Re: [JAWS-Users] Kurtzweil Installation

2013-07-15 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
It is one of the options one checks or unchecks during installation.

Let her uninstall and reinstall Kurzweil, checking the relevant option.

Kurzweil's installation speaks and is very accessible, she just needs to listen
when to press enter, or escape at the relevant prompts during installation.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading and saving Ebooks

2013-02-18 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
The Adobe Digital Editions must be authorised with the same ID with which the
books were purchased from the vendor site.

Sometimes it helps to first open the Adobe digital reader on one's pc before
downloading the .acsm file to the pc.

The complete book will only be downloaded when one opens the acsm file with
adobe digital reader on one's pc.

Adobe ditgital reader version 2 is accessible with jaws, from version 12 but I
never try to locate the files via its library.

I open them by highlighting the acsm file in windows explorer and choose adobe
digital reader via the application key.

It will say fulfilling title and book content when the book has been opened.

The complete file of the downloaded ebook, .epub or .pdf, will then be in the
my digital editions directory under my documents.

It reads fine with jaws 12 and you can use the bookmark and go to page features
by pressing tab in the open document and following the prompts.

As far as I'm aware, one cannot change the pitch of any of the human sounding

You can however, via the verbosity settings, set it to say Cap, on

Hello List
Although this might be a problem with the south african bank
site of Nedbank, I hope someone can suggest a solution.
In JAWS 13 and earlier my online bank statement was
displayed in such a way that each transaction occupied 3
rows. The first row contained the date, the second row the
transaction info like cheque number and the amount and the
third row the balance.
Now with JAWS 14 Jaws reads the info in one long line and
even subsequent transactions continue on the same line i.e.
if there are five transactions all appear in one long line
without spaces between the various items.
This makes it very difficult to read.
I did report this to FS but I suppose they find it difficult
to replicate if it is perhaps just a SA bank problem
Has anyone tried their bank accounts in other countries?

Jaws versions from v12 does indeed work for reading ebooks via the free
mainstream adobe digital reader version 2.0, for .epub and pdf files.

If one registers an Adobe ID, one can even authorise one's drm protected
purchased books with the vendor ID within adobe digital reader and read them
with jaws,, which I have tested, also said to work with Window eyes and NVDA.

At the end of the getting started guide to be downloaded from the site, of
which you'd have to google for the url, there is a list of shortcuts to work
with windows and the Mac and also specifically for jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] EBooks

2012-06-27 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Depending on the file format, you could read .epub and .pdf ebooks with version
1.8.1 of the free adobe digital preview program, although it's not bug free and
the pdf books crash jaws easily, if one tries to navigate.

Note that you'd have to authorise the program with the relevant book ID, if
protected, otherwise it won't open.

Version 13 of Kurzweil 1000, just released, can also read epub files, provided
that it is not drm protected.

All Amazon's purchases are drm protected, but they don't sell .epub or .pdf
format ebooks in any case, only kindle, with .prc, .mobi, or .azw extensions.

They can be converted to txt, provided that they are no longer drm protected,
by either the zamzar.com, or convertfiles mobi to txt, sites.

Re: [JAWS-Users] large PDF file

2012-06-13 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Brad,

You don't have to physically print the document with Kurzweil, but it will
probably take about 5 minutes from the moment you open it in Kurzweil until it
has completed OCR conversion of all 165 pages, like when scanning.

It will use your default scanning settings and you could open it with Kurzweil
directly from windows explorer via the applications menu, when the pdf document
is selected in the list view.

Then it's in .kes format and you can navigate and edit with all Kurzweil's
sophisticated features, adding bookmarks, notes, audio notes etc.

Good luck with that, Brad. I don't like the way Adobe handles largish
documents, it seems to choke and take forever. You can go into preferences
and tell it to only convert portions of the document as you go.

If you have a few Benjamin's lying around, avail yourself of Open Book or
Kurzweil. You can use the Freedom Import or Kurzweil Virtual Printer
respectively. Just open the .pdf document, issue the print command and
select whichever one is applicable as your printer.

The disadvantage to reading docs in Adobe like that, is any table conversion
doesn't work all that well. You have to be able to do a bit of mental
interpolation.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Kindle For PC

2012-03-27 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Listers,

I'm in South Africa and for some inexplicable reason, people in Africa are
prohibited from downloading this accessible Kindle for pc program via amazon.

I already have the mainstream kindle for pc, via Amazon's site, installed and
registered on my pc since January and have, with much hassles, succeeded to
get a kindle book downloaded into it, in order to retrieve it from the my
kindle content folder on my pc, to further handle with the book.

Once downloaded, I don't plan to read it via the kindle for pc, but will
convert the book, but navigation of the menus via jaws, will be of much help to
get the download streamlined and know when it was opened in kindle for pc.

My questions are:

As I'm prohibited from downloading it, will the site also prohibit me from
using the accessible version, as I am able to download via the basic one?

If I manage to obtain it via goodwill from overseas, will I have to uninstall
the basic one, or could I install the other one over it and would I have to
reauthorise it under a different ID?
Alternatively,
Is there perhaps some way that one could get hold of only that additional
accessibility features that will work with jaws, to install it, like an
add on to my current pc installation, thereby eliminating deregistering the
already working version to reregister the new one on the same authorisation?

Thanks and regards,

Riana

I've Nokia phones with Symbian 3rd gen. I found the Nokia PC suite to
be just very hard and tedious and inconsistent to use on my XP 32 bit as
well as Win7 64bit PC's. So I gave up on the PC suite totally and use a
much more simpler, consistent and reliable method to do all of the
below:
1. install TTS software like Talks.
2. install human sounding voices
3. copy my own mp3 files to play or use as ring tones.

The answer to all the above is to directly copy over any of the above
files to the removable memory card (like the RS-MMC card on Nokia 6682
or the other types of such removable mem cards on other Nokia phones
like the N95 etc) using the mem card reader slot on your laptop or PC.
Many of these phone mem cards can be attached to adaptors so they fit in
a regular SD card slot on your PC. If you don't have the adaptor to make
your phone's mem card fit into a SD card slot on your PC then you can

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Accessibility of pc suite on windows 7 using jaws
12

Hello Listers,

Still using a third generation symbian N82, I was able to connect to the
internet using the phone via USB cable, utilising pc suite, latest
accessible version according to the blindsea.com site, via windows xp,
but no longer under windows 7 64 bit.

Previously I could open pc suite from the system tray and find buttons
for backup, connect to the internet, etc, but when trying this now, the
system tray appears empty with jaws, even routing pc curser to jaws.

This happens on both my notebook and pc, same versions of O S windows 7
and Jaws.

I am authorised to upgrade to jaws 13, but will it help and could
someone please assist with exact steps, preferably possible via jaws 12,
latest update?

I had dsl connection problems last week and wasted hours on trying all I
could think of in vain.

Thanks and regards,

Riana

Hello,

Wordpad reads .doc files in windows 7, perhaps not .docx files, haven't
tested that, so why not just open it in that application and save to
.txt , if that is what is wanted?

Howdy Freijac,

You can assign WordPad to read .DOC files if you have already done
this,
try selecting all the text from the Word / WordPad file paste into a
NotePad / text file, saving it, naming it appropriately. This will
work
for you, until you can get a conversion program. Hope this helps. Take
care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF why some work and some don't?

2012-02-26 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
If you have, or can upgrade to Kurzweil 1000, its latest two versions
does this conversion well, even from opening the pdf file with Kurzweil
via the applications menu from within windows explorer's list view.
Just note that it will use your default OCR settings, which may perhaps
not be applicable to the particular document, but you can change it,
using one of the other longer methods.

If you can supply Kurzweil Educational systems with proof of a validly
purchased version of openbook,
years ago my openbook serial number and specific version was sufficient
proof, you can upgrade and switch to Kurzweil for something like $150.

You'll never look back again, no pun intended.

Let me remind list members that for those graphical PDF documents, you
can
easily e-mail them as an attachment to conv...@robobraille.org. You
will
get back a text attachment of the document in readable form. If you
send

They don't install automatically upon installation of jaws.

After that, you would have to create profiles for the voices you want to

Hi list. In the past. I made use of the option in Jaws. That lets you
specify one of the real speak voices. To be used in the say all command
in Jaws. Which then automatically switches back to eloquence for normal
navigation etc. However, I turned that feature off quite some time ago.
I now wish to turn it back on. I followed the steps for doing so. As
outlined in the Jaws training tutorial. However, I don't seem to be able
to get it to work again. I am using Jaws 12. Are the real speak voices,
no longer included as part of the Jaws installation? Is that where I am
going wrong? As I only have the one software CD for Jaws 12. That was
sent to me.

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to remove all of the

bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are paid to include

trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of accessory and extra

software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date. Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their software.

Hi.

Does your computer's have a Celeron processor?
This kind of processor has a very small cache, which often is resulting
by
very slow responding from the computer's keyboard.

It can help a bit, having enough ram, at least 1 mb for a XP system, but
it
will never be good, before the processor/motherboard has been changed to

another type, probably an Intel I3 board.

I don't know if this really is your problem, but it seam's to me to be
such
a kind.

 Do a scanDisk on both.
Just go to desk top, myComputer, hit enter. Now on the local drive hit

 application key and chose properties...
Then do a control + tab and hit enter. Tab to fix drive and check.
Then ok
 your way out.
When you reboot it will do that job.
after that is done. Run defrag on the system, and disk clean up. You
can
find that in accessories, system tools, disk clean up.
If you have a registry cleaner run it also.
 Now your all clean.
Do a insert + f11, and see just what all is running.
For some you may have to go into control panel, task bar and startup
menu.
Just un check hide icons and they will show all.
Stop all that don't need to run and then shut computer off and once
off
 restart it.
That will purge the memory and come up clean. Where a reboot will
still
 keep junk around.

Do you have this key echo delay with other screen readers like NVDA and
System Access to Go? It might be worth trying one or both of these two
free
screen readers to see whether you experience the same key echo delay
problem
with them as you do with JAWS. This way, you can determine whether the
key
echo delay is a JAWS problem only, or a more general hardware problem.

uninstall

remove shared components when uninstalling the previous versions or
not?
And is it best to uninstall the newest version I want to remove and

remove
that first and then work forward to the newest version?

Hi, In older versions of JAWS I could copy my settings by going to

In v12 and v11, I am not sure if the settings are being copied

Does this method no longer work for carrying around your settings with

Sounds like you are using a template with double line spacing.
The short answer is to select a Style for single lines.
Unfortunately i can't tell you where that is on the stupid ribbon but
in
Word 2003 it's in the Format Menu, under Styles and Formatting..

statutes and related documentation, is accessible with jaws and acts
could be accessed in pdf format:

Thanks. Perhaps Sensory will come with a solution. By the

Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files

2011-01-30 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Alan,

I've never got pdf files to convert successfully using openbook 7.02,
even though one is supposed to be able to do it via the virtual printer,
as openbook hangs the pc and I ended up having to restart, as all
speech, including jaws was gone.

If the document in pdf is printed material and not graphics, the
versions of Jaws since version 10 works ok with Adobe from version 8.

The alternative option would be to use a mainstream scanning program
like omnipage with jaws, or Kurzweil.

I don't personally have experience doing the OCR with Omnipage, but a
blind colleague gets good results with Omnipage and assists me
regularly with conversions of court cases.

 Hi Alan

Why bother with printing it at all?

Open OpenBook and open the pdf file there and OB will do what is
needed to
 read it to you!

Just like you get paper stuff through your post to read you just scan
it,
having the computer copy of something just cuts out the scanning bit.

You can print anything you produce to the OpenBook Virtual printer,
I'm
pretty sure of that but if I'm wrong someone will correct me!

 Hi Guys,

I am very new to JAWS, so I apologise in advance for my lack of
 knowledge.
I have been sent a PDF form and have been assured that it is
accessible
 and
can be completed and then printed off.

I have never opened a PDF on Windows before as I am generally a Mac
user,
but sadly VoiceOver on the Mac does not play nicely with Adobe
products.

I opened the PDF in Adobe Acrobat 10 and the version of JAWS is 11.
 Should
the PDF start reading automatically? I have tabbed around and also
hit
 the
arrow keys, but nothing seems to happen.

I can get the application menus to work, but I can't seem to get JAWS
to
speak anything on the 7 page document. I have enough sight to see
that
 it
 is not a blank page.

Do I have to do anything specific with a interactive form? Or is
there a
keyboard shortcut I am not pressing to tell JAWS to start reading the

 PDF?

Many thanks in advance and if anyone would rather discuss this off
list,
then feel free to email me.

I'm writing from work, where I don't have skype, but in skype 5, you can
still add a contact via the menus, I think it's probably under tools if
not under a contacts submenu, the difference being further that you have
to press the spacebar instead of enter, to get into the edit boxes.

I do have Doug Lee's scripts for jaws installed, but don't know whether
that has a bearing on this issue.

By the way, according to the Skype English list, skype 5.1 is out and
Doug has already released scripts for that too.

If I recall correctly, it was mentioned on the skype English list that
one should have DougLee's jaws scripts installed to have skype operate

I have installed skype watch with the other jaws scripts and although it

Hi everyone,

There was much discussion about this a few weeks ago. Back then I wasn't
looking.

I am currently running a Toshiba ultrathin. I have Windows 7, 2 gigs of
ram.
The problem is my processor is only 1.3GHZ. For some time, this has been
wonderful, mainly using Outlook 2007 and Word, 2007.

I have the new Openbook 9.0 with the Pearl Camera. This laptop is fast
enough when scanning a page. But is very slow in the processing. When I
do a
scan and read,Jaws is very sluggish as the computer processes the pages
I
have scanned.

I had my processor tested under a load as the scan/read process was done
and
was told the processor is at its max.

Since this was already discussed on this list, I am giving my e-mail
address
if anyone would like to contact me off list with advice about other
options
I might check out.

Thank you, Russ

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-13 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Listers,

In Windows 7 Home premium, which I think per default comes with
windows media player version 12, the ripping options are really not that
much different from the previous version, if you set your view options
to the menu, not sure whether it's called classic menu, view.

As your settings are retained, once made, you can a next time, just
insert the cd and if you've set it to automatically rip the cd when
inserted, you won't even have to make any other changes, when ripping a
second cd.

However, if you do not specifically place a high premium on and prefer
to rip to wma lossless or CDA format and do not need your track and
album titles to be retrieved from the internet, you can use the switch
program to convert the songs to another format, even the same format
like mp3, just with a lower bitrate encoding, which will in effect also
rip the cd.

I cannot recall which version of switch you have to install to work on
windows 7, but if you try to install an earlier incompattible version,
it will tell you to download a relevant version from the webpage and
even open the page for you.

But, as far as I could figure out, you cannot burn with switch.

Riana

Re: [JAWS-Users] Converting an .XLS file

2010-10-05 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Mike,

Another easy way is to just open the excel document, select all with
control a, copy to the clipboard and paste into a blank word document,
to be saved in .doc or .dox format.

That will preserve the tables and formatting and can then be read in
Ms Word.

It is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file. If you have Word, you
probably
have Excel as part of Office. It is probably most easily read with
Excel.
However, if it does not contain many columns or extremely wide, perhaps
it
could be converted to a Word table.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem getting JAWS to automatically start

2010-09-29 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Greg and List,

I had this issue once, although with jaws versions 9, upgrading to 10
and because I had trouble getting the authorisation activated via the
internet, I uninstalled version 10, after which version 9 no longer
wanted to start when the computer started up.

It did not help to do a repair. Apparently somewhere in the settings,
even though the relevant checkboxes are checked, the startup version
remains connected, or tethered to the latest version you have installed,
even though you have uninstalled it since, thus not starting the
previous version you want to revert to, so you'd probably have to
uninstall version 11, or
at least re-install it again.

 give the following a try;

 1, go into, jaws options/basics,

2, tab and enter on, automatically start jaws

 now, you need to have,
start jaws at the log in screen checked,
start jaws after log in screen for all users checked,
start jaws after log in for this user, make sure that always is
 highlighted,
 you should hear,
start jaws after log in for this user, always, 1of3.

 now tab okay, press enter.

 Hello all,
Firstly, I am running the latest version of JAWS 11 on a 64bit

uninstall it because something happened during instalation of it.
Now
the problem is I cant get JAWS 11 to start automatically. I press
insert plus J to get to the JAWS menu. Wen there, I go to options,

then basics, then press enter on the automatically start JAWS
button.
I check automatically start JAWS at the login screen. I press the
ok
button. Now, when I go back to
those options again the automatically start JAWS at login is
unchecked.
I have turned off UAC to see if that was the problem and same
results.
I am not sure if when I uninstalled JAWS 12 if that messed
something up
or not. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Voice Settings

2010-09-13 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Kerry,

In jaws 11 you have to distinguish clearly between the voice adjustment
menu and the profile selection menu under the voices menu from within
the
jaws contextual menu.

The shortcut control s with jaws key, only brings up the select profile
menu, which may perhaps be what you also get via the systems tray, I'm
not sure.

But in that menu, you cannot change the profile settings, only select
already set up profiles.

Thus, the change language synthesiser settings, only appears in the
adjust voices menu, which is the one you can't reach via the shortcut.

If you change the synthesiser language, only the profiles available for
the language you've chosen, appears.

So, if you have one Spanish voice profile set up or installed, it will
only appear when your synthesiser language is set to Spanish and vice
versa with the English voices.

As elloquence have voices for both Spanish and English, the elloquence
voice will appear in both, but the Solo direct human sounding voices,
are tethered to the specific installed voices for that presently
selected language synthesiser.

Only when you turn the synthesiser voice back to the other one, you
would get back the other languages' voices.

Regards,

Riana

Just ensure that you have jaws version 10 or higher installed first and

Then just create your preferred profiles via the adjust voices menu from

Hi Listers,

But one still would have a hassle, I think, because sometimes the dsl
status light flickers, which apparently is wrong, as it should burn
constantly.

I don't know whether one would be able to identify that with the

If you can tell them what lights are on/off in an order, let's say from
top

is
supposed to be On/off and what their colors should be, it is probably a

I am sorry about posting such a message but, I have run into
situations

our Internet Provider when I needed to know what lights, are or are

For Lisa and others who may be concerned with knowing the status of

things.
 I
use my probe to tell me about the lights on various cooking devices
such
 as
a rice cooker, foreman grill, and many other things. It will find
lights
 on
 those little cube shaped power supplies that plug into the wall;
the
blinking light on the victor stream; the light on the computer
 speakers;
and a host of other things I can't bring to mind just now. Just a

Does anyone know whether scripts have been released for skype 5 and
could you perhaps post a link to locate them, if so?

From a different list, I gather that the latest version is easier to

I don't know whether skype watch is accessible again, though.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving Jaws Dictionary items

2010-06-02 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Ken,

As the jaws dictionary is for pronunciation purposes only, jaws will
pronounce words as per the default pronunciation
of jaws for a specific language,
no matter whether it's necessarily correct, unless you specifically
change the pronunciation for that particular word to be pronounced as
you like it, or as per a different language pronounciation.

One that comes to mind is guillotine, the original pronunciation stems
from French, but unless you change the English eloquence to use the
French pronunciation, it will be said differently.

remind
you that if you want to have the same dictionary entries in Outlook

The merge utility will not only merge your dictionary entries for the

You

What happens that you cannot get into outlook?

I have exactly the same setup, Jaws 10 latest, xp pro, outlook 2003,

and I don't experience that problem.

There have been discussions on the win amp list that the memory, after

had any problem and use both media players regularly, as well as
Kurzweil and can switch to outlook and open it from the start menu any
time during and after having exited them.

So I don't think your problem is with jaws. Earlier versions of jaws 10
did have a focus problem and one still sometimes gets the jaws

independent from the media players' use.

Hello Joanne,

If when you open the PDF in the Adobe Reader you hear alert: empty
document announced then the file is likely an image of a printed page
that
has been scanned. I found that a small freeware program called
FreeOCR
can usually do quite a good job on this kind of file. If you have
Kurzweil,
OpenBook, OmniPage or another commercial OCR program then you should be
able
to run OCR on the file and get the desired results. Here is a link to
FreeOCR if you want to download it. After the link are some steps to
follow
when using the program for a scanned image file.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/freeocr.exe

1.Install FreeOCR by pressing enter key or double-clicking on the
downloaded file.

2.Follow prompts to install the software. An icon will be created
on
the desktop.

3.You might want to restart your system when installation is
complete,
although the program doesn't tell you that a restart is required.

4.Press enter key or double-click the FreeOCR icon on the desktop
to
start the program.

5.Use Alt+F to bring up the file menu, use down arrow to the load
PDF
choice and press enter key.

6.Browse to the PDF file to be used and open it.

7.Press alt+O to go into the OCR menu and press enter key on the
start
OCR process choice.

8.Use tab key to move into the edit area that tells you that focus
is in
page 1.

9.After waiting some time for processing to finish use Alt+T to go
into
the text menu, use down arrow to the copy text to clipboard choice and
press enter key.

10. Open up your word processing program and paste the text.

11. The top few lines will be text from the FreeOCR program so you can
select it and delete it. The main text of the document should start
right
after the text you are going to delete.

12. An alternative to copying the text to the clipboard is to use the
save
text choice in the text menu of FreeOCR after processing the image
file. A
dialog box will appear for you to name the file and save it where you
want
it. You can then open the file in Notepad from where it is stored.

I have had success using programs to change the PDF to TIF files and
then
using the Microsoft Document Writer to extract the text into a document,
but
this program actually gave me better results and worked faster.

If you have the Microsoft Document Image Writer installed you can do the
following:

1. Open the PDF file in the Adobe Reader and you will hear alert:
empty
document.

2. Press CTRL+P to go into the print dialog box.

3. Use tab key to the list of printers and then use up or down arrow
keys
to find the Microsoft Document Image Writer choice and press enter
key.

4. A SaveAs box will appear with .TIF shown in the file types list.
Name
the file and save it as a TIF file.

5. Open all programs from the start menu, open the Microsoft office
group,
open the Office tools, and use down arrow to the choice for Microsoft
office
Document Imaging. Press enter on that choice.

6. Press alt+T to go into the tools menu and press enter key on the
recognize text using OCR choice.

7. A dialog box will appear where you can tell the program to recognize
all
pages. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

8. Wait for processing to finish.

9. Press Alt+T again and use down arrow to the send text to Word
choice
and press enter key.

10.Use tab a couple of times and find out what the default location for
the
document will be and then tab to OK and press enter key.

11.Wait for the file to open in Microsoft Word.

Although using the Microsoft Document Image Writer has worked for me, I
have
had better output using the FreeOCR program. It is also easier to use
and
you only need to use the one program.

Take care.

Hello Malisa,

If you only want to rip the dvd and get it into other formats, you can
rip it with windows mediaplayer version 11 into one of the formats of
which there are several to choose from, e.g. mp3 or wma.

Then you can convert that file with the free or paid version of switch
to different other formats.

The paid version allows more options than the free one, but the switch
program is accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] silenceing jaws speech

2010-04-21 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello,

I haven't followed this thread from the start, so don't know whether
this has been suggested, but another way of silencing jaws, is to press
control with s with the long insert, also called the jaws key and then
the letter n for no speech.

To get speech back, press control s with jaws and e for elloquence, or
if you're on version 10 and later, p for the primary default profile, or
whatever letter, if you want to use a different profile you've
previously set up.

Re: [JAWS-Users] converting pdf files to audio?

2010-04-14 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Ann,

In OB 7, it's an option under the file menu save to audio. You have
the option to save a page range or single page and you can save to
either wav, or mp3 format.

It may take a few minutes or hours, depending on the document size.

Kurzweil has more options, like changing bitrates and to write to a cd.

Actually, Openbook does record Elequence onto MP3 formatted files, if
you
set it to record the text into either WAV or MP3, its your choice.

I hope this helps, I had the program as a demo, that's how I know.

There may be some software out there but one off the cuff way to do
this
and I don't know if it would work but...
Open .pdf file using scanning software.
I think scanning software like Openbook reads PDF files better.
File is read using synthesized voice, eloquence, sappy...
You can then record the synthesized reading using a digital recorder.
You now have a audio file on your recorder that you can copy to your
PC.
I know that you can go from speech to text using Dragon or similar
software but don't know if there are other ways.

As

and
netbook computers as a back up. We setup the wireless connection on
these
three computers through time warner cables road runner service and
everything seemed to be working fine up until a few days ago. However
on
sunday, when i turned on my laptop computer too try and download my
email,
there was no wireless connection. What I want to know here, is it
possible
that the wireless connection could some how have been deleted? or just
the
email account which was also setup when we established on both the
netbook
and laptop computers. One more thing which I should note here, is that
I'm
able too get on too the net from the laptop computer, and probablythe
netbook as well, but I'm just wondering if I'll have too resetup my
email
account on my laptop and netbook again, though I'm not sure as that's
why
I'm asking for advice and suggestions from members on this list. I'm
using

Hello David,

If you're just hearing a sound, then it may be that the person hasn't
yet tried to add you, but just calls you and if you're on a different
call at that stage, it wouldn't have the ordinary ringing tone, but just
a regular blieb sound.

You can add or reject such call via the menus, although it's several
keystrokes and I don't know them, or if you could get to the person's
name in the skype window, I think entering on it will answer such call,
depending on what your skype settings are.

The story is that JAWS 9.0.2191U is fully compatible with IE 8. I have
been
using this combination with no problems. The only issue I have
encountered
is that the JAWS read address bar command, Insert-A does not work.

 Hi people,

I'm using Jaws 9.0.2191, and I'd like the definitive and accurate
answer
as to whether this version of Jaws is fully compatible with I.E. 8. I

thought it was, but then I saw an I.E. 8 tutorial the other day which
stated one needed Jaws 10 to run I.E. 8.

 So, what's the story?

[JAWS-Users] How to transfer outlook folders?

2010-01-19 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Listers,

I have about 40 folders in my outlook 2003 inbox.

Using jaws 9 or 10, how can I back up all the pst files, [that's what
someone told me it falls under], to an external hard drive, as I cannot
find it's destination with a file search?

Secondly, how does one restore the said email folders, also the
addressbook, on a different computer, retaining all the saved email
messages?

Thanks and regards,

Hello Brian,

Thanks for the detailed instructions.

I'm not currently at the pc where I need to do this, but will try it
tonight.
Just one point I need clarification on:
If one has different email profiles, do you have to do this for every
profile separately, or do the data files you mentioned, include the
information for all profiles from within the mail settings in the
control panel?

I'm still using MS outlook 2003.

Hello Riana,

You can find the location of your .PST files by going under your control
panel, opening the mail choice, and then tabbing to the data files
button
and depressing it by using the spacebar. Use tab key to move through
the
dialog box until you find a list of your .PST files and their location.
You
will likely have an archive.PST, Outlook.PST, perhaps a backup.PST and
maybe
others. If I remember correctly, the path for them is c:\documents and
settings\userName\local settings\Microsoft\Outlook. However, the data
files
button should bring up the mail setup dialog that has the list of
files
and locations.

You can import .PST files or comma separated value files using the
import
wizard in Outlook. It can be found in the file menu. Choose to import
from
another program or file and you will find a list of the supported file
types
and programs from which Outlook will import. Outlook Express 6, CSV
Windows, and PST are among those types.

You can also import addresses from Outlook Express if you choose to
import
Internet mail and addresses. You will get choices for importing
messages,
addresses, etc. Choices will be in the form of checkboxes.

There is also an import/export wizard that can be activated by using
the
export/import file menu choice while in Outlook contacts.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Texting via the web

2009-12-16 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello,

In South-Africa it only works to send a message from a pc via email, to
be received as sms on a cel phone, when entering the number in the
username section of the email address, followed by the @ sign and the
provider, but one can only enter the message in the subject field, not
in the body.

Of course, if the person using the phone sets up his email on the cel
phone, you could just use ordinary email from your pc and will receive
the response as such, with the advantage that there's no limitation on
the size, also it goes through as data, which is cheaper if one doesn't
have a sms bundle included on one's monthly cel phone package.

Also, with the skype beta, now available for third generation cel
phones, it is said that the chat option is accessible via both Talks and
Mobile speak.

Thus you could use jaws on your pc to, via the skype chat function, send
a chat (or instant message, as referred to in some skype versions) to
any of your skype contacts in the world, and vice versa, to be read on
their computers or cel phones.

Riana

Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf

2009-12-10 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hi Caroline,

Yes, I can think of at least three ways one would be able to do this.

To make this related to jaws, I'll mention the most amateurish
method first.

Any version of jaws, I believe from 7 upwards, that will work with
either sappy 5 human sounding voices, or the e-speak voices. Which are
free, or real speak voices, and eloquence too, of course, could be used
to open the pdf file in adobe acrobat reader and via the say all
feature, read it in the preferred voice of your choice, while recording
it via a program like CDEX, in mp3 format. I don't have the necessary
cables to test direct recording at present, but you should be able to do
it with some line in cable, I think, rather than with an open
microphone, but I have experimented recording via a microphone, reading
via jaws 9 and 10.

It sounds good via the solo direct, but also ordinary non-proprietary
real speak voices, used via jaws.

With kurzweil you could save a document you have opened and performed
OCR on, if necessary, including a pdf document, into mp3 directly via
the save to audio option and you can choose the quality of the mp3 file.

When saving, it must be set to the relevant voice, which basically
amounts to any voice installed on your computer at the time and
accessible to Kurzweil. You could thus also adjust the speed before
saving.

You could do the same via openbook, although upto version 7.2, openbook
can't utilize sappy 5 voices.

There are also mainstream programs like text aloud, that will save text
to mp3, but I have not experimented with that.

Riana

It also works to, when in the windows listview folder of the relevant

it starts to play the audio files from the top, sequentially to the

Hi. I've found that moving to the bottom of the list and selecting
using
the shift and up arrow will make Winamp play the list from beginning to
end.

For example, I'm currently reading a book that has several CDs. Each
file
was divided into 12 or thirteen tracks, but all files are in the same
folder. I have disc 1 Track 1, and the last file for the first CD is
Disc 1
Track 13.

To play that CD, I arrowed to Disc 1 Track 13, Pressed the shift key
with
the up arrow, and moved to Disc 1 Track one. Then I pressed Enter and
Winamp began playing.

I can then fast forward or rewind by track or use the left and right
arrow
to move five seconds backward or forward.

This also works in music folders.

Hope this helps.

I only know that you can definitely use sappi 5 voices with jaws 8, but
if both sappi 4 and 5 voices are installed on your pc, you have to

I can't recall off hand whether you only set this in windows own speech

settings, probably somewhere under individual voice settings.

Re: [JAWS-Users] SAPI 4 voices

2009-10-30 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hi Mike,

Installation of jaws 8 and higher uninstalls the viavoice application
which, I was told, was a sappi 4 voice, that Openbook 7 and lower and
version 10 and lower of Kurzweil, used and this is a known fact, for
which I can vouch.

So probably the said jaws installation uninstalls, or disables, the
other sappi 4 voices too.

I overcame this hassle with openbook 7, by uninstalling it and
re-installing it after having installed jaws and it happens with every
new installation of the later jaws versions.

It may be the installation of the particular later version of
elloquence, rather than jaws, as I know from the Kurzweil list that the
other screenreader users also had a conflict with the version of
elloquence that earlier jaws and window eyes used, but, it definitely
has that effect with jaws.

Regards,

Riana

Hi Riana David,

Thank you very much for your responses. I think that I misspoke when

Jaws detect SAPI 4 voices in the Jaws context menu, all of the sudden
Jaws

in
another application when I select to use the SAPI 4 synthesizer, I get a

I am not sure that Jaws has ever shipped with alternative Sapi 4
voices
though Eloquence is I think technically Sapi 4. I came in at Jaws 6 so
do
not know what happened before then. Jaws 8 did have a CD with
Scansoft
realspeak Sapi 5 Voices before the development of real solo direct.

Sapi 4 voices normally came with other applications or were bought
specifically as stand alone synthesisers. For example I bought the
Natural
voices synthesiser which installed in both Sapi 4 and 5 versions at
the
same time. If I wanted to use the Sapi 4 version I needed to run Sapi
4
detect on Jaws. Before Jaws 10 the ability to group Sapi 4 voices in a
synthesiser was useful as you could create a sort of profile of a set
of
Natural Voices by switching to the Natural voices synthesiser . If
you
have
jaws 10 or 11 you do not need to do this because of the ability to
create
as
many voice Profiles as you like.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I dismiss the Winamp Update message?

Hi Dale,

There is a winamp listif you want to join?

I'm not at my home pc at present to verify the address, but if I recall

starts with a capital letter.

If you can obtain the subscription syntax to a freelists list, you'd be
able to join.

Also, I believe Chris Holswith, who is also on this list, is also a
member of that list and is very knowledgeable about winamp.

Can you close it with control plus F4 or control tab to the main

Also if it is the update prompt I'm thinking of you can go to General

Hi Hugh,

This could be because you have more than one email account, or more than
one profile set up for the same email account.

The steps to combine the two is intricate and I can't recall that off
hand, alternatively, just delete the email account/profile you don't
use, from within the mail settings under control panel.

The settings are accessible with all jaws versions.

Hello Burt,

I don't use OE, but I use Jaws 8, 9 and 10 on different computers, with
sappi 5 and outlook, MS Word, notepad and Kurzweil respectively and
apart from on one pc where it keeps changing to sapi 5, a specific
espeak voice when on the web with internet explorer, still version 6,
even though the default is set to eloquence, I don't have that problem.

It does however not change back to eloquence, or the other way round,

Could it perhaps be that your menu voice is still set to eloquence,

[JAWS-Users] Automatic updates

2009-10-16 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Alan,

Under the windows update settings via the control panel, there are, I
think, four options.

You apparently know how to get to that, as you've disabled automatic
updates, but change that option to the one that says something like:
notify me about updates but don't download automatically.

Then, I suppose when you've restarted your pc, you'll probably have a
pop up window, telling you there are new updates.

Press jaws key with function key 11 to get in the system tray, don't
route jaws to pc, it's not necessary and probably won't work right then,
but just arrow to new updates, where you enter.

Use your up and down arrows to find out what the updates are and ensure
that everything apart from internet explorer 8 is checked.

Uncheck the latter with the space bar.

Then tab to ok or download.

You'll get a prompt on whether you want to hide the updates you haven't
checked, to cancel or to be asked later.

You probably want to hide them and/or not to be asked again.

download and after the download, if you're not specifically prompted,
go to the system tray again and under new updates, enter on install.

Now you'll be prompted, probably about once a month, that there are new
updates, which you then install in the same way via the system tray and
just make sure that internet explorer 8, if it ever comes up again,
[which does happen on my pc about every three months] is unchecked, as
indicated and install the rest.

Don't worry further about wrong installations then, it works as
specified.

Riana

Hello Josh and David,

Sorry, but this is incorrect.

All jaws versions one installs, create an icon on the desktop, so if you
have nothing else on the desktop starting with a j, pressing that letter
when on the desktop, will select jaws and you can then just enter.

So without speech, pressing windows key with m, then j and then enter,
should run jaws.

You don't have to create a different hotkey.

2009-09-08 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Larry,

I'm using the same versions of operating systems and programs than you
and have been using nod32 now for almost three years, without a problem
and apparent good results.

It's not free however, but you don't have to re-install anything when
buying upgrades for a further year or two years.

If memory serves, I think you only have to replace the new code and
password.

However, I did not personally install the program initially and cannot
comment on the accessibility of that process.

Nod32 is also the virus scanning program FS recommends for use with
Openbook and Jaws and it also doesn't interfere with Kurzweil 1000.

It's said to be more reliable than AVG and is less draining on memory
resources than Norden.

[JAWS-Users] Further to music notation

2009-09-02 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Listers,

I don't know how accessible the below is with jaws and the linux speakup
screenreader, but it was also mentioned as possibility on the accessible
music notation thread and perhaps merits further experimentation for
those interested:

Freedots takes a electronic music notation file (musicxml) in as input

and produce braille music notation for printing on a braille embosser or

reading on a braille display. It is also able to playback a piece with

your sound card.

Musicxml is a standard music notation format that can be exported with

most optical music recognition programs e.g. finale.

Freedots is still very early in development, it was only started at the

end of last year I think. According to the website, not all braille

music functions are implemented yet. It is however an open source

project so with a lot of input from us blind braille music users it

should become quite good.

Riana

Just a side note on this topic of computer based music notation, a

freedots which converts musicxml notation format to braille music.

http://delysid.org/freedots.html

It's written in java so it should run on most systems. I think you can

download a windows installer also. You can test it with one of the

musicxml scores from project gutenberg.

version 2 E, under windows 3.1 and probably up to windows 98, as
openbook could use that card to produce the dectalk voices, but that was
still in an older pc.

If you have a regular dectalk express, you may be able to utilize those
voices through that, however, not the Vert Prose 4000 card's internal
attractive voice, though.

Regards,

Riana

I in fact have an old board with the software sitting in a drawer
because
unfortunately it is no longer of any use for the past 14 years for me at

least. To answer your question I do not believe so.

Anyone remember the old Personal Vert screen reader from back in the DOS
days? I have a couple of those synthesizers around here and I'm
wondering
if any version of JAWS supports that speech board? Help?
Thanks.
Howard

Re: [JAWS-Users] supported synthesizers?

2009-08-31 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello Listers,

Further to my previous message, there was a version of jaws available
for dos. I've never used it, but if you could find a pc in which the
relevant speech card could fit, you could perhaps try it out. I think
it's still on fs's site. And I don't think it was a paid version. I
don't have an idea what version it was and it would probably not have
been updated.

Regards

Riana

Hello Howard and David,

I also have a Vert prose 4000 speech card, also in a shelf, as it's too
wide to fit in the relevant card slots of any pc I could find to
purchase for the past ten years or more.

I was still able to use the card with an old version of openbook,
version 2 E, under windows 3.1 and probably up to windows 98, as
openbook could use that card to produce the dectalk voices, but that was
still in an older pc.

If you have a regular dectalk express, you may be able to utilize those

attractive voice, though.

Riana
