive. That's why one of the list rules is to refrane from using cuss words that many people find offensive. We could debate what is and is not bad language, but generally most of us already know what words are acceptable in public forums and which are not. Generally the h word is considered offensive so that is why I issued the moderator warning. So what about the word crap I've seen thomas use it on numerous times recently. Sorry but that's worse -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Anne Walker Sent: 13 March 2010 23:57 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Moderator Warning was your the best developer Jason! Hello Muhammed, Stephen, and Hayden Personally, I agree with Thomas 100%. This list is used by children and adults alike and there is no need to swear on it. Besides - the guidelines firmly state that there is to be no swearing and if he considers that word a swear word then there isn't much you or I or anyone can say about it. I would suggest that if you do not agree then maybe you should start your own game talk list and make your own rules/guidelines then you would not have to worry about such things. I personally find no real NEED to swear while talking about these games on this list. Yup have to say I think when you see words like crap used on this list it makes messages like this seem laughable. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Bryan Peterson Sent: 13 March 2010 20:42 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Moderator Warning was your the best developer Jason!
