Re: [IRCA] [mwdx] DX tests
Unfortunately all my efforts so far this season have come up empty. It just seems like fewer and fewer stations have any interest in this kind of non-profit making activity. I did, however, just get a good lead on a possible test today, so hopefully I'll have something to announce soon. As always, if you have a friendly station in your area or one that you have a relationship with the station personnel who might be open to testing, please let me know. Our committee can take it from there. 73 - more to follow. [IRCA] Possible CBA Moncton, NB DX Test
Attention DXers Get out your DX calendars and mark down early Monday morning, April 7. Saul Chernos - our Canadian Connection - has been working the phones again, and we are hoping to have a real treat to finish out the 2007-2008 DX Test Season. CBA 1070 in Moncton, New Brunswick, plans to sign off for good as it completes its switch to FM (106.1) at 0700 Atlantic time on April 7. The Broadcast Test Committee is currently working with CBA personnel to include DX test content in some form during the overnight hours leading up to the official shut-down. Because of the late timing, we thought it prudent to get the word out as soon as possible even though we are still in the process of finalizing details and verifying if and when the test material will air. CBA runs 50,000 watts U1 day and night. If this test runs, expect much of the same content you've heard in other DX tests. We will post updates as soon as we have new information. If you are in touch with other DXers who do not have computer or Internet access, please fill them in on this. We'd hate for anyone to miss out on this opportunity. [IRCA] FW: WHBC 1480 kHz Canton, OH DX Test
I received this somewhat disappointing e-mail today from Dale Lamm at WHBC. I wonder if some of our list members who are professional broadcasters might contact Dale directly and see if we can still salvage a full-blown DX Test? I don't know the applicable FCC rules that well - particularly how the Commission interprets and potentially enforces them. Perhaps a little broadcaster to broadcaster communication could prove helpful. Thanks for anything anyone can do. I'll hold off for a little while before getting back in touch with Dale. 73s, Jim Pogue IRCA/NRC Joint BTC Coordinator Memphis, TN -Original Message- From: Dale Lamm [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 21, 2008 12:28 PM To: Jim Pogue Subject: RE: WHBC 1480 kHz Canton, OH DX Test Jim, Am writing to update you on the 3/29/08 DX test with WHBC. I am afraid we will need to postpone the test as published to avoid entanglements with FCC rule 73.72. Looking closely at FCC 73.72, it says ...provided no interference is caused to other stations maintaining a regular operating schedule within such period. See the 73.72 excerpt below. (a) An AM station may operate during the experimental period (the time between midnight and sunrise, local time) on its assigned frequency and with its authorized power for the routine testing and maintenance of its transmitting system, and for conducting experimentation under an experimental authorization, provided no interference is caused to other stations maintaining a regular operating schedule within such period. If we interpret the Rules strictly, then they would seem to prohibit operation at night while using the daytime power and antenna pattern. Because WHBC-AM has a nighttime authorization which allows us 24/7 operation, my view is that special ID's aired in the wee hours are acceptable, so long as they are transmitted using authorized power and pattern for the period. We share the 1480 frequency with other broadcasters, one of them located in our own state. Let's discuss what our remaining options are before 3/29. [IRCA] WBIX DX Test Final Report
WBIX DX Test Final Report Let me think of some appropriate superlatives: spectacular, amazing, overwhelmingly successful nope, they still dont capture how great this late-February DX test from Natick, Massachusetts came out. In addition to being heard in at least 18 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces, the test was also logged in Finland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Heres the LONG list of DXers who have reported hearing the test: Mark DeLorenzo South Dennis, MA Dave Hochfelder Albany, NY Steve Howe Saint Albans, VT Curtis Sadowski Paxton, IL Joe Miller Troy, MI Mike Brooker Toronto, ON Craig Healy Providence, RI George Sherman Minnesota Perry Crabill Winchester, VA Mark Gerwlivch Markham, ON Mark Connelly - Billerica, MA Rob Ross London, ON (DXing on an Ultralite radio of course) Bruce Portzer Seattle, WA Tom Jasinski Shorewood, IL Bjarne Mjelde Berlevag, Norway Jan Edh Freddiksfors, Sweden OJ Sagdahl Tronheim, Norway Andrew Blade York, UK Sig Andersson Norrköping, Sweden Torolf Johnsson Stockholm, Sweden Dave Pyatt Burlington, ON Bob Galerstein Monroe, NY Dave Braun Wyoming, DE Scott Fybush Rochester, NY Joe Wozniak St. Louis, MO Rich Line Sterling Heights, MI David Faulkner Albany, NY Torgeir Woxen Sørumsand, Norway Barry Davies Carlisle, UK Shawn Axelrod Winnipeg, MB Neil Kazaross Barrington, IL Jim Wallace Charleston, WV Tim Noonan Oak Creek, WI Steve Francis DXing from Newport News, VA Dave Larrabee Columbia, MD Jim Solatie Lemmenjoki, Finland Eric Söderman Norrköping, Sweden Håkan Sundman Lemmenjoki, Finland Ken Baird Sorn, Scotland Kermit Geary Walnutport, PA Jim Paige Sterling Heights, MI Steve Kennedy Coal Township, PA Charles Helms Nutley, NJ Philip Chiello, Jr. Elm Grove, WI Kraig Krist Manassas, VA Leslie Wood East Meadow, NY John Fisher North Chelmsford, MA Mary Karren-Landry Poland Spring, ME John Malicky Pittsburgh, PA Andrew Blade Ayrshire, Scotland It seems that the only DXers east of the Mississippi River who had a problem hearing the test were those like me here in Memphis who live in WBIXs protective null. Likewise, J.D. Stephens and Les Rayburn in Alabama reported no success in hearing this most desirable test. A trend that appears to be developing is a greater international interest in trying for DX tests. This is indeed exciting, and a potentially strong selling point to station engineers and management for future tests. Evidence supporting some unrealized potential for future successes in this area is provided by comments from DXer Mark Connelly in Massachusetts: At 0016 EST / 0516 UTC on 24 FEB I had no problem hearing the WBIX-1060 Natick, MA test on the DXTuner receiver located in Ilfracombe, England, he wrote. Code ID's, sweep tones, and voice announcements came through fine. Clearly dominating the channel. (Other DXTuners) that had some signal: Edinburgh, Scotland (poor, much weaker than at Ilfracombe, bits of voice and tones) Italy and Germany (carrier evident but nil / nearly nil audio) Caracas, Venezuela (bits of Morse code ID in huge furball jumble). Thanks for sharing this fascinating info Mark. Perhaps we need to try and reach out to DXers in Latin America and encourage them to begin listening for tests. I have not received any reports from DXers in those regions on any tests this season. As the prime BCB listening time begins to transition into nights with higher QRN levels and more hours of daylight, I am still trying to nail down just a couple more DX tests. More to follow on these as details become available. Once again, our sincere thanks to WBIX Chief Engineer Grady Moates for agreeing to conduct this test, and to BTC member Paul B. Walker Jr. for his persistent efforts to arrange it. Now to the task of processing the many requests for QSLs. [IRCA] Not an ultralite but ...
I have an Eton E10 portable that I really don't need since I almost never use it any more. I bought in about 2 years ago while deployed on the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, but haven't really used it since. Therefore, if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to part with it for $50 plus a few bucks for shipping ... roughly half of what I paid for it. The deal includes the receiver, soft carrying case and charger/power supply. I can't find the manual at the moment, but if I don't locate it I'll try to download a copy from the Internet. One bit of cosmetic damage - the little flap on the back that is supposed to flip up and slightly elevate the receiver is broken. I have the flap and it could probably be repaired with a little effort. If anyone is interested, please e-mail me directly. Thanks. She is much sharper than her years might indicate, but not particularly techno-savvy (neither am I - HA!). We aren't afraid to spend a few bucks, but want to ensure we get the best value for price. If you have any thoughts along these lines, please e-mail me back directly so we don't clutter up the lists with OT stuff. [IRCA] WKDK DX Test Final Report
WKDK DX Test Final Report To paraphrase a well known member of our hobby community (apologies to GH), if anyone ever tells you that DX tests on graveyard frequencies don't get out, don't you believe them! Powell Way III's great test over his 1240 kHz station on the morning of Feb. 11 was heard well throughout the South, along the Eastern Seaboard and into the Midwest. Here's our list of the lucky folks who've check in to say they heard WKDK ... Newberry County's VOICE for over 60 Years! Fred Nordquist - Moncks Corner, SC Paul Walker Jr. - Abbeville, SC Dave Hochfelder - Albany, NY Joe Miller - Troy, MI Jim Renfrew - Holley, NY Willis Monk - Old Fort, TN Les Rayburn - Central Alabama J.D. Stephens - Hampton Cove, AL Dave Pyatt - Burlington, ON, Canada Steve Francis - Alcoa, TN Tom Jasinski - Shorewood, IL Chris Johnson - Taylors, SC And an anonymous posting from Michigan on the DXTESTS.INFO site. There were a number of tentatives as well, including: Saul Chernos - Burnt River, ON, Canada Mark Gerwlivch - Markham, ON, Canada Dave Lang - Waterford, CT Jim Pogue - Memphis, TN We'll have to wait until Powell has a chance to work through the reports to see if we hit pay dirt or just plain dirt. Several other DXers tried for the test but mostly just heard the old graveyard gumbo/ These DXers included Joe Wozniak in St. Louis, Steve Ratzlaff in Oregon, Frank Aden in Idaho, and Wayne Heinen in Colorado. For a few others who didn't hear WKDK, the time spent at the dials was not a complete loss as it did yield some new ones for them. Dan Riordan in Sherwood, OR, heard two he need from California, namely KNRY and KSUE. And Craig Barnes in Wondervu, CO, added KCCR in Pierre, SD, to his logbook. Again, our sincere thanks to Powell Way III for conducting this test. Hearing a graveyard station is always a treat in my book. Remember to keep checking the DXTESTS.INFO Web site frequently and listen to the BTC Podcasts for news and late-breaking developments. [IRCA] WNTP DX Test postponed
Just in case anyone missed this, I'm retransmitting René's earlier e-mail regarding postponement of tonight's test. Hi all, Because of the inclement weather today and tonight here in Philadelphia, I am going to have to postpone the WNTP DX Test until March 15 (Friday night into Saturday morning). Aside from the difficult travel conditions, the other work I needed to do tonight is going to be impossible because I won't be able to get to the towers with the heavy snowfall today and expected ice tonight. Sorry about the short notice. The setup, conditions, and procedures for the DX Test on March 15 will be the same as they would have been tonight. I will not be able to do the test before 3/15 because I leave on 2/28 for England for two weeks (coming home on 3/13). 73, Rene' Rene F. Just a note to let everyone know that Saul and I are working on processing the CFFX QSL cards. [IRCA] OT: Tornado photos
Some of you on the various lists were kind enough to e-mail and check on me following the terrible tornadoes we had here in Tennessee and surrounding states last week. In my day job I am a civilian public affairs specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers here in Memphis. One of my duties is to produce our weekly online employee newsletter. Last week I published several photos taken of storm damage at Union University, about an hour's drive northwest of Memphis. This link will take you to one of these photos, plus clicking on the link at the bottom of the page will take you to several additional photos. I thought perhaps some on the lists would find these photos of interest ... especially folks who live where tornadoes are not a menace. Thankfully, no one died or was seriously injured at Union University. Sorry to trouble anyone on the lists who may not be interested. Re: [IRCA] CFFX QSL follow-up
This info was and still is on the www.dxtests.info website Konnie. It was posted 1/10/08. This is your best source for news on tests. Please check it regularly for updates. Additional info regarding CFFX DX Test The BTCs Canadian Connection Saul Chernos and I have been working out some of the details on programming and QSLs for this test with chief engineer Roger Cole. To begin with, here are the basics: CFFX 960 kHz Kingston, ON DX Test DATE: Early morning of Tuesday January 15 (Monday night). MODE OF OPERATION: CFFX will test using its 10,000-watt daytime directional pattern. PROGRAMMING: Regular adult contemporary programming. Special test material will consists of three hourly voice announcements followed by special test material lasting several minutes. These will air roughly at the top of the hour, at approximately , 0100 and 0200 EST, give or take a few minutes depending on the program log. Here is what weve worked out on QSLs For those DXers who seek a traditional paper QSL card, please send your reception report, recording (mp3/wav on disk or cassette OK) directly to Saul at the following address: Saul Chernos 57 Berkeley St. Toronto, ON M5A 2W5 CANADA Regarding return postage, be sure to go with one of these options: 1. You may send Canadian stamps in an amount sufficient to cover postage from there to your location. For Canada to the U.S., I believe it is 93¢ Canadian. 2. Send $1 U.S. to cover return postage costs. 3. DXers hearing the test outside of Canada and the U.S. may send 1 Euro. And DXers anywhere can send 1 IRC to cover return postage costs. If none of these options will work for you, please contact me via e-mail and well work something out. Saul will work with Mr. Cole to review reports, issue and mail QSL cards, etc. For those DXers who are happy with an eQSL, please send your reception report and/or recording in either mp3 or wav format to both Saul and Mr. Cole. Their e-mail addresses are respectively: schernos[at]sympatico.ca roger.cole[at]corusent.com I hope this covers everything, but if you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask. [IRCA] WNTP 990 kHz Philadelphia, PA DX Test
WNTP 990 kHz Philadelphia, PA DX Test Date: Saturday morning (late Friday night), Feb. 23, 2008. Time: Midnight -1 a.m. Eastern Time, 0500 0600 UTC. From midnight until 12:30 a.m. the station will test with their new daytime pattern and 50 KW power. From 12:30 until 1 a.m. they will test with their non-directional pattern and 12.5 KW power. Previous non-directional tests have been conducted at 5 KW, and this higher power should give more listeners a chance to hear this station. Well especially be running a lot of sweep tones since they seem to get the best results. Morse IDs, steady 2 kHz tones, and some odd ball music which I have yet to pick, says Chief Engineer and DXer René Tetro. Reception reports may be sent to René at WNTP, 117 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444. E-mail reception reports may also be submitted to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If sending an audio recording, I prefer CD or mp3 (MP3s can be an attachment to an e-mail, provided the size doesnt exceed 3-4 mb), René adds. No eQSL service is being offered for this test. This is the fourth year in a row that René will conduct a test over WNTP, but this higher transmitter power opens up lots of new possibilities. NOTE: All requests for verifications must be accompanied by return postage in order to receive a reply. Many thanks to René for his great support over the years to DXers and our hobby, and in particular for conducting this test. [IRCA] CFFX DX Test Final Report
CFFX DX Test Final Report Wow! What a good test this turned out to be. In spite of marginal conditions, the last few hours of CFFX on 960 kHz made it to both the east and west coast and even to Scotland. Only the southwest and the deep south appear to have been left out. A look at the CFFX daytime pattern explains why - a pretty significant null toward the south. As with the KKMO test, the CFFX test was heard in Europe. Special congratulations this time go to Paul Crankshaw in Troon Scotland, who caught a couple Morse code IDs. The test also made it to the North American west coast. Without further ado, here is the lengthy list of those who logged the swan song of CFFX-AM: Konnie Rychalsky - Southwestern CT Dave Lang - Waterford CT Curtis Sadowski - Paxton IL Tom Jasinski - Shorewood IL Frank Zane - Downers Grove (Chicago) IL Mark Connelly - Billerica MA Joe Miller - Southeastern MI George Sherman - MN Paul LaFreniere - Grand Marais MN Joe Wozniak - St. Louis MO Dave Hockfelder - Albany NY Stephen Howe - Albany NY Ken Chatterton - Mannville NY Jerry Bond - Rochester NY Scott Fybush - Suffern NY Joe Perge - Newark OH Patrick Martin - Seaside OR Brett Saylor - State College PA Steve Francis - Alcoa, TN Jim Pogue, Memphis TN Kevin Satya - Bainbridge Island WA Bill Dvorak - Madison WI Tim Noonan - Oak Creek WI Nigel Pimblett - Dunmore AB Nick Hall-Patch, Victoria BC Walter Salmaniw - Victoria BC Saul Chernos - Burnt River ON Jeff Falconer - Clinton ON Robert Ross - London ON Mark Gerwlivch - Markham ON Mike Brooker - Toronto ON Niel Wolfish - Toronto ON Barry McLarnon - Ottawa ON Paul Crankshaw - Troon, Scotland Steve Whitt - Scotland Sometimes the Internet is a key ally. Frank Schuettig in Bali, Indonesia tuned in this test remotely via a DX Tuner in Illinois. The international aspect our tests are taking on is great, and we encourage more of our European compatriots to give future tests a try. Even if you weren't able to hear the test, we send a big thank-you to those who tried and continue to support our efforts, including: Bill Block-AZ, Frank Aden-ID, Bob Foxworth-FL, Tim Hall-CA, Steve Ratzlaff-OR, Martin Foltz-CA, Fred Nordquist-SC, Patrick Griffith-CO, J.D. Stephens-AL, Bruce Winkelman-OK, Bruce Portzer-WA, Barry Davies in the UK and Bjarne Mjelde in Berlevag (Arctic Norway) who heard CFAC and KMA but not CFFX. After a very brief dry spell, we've added a couple of more tests to the calendar, plus several more are still very much in the works. Remember to keep checking the DXTESTS.INFO Web site frequently and listen to the BTC Podcasts for news and late-breaking developments. Finally, if you can reach out to one or more stations in your area and encourage them to consider doing a DX test, please do so. Many hands . and all that. Well not quite. There was an entire program on Radio Mossiach and Redemption 1710 devoted to this exact spotter radio matter , whereupon the aging, bearded Rebbe explained that shellfish products are also forbidden. Furthermore, the aging, bearded Rebbe explained that Rabbi Gil must not forget the required seal of approval on the final product to make sure his blessing have been performed according to Talmudic Law. If used for Passover, or Pesach, it must be certiified Kosher for Pesach, though it is generally acknowledged that one needn't pour boiling water over the device, or keep it separate, for passover-use only. There are other ULR alignment minutaie that I heard discussed on 1710 that I won't detail here. But the aging, bearded Rebbe did make it very clear that any and all ultralights must be properly properly aligned, and authentically certified as Kosher, if they are to hear Radio Mossiach and Redemption. And, yes, I have heard this station on my ULR from Burnt River ON. Maybe that makes me the first person to log a pirate. Checking my old 1977 SPEEDX utility Guide, I find Victoria Coastal Radio/VAK in Sooke, BC, with a frequency of 2458 kHz. 1630 seems an unlikely frequency for a coastal station so perhaps you did transcribe it wrong. [IRCA] BTC 2007-2008 Mid-Season Report - Jan. 13, 2008
BTC 2007-2008 Mid-Season Report - Jan. 13, 2008 We are currently at approximately the mid-point of the 2007-2008 medium wave DX season, and it seems like a good time to give you an interim report on the work of your Broadcast Test Committee. As you can probably guess, many hours of work goes into contacting stations, scheduling and arranging tests, and making sure all the loose ends get tied up after the test actually runs. So far this season, the committee has contacted roughly 188 different stations in the United States and Canada with requests for DX tests. The majority of these stations were approached by sending a request package to a specific individual there, and included a detailed letter, a brochure about our hobby, a couple of maps showing the coverage success of some previous tests, copies of the two stories that ran in the local press about the WLPO test and an SASE. The list of stations, compiled by committee member J.D. Stephens, was taken primarily from club bulletins reporting individuals who were good verifiers or who had otherwise demonstrated a friendly attitude toward DXers. From these nearly 200 stations contacted, we received positive responses from 11 stations. Admittedly, not a particularly great return rate, but as most of us know, we are up against a lot of challenges in trying to get stations to test in the current broadcasting environment. In any case, we are very thankful to those stations who have agreed to test for us. One of the goals I set when I took over the position as BTC Coordinator was to use current technology as much as possible to improve the delivery of information to DXers. Committee member Brandon Jordan already had the highly successful and useful DXTests.info Web site up and running, and we have continued to use it to deliver timely and accurate information on tests. Another of our committee members and a decorated veteran of the CPC/BTC arena, J.D. Stephens, has broken new ground with the BTC Podcast. J.D. has done seven of these very informative presentations so far, all in an extremely professional and entertaining manner. Looking ahead to the rest of the season, I am preparing request packages for about another 40 stations. Additionally, a couple of our committee members are working on direct contacts with stations in hopes of scheduling tests by them in the near future. And we are still trying to nail down dates and times with a few other stations who have agreed in principle to test. We'll announce details on all these just as soon as we are able to firm them up. This brings me to a couple of requests I'd like to make of you in the DX community. First, cold call requests for DX tests is just one part of this process. Although we have official members of our committee, I like to think of everyone who listens for the tests as potential ex officio members. So, if you work at a station, if you have a friend or acquaintance who works at a station in your area, or would just like an excuse to meet your local chief engineer or station manager, why not approach them about the possibility of a test? Since station engineering personnel are often hams, if you are also a ham, this may be an area of common interest where your paths cross. If you make an initial contact with a station and they seem interested, please pass the info along to me. I'll be happy to make an official contact with the station and send them a request package. Second, as you can probably imagine, mailing out requests to stations is a somewhat costly enterprise. Each package requires about $1 in postage plus the cost of the stamp for the SASE. In addition to this is the cost of the envelopes used, and paper for printing letters and other items. Contributions of stamps or cash to aid in this work would be very helpful. I'll be happy to send a receipt to anyone who needs one, and will make a full accounting of all contributions and expenditures in my end of the season report. Thanks in advance for any such financial assistance you can provide. The DX test season is now roughly half over. Although we currently only have one additional test on the calendar, please rest assured that your committee is still hard at work. But with numbers comes strength. If you can help get the ball rolling on a test from a station in your area, we gratefully welcome your help. In conclusion, I send my sincere thanks to fellow committee members: J.D. Stephens, Brandon Jordan, Joe Miller, Paul Walker and our newest member Saul Chernos. They each bring special talents and capabilities to our efforts, and I am very honored to work with all of them. Please consider doing your part to open the doors for a test from a station in your area. Working together, I believe we can get many more tests on the calendar, stations in our logbooks and QSLs in our collections. Thanks and 73s, Jim Pogue/KH2AR IRCA

I think that was because work started at 5:00 AM and I would DX before going to work. The months of reception were late Sept. to March of 1980. Re: [IRCA] QSL??? DX test CFFX 960
OK - before this gets any uglier, please let me step in here in my capacity as BTC Chairman. Regarding QSLs for the CFFX test, anyone who receives and reports the test correctly, and wants a paper QSL card will get one. I don't care if you have a computer or not. My goal is to try to accommodate everyone within reason. Some folks want paper, others are OK with cyber. Either way is OK by me. Regarding return postage, I'm not sure if the actual paper QSLs are going to be mailed from Canada or the U.S., but since U.S. currency is good in either country, sending a green stamp should take care of it if the replies come from Canada. Finally, please let's all try to stay civil toward each other. This has long been a hobby of ladies and gentlemen who treated each other with mutual respect. As long as we continue to do this, our hobby will be around (at least in some form) long after we are gone. Thanks for my time on the soapbox. I'll be happy to respond to any questions you may have about the upcoming CFFX test or any other BTC topic. This is not open for discussion.] Anyone can write up something on a computer and say they heard a certain station. Konnie, it is my understanding that _ONLY_ cyber reports are really wanted and all others can go and 'take a long walk off a short dock'. This encludes recodings. IF you have E-mail access, and you and I do, you don't get to do anything in writing. Patrick suggested that since this is a Canada station and they can not use U.S. postage, that we enclose a few coupons to pay the postage. BUT, Saul said that IF you have e-mail you don't get any snail mail QSL. Even if you pay for it. What it comes down to, at lease for me, is the same ole thing -- I don't get a QSL of any kind no matter if I sent money or not. I quit collecting QSL's for this very reason, to much el-crapo over doing things right. It is old story of those have money to buy the equipment get to, and those who don't have money might as well forget. The rich rule! BTW- The amount of work involved in sending out a QSL using snail mail with an enclosed self addressed stamped envelope is no greater than a QSL sent out by cyber el-crapo. [IRCA] KLAA DX Test is all set
I just talked with Brian Clark at KLAA and the DX Test this weekend is all set to go. He said they will run a 30-second chunk of Morse code and sweep tones near the top of the hour, and another shorter version near the bottom of the hour. As a reminder, here is the scoop on the test: Date: Saturday morning (late Friday night), Dec. 15, 2007. Time: 1 2 a.m. Pacific Time, 0900 1000 UTC. Modes of Operation: 20,000 watts using nighttime directional antenna pattern. Programming: Morse code IDs inserted into regular programming. For full details, go to: http://www.dxtests.info/2007/10/klaa-830-anaheim-ca-dx-test.html I'm waiting to hear back from KQMS to confirm that test is a go, and will check with Paul Lotsof at KEVT closer to the end of the week to ensure all is set there. [IRCA] More on the KKMO DX Test
Chief Engineer Monte Passmore has provided a little more info on the format for his upcoming test. He provided some very specific details regarding times, but I have thinned some of this out to try and avoid giving away too much of what to expect. I know 99.99 percent of us are honest about this and I don't mean to offend anyone, but just one unscrupulous DXer could ruin this for all of us, and it HAS happened in the past. Here is the info: I will start with sweep tones followed by a quick station identifier then a tone at 1,000 Hz followed by another station identifier. I will repeat this sequence for ten minutes from 12:00-12:10 am and then follow with college football marching music for three minutes from 12:10am to 12:13am followed by the same station identifier sweep tones and a station identifier to conclude at approx 12:15am. We will then go back to our normal programming. Good luck to all. [IRCA] WCXH DX Test Final Report
WCXH DX Test Final Report Alas, so much of life is about timing. The weekend that the WCXH test was originally scheduled to run had some great indices and propagation conditions, and those lucky enough (and I do mean lucky) to hear the test running later than at the published time heard it quite well. Sadly, the rescheduled test came on the heels of a geomagnetic storm, making the morning still somewhat auroral with elevated A and K indices. Most DXers heard little more than WBBM and an assortment of Spanish language broadcasters, including yours truly. Still, there were those who managed to pull this interesting station from Maine out of the mix. An odd situation has arisen with Morse code heard on 780 kHz in the Northwest, but the signals thus far have not matched up precisely with what closer listeners were hearing. The jury is still out on this one and the guys out west are waiting to hear from Allan Weiner on their inquiries. Here's the list of listeners who have indicated positive or tentative reception: Jim Chenard Blairstown, NJ Saul ChernosBurnt River, ON, Canada Marc DeLorenzo South Dennis, MA Michael Diers Huntington Station, NY Russ EdmundsBlue Bell, PA Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC, Canada Bill Harms Elkridge, MD Patrick Martin Seaside, OR Barry McLarnon Ottawa, ON, Canada Bruce Portzer Seattle, WA Walt Salmaniw Victoria, BC, Canada George Santulli Lovettsville, VA Brett SaylorCentral PA John Sgrulletta Mahopac, NY As I alluded to earlier, most of the guys on the West Coast reported tentative reception. If we get any clarification on their results I'll include that info in a future report. A great big thank you goes out to Allan Weiner for the great test. Perhaps we can persuade him to run another test this season with hopes for better propagation conditions. Thanks also to everyone who tried for the test, and congratulations to those who logged it. We continue to receive positive responses to our requests for tests. Be sure to check the DXTESTS.INFO Web site frequently and listen to the BTC Podcasts for news and late-breaking developments. [IRCA] WCXH DX Test
I just got back into town and am catching up on e-mails. If you haven't already posted or e-mailed me your results regarding the WCXH Test, please do so ASAP. I'll be putting together my final report soon - probably tomorrow. So far it looks like the U.S. east coast, Ontario and the Northwest were the best places to hear Maine from this time. I'm still reviewing my recording here ... there are a couple of possibilities but it's probably going to be a long shot. I was DXing from Paducah, KY with just my ICF-2010 barefoot. Still, stranger things have happened. Anyway, please send me your results if you haven't already. BTW, before leaving town on Friday I got a positive reply from WIMA in Lima, Ohio for a DX Test. They will be testing for us on January 5, 2008. More on that soon. Also, it looks as though we will have a test from at least one Canadian station that is leaving AM this season. As soon as the details are worked on we'll release the info on that too. 73s, Jim Pogue IRCA/NRC Joint Broadcast Test Committee Coordinator Memphis, TN ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Poor Excuses kill this hobby
, adequatly helps the hobby. A fish is a fish, a worm is a worm, and a QSL is a QSL. As for these days one of the problems of receiving less than a QSL just may be found in your response. Maybe instead of a stamp, each DXer can send in a dollar, and with the $10 - $20, you can supply the station with a gift...uh, QSL cards!! about 100 worth. You will have left the hobby a better place than you found it. Then, dxers will be gratefull to you and the IRCA for making a difference. What is the IRCA for anyway? And coming from a Ham radio operator God, that was simple. People, stop settling for less, and poor excuses. Get involved in your hobby! Stop looking for what you can get, and add selfishly to a raggetty old shoe box full of mold and mildew stuck in a closet that won't see light for another ten years... and starting looking on how to give to others, including an education on what a QSL really is, and supply them. There needs to be a serious attitude shift here. That should start the keyboards clicking, eh? The days of insisting upon a full data verification with date, time, frequency, power, etc., and an unambiguous your reception is verified statement or the like are gone. Re: [IRCA] QSL from WIGG 1420 for DX TEST
Folks, I gotta say, any time you get a response from a station these days and the intent is to verify your reception, you need to be grateful. I am certain that this was the intent by WIGG. The days of insisting upon a full data verification with date, time, frequency, power, etc., and an unambiguous your reception is verified statement or the like are gone. In a word, no, not all stations are aware of what constitutes what we DXers would categorize as a full data QSL. And I'm not about to try and launch an education program. Again, we are lucky to get the test and a snail-mail response to our reception reports at all. [IRCA] Seeking portable antenna suggestions
I just acquired an Eton E1XM and am thus far quite impressed with it. However, since it does not have an internal ferrite rod antenna like my venerable ICF-2010, I need to find a compact, outboard, rotatable antenna for portable use on the BCB (and also on the NDB/LW band too, if such a critter exists). [IRCA] WFAW DX Test Final Report
WFAW DX Test Final Report I think we have the majority of reports in, and many DXers were able to overcome the challenges presented low power with a rather crowded channel and put WFAW into their logs. He was very happy with the results, and just informed me that he has gotten the OK to conduct a test over another station he works for: WRDB - 1400 kHz in Reedsburg, WI. This test on a local channel is going to be a real challenge. But those of you who have been at this for awhile know that some of our best DX tests have come from stations on the graveyard frequencies. Thanks to everyone who tried for the test, and congratulations to those who logged it. Ernie promises a nice QSL package, so get those reports in to him soon. We should have details on a test from a Virginia station put together soon, plus Ernie has several other stations in the upper Midwest that are good possibilities. [IRCA] WFAW DX Test - initial report
The first reports on last night's DX Test from WFAW are coming in. It looks as though lots of their signal was going north and south, and most of the more distant listeners - including yours truly - heard on Morse code and sweep tones. Those a little closer to the station heard some of their interesting programming, including special music and PSAs for amateur radio. Thanks to Ernie Swanson for running this challenging, relatively low power test, and to everyone who listened. Please keep those e-mails coming, and I'll publish a final report in a couple of days. I have actually copied several similar stations on 506, including one with the same calls but /6. I have also had a few variations outside those parameters. * What are these stations, and is there a comprehensive list of who's who? (It's awfully hard for a morse code neophyte like me to copy the code when there are multiple stations on the same frequency with very close to the same ID. They often overlap, causing the ears at this end to emit their own code, of sorts). * I had one set of the same calls with /6 prceded by CQ, which I take to be a common ham term for 'calling' ... but there was what I believe was a 'z' in between. * I also had HHH preceding yet another unID set of calls. [IRCA] WIGG DX Test report
The results are in from the WIGG test last weekend. It looks like 1420 kHz was a tough frequency for many of us, but the test still made it out fairly well to the Midwest, the South and somewhat to the East. Bill Dvorak in Madison, WI says that after a careful review of his tapes he picked out some 1,000 Hz tones and several Morse code IDs from the test. Up the road in Oak Creek, WI Tim Noonan reports, I did hear the WIGG test - not very strong, but definite WIGG code. Over in Taylors, SC, Chris Johnson says he had to dodge QRM from WHK, WKSR and WVOT in order to pull out some Morse IDs and a long tone. Taking advantage of the advertised phone number, Tom Jasinski in Shorewood, IL called and spoke with CE Paul Turner during the test. Tom copied code and tones through QRM from WHK and WVJS. Bill Philco Bill Harms in Elkridge, MD says, Got it! Clear Morse code ID . lots of WHK and WVOT. In St. Louis, MO Joe Woz Wozniak had trouble posting his results to the IRCA list on Sunday morning but no trouble hearing WIGG in spite of QRM from WOC, KTOE and co-channel local WIRL. Not too far from Woz, Curtis Sadowski in Paxton, IL says Hearing tones, code and music from WIGG AM 1420 DX test. The channel is crowded, but it's coming through well enough to be distinguished. Brett Saylor in Central Pennsylvania says 1420 sounded more like a graveyard to him at times, but he still pulled out some tones and CW to add another Mississippi station to his log thanks to WIGG. In Alcoa, TN, Steve Francis reports Floyd Cramer music along with tones and Morse code all combined to bring WIGG's signal into his shack, not heard since March 26, 1971, probably on a frequency check. To the south, J.D. Stephens in Hampton Cove, AL (near Huntsville) says he had good copy of the WIGG test. And your BTC Coordinator - Jim Pogue - visiting family in Durham, NC logged some tones and a Morse code ID, plus had a brief phone conversation with Paul during the test. And finally, I got one e-mail (which I mistakenly deleted) from a DXer in Australia who said he heard some of the test via a recently reestablished DX Tuner in Florida! Now the bad news: Lots of folks tried but were unable to hear the test due primarily to high QRM levels. These included Walt Salmaniw in Victoria, BC, Canada, Saul in Brunt River, ON, Canada, and Barry McLarnon in Ottawa, ON, Canada, who copied a mush of WHK, WACK, WBEC and WBSM but no WIGG. Others trying for the test were Jim Renfrew in Holley, NY, Rich Brock near Pittsburgh, PA, Mike Stonebridge in St. Isidore, AB, Canada, Phil Bytheway in Seattle, WA, Patrick Martin in Seaside, OR, Jerry Ervine in McAllen, TX who had lots of Radio Formula but no WIGG, and Paul Walker in SC. Thanks to everyone who tried for the test, and congratulations to those who logged it. We still have several more tests in the works in addition to those which have already been announced, plus another whole slug of requests to go out.
