[JAWS-Users] a couple questions

2018-05-14 Thread Shane Hecker
I'm using the latest Jaws 2018 with Windows 10 build 1803. Is it my
imagination or did the keystroke for bringing up a skim reading summary
go away? Also, has anyone got the virtual ribbons to work in Windows
explorer? I can't seem to get them working. They work everywhere else so
far as I can tell, but not in windows explorer. Thanks for any info.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Weather Underground has changed

2017-03-11 Thread Shane Hecker
Companies sometimes have 2 versions of their site. One is for a desktop
computer, the other is mobile friendly meaning a mobile phone can access
it with no problems. The desktop site is loaded with things that make
the site look good on a desktop computer namely graphics. The mobile
site does not use much in the way of graphics because mobile phones
aren't as powerful as a desktop computer. They tend to be more text
based. From what I've seen, the folks at FS tend to use the mobile site
for programming the research it feature because it is easier to work
with. So whe the mobile site goes down, so does research it.

A perfect example of what I'm talking about is facebook. Have a look at
the main site, www.facebook.com. Then compare it to m.facebook.com,
which is the mobile site. You will find that the mobile site is faster
and easier to use than the main site.

So does this mean that when you use the research feature on the
computer, it should work because it doesn't. I guess I'm a little
confused as to what you mean by desktop.

In this case, it's not the research it causing the issue. The mobile
site which was m.wund.com is down. So when that happens, it redirects
to www.wunderground.com which is the desktop site. The research it
feature doesn't know how to interact with the desktop site, which
causes it to say that it couldn't find any results. I'm not for sure
on this, but I thought FS had a way to program new items into the
research it function. Either that or they were going to make a way
for this to be done. If they haven't done this, it would be a useful
feature to add.

[JAWS-Users] annoying jaws problem

2017-03-02 Thread Shane Hecker
I've seen this quite a bit with my laptop running Windows 10 pro 64 bit.
When I try looking at the desktop with the Jaws cursor, it will say
something like this:

checked unchecked read only pressed unavailable droppable grabbed dragable

What is this and why can't the Jaws cursor properly see the desktop? Oh
yeah and when you try to right click something in the system tray when
the Jaws cursor is acting up, it doesn't work. Only way I've found to
fix this is to completely restart the computer. Restarting Jaws has no
effect.

I'd test the hard drive first. Usually it's the number 1 thing that goes
out. If you have a second computer with a USB port and a docking station
for hard drives, this should be relatively straight forward. Basically
what you do is connect the hard drive to the station, connect the
station to your second computer via USB, then run tests to see if there
are problems. Based on what you've said I'm assuming you know some about
this. For thorough testing of a hard drive, you may want to look up
"Bart's Stuff Test". It's an old program but it works nicely and it's
free.

If the hard drive is sound, and you want to test memory, look up "Mem
Test HCI". There's a free and a commercial version. The free version
should do what you want.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Travel Directions

2016-02-21 Thread Shane Hecker
The sun can sometimes be of help, depending on the season and time of
day. Morning, the sun is in the east, evening, it's in the west. Also, a
good compass can be of use. If you got the iPhone, you've got a built-in
compass. It will tell you in degrees which way you are facing. 0/360
degrees north, 90 degrees east, 180 degrees south, and 270 degrees west.
Split those in half and you get northeast, southeast, southwest, and
northwest. For example, 45 degrees is northeast, 135 degrees is
southeast, and so on. Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] AMD/Intel

The longest warranty that I'm aware of is 3 years. That goes for both
Intel and AMD chips. But to get that you have to buy the retail
versions. If you buy the OEM version you get 90 days. When did Intel
offer a lifetime warranty? I've been working with computers for a while
and never recall seeing a chip that had that warranty.

It is just personal preference, I have used both chips over the years and if

chips with a similar spec is minimal.
There may be a cost factor, AMD used to be considerably cheaper than Intel but
I am not sure if this is still the case.
Intel used to offer lifetime warranty on their chips as well.

The chip you use should not affect Jaws one way or the other. If you are
looking for the absolutely fastest chip money can buy, then Intel is
what you want. If you are on a budget, AMD will give you the most bang
for your buck. As an example, the Intel i7 4790k costs $300 or more, the
AMD fx8370 costs $164, give or take.

Re: [JAWS-Users] After updating to seventeen

It is likely you still have Jaws 16 on your machine. That is unless you
uninstalled it after installing Jaws 17. If you did not uninstall the
older version and you still wish to do so, go to programs and features

uninstall/change. Remove Jaws only, do not remove the shared components.
One more thing, make sure all your programs behave with Jaws 17.

so well under the newer version.

VA had no business installing software unless they asked first. I
personally have AVG free 2015 on 2 computers, both running Jaws
16.0.4350 and don't have any problems. I'd be curious as to which
version of AVG was installed. If they installed a trial of AVG Internet
Security I could see that messing with Jaws. In particular, the firewall
could be blocking Jaws from running, in which case you would probably
have to pull up Narrator to find this out. This assumes that Narrator
can read the dialog box presented by AVG. Jaws works for reading the
boxes, but NVDA for example has problems.

Hello Gang:

A VA rep installed AVG 2015 on a desktop and laptop in the past few days.
JAWS was killed on both computers.

Is that a problem with AVG 2015? Or, were we suppose to tell AVG to leave
JAWS alone? Neither she nor I did that. And, I received no prompts
asking if

there were to be any exceptions to the A V G doing its job.

So, who screwed up.us or A V G?

If it was us, how do I solve the problem, if I put A V G back on the
computers?

Thanks. Neil

Could someone explain the advantages of using the Amazon.com option in
Research It versus visiting Amazon.com directly? Using JAWS 16 with Windows
7, I have no trouble either navigating the Amazon.com site or making
purchases. And for those who find the regular Amazon.com site somewhat
cluttered or difficult to navigate, there is always the accessible version
which is optimized for screen readers. The trouble with Research It is that
when a web site is modified, Research It often no longer works well with
that site, if at all. Although the Research It feature was useful and
convenient when it was originally introduced, many users are now reporting
problems with it, and FS should considerdropping it from future releases of
JAWS.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon.com not working in research it

2015-09-17 Thread Shane Hecker
I reported the amazon issue to FS a while back. There is a work around
for it. But first, let me explain what causes this, at least what caused
the problems for me and how to fix it.
When you use the screen reader optimized version of amazon.com, I
believe it puts a cookie on your computer. The cookie tells the browser
to default to that site. This in turn screws with the research-it
feature because it is expecting the main site, not the screen reader
optimized version. Hence, you get "press escape to close results viewer"
with no results.
The fix is to delete cookies. Then, try doing the research-it function
and it should work. If you are signed into an account, I'd suggest
signing out first, close the browser, then delete the cookies.
As a side note, under advanced in internet options, I have it set to not
save encrypted pages to disk and to empty temporary internet files when
the browser is closed. Hope this information is helpful.

Shane
ps: I just tried the research-it function with amazon and it works.

One way to be sure is what it says at the top line. If it says simply
amazon then you are on the site for screen readers. IF is says
Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books,

try is deleting cookies.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications

2015-08-18 Thread Shane Hecker
This is not specifically related to your problem, but it is similar
enough. I feel your pain. The ISP in my area has a site where you can
make updates to your account, change payment information, and so on. The
problem with the site is that at the bottom of the page where the
changes are made, there is a check box that says I accept the terms and
conditions. Only one problem, Jaws does not see this as a check box.
Hitting space bar or enter does absolutely nothing. I spent 20 minutes
using IE and Firefox trying to check that stupid box after updating
credit card information. It took using the OCR function and making a
guess as to where to click to finally get that box checked. I had to
take a trip to the cable company today to turn in a couple boxes, and I
let them have it. I wasn't rude, but flat out told them that their site
was a pain to work with. All that to say it might be worth contacting
the people who run the site and see what they can do. Now whether it
will do any good is another story, but it can't hurt to try.

HRportal commonly used in job applications

Hello all.

I realize I rarely post on the JAWS users list, but I'm helping a family
member apply for online jobs and have run into an issue with one of the big
online candidate profile sites that I think could be JAWS related. The issue
is with People Answers.

People Answers (http://www.peopleanswers.com) is a Website that companies
use to host online assessments and questionnaires for job candidates. When I
log in to the site to begin a job assessment from an employer using this
portal, I'm forwarded to a page asking me to scroll through an agreement and
click I Agree to except it. When I scroll through the agreement, JAWS
reads, I Agree button unavailable and I do not agree unavailable. The
sighted person I'm working with says the button is grayed out, and she can't
click on I Agree.

I've scrolled through the entire agreement at least three times this evening
using Internet Explorer; I also tried this page under Mozilla Firefox with
the same result. I've had similar issues with this portal in the past. So
far, I've only gotten this button to populate correctly twice, and both
times it's taken me an hour to scroll through the information on the
agreement multiple times.

The agreement itself consists of two sections: a privacy statement and terms
of use. Both have separate links to allow you to open and print the privacy
statement and terms of service, then close the page to return to the
application. I've had to open and close the page multiple times to get the
I agree buttons to populate correctly. This evening, I was unable to do so
at all after scrolling to the bottom of the page at least three times under
Internet Explorer 11 and once under Mozilla Firefox 40. I'm using JAWS 16,
build 4350 with a 64-bit PC running Windows 10.

I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with this online job portal and has
any solutions to this.

Thanks in advance.

Chris.

It looks like the updates are sorted by most recent, meaning the most
recent updates are at the top of the list. If you installed this update
recently, it should be near the top of the list. You are doing it right.
You may also want to look under all programs as it may be listed there.
If you uninstall the software, it may cause problems as Jaws needs the
display driver installed to work properly. I'd go to www.amd.com or the
computer manufacturer's web site and download the latest drivers from
there. If you go to your computer manufacturer's web site, you will need
the model number of your computer.

Try doing an OCR on the box (insert+spacebar, then o, then either w or
s) and see if that brings up anything. If not you will need sighted
assistance.
In the meantime, clicking the close button will likely make the box go
away. If you feel comfortable doing this, you might try going into
msconfig and
see if you can find the app or service that is causing the box to pop
up. Just know that if you don't know what you are doing, you can make
things worse
rather than better by making changes. If you don't feel comfortable
with working with msconfig, then it's probably best to let a
technician do this.

Try doing an OCR on the box (insert+spacebar, then o, then either w or
s) and see if that brings up anything. If not you will need sighted
assistance. In the meantime, clicking the close button will likely make
the box go away. If you feel comfortable doing this, you might try going
into msconfig and see if you can find the app or service that is causing
the box to pop up. Just know that if you don't know what you are doing,
you can make things worse rather than better by making changes. If you
don't feel comfortable with working with msconfig, then it's probably
best to let a technician do this.

You might get something like that if the manufacturer of your pc puts
out an update for the bios or the preinstalled software. Otherwise, I've
never seen an update from Microsoft that presents that way. If you have
it set to automatically update, you likely won't see anything.
Otherwise, you should see something in the system tray that says new
updates are available or perhaps new updates are ready to be installed.
Anything else and it's likely *not* Microsoft.

[JAWS-Users] flip-flop forms mode

I have a problem when visiting www.lowes.com. Jaws likes to go in and
out of forms mode when navigating through the site. In many places, you

when Jaws goes into forms mode. This is particularly annoying when you
find something you want to look at in greater depth. To read the site,
you have to constantly exit out of forms mode. Sometimes when a page
loads, it goes in and out of forms mode quickly (flip-flop). Any ideas

this did not work. Using Jaws 16.

Gerald,
Unfortunately that's quite normal with 'modern' software installers.
It's either Ask or Chrome or a few similar bun unnecessary, but you
have the option to uncheck the install box during setup, IF of course
you can find it.

So now you can use C Cleaner to un install chrome.

Those numbers are not unreasonable. If the CPU usage were near 100%,
then I'd be concerned. I'd be curious as to your system specs,
particularly how much memory you have. I know you have Windows 7 64 bit
so that tells me the system is relatively new. I say relatively because
a 5 year old system is considered old. Even so, 64 bit CPUs were being
made at that time. Have you run a disk defrag? In particluar, when was
the last time the pagefile was defragmented? If the system is making
heavy use of it, that could also explain a slow down. Defragler is a
free utility that can defragment the page file.

I tried the suggestions. I can create new contacts all day but still
can't add one from an email. I went to the from field, selected it with
shift+control+right arrow. When I hit the applications key, I get cut
unavailable, copy, paste unavailable, clear, and select all. No option
to add contacts. Tried shift+control+end after making sure I was at the
top of the from field, still same thing.

use your arrow keys, If you would want to send a message to a particular

The first way, is,

Press ctrl+shift+c

Press escape key, and say yes to save.
The second way is,

1, open a message from the person whom you wish to add/reply to,

2, now shift+tab until you hear;
From: the person's name and email address; Move your left arrow to highlight
the name/email

3, press the applications key,

Tried looking up the information on the internet, but it didn't help.

Curious because up till now, it always told me how many messages I had
and how many unread messages there are. You are of course correct about
the inbox thing. As for the misspelling, just tried it and yes it still
tells me if I misspell a word. However it sometimes will repeat the
first letter of a word twice when using left and right arrows to
navigate. Another problem that seems to persist is when you are reading
by word. When you write your message, try navigating past the end of
what you wrote and watch what happens. Be sure to navigate by word.

No, Jaws does not work when you enter the bios. You don't see these
much, but there are some utilities put out by some computer and
motherboard manufacturers that will let you access the bios through
windows. Most are inaccessible, and those that are have very limited
accessibility from my experience. Who knows though, this may have
changed since the last time I looked into this. There used to be a pci
card you could get called the weasel that would allow you to remotely
control a computer from another. One of the features that it had was to
allow access to the bios, but I've never seen this card in operation so
can't speak as to how well it works. I'd be interested if they've come
out with an alternative way for doing this.

If you want protected view completely turned off, then you will want to
uncheck all the boxes. Were you able to find the category that said
protected view under trust center settings? There are 3 boxes, the first
turns on or off protected view for documents coming from the internet.
The second turns on or off protected view for documents in potentially
unsafe locations. The third turns on or off protected view for
attachments in outlook. I'd leave the second box checked.

Settings is in the menu bar. You can press alt+s to get to it or you
could hit alt then arrow to it. As far as the tool bar, there's a
workaround for that. When you run the install, when it gets to the
screen where it asks if you want to install the tool bar, you can do an
OCR on it. That will give you a chance to select whether or not you want
to install the tool bar. This assumes you have Jaws 13 or later and the
OCR engine is installed.

2013-07-29 Thread Shane Hecker
I wonder if your laptop is trying to conserve battery power by turning
off the wireless adapter after it's been idle for a while. Might look
under device manager, find your wireless adapter, bring up the context
menu, go to properties. Under one of those tabs should be something
similar to allow power management of this device. Try unchecking that
and see what happens.

I seem to have some sort of issue with my ASUS laptop running window's 7, I
don't think this is a window's issue.

If my laptop is idle for long periods of time, then I seem to loose internet
connection, I know this from what it states in the system's tray as no
internet access. So when this occurs, I press enter on that item, then
windows trouble shooter does something to check out reason why no internet
connection, it will in most cases fix the problem, but also it's giving me
reasons as to what could be causing this to happen in the first place.
It's always the same thing..
stating it's loose cable or plug in an ether net cable to the laptop, or
sometimes it states issues with the wireless adapter.

The cable modem is currently plugged to the xp desktop computer, I am about
15 feet from this modem with the laptop, so I'm wondering why this keeps
occurring and how it can be corrected. Is there some setting maybe that is
set to time out for my internet connection that needs to be changed, and if
so, where do I do that at?

Thanks for any help..

Patricia
