Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi. The big thing I like better about IE9 over 8 is that it handles downloading a lot better. Starting a download is simpler and you don't have those annoying things where you have to tell it that yes you want to download the file, then reload the page and hit the download link again just to get it to start the download. You just hit enter on the link, then either hit ctrl+j after you hear the notification bar sound to go to the download manager where you can choose what to do with the download or you could just press alt+s to save or alt+r to run. Like when Jeremy releases a new version of swamp I just press enter on the link in the email. IE9 opens and asks me in the information bar, rather than in a pop up dialogue like we're used to, what I want to do. I know of that because of the information bar sound, so I just hit alt+s. If I want to watch what the download is doing, I can hit ctrl+j to open up the download manager similar to Firefox. I can arrow up and down the list of downloads, and when I land on one that's in progress, for some computers jaws actually will read it every now and then when the numbers change, and for others it won't. I haven't figured out what makes the difference but when it does it, it reminds me of Voiceover's interaction with the download manager of Saphari on the mac. So anyway when the download finished, I should be aware of that if I hear the sound that indicates as much, even if I went off reading emails or something instead of watching the numbers. So I can go to the start menu and type dow, short for downloads of course, into the search box and arrow down till I hear downloads. I hit enter there and that opens my user account's downloads folder and, because I have set the sort order to date modified rather than by name, do to the fact that I also have it set to descending sort order, the just downloaded file is at the top of the list, the first item I land on. Now I really like how easy that is. I tried chrome, but I can't find a way to turn off the loading of pictures. So far it looks to me like it's actually pretty darn simplified and non configurable. I must be missing something. I went to options but there's nothing like that in there, nor a way to make it play sounds for page loads and other events like we're used to IE doing. I turn off images because since I can't see them there's absolutely no point what so ever in waiting those extra seconds for them to load. Turning them off results in very noticeable improvements as far as page load time goes. I do miss the status bar though. I managed to turn it on, on my Umid MBook SE, but I don't remember how I did it. Besides, even when on, I don't think it shows the same information as it did in IE8, you know, waiding for page... etc. You know, even though I did mention downloading a game here, I know we're off topic. But you have to admit, when this list gets one of it's frequent off topic threads going, it's usually something good. Really though, it's a pretty in the air question, since there are plenty of games that are played in, and that might be affected by the differences of browsers. Also, regarding the recent discussion of Jim's hardware, that's definitely on topic since gaming is of course affected by what kind of hardware you try to run it on. Speaking of which, my Umid MBook SE turned out to be very amusing as far as a gaming computer goes. At first, it was nasty trying to play swamp until some people on here pointed out that maybe I had graphics mode turned on. I did, even though I can't see at all, no idea how it got turned on. So I turned it off and it worked fine after that. Well sort of. The touch pad is in the lid, just to the right of the screen. You operate it with your thumb, unless you really want to stick your pointer finger out and swipe at it that is. But it's a touch pad, not a trackball or even one of those little rubbery things you slide your finger on like a lot of linovo computers have that people are so happy with because they hate the way touch pads always jump all over the place when they're not trying to use them. Touch pads generally use heat to figure out where you're touching them, and I don't think the one on the Umid MBook SE is an exception. The problem is, your thumb takes up the whole thing. This means it has a hard time perceiving movements of your thumb since it can't really sense heat moving around on it given of course as I said your finger's heat takes up the whole thing anyway. The best way to get it to move around is to kind of swipe at it without actually touching it, about a millimeter away or so. It's funny because if you try touching it, sliding right, then lift your thumb and move back to the left, press your thumb down on it and swipe right again, trying to turn to the right, you actually turn left or just kind of dance around and don't get very far. There are two buttons on the left side of t

Hi Thomas, The dealer having set rules for when to hit or stay was why I was confused when you said The other difference is from what I've seen so far Alantic City Blackjack just seems to have a better A.I. Its nothing specific I can put my fingure on, but the A.I. tends to know when its a good time to hit, stay, or double which I like. I like your Blackjack game too, but I seem to win more than I lose and I've seen the computer player make several bad calls during the course of a game. As I said its not anything specific I can put my finger on, but it just seems to happen more often than Atlantic City Blackjack. Shaun, I.E. 9 can easily be disabled by unchecking it in optional updates under Windows 7. However, given the fact that most applications use ribbons, most browsers have multitabbed browsing, browsers have a separate download manager window, etc most of the features in I.E. 9 you'll probably want anyway or will have to get use to using eventually. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Dark, This is really way off topic for the list so I'll consider this my last message on the subject. However, there are certainlyh advantages to having multiple tabs open in a single browser window. Especially, if you are sighted which is the target market the new browsers are designed for in the first place. If you are perhaps shopping for a certain Christmas present you can compare prices with other websites simply by opening wal-mart.com, amazon.com, overstock.com, etc all in the same window and see all of the prices and features on screen at once. You can bring the one you want to look at more closely to the foreground, but if you can see it having all of that information right there on the screen is easier than trying to open every one of those websites in separate windows. I know when I was looking for laptops there were several I was considering buying. The easiest way to narrow it down was to open each page in its own tab and quickly toggle through the tabs to compare information by looking at them side by side so to speak. I think it was easier than having say 10 windows open and having to hunt around for the one I wanted when all I had to do is control+tab or control+shift+tab to the tab I wanted to view. In short, multitab browsing, the tool bars, etc is like anything else in life. Its there if you want it, if you like the feature, and if not you don't have to use it. It comes down to personal choice. Cheers! Funnily enough, I know lots of people with quite normal sight who dislike ribbon controls. Microsoft really made an error there i think, but i doubt it'll be corrected in windows 8. Beware the grue! I have turned off the toolbars, and multitab brousing for the most part, but find that since using nvda for full reader I have seldomly had to interact with toolbars, the same with ie9. My only issue is that at least in nvda progress bars don't speak and the download ariea is a bit strange. But oh well. I dislike multi tab brousing because when I've got three or four pages open at a time, I like to just flick instantly betwene them and have one around at once, especially on occasions when I've got three or four things open as when I'm playing Core exiles with the main game window, galaxy plotter and Ce db site all! open at once, or when I'm coppying information from one page to go on an audiogames.net entry. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
well I have the latest nvda. Ie9 is faster and has standards complience. Nvda can not read progress bars though which is a pain, i don't think there is any way to stop win7 updating to ie9 or at least I have not found a way to hide it. However, it does have some features which though annoying I do like. Everything including info bars etc is on the toolbar, its download manager is a bit strange, but you can view your downloads in a new window and thats ok, The new ribbon is quite a thing to get used to, but the normal text menu just like the dos command line before it is passed its used by date. So eventually we will have to start using it. Eventually you should be able to see what shortcut does what, etc. I fortunately still have winxp, though if I switch to 7 it will be ie9 unless ofcause I can somehow stop it doing that. win8 will be fully ribbonised though. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Jim, Well, the processor speed of your computers is fast enough to run Win 7, but you don't have enough memory on either one. Windows 7 requires a bare minimum of 1GB of ram for the operating system and at least 2 GB or more if you want to run Microsoft Office, Jaws, Internet Explorer, etc. Anyway, NVDA comes with a free synth called ESpeak. Like you said it sounds robotic, reminds me of one of the older hardware synths, but there are other options. I myself use Sapi 5 voices like AT&T Crystal, AT&T Mike, or the Cepstral voices since they are much more human sounding than ESpeak. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Out of interest tom is there any bennifit to the new Ui change? I'm using ie 8 currently because I've stil got windows xp, but frankly I really dislike multiple tabs, and prefer just to open a window that I can alt tab too sinse it's far more logical to me to do that. I've noticed a trend to have lots of crap on the screen, eg, toolbars, multiple tabs, different ree view etc, and I pretty much turn them all off, so for me using ie 8 is pretty much like using ie 6. I've even stil got office 2007, on one machine and 2003 on another, sinse frankly I saw no bennifit in the newer version. is this like the silly ribbon controls? Something we just have to get used to, but which is ultimately just a flashy ui change that is more of an annoyence than an upgrade? While I always try to keep up to date software where there is a manifest bennifit in new versions, such as Hal, winamp and 7zip, not to mention games, other stuff (especially from microsoft), I tend to be more suspect of. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Tom. That seems a very weerd approach, being as 50 percent of blind people are over retirement age, and as you pointed out the vast majority even of the ones under that are unemployed anyway. While Dolphin did fill educational contracts in this country, sinse those were largely based on personal choice or the choice of the L e a (local educational authority), they were largely filling contracts for individuals. That has also served them well, sinse obviously once a license is bought, people can maintain their software for a standard upgrade price, and don't need to buy another license, which is manageable even on incapacity bennifit and disability living allowence. Ironically enough with me, it was almost the opposite way around, sinse after I finished my degree, I assumed the disabled students allowence wouldn't cover more equipment so bought the upgrades for Hal myself, but then was told actually, as long as there was some factor in the new upgrade which would let me work on my course more effectively, i could have the Dsa pay for it, and sinse the majority of Hal upgrades included things like greater access to pdfs, ms office or the internet most have been covered by my dsa, - though by no means all. Then again I've always tried to be careful and only spend student allowence on things actually needed for work. That was why when i bought my rowland r09, I found the price of a mono voice recorder (I tink an olympus model), had the dsa pay that much, then paid the extra myself for the r09 sinse I obviously wanted it to do other things than just record my research assistant reading articals for me, she is also paid out of my dsa as well, and to preempt a question, no scanning wouldn't work. Firstly I never found a particularly efficient scanning program at the time (try combining articals on metaphysics with scan errors, it's not fun). Also, post graduate research in a humanities subject involves basically pulling hundreds of jernal articals off a shelf, or scanning a book very quickly and seeing if there is anything vaguely relevant. I cannot skim read, neither can a scanner, but by having an intelligent person who knows my work, can search on the library computer system and can in fact skim read for me and give me a general overview of an artical, I can sort of approximate the needed skill, which is why I pay for someone out of my dsa in this case, more to the point, someone who already has a masters herself. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Jim, Well, at the moment the bet limit is the only one I can think of. Its a lot more challenging when you can't bet more than $100 per hand because you can't just bet all of your chips at once and make a killing with one good hand. You have to work at the game for hours to make a decent proffit off of your initial $1000 stake. The other difference is from what I've seen so far Alantic City Blackjack just seems to have a better A.I. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Jim, Sure. Naturally Jaws 4.02 was written for the versions of the software you are running. You can't really upgrade anything on that computer without upgrading Jaws first since all of the newer software requires a newer screen reader too. For example, I assume you are running Internet Explorer 6. That's fine for Jaws 4.02, but anything newer would be absolutely inaccessible using that version of Jaws. Internet Explorer 9 has a totally new user interface, new features like multitab browsing, and it uses Microsoft UI Automation not Microsoft Active Accessibility. So unless you get a screen reader that can use Microsoft UI Automation most newer applications like Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft Office 2010, etc won't work at all with Jaws 4.02. Your cheapest solution would be to use NVDA or System Access which are cheaper than Jaws. Then, there is the hardware requirements. I don't know what you are running, but I imagine its pretty slow. My computer has a duel core 2 GHZ 64-bit processor with 3 GB of ram. A duel core processor runs faster than a single core so its probably rated in the 3 GB to 4 GB range. Since I'm running Windows 7 with the new 3d desktop etc I need that extra processor speed and memory. Cheers! Either way if you keep the SMA up to date you'll accumulate the cost of a new version of Jaws over several upgrades rather than one lump sum which I suppose is fair. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Shane, Yeah, that sounds about right. I think I was using Jaws 4.02 around 2001 or 2002. At least 10 years ago. However, I do understand because of the cost of access technology how something like that could get so far behind, and why someone might be reluctant to upgrade. That's exactly why I'm switching to NVDA because it saves me the cost of Jaws SMA upgrades per year. Of course, in Jim's case there is no easy way to upgrade from Jaws 4.02 to Jaws 13. As I recall after a person misses a certain number of upgrades or SMA licenses Freedom Scientific requires him/her to purchase a new copy of Jaws at the normal retail price, and of course they don't have an easy payment plan like GW Micro so the person has to come up with the full amount on their own. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Jim, True enough. Although, there are several accessible Blackjack games including yours they are all slightly different. What I like about this Atlantic City Blackjack is that it uses the same rules as Atlantic City casinos instead of Vegas casinos. Its also pretty challenging as well. For instance, I played a good game last night where I earned about $500 over the initial bank roll, lost it, and began going on a losing streak where the dealer knocked me down to $250. I slowly built myself back up to the initial $1000 stake before quitting the game. Point being, this version of Blackjack is definitely got good replay value, and I think I'm going to add some of the features of this Blackjack game to my own. Cheers! How strange. I'm using JAWS 13 on a machine using Windows XP Home, and it works OK. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hey, Thomas. I don't know if it is your screen reader or not because he tested the game on a 64 bit computer. That is the type of windows 7 that he has. A friend of mine has a 64 bit windows 7 computer and he said it runs good. He is using System Access. But I will pass this along to him. -- Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network. Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hi Michael, Thanks. I downloaded and tested the new version. Its ok, but I've noticed a bit of an accessibility issue with it. When the text is printed to the screen NVDA tends to stutter and speech is extremely choppy on 64-bit Windows. As I've seen this issue before I think the issue is that Richard is streaming the text to the console using cout instead of the older printf() function which seems to cause some weird issues with NVDA and other screen readers on 64-bit computers. I tried it on my old 32-bit Compaq and it was fine. So I think the printing issue is exclusively a 64-bit computer thing. You may want to pass this on to Richard as its a bit of a headache playing the games when the screen readers are studdering as text appears on screen. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.
Hey, Joseph. Yes he is planing on doing the other five games. The reason he had not been in the gaming picture because of personal reasons. But however he said that he would like to do all his six games for windows and hopefully make some new games. Richard was telling me yesterday in a email that he thought I did a great job by creating the De Steno Games IOS app. So when he puts all his games on windows there will be the mobile/portable version of the games. The windows version will be the updated versions and the mobile/portable version will be the app that I put together. -- Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network.
