No, but I'm guessing it will be a bit on the heavy side for a KR1,
even with a light engine.

No plywood on the fuselage. Foam center with two layers of glass on
the outside and one layer of glass on the inside.

Dennis asked for feedback and one of my several observations and
suggestions was to remove the brackets and cut lightening holes in
the ribs. Several other areas of minor overbuild but overall I can't
fault his workmanship.

ok no retracts, duh, shoulda gone back and looked. ideally I'd like
to build a tri-retract, original size KR1, with engine back against
the firewall as original, and with a normalizing turbocharger. the
main retracts are easy. the nose can swing back halfway into a center
pocket (I think). as to a small normalizing turbocharger, tight
squeeze and heat issues. which is why it would most likely be added
later, in a phase two.

point being, I am happy to see some added complexity is possible with
enough thought and skill!

Well I must say Dennis is building very different from what is normally
seen. The photos bring up a lot of questions. You may have mentioned it
before, but is the sides of this fuselage fiberglass instead of plywood? Also
are the rib to spar shelf brackets temporary? Neat canopy. I am thinking
this guy has built things other than airplanes before. Great that he is
building in a basement just like me!! Probably shouldn't have invited him
to this group as it may corrupt him. I like that he has done so much
without feedback, that he is building trike gear, and that he is building the
best KR. A KR1.

The folding wing is a one man process: remove the pins, pull the wing
panel outboard (it is spring loaded) and rotate it to the rear.

It will fly with a 2si 70 hp two cycle water cooled engine. The
builder is this far along in just 13 months and hopes to be flying by
midsummer. I'm pushing him to make Lee Summitt but that will be a
stretch so to those attending, this will be your last chance for any

I encouraged Dennis to join the net so you may be able to e-mail him

Vintage 1970s KR-1 Aircraft, known as "The Eagle" was built in Ione, CA by the

was flown in Ione and at Rancho Murietta Airport; but is now stored. Includes
dash instruments, VW engine, detached wings. Needs some TLC and would make a
great EAA restoration project. Serious inquiries only. Transportation not

I thought a neat engine for the KR would be the Yamaha Genesis (Vector
snowmobile) engine. 120-150 HP in a tiny 4 stroke package. There is even a
commercial conversion adapter being made for it now that adapts the Rotax
gearbox to the engine. I think the running weight is somewhere around 160 lbs.
Not sure if that includes radiator.

Look at the krnet. Lynn Hyder put an o235 on his modified kr2. I saw it a few
months ago at his daughters house in SW Portland. Wings were sawed off. He was
trying to sell the engine.

I don't know of one, but Richard Shirley has a 3300 Jabiru on his KR-1,
which is essentially the same power, but lighter. Some weight in the
tail would be required, and the wing loading would be high, and landing
speed correspondingly higher than with a lighter engine. But that's
essentially what I plan on doing, with more wing area and a longer tail
to tame pitch sensitivity. Loads of fun would be assured, as well as
200 mph plus, straight and level.

Steve Trentmans's turbine KR-2T has flown plenty, but it's a
gas-guzzler, at something like 12 gph. There are details from Steve at

KR> KR-1 or single seat KR-2S

2015-01-06 Thread laser147 at juno.com
Jeff said,

"Despite Paul's criticism, the VW powerplant works pretty well. Mike
Stirewalt, who will undoubtedly chime in here, owns the KR 1 1/2, built
by Ken Cottle, then sold to Steve Bennett, then to Mike. If I recall
correctly, it is a stock KR-2 that is narrowed a bit to make a
comfortable single seat cockpit. I know Mike likes to fly it high and
long and it performs reasonably well. Build it light and clean."

That's all true, almost. Ken Cottle built this KR-1? from KR-1 plans,
widening the fuselage to 24" (I think it's 24" - could be 30" - losing my
memory) at the cockpit. He lengthened it 7 inches ahead of the spar for
additional leg room since Ken's a tall guy. I imagine the extra leg room
is one reason Steve Bennett wanted this plane. Ken added 14" to the
rear. Ken narrowed the stub wings a bit from plans and then used Diehl
skins and tail feathers. Looking at receipts this afternoon I saw the
receipt (3/2/86) for the wing skins - $800. Tailfeathers from Diehl were
$450. Wingspan is 20' 8" and yes, this plane loves flying high thanks to
the nice wing area and the GP 2180 has no problem with high altitude
airports. It has an EFS-2 Ellison carb and currently a Sterba 52'x56"
prop that allows the engine to run full throttle at 3100 at altitude
(10.5 to 14.5) where it cruises at 149 MPH at 3.5 to 4 GPH. Fuel on
board is 21 gallons. I've never gotten around to narrowing my cooling
inlets so I'm carrying a ton of cooling drag - pushing air back out the
front. Probably get at least another 5 MPH if I ever do that. I should
have modified my cooling inlets a long time ago.

There's nothing to criticise about the VW, either Great Plains or
Revmaster. GP engines are less expensive to maintain since Revmaster is
proprietery with some engine components. A nice Corvair with that
additional bearing and an Ellison carb would be a truly wonderful smooth
engine for little money. But my plane came with what it's got and it
flies beautifully.

Setting a KR-2 up as a single-seater is a great idea though. Look at
George McHenry's adaptation for perhaps the most luxurious example. That
extra room in the cockpit and on the panel is nice.

My first KR, a standard KR-2 which I sold in 1989, had sling seats and a
center stick. I used to sit in the center and enjoy the head room and
space on each side for charts & other stuff. When I occasionally took
someone flying in it, it was not much fun except for short local flights.
I'm sure the S is a big improvement with two up.

KR> KR-1 drawings missing from plans

2013-06-28 Thread Tim Hoversten
Greetings from OSH!

I purchased a set of KR-1 plans from Jeanette Rand in Feb of 2009, and am
getting ready to start building. I was reviewing the plans booklet and
revisions, and noticed there are some drawings that are missing.?

On page 22, step 8.1.1 refers to drawing #9 concerning rudder pedals and pg 25,
step 8.1.5 refers to rudder cables and nicopress fittings, also on drawing #9.

On page 49, steps 14.2 and 14.9 refer to back up plates in the firewall area
and to drawing #13

Also on page 49, step 14.9 refers to drawing #14, regarding engine mounts and
mounting hardware.

Is there any way to get drawings 9, 13 and 14 for the KR-1?

If you would be in the market for a boat stage KR1 that has been done
rite with tons of extras, ( Sort of as a parts spare ) I have almost
everything you need to finish the air frame. At a price that could
save you several thousand. And I might even be able to deliver it
for just travel expenses. This could be a cheap way to put your
restoration into fast forward. And I guarantee you won't be
disappointed with the workmanship on this project.

Look to see just what the top and bottom spar material is. As long as it is
Stica Spruce or Clear Doug Fur. You will be fine. You can use a power hand
planner and remove the web on both sides. As l have done this very same
thing but only to one side and just at the end. So I just used a power hand
planner and removed the web. The smaller the cut the more control you
have. Don't get in a hurry.

Of coarse, this is only the case as long as any other webbing on the project
(fuselage) is correct. don't think you can correct the fuselage by
glassing it. That is just no good and it adds unneeded weight. So if the
fuselage is wrong, it will be good fire wood this winter. But check out any
other installed webbing to see that it is installed correctly before
thinking you have something that can be worked.

That was a good spot. I'm not sure how many folks would have caught
that error. Is the center section spar installed in the fuselage
already? Have the spars run through a planer and remove the ply,
check the woodwork and rebuild.

If you have "grave concerns"about the airplane you may never
really be comfortable with it. Getting a second or third opinion

spend your time on a project more to your liking.

Netter's,

As most of you know, we took over operations from RR this past year.  So one
can imagine there has been some growing pains while attempting to get things
moving again.  Between a blown out knee, moving in and out of hangars for
due to potential flooding, and now with moving into a larger facility in
attempt to streamline and be more productive, this has been a HUGE
undertaking.   We are working diligently to get the remaining orders out
that we have and anticipate having everything caught up by the end of the
year or shortly after depending on temperatures for the glass work. (Thank
you for your patience to those we have outstanding orders with)

Currently there is myself, and my partner Eric primarily doing EVERYTHING
for production!  We do not have enough revenue to hire employees as there
still is not enough volume as we attempt to reenergize the KR design in the
homebuilt community.  This IS NOT our primary method for making a living.
Eric is still on active duty with the US Navy and lives a couple hours away.
He is instrumental in taking care of all website and administrative duties
for nV Aero. He travels to the hangar to help with production, etc. when his
time permits based upon his current Op Temp.  Otherwise, production is
basically me.  I do the ordering, stocking, fabricating and any other gopher
jobs required.  We have some items contracted out such as welding, precision
machining, etc.

Eric and I have a desire to provide quality, affordable parts and materials
for people to build their KR aircraft.  We certainly didn't get into this to
get rich.  The first thing to understand is nV Aero does not own the rights
to the plans for any of the KR aircraft. Jeanette has a price that she sells
the plans to us. Based upon that price we charge enough to cover our
shipping and administrative costs (picking up plans from RR which is 40
miles away, and other expenses associated with packaging and shipping.)  Due
to printing costs Jeanette has raised the price of the KR-1 plans to us.
The drawings and additional copies she provides are at current market rates
from the printers.  The book is the same as everyone else has received for
the past several years but those are rapidly running out so I anticipate
another increase once the current inventory is depleted.

This brings me to Mr. Caudle's post.  I do feel he should have contacted me
first before posting to the net with his "displeasure".  I think I addressed
it fairly well above but let me be clear, WE buy the plans for $95.  We sell
at $114.95.  We found that is easier for flat rate shipping for our shopping
cart system due to the various destinations in the US and abroad.  So, $25
for "shipping" less up to 6% for credit card processing if a Corporate card
is used. This leaves us $108.05. Subtract $5.70 for Priority Mail with
delivery confirmation leaves $102.35 less $95 for RR leaves us $7.35 for our
time to pick up plans from RR, print packing lists (The packing list was
with Mr. Caudle's registration page), registration pages, package and get
them to the post office or however we ship.  Clearly we are making a TON of
money for the hassle.

I am a little displeased myself with Mr. Caudle's post given our original
correspondence.  Nothing was misleading when he inquired about the plans and
their quality. I guess I should have been VERY specific as to the additional
pages showing the new dimensions from the KR-2 changes with drawings instead
of photos. You can see my email to him below.

BEGIN MSG.
"Dear Mr. Caudle,

Thank you for your inquiry into the KR-1.  I have not seen the Corby Starlet
plans so could not comment on how they compare however, there have been
several hundred KR-1's build over the years.  The KR-1 plans were drawn in
the 70's and have a builders manual with approximately 64 pages. The full
size drawings are for the airfoil only.  Dimensionally the additional photos
and measurements in the manual are pretty clear.  One positive thing
regarding the KR series is the builder support is outstanding.  The KR-net
has about 600 members and answers to most of your are readily available.  Of
course you can contact us as well.   I will work on converting a copy of a
page from the plans to send to you."
END.

Keep in mind these plans were written a very long time ago.   To

Eric and I have a desire to provide quality, affordable parts and materials
for people to build their KR aircraft. We certainly didn't get into this
to
get rich. The first thing to understand is nV Aero does not own the
rights
to the plans for any of the KR aircraft. Jeanette has a price that she
sells
the plans to us. Based upon that price we charge enough to cover our
shipping and administrative costs (picking up plans from RR which is 40
miles away, and other expenses associated with packaging and shipping.)
Due
to printing costs Jeanette has raised the price of the KR-1 plans to us.

I think I
addressed
it fairly well above but let me be clear, WE buy the plans for $95. We
sell
at $114.95. We found that is easier for flat rate shipping for our
shopping
cart system due to the various destinations in the US and abroad. So, $25
for "shipping" less up to 6% for credit card processing if a Corporate card
is used. This leaves us $108.05. Subtract $5.70 for Priority Mail with
delivery confirmation leaves $102.35 less $95 for RR leaves us $7.35 for
our
time to pick up plans from RR, print packing lists (The packing list was
with Mr. Caudle's registration page), registration pages, package and get
them to the post office or however we ship. Clearly we are making a TON
of
money for the hassle.

I am a little displeased myself with Mr. Caudle's post given our original

2010-10-18 Thread tinya...@aol.com
I have KR plans purchased directly from Jeanette. I gave her $60 I think
it was, and she gave me the plans in person. As odd as this may sound, I
didn't buy my KR drawings because I was wanting a KR. I buy plans mostly as
a collector, used more for education. I am a member of the KR group
because I enjoy the groups activity, the "get-r-done" attitude, and the ideas
that come from the members as they build their aircraft. The KR has evolved
into something other than what the plans offer. I don't think you want to
build either a KR1 or 2 without a HUGE dose of internet research, going to
the yearly fly-in, or visiting one on one with those who have been there.
If you don't do at least 2 of the three you will be sorry down the line.

What do I think of the plans? I think I could build a rocket ship of an
airplane from them using the new airfoil. To power the airplane I would use
the 120 HP Yamaha Vector snowmobile engine like is being used in the
gyrocopters. I bet it would cruise well past redline.

What am I building? Streak Shadow from an old kit. I want to fly from my
property (short) and be able to cruise at least 100 mph. I have my eyes
on the Yamaha for this airplane too. Same weight/size as the Geo metro, but
twice the power.

If a KR is what you want, then a KR you shall have. There is massive
amount of information out there. I have never met a person who isn't willing
to share their construction work.

Go to it.

At this point I don't know if I have everything I need to build the

I have a sinking feeling I wasted $139.00. I thought my Corby plans left

As I'm building a KR-1 (kinda) I may be able to help out here.
I don't have the whole inventory listing of what you have, but I can tell
you what came with mine...

Builders "Manual" (roughly 70 pages or so... don't quote me on the
number).
Supplement pack of drawings (some of which are indeed labeled with KR-2,
because they are common)
Misc package with W info, kit pricing, etc...

I didn't get mine from Steve (bought in 2003), but I'm assuming they are
probably still the same.

No, they aren't the most detailed and informative plans there, but after
you read through them a couple times,
you get the idea.  There is enough information to build the plane, even if
you have to deduce some of the figures for
yourself.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me an email.

1)   Shipping and Handling cost $25.00 for a package the USPS shipped for $6.00
2)   No packing list.
3)   Several prints labeled KR-2...
4)   6 pages missing from the instruction manual.

At this point I don't know if I have everything I need to build the aircraft or
not.
I have a sinking feeling I wasted $139.00.  I thought my Corby plans left
something
to be desired.  After paging through the KR-1 plans I will never say a bad word
about the Corby prints again!

I ran across a post in the archive that advised purchasing the KR-2 plans to
supplement
the KR-1 plans.  It sure seems a shame to have to spend an additional $204.95
plus $25.00 for shipping to get what you need to build the craft...  Is any one
else having this issue?

Respectfully,

Very impressive posting!

Lost designs that bothered me was the Charles Fauvel designs. The AV361
is the only design that survived the loss of Charles. Story goes that the
widow of Charles Fauvel actually burned all of his drawings when he died.

Free aircraft drawings can be downloaded here:

While illegality may be defined by the strict letter, damages are not.
Damages by copyright infringement are determined mostly by loss
or decrease in revenues. When a copyright holder no longer is
selling or servicing, you might be infringing on copyright but
not imflicting harm as defined by the copyright statutes.

There are many instances in the world of aviation where the good
of the community overrides strict compliance with the law
such that the moral thing to do may not equate to the lagal thing.

Consider the loss of designs where the copyright owners are
deceased or cannot be found. In those situations you have
to ask who is being harmed by the reproduction of such designs
while breaking the law. As with most things, common sense is required.

Hundreds if not thousands of avaition designs are now lost because
of the copyright issues and it is tragic.

It is sickening to look through 20, 30 and 40 year old magazines
and see how many great little planes have disappeared along with
the hard earned knowledge of their designers.

For instance about ten years ago ( before the old and long time
librarian
retired )I inquired at the EAA and they
had sixty sets of blueprints for designs that had been donated
that were restriced to mere looking at without any kind of copying
taking place. The restrictions were not limited to copyright
but also the new lawyers fear that if you built a plane
from the knowledge obtained they feared liability.
What the heck is the EAA all about anyway ?

2009-05-26 Thread Tony King
I can sympathise with Mike in one aspect - trying to do business with RR is
very frustrating. I tried for several months with faxes, phone calls, etc.
and never got any response. In the end I gave up and some time later I
bought a set of KR2S plans from a KRNet member who was selling his (genuine
and unused) set.

However, whether or not the plans are readily available from RR isn't
actually relevant. They're the intellectual property of RR and RR can
choose to do whatever they want with them - including never selling them to
anyone. That still doesn't make it legal for anyone else to violate the
copyright. It's the same thing as if you refuse to sell me your car so I go
and take it. You have no obligation to sell me your car and RR has no
obligation to sell KR plans. If they decide to provide lousy service (which
was my experience), they're perfectly within their rights and if you or I
don't like that we are under no obligation to deal with them. If that means
you then can't build a KR, that's the way it is. It's not an excuse for
ripping them off.

Scott Perkins wrote:

Sure they're still available. See http://www.fly-kr.com/kr1.htm for how to
order, and http://www.fly-kr.com/ for the phone/fax number. The best (and
perhaps only) way to get them is send a check for the proper amount
(including shipping) and you'll get them eventually.

They are not the most detailed plans you'll ever see, but what would you
expect for $60? Most folks agree that there are lots of ambiguities in the
plans, but people manage to build them just the same. Even the KR-2 plans
have more detail, and they are not famous for detail.

They are apparently available from Rand Robinson because the "logic" behindd
Mike Walling posting them to the web in three different places was because:

"I'm putting the plans on the net because I'm irritated at how long it took
the get the plans from Rand Robinson, there was no chance of telephone
correspondance and I was irritated by the serious lack of quality in the
plans. "

I was stuck in an airliner when this email came across the list, but as soon
as I read it, I unsubscribed the guy. We don't need people like that on
this list. He's permanently banned. I don't like to do that because it
levels real safety concerns on builders, but in Mike's case, I made an
exception. He then signed back on with another address, which took me about
5 seconds to ascertain that it was him, and unsubscribed that one. The
downside for him may be that I now know where he works and his employer's
email address. KRnet is now a closed list which will require authorization
to join, starting Sunday.

I've visited the links he provided in his email, and his comments are
deplorable. I can't post what he said, but basically he's deliberately
encouraging any and all comers to download and spread the plans around.
Here's what he wrote:

>>I got kicked off of the KRnet.org mailing list
for this torrent and I make no apologies. I Figure I'll buy the next set
of plans and post them just as a F--- You<< (letters replaced by dashes by
ML)

This guy Mike appears to have a huge chip on his shoulder, and I personally
would consider him to have emotional problems, or perhaps he's really only 8
years old. I've exchanged several emails with him, and he apparently has no
concept of what "intellectual property" is, although he may be enlightened
when Jeannette's daughter the attorney contacts him. Failing that, there's
always "bad karma"...

The KR-1 plans are available from Rand Robinson.

They are $65.

Delivery runs from 3-8 weeks, depending on a variety of factors.

The plans are as complete and accurate as they have ever been. They are
more complete and accurate than the original versions, as they come with
many revisions that have been incorporated over the years.

They are not, and probably never will be, as complete as the later 2 and 2S
plans, hence the difference in price.

Well, Mike, the guy who posted the plans to the web wrote:

Which I interpret to mean that he eventually got them, and is one of the two
sets he scanned and made available to whoever wants to download them. Or
you could do the RIGHT thing and send a check to the address at
www.fly-kr.com (plans prices are there as well).

I'll probably have a lot more to say on this later, but suffice it to say
that Mike's been unsubscribed and banned from the list. I don't like doing
that because I consider it to be a safety issue when you cut somebody off
from the list, but in his case, I've certainly made an exception.

As for quality, the plans are ancient and leave a lot to the imagination
(even more than the KR-2 plans), but as many have said before, a plane can
be built from them. I own a set myself, which I bought and paid for.

To copy someone's plans is stealing.  Why not just order them  and pay the
small price they cost.  Then you can feel good about the whole thing when your

GOOD DEAL!

KR information should be public domain anyway.  The  original KR is
outdated to the point they are more of a GUIDE than  PLANS.   I believe this
"loyalty" is misguided and silly.  There  is a Yahoo group that has a bunch of
free downloadable plans from years past and  this might be a good place for the
KR plans.  This site can be found  here:

_http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250_
(http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/cfair/?yguid=62311250)

Bottom line:  I don't think if the plans are given away  free that more KRs
will be built.  The plans cost is so tiny compared to  the overall cost of
the project

Also, I already have KR1 plans bought from Jeanette nearly 10  years ago.

I'm also thinking that I'll post  it on a file sharing website like

all of the manuals and  prints required for the KR-1.  There are actually 2

plans is  lacking so there is a B and Colour set.  I'm planning  on
digitally retouching all of the older prints both for clarity and also  so
they can be compressed more, for ease of downloading.

I'm putting  the plans on the net because I'm irritated at how long it took

KR> KR-1 Plans Available

2009-05-22 Thread tinya...@aol.com

Yes, She could be a little quicker, but then she is fast compared to
some. If she were to go with CC company, then she would have to increase
the price. I am sure she is like some of the older folks on cell phones
and computers... she dont want the change, and dont want to learn
something new.

I purchased my first set of plans back in 1982. There was a 3 week wait.
I never did build off from them and they became unreadable from sitting
out in the light. In 2007, I ordered my 2nd set, and included the S
revision. Believe it or not, she remembered me after all them years, and
gave the plans to me at a update price, plus the S addition. It took me
1 month to get them. Between this group, and my KR2 Sport group, there
is enough information out there for any configuration that you may want
to build. You just have to have a little Patients to get the plans...
Take Care...

I covered this at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kopinion.html , but to
save you the trouble, I'd still use the airfoils to get a more effective
tail, but only 6' long, if my fuselage were longer.

Despite all the conversation about pitch sensitive KRs, mine's very stable.
Even my 10 year old daughter didn't do PIO's (pilot induced oscillations)
the first time she flew it. I don't think anybody has that's flown it so
far (that's about 8 folks that I can remember). The forward CG is also a

Maybe I missed part of a conversation or something...
I don't have my "plans" in front of me, but from what I recall the
stock KR-1 fuselage is only about 19" wide on the inside,
 not 38.75".

Don't know about his gear.. Steve Glover may know off the top of his
head.

There is a lot of talk about how narrow this cockpit is but when I look
at the plans I'm seeing a 38.75 fuse width. Am I missing something?
Anyone know what gear Richard Shirly has on his KR1 ?

Thanks,

Anyone running the new airfoils on a KR1? I would guess they would work just as
well on a shorter wing..any opinions ??

Same thing I always say on this subjectthe AS series is almost a direct
replacement for the RAF48, so using the new airfoil will only get you less
drag and higher speed...

Jeanette may have been gone for the past week or so attending the
Gathering. She has family in the southern Illinois area and probably
extended her visit beyond the few days of the Gathering. I'm guessing
she will be home soon, if not already.

I have never had a problem getting a hold of Jeanette. She is in the
office mid mornings for a few hours to do paperwork, I don't remember if
it is every day or not. I think it is at least Mon, Wed, Fri. She will
call back but can't always contact the person leaving the message
either. Make sure you leave your phone number and what you want clearly
on the machine.
