Re: [Audyssey] mota 14
Hi Charles, Very true. Although, I can say I tried doing a recording earlier and the 3d version has a number of bugs in it such as the torch burning out but you can still hear it burning and things like that. That's one of those bugs I never fixed in the Genesis Engine, but the new cross-platform engine, Open G3D, doesn't seam to have knock on wood. Kind of funny that I've gotten so use to the new Open G3D engine that just playing the FPS version using the old engine felt weird. Several bugs I had fixed were back, and I hadn't played the game in so long that it took me a couple of tries to get use to playing the 3d version again. So I'll be very glad to get the code ported over to the new engine pretty soon. Smile. Size doesn't bother me at all. While if it was several gb it might be an issue, I dcan't really conceive of it being a problem given the size of audio games. That might helpgive you an idea of playing the game. Basically, all of the keyboard controls are fairly typical for a mainstream FPS game such as up arrow to run, down arrow to turn around in place, left/right turns you in place, shift-left and shift-right sidestep, alt-arrow keys jump, and control arrow keys are used for climbing. So if you walked into room 2 you would use the left/right arrow keys to center the enemy in your laser sight, use the spacebar to fire your gun, and then would use shift-up arrow to walk forward or press up arrow to run straight ahead. To climb the rope, which is in the center of the room, you have to center the sound in your headphones or speakers and use alt+up arrow to jump forward and grab the rope. Then, you could use control-up arrow to climb up into the next room above the one you are in. Does that make sense? Smile. Re: [Audyssey] (no subject)
well, on my 10mb no cap connection large files aren't much of a problem, I so vote for quality. I remember back when the old mota (as in mysteries of the aztechs) had cd quality sounds, then for no reason thomas compressed the sounds to 22khz, which sounds, well, not as good as it used to. at the moment mota (the new one) SOUNDS excellent and it should stay that way imo. - Original Message - From: Zachary Kline zkl...@speedpost.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, October 04, 2010 5:22 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] (no subject) Hi, I'm in favor of quality myself. Re: [Audyssey] mota download size
Hi Phil. This all depends on which compression the installer uses, though multiple layers of compression rarely makes sense. I've done an experiment with zip and 7z (aka lzma2). Zip makes the file 90% its origional size, while lzma2 yields 80%. - Original Message - From: Phil Vlasak p...@pcsgames.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, October 04, 2010 5:52 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] mota download size Hi Ryan, Sound files do not compress very much when zipped, and usually creating the install file does compress everything to as small of a download file size as possible. Smile. Hi Jim, Smile. That's all? That's pretty small potatoes compared to the current release of Mysteries of the Ancients. Beta 14 is almost 350 MB fully installed and even compressed using Inno Setup it is around 170 MB. The Linux setup looks like it will be around 250 MB because tar doesn't appear to have that high of compression. I'll probably have to see if I can find a better Linux compression format like bz2 and see if I can shrink that 250 down to something a bit smaller. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] mota download size
Hi Charles, Well, one purpose of using any zip tool is simply to pack multipl files into one single archive that can be downloaded. If you are going to use an archive like zip, bz2, gz, whatever you might as well find the one with the best compression as well. It is not just the people downloading the file we have to worry about. I have to use hard drive sspace on the server to store my files and while I have a max account that space isn't exactly infinite. Plus I am given a certain amount of bandwidth per month and if I go over that limit I either have to suspend downloads for a few days until my bandwidth gets reset on the first of the next month or pay the extra bandwidth fees. So it still pays to shrink the files size down for the person hosting the files as well as giving the end users a quicker and smaller download. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] mota download size
Hi Zack, Thanks for the suggestion. Next time I think I'll definitely try using bzip2 to compress the file. As you say gzip isn't very good. Unfortunately, I'm about 75% through uploading the Linux MOTA beta 14 file, and I'd hate to stop it, rezip the thing, and upload again after it has been going for nearly an hour or so. So next time I'll definitely experiment more with compression sizes and archive formats before defaulting to gzip. Re: [Audyssey] mota download size
Hi Ryan, Actually, Inno Setup, the Windows setup program i use, has its own built-in compression which is pretty good. It cut the install down from close to 350 MB to around 170 MB which is fairly good. I'm afraid you can't get much better than that for compression. As for the Linux side I'm still looking for the best compression format. I used gzip this time, but found out its compression ratio isn't very good. I'm going to look at bz2 as well as a couple of other options and see if I can shave off some of the file ssize off the Linux install. Instead of 245 MB maybe knock it down to 225 MB or something like that. Every little bit helps I guess. Cheers! [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 Released!
Hi everyone, I am happy to announce that Tomb Hunter Mysteries of the Ancients beta 14 is now officially uploaded and ready for download. This all new release is a major upgrade from beta 13 and earlier. What's New Beta 14 now uses our cross-platform engine Open G3D which uses a number of free and open source APIs such as OpenAL 1.1, SFML 1.6, libsndfile, and others instead of commercial APIs such as Microsoft DirectX. There is now an official Windows release and a Linux release for Debian based Linux operating systems. (May work on other distributions if all dependencies are met.) Uses uncompressed *.wav files rather than compressed *.ogg files for sounds and music. Fixed a number of bugs related to the new Open G3D engine. Created custom i386 SFML 1.6 deb packages for Ubuntu and Vinux distributions. Downloading the Game To download Mysteries of the Ancients uninstall any previous releases of the software and visit our products page http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/products.php to download either the Linux or Windows release. For the custom SFML packages visit http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/requirements/libsfml-1.6-i386.tar.gz and read the file guide.txt located in the Mysteries of the Ancients Docs directory for directions on installing SFML for Linux. Re: [Audyssey] mota download size
Hi Hayden, Well, personally I do notice some reduction in quality. It is very slight, but it takes some of the pitch out of the sounds, and it isn't quite as sharp/clear as a *.wav file. I suppose the fact I am a musician, am use to listening to tone and pitch, something like that is more apparent to me than a lay person. At any rate it isn't just audio quality. I also decided to go with *.wav files for the simple fact if I use any type of compression weather it be ogg, wma, wav, or xwma, whatever your program has to decompress all those files during runtime, such as when loading a new level, and therefore it is slower in loading the game levels, loading voice messages, whatever. It isn't too noticable on a new duel core system, but on an older 1 GHZ system, i happen to have laying around, it took quite a long time to decompress those sounds in real time. On 10/4/10, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: Hi Thomas, Although it seems that you have made up your mind, I shall put my 1 asnd a half cents into the conversation, and say that I saw no reduction of quality in your Ogg vorbus compression, and you might as well go for the smallest size possible. I hadn't thought of that at all.
Hi, Well, yes and no. If we are comparing it to the average audio game size it would be quite big. However, as it has been pointed out before most mainstream games are extremely huge compared to Mysteries of the Ancients. I think Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness is something like 2 GB fully installed. The latest Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider Underworld, is even bigger yet Star Wars Empire at War is also pretty huge. It is something like 4 GB fully installed. So MOTA isn't anywhere near those kinds of sizes.. [Audyssey] MOTA for Linux AMD64?
Hi Thomas, I was wondering if it might be possible to compile a version of your source code for AMD64-based Linux distributions? I tried to find a copy of your 32-bit sfml libraries at the URL you provided and had no luck. Perhaps you forgot to upload them? Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 Released!
So I see you decided to keep beta 14, even if the beta was not officially released? How was it different than the broken release and the official release? You see, I thought it was fully released and i installed iand played it. For some reason, I got no blue screen, so I did not have to uninstall the game. Is this game in 3D? Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 Released!
good game tom. enemies are good, but you never know you are in range of an enemy until its in front of you, its fine to shoot but because the sounds don't pan swinging at them is a bit hard. also if you walk and try to say pick up things you need to stop before you do that. objects don't pan so its harder to know when to pick things up. the game still crashes on exit. [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions
Hi Thomas, I managed to get my hands on 32-bit SFML libraries and so far have been enjoying the MOTA experience under Linux. There are a few hiccups though. The sound description menu doesn't seem to fully work. Some sounds, consistently, are not playing. Specifically, the ledge sound isn't playing, at least not in the menu. Nor does potion. Similar problems impact the game itself. I notice errors in the terminal from which I ran the game complaining about being unable to load sound buffers. Note that I confirmed the sounds exist, they're just not playing for some reason. Other than this annoyance, the game itself works great. Best and thanks for such a wonderful beta!
