[lace] IOLI Convention
Hello from Reno. I am un-lurking to say what a pleasure it was to meet with the Arachne group last night at the IOLI Convention. Thank you to Janice Blair for setting up the meeting. It was good to see people I first met in Arachne’s early days. I am enjoying Convention and taking Holly Van Sciver’s Honiton class. [lace] Fwd: Robin How silver bobbins?
-- Original Message -- From: "catherinebarley" To: "Arachne Lace" Sent: Monday, 12 Jun, 2023 At 12:25 Subject: Fwd: Robin How silver bobbins? I'm wondering if any of you have any of the Robin How silver bobbins from way back and have any idea how much we paid for them, as I've just unearthed seven of them and wondering what to do with them, along with quite a number of bobbin lace and needelace books long out of print. I have never cleaned the silver bobbins and had forgotten I had them until I discovered them yesterday morning, and they really are very dirty, but not sure about the smaller beads between the silver ones on the spangles and whether or not to dip them into the Goddards silver solution that I used to use to clean cutlery? The Mother and Babe one would have to be cleaned in the silver dip as it would be impossible to clean the tiny babe bobbin any other way! I've had no success yet with the books either so any suggestions would be gratefully received. See description of bobbins below. Seven solid silver lace bobbins bought years ago and which I had forgotten all about! They were made by Robin How, Bedfordshire and one of them No 305 of 500 was designed by Luton Museum and made by a Peter Phelan of Luton to commemorate the birth of a son to Princes Anne and Captain Mark Phillips 1977. I have one also by Robin How limited edition of 100 entitled Queen Victoria and a matching one, each No 068 of 100 entitled Queen Elizabeth I. A Silver Jubilee one 1977 and a Mother & Babe, Catherine of Aragon, Queen Anne, Anne Boleyn (all No 068 so guess they must have been a set of 6 Queens) and they all need a jolly good clean but not sure if I should pop them in some silver dip or not as some have beads on the bottom spangles which are not silver, but how else would one clean them? If any of you have some of these and can recall how much we paid for them or how too clean them, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks Ruth for the heads up about the schedule having a time for Arachne meeting at 6:30 for an hour, I hadn't noticed it.  This year I did not contact the host group but maybe one of the members is a member of Arachne, so we should plan on meeting there and if anyone wants to arrange a lunch gathering, they can do it there. Yes, if you have anything spidery, lacy or useful you would like to donate to our annual free raffle please bring it. RE: [lace] point ground with no gimp
Thanks to Jane Partridge and Adele Shaak for their replies to my conundrum. Adele is correct that Regency lace had no gimp on the outside, but did have gimp on the inside around little holes. I have always thought that this showed a preview of what would be later tried in Bedfordshire Maltese. Regency lace certainly has an ungainly appearance like this lace, so perhaps Adele is correct that it is a variation on Regency. If anyone wants to see an example of Regency, the Metropolitan Museum of Artâs piece, 26.281.1 (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/222059) is a good example. It has a mildly wavy edge like the piece I am now examining. Janeâs suggestion is also interesting. I have seen machine made pieces that were made without gimp and that the lace runners then had to put gimp into with a needle. The Metâs piece, 13.163.3a https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/219579 is an example of that. In that case the design doesnât make any sense without the needle added gimp, which is not the case with this piece. And yet, the mesh of the piece in question is very regular and somewhat elongated, which is not the case with 13.163.3a, but which I sometimes think I see in machine made pieces. And there are some transitions that look odd to me. But the mesh on the Regency lace 26.181.1 is also elongated, if less regular. The piece in question has braided areas and I am not sure that this could have been done by the machine. Much to think about. Many thanks for the thought provoking suggestions. Devon PS. Re: [lace] point ground with no gimp
Devon - I am without my lace books at the moment, so I can’t give you any citations. But there is a type of lace that was done in the early 19th century, that is a point ground with no gimp on the outside of the motifs. In the books I have, it was called “Regency Lace” - probably a reference to the English regency in the 1810s. I do not know if it is Lille or Arras or if it is a Bucks Point variation. The examples I’ve seen have no gimp around the motifs but if there are little holes inside the motif, they will put gimp around them. I can see your piece has no gimp at all; I would suggest it is just a variation of Regency lace. As ever, just my 2 cents. The information also says early 19th century. Is this some experimental lace? Or is there a genre of point ground without a gimp that I am simply not recalling? Help! [lace] point ground with no gimp
Thanks to all who responded with helpful hints regarding my request for access to the museum of Halas lace, and also Arlene Scaroni. On another note. I have encountered a lace in the Met collection which is a point ground without any gimp. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/214651 Please note, the picture enlarges. Re: [lace] Arlene Scaroni, and Hungarian contact
Hi Devon, I have no contact information but wanted to let you know I’m excited about a lecture by Arlene about her work on replicating the Spiro Mound lace. I guess you could call it “lace archeology “. I saw Facebook posts about it over a year ago and would love to know more. [lace] Arlene Scaroni, and Hungarian contact
Dear Arachnids, As perhaps some of you know, I am the âcreative directorâ of the Lace Lectures series which is presented by the International Organization of Lace. I am trying to contact Arlene Scaroni in reference to a presentation on the Spiro Mound lace. I am also trying to contact the Halas Lace Museum, known as Halasi Csipke for a presentation. Does anyone have any information about the museum that would help me to contact them? I have tried sending an email to their email address. Also, I have filled out their contact form, although a previous inquiry to that form, about a book, was not responded to. The museum has been newly renovated and they have a new book about Halas lace. I thought it would be fun to hear from them about the lace and these other enterprises. Please let me know if you have any info. Devon Sent from Mail for Windows - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachnelace.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Needlelace Gnome Ornament
There are two photos now on the Arachne Flickr as requested. One, a closeup of the gnome ornament and the other has some bobbin lace snowflakes from Jana Novak's New Christmas Lace 3 book surrounded by more gnomes.  The hat is about one and a half inches tall to give you an idea of size.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachnelace.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace Advent Calendar
Thanks to Jean for another a great lace advent calendar. I gave up trying to figure them out as there were so many point ground laces that I was sure I got some wrong. I missed doing the ornament exchange last Christmas. I have been doing the exchange ever since it began and loved trying to come up with a new idea for an ornament.  This year, as in many past years, I have given a hand made lace ornament to my yarn group. We make blankets, hats, etc., for seven local charities and I have given them lace for at least the last five years. This time I made a needlelace gnome head similar to those we see all over the States. It was a simple tall red triangle of corded Brussels stitch, all done in DMC 8, outlined with a thick cordonette, then I added a white yarn beard and a pink bead for the nose. I wrote out the instructions and took photos as I did it and the local Silvergate lace guild had a lesson in November making them.We had two finished gnomes before I had to head home. I must have made at least 22 of the gnomes as I sold 7 of them at our fund raising craft fair. Those members that purchased a gnome got a bobbin lace snowflake instead. They were cute and popular and easy to make in front of the telly. Did you do anything special in lace for Christmas 2022?Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachnelace.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Here we go!
This list has already become a MUST to me. I would feel like an orphan if I could not read all your emails! Sometimes so really interesting, others a nice entertainment, others just to be informed about what other lacemaker colleagues are doing... I am really grateful to Arachne (for almost 20 years now!) and so happy to be part of this "family". So... thank you very much Liz for making all these necessary technological changes for all of us!! Happy new year to all!!! Antje, from Spain. [lace-chat] removing lace-chat
As we have been discussing, along with the move to the arachnelace.com domain, we don’t really need the lace-chat list anymore. the lace-chat archive files have been copied to the lace archive, and may be retrieved from there, just send an index command and you’ll see them. I am going to have this list deleted, you don’t need to unsubscribe. if there is anyone on this list not on the main lace list - non-lace chat will now be welcome there so go ahead and subscribe. If it ever gets to be too much, we can always re-create lace-chat. Hello All! Now that the dust has cleared & the holiday hoopla is nearly over, did anyone else miss our Annual Arachne Holiday Ornament Exchange? When I searched the archives, I couldn’t find any posts for this year! The last time I corresponded with our “exchange coordinator”, she was working thru major health & housing issues in the summer. There’s been no correspondence since then. Is this a good time to discuss what Arachne members want to do going forward? And if we decide to continue our exchanges, to seek a volunteer if our former coordinator is no longer willing/able? Any thoughts? Re: [lace] Re: lace-digest V2022 #39
I have to admit I don't actually know. They are working through godaddy. I can only say arachne.com isn't a name that lends itself to ilk. I've had occasional inquiries over the years but have had no trouble declining. Whoever it is seems very interested and came back several times to raise the offer until I stopped saying no. I'm curious to see what will be done with it. -Liz On Thu, Dec 08, 2022 at 08:16:53PM -0600, Chris Vail wrote: > Hi Liz! > > as one of the constant lurkers, I've been very grateful that this list > still exists -- even if it's not getting half the traffic it used to. Re: [lace] domain name change
It looks unanimous, we don't need lace-chat any longer. I will just stop it. I will have to figure out how to make the archive available when the list is closed, but I'm sure it is a solveable problem. panix will move the domain over soon. I hope there will be some overlap and you will all get some warning, but just in case it doesn't work out that way, the new list mailing address will be l...@arachnelace.com majord...@arachnelace.com etc. The purchaser has agreed to forward the mailing list addresses for a few weeks, to give a little time to catch anyone who missed the memo.x -Liz On Mon, Dec 05, 2022 at 08:47:36AM -0500, Elizabeth Reynolds wrote: > Greetings to all of you! > > I???m dropping by to let you know that I???ve accepted an offer for the > arachne.com domain. Re: [lace-chat] domain name change
Well, I still enjoy what chat is still on it! I have been a member since it’s inception! I would be sorry to see it disappear! Well, especially lace! The whole idea of the chat is to keep off topic chatter off the lace list! Well, if occasional chatter would be ok on lace, then and only then would I ok closing lace chat down…just my 5 cents worth Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 5, 2022, at 7:48 AM, Elizabeth Reynolds wrote: > > Greetings to all of you! > > I’m dropping by to let you know that I’ve accepted an offer for the > arachne.com domain. I just now discovered that I never changed Lace Chat from my g-mail address to my real address. That strongly suggests that it's been *years* since there was any traffic on this list. It's pretty much unanimous that we don't need Chat any more, so it doesn't matter that I've forgotten how to change my address. -- Joy Beeson http://wlweather.net/PAGEJOY/ west of Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. where the temperature is well above freezing. Re: Re[2]: [lace] domain name change
I agree with Sue about only needing one listserve group. I used to love having only one place to go for all things 'lace' and miss the old days. Sue's right about the old days needing a separate lace-chat group. We were a large group and the real lace content needed to be separated from the non-lace chatter. This is not the case anymore. Re: [lace] Lorelei Halley
Thanks, Nancy--I'm now capturing what I can from the Internet Archive. So far, I haven't found any pages or other content missing, but I have a ways to go. Her main page there also gave me the name of her (previous) hosting company, and I've reached out to them to see whether they can give us access to her content. Deborah--you are correct that GoDaddy is the domain registrar now, but her site is no longer hosted at that domain, obviously. I will keep trying to find contact information for her family. I found her Pinterest in my browser history: https://www.pinterest.com/lynxlacelady/ Lots of pages there, as well. Possibly GoDaddy bought the name on spec, or perhaps her family used GoDaddy to reregister the domain quickly. It doesn't put us any closer to finding her next of kin for accessing her data for preservation. fyi, the internet archive does not crawl every page, so those files may be incomplete. The “Lorelei Lynxlady” on Pinterest did not produce anything that looked like lace related materials. Re: [lace] Lorelei Halley
Hi, Nancy! I am in the process of re-establishing the pages and forums that Lorelei originally hosted at Ning. Before the Ning site went down (conscious decision by Lorelei due to increased hosting fees at Ning), I captured as much content as I was able to, from both the LaceIOLI site and the NeedleLaceTalk site. Shortly after I started the process of putting that content up on a new host at laceioli.org, I was deployed for a year with the Guard. I had hoped to be able to continue the process during my deployment but was hampered by often slow to nonexistent Internet service. I am home from my deployment and resuming the process of loading content to the new site. Due to the way Ning was set up, I am having to do everything manually, so it will be a slow process. I haven't tried Lorelei's lynxlady.com site since my return, but my understanding is that her brother was going to keep the site up for the foreseeable future. As for laceioli.org, if you have any issues signing up or posting, please contact me privately and I will do my best to help you. Sarah On 17 Nov 2022 12:01, N.A. Neff wrote: Fellow Arachnids: It was with some distress that I learned at Convention of the deaths of several lacemakers, including Lorelei Halley in April. I had forgotten, if I knew, that LaceIOLI had moved off ning to www.laceioli.org. I don't think I ever got to laceioli.org to sign up, so I'm really out of the loop. But the passing of Lorelei is a tremendous loss to the lace community -- she contributed so much and helped so many. The end of her obituary says she desired her webpages, www.lynxlady.com, to be maintained, but I'm getting a "site can't be reached" error message when I try it, or when I try laceioli.org. So my question for you all is: is anyone working to restore those sites that Lorelei put so much work into? and a related question -- why was ning abandoned and was all that info moved over? I'm asking because I'd like to see the info recovered and made available again, but before I bother Lorelei's sister or do anything further, I want to know if someone else is doing something already. Is someone?? TIA. Nancy Connecticut, USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Spangled and Bobbins!
Hi Friends, Still asking myself questions as to when spangling began! I decided that the OED might have the answers. Well no, there does not seem to have any special reference to spangling (and all the other words) a bobbin. It does refer to decorating an object. I also looked up Gingle, Jingle and any other words that came to mind related to decorating a bobbin, but nothing turned up. I need to say that my interest in the OED was sparked by reading the book that has a title similar to The Dictionary of Lost Words, Pip Williams. Its a great book and entertaining, but its key message is that "women's words" were not collected. Not that they would not collect them but the process of adding a word was (briefly and in general) a person would write to the authors with an example of the word , the date and the context of its use. It would then be put on a piece of paper and filed when they got to that letter. It was included after learned discussion. The whole point of this is that it was basically a male group of editors and men were mostly the ones who sent in word examples and who made the decisions to include the word. My best guess at the moment is that spangling bobbins started after 1750 and probably quite closer to 1800. No proofs offered, just that feeling I have having been writing about bobbins for a lot of years. -- Brian Cooranbong Australia. Loreleiâs family have been very generous in transferring ownership of a great amount of lace items to the IOLI. The IOLI has assumed responsibility for the Ning site and transferred it to the LaceIOLI.org site. Unfortunately, the person who was working on the site had to move and has not recently been able to work on it. [lace] Lorelei Halley
Fellow Arachnids: It was with some distress that I learned at Convention of the deaths of several lacemakers, including Lorelei Halley in April. Re: [lace] "Four Great Lace Collections" & Threads of Power exhibit
Thanks, Nancy & Anne. That’s what I thought, plus that the early machines spun cotton and wool, is that correct? And yes, I am not close to my library either, but Pat Earnshaw’s thread book is subtitled ‘From Source to Sink’ if I remember correctly? I also had understood that early flax produced finer fibers which were lost. I have recently acquired some old and very fine flax stricks from Christiane Seufferlein, an Austrian who was gifted stricks from the descendants of a woman called ‘Berta’. Word got around plus an article was published in a UK journal for spinners and weavers resulting in many other families gifting Christiane with old flax stricks from doweries of ancestors. She has created a Facebook group called ‘Berta’s Flax’ named after this first flax gift, and is sharing all this flax with spinners all over the world for just the cost of postage. The flax I received is much finer than any I have seen before and I am anxious to see how fine a thread I can spin and hopefully use to make lace. Discussion in the group seems to suggest that the potential fineness may also depend upon the point at which the plant is harvested, as well as the subsequent steps (retting, breaking, scutching, etc.) Vicki in Maryland Sent from my iPhone - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] "Four Great Lace Collections" & Threads of Power exhibit
Yes most definitely the thread for lace was hand spun. The early needle laces were made using hand spun linens which have long fibres. Re: [lace] "Four Great Lace Collections" & Threads of Power exhibit
Hi Vicki et al., The very fine thread in the late 17th and early 18th C was all handspun linen, made from flax from cultivars that produced very fine and long fibers. These cultivars were completely destroyed during the French revolution, so very fine thread could not be produced again until fine cotton thread from better spinning technology and the import of long-staple cotton. I don't have a reference for these assertions right now (I'm sitting in the Archaeology Museum in Heraklion, Crete, so rather far from my library :-D), but I think the info is in Pat Earnshaw's book (do I remember correctly that there's one specifically on thread?) Hi Devon & all, I’m not sure if this will make it to the list because I’m one of those hangers-on still using AOL, but on a somewhat off-topic point, I was taken by Devon’s comments about how fine some lace threads were. While visiting the V some years ago, the same thoughts occurred to me. As a spinner as well as a lacemaker, it also struck me that as fine as the threads were, they were also most likely at least two-ply, thus making the observation even more amazing. As far as I can find, the first machine spinning originated with the invention of the Spinning Jenny in around 1765, but some information suggests that the thread produced from these machines was coarse and not strong. RE: [lace] "Four Great Lace Collections" & Threads of Power exhibit
Dear Nancy, Arlene and fellow Arachnids, I was also puzzled by the claim that there are four great lace collections and wondered what they were. I had it in mind to contact the Wall Street Journal writer and ask her to tell me. However, I imagine this was information contained in a press packet from the museum, so it might be better asked of the curators, or possibly the Textilmuseum in St. Gallen. (I did feel that it might be a little bit embarrassing, me being a big time lace aficionado, having to ask a reporter for the Wall Street Journal what the four big lace collections were.) But, I havenât had the time to ask about this because the Threads of Power exhibit at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery in New York is keeping me really busy. This is a great exhibit, including 151 pieces from the Textilmuseum in St. Gallen, Switzerland. I encourage everyone to try to see it. It is strong on 17th century lace and has pieces of astoundingly fine thread that allows for a great deal of definition to tiny figures of animals, mermen, etc. I have never seen such fine thread and it has really made me think. This is certainly the best and biggest lace exhibit to happen in New York since the Cooper-Hewitt show in 1982. The first floor is devoted to 17th century lace which is a transformative experience. But, it also includes a wonderful piece by Elena Kanagy-Loux. She was inspired by the fact that there are two very similar needle lace depictions of the story of Judith and Holofernes, one in the show, and one in the Metropolitan Museum collection. She was asked to make a piece of lace and keep track of the hours. She chose to do a very imaginative collar depicting Judith and Holofernes in the scallops. (Recall that she made an original collar for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to be a gift from Columbia University.) It took over 200 hours to make the collar for the Bard. She filmed the process and there is a speeded up video of her working it. This is actually the first thing that visitors see when they enter the exhibit. On the second floor there is more 17th century lace, be still my beating heart, under the concept of focusing on the Habsburgâs lace. Included is a table cover with representations of the Golden Fleece that Is identical to the one in the V & A. I say this without fear of contradiction because I actually looked up the one at the V & A to check its measurements and they are the same. In fact, the information on the piece on the V & Aâs website is that there is an identical one in St. Gallen. The one at the V & A entered the collection in 1880 and the one at the Bard was bought at auction in 2006. What is the story behind this? What auction? Were there two or more originally? Is one a copy? Also on the second floor is an area on the French lace industry of the 17th and 18th century with some breath- taking lappets, again in incredibly fine thread. There is an area on ecclesiastical lace which includes the most prized possession of the Textilmuseum, a needle lace piece, possibly an antependium, dating from the late 17th century with tiny figures in 17th century dress incorporating gold thread. The third floor deals with the Ikle familyâs use of the collection to assist them in making authentic looking lace on the Schiffli machine. Also on the third floor is contemporary fashion made of machine made lace including Michelle Obamaâs dress that she wore to the 2009 inauguration. This was an extremely important loan to the Bard, although, for my part, I find my interest flagging when we get to machine made lace. In fact, a number of people have told me that they cannot take in the entire exhibit in one visit, and since they are lace people, I think they are talking about the first and second floor. Personally, I was so exhausted by the first floor that I had to traverse the second floor by moving a Bard provided folding museum stool along with me. I still feel I have not really absorbed it all. The exhibit includes oil paintings of people wearing the lace, an original pattern book, a print of a 17th century lace shop and all sorts of didactic material which I would find most interesting if it were not for the fact that I have only enough energy to focus on the lace itself. There are videos showing how lace is made. The scholarly work on putting on the exhibit is very impressive. There is also a catalog that is over 400 pages long with articles by lace scholars that we know and others that we do not know. There is an attempt to include lace made and worn by non-Europeans. In the exhibit there is an emphasis on the lacemakers themselves. The Bard held a class about the lacemakers and the members of the class researched them and produced digital material that enhances the exhibit. There are kiosks with a screen that allows you to interact with the material. Also there are black holes with glass surfaces in various places in the museum which allow you to down load an audio file with mor

[lace] "Four Great Lace Collections in the World"
Hello, all - I was very fortunate to see in person the Threads of Power exhibit at the Bard Graduate Center a few weeks back at the wonderful lace day. If you are anywhere near NYC between now and Jan 1, run don't walk to see it! The book/catalog is PHENOMENAL and I keep returning to it in little spurts, as there is so much information and so many stunning pictures. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the NY Times has done a review? (which is a shame) I did see that the WSJ did one: https://www.wsj.com/articles/threads-of-power-lace-from-the-textilmuseum-st-g allen-bard-graduate-center-review-paul-scott-emma-cormack-ilona-kos-machele-m ajer-isabel-toledo-michelle-obama-forster-rohner-jakob-schlaepfer-11666214213 In this review, it says "Today, there are four great lace collections in the world and the Textilmuseum's is one of them." My question is:  what are the other three? I suppose it might be a subjective opinion (?), but that sentence in the article has been mulling over in my head. RE: [lace] Lacemaker Assistance in Massachusetts, USA
Hi all, Sorry for responding so late. Several of you were awesome and provided me information on the New England Lace Group. I have already passed the information on to my friend. I also found some youtube videos for left-handed tatting that I sent her. One person also reminded me about I.O.L.I, which I had forgotten about. I looked at the site and was very impressed by the information on the site. I enjoyed listening to the radio broadcast about Ipswich. [lace] Bolster Pillow Bobbin Management
Thank you Janice for describing yet another management idea! I did finish my sample swatch & posted it to Flickr Photostream. Sadly, my enthusiasm for using my bolster for this project is waning so I think my next step will be to test this pattern on a roller pillow to see if that helps. Frankly, it’s too big a project & it won’t be any fun if I’m struggling with threads & equipment. I did work “groups” of bobbins & set up a line of divider pins along the edge, an arrangement that sounds similar to your pearl lineup. It worked, but was very slow going. Maybe I’m expecting too much? Maybe I can’t successfully manage more than 5 pairs (Idrija narrow tape)? A roller pillow comparison test should help me find out whether this is a three month or a three year project! In the meantime, I’m sorry about all the knots. Between my mistakes & trying to use up odds & ends of perle 5, stuff happened. I made the swatch as a mat so it might be useable for something. Re: [lace] lace] Bolster pillow Bobbin management
Oh I can picture it ! Would work well IF I didn’t have curious cats but I do!! My ribbon with beaded pins and divider pins is literally the reverse and locks the bobbins down! A combination of the two would possibly work for me… Sent from my iPhone > On Oct 15, 2022, at 11:58 AM, Janice Blair wrote: > > Susan,I have not used a bolster pillow but many of my friends do. Susan,I have not used a bolster pillow but many of my friends do. What they made was a strip of ribbon with large pearl beads sewn on, or a crochet strip, similar to what some use to hold bobbins when packing up the pillow, but at regular close intervals they attached a large round bead. The strips go around the outer edges of the bolster and as you work through the bobbins, the used ones are placed behind the beads out of the way. It is easy to lift them back up when you need them again. Wish I had a photo to show you, hard to explain in words. Looks pretty on the pillow. I have also seen wire that is coiled, similar to the old telephone cords we used to have on the kitchen wall phone, and fastened around the sides of the bolster and you place the thread leads over a coil. [lace] Bolster Pillow Bobbins
Update—I’m now using a mix of ribbon (thx Angel) & crocheted holders (thx DN). Just tied them on. Better organized, reduced threat of tipping over & no danger of stabbing myself. It’s still pretty fiddly (for me) but an improvement. Less gnashing of teeth that’s for sure!
