FYI From: CICS List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mary Rees Sent: Friday, August 03, 2007 7:11 AM I also contacted Mark about the IBMLink outages, and he said I could post this information to the CICS List: Due to the IBMLINK/ServiceLink Web outages over the past week, we are taking this opportunity to convey to you our sincere apologies for impacting your productivity and inform you of our planned actions taking place to improve availability of the various web tools you use from IBM. As you know the ServiceLink VM systems will remain available pending stability of the IBMLINK/ServiceLink web platform. We acknowledge that restoring access to VM IBMLINK:ServiceLink platform was an appropriate next step to provide a stable alternative and thank those of you who have taken that step. The IBMLINK/ServiceLink Web service was disrupted on July 30 and 31 for approximately 3 hours each day due to a Information Technology Infrastructure problem with the IBM Web Authentication system used by over 150 web applications and currently houses over 5 Million registered users worldwide. That root cause of that IT Infrastructure issue was rectified as of the end of July 31. As regards the ServiceLink outage of August 1 for approximately 5 hours, there were two unique root causes. One issue was that the IBM Web Authentication incorrect system setting change and secondly an error in the Domain Name Server caused IBM Web Authentication and other applications like IBMLINK/ServiceLink web platform requests to fail in the IBM Network. IBM has an architecture to enhance the IBM Web Authentication service redundancy. A major deliverable of this is being targeted for completion by 4Q 2007 close. Prior to then IBM is freezing any system changes related to IBM Web Authentication to maximize stability. Please let me know if you continue to see problems, or if you would like me to pass along any feedback to the IBMLink team. Hello Radoslaw, And if IBM actually released the full IBM-LINK service to the rest of the world you also would become addicted to it. Although I work in Singapore, through a set of circumstances, I have access to IBMLINK and it does enhance my ability to support the systems I am responsible for. Mostly I use it primarily to validate APARs/PTFs. Usually I access IBMLINK 3-5 times a week. So, for the rest of you, take these comments as saying we (i.e. non-USA sysprogs) would appreciate IBM treating all of us equally. If you give us access to IBMLINK it should be the same IBMLINK as our US-based compatriots use. IBMLINK for all - or NO IBMLINK at all ! Also, written comments can be proofread and perhaps revised before sending, but spoken words cannot later be made unspoken. You can't un-ring the bell. The e-mail could consist of the eloquence we so often find in these posts regarding how vital a tool this is and how it was trumpeted by IBM as being so 21st century etc. etc. Then we just need everyone on the list who feels aggrieved - probably many more than fruitlessly vent their bile in posts to us all - to click on the link and - just maybe - something good will come from it. If someone in IBM needs to spend time analysing these e-mails in order to block them perhaps some ingenuity can be applied - and there's so much of that available here - to defeat him/her. The effort to block the e-mails would require some management focus and it just might occur to the besuited ones that solving the problem at source would be a better use of resources than fending off the brickbats. Re: web IBMLINK down again - so what ?
Well first of all, I should probably point out that some of the more useful features available on IBMLink are not free but part of a chargeable service (Software Excel?). This I believe includes the ability to search on and examine known issues (open as well as closed APARs, as well as open an ETR (Electronic Trouble Report) on software problems that you can't resolve by simple searches. I find ETRs much more useful than phone conversations with the Support Center, because I can be much more precise in the problem description and also avoid playing the inevitable phone tag when I am away from my desk. ShopzSeries will also allow you to download PTFs, but IBMLink can in many cases be used to identify a specific PTF or circumvention that will fix your problem without having to wait in some queue for an indefinite time to speak to a live person, or having to install maintenance en masse. I would never want to go live with a major system or product upgrade without having assurances that IBMLink was available to minimize any downtime from unexpected problems. When an unusual error message is generated by the system, or an unchanged production application fails with some message and the related job or user has done nothing unusual, our first line of defense is to search on IBMLink. If you're lucky, you will find it's a known problem with a known solution (or perhaps the description will give insight into what unusual thing the user may have done). If this is a problem causing a production application to be down, your odds of getting it fixed in under 30 minutes, 24x7, is much better with IBMLink at your fingertips. When someone on ibm-main says watch out for APAR x, I use IBMLink to read the APAR description to determine whether we have a serious exposure to the problem and to determine if there is a resolving PTF. The last several weeks I have been installing and configuring some new versions of several IBM software products. Some of the product maintenance had System Holds with dependencies on APARS I couldn't identify in other products. With IBMLink I was able to identify in a minute a correct PTF in one case, and in another case determine the APAR was only for an FMID that was not applicable to our site. The first time I fired up the product in test, it failed with an ABEND. Through IBMLink I was able to locate the problem and a fix and had the problem resolved in under 15 minutes and resumed testing. A search for a problem that returns null results can also be useful: While it could be an indication you are the first to encounter the problem, it may also just be an indication that you need to re-examine your configuration steps to look for what you did incorrectly to cause the error. Occasionally I may go a week or two without using IBMLink, but when I need it, I need it ASAP. R.S. wrote: Robert Justice wrote: and I won't say the other comment, I promise. Trying to Revise an ETR gets Error The database is currently unavailable. The return code is 606. Please try again later. I called this in to support and after a number of exercises clearing browser cache and reproducing it several times they agreed to create a ticket. One thing about this process that is not too keen is that today the technician indicated it would take some time to checkout and to create a ticket and is going to call back with a ticket#. I even offerred to wait but no dice said it would take way too long. I expect any contact that goes beyond Hello would generate at ticket# in some system so that surprised me a little bit. Jon, While what you say here sounds good. I beg to differ. IBM-LINK is important, we cannot be productive in our jobs for long if it is not available. However, let's not forget the old days where we use the good 'ole telephone. Heck, I'm only in my low forties, and have not forgotten. That combined with downloading and receiving all available maintenance on a monthly basis so that mid-nite ptf you might need is already there is a big help. Bottom line is that they are YOUR systems to manage, not IBM's. Good change control, and release management goes a long ways to avoiding problems. I just reported a problem with ISPF - and posted it here. I found the problem before IBM did because I back tracked what I had applied, and started backing PTF's off, because I found that the problem did no exist on a lower ptf level. I'm not defending IBM here either. Pick your favorite ISV, are their web support structures anywhere near the depth of IBM's? Yet you put up with that? Re: IBMLINK DOWN ALL DAY?
I'm not saying to back to the phone. Heaven forbid! My issue is that we will be forced back to the phone when we cannot get to the web when we have a critical problem on our systems. We have a well designed process for change control, but even that cannot prevent all of our problems. No matter how good change control is there WILL be problems. When that happens we need immediate access to all resources for problem resolution, IBM and OEM. My issue is that IBM has a fast and reliable platform for IMBLINK that has worked for many years. It should remain available and yes the web interface has many good points so they should maintain BOTH platforms. That would give the greatest amount of reliability. Chances of both being down at the same time are very remote. Jon L. Re: IBMLINK DOWN ALL DAY? ( SEV1 Ticket# 31168343)
I have to say that I am not unhappy with the functionality of IBMLink on the web. The availability of IBMLink through the web is totally unacceptable. If it cannot be resolved IBM should not withdraw IBMLINK 3270. As with other distributed applications it seems like the experience varies. It worked fine for me from 5Pm - 11Pm yesterday as I updated several PMR's through the evening. Today it has been DOA since 6am. I am on the phone with IBMLink support. They just tried it and got the same error I did HTTP 500. A new SEV1 ticket has been opened with the support team # 31168343. Moaning on IBM-MAIN doesn't tell the IT folks at IBM if you need IBMLink (I do! I have a PMR I need to update) We will be raising this issue with IBM and will have a handful of tickets and specific dates and time of unavailability to cite. Do the same! Don't whine... Escalate with facts in hand. The status message at IBMlink support should be up to date it was from yesterday 1:15PM and indicated that it was down with no ETA and gave a particular reference #. The support person indicated that ticket was closed and resolved. The message should have been updated at that time:-( Providing incorrect information to customers at the gateway into support is a poor way to start the call. IBMLink is down and the technician was able to immediately confirm this. That IBM is not using it's own tools or third party tools to detect system availability issues from the outside and react is unacceptable. Many alternatives exist Site Seer and other tools. If the front door to your companies application goes down you should know before customers start calling the help desk! Monitoring performance and available and multiple tier applications with a web presentation layer is hard. IBM is one of the solution providers we are using to do it. Maybe they should get the ITCAM tools on these servers:-) John I agree. If you try to use IBMLink and it doesn't work call IBM! Take the time to hold and talk to a technician don't go away without a ticket#. For further assistance, kindly contact IBMLink Customer Support Center at 1-800-543-3912.
