[JAWS-Users] Outlook 2010 suddnly slow and crashing all the time
Hello list, Perhaps someone can help me out. I recently got a new Windows 7 Dell with Office 2010 and other than the learning curve of learnign Windows and the new Office, things have been more or less going ok. Today however, Outlook starting getting real buggy on me. Up until now, when deleting an email message, Jaws was right away responsive and would begin to read the next message with no problem. Now however, Jaws will often suffer a prolonged speech delay before going on to the next email. I get over 200 messages a day between mailing lists, business and personal and so on, so one can imagine how exasperating this can become. Also, during the first few days, I didn't have a problem with Outlook, but again, today it started crashing on me and I am getting those Outlook not responding error messages where I'm asked if I want to restart the program or wait until it responds etc. I can't remember doing anything to my system or changing any particular setting so I was wondering if others are in fact dealing with these sort of issues. Like I said, up until today, things have been more or less fine. I am using the latest Jaws 13 release from last week. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW 13 and Outlook 2010 issue
Well, low and behold, I think that's it. I didn't turn the mouse pad off, but rather have made a conscious effort not to rest my wrists on the pc while typing. Don't I feel like a ninny. I was getting incredibly frustrated. I'll probably go and disable the mouse pad though. Are you using a laptop? If so, there is a chance that your thumbs or hands are touching the mouse pad. If the mouse pad is set to click when you lift your finger, you might be accidently moving the mouse. On most laptops there is a way to turn the mouse pad off. Turn JAWS off and have a sighted person use the computer and see if they have the same problem. At some point I had a brand new laptop with the mouse pointer embedded into the keyboard between the G and H keys that had a short in it. You usually have to kill JAWS and restart it. But then you can fix or delete the offending script. Often in a script that needs to loop a few times, I'll put a safety counter in the loop and increment or decrement it and when it hits the limit, get out of the loop immediately. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Bissett, Tom Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2012 12:50 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] scripting Hi, As long as you only alter or create scripts in your personal directory and don't modify anything in the default [all users] directory you won't mess anything up. Re: [JAWS-Users] gw Skype
I noticed whenI had GW Skype installed on my system, I would often not get incoming phone call notices and other sound notifications would also not come up. This was even the case when I had the traditional Skype program running and had the GW Skype application completely off. Calls would go to voice mail, I wouldn't get any ringtone when making a call, etc. I finally uninstalled GW Skype because it dididn't meet my phone calling needs, but ever since then, I haven't had any of the issues mentioned above. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Patti Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 8:20 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] gw Skype Hey Gang, Has anyone been having any problems calling people on GWSkype? Patti Interesting, so if I understand correctly people are complaining about a little advertisement every once in a while. I'm not surprised to be honest. The program works fine and they made it screen reader independent so don't look a gift horse in the mouth as the old saying goes. Hi All, Jaws 13, windows XP home. After installing jaws 13 from the DVD and setting it to load up on start-up I rebooted the computer and it won't load up. Tried restarting a couple of times but it fails to start. However, if I then do the jaws unload keystrokes of alt + F4 followed by enter and use the keys, control + Alt + J it will load up. It acts like jaws is loaded but just not talking. I uninstalled then reinstalled from the download package on the FS web site but still the same behaviour. Re: [JAWS-Users] re-what is the keystroke for copying a link
You can also press the application key or right mouse button on a link and depending on whether you're in Firefox or IE, press enter on the Copy Link Location or Copy Shortcut option. Also, if you're in Firefox, pressing insert+A twice quickly will bring up a window that displays the web address of the page that you're on and that you can copy to your clipboard. This doesn't work in IE though. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Alan Pollard Sent: Friday, November 18, 2011 10:13 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] re-what is the keystroke for copying a link jim,I think it is still,,Alt d.alan - Original Message - From: jim buckeye...@wowway.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2011 12:02 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] re-what is the keystroke for copying a link Thanks Hans: Thats just what I was trying to do. thanks again. [JAWS-Users] Issues with FSreader 2.0
Hello list, Recently I have been having trouble with FSReader and was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same pproblems. I have a folder within my Documents called BookShare books where I keep all the titles Ive downloaded from Bookshare.org. I probably have over 600 titles Ive collected over the years and currently around 20 or so books that I have unzipped. Once I finished reading a book, Ill move it over to a subfolder within the BookShare Books folder called read. Easy enough right? Well, the last few times Ive opened up FSReader and did the whole ctl+o to go to the directory to select a new book (I switch between this foldr and a separate one I have for Newspapers and magazines), the directory doesnt seem to update. Books that I have finished reading and since moved to my read subfolder still appear and new titles that I have since unzipped dont show up at all. Ive tried doing the whole change directory thing with switching back and forth between certain folders that have other Daisy books and back to the Bookshare folder and so on, but its still the same. Ive also tried creating a new folder and moving the contents from the first folder to the new folder and still, only the 20 or so unzipped daisy books show up. I first noticed this with the new JFW 13 beta version and thought that may have been the problem, but I have recently also tried using FSReader with the older JFW versions on my pc (12, 11) and still no dice. Im pretty sure that this wasnt an issue before, but now it seems as though no matter which Jaws version I use, the situation is still the same. Also, I havent used the merge utility in JFW 13 to carry over my older Jaws settings if that makes any difference. Again, just wondering if anyone elses come across this issue and or if it may be a beta bug or if FSReader on my machine may just be buggy. I know FS isnt developing FSReader any more so who knows, I may just report it as a beta bug as well as to regular support if I cant get this fixed. Id appreciate any feedback. Quick Settings * In Windows 7, after you press the APPLICATIONS key on an item in the tree view to open the context menu to change the persistence level, resolved an issue where the braille display would only show the first item in the menu even though JAWS would speak the other options as you navigate. In addition, the check mark indicating the current persistence level for an option is now shown in braille. * Updated the INSERT+F1 help messages for the Search edit field and the tree view to provide more information specific to Quick Settings. * Toggling the Select and Copy option, located under the Virtual Cursor options, now works as expected when set to Virtual Cursor or Using On Screen Highlight. * Added context help for the Last Changed Settings tree view item. * Addressed an issue where changing the punctuation setting for an application in Quick Settings would not work. [JAWS-Users] Uploading folders to Google Docs
Hello list, Recently I saw that Google Docs now supports the uploading of folders and was curious if any Jaws users have attempted uploading their folders and what they found the experience to be? Ive uploaded a couple of individual files and it took a little work with the Jaws cursor and whatnot, but for the most part, it wasnt too bad. I know that actually working with Google Docs itself is all but impossible, but I was more interested in the storage feature. How was the uploading process? Was it reasonably accessible sorting the various files once uploaded? What about downloading an individual file? Ive got quite a bit of books from Bookshare and other titles from other sources Ive collected over the years and wanted to upload this particular folder as a failsafe since it would be a colossal pain to have to try to hunt them all down should something happen to my pc which is getting rather long in the tooth and download once I finally upgrade my system. I do have the latest Jaws release, but am using JFW 11.0 out of personal preference as 12 in every subsequent release continues to be a major pain for me. But thats a topic for some other time though. Any observations or pointers would be appreciated. You go into Jaws, Languages, Create new profile. There you can play around with the different voices, synthesizers and languages etc. When I'm working on a translation, I for example set one word processor to Spanish with all punctuations spoke and a super slow rate and another word processing app with the English language document or vise versa to another voice profile with punctuations and adjusted speech rate. I also use the different speech schemes available, be it proof reading, word classic etc. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of John Justice Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2011 10:53 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] CREATING VOICE PROFILES FOR JAWS 12 There may be some users on the list who were confused about this as I was. I just couldn't figure out how to create a special voice profile for different applications I'm using. Here's what I mean. I prefer to have my e-mail read with the default Eloquence voice since that's the one used by Jaws to read the messages. But if I'm working in Word, I prefer to have another voice read documents. Weird, maybe. But that's what I wanted to create. Below, are the steps taught to me by Dennis at Freedom Scientific Technical Support. They work quite well so I'm sending them along in case someone else might be having the same problem. CREATING APPLICATION SPECIFIC PROFILES IN JAWS 12: 1.Press Insert J to activate the jaws window. 2.Press Enter on Options which is the environment first offered by Jaws. 3.Press V for the Voice and choose all Contexts or specific voices as you choose. 4.Choose the synthesizer you want to use for both the standard reading and Say All options, then move through the settings, creating the profile with your preferred choices. 5. Tab past the Okay button to Save As and press Enter. 6.If Eloquence is your default, the name will appear in the field. Erase it and replace the name with a new Voice Profile title. 7. I use the name of the application for each new profile: Word, Outlook, Excel and so on. 8.Jaws will ask you if you want to change the default. Tab to no and press Enter. 9.If the application you want to use isn't already open, open it now. 10.Use the Control-Insert-S to open the Voice Profiles window. 11.Move the pointer down until you have focused on the new profile you just created. 12. Tab to the dialog which asks you if you want that particular profile as a default when opening the application you are now using. 13. Press Enter on Yes and the jaws window will close. 14. Your focus will be returned to the application window but from now on, every time you open that particular application, the new profile will be used. 15. If you find it necessary to make changes, open the jaws window while the application is running and the changes will apply only to that voice profile and will not affect the default. CHANGING THEDEFAULT: Don't change the default jaws profile unless you are absolutely sure that those settings can be used in all unspecified environments. That is a risky choice and personally, I'd rather create a separate profile for things like Internet Explorer or for any other application. Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with jaws and fire fox
One issue I experienced with JFW 12 and Firefox 4.0 was that Jaws would get into some funky virtual cursor mode and I would have to toggle with the insert+z command to get out of it. Jaws would say application mode on and JFW would behave as though the virtual cursor was off. After toggeling it though, Jaws would say application mode off and I could get around the page fine. But as JFW 12 in general gave me more headaches than I found worth it, I have since gone back to JFW 11. I still get that weird Application mode thing from time to time though. So who knows, it may be a Firefox thing or maybe I have some shared component file floating around that I didn't get rid of when I uninstalled JFW 12 from my system. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Candy Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2011 4:32 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] problem with jaws and fire fox Hello everyone, I have just downloaded firefox to my lap top. [JAWS-Users] Making content fit in Excel cells
Hello list, I'm trying to work with some Excel spread sheets such as for merchandise quotes, purchase order and invoices where certain text like item description, delivery address etc can be 1, 2, or x lines. Because of this, I'm having trouble getting the text to properly fit in the cells as I then have to convert it to a PDF file and the whole template will get thrown off. Does anyone know or can they direct me where one can manually do this and more importantly, figure out how to adjust the cell/row/column size accordingly and have Jaws give me the necessary feedback so I know that it looks right? I've tried the autofit option in the menus, but the feedback from my sighted wife is that it just makes the cell text even smaller and makes it harder to read if not impossible. Not all text is equal so it's not like I can use a set peramitor. I've checked the Jaws Excel help settings and it's more to do with with reading titles and cell coordinates. That's fine, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm using JFW 11. I do have the latest JFW 12 from this past May, but as others have discussed on this and more lists, my experiences with Jaws 12 were too problematic to continue using it. My Excel is the 2003 edition. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 12 May HotFix has posted, build is 1161
I didn't see it expressly stated in the enhancements for this latest release, but so far, I've gone more than 2 hours with Firefox open and it has yet to crash on me. Much better then the every 15 to 20 minutes I was experiencing with the earlier JFW version. I'm still getting that weird Application Mode On thing when I go to my Google Reader page and still have to toggle the virtual cursor to break out of it and refreshing the page is still sluggish, but my system doesn't feel as over all slow and bogged down as it did with the April release of Jaws. Still not as snappy as JFW 11, but a noticeable improvement over the earlier JFW 12. Now, excuse me while I knock on some wood. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Eric Damery Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2011 7:14 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 12 May HotFix has posted, build is 1161 Good day everyone, We have just posted a new hotfix release of JAWS 12. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 11 and Word 2003 difficulties
Hello list, With all the trouble that the latest Jaws release (12.0.1158) has given me and others on these various slists, I have gone back to using Jaws 11 (11.0.1476 I think it is) for now. Aside from the issues here and there that have been fixed in the newer JFW 12 releases, Im satisfied with Jaws 11 over all. There is one thing however that I am experiencing and because its been so long since Ive used JFW 11, I cant recall if this was present in Jaws 11 when it was still the newest build. When I open a Word document, be it by launching MicrosoftWord itself or by composing an e-mail message through my Outlook 2003, I have difficulty with getting around the message field. I can type in the subject field with no problems and can arrow back and forth by character, word etc, but when Im in the message field for example, I cant seem to do anything. Jaws will just read the line of text that Im on, but I am unable to arrow back and forth or up and down. Very similar if I had the virtual cursor turned off on a webpage. The same goes for when Ive got a Word document open. I can type fine and dandy, but once I try using the various say all commands, Its almost completely a no go. The say all command works, but that's it. Ive tried switching the format from plane text to rtf to html and it doesn't make a difference. I've also tried going from the normal view to web etc in the view menu and still nothing. Sometimes, and for no reason, everything will work fine and I can navegate text wit no problems, but the troubles explained above happen more often than not and because of this, I'm finding myself using JFW 11 for pretty much everything, but when I have to type something or compose or respond to an e-mail, I'm switching between the two JFW versions. I can't figure out why sometimes things will work fine and others, it's just not happening. Is anyone else experiencing this and if so, were they able to fix it? I'm using Word 2003 and the Jaws versions mentioned above. Thanks, For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] Major JFW 12 problems with Firefox
Hello list, I have been having all sorts of trouble with Firefox and the latest Jaws 12 release. In particular the Google Reader page. I wanted to share what I'm experiencing and see if it may just be an issue with my machine or if others are dealing with the same problems. I have Google Reader as one of my homepages and when I launch Firefox, Jaws always behaves as though the virtual cursor is turned off. In fact, Jaws will say Application Mode On. In order to get Jaws to work properly, I have to do an insert+z keystroke command and then Jaws will say Application Mode off. I'll then be able to go around the page with no problems. This particular issue only started when upgrading the Firefox 4.0 and is still present with the latest Firefox 4.0.1 update. If while in Firefox and I go back to my Google Reader page, either by clicking on the Reader link from another Google site or through my saved bookmark at least 70% of the time, the Application Mode On issue comes up. I have noticed a marked increase of instances of Mozilla crashing with this latest Jaws release as well. Again, it happns most often while on the Google Reader page and while in Firefox in general. Either when I go to the Google Reader page, close a link that I had opened from Google Reader or simply by just having the page open or refreshing the page with the insert+escape key command. Upwards of 10 times a day. It would happen every now and then with the earlier versions of Jaws 12, but it has become a constant with the latest JFW rlease. I at first thought it was an issue with Firefox or perhaps a rogue add-on, but I have tried disabling add-ons and plug-ins and Firefox was still crashing left and right. When I use an older version of Jaws (11.0) however, Firefox not only never crashes, but the over all responsiveness of the browser and JFW feel over all snappier and better. With JFW 12, using the browser had become painfully slow either through regular navigating from page to page as well as when trying to refresh a page. Seconds would go by before Jaws would be able to speak. Not to mention the crashing problem. Jaws would outright crash much more frequently too. I don't experience the browser crashing issue in IE8, but the over all sluggishness with JFW 12 is present along with using other applications. I at first thought that I had been infected with a virus or other malware, but with the older version of 11.0, my computer is much, much more responsive. I do however experience the Application Mode On issue with JFW 11.0 as well. So maybe it's a Firefox 4.0 thing in regards to this. There are a couple of other problems, but the ones above are what are giving me the most problems. Is anyone else experiencing any of these problems or have any ideas on what may be causing it? Like I said, when using JFW 11.0, a lot of what I mentioned above doesn't happen. All my antivirus and malware stuff is up to date. I was going to shoot an email off to Freedom Scientific, but wanted to get feedback from other Jaws users as well. This is the first time a new Jaws release has given me this much trouble since I don't know when and want to be sure it's perhaps not something on my end. Re: [JAWS-Users] The new JAWS update
The only real issue I'm experiencing is with Google Reader in Firefox. It always takes a couple of tries with the spacebar or enter button to activate a link and for whatever reason, on that particular page, Jaws will start off after it loads by saying application mode on and behave as though the virtual cursor has been turned off. Doing a quick insert+z command will fix it, but it can be a little annoying. As far as Excel and other applications, no real big problems that I can think of. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Ferrin Sent: Thursday, May 05, 2011 1:44 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] The new JAWS update For what it's worth the update hasn't given me a bit of trouble. In the meantime, we wanted to take this opportunity for users to get this build early if they would like so we have posted it as the Download version on our web site. I have included the details of the changes in the release below. I have provided the download links at the bottom of this message. Regards, Eric Damery Freedom Scientific, Inc. JAWS 12 Features and Enhancements as of April 2011 JAWS Support for New MAGic Large Print Keyboard The MAGic Large Print Keyboard is a new accessory that contains extra keys assigned to the most commonly used MAGic functions. Its large and contrasting letters also make it easier to type and use MAGic hot keys. Using the MAGic Keyboard Manager, you can assign different MAGic functions to these keys. For example, if you do not use dual monitors, you can change the Jump to Next Display key to any other feature item such as mute system sounds. The keyboard also allows the assignment of shortcuts to keys. With a shortcut, the keys can launch applications, open files on your computer or in a network folder, or open a favorite Web site. For example, you can assign the M1 key (available along the top of the MAGic Large Print Keyboard) to open a document that you need to regularly access. Another benefit is that you can use the keyboard with JAWS screen reading software. Similar to MAGic, you can assign hot keys to JAWS functions while also using the keyboard with or without running MAGic. Note that when running the two applications together, the JAWS functionality will override the MAGic functionality. Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 Support JAWS 12 has been further enhanced for Internet Explorer 9 which is available for users of Windows 7 and Vista. These enhancements include Braille and the JAWS cursor being able to properly navigate and read pages. Please note that with the release of Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft has made significant changes which prevent commercial screen magnification products from smoothing fonts as we had previously. If font smoothing is important for users of MAGic on your computer, we recommend that you remain with Internet Explorer 8 on your machine until a solution has been worked out. Microsoft Excel Improvements The interface to the Excel Object Model has been rewritten. You will experience a more responsive and accurate interface to Excel. Visual Studio 2010 Professional Support Visual Studio 2010 Professional is a development environment from Microsoft that enables application developers to develop software using a wide variety of languages including C++, C#, Visual Basic.net, and more. JAWS 12 now provides robust support with both speech and braille for various areas of the Visual Studio system, including: * IntelliSense, similar to auto completion, which gives suggestions for what to type next based on what you have already entered * Editor Adornments such as bookmarks and break points * WPF and Forms Designers for laying out dialog boxes and other windows; as well as the Code, XML, Text, and Macro Editors * As you develop your applications, you will even be able to use the Debugger to step through your program to locate errors UTF-8 File Support JAWS script files now support UTF-8 format. In Script Manager, the File menu has the new UTF-8 Format command. When you open a UTF-8 encoded script file (JSS), the command has a check mark. If you open an ANSI encoded script file, the command does not have a check mark. You can save an ANSI encoded file as UTF-8 by simply selecting, or checking, the UTF-8 Format command in the File menu. Likewise, to save a UTF-8 formatted file as ANSI,

I've been holding off on upgrading because of the broken add-on and I believe there were problems with some keystrokes, but can't recall right now what they were. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tim Appleby Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2011 5:32 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 4 revisited Actually, it does, update your Webvisum to version 0.8 and it will conform to Firefox 4.0. have a good day - Original Message - From: Flor Lynch florl...@iol.ie To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2011 6:27 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 4 revisited Up to now as far as I know, whether using JAWS or Window-eyes, WebVisum (note the spelling) does not work with Firefox 4. - Original Message - From: wayne smith waynesoundsm...@earthlink.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2011 11:45 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 4 revisited Hello all- I just had an exchange with someone on another list. [JAWS-Users] Grubba database accessibility?
Hello list, Has anyone here had any experience with the Grubba database solution? www.grubba.net I am looking for something to keep track of customers and update notes such as phone calls, what was said and that can be accessed and updated by others and not just me. I've played around with Google Docs and it's not necessarily accessible as I may need. I'm using the latest JFW 12.0. I'm going to give it a spin, but thought I'd ask too and see if anyone's had a chance to put it through its paces and if they had any suggestions or additional observations. [JAWS-Users] Odd facebook gibberish in Firefox
Hello list, I don't know if it's just me, but does anyone else notice when on the Facebook website while in the Firefox browser, that certain links are read as gibberish or in a foreign language? For example, kezdőlap Arkadaşlar Alt+Shift+3 Mesajlar Alt+Shift+4 értesítések Alt+Shift+5 This is what it says above the search edit field instead of where it should say notifications, messages etc. I looked it up and I believe that it's Hungarian. Also, where you're told which friends are online right now before the events section, instead of Jaws reading the name of the person, it will just read html garbage as a link. It's always been there, but I just never got around to asking about it. This is not the case when in IE and yes, my language settings are set to English. Just thought I'd ask and see if it's an issue for all jaws users, or it's another fb thing that needs fixing or if it 's somehow something exclusive to my set up. Oh, I'm using JFW 12.0.525 if that makes a difference. Thanks. There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is Accessible with Jaws. I use it all the time to read ePub formatted e-books. Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: Introducing FreeKindleSoftwarewithAccessibility Features
ePub is pretty ubiquitous. You're going to find it with pretty much all the online booksellers. Amazon pushes Kindle hard, but it's definitely not the only e-book format out there. They just try to make it seem as though it is. There are also a bunch of e-book format converters out there free and for a price that can do the job of converting particular formats. With different degrees of success of course. Some more accessible with jaws than others too. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dale Leavens Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 9:17 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: Introducing FreeKindleSoftwarewithAccessibility Features Here in lies the problem though. Not all electronic books are created equal in the site of the cyber gods. Kindle is a format not necessarily the same as other e-book formats. It is the old Betamax/VHS wars all over again. Same with Audio books. I am discovering that not all of our MP3 reading solutions, Victor Stream, Plextalk, Olympus DM4 so far tested give good access to all of the audio books they all claim to support. I expect the same is true with e-book readers. Is Epub the same format as Kindle? Are all titles available to ePub equivalent to those available to Kindle? Will we, the consumer ever actually get what we want or will we continue to accept and actually purchase what they, the providers insist we should have? And when will we, the blind, have access to the promise of universal accessibility that the printing press now four or more centuries ago gave seeing people who only needed to take the initiative to learn to read. The universality of binary 1s and 0s is being very deliberately subverted with the specific intent to limit who has access to written material. This is not the coincidental barriers of things like Adobe PDF but a deliberate restriction. Kindle will certainly hear from me on the subject but it is a message which requires far broader broadcast. This goes around and around and around. Tape was thought to kill the music industry then the cassette then the Internet. Video home equipment was going to kill the cinema and so Internet sharing and pirating while the movies make more money than ever before. - Original Message - From: CrisMunoz54 crismuno...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 11:04 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: Introducing Free KindleSoftwarewithAccessibility Features There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is Accessible with Jaws. [JAWS-Users] recent strange behavior with Google Voice and Jaws12.0.522
Hello list, For the past few days I have been experiencing some odd behavior with Google Voice and JFW. When I go to voice.google.com Jaws acts as if it's in some sort of menu as opposed to how it would react on a regular webpage. I can't arrow up or down and only sometimes by pressing tab or shift tab, does JFW seem to work. I find this odd, because this didnt' start happening until just a few days ago and only in IE8. If I do an alt+tab command, Jaws will say leaving menu bar, but when I do an alt+tab back to the GV page, that whole menu bar behavior comes back. Is anyone else experiencing this by any chance? I havent' updated any software or adjusted any settings so I'm pretty sure it's not that. The voice.google.com page appears to work as it always has while in Firefox. I've got some pdf's that I'd like to convert to this format to read, but I'm not sure what to exactly look for and poking around the internet, there seems to be a few choices, but again, I'm not exactly sure as to the accessibility of any of these options. I just thought I'd ask around to see if anyone's already had success doing this with Jaws. Freeware is preferred, but even a program that may cost something is fine. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] nothing's coming up with gmail standard view
Hello list, A few minutes ago, from my Google Reader page I clicked on the Gmail link and when the new tab opened, instead of the standard view page with all the usual information, (links, messages, edit fields etc.) I'm getting a page with no links and just a few lines saying content landmark, navigation landmark, search landmark and so on. When I go around the page with either the jaws or Jaws to pc cursor, I can read some of the missing information, but no luck with the virtual cursor. I'm doing this through IE8. Can anyone else recreate or confirm this issue? I don't know if it's just my machine or if it's some new Jaws problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] nothing's coming up with gmail standard view
Yes, I tried that and did the whole close and reopen the browser, but nothing. My sighted wife says that everything looks fine visually. Since I wasn't able to do it, I asked her if she could click on the view basic html mode mode to see if that was any better. It in fact was, but the only downside to that is I can't access Google Voice in the Basic html mode which was the whole reason for me opening my Gmail account up in the first place. I wanted to make a call. [JAWS-Users] making a call with google voice and jaws
Hello list, I'm playing with google voice and cannot for whatever reason make a call through my computer. Having google voice call my cell or home phone and then connecting me is no problem, but with the headphones and microphone... no dice. I installed the voice plug in and yes, I have checked that the volume is up and that the microphone is properly working. I go to the voice.google.com site and either select a number from my contact or just type in the number I want to call. Then I go into the combo box to select which phone/ option I want to use to call with and I choose the google talk one and then press enter on the connect toggle button. Jaws will read it saying calling you, but I get no indication that anything is happening on my end and eventually, it just goes back to the connect button. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? The help section says that I've pretty much got everything write on what I'm supposed to do, but I'm wondering if there's some inaccessible feature or aspect to it that I'm not aware of? Thanks. [JAWS-Users] jaws 12 and read by paragraph
Hello list, As I don't believe that this is a bug per say, I thought I would ask on the list for suggestions... In the new beta, Jaws appears to instead of read blocks of text or links as an entire block when pressing control+any of the arrow keys or the letter p for the say paragraph reading command, but rather each link and at times line of text is treated as its own paragraph. This strikes me as redundant in a way as there is already a command to read each individual line at a time and now it's feels like much more unnecessary work to get around a page. Is there in fact a way to modify this behavior so that it can revert to prior versions of JFW or is this one of those modifications that we're just going to have to live with... Thanks... Re: [JAWS-Users] How is JAWS 12 Public Beta working out for users?
Is anyone experiencing the following: In Outlook 2003, when I go over to the calander and arrow back and forth through the different days, Jaws will repeatedly say 2. It doesn't matter how many appointments I may have for any particular day or any at all. Jaws will just continue to say 2,2,2,2,2,2. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Don Marang Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 9:11 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] How is JAWS 12 Public Beta working out for users? The JAWS 12 beta seems very stable so far! I was deeply disappointed in the stability of JAWS 11. In fact, I felt cheated! I was not able to use JAWS 11 very much all year until the last update. The last update fixed the beyond annoying issues and finally made it possible to use daily. The prior strange issues with user scripts of any type and Windows Live Mail were unexplainable. Tech Support blamed it on my Windows account and I would need to reinstall Windows. It did not effect any other programs, which all work fine, so I just used JAWS 10. I really like the new Settings Center. This should make it easier for users of all experiences to find the setting they want to change. I had one exception. I wanted to set punctuation to All for Script Manager. There was no way to set this directly in Settings Manager or an indication to add a voice profile. Of course, I knew how to create a new Voice Profile in JAWS 11 then switch profiles when in Script Manager and this still worked. If you type in voice profile or profile, nothing is available. If I just type voice, there are three hits found, but nothing for voice profiles. However, for someone who has never figured this out in JAWS 11, I am sure they will not know how to set this. Is this a bug or just a suggestion? Are suggestions also submitted as beta bug reports? By the way, I always set Insert + ` to the SetPunctuation function in default settings as well. I would also like to have hotkeys for the Application Volume Controls for the current application in Vista and Windows 7. This is not an issue if the current, active application is Windows Media Player or other application with it's own volume controls. However, many applications, like Internet Explorer and many others, do not have hotkeys for volume. Needing to Open the System Tray, Open the Volume Mixer, and find the active application can be difficult if the application's volume is extremely loud. I half heartedly attempted to create my own JAWS Scripts to do this using a small free utility, nircmd.exe. This works great if you can obtain the exact name used for the application in the volume mixer. I have not figured out how to do this, The names are also slightly different in Vista and Windows 7. I am excited about the new Settings Center, recent additions to the scripting language, and the stability of JAWS 12 so far. Of course, I was excited at first when the JAWS 11 beta first came out as well. Don Marang There is just so much stuff in the world that, to me, is devoid of any real substance, value, and content that I just try to make sure that I am working on things that matter. Re: [JAWS-Users] How is JAWS 12 Public Beta working out for users?
Overall it seems more stable as far as being an initial beta than other upgrades. No real major issues to speak of so far. I am however noticing some things, such as: 1. For whatever reason, in Google Reader via IE8, Jaws does feel a bit sluggish and unresponsive at times. Silence, slow to respond to commands, randomly being placed on other parts of the page, having to tab or shift tab to get focus back, etc. I dont find this to be the case when in Firefox though. It doesnt stop me from getting around Google Reader all together, but it is affecting my navigation. I dont have this amount of trouble when using JFW 11 and IE8. 2. Again, in Google Reader, but this time from within Firefox, when clickin on a particular subscription feed or by doing a simple search from within the overall page and navegating down the various entries using the h key for headings, Jaws will read a bunch of garbled link text instead of that particular heading title. Ive found that when going in reverse, (shift+h instead of just h) Jaws reads the entry titles perfectly fine. This isnt an issue in IE8 at all. I had reported this glitch in prior releases, but its still present in version 12. 3. Jaws seems to have a lot of trouble with Firefox webpages that have a lot of links. When encountering a page with hundreds either by visiting a blog posting with hundreds of responces or if Im searching for an item to buy and want all results shown on one page or again, if Im in Google Reader and press the navigation button to have all my subscriptions appear (I have over 240 rss feeds for example(, JFW will become quite unresponsive and at times crash on me. Many times I almost have to step away from my machine since Jaws wont even speak if I do an alt+tab to go to another app. This is especially an issue for me as I help my wife with her eBay store and when going into the sellers page, it takes forever for Jaws to talk. That is if Im in fact lucky and JFW doesnt crash all together. I dont have this problem in IE8. I really started noticing this issue with JFW 11 and still with version 12. 4. I had reported a problem when upgrading from JFW 10 to 11 with all the information in my e-mails through Outlook 2003 (from, subject, date etc) being spoken twice when arrowing up and down the list view. I was able to reproduce this problem with the escalations department (Inquiry Number: 197907), but never got a solution to it. The same problem is present in version 12. I like the way how the configuration manager has been cleaned up and Firefox feels generally crisper than in versions past. Google Voice seems to be a lot cleaner through Mozilla than with IE. Not too easy if at all when trying to make calls through the gmail page itself though. I I appreciate the request for feedback and hope my comments have helped in some way. [JAWS-Users] Dish Network to Offer Online Viewing - NYTimes.com
Hello list, I came across this story earlier in todays' New York Times edition and thought it worthy of passing on to the group. The site is still in beta form. I logged in using my Dish Network account information and initially it seems easy to get around. I haven't tried playing any media yet so I don't know how accessible that may be. There's also a link to send feedback and I would encourage other Dish subscribers to do so so that our needs as visually impaired subscribers are made aware of. I've already done so. If the account isn't in your name, then perhaps you can get whoever is the account holder to write on your behalf? It looks promising and hopefully, with enough of our input, Dish will implement whatever necessary designs in this new platform so that we can enjoy it from the outset and not as some afterthought addressed a way later date. Again, you need to be a Dish subscriber to be able to log in and use the site. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/23/business/media/23dish.html For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

This also dumps the memory to a file that FS support may ask you to email to them. From the JAWS 8 What's New: If a total loss of speech occurs, it is difficult to recover JAWS without rebooting the computer. However, a reboot provides no diagnostic information to assist Freedom Scientific in researching the underlying problem. INSERT+WINDOWS Key+F4 is a new JAWS keystroke for emergency recovery. The new keystroke closes JAWS, terminates all related processes, and creates a memory dump file. The diagnostic information can be used to assist Technical Support. (Note: The keystroke will not work at the Windows Log In screen.) After issuing this command, you can restart JAWS to regain speech. The memory dump file is saved to the Settings folder. To locate the file, do the following: Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu. Choose Programs. Choose JAWS 8.0, Explore JAWS, and then Explore My Settings. This opens the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\Settings\ENU. Press the BACKSPACE key to navigate to the Settings folder. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW11
Using outlook 2003 with the latest jfw I too am experiencing issues in the listbox. However, my problem is that all the information is spoken twice before speaking the first few lines of text of the e-mail. After speaking to fs's escalation department and playing around with various settings and doing an uninstall/install, we didnt' resolve my issue, but I was told that my particular problem came up in the beta testing of the build, but that I was the first so far to report it with the final release. Maybe you can play with the customize outlook message settings or perhaps disable add ons (this is what fs had me do for example) and see if that helps... other then that, contacting fs would seem like a good option too. Who knows, maybe it's just another bug that got through the testing part. [JAWS-Users] firefox process and the new jfw update
Hello list, Since updating to the new JFW release that came out last week, I've been noticing that my Firefox browser has become quite sluggish and over all more cumbersome. Jaws frequently pauses for quite a bit now after the browser is open for a few minutes and often, I have to click on a link more than once for it to activate. Checking out the processes in the task manager, I see that my Firefox process gets into the 40 range after only 40 minutes or so and goes up to 6 and 60 soon after. Before doing the upgrade, I wouldn't see those types of numbers only until the browser had been open for a long time. Now, if I want to continue using Mozilla on a prolonged basis, I find myself having to close and relaunch Firefox throughout the day. Something I never really had to do except for every blue moon prior to doing the upgrade. IE 8 seems to be working fine with no wild increase in its process. I have no idea whether this new JFW 11.0.143 upgrade and my Mozilla performance issues have anything to do with each other, but I can't think of anything else that has changed on my system that could be affecting it. I've got both antivirus and anty spyware programs (Microsoft security essentials and A2squared) running on my machine and everything's up to date and clean. Also, I'm running XP Pro 32 bit. I know others along with myself have been reporting various problems since upgrading JFW and was curious if my Mozilla process issue was in fact being experienced by others as well. Any input or observations or perhaps even confirmation of this problem would be quite welcomed. Firefox is my prefered browser and I'd like to keep it that way. I've already contacted FS support about some other update issues but so far after a couple of e-mail back and forths, I've gotten the standard your inquiry has been bumped up to a research supervisor response. I'm running the latest Firefox, but had been doing so prior to updating JFW last week. I cant' recall having these issues with the bloated process and general sluggishness/unresponsiveness from Jaws before the 11.0.143 upgrade though. I've disabled plug ins and add ons in Firefox too just to be sure that might be contributing to the problem, but no luck. As far as a blue screen . . . I'd have to check with my sighted wife, but so far, she hasnt' mentioned anything to me regarding any Firefox problems on her PC. [JAWS-Users] problems with outlook's reading pane and jfw 11
Hello list, Recently when using Outlook 2003 and JFW 11 Ive run into a problem when tabbing down from the list view of messages to the field of text, Ill get a bunch of text quite similar to what Jaws would read if I had the invisible cursor activated or if Ive virtualized the entire window. Instead of the actual e-mail text. Ive only noticed it within the last couple of weeks or so. I cant be exact in the timing, but I dont think I encountered this issue prior to installing the latest Jaws update posted this month. Its only happened 5 or 6 times., but again, I dont remember this happening anytime before. The only thing that seems to fix it is closing Outlook and reopening it. So, nothing terribly inconvenient or disruptive, but still, if it becomes more and more frequent, then it might very well become so. In any event, I was curious to know if others have been experiencing this issue. I was planning FS tech support about it next week, but thought Id ask around here as well just in case it may be some sort of isolated thing. Ill go ahead and paste the text at the end of this message as well. Again, Im running the latest JFW 11, xp pro and outlook 2003. Re: [JAWS-Users] problems with outlook's reading pane and jfw 11
Hello, I do in fact have the reading pane set to bottom. More importantly though, my Outlook settings havent' changed at all. Only now has this issue come about. Thanks for responding. Cristobal -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Thursday, December 31, 2009 4:16 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] problems with outlook's reading pane and jfw 11 Hello, The reading pane should be off or set to the bottom of the screen. You might want to check under your view menu and in the toolbars submenu remove the checkmark from some of the toolbars that are checked. The standard toolbar should be checked. You can remove or check the items by pressing enter key on the choices. If you are using Outlook Connector then you will want to leave it checked. You might also want to turn off the auto preview choice in the view menu if it is active. Use down arrow key in the view menu to the reading pane choice and choose either off or bottom from the submenu. Here is some information from the JAWS helpful hints regarding Outlook: Outlook Reading Pane When using JAWS, the Outlook Reading Pane must be set to the bottom of the window or disabled. If the Reading Pane is set to the right, it forces the Message List Headers into Two-line mode, and only the first line is announced. To set the Reading Pane to the bottom of the window, or to disable it, do the following: Open Outlook. Press ALT+V to open the View menu. Choose the Reading Pane sub menu. Select Bottom to set the pane to the bottom of the window, or select Off to disable the reading pane. I also suggest that you use the enter key on a message in the list of messages to open it when using Outlook. If I use tab key from the inbox, the focus moves to calendar information. If I had the preview pane turned on then focus might move into it. Pressing enter key on the message actually opens the body of the message. Take care. Happy new year! Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Update Posted today, December 17th
Thanks for the heads-up. In the future, could a similar feature for tracking packages via the USPS be considered? My wife has an online business and the USPS is what she uses. She's sighted, but I help her out whenever possible and this time to time requires the tracking of a package. It would be most helpful and fast to have a research it option for this as well. On a side note, other than requesting or suggesting research it loptions on a public mailing list, is there any other way to give feedback on this jfw feature for future considerations? I mean, outside of the standard tech support e-mail for example. Thanks, Cristobal -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Eric Damery Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 8:44 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Update Posted today, December 17th Greetings all, The latest Update for JAWS 11 users has been released. You can get it now on the download pages of Freedom Scientific or via the Check for Updates Option. Please remember that if you have made some changes to your Research It items, you may need to go to the configuration manager and check all the items after installing this new update. Here are the details on the changes below. Regards, Eric Damery Enhanced Typing Support for Focus Braille Displays For several versions, JAWS has had the ability to receive text input from the Focus 40 and 80, and Focus 40 Blue braille displays using the included Perkins-style braille keyboard. Use LEFT SHIFT+SPACEBAR+RIGHT SHIFT, the three buttons at the front of the device, to toggle Typing Mode on and off on the Focus display. Now this functionality has been expanded so that the Focus can do almost everything you can do while using PAC Mate Remote. When you toggle on Typing Mode, not only can you input text via computer braille, but you can also control your computer from the Focus, just as you can with PAC Mate Remote using a PAC Mate BX or QX. For more information, refer to the PAC Mate Remote Help topic in JAWS for the list of keystrokes.: Open the JAWS Help system and navigate to the Keystrokes book. Press RIGHT ARROW to expand the book then DOWN ARROW to the Keystrokes for PAC Mate BX Remote Mode topic. Press ENTER on this topic, and then F6 to move into the reading pane. You must have JAWS 11.0.756 or later installed to use this enhanced Typing Mode functionality. Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.756 (December 2009) The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS 11.0.746 release and the JAWS 11.0.756 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release. * Resolved an issue in Windows 7 where properly authorized JAWS licenses were being asked to reactivate after rebooting. * Improvements have been made to the way JAWS recognizes all data tables that are tagged with the TH component. * Resolved an issue with FSReader 2.0 where audio content was not being played after pressing CTRL+P. * The Set Row Total and the Set Column Total functions now correctly define and report the row or column total for the selected cell in an Excel worksheet. * Resolved an issue in Excel where some settings were not correctly saved after closing the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box. * JAWS correctly identifies tables using the Navigation Quick Key T when running Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8. * Resolved an issue where JAWS would frequently shut down when running Windows Explorer in Windows 7. * When using Firefox, JAWS correctly enters Forms Mode and reads table headings. * Resolved a reported issue when using Terminal Services or Remote desktop if connecting to a computer running Windows 7. * Resolved a reported issue in Internet Explorer edit controls where text being selected was not being announced as expected. The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It feature in this release. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke. See previous lookup sources http://fresci-stage/downloads/jaws/JAWS-whats-new.asp#NewLookupSource01 for a list of items added in an earlier release. * Area Code Lookup: Type a U.S. or Canadian area code into the lookup edit field and learn the city, state, or province location for that area code. * Business Search: Allows you to search for a specific or general business in your area using its name or business category and location. The location can be in the form of a zip code, city, or city and state. Search results will provide the name, address, phone number, and, when applicable, Web site link. Always use a semicolon to separate the business name or category from the location, for example, pizza; 33716. This particular search will return a list of pizza restaurants in and around the 33716 zip code.

[JAWS-Users] problems in Mozilla with radio buttons and extra chatter
Hello list, Using JFW 11, I've noticed that while in Mozilla, I'm getting a lot of extra chatter from Jaws in certain webpages. The Huffington Post, British Airways, kayak, Lufthansa for example. There are more, but these are the ones I've used today. Especially in the Huffington post, after almost every time I press any navigational key stroke jaws will repeat the title of the window or some other random words. The same is true in the other pages I mentioned but not to the same extreme. It always happens however, when I press the h key for the next or previous heading and am taken to either the first heading on the top of the page or the last heading at the bottem of the page. I have my screen echo setting set to highlight as it's always been. In addition, whenever I press the spacebar to activate a radio button on a webpage from within Mozilla, Jaws seems to lose it's place and I'm not able to arrow either up or down and end up having to press the tab key to get the cursor working again. By doing this, I always end up at the bottem of the page and have to find my way back to where I was previously. Is anyone else experiencing this or might it be a settings issue on my end? The radio button thing especially I find disruptive and since I really dont' experience it in IE, I have to believe it's a Mozilla bug. I recall submitting a bug report during the beta period, but who knows... Anyway, I thought I'd ask and hopefully others can give me feedback. Hello list, I've been having difficulty with a certain webpage and its' accessibility when viewing it through Mozilla Firefox. I was going to write FS tech support about it, but before I did, I thought I'd ask others on the list if they could have a crack at it and see if they're able to have better success than me. It's pretty straight forward. The web address is: http://www.rcpl.lib.ca.us/ It's the url to my local public library. When I visit it in IE8, there's a combo box and edit field where one can exicute a search either by title or author. However, when viewing the same page in Firefox, the combo box and edit field aren't present at all. I've fiddled around with my various Firefox add ons to make sure none of them were blocking anything that might impeed the site from displaying properly, but the form fields still don't appear. I'm using JFW 11 and Firefox 3.55 and IE8. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Cristobal For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
