Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games on PC
Hi Ken, Well, that is really part of the problem. Most of the big name titles are being produced specifically for game consoles like the Wii, Xbox, Play Station, etc. Mainstream game developers aren't producing games for the PC like they were in the 1990's. Instead there is a big move to target all the major game consoles, and the PC has all been forgotten. Oh, there are plenty of small game studios still producing games for the PC, mainly because they don't have the money to target the game consoles, but by and large if you go to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc you'll find more games for the consoles than for the PC. That obviously narrows the list of games we can choose from. I often download game demos to my PC, try them out, but I haven't found many that are very accessible. Although I hope someone has some good suggestions as I'd like to find more accessible PC games too. Cheers! Starcraft, Call of Duty and left 4 dead just to name a few. But I don't think we're going to find many accessible games on the pc. lol. Sad truth of it, I'm afraid... as you're right, the majority of the games are for consoles.. and the pc games nowadays are more often than not just ports. At 05:58 AM 12/02/2011, you wrote: Hi Ken, Well, that is really part of the problem. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games on PC
It seems from what I've seen the pc games are separated into two catagories, the big games usually with user interaction like the mmorps and the modable fps games where people create their own levels, and the indi studios who produce small games, people like niels bauer and 7-128. As I've said in my general experience, Indi developers are a reasonable bunch and are more often than not happy to make access tweaks, plusss their is always the chance their games will run with a screen reader anyway, or that you can use a screen reader to eddit certain properties of the game. While I do admit real time games for the pc aren't really accessible to totally blind gamers (though I have had quite a bit of success in the low vision field, had success with one puzle game just today in fact), I am fairly certain this will slowly change over time, hence the need for a site like http://www.blindcomputergames.com/ Beware the Grue! [Audyssey] difficulty of the megaman series
To dark... I know you said the Megaman series would be hard to play but I'm curious to know why. Is it the platforming elements? Or is it more of the fact that there isn't sufficient audio feedback for totals to be able to tell what is happening? I'm just curious to know... because if the obstacles aren't too great, I might considering giving it a try... even if it does mean learning it step by step. lol. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] difficulty of the megaman series
The answer is both. One thing which is probably difficult for people who've never played a graphical 2d platformer to understand, is that the game mechanics and amount of vertical movement are extremely! large, far larger than even mota. you couldn't for instance say, learn to walk forward x amount of steps and then jump, because firstly your jump varies according to how long you hold the button, and secondly there is no guarantee that you'd actually be jumping towards a ledge which is opposite you. You might jump towards a ledge which is below you, or above, or even you might be going for a ledge which is directly above your head requiring you to jump out, then across then back up (turrican has many of these). Then, bare in mind that it's not just a question of static ledges. Some platforms move, others (like the famous mega man disappearing blocks), vanish and reappear, others have spikes on them which will instantly kill you meaning you need to jump very carefuly, others move according to your actions so for instance when you jump they'll move aside. Then, there are enemies. Getting hit knocks you back, so often you need to be quite careful about dealing with enemies before you jump, or waiting for enemies to get in range of your shots before you fire, or waiting to dodge enemy shots in the air, you might even need to jump over enemy fire too. Then there is the question that different weapons and collectable function differently, and may help you in certain situations, like having a controllable jet sled to fly on for a limited time, or having a weapon which lets you freeze enemies in place to use as platforms. Then there are the bosses, who's movement patterns, us of weapons and even arenas can be extremely! distinct, though in mega man 1-6 their movements and attacks were relatively simple (they tended to just run around the arena chucking their weapon at you). and all I've said covers only nes mega man, getting into the later x or zero games where you can do things like kick up walls and hang off them, or use weapons or armours to propel yourself around (with the air dash for instance). I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think you'd deffinately need some sited assistance in adition to a faq, because everything in the games are so fluid, require distinct reflexes and understanding of mechanics, and because even though there are some very well written and complete faqs for the series, they can only explain so much. If you can get somebody to watch the screen, and explain things to you, you might have some success with some of the nes games, but it'd take quite a bit of work, and probably wouldn't be worth it for the time you'd spend, sinse afterall, even fully sited people need to practice extensively and spend a good time working on mega man games in order to get anywhere at all. Re: [Audyssey] difficulty of the megaman series
That's fair enough. And I do know of all of those concepts, since although I haven't played that many platformers, I've played enough of them. Though I will say that boss encounters aren't the biggest problems.. I've played games with distinct boss encoutnters. Heck, pretty much every fighting game has different aspects to each character if you look at it that way. lol. At 12:07 PM 12/02/2011, you wrote: The answer is both. Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games on PC
Hi, Not to get too technical, but I believe the majority of PC games are third-person shooters rather than first-person shooters. At least a lot of the PC games I own are. The difference is in a third-person action/adventure like Tomb Raider you can actually see the main character like Lara Croft on the screen. In first-person shooters you can't actually see the main character and there is just an arm out there with a gun, sword, or something which kind of looks funky to me. Anyway that is the ssential difference between first-person and third-person style games. That's a fair point. But all the ones I know of are first person. Call of Duty, Left 4 dead, Counterstrike, Defend of the Ancients, from what I know are all first-person. I could be confused though. Re: [Audyssey] difficulty of the megaman series
No no, this isn't discouraging, no worries about that. As a matter of fact... I like having a discussion like this, as it fasinates me. I know all these concepts, but it's good to know what problems it could cause me if I did try to play it. Though I guess I should've known what you meant about bosses being different. What I meant was that although they are different, it's a question of knowing their patterns and trying to adapt to them.. that was what I meant when I said they had similarities with every fight in a fighting game. But you're right. Aside from that, bosses in platformers are drastically different. Back to the themes though... I don't know whether you heard the one that was a bit more of a techno dance remix... not the one from Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, the remixer put sounds and voices from the games in rhythm with the music.. I liked that part. lol. At 01:43 PM 12/02/2011, you wrote: I didn't mean bosses were specifically a problem clemment, but bosses in platform games are nothing like ones in fighting games. For one thing, the arena your in plays a massive part, indeed for many bosses which tower over you it's getting yourself in a position where their weekspot is in range of your weapons that is half the problem, many bosses require you to avoid hazards in the room, use moving platforms, or even jump on their own projectiles just to get a hit on them, and that possibly only at very specific times. Then, where as in a fighting game you always know that an enemy's attacks are coming from them specifically, with many of the mega man bosses, attacks can come from literally direction. Overdrive ostridge for instance in mega man x 2 had an attack where he caused a rain of projectiles to come down from the air right across the arena. You couldn't escpae this, the only way to get out of it is to stand betwene two of them, and sinse where they're launched depends upon your injitial position this can be complex. Also bare in mind, while! this was going on, ostridge was stil firing his standard shots at you, or attempting to hit you either by charging at you (which you needed to jump), skip charging at you which you needed to attempt to run under, or vanishing and then landing on you which rrequired you to run away at the last moment. Combine this with the fact that you fought ostridge in an area of overlapping sand comprising hill valley, hill valley, you frequently had to run to different points to escape his charges, for instance to run undernieth his high charge you needed to be in a valley, where as to jump is ground charge you were better on a hill. Also, audio kews wise, both charges had the same sfx, --- and bare in mind that in the mega man games as in most platformers, if you even touch a boss your damaged (it was quite possible to run into ostridge accidently when jumping his projectiles if your too close). Then, when you get to the zero series, bosses get truly! insane. I'm not trying to be discouraging, just realistic. If you had someone there to describe where you were, rough arena layout and what was happening, you may be able to get through some of the game, but it would take a lot of description and considderable practice. I played some of the Megaman x series. Never much, just a little... but my favorite theme and character has always been zero. Here are a few remixes of his x2 theme, that I can't get enough of. For anyone who played the old Street Fighter games, here's a cover of Ken's theme that I played just now. My hands aren't warmed up and I'm not as good at playing as I'd like to be, but I think this was okay, for the most part. I did three playthroughs of it in a row... first and third are both lead... third with me improvising, which failed horribly. lol. Second one was purely rhythm. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/ssf2%20turbo%20-%20ken%27s%20theme%20cover.mp3 The track I'm playing along to is the official track from the HD remix of the game for the ps3 and xbox360. I didn't have a backing track, so I just turned it down and used my stereo mix to record it. Hi. Well I just ran through the game today. Good, addictive as always. The booster really was cool but I was never able to maintain it for long and the chicken got me a bunch of times my score was 78 but still a good time killer. This is fine if I actually had time to kill which I don't but i tried it once and its really cool. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] difficulty of the megaman series
well the more remixes the better. Thanks to dark and you I have a large collection and I know a few other stations on the net and a few mates will like this stuff. I wander what will it be like if I play some mota to some of this instead of the background or sod. At 10:53 a.m. 13/02/2011, you wrote: No no, this isn't discouraging, no worries about that. If you had someone there to describe where you were, rough arena layout and what was happening, you may be able to get through some of the game, but it would take a lot of description and considderable practice. just do a level 1 attack. that helps with the recovery frames. distance is also a determining factor. if you're too far away and try to FA, you'll get spammed even worse since they can toss more projectiles at you while you're recovering. however if you cover up some distance during initial volley, you'll have a better chance to retaliate. and yeah, gouken is definitely tricky. specially if you get hit with fully charged fireballs. not fun as you most likely found out lol - Original Message - From: Clement Chou chou.clem...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2011 5:23 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] more SF action I know about focusses... but the problem with them is right after you absorb one, they can hit you with another. I got past him twice. The last two I just wasn't as aware as my situation and lost track. lol. And the problem with defend with an FA is the fact that even with a level one... there's still a hit that comes out. The only way to cancel it is to FADC, and while that works well, Gouken especially can do his senku goshoha and dash across the screen to palm you. My hands aren't warmed up and I'm not as good at playing as I'd like to be, but I think this was okay, for the most part. I did three playthroughs of it in a row... first and third are both lead... third with me improvising, which failed horribly. lol. Re: [Audyssey] Daytona
Sorry it took me so long to respond Ken, I didn't notice your post. I am using VB6 to write the Daytona games, yes. The first step is to store the mouse coordinates yourself rather than just letting the mouse move freely, otherwise you will get undesirable results as the cursor hits the edges of the screen and stops. There are a few ways, of course, but for me I use 3 variables to store directions. As the mouse moves, calculate the angle and categorize it as being one of 8 possible directions, North, South, East, West, and the 4 diagonals. As the direction changes, one of the variables strings together every N,S,E,W direction. One variable strings together each diagonal direction, and finally the third variable holds them all. I personally found it easier to figure out the shapes when I split up the changes in this way. Now, based on direction changes you can know what shape they drew. As you might already see, this method allows you to scale the shapes but it also isn't specific enough to handle true letters. For true letter shapes that have very specific relative shapes to them, I am using a different method for Daytona 2. It would take longer to explain but I had to take relative position and distances into account for Daytona 2 since that game will use the alphabet and should double as an educational tool in addition to being a fun game. --- On Fri, 2/11/11, Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com wrote: From: Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Daytona To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Date: Friday, February 11, 2011, 8:20 AM Hey, are you writing these programs in vb6? Re: [Audyssey] more SF action
Juri is not one of my favorites... not that that person knew what he was doing. He used a lot of the same moves and I only got caught because I kept falling for the bait rather than trying different maneuvers. As for Gouken... well, yeah. Definitely wasn't my day. I did like the two wins I pulled off though... good timing on my part if I do say so myself. At 08:54 PM 12/02/2011, you wrote: Hi Clement, Yeah, definitely wasn't your day. From the sound of the recording Juri really tore you up and ripped you anew one. Your match with Gouken wasn't too bad, you held your own for quite a while, but towards the end he just started blasting you. that's alright. Next time beat the crap out of both of them. Grin. Juri Wasn't my best one ever... made a lot of stupid mistakes. Last finish of the match... I ran right into her ultra move, and my health was already delicate at that point. Not my best match of the night. 2. Guy Vs. Gouken A bit better... guy's elbow drop is good for getting past projectiles. In this match, supers and ultras made the diference. I scraped through two wins with one ultra and super finish, and the Gouken-player caught me with his ultra twice... and put me behind in health again. All in all, better than the Juri match... but could've still been a lot better. Damn me and getting too excited to think properly. But it helps to be more awake and alert... usually I can strategize better. lol. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/SSFIV%20online%20two%20matches.mp3 Discuss. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
