I'm considering asking FS if they would mind placing a download button
for FS cast since I'm the kind of a guy who listens to pod casts at a
time of my own choosing and not really when I fire up my system first
thing in the morning.

Unless Eric reads this himself before I get around to writing that
message at least. What do some of you out there think about that
suggestion?

I agree, and have only observed this issue among blind computer users. I work
with sighted computer users, and when they have problems, they ask someone and
someone helps them. I have never heard some of the snarky comments that I read

The list philosophy does seem to be try first, then ask, but this is different.
Any article you find online, and definitely anything I publish online, contains
a link to the webpage where each quotation or other documentary support is to
be found. Why this insistence that blind computer users go to the extra trouble
of finding a link when someone has already done so? I appreciate Mike B's
practice of saving us time after he's gone and found FS download links, and in
the past I've done the same when he hasn't gotten around to it. Time matters.

Follow the information that the F S web site gives you.
A user of the Jaws program needs to know how to use the Freedom Scientific web

If everyone keeps giving them the links, they will not learn how to use the

For a person just starting out, I can see helping them, by emailing them the

But I see the same people asking for the Jaws links year after year, this is

Please learn how to use the freedom scientific web site for your own good.

Re: [JAWS-Users] gwx Control panel
Anna,

If you have difficulty installing the program after saving it, try to
notice when and where the problem arises. You could post the
explanation, and I'm sure someone would have a good answer. I can think
of lots of reasons why you could have difficulty, beginning with the
"save" process to locating the file in the download folder to knowing if
it's an executable file. I don't want to speculate because this post
would get very long.

FYI, it's my understanding that people prefer to save online files
rather than run them for two reasons. Andy gave you one-the ability to
use it again.
The other is that people sometimes encounter problems when running from
an online site. My own practice various according to the website and my
plans.
I will run an Acrobat Reader update from the website because it will be
easy to find again and installation always goes smoothly. However, I
save current JAWS releases because I'll need the current one if I ever
have to do a repair. Also, some JAWS releases have introduced new
problems, and if that happens, I'll want to revert to the previous
version that worked fine.

In general, to do a clean install of an antivirus program you need to
download and run a removal tool from that program's web site. Of course,
they don't want you to remove their product, so they don't make the
process easy. For example, you may have to solve a CAPTCHA to access or
run the tool.

For some of us using the update function as intended works just fine and is
more convenient, only once since introduced did I need the real executable file
later and that was early in the program.

Do it the way you want but to insist others do it your way is not helping. If
Freedom meant for everyone to grab the executable they would never have given
us the update option. I don't recall when it came into life but needing to go
after the executable in all the upgrades that have been offered in each version
of JAWS says the update works for many of us.

Just saying!

Hi,
I always download the new JAWS executable file and save it on my computer and

problems later. Just updating it usually causes problems later for me.

Hi Dacia,

Have you tried rebooting to see if that helps? If you reboot & your system
comes up running normally, try downloading J17 using the links I provided
earlier, & running that update installation file from your computer. Some
people have good luck updating with the Jaws updater, & others do not. Or,
even with your computer acting weird, if you can download the previously
mentioned installation executable & running it, that might clear up your
troubles.
Take care.

Hi, I asked this in a previous email, but thought I'd ask it again here. The
option to update just came on my computer, so I chose to do so. However, it
said that it couldn't update the patch. And I hit OK. Once I did that, my
computer has not let me navigate things. It talks, and will let me hit
letters, but it's not navigating to anything on my computer. Any
suggestions? Should I uninstall it completely and reinstall just the
original Joss 17 cd I got in not do the updates?

This is exactly why I continue to be so disturbed by this entire
scenario.

I can assure you that if the "get windows 10" notification re-appears on
my computer, the Microsoft Accessibility Support line will get another
call from me, and I will not be happy.

I always teach my studednts and my children to choose their battles, but
this is a battle that I feel must be engaged in.

I find it totally un-acceptable not to have the complete and free choice
of whether or not to install an operating system, or any software
program for that matter. And, to be constantly harassed if you do not
is totally un called-for.

I just got off of the phone with the Microsoft Accessibility support
line.
I can't say that I am as happy as the rest of you have been with the
assistance I received. Before beginning to remote into my computer, he
tried every way possible to convince me to let him install Windows10.
Maybe he just did not understand English well. I finally had to ask to
speak to a supervisor or manager, and he then agreed to do what I was
asking.

When he was done, I asked him to review what he had done. He told me
that he hid the Windows10 installation icon. I asked how long will the
icon stay hidden and he said for a few days. I told him that I wanted
it removed completely from my computer and he said that there is no way
to do that, and that I will be happier in a few days if I would call
back and have them install windows10 for me.

So on the positive side , I will not be annoyed by the Windows10 update
window for a few days.

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10"
message re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this
afternoon.

Admittedly, I did not install the GWX control panel program software
that a few had suggested, because I was a little leary of putting new
software on my computer without really knowing what I was doing.

Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created
issue so far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for
assistance.

It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated
files had been installed on my computer in several different locations.
It took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything
properly uninstalled and operating as it should.

I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist
was getting frustrated at several points.

I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain
terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer
users who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10"
message, and that I would hope this could somehow be taken into
consideration.

I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation
will not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this
issue to contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it
alone with only frustration as the end result.

At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent
experience.

On some websites I run across buttons I can't click on with space or

I try routing cursors, turning off virtual cursor, left clicking, just

to the next page. I see it a lot on banking sites and on submit or

Due to the configuration of some newer websites with maybe too many

buttons and therefore the inability to complete tasks on these sites
without sighted help? I truly hope there's an answer and that it's not
impossible to use these sites independently.

Thanks.

problem with his approach is that whenever there is a new version of

I use cut and paste for files, but I sometimes run into a situation with
online courses where you have a list of questions and you need to drag

I got this requirement to do that, and can't seem to get it to work.
Cut and Paste isn't an option in this case. When I try to drag .. it
either doesn't do anything or comes back and tells me the object isn't

It's possible that we're mixing upgrades with SMAs. If you fall behind in JAWS

I think this is probably not so simple any more like it was for XP, 7,
and 8. Even if 10 is to be the last version of Windows, it will be
updated on a faster scale than ever before. This has the potential to
break accessibility in a way that the current version of Jaws, or any
screen reader, may not handle well if left forever on an old version.

this is what FS responded
If you purchased the SMA with the JAWS screen reading software version 16.0
release, it will enable you to obtain the next release or the next two releases
depending on the SMA you purchased. Therefore, if your SMA will allow you to
obtain the JAWS 17.0 release and the JAWS 18.0 release if this is the
following release after JAWS 17.0. If you have a SMA for the nenxt release that
enable you to get JAWS 17, you can’t not use JAWS 17 and use JAWS 18.0 for your
SMA.

so I guess there are many types of SMAs that can be purchased, you need to ask
about which one is best for your needs!

Not true. Somebody on another list reported updating from Windows 7 to
Windows 10 only to discover that his printer would not work. He
visited the manufacturer's web site to try to locate Windows 10 drivers
for his model, but could not find any. And he could not find any
third-party Windows 10 drivers for his particular printer, either. So
he was forced to roll back to Windows 7, which was a better alternative
than sticking with Windows 10 and throwing his perfectly good printer in
the garbage and having to buy a new one. Apparently Windows 7 drivers
may not necessarily be compatible with Windows 10 for some printers and
scanners. So you cannot assume that just because a printer works with
Windows 7 it will also work with Windows 10.

Hi Gerald,
I have not heard one person complain about their printer or any other
things such as scanners not working when upgrading to w-10.
Any of your products that work in w-7, should work in w-10.
Take your time, and do research about these things yourself.
Don't freak out, or get overly worried about W-10, Seriously, Windows 10
works great with Jaws.

Another issue to consider before upgrading to Windows 10 is peripheral
device compatibility. Are Windows 10 drivers available for your printer
or
scanner? If not, then you may have to buy a new one and throw out the
old
one even though it still works perfectly well with Windows 7 but may not
work with Windows 10 unless you can find compatible drivers for it. But
buying a new printer or scanner may also be problematic because many of
them, especially all-in-one models often have display screens whose menu
options are totally inaccessible without sighted assistance.

Thanks again, and thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.

The disadvantage to doing that is that you are potentially allowing
software such as malware to download and install without you knowing it.
Having yourself as a limited user is less convenient, but it provides an
additional level of security.

Hi Gerald,

Anyone who is concerned about unintentionally installing promotional
software may be interested in trying Unchecky.

http://unchecky.com/

It runs in the background as a service and monitors for recognized
installers. It then automatically unchecks any checkboxes related to
installing toolbars, browsers, and similar unwanted products. I've been
using this little gem for over a year & it hasn't let Google Chrome
install yet, when updating CCleaner!

Take care.

Here we go again. I just installed the latest version of CCleaner,
version
5.9 using the link on the JAWS Users programs page, and inspected each
page
of the installation dialog very carefully with the JAWS cursor to locate
any
surreptitious check boxes for also installing Google Chrome. I could
not
find any, so I went ahead and completed the installation of CCleaner.
But
to my great chagrin, Google Chrome was also installed, anyway, and set
as my
default browser. Just out of curiosity, I took a quick look at Chrome
and
found it to be just as inaccessible with JAWS 15 as it has always been.
So
I had to use Revo Uninstaller to remove it and then reset IE 11 as my
default browser. Has anyone found a foolproof way to prevent Google
Chrome
from being installed along with CCleaner? Thanks.

They might if they come included in Windows, but if they are drivers
that were installed when you installed a device like a printer, and if
they came from the printer manufacturer, you would have to go to the
printer manufacturer's web site, or to some other site that offers

it is not always necessary to update the driver just because one is

I do not know about this site in particular, but I have noticed that
JAWS 16 does not always recognize controls such as check boxes.
Generally when you can't get a button to activate, it's because
something further up the page has not been done, like checking a box or
entering certain info. I had this problem with JAWS and IE 11 on the
ESPN fantasy football site, and it turned out that there was a check box
that neither JAWS or Window Eyes was reading, and I had to get a pair of
eyeballs to check it with the mouse.

HI Steve. When I press F to navigate by form field, JAWS says there are
no more form fields. The form fields only populate when the buttons
populate; if there were a checkbox, JAWS would recognize this as a form
field. I would check the box and tab to the I agree button, but this

HRportal commonly used in job applications

Hello all.

I realize I rarely post on the JAWS users list, but I'm helping a family
member apply for online jobs and have run into an issue with one of the
big online candidate profile sites that I think could be JAWS related.
The issue is with People Answers.

People Answers (http://www.peopleanswers.com) is a Website that
companies use to host online assessments and questionnaires for job
candidates. When I log in to the site to begin a job assessment from an
employer using this portal, I'm forwarded to a page asking me to scroll
through an agreement and click I Agree to except it. When I scroll
through the agreement, JAWS reads, I Agree button unavailable and I
do not agree unavailable. The sighted person I'm working with says the
button is grayed out, and she can't click on I Agree.

I've scrolled through the entire agreement at least three times this
evening using Internet Explorer; I also tried this page under Mozilla
Firefox with the same result. I've had similar issues with this portal
in the past. So far, I've only gotten this button to populate correctly
twice, and both times it's taken me an hour to scroll through the
information on the agreement multiple times.

The agreement itself consists of two sections: a privacy statement and
terms of use. Both have separate links to allow you to open and print
the privacy statement and terms of service, then close the page to
return to the application. I've had to open and close the page multiple
times to get the I agree buttons to populate correctly. This evening,
I was unable to do so at all after scrolling to the bottom of the page
at least three times under Internet Explorer 11 and once under Mozilla
Firefox 40. I'm using JAWS 16, build 4350 with a 64-bit PC running
Windows 10.

I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with this online job portal and
has any solutions to this.

Thanks in advance.

Chris.

You may believe it is perfect, I never expected iTunes to cook my

occasionally.

I'd like to see what I wish to see when I open the program instead of
having to tab through a ton of places that I will never use on the
computer, I listen to music using my iPhone and speakers, not the
computer. I do, however, wish to get most updates on the computer, and
I do wish to have backups in iCloud and on my computer, occasionally,
usually weekly at least and I did prefer to remove applications I was no
longer using the computer, which is now more convoluted than it was.
If it were not for the syncing capability and the backups, I'd probably
never connect the phone to a computer.
As to the search capability, it seems broken to me and any time I can
use a real keyboard to type something in I am more satisfied, I can use
the phone but I still prefer a keyboard with good key travel and size.
Stop treating me like a moron because I don't see things the same way
you do Please! We should be able to disagree without putting one
another down.

Personally I don't see any difference in the latest iTunes update, it
is
still clunky and so far as I can tell there is no way into the app
store
to
perform a search. I still have to press way too many tabs, and F6 for
me
rotates between about three different things, none of which I
generally
want
  to see.
I use it mostly for backups and until 12 for searches. I still think
it
could be improved with keystrokes to get you out of music and into
what
one
really wants to see, in my case, battery status when phone is plugged
in,
ability to know if there are updates, info on last backup and ability
to
perform them, and search like we had in 11 that went directly to the
app
store and where we could type in a phrase and see reasonable results.
In
other words, I want my side bar and my apps that show up in a list ...
but
that is too much to ask, the keep making accessibility worse and more
worse
  in my humble opinion.

Apple Music also is still as confusing as ever, especially the FOR YOU
tab.
Makes absolutely no sense and it never seem to remain after you
attempt to
select what you like or love and never deletes what you do not like.

Come on Apple, stop breaking things, or leave a help guide to explain
  things.
It is 110 degrees here, I am already too hot.
  Yes, phone is updated also.

a lower price. I think the service costs about $100 per season. Not
good! I hope that at least the NFL won't continue to crack down on radio
stations who want to stream their games themselves.

I've been trying to figure out why I did not get my automatic
subscription for NFL Audio Pass for 2015. I really enjoyed being able to
listen to Home and Away team broadcast. The price ($29.99) was right on
too. The website was very user friendly with jaws also. Well I emailed
NFL.com and got the following reply.

Thank you for contacting NFL Audio Pass support. NFL Audio Pass is no
longer available for purchase, and the service has been discontinued.
There will
be no further renewals going forward. The content offered through NFL
Audio Pass is now available through NFL Game Pass. You can visit the
page below for more information on that service.

Your first tip is well worth considering. As for disabling Flash, it depends on
what you do. I visit many sites that offer video presentations using flash.
Also, if you use your PC for online training of any kind, you will need to have
Flash enabled.

Just a thought. Kim Komando recommends using a standard user profile for
your regular one. It is safer since no software can be slipped onto your PC
since doing so requires the administrator password to be entered. This is
much safer than using an administrative profile for your regular work.
I am a super cautious computer user and have both Vipre and Webroot
Security on my Win 7 laptop. Another tip of hers I followed is to turn off
Flash in IE and Firefox. Flash has to request permission to run and it is
very seldom necessary.

Hi Kevin,

If you are running Windows 8.1, tAdding a enew user has to be done by
selecting Settings from the charms bar, then Change PC Settings. Now select
Accounts, and then Other Accounts. Select Add and follow the prompts to
create your new account.

To make the new account the administrator, highlight the account name, and
change the account type from the account type drop down menu.

To remove the old account, highlight the account that you want to remove,
then tab around until you find the Remove button and click this.

All of these steps are done from the Other Accounts window found through the
settings charm as described above. If you have any other questions, just
post them, hth.

I agree with these comments, but do not like the idea of paying big

This bucks the trend of making accessibility cheaper. Now, if it were

Hi,

Leasey is an 'acronym' compiled from: Learn Enable Advance - So Easy.
It's a
program in two editions: The Basic package, and the Advanced package.
The
Basic edition is mainly for complete computer beginners. Leasey works
only
with JAWS. The Leasey Basic package costs more, and does more in that it

speaks additional help dialogue prompts in a female voice . The Advanced

Package adds some additional functionalities to JAWS, and workd from the

keyboard. Thus, the Advanced Package is rather like a set of scripts
that do
additional things - in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Facebook,
Chicken
Nugget, Winamp, Foobar2000, and some more programs.

Before you buy, there is an evaluation version the potential user could
try.
I tried the evaluation of the Advanced package. I decided that Leasey is
not
for me at least for now. Other users may react more favourably. I happen
to
believe that one thing the user should be able to do, particularly if
s/he
is an advanced user, is disable Leasey while running the version of JAWS
it
was installed in. From my reading of the documentation, one cannot do
that.
If one does want to disable it, one has to either uninstall it or use a
version of JAWS that Leasey was not installed into.

Just to reiterate: There are good things about Leasey. But it may not be
for
all users. It will suit some very well.

Keep in mind that because Leasey is based on JAWS scripts, whenever
there is a major JAWS upgrade the program will be broken until he
updates it. This can also happen if the programs that it supports are
upgraded, such as a new version of MS Word, etc. I believe that he
charges for periodic updates, so this will be another ongoing expense.

After I installed the latest JFW 16.0.3048 I hear a string like this
when I
home up to the beginning of a message in Outlook Express:

Edit mhtml:{4383C9D8-43B0-4FDF-9351-F21AA1964515}mid://0014/

It also speaks when I first tab to the message body from the subject
line.
This did not happen with the previous JFW 16.0 build, and I checked with
JFW

This string is different for each message created whether new from

Any one else hearing something like this if you use OE in Windows 7?

I find WLM to be similar in many respects to OE, but I could say the
same for the Email component of Outlook. OE and Outlook both allow for

Re: [JAWS-Users] [EXTERNAL] Opinions: Windows Live Mail or Outlook 2010

2015-06-03 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
If the person is just wanting to do Email at home, WLM is more than up
to the job. However if the person already has MS Office, then he or she
has a choice. I think that the user experience for WLM and the Email
component of outlook is very similar once you get Outlook configured. In
fact, in some respects it is easier. One example is that first letter
navitgation does not work in WLM for navigating among folders or moving
messages among folders, but it does in Outlook. Another advantage is
that you can sync your Outlook Emails with Email on a smart phone or
tablet. I believe that this also works for calendars and contact lists.
One thing that is easier in WLM is to save the senders of Email messages
into your contacts.

There is no difference in terms of features. JAWS Professional is meant
for the work or corporate environment. You save money by using Home
because the SMA is less expensive. If you are using JAWS at home, you

When on the rare occasion I have deleted the history, and then tried
to log back into my bank, I get a pop up from the bank that basically is
trying to id my computer since the cookie has been removed. I have done
all the necessary steps to register my computer for the bank, and this
works just fine as long as I do not remove the IE history.

So my question is, how can I delete IE history and still keep at least
my banks cookie? Is there any way this can be done?

  I am using..

I just spoke to my credit union bank about the fact that when I delete
the IE history, it also removes cookies that my bank requires I have in
order to id my computer.

When on the rare occasion I have deleted the history, and then tried to
log back into my bank, I get a pop up from the bank that basically is
trying to id my computer since the cookie has been removed. I have done
all the necessary steps to register my computer for the bank, and this
works just fine as long as I do not remove the IE history.

So my question is, how can I delete IE history and still keep at least
my banks cookie? Is there any way this can be done?

I am using..

IE 10, OS/7, and J/16

Thanks for any help!

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [JAWS-Users] Major Outlook 2010 Problem

Hello, everyone.

You may remember that, last week, I posted a quiry to the list regarding
an increasingly sluggish Windows 7 desktop computer with Jaws, to the
point that it became unusable.

I originally thought the problem related to some sort of a virus I had
gotten, since it seemed that something in internet explorer was
constantly running.

I think that might have been part of the problem, but after taking the
computer to a local computer repair shop, it seems that the biggest
problem is with Outlook 2010.

I am not sure how he found this out, but the computer repair person
indicated that my Outlook data file is unbelievably huge! It contains
something like 10 gigs of material, and is constantly running, and
trying to refresh itself.

I access both my work and personal g-mail accounts via Outlook 2010, and
am very good at deleting e-mails that are no longer of use to me.

I also periodically check my all mail folder in my personal g-mail
account to be sure that deleted e-mails are not showing up in there.

I guess my question is this: Should I totally un-install Outlook 2010,
and re-install it again? Or, is there some way I can correct this issue
with my currrent version of Outlook 2010?

My University currently uses Office 365, which I know contains a version
of Outlook, so I'm wondering if that might be another way to go.

The computer tech at my local computer repair shop advises me to forget
outlook, and just access my personal g-mail via the g-mail web site, but
I have not had the greatest luck navigating that web site with Jaws 14.
I'm not sure if such an approach would work with my work e-mail account
either.

Any wisdom that can be shed on this issue would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] AFB Creates anAccessible Video Player and Makes It
Available As a Free Download

Just the other day I had a problem trying to listen to a video on a web
site. If I can locate the site again I shall give this a whirl.

The American Foundation for the Blind Creates an Accessible Video Player
and
Makes It Available As a Free Download

NEW YORK (May 5, 2015)-Today, the American Foundation for the Blind
(AFB)
made its new, accessible HTML5 embedded video player available as a free

download. The AFB Accessible Player makes it easy for people with vision

loss to play videos online, something that can be fraught with
accessibility
challenges.

People with vision loss need equal access to online videos for school,
work
and entertainment. People who are blind typically use only a keyboard,
but
many current video players are designed for mouse only, with no way to
interact with the controls via the keyboard, said Crista Earl, director
of
AFB Web Services. Other video players have buttons with unlabeled
images,
so people using screen readers and people with low vision can't easily
fast
forward, pause or rewind the video.

The AFB Accessible Player leverages HTML 5 and cascading style sheets
(CSS)
to allow low-vision users to take advantage of websites' high-contrast
color
schemes to select the font sizes and colors they find easiest to read.
The
controls are labeled with text, so they work with any kind of assistive
technology, such as screen-reading software, braille displays and
screen-magnification software, as well as a mouse. The video can be
expanded
to full screen, which is helpful for users with low vision. It can be
used
either as an embedded YouTube player or as a standard player, and the
custom
control layout supports both English and Spanish languages. The player
also
provides fallback options for older browsers. HTML5 is the standard
supported by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which provides
enhanced
functionality for modern websites and helps make the Internet more
accessible.

AFB's own websites are designed for accessibility, and AFB Tech, AFB's
technology division, regularly helps businesses to make their online
presence more user friendly for people with disabilities. Initially, the
AFB

Accessible Player was developed for visitors to the AFB family of
websites,
but because so many developers are looking for specific solutions to
make
their websites accessible, AFB made the decision to share the player
online.

This HTML5 player is unlike anything else currently available, and we
feel
this is a big leap forward for blind and visually impaired users, added

Earl.

As an organization, we are committed to promoting accessibility for
people
who are blind or visually impaired, said Carl R. Augusto, AFB president
and
CEO. We encourage developers to download and use this video player.
With
more than 20 million Americans living with vision loss, a lot of people
could benefit from wide use of this player.

AFB's new HTML5 player is available for download free of charge at

www.afb.org/player.

There is no answer to this issue. Microsoft cannot say why this happens
to some computers, nor can any other technical support group that I have
spoken to about it. The best thing that I found to help the problem is
to get an external hard drive, and move all of my media, documents,
etc., anything that is not required for the computer to operate, to the
external drive.
This greatly increased the amount of free space on my internal drive,
and let the computer run much smoother with less freezes or other
problems. You can pick up a good external drive on Amazon or eBay for a
good price, and a
500 GB drive would probably do for most people.

2015-05-12 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
I would hope by that time that whatever computing devices we are using
will just be accessible, without any need for added products to make
them so. Thus my hope is that eventually there will be no need for a
product like JAWS, or that JAWS will simply be incorporated into the
operating system.

Carolyn, try this, if you can get it going at all. Maneuver over to the
start menu, make sure JAWS is highlighted. Then use the kill command (I
think it's the equivalent of Win-JAWS-F4) to really clear it out. Then,
go the desktop (remember, you should now be focused on the JAWS start
command) and load it again.

Kim, when Jaws goes silent, try one of two things:

 1. Restart Jaws with Insert-WindowsKey+F4 (takes a little time) 2.
Press WindowsKey+U; close the window that had opened, after Jaws
 begins talking.

Recently I began consistently using jaws 16 and I'm seeing some odd
behavior which I wonder if anyone can confirm.

During remote sessions using VPN, jaws 16 frequently goes absolutely
silent for minutes at a time. Occasionally speech will return if I
wait long enough, but often I have to reboot the computer before I am
 able to regain speech.

This same behavior would sometimes occur with older versions of jaws
(prior to jaws 15), but then it seemed to be fixed.

I work from home several days a week, signed on to my desktop at work
and these frequent silences are very disruptive, not to mention the
reboots. Has anyone else seen this behavior with jaws 16? I intended
to report it to FS, but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it
seems to happen randomly without regard to what application I may be
 using at the time.

 Thanks,
 Kim

Re: [JAWS-Users] [EXTERNAL] free accessible driver update program

2015-05-06 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
I have not tried a driver update program in a while, but the ones that I
have tried have either been inaccessible, or have not rendered the
latest driver. Many drivers can be updated from within Windows Device
Manager, or you can always be sure of getting the latest driver by going
to the manufacturer's web site. A little more work, but worth it.
Actually, my philosophy is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There
are times when a new driver may improve performance, but often this is
not the case, and sometimes a new driver can actually cause problems.

What's new in this release:

Enhancements in JAWS 16.0.2339 (April 2015)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 16 release
on April 9, 2015, and the April 29, 2015 update.

To download the latest release, visit the Downloads web page.

JAWS
.For customers who use JAWS 16 and MAGic 13 together, we resolved an
issue that was discovered in the previous update where MAGic's Mouse
Echo feature was not working as expected when JAWS 16 was running.
.Worked with Smarter Balance Testing group in order to make some
adjustments in how JAWS is working with the tests being conducted in
many of the schools throughout the US.
.In addition to detecting math that is rendered using MathJax in
Internet Explorer, JAWS now detects Math content that is directly
included in the HTML of a web page in both Internet Explorer and
Firefox.
.The contents of the Math Viewer are now displayed visually on the
screen.
The Math Viewer is accessed by pressing ENTER when JAWS encounters math
content on a web page. As the equation is navigated using the ARROW
keys, each expression or partial expression is highlighted so a sighted
assistant can easily track visually, what JAWS is speaking.
.Based on customer feedback, JAWS is now much more responsive when
reading long and complex mathematical expressions rendered by MathJax.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not recognizing math content
in Internet Explorer on Wikipedia when the Wikipedia user account was
set to render math using MathJax.
.Improved how JAWS pronounces various mathematical functions so they are
spoken using more natural language.
.The Technology News from CNET Research It lookup source now works as it
did in JAWS 15, displaying as many as 20 articles.
.If both JAWS and MAGic are running, resolved an issue where pressing
the Text Viewer toggle key on the MAGic Keyboard was not working.
.Resolved reported issues using the Find feature (CTRL+F) in FSReader.
.A customer reported that if focus was in a Windows security dialog and
speech was off, braille was not working as expected and JAWS was
creating several untitled voice profiles. This is now fixed.

Microsoft Excel
.When focused in the Font edit combo box, addressed a reported issue
where the location of the cursor was not being shown in braille.
.Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not reading the list of column
headers in the Sort dialog box.
.Addressed an issue where information was not being displayed correctly
in braille in certain spreadsheets when the braille mode was set to
Current Row.
.Addressed a reported issue with suggestions in the spell checker not
being read as expected.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
.If you are inside an application region on a web page in both Internet
Explorer and Firefox, it is now necessary to press the PC cursor command
(NUM PAD PLUS) twice quickly to turn off Forms mode and return to the
Virtual PC cursor. This change was made to keep users from inadvertently
leaving Forms mode while interacting with controls inside application
regions which require Forms mode remain active and is similar to having
to press the PC cursor command twice quickly to turn off the Touch
cursor.
.Resolved issues with JAWS reading links and other content on web pages
marked as hidden and not meant to be read by

At least here at the VA the Section 508 office is understaffed and

Hmm. This is an interesting viewpoint. However, I would suspect that if

Good Morning,

Discover Technology has also approached my Federal Department. Due to
funding, only one of the Agencies has monies to purchase Discover 508.
I agree it is a good product and the usability makes life much simpler
for a person using adaptive technology, but why should additional money
be used to make a product accessible?

I believe the fix is for Microsoft to make their product accessible.

Hi all,
I never post here, but I joined this list a long time ago. I have a
question. I'm testing the accessibility of a web site on Microsoft Share
Point. I know it isn't completely accessible, but I wanted to know if
there was anything I could do to accurately test it for accessibility
using Jaws 15. I test for accessibility according to the standards
listed in section
508 of the Federal Rehabilitation act.
I look forward to any suggestions/recommendations you can provide.
Thank you,

When I want to send an email to more than one recipient I fill in one name in
the to field and then tab to the CC field. I start typing in the first name of
the person and outlook, announced by jaws, completes the entry. I type in a
semi-colon and start the next name. If I don't want anyone else
to see who I'm sending the email to I put all the names in the BCC field.

Hello list,

So I would like to send an email to multiple recipients, but am not having
success with a certain method. I know I can from within a new email message go
to the to button and look up people to add from my address book, but I find
that to be too tedious and time consuming.

I'm trying to add a bunch of people by first pressing the control button and
then going down my address book with the down arrow and pressing the spacebar
on those who I wish to email. I guess it would be the command for selecting
noncontiguous items in a list. Anyway, After I select the people I wish to
email, I press the control+N command but instead of an email message popping up
with the previously selected contact emails in the to field, I get the prompt
to create a new contact.

I've tried different versions of the same. By selecting my contacts then
tabbing around in the ribbons to select the new mail option and so on, but no
dice.

I got this step by step instruction online, but so far, I've had no luck.

Am I somehow missing a step or can someone enlighten me as to how to best do
this? This is not for distribution lists as I would like to email different
groupings of people at different times.

I'm using Outlook 2010 and the latest Jaws 16.

Thank you,.

The TAB key will put you in the next field.
