Re: What is System Completion Code FD6?
In QuickRef, do Categories, then System Abend Codes. Select any of the system abend codes Fxx: Fnn Explanation: The system detected an error while processing a Supervisor Call (SVC) instruction. The last 2 digits of this completion code, nn, are the operand of the SVC instruction in hexadecimal. For example, completion code X'F0D' means that the error occurred while the system was processing SVC X'0D', that is, SVC 13. So, user SVC x'D6', or 214 has a problem. QuickRef has some suggestions. Look in IEASVCxx to see what product is using it. I don't have a 214 here, so I don't know if it may be the default for a product I don't run. Good luck. Re: Why are z/OS people so reluctant to use z/OS UNIX?
Try creating GDG(+1) from z/OS Unix. Note that using the 'cp' command generates two SMF 15 records - can't DSN trigger using it. Find something else that works with GDGs. I'll wait. While I'm in the shell, I can't use split screen. 13.11 and 3.17 don't have all the capabilities of the shell. Monitoring the Unix environment presents challenges. I have a comprehensive set of JCL to do a zillion things in classic MVS. Shell scripts don't cut it. Education issue? Perhaps. I'll get right on it in my copious free time. Mainframe auditors trying to understand Unix security model or Unix auditors trying to audit z/OS - both keep my life interesting. Inability of classic MVS utilities to manipulate Unix files. Much as it grates, I have to agree with Mr Gilmartin. If you really want adoption of Unix facilities, utilities and JCL should treat path/file same as DSN=, including executables. Please, please, please give me error messages that don't require multistage lookup. That LookAt and Quick-Ref can understand. Short version: the toolset is limited, Unix files are treated differently (or not at all) by traditional JCL and Utilities, Unix commands to manipulate data have (documented but non-intuitive) restrictions, and z Sysprogs are already swamped with keeping up with the technology, particularly in medium shops where very few people support a lot of infrastructure. I don't dislike Unix at all. I play with various versions of Unix and Linux at home. It's interesting comparing different OS capabilities and facilities. Here at work is a different story. Unexpected difficulties in the movement of data between z/OS Unix and classic MVS, and the manipulation of data from one environment to the other, plus the lack of supporting tools, all contribute to reluctance to develop applications based on Unix facilities. Steve, good luck. I've been at it for months, finally implemented two weeks ago. Still have a lot of problems with return code processing. Be up to date on maintenance. As in, check to see what PTFs came out TODAY. Be sure to load test thoroughly. What works fine on your testplex may very well fail in production. I opened over two dozen issues with CA while testing. Most were fixed by PTF, got a couple doc updates out of it. CA support has been very good. Looks like I've finally gotten to Level 1, though. Now, THAT one I have done. Had to, after the first attempt to go Production. The utility worked, just flagged a TON of stuff as bad. We accepted that and kept going. Cleaning up the v3.5 history and checkpoint files first will allow a successful fallback. Having to rerun VINIT to get the right internals loaded is a pain in the a$$, tho. I'd much rather the product load the damn internals when it starts, and quit screwing around with VINIT. Oh, and GSSA had to be active during the conversion, each way. And for the VINIT. Joy. We have 5 LPARs defined and they appear on that list in alphabetical order: DEV, PROD, TEST, VM, VMTEST. WAG says it's getting its relative number from there, but that hardly makes sense. (I double-checked with my rep last week on this.) I presume the reason is that an ICF engine has more moving parts and precision components forged from precious metals -- requiring higher manufacturing costs. These costs are passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices... :-D ;-) O:-) -- Edward E Jaffe Phoenix Software International, Inc 5200 W Century Blvd, Suite 800 Los Angeles, CA 90045 310-338-0400 x318 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.phoenixsoftware.com/ -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

A college degree can usually be taken as an indication of Ted's points. Provided other factors are allowed in place of a degree, I have no problem with Ted's statements. I DO have a problem with the a blanket college degree required for a job. My highest year of school completed? 10th grade. The Marine Corps took care of the rest in return for 21 years of my life. Re: Initapi errno 156
Dude, you're running on an unsupported OS, with obsolete Top Secret software. Ugly! OK, OK, I'm sure that is not your choice, but it needed to be said, dammit! :-) I'm sure you checked this stuff, but: Check the TSS Violation report to see if the failure made it to TSS. From the violation report, grab the failing ACID. Verify it is what you expect it to be. Do a list on the ACID: TSS LIST(acid) data(all) Verify the failing ACID has either a GROUP/DFLTGRP and UID under SEGMENT OMVS, or that Top Secret has a default User and Group defined in its control options under OMVSUSER / OMVSGRP. If these are in place, it's time to start checking for restrictions on use of IP functions. BTW, I've found TSS support to be very responsive and helpful. Harder as a third-party, I know. Um, if this -isn't- the Scott Ford I've been talking to the last few days on another topic, please ignore the smart-assery. Call 'EZASOKET' USING SOKET-INITAPI MAXSOC INITAPI-IDENT SUBTASK MAXSNO ERRNO IP-RETCODE We then receive a Errno 156 which is according to the Socket Return Codes This indicates a z/OS Unix process initialization failure. The RACF OMVS segment may not be defined or may contain errors such as an improper HOME() directory specification. The same code is working on a RACF Lpar and an ACF2 Lpar. I didn't mean to offend, Martin. As to what it SHOULD say, I'm not comfortable that I know the topic well enough to suggest how to rewrite it. Re: Health CHECK(IBMVSM,VSM_PVT_LIMIT)/VSM_SQA_THRESHOLD
Barbara's complaint is noted, but does not apply across every shop, of course. When we went to z/OS 1.7 last year, we increased ECSA. No problem on our test systems, where 1.7 lived for months of testing before migrating. All was well, until we got to Prod. Suddenly a problem surfaced that had not been uncovered in Test. If three very large CICS trans all ran at the same time, they ate all of EPVT and then Bad Things Happened. No good warning or error messages from the applications, of course. Seems the transactions had been tested one at a time by the applications group in the Testplex, and declared good.I wasn't here yet when my colleague had changed the parameters as he installed 1.7, and the changes had been made in Parmlib so long before they'd been kinda forgotten. Health Checker's warning of the change in EPVT size was a great help. I don't mean to take anything away from Barbara's point that this thing could be easier to administer. I'm a little nuts, but not crazy enough to hint this product is anything but user-surly. RACF and Member Level Protection
CA Top Secret supports member level security in a PDS or PDSE, allowing a variance of access authority to users of the dataset versus an individual member. We have that plugged in. A few months ago, there was a problem that led me to open an issue with Top Secret to verify what they do, and with another vendor to determine why their program hung on failed access at the member level. The other vendor runs RACF, and today told me his RACF Admin says RACF does not support member level protection. Not being a RACF guy, I went to the books. Neither the Admin Guide or User's Guide yielded anything to searches on 'member protection' or 'member level protection'. I would have sworn all three major security packages supported this function, but I can't find anything to verify that. Will someone who knows the true scoop hook me up with either No, RACF doesn't do that or Hey, dope. Look at reference here. Doggone, this man needs a beer (or 10) after work today... :-) Cheers,,,Steve Steve Conway Lead Systems Programmer Information Systems Services Division Computer Network Operations Phone: (703) 450-3156 Fax:(703) 450-3197 Shane [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: IBM Mainframe Discussion List IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU 03/12/2007 07:23 AM Please respond to IBM Mainframe Discussion List IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU To IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU cc Subject Re: Any DST Problems Yesterday? Re: Paging and SLOTS
Bob, In answer to your question about having 256M real storage, and not to take anything away from the very good answers you've already gotten, I offer this as a comparison. I have two z/OS 1.7 systems with 256M real each. They are running no applications except GDPS. There are no monitors, no CICS, no databases. There is no batch work except the occasional sysprog utility. D A,L shows 22 STCs and 2 TSO users. We are a medium-size shop, device-wise. Right after an IPL I use roughly 1 tracks of common storage on each system. Re: Rename Active IODF Whilst System Is Up?
I don't believe you can use a V5 IODF (created on the z/OS 1.7 system) on a z/OS 1.4 system. Perhaps one if the hardware gurus on the list can help out with a reference? Re: Rename Active IODF Whilst System Is Up?
Of course, I found what I was looking for right after I posted. In the HCD User's Guide, http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/cbdzug40.pdf?bcsi_scan_CD2948435F56D921=0bcsi_scan_filename=cbdzug40.pdf, Pg 68, IODF Release Level Compatibility. z/OS 1.4 requires compatibility PTF from APAR OA08197. HTH. Re: Rename Active IODF Whilst System Is Up?
snip Roy Hewitt's excellent z/OS 1.7 Migration Guide reference Thanks, Roy. The Migration Guide cuts to the heart of it even better than the HCD User's Guide. Great reference. Bruce Black posted: If you go to ISPF 6 and enter FDRDEBUG SYS you will get a display snip Sweet! Bruce Black posted: Ur welcome. FDRDEBUG has a lot of other function as well. snip Great stuff, Bruce. Thanks again. On Jul 26, 2002, Don Imbriale pointed out, in response to a similar query, LE run-time option CBLQDA(ON) allows dynamic allocation of QSAM files. Check the option to see if you allow it. Re: LPAR with GRSRNL=EXCLUDE can be added to a normal GRSplex? Please help!!!
Shane sez: The manuals are written by, and predominantly for, (United State) Americans. Expecting comprehensible and non-ambiguous English is asking for too much. An Aussie ragging on US English for being incomprehensible. I am speechless. (Those that know me realize the magnitude that implies.) We've missed you, Shane. Reference to TCPIP task functions?
Happy Friday! I think I remember, years ago, seeing a list of TCPIP tasks and what their functions were. I'm talking about the tasks you see listed in response to D OMVS,A=ALL: SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196623 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZBTCPIP SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196624 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZBTTSSL SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196625 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZBTMCTL SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196626 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZACFALG SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196627 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZASASUB SYSTCPIP TCPIP0041 196630 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZBTTMST SYSTCPIP OSNMPD 004F 196640 LATCHWAITPID= 0 CMD=EZASNMPD So far, I've googled various task names, web-wide and group ibm-main. I searched these books: Communications Server IP System Administrator's Commands, IP Configuration Guide, IP Configuration Reference, IP Diagnosis Guide, Unix System Services Planning, Unix System Services User's Guide, ABCs of z/OS System Programming Vol 9. Unsuccessfully. Will someone please provide me a reference for these tasks' functions?
