Thanks Craig. Maybe you're getting a bit of

Yes, I remember that Seaside convention, glad
that Grayland was all it had been cracked up to
be. Heck, even hanging a loop off the motel
balcony at that convention was pretty
interesting. And now we're putting a DKaz out
on the hotel lawn at conventions. Too bad the Pacific was so far away.

(and thanks for the JOUB posting)

I just received a couple of the KB-5 units from
a gentleman in Maine who makes them. As you
mentioned, I don't think the QB-18I transformers
are in production any longer. I got them on Ebay
many years ago. They are an 18:1 unit. The s/n
difference was what was really pronounced. I
live in a noisy area, which influenced my choice
with the ALA 1530ln. Living as far inland as I
do, I anticipated the need for amplification, as
quiet as practical. The ALA 1530ln was so quiet
compared to what I was accustomed to, that at
first I thought something was wrong with the
antenna. Further evaluation revealed that the
s/n of that antenna is simply head and shoulders
above anything I had used in the past. It was
just behind the Conti loop as far as apparent
gain and equivalent in the s/n category. I would
add that I thought that the s/n of either the
KB-5 or the QB18I was also degraded by the
introduction of the DX Engineering RPA-1 preamp.
The "cleanest", most intelligible signals were
with either the ALA 1530ln, or the other two
transformers without amplification. This was my
first go at a vs b vs c testing, with me
climbing up a ladder switching out antenna
transformers during the brief window of TP
signals present at this location. I must confess
that a Grayland session right after the 2006
IRCA Convention hosted by Pat Martin at Seaside
left a sustained and indelible interest in TP
dxing on me! While health and other
considerations influenced me to move back down
to town from the mountains where bogs and EWEs
abounded, I will continue to squeeze all of the
blood out of this "turnip" that I can, hi!

 Interesting results
Craig.   It sounds as if the FLG-100LN isn't

 functioning properly.  (first thought...power supply?)

When you say "outperformed" was it in raw gain, signal to
 noise or ?

I'm not familiar with either the  KB-5 or QB-18I.Â
 Are these no
 longer in production?

Please correct me if I'm wrong Colin, but weren't your brief 891
clips from 1339-1345UT on 16 Sept (not this morning)? During that
time period here 891 was JOHK, often quite rugged to hear, but pretty
fair at 1344UT.Seeing you have at least two receivers, maybe
another time, park the other one on 594 and see what you think about
you're hearing on 891.

Yesterday, although some DUs did turn up, was thunderously Asian
here. 1116 in Japanese for example. Don't think that would fly for
long in Brisbane.

Colin, I'd love to hear a clip from your 891. Listened to my wav files,

891. Just a het, so not sure whether you meant another video clip or not.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-17 (Conclusion)

2016-09-17 Thread d1028gary
The Asian big guns sounded big indeed this morning as unusually good
propagation extended for a second day, but the second-tier TP's seemed to drop
off significantly. 594, 657, 1053 and 1566 managed their best signals of the
new season so far, though, with most of the other regulars showing up with
serious energy.

At my 1245 start time 1566-HLAZ's Japanese service was already at a blowtorch
level, and with 594-JOAK and the 1053-Jammer also unusually strong it seemed
like this morning might feature a repeat of yesterday's exceptional session.
For the most part the other Asian big guns on 693, 747, 774 and 828 followed
the plan, but sunrise enhancement didn't provide the same kind of boost to the
more exotic Asians. The Chinese mid-band stations on 1017, 1035 and 1044 were
seriously down from yesterday, and there was no mix of 603-China and HLSA.
About the only improvement over yesterday was a fair to good signal from
1575-VOA late on at 1330, and an unusually good signal from 657-Pyongyang (good
signal, not programming), which hit its best level of the new season around
1327. A presumed 738-BEL2 also matched its fair signal from yesterday, along
with a similar signal from 1134-JOQR. Steady rain in my back yard made the
session interesting at times, but didn't really affect the DXing. Ov
erall the morning was fairly interesting because of the potent big gun
signals, which probably were overlooked a little yesterday in the rush to track
down the mid-band Chinese.

657 Pyongyang BS Pyongyang, N. Korea Female and male Korean shouters at
unusually strong level at 1327; best signal of the new season (with some
Audacity program noise reduction, which unfortunately couldn't improve the
programming)
https://app.box.com/s/kzw46ox4g5zbzft8eqomqdw2732ol4ui

1053 Korean Jammer Monster buzz at 1313; best signal of the new season (on the
same intellectual level as the 657 content)
https://app.box.com/s/13hcxljhq1hqv8nsfdhpmabbcgfzy1wb

1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Japanese service at blowtorch level at 1253; best

Another new one for me. Of course, I haven't been at this very long out
here, so most things are still new. :-). And Nick, yes, it certainly is a
lot better than Lion's Bay!

1. IRAN - WS IRAN 702 kHz (Kiashahr) 2358-0003 UTC: AA mx to TOH, directly
into NA and then Quran. No mention of 'Radio Iran', so WS presumed with
bigger transmitting power. Good-Very Good. Rcdg from 2358.

Thanks so much Mauno for identifying the R Damascus ID for me. I went back
and listened to the recording about a dozen times at the 44 second mark and
I'm still thinking "Really? There's an "Idha'atul-Dimashk" in there? Wow, I
just can't hear it!". My ears are just not tuned yet to AA pronunciation,
but I have confidence it will come, I just need to keep trying. In the
meantime, thanks for your patience and help!

Kind regards,

Michael

PS Syria was actually a better catch for me because it's a new country!

Re: [IRCA] Inland TP's

2016-09-17 Thread C B via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I just received a couple of the KB-5 units from a gentleman in Maine who makes
them. As you mentioned, I don't think the QB-18I transformers are in production
any longer. I got them on Ebay many years ago. They are an 18:1 unit. The s/n
difference was what was really pronounced. I live in a noisy area, which
influenced my choice with the ALA 1530ln. Living as far inland as I do, I
anticipated the need for amplification, as quiet as practical. The ALA 1530ln
was so quiet compared to what I was accustomed to, that at first I thought
something was wrong with the antenna. Further evaluation revealed that the s/n
of that antenna is simply head and shoulders above anything I had used in the
past. It was just behind the Conti loop as far as apparent gain and equivalent
in the s/n category. I would add that I thought that the s/n of either the KB-5
or the QB18I was also degraded by the introduction of the DX Engineering RPA-1
preamp. The "cleanest", most intelligible signals were with either the ALA
1530ln, or the other two transformers without amplification. This was my first
go at a vs b vs c testing, with me climbing up a ladder switching out antenna
transformers during the brief window of TP signals present at this location. I
must confess that a Grayland session right after the 2006 IRCA Convention
hosted by Pat Martin at Seaside left a sustained and indelible interest in TP
dxing on me! While health and other considerations influenced me to move back
down to town from the mountains where bogs and EWEs abounded, I will continue
to squeeze all of the blood out of this "turnip" that I can, hi!

[IRCA] PART 2 - September 17, 2016 West Coast TP Report - Victoria B.C.

2016-09-17 Thread R. Colin Newell
Yesterday was a pretty amazing Trans-Pacific session that I stumbled into
late in the game - like arriving at an office party an hour late and the
other revellers are well into the celebration. Today was more sedate,
perhaps more "normal" for this time of the year, and I had more time to
flesh out some of the action channel by channel.

Mid-band observations:

846 Khz UNID 1327 YL in lang - a myriad of possibilities but nothing
definitive -

855 Khz Various - this channel is usually a mess of off frequency stations
with almost no one ever rising to the surface - today it was like a
graveyard channel with growls and hets - An interesting channel to sit on
but rarely very productive.

864, 873, 882 - Good carriers / near audio in a clutch of channels beset by
TV buzz and/or off frequency operators.Yesterday Japan was in charge on 873
- today nobody in particular.

891 Khz Various - when in Kona, Thailand holds this channel like an NHL
goaltender - yesterday there was some good audio here / not so much today -
so just noticed low levels of intelligence today. From yesterday -
https://youtu.be/rd0cCiTEjQc?t=3m34s

918 Khz UNID - noted in what I thought was English at 1332 -- no idea

954 Khz Japan - JOKR - 1347 UTC in the clear with JJ YL.

972 Khz Korea KBS HLCA - at medium levels - relative to yesterday as
MASSIVE levels. 1330U

1017 Khz Japan JOLB Fukuoka - 1329 UTC - with typical JJ OM/YL (way better
yesterday morning )

1053 Khz Korea JAMMER - at absurd levels for most of the session 1307 -->
1355U - Occasionally some JJ and then
some KK would rise to the surface -- but rarely more than a minute at a
time before the Jam would return

1098 Khz Marshall Islands - brilliant open-carrier between 1310 rising in
strength through sunrise.

1116 Khz 4BC Brisbane - lively EE chatter appearing at various times
between 1320 and 1356 UTC

1242 Khz JAPAN JOLF - in most of the time between 1320 and 1350 at good
levels in JJ

1287 Khz JAPAN JOHN Hokkaido - 1320 JJ OM

1323 Khz UNID - assume China with pop music at 1322

1386 Khz UNID - noted music in a quick pass at fair levels

1422 Khz UNID - " " " " " "

1566 Khz HLAZ - at good levels - a tad hotter yesterday - 1323 UTC

1575 Khz VOA Thailand - actually besting 1566 in terms of clarity and
signal strength - 1325

Today was predominantly Low and Mid-band favoured -- less stressful than
yesterday - and less heard.

[IRCA] PART 1 - September 17, 2016 West Coast TP Report - Victoria B.C.

2016-09-17 Thread R. Colin Newell
Whereas yesterday was a frenzy of information overload after starting a
stellar session late, todays earlier rising and calmer conditions were a,
*ahem*, welcome relief from yesterdays hyper enhanced madness (well
documented in a couple of YouTube videos on my "channel".

Starting at the bottom of the dial this AM at around 1305 UTC and working
up.

576 AUS 2RN (t) likely the bouncy pop music and cheerful EE chatter at 1324U

585 Various - Jumble of stuff happening here but no winners - 1325U

594 JAPAN JOAK Tokyo - one of the more consistent signals of the dawn
session with typical JJ OM/YL commentary 1304 -> sunrise

603 KOREA KBS2 Seoul - most reliable low band Korean often // to 558 but
the latter was a no show this AM - often all alone after 600 and 610 are
longgone. 1310U -> sunrise

612 Australia 4QR Brisbane - best low-band Aussie day after day often
getting a nice sunrise boost - like today - most audible 1310 -> 1340

621 UNID - YL likely in Korean - no where near as good as yesterday morning
- 1310U

639 UNID - A combination of local electronic buzz and a jumble - but always
there this AM

657 DPRK - assume the KK chatter this AM at threshold - also a shadow of
what it was yesterday 1311U

666 JAPAN - JOBK - Osaka - peaking late with JJ OM around 1340U

675 New Zealand - RNZ National - was sure I heard Vietnamese hear around
1340 but by 1350 it was all jaunty EE patter - https://youtu.be/3UrPdsk60hQ

702 A couple of things struggling in the immense splatter this AM - maybe
EE, likely DU - but just not enough.

747 JAPAN JOIB Hokkaido - owned this channel from 1305 -> 1355 when it
faded or I left. Likely longer with language lessons

756 New Zealand (t) RNZ - assuming the jaunty big band kind of music and
word here and there. 1326 U

774 JAPAN JOUB Akita - complete ownership of this channel from 1305 through
1355 switch off (of the radio) occasional hints of EE underneath - but this
Sumo powerhouse held forth and easily brushed aside challengers.
https://youtu.be/Y7lUhjpYZVw - yesterday on DX150B

792 AUSTRALIA 4RN Brisbane - likely the jaunty music and lively EE chatter
- 1313 U

819 DPRK Unlike yesterday ( https://youtu.be/Ac8Sjldgu70 ) this AM was
little more than a bee buzzing against 820 domestic. 1315 U

828 JAPAN JOBB Osaka - holding the channel the entire morning with Language
lessons

RECEIVERS - DRAKE R8 / AOR 7030+ / DX150B / NHP Fishbarrel Spotter /
ANTENNAS - FLG100 W/NW Flag with VACTROL // ALA100 Wellbrook (N-S)

A more thorough review of my recordings revealed that things
weren't as bad as I had first thought. In fact, if I hadn't experienced

yesterday, but still a decent morning.

to fair with Japanese talk at 1245.

693 JOABTokyo, JAPANMan in Japanese, // other NHK2 big guns at 1243.

747	JOIB	Sapporo, JAPAN	For some reason this one was nearly as good
signal as yesterday, noted with Japanese talk over background music at 1244.

774	3LO	Melbourne, AUSTRALIA	Discussion by two men at 1207, with no
trace of Japan at this time.

774	JOUB	Akita, JAPAN	Had taken over the frequency by 1244, with
Japanese talk // other NHK2 signals.

792	4RN	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	Had been a strong carrier for most of the
session, but only audio heard was at 1300 with time pips and ABC news
fanfare.

828	JOBB	Osaka, JAPAN	Traces of Japanese talk when I first tuned in at
1158 (and was the only Japanese heard at that time). Came up to fair
signal by 1244 peak.

1116 4BCBrisbane, AUSTRALIANot as good as yesterday, but had
peaks at fair level with talk programming at 1212 and 1240.

1386NHK2 synchros, JAPANJapanese talk, // 774 etc at 1245.

1566 HLAZ	Cheju, KOREA	Poor-fair with talk at 1246, and never did
better than that today.

1575	VOA	THAILAND	For some reason I never heard this yesterday, but was
in today at poor-fair level at 1249 with man speaking.

I felt the same way until I added the ELAD S2 receiver to my shack.
There is no way I could have logged 125 new stations this summer the old

By the way, I still DX the old fashioned way when time permits.
Recording is just another tool in my DX arsenal.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-17 (Preliminary)

2016-09-17 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Richard, Walt and Dennis for their earlier reports. Asian propagation
was again well above average here for September of a lean solar year, with the
Japanese and Korean big guns on 594, 1053 and 1566 exceptionally strong. Most
of the other Japanese and Korean regulars were pretty energetic as well, at
levels similar to yesterday's exceptional session. The strength and variety of
the second-tier Asians wasn't quite as good as yesterday, though, and the
mid-band Chinese stations in particular were a lot more sedate. A full report
with several MP3's will follow.

Conditions appeared down from this morning compared to yesterday. At 1241,
presumed JOUB, 774 w/male talking, at 1315 male/female talking, sounded like EE
lesson. Hets on 594, 693, 1287 & 1566 at 1244. Hets on 747, 828, 1422 & 1566 at
1326. Het on 1566 lasted the longest this morning, gone by 1355, a bit past
LSR.

I did some testing with transformers on my wnw Conti super loop this morning.
Between an FLG 100ln, a KB-5 MW/LW balun and an Erickson QB-18I.
Interestingly the KB-5 and QB-18I consistently outperformed the FLG-100ln on
the loop, with and without the use of the DX Engineering RPA-1 preamp. The ALA
1530ln held it's own. I used JOUB and 1566(presumed HLAZ) as the test
frequencies. The test was limited to challenging TP DX targets for the Midwest.
Too bad yesterday's apparent excellent conditions did not carry over to today,
when I didn't have to go to work.

[IRCA] WC TA

2016-09-17 Thread transistor
About 6 or 7 years ago Steve Ratzlaff and I connected via email and started a
coordinated listening effort for long-wave broadcasters from Europe and Africa.

On evenings when I could hear them in Michigan I would email Steve and in spite
of being on the West Coast, he could often capture them also. We were pretty
amazed.  Steve was running some incredibly long wires at the time and I think
it goes without saying is a pretty savvy radio DX'er.

We referred to them as TA's until I examined the path one day and came to the
conclusion that Steve was actually listening over nearly a trans-polar route.
Which made it all the more impressive.

I don't know how you West Coast guys do it!

Re: [IRCA] Sept 16 - super-opening - 1st video - Victoria B.C.

2016-09-17 Thread Mauno Ritola
Generally stations are not interested in reports from outside their
target area anyway. If the location of the web receiver is clearly
stated, there shouldn't be a problem. I seldom send reports these days,
but I have sent one a couple of times to Deutsche Wetterdienst,
Pinneberg using both my own receiver and reception evaluation about
signal and audio quality from half a dozen of Western European receivers
around North Sea (their target area) and they have been very grateful.

I agree with Colin, unattended listening isn't real DX. I guess it's my
old age but I have a disdain for recording multiple frequencies
simultaneously, then trying to figure out what was received later.

Re: [IRCA] India, Language Series, and SDR's

2016-09-17 Thread Michael Yule
Thank you very much James for taking the time to list the stations in India
that you have heard. I really appreciate the list, and the effort you made
to provide it to me. I will be listening around 0022 for sure!

Hi again Guy! I also remember the visit you made to my home on French Street
- I had my shack set up in a little room I had made in the basement, and was
running an NRD515, ICF2010, and a 60m dipole. My how things have changed.
Now as you probably know I am living across the country in Nova Scotia, and
if you're ever in this part of the country it's be great to see you again. I
didn't know that the language series had been mae into audio - I'll check it
out on Colin's website for sure. I was thinking of the pamphlet yesterday
and remember that it was 5 pages or so of mimeographed text - sort of the
reproduction quality of a bad fax - but I also remember pulling it out
whenever I heard a language I didn't recognize and trying to use the tips he
gave to identify what I was hearing. Of course those were the days when I
had the WRTH (WRTVH in those days) open along with the lists at the back of
PopComm and whatever I'd written down from the HCJB DX Partyline to try and
give me some clues as well - of course trying to figure out what frequency I
was listening to on my Grundig Satellit 6000 was a major part of the battle!
Ah, nostalgia - what would we be without war stories!

Anyway, in the present, I certainly agree with the sentiments about using a
web SDR to log and QSL stations - I never saw the point, you might as well
try and QSL streaming audio. Not really what I think that the hobby is
about, although I guess that the person(s) in question have their own hobby
- not DX'ing, but collecting QSL's. Whatever. OTOH, I'm afraid that I must
respectfully disagree with Colin and Richard regarding whether using an SDR
is 'cheating' or not, and the basis of my argument is this - having an SDR
and recording a swathe of bandwidth is like having enough money to have a
receiver for each and every frequency one wants to listen to with some type
of recording device to review them later (because we can only listen to one
station at a time), and we all know that many of us with enough money have
had multiple analogue receivers in the past (and still do!) with no thoughts
of having someone call 'foul' on this approach. I don't see any difference
in the two approaches, except that SDR is more complete and more achievable
financially. Really there is no ethical or other difference in my mind
between having 2 radios, listening to one and recording whatever happens on
the second one later, and recording 'n' stations on an SDR.

But what do I know. :-)

Thanks again James and Guy!

Regards,

Michael

[IRCA] TP 16 Sep Victoria version

2016-09-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Not sure I can take another morning like that one...

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

well yes, 594 JOAK , 747 JOIB, 774 JOUB, 828 JOBB, 1053 the jammer,
1566 HLAZ with Japanese program; sometimes they faded, then they came
back and assaulted the eardrums once more.

and...

567 JOIK woman in Japanese //594 1333UT
1566 HLAZ woman in Chinese 1222UT (not quite as good as the Japanese
program, but very listenable)

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

612 4QR for a changed of pace, man in DU English 1343UT
639 CNR1 and? low and high pip at 1330UT, sounded like Beijing time check
657 slow music 1253UT
702 2BL woman and man in DU English 1354UT //612 which was weaker
774 3LO weak ABC pips u/NHK2 which still dominated at 1400UT
819 North Korea? operatic singing 1307UT and 1318UT
837 JOQK man in Japanese //594 1340UT
891 JOHK man in Japanese //594 1343UT
954 JOKR woman in Japanese 1336UT
1134 JOQR man in Japanese 1319 commercial jingle; earlier (1246UT)
accompanied by another station, low energy man as a contrast.
1287 JOHR man and woman in Japanese bookending things, this strength
1157UT and 1344UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

576 pop music 1331UT Aussie?
603 HLSA woman in Korean into soft music //558 1324UT
693 JOAB snippets of man in Japanese //774 popping above the 690
splatter 1152UT; had it later and better, but my notes are too
chaotic to find that just now
711 HLKA man talking 1330UT, squabbling with 710 splatter; ID'd
earlier by //864 at 1256UT, lagging slightly

873 JOGB man in Japanese after pips 1100UT //774
981 CNR1 man and woman in rapid Chinese 1325-6 //1098 and //1035
1008 JONR man in rapid Japanese 1317UT
1017 CRI likely, woman in Korean, musical interlude 1330UT
1044 CRI woman in Japanese, couldn't find any shortwave parallels though
1098 CNR1 slightly offset from //981
1143 pop music not //738 at 1341UT, something else with it a couple
of minutes earlier?

1206 Yanbian woman in Korean, then man, off channel, 1301UT
1575 VoA? man talking SE Asian language of some sort, soon faded 1236UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 JOQG woman talking //594 1237UT
603 JOOG/JOKK man talking rapidly //594 1322UT; haven't heard this
for long time

621 traces on female operatic singing 1303UT
702 NHK2 man talking //774 1322UT, plus something else.
729 man talking briefly creeping through 730 splatter 1310UT, not //567 though
909 woman talking, not //774 1337UT
918 man talking Chinese inflection 1325UT
1035 CNR1 man and woman in rapid Chinese 1325-6 //1098 and 981
1116 pop music, woman talking, Japanese inflection 1335UT
1152 NHK2 synchros Chinese lessons //747 1342UT
1179 woman talking Japanese inflection 1319UT
1386 NHK2 man talking //747 1325UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here
