[JAWS-Users] a couple questions
I'm using the latest Jaws 2018 with Windows 10 build 1803. Is it my imagination or did the keystroke for bringing up a skim reading summary go away? Also, has anyone got the virtual ribbons to work in Windows explorer? I can't seem to get them working. They work everywhere else so far as I can tell, but not in windows explorer. Re: [JAWS-Users] Weather Underground has changed
Companies sometimes have 2 versions of their site. One is for a desktop computer, the other is mobile friendly meaning a mobile phone can access it with no problems. The desktop site is loaded with things that make the site look good on a desktop computer namely graphics. The mobile site does not use much in the way of graphics because mobile phones aren't as powerful as a desktop computer. They tend to be more text based. From what I've seen, the folks at FS tend to use the mobile site for programming the research it feature because it is easier to work with. So whe the mobile site goes down, so does research it. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is facebook. Have a look at the main site, www.facebook.com. Then compare it to m.facebook.com, which is the mobile site. You will find that the mobile site is faster and easier to use than the main site. I've seen this quite a bit with my laptop running Windows 10 pro 64 bit. When I try looking at the desktop with the Jaws cursor, it will say something like this: checked unchecked read only pressed unavailable droppable grabbed dragable What is this and why can't the Jaws cursor properly see the desktop? Oh yeah and when you try to right click something in the system tray when the Jaws cursor is acting up, it doesn't work. Only way I've found to fix this is to completely restart the computer. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Travel Directions
The sun can sometimes be of help, depending on the season and time of day. Morning, the sun is in the east, evening, it's in the west. Also, a good compass can be of use. If you got the iPhone, you've got a built-in compass. It will tell you in degrees which way you are facing. 0/360 degrees north, 90 degrees east, 180 degrees south, and 270 degrees west. Split those in half and you get northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. For example, 45 degrees is northeast, 135 degrees is southeast, and so on. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] AMD/Intel
The longest warranty that I'm aware of is 3 years. That goes for both Intel and AMD chips. But to get that you have to buy the retail versions. If you buy the OEM version you get 90 days. When did Intel offer a lifetime warranty? I've been working with computers for a while and never recall seeing a chip that had that warranty. There may be a cost factor, AMD used to be considerably cheaper than Intel but I am not sure if this is still the case. The chip you use should not affect Jaws one way or the other. If you are looking for the absolutely fastest chip money can buy, then Intel is what you want. Re: [JAWS-Users] After updating to seventeen
It is likely you still have Jaws 16 on your machine. That is unless you uninstalled it after installing Jaws 17. If you did not uninstall the older version and you still wish to do so, go to programs and features in the control panel, find Jaws 16 then right click it and hit uninstall/change. I'm not sure AVG is the one for all the blame in this case. I'd say the VA had no business installing software unless they asked first. I personally have AVG free 2015 on 2 computers, both running Jaws 16.0.4350 and don't have any problems. I'd be curious as to which version of AVG was installed. If they installed a trial of AVG Internet Security I could see that messing with Jaws. In particular, the firewall could be blocking Jaws from running, in which case you would probably have to pull up Narrator to find this out. This assumes that Narrator can read the dialog box presented by AVG. Jaws works for reading the boxes, but NVDA for example has problems. Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon.com not working in research it
I reported the amazon issue to FS a while back. There is a work around for it. But first, let me explain what causes this, at least what caused the problems for me and how to fix it. When you use the screen reader optimized version of amazon.com, I believe it puts a cookie on your computer. The cookie tells the browser to default to that site. This in turn screws with the research-it feature because it is expecting the main site, not the screen reader optimized version. Hence, you get "press escape to close results viewer" with no results. The fix is to delete cookies. Then, try doing the research-it function and it should work. If you are signed into an account, I'd suggest signing out first, close the browser, then delete the cookies. As a side note, under advanced in internet options, I have it set to not save encrypted pages to disk and to empty temporary internet files when the browser is closed. Hope this information is helpful. Shane ps: I just tried the research-it function with amazon and it works. One way to be sure is what it says at the top line. If it says simply amazon then you are on the site for screen readers. IF is says Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs more then you are on the full site. One thing you may want to try is deleting cookies. Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications
This is not specifically related to your problem, but it is similar enough. I feel your pain. The ISP in my area has a site where you can make updates to your account, change payment information, and so on. The problem with the site is that at the bottom of the page where the changes are made, there is a check box that says I accept the terms and conditions. Only one problem, Jaws does not see this as a check box. Hitting space bar or enter does absolutely nothing. I spent 20 minutes using IE and Firefox trying to check that stupid box after updating credit card information. It took using the OCR function and making a guess as to where to click to finally get that box checked. I had to take a trip to the cable company today to turn in a couple boxes, and I let them have it. I wasn't rude, but flat out told them that their site was a pain to work with. All that to say it might be worth contacting the people who run the site and see what they can do. Now whether it will do any good is another story, but it can't hurt to try. I realize I rarely post on the JAWS users list, but I'm helping a family member apply for online jobs and have run into an issue with one of the big online candidate profile sites that I think could be JAWS related. The issue is with People Answers. People Answers (http://www.peopleanswers.com) is a Website that companies use to host online assessments and questionnaires for job candidates. When I log in to the site to begin a job assessment from an employer using this portal, I'm forwarded to a page asking me to scroll through an agreement and click I Agree to except it. When I scroll through the agreement, JAWS reads, I Agree button unavailable and I do not agree unavailable. The sighted person I'm working with says the button is grayed out, and she can't click on I Agree. I've scrolled through the entire agreement at least three times this evening using Internet Explorer; I also tried this page under Mozilla Firefox with the same result. I've had similar issues with this portal in the past. So far, I've only gotten this button to populate correctly twice, and both times it's taken me an hour to scroll through the information on the agreement multiple times. The agreement itself consists of two sections: a privacy statement and terms of use. Both have separate links to allow you to open and print the privacy statement and terms of service, then close the page to return to the application. I've had to open and close the page multiple times to get the I agree buttons to populate correctly. This evening, I was unable to do so at all after scrolling to the bottom of the page at least three times under Internet Explorer 11 and once under Mozilla Firefox 40. I'm using JAWS 16, build 4350 with a 64-bit PC running Windows 10. I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with this online job portal and has any solutions to this. Thanks in advance. Chris. Re: [JAWS-Users] a windows update
It looks like the updates are sorted by most recent, meaning the most recent updates are at the top of the list. If you installed this update recently, it should be near the top of the list. You are doing it right. You may also want to look under all programs as it may be listed there. If you uninstall the software, it may cause problems as Jaws needs the display driver installed to work properly. I'd go to www.amd.com or the computer manufacturer's web site and download the latest drivers from there. If you go to your computer manufacturer's web site, you will need the model number of your computer. You might get something like that if the manufacturer of your pc puts out an update for the bios or the preinstalled software. Otherwise, I've never seen an update from Microsoft that presents that way. If you have it set to automatically update, you likely won't see anything. Interesting you say that about missing threats. I worked on a computer at my church which had over 100 viruses on it and Microsoft Security Essentials didn't pick up any of them. [JAWS-Users] accepting credit cards
I'm interested to know what it takes to accept credit cards. I have the Magtek 21040145 SureSwipe reader. I have both a desktop and laptop running Windows 7. I know there are charges for accepting credit cards, anywhere from 1.5 to over 3% plus 15 to 30 cents on top of that, depending on who you go with. The questions are who to go with that are accessible using the latest version of Jaws and who will allow for the use of the reader I have. In other words, which credit card accepting services will allow for the use of the reader I have and are accessible with Jaws? [JAWS-Users] flip-flop forms mode
I have a problem when visiting www.lowes.com. Jaws likes to go in and out of forms mode when navigating through the site. In many places, you can't simply go to a link and hit enter. It will only click the link when Jaws goes into forms mode. This is particularly annoying when you find something you want to look at in greater depth. To read the site, you have to constantly exit out of forms mode. Sometimes when a page loads, it goes in and out of forms mode quickly (flip-flop). Any ideas on how to fix this? Those numbers are not unreasonable. If the CPU usage were near 100%, then I'd be concerned. I'd be curious as to your system specs, particularly how much memory you have. I know you have Windows 7 64 bit so that tells me the system is relatively new. I say relatively because a 5 year old system is considered old. Even so, 64 bit CPUs were being made at that time. Have you run a disk defrag? In particluar, when was the last time the pagefile was defragmented? If the system is making heavy use of it, that could also explain a slow down. Defragler is a free utility that can defragment the page file. Shane On 2/14/2015 5:22 PM, Jim Ronald wrote: Shane, CPU Usage 53% Physical Memory 30% Should I do anything according to these numbers? Curious because up till now, it always told me how many messages I had and how many unread messages there are. You are of course correct about the inbox thing. As for the misspelling, just tried it and yes it still tells me if I misspell a word. However it sometimes will repeat the first letter of a word twice when using left and right arrows to navigate. Another problem that seems to persist is when you are reading by word. When you write your message, try navigating past the end of what you wrote and watch what happens. Be sure to navigate by word. Lets put it this way. I can burn cds as well as dvds. If you want to make an ISO image that's easy enough to do. No mouse is needed to do those functions. The blueray player it comes with has keyboard shortcuts for most items, but since I don't have bluerays, I haven't been able to test that. I primarily use burnin rom. Re: [JAWS-Users] bios
No, Jaws does not work when you enter the bios. You don't see these much, but there are some utilities put out by some computer and motherboard manufacturers that will let you access the bios through windows. Most are inaccessible, and those that are have very limited accessibility from my experience. Who knows though, this may have changed since the last time I looked into this. There used to be a pci card you could get called the weasel that would allow you to remotely control a computer from another. One of the features that it had was to allow access to the bios, but I've never seen this card in operation so can't speak as to how well it works. I'd be interested if they've come out with an alternative way for doing this. Shane On 3/23/2014 3:04 PM, Kevin Lee wrote: is jaws active if you access the bios of your computer? email is golden ! Settings is in the menu bar. You can press alt+s to get to it or you could hit alt then arrow to it. As far as the tool bar, there's a workaround for that. When you run the install, when it gets to the screen where it asks if you want to install the tool bar, you can do an OCR on it. Re: [JAWS-Users] free antibirus software
I've tried Avg, Avast, and MSE. I'd go with MSE. I had AVG on the computer for a while and it caused my system to run extremely slow, especially when going through emails. To this day, I can't figure out why. All I do know is that as soon as I made the switch, the computer became much more responsive. On 7/30/2013 2:26 PM, Damien O'Connor wrote: Hi there. It is called Windows Defender. It looks the same and functions the same as MSE did in Windows 7. Re: [JAWS-Users] Wireless Adapter
I wonder if your laptop is trying to conserve battery power by turning off the wireless adapter after it's been idle for a while. Might look under device manager, find your wireless adapter, bring up the context menu, go to properties. Under one of those tabs should be something similar to allow power management of this device. Try unchecking that and see what happens.
