RE: [LegacyUG] Shifting Sources
Jenny, Online sources change format quite often, therefore, I do not update all of my old citations. The reason for this is that by doing so, I would be spending all of my available time updating old source citations instead of researching my ancestors. However, I would set up a new Master Source that reflects the new format for future entries. This may not be the way Elizabeth Shown Mills would do it, however, it is the way I am most comfortable with. Charles -Original Message- From: Jenny M Benson [mailto:ge...@cedarbank.me.uk] Sent: Monday, September 15, 2014 12:30 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Shifting Sources Well, it's not actually the Sources which have shifted, but the names of Collections change and/or Search methods change and I'm wondering how other LUGgers handle this. Here's an example which illustrates exactly what I mean. In the Good Old Days when searching FindMyPast for a marriage in the English county of Cheshire one could select Parish Records from a a menu, then select the tab for Marriages and then enter the search parameters. I set up a SourceWriter Source (using the template for Church Record Books created at local level, online images) called Parish Registers - FMP. I put the website details into the Master Source and entered Parish Records Collection in the Collection field. The name of the specific Church and its location and whether the record is from PRs or BTs and whether a Baptism, Marriage or Burial, I included in the Source Detail. Now the FindMyPast site has been completely re-vamped and the easiest and quickest way to find a marriage in Cheshire is to use the All Records list to select either Diocese of Chester Parish Registers of Marriages or Diocese of Chester Bishhop's Transcripts of Marriages. There is no longer a facility to search Parish Records generally. So, the question is this: would you continue to use the Parish Registers - FMP template and have any following-on researcher muddle through to find the same record which I did, or would you set up a new Master Source for the specific Collection (and corresponding new Sources for the Baptism and Burials Collections, PRs and BTs in each case and for each County)? And supposing you create a new set of Master Sources, would you update all your old citations to the new Sources or leave them as they are? I think I know what Elizabeth Shown Mills would say, but I am not asking what is RIGHT, but what do most people actually do?! -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). [LegacyUG] Independent City location entries
As most of you are aware some states, especially Virginia, have Independent Cities as opposed to being located in a particular county. Previously, I have been leaving out the Independent City criteria when recording locations. Since I am cleaning up my Master Location list, I was wondering how many people on this list actually enter the Independent City information in locations fields. For example, Richmond, Virginia could be entered as Richmond, Independent City, Virginia, United States or it could be entered as Richmond, , Virginia, United States. The Geo Location Database in Legacy 8 has Richmond, Richmond (city), Virginia, United States. Although I realize that this is most likely personal preference, I would really like to know how others using Legacy 8 enter Independent Cities. Caveat: It is not my intent to start a discussion on the pros and cons of the three comma criteria. I am very well aware that the three comma criteria in locations does not fit all countries in the world. Besides this has been previously discussed and is probably in the Legacy Archives. I need to combine four different family files into one family file representing the lines for both husband and wife. [LegacyUG] Problem with Family Group Report
The event sentence in the Family Group Report is displaying the wrong person. I ran Check/Repair, checked the event sentence definition, restarted Legacy 8 (latest release), to no avail. The problem persists, and nothing seems to correct it. First problem: My Citizenship event definition reads as follows [FirstHeShe] was automatically granted [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Notes] [Sources] which should read as John was automatically granted United States Citizenship at the moment of his birth on 9 May 1949 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Instead of displaying this way, the [FirstHeShe] placeholder picks up his mother's name, instead of his. Second problem: While checking the event sentence definitions I also noticed that all of the [sources] and [notes] were missing from the event sentence definitions even though the sources and notes displayed correctly in the Report. Is there a setting that I have missed? Alternatively, if you move the mouse pointer either to the left or right of the rectangular box on which the individual appears, and then move the mouse pointer back and hover over the individual the popup will appear without going to someone else or left clicking. RE: [LegacyUG] Timeline locations
Bob, See if this works, select the Chronology Tab Options from the menu select Display Options under Other Options (bottom right corner) click the button labeled Select Remove any selected timelines showing in the Currently Selected Timelines window click the button labeled Add A Timeline File. This should allow you to choose the timelines from the Legacy 8 installed Timelines. However, you would be well advised to follow Jenny Benson's comments and reinstall Legacy 8 to its default location. From my own personal experience, I know that the above step will select the correct Timeline files when installed to the default locations, however, I don't know how it will work when Legacy 8 is installed to a location other than the default. Not a major problem until I eventually delete the version 7 folders. How to I tell version 8 to look in the version 8 timeline folder? The laptop (that never had version 7) can not find the timelines in my family file because I did not copy the version 7 folders over to the laptop. I'm guessing I can copy my unique version 7 timeline files from my desktop to my version 8 timeline folder on my laptop (and to the version 8 folder on my desktop). But my family database is looking for them under the version 7 folder. How do I change this? The Help file says timelines are located at: [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Timeslines\[Language]. But this is not the case for me. Ah - I just found them under: C:\winprog\Legacy8\_AppData\Timelines But I still don't see a way to tell the program where to look. Since the file structures are different, one would need to main dual data entry if one was to keep both databases current. And, for most of us, that’s unnecessary and a waste of time. If one is not going to keep the database current, there is simply no reason to keep the program around. Just my two cents. RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Partnerships/Marriages
It is my understanding that the purpose of genealogy is to reconstruct the lives of our ancestors as best as possible, and not how we would have preferred it to have been. If I was to include those, I'd potentially look like a crazy cat lady to anyone who looked at my tree in future. I do however have an albeit small number of people in my tree who have been in a same sex relationship for at least twice as long as a number of marriages. If I am going to record a 3 year marriage, or a 5 year de-facto not-married-but-had-kids relationship, I should at least honour the 10+ year committed same sex relationship in the same way. I am not going to deny the child one of their parents just because their parents didn't marry, so why should I deny someone their life partner because the law denies them the same rights to marriage as everyone else? If Legacy brings in the ability for same-sex relationships to be recorded - it's going to be an optional thing, just the same as using the Research Guidance, or the Surety Levels, or adding images and sources are optional. Kathy, I am not very familiar with reading parish records, however, from the transcripts provided below it appears to me that they were “. . . Proclaimed” husband and wife in 1766 August 31. This appears to be the actual marriage ceremony. Robert Marshall and Elizabeth Lawson were “booked in Order of Marriage” on 1766 September 10; this appears to be a parish administrative issue where their marriage was officially sanctioned and recorded into the records of Gask parish. [LegacyUG] Event Sentence Structure Recommendations
I would like to develop and event sentence specifically for wives and their children whose husband and/or father is a career military service member. The wife and children accompanied their husband and or father to each of his military reassignments in different locations, many were overseas and others were within the continental United States. Obviously, the wife and children are not subject to the Military Orders received by the husband, therefore, that would eliminate sentence structures specifically dealing with military transfers. I have struggled with this for a while, but for some reason, am drawing a blank. Any recommendations from the Legacy User Group will be appreciated. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy updates - FSFT does not connect to Legacy when combining the person i question
Helle, I had a similar or possibly the same problem. After downloading information from FSFT into Legacy, the data did not appear in Legacy. However, I changed focus by switching to either the spouse or one of the children and then returned focus (Family View) back to the person I was working on, and all the information appeared. So, try downloading one piece of information. Go back to Legacy and change focus in Family View and then back to the original person. Check to see if the information, that you download from FSFT, has appeared. Charles From: Helle T. Working on a family some family members connect really well with FSFT and all data is carrying over well. Others I get to go to FSFT - combine a number of persons in a relationship: parents and children. Somehow it seems that the persons on FSFT are disconnected and do not carry over to Legacy. If I write down names and data of a possible spouse I sometimes can get the marriage relationship to work and sometimes get the children too. But I have to enter them into my Legacy file and then connect again. I do not know if this has been discussed before, but I have not noticed any subjects pointing that way. RE: [LegacyUG] 'de' in a family name
Alan, Although not technically correct, I combine the prefix with the surname in order to prevent two surnames. De and Le are French-Norman prefixes meaning “of the,” therefore, and especially in the case of “De” these prefix’s sometimes denoted people that were landed wealthy aristocrats. Many such prefixes have been combined over the years, i.e., Devoe, Devane, etc. The prefix “Fitz” is also French-Norman originating from a Latin prefix, which means “son of.” A common surname that has been combined in FitzGerald. And there are many, many others . . . . My suggestion is to do what is understandable and comfortable to you. It is your data. My problem is when at some stage in medieval times, ‘de’ attached to a surname denoting place of origin of the family, is no longer used. For instance, I have numerous ‘de HATFIELD’ and ‘HATFIELD’ of the same family which appear under D and H in the name list, and which is confusing. I am thinking of changing ‘de HATFIELD’ to ‘HATFIELD, de’ so that they all appear under the letter H. Any views? RE: [LegacyUG] Events - repeated or is once enough?
My ancestors came from a small village in Germany where there was only One Church. Prior to 1535 everyone in the village was Catholic since the only Church was Catholic. However, following the death of the Priest, the Lutheran Preachers took over the church. So if anyone in the village wanted to attend church, they had to follow Lutheran doctrine and teachings. After migrating to America, many converted to other religions. My point in all this, is that some people had no choice as to which religion they belonged to, and as a result converted to other religions out of necessity. So this should be kept in mind. One word of caution in terms of having a single Religion event and assuming the person was that religion throughout their lives. Although it is rare to have a Catholic to change to a Protestant based religion (including Church of England) it was not unheard of. The same goes for a Protestant changing to become a Catholic, although in that case there will be some interesting documents concerning the renouncing of heresy (especially pre-Vatican II days). Additionally, at least in parts of Ontario and the Maritime provinces of Canada, Protestants could switch religions depending on what schism had occurred or if there was a closer church when they moved. For what it's worth, referring to genealogical standard's it matters not what I think. For accuracy, all genealogists should record information as it was, or is, in reality and *not* what we wish it to be. Therefore, we enter information into Legacy Family Tree accordingly, even it that involves workarounds. RE: [LegacyUG] Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy file
Bill, I pretty much follow the same advice as given previously by Michelle. Personally I would import the GEDCOM into a *separate* family file created specifically for that particular GEDCOM or Family Line, but definitely *NOT* into my main Family File. This just makes it easier to work with and compare to your Family File, IMHO. In addition to contacting the author for additional source information, as Michelle suggested, I would only use the information in that GEDCOM or new family file as *LEADS* for further research and proper sourcing. Geoff R.s statement is worth repeating, Genealogy without documentation is Mythology. As a side note, some members of the Legacy User Group will not respond to a message sent in HTML, so please make sure that all your messages are formatted in Plain Text. Hope this helps, Charles From: William (Bill) R. I am very strong technically, so I don't need all the details, more of a vision would be helpful. I am good at technical details. Right now I need help to see the forest. I have a small Legacy family file of about 100+ people. I have found a useful tree (via Legacy research tips :-) ) with another 100+ family members. I downloaded a GEDCOM and created a temp-Legacy file to review the content. There are no sources in the GEDCOM but it looks like some good leads. I found it on Rootweb (last updated about 2004). The authors email address may or may not be good as it is from 2004. I suspect the person is part of this tree and the tree is based on family legends and personal conversations. About 20 % of the new family members are in my current file with high degree of confidence. Before I shoot myself in the foot I would like to ask this community for an approach to using a tree of unknown quality when you find one. This is the first time I have ever found tree I value. It links, without any doubt, to my tree to some extent or to a large extent. The 20% is a perfect fit. It is the 80% I don't know how to approach. What are the risks? What mistakes should I avoid that you all know about from lessons learned? If I can avoid doing something really stupid, I would like to avoid doing it. How would you approach this beast? (1) MERGE with my Legacy file and sort out details later? (2) MANUALLY add these 100 entries one at a time and research each? (3) LIMITED-MERGE keep only blood lines and cast off the rest? (4) Should I try to contact the author? What would I request? I am new to genealogy so I don't know the etiquette that is common between researchers. (5) ... I could go on with questions but I bet you guys have faced this hundreds of times ... this is my first time. Maybe there is some guidance in a book or in a class or in a CD from Legacy? I don't know what I don't know. Or maybe Geoff R. can create a new Webinar on Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy file? ... if he has not done that one yet. My goal is to document and share my own family tree as professionally as I can. I know I have a lot to learn. Your suggestions for guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have reviewed training Volume 1 and am working through training volume 2. I have found these to be very good resources for learning the tool features and functions. I have been monitoring Legacy webinars. If this belongs on different board, please let me know where. Thanks, in advance, for your consideration. RE: [LegacyUG] Research Notes
Kathy, You mentioned a Research Log in your email below. I use Legacy's Research Notes as a Research Log noting everything in chronological order from birth to burial and anything in between. I use Legacy's ToDo List to make notes of additional items that I need to do further research on the individual in question. I agree with Ron, as with so many features in Legacy there is no right or wrong way, just individual preferences. Hope this helps. Ron, I think maybe you have hit on the answer I need. I haven't used 'to dos' much; played a bit to see how it worked but that's it. I felt like I had to really embrace that function if I was going to use it effectively, otherwise, I would probably enter a few things and forget to go back and look. I'm still very much attached to my paper and pencil, making notes about what films I want to look at etc. I was thinking Research Notes because a lot of people used to use a 'research log' to record what they were searching (film), what they were looking for and what the results were. So I was thinking that Research Notes would take over that function; and I guess it could, easily. But MAYBE it would be better, even after the fact, to go into the ToDo List and create a ToDo item for each film I looked at, it's source description, and my results from that. I am looking for a way to record everything I've researched on a particular person in one place so I could look at it and see what records I have already viewed and their results. Would using the ToDo list in the way I mentioned accomplish that? Thanks! RE: [LegacyUG] Surname pronunciation
Richard, Names evolve considerably over generations, depending on dialects, countries of origin, countries of destination, languages used, and many other factors. I don't believe there is one easy answer, although, there may be many opinion's on why it should be done a particular way. Personally, I prefer a method similar to transcription i.e. record information as found in the records. In other words, how did the people who had those surnames pronounce them at that time in history, and what is the particular country and language of origin in which they spoke. The two examples that you cite Noel and Barron linguistically and etymologically originated in the Old French language, and being familiar with French both surnames have a definite Nasal quality or tone to them. However, having said that, both surnames could possibly be traced back prior to the Norman conquest of 1066, and on into Latin variants. For example, my surname is Apple and the surname originated in Germany. Even between dialects in Germany, I have found approximately 40 different variant spellings and pronunciations among the German people. When my ancestors came to the United Sates, their surname was recorded Phonetically so again, in the English language there are approximately 35 variant spellings and pronunciations. I don't believe there is one single best answer to your question, nor do I believe there is a dictionary or lexicon that can provide an adequate answer. Perhaps, in a particular time, place, language, and country, however, beyond that the surname evolves into different spellings and pronunciations. As previously stated, I prefer to record the name as it was spelled and pronounced at the time, language, and country in which it was used. RE: [LegacyUG] deleted entire file
Lyn, How long has it been since you deleted the file? And was the location of the file on your hard drive, as opposed to a memory stick? Without going into a lot details, your file may not have been deleted. Instead, a pointer was changed rendering that file invisible to the operating system. However, the longer you wait from the time of the files deletion, the greater the chances of it being overwritten by other data or files. There are several free hard drive utilities on the internet that will allow you to recover lost files. Just use your search engine to find one. As previously mentioned by Jerry, the recycle bin is actually a failsafe from which a file can be recovered. Simply right click on it and you should be presented with a menu, however, failing that simply double click on the recycle bin. When I switched from another genealogy program to Legacy and became of member of this LUG, I also felt as you did, however, after of couple of days of countering those responses, I soon began to realize that the more knowledgeable members were either being succinct in their answers, or trying to point me in the direction where I could find an answer and thus it became a learning experience for my benefit, without any intended negative meaning. The negative answers were a result of my perception, and not those intended by the writers. The bottom line is, please don't write off Legacy as genealogy program or the more knowledgeable members of this LUG, who are more than willing to assist others, simply because of a perceived you should have known that attitude. From experience, I can assure you that is not the case! An extract from the message below states . . .which is the actual meaning of the Greek word baptizo - to immerse May I suggest that you verify your Greek interpretation from Koine Greek sources rather than Classical Greek. There are actually Two (2) different Greek words, which can be verified by a 900 BC document in which both words are used each meaning two different things, however, both represent two individual steps in one continuous process. No Theological agenda, of any kind, is attached to either word in the 900 BC document. The same Koine Greek language was later used in the Septuagint Translation. Most of the evangelical Christian churches do not use the term christening because they believe the Bible only teaches adult baptism and normally by immersion, which is the actual meaning of the Greek word baptizo - to immerse. Not wanting to introduce any controversy on that - everyone has to be persuaded in their own minds and according to their own beliefs, but that is perhaps why it is better to use the term baptism, rather than christening, as it covers it for both belief systems. Robert, this could also indicate a Red Flag. Before deciding check out the graphics card, processor, and memory capacity. If these meet Your requirements for Your specific intended use of the Netbook, then the Windows Starter OS, or base OS as Bob pointed out, should work just fine. Similar situations have occurred in the United States, i.e. Washington County, Tennessee was at an earlier time Washington County, North Carolina. RE: [LegacyUG] Artifact vs Recorded Legal Certificates
Thank you Jenny for your response which certainly helps. My greatest concern was focusing on the Source from which I received the information. One Source being an individual who privately held a Certificate (Which may or may not have been supplied by the local office of origination) even though she definitely was a participant in the event (marriage); and the second Source being the County Clerk of Origination where a record of the event is maintained. Based upon your recommendation, it would appear that the Individual in possession of the Certificate would be regarded as a Repository, and the County Clerk from whom I received a photocopy would be regarded as another Repository. Am I understanding your response correctly? Additionally, there were other birth and marriage certificates for her mother and father (both now deceased) and I have not had the opportunity to verify the information in those certificates with those of the County Clerk or State Vital Statistics Office. I think the situation is a little different here in the UK because the only way you get information from the Authority (which would be General Register Office or the local Register Office where event took place) would be in the form of a Certificate. If I am in possession of an original Certificate (and by original I mean one issued by the GRO or a local RO, rather than a photocopy) then I use the SW template for Certificates, regardless of whether it was me that obtained the Cert from the authority or someone else who gave it to me. If someone else holds the Cert but gives me a photocopy then I still use the same template but record in the Comments that it is a photocopy of an original held by X. In your situation I would do much the same: use the Marriage Records - Found in Governmental Records template, attach a copy of the photocopy you have and record in the Comments that the information actually came from 2 sources. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Artifact vs Recorded Legal Certificates
Hi Marianne, The marriage certificate was of her own marriage, and at this point I can only assume (which I don't like do) that she and her husband received it from the same place they were married. The photocopy that I received from the County Clerk's Office appears to be identical as to her own marriage certificate, however, I would like to record each as separate source. Additionally, there were other birth and marriage certificates for her mother and father (both now deceased) and I have not had the opportunity to verify the information in those certificates with those of the County Clerk or State Vital Statistics Office. The confusing issue for the privately held certificates is that the Legacy SourceWriter Template only allows for Marriage Records, 1) Found in Church Records, or 2) Found in Governmental Records, and 3) Frakturs which does not apply to any of the certificates supplied by the individual, however, it does apply to the photocopy that I received from the County Clerks Office. David, Referencing your question, firstly through an exhaustive research some married couples are known to have had no children and should be documented as such. Secondly and probably more important, making assumptions prior to an exhaustive and documented research can lead one into mythology and pure fantasy. Following an exhaustive research one can make a hypothesis based upon available evidence up to that point, however, newly uncovered evidence can either prove or disprove that hypothesis. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage To Cousins
James, James, I just enter the relationship of both husband and wife, and to which ancestor they are related and how, in the notes section of the standard marriage event. I try to keep it simple to avoid any confusion. In my particular case, there was such a ferocious legal battle that occurred, that none of the descendants ever spoke of it again. After the first and second generations were deceased, none of the descendants had any knowledge of who they were related to or where they came from. It is not so much the fact they were related as cousins, brothers, sisters, etc., however, by having that knowledge, it will focus you in the direction of your research efforts, such as court documents. I only enter the husband and wife's relationship to each other, and not to me. For their relationship to me, I rely on the standard Legacy set relations feature. My reasoning is that I believe that it will add a potential layer of confusion. I have never done a search for those individuals that may be related in a way other than marriage. Perhaps someone on the LUG will respond to your question that is more experienced with this aspect of Legacy than I am. I address each individual as I get to them, and specifically prove a relationship, other than marriage, when it is warranted, or a question exists as to the relationship. In my opinion, there is more than enough to do in documenting and sourcing direct line ancestors without looking for additional work. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage To Cousins
Jerry, I would recommend that you continue making a note of cousin marriages, although some didn't see the point of your question, I definitely do. I suspected that one of my ancestors in particular had married first cousins, and it took me ten (10) long years of research before I was able to prove with empirical evidence that the marriage took place. Many may think that was silly of me and a waste of time, however, the point of proving the marriage was that it connected a line of descendants, from that marriage, to the source ancestor. If it was not for the proof of that marriage, I would still be guessing at the connection, and their ancestors. That single connection allowed me to follow the ancestry back to England from which they immigrated. For those that think this is not important, Sir Admiral Nicholas Haddock, and his father Sir Richard Haddock portraits can both be viewed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. Both served in the British Royal Navy. So by all means please make a note. Those that don't may regret it later. Paula, I am not suggesting this is right for everyone, however, it's just the way that suits me after 20+ years of hard research. Everything I get is filed, whether it is a digital image on hard disk, photograph, hard copy of Birth Certificates, etc., or anything else. All folders have a number, whether in a filing cabinet, computer hard drive, three ring binders, or archival boxes. Each file, document, photograph, digital image, etc. is filed in a numbered folder. An Excel Spreadsheet acts as the Master Index. Locations are things like filing cabinets, computer hard drives, three ring binders, etc. The Excel Spread records the Surname, Given names of the individual, along with the location number, folder number, and document number within that folder, along with a description of what that document is. I also have a column in each record row for Search tags to help in locating a particular document. Using this system, it really makes no difference where a document is filed. I can easily find it by Searching the Master Index in Excel, going to the location and retrieving the document. RE: [LegacyUG] Set preferences for user group
Thank you Wendy. It is much easier for us to learn to control our own messages, than expect others to do it for us. It is getting difficult to manage the large volume of emails. Any way to add it to a wish list? What you - and anyone else - can do, is use your email program/services tools to manage your mail better, to identify the incoming list mail and divert it to its own folder so that it's away from your Inbox. Many email programs/services use rules or filters. They're the same thing, just different names. Take a look at the Help file for whatever you're using for the details. I have some instructions on my personal web site for another list, which work fine for other lists by substituting the appropriate email address - http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter It's been many years since I updated that information, but there's enough there to give you the idea of what's going on if your specific program isn't covered. I see you're using Gmail, werleme, and I can't see that you're using an email client (program) so presume you're using their web service? Gmail on the web has filters, but it doesn't have folders. It uses labels instead. In this situation, it's not so convenient, to my way of thinking, but not impossible. I think I'm showing my age (mid-40's and having used email since the early 90's), in that I like to download my mail to my computer and deal to it there. At Gmail on the web, you can use a filter to label the list mail, then you can choose to read it separately from your other mail. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Jennifer, My Ancestors came from Scotland, Ireland, Germany, England, and France. I have done as Jennie Benson suggests. I had a similar situation with one of my ancestors, and I recorded them as Michele suggested. I also have a similar situation, and I did basically the same as mentioned in the previous thread. Personally, I would record his Given Birth Name as shown on source documents. In my particular case, the ancestor had their Given Names changed legally, therefore, I created an event indicating this change, and included the detail in the Notes Section as necessary. Really, it depends on the situation, if the name was casually changed (on a casual basis), or casually used, then I would most likely record that as an AKA. RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Problem in Chronological View
Richard, the specific dates of the marriage and marriage events all occurred on the same date, therefore, any date can be used as long as it is the same date. As for the categories, I assume that the 'Marriage category comes from the actual data entered into the Marriage Information Screen, for two reasons; 1) because its color is different than the other two events; and 2) there are only two events entered into the marriage events, 1) being when they obtained the 'Marriage License,' and 2) the actual 'Marriage Ceremony' being performed. I hope this is a little clearer. I was somewhat surprised - to put it mildly! - when I tried to open my family file and it wasn't there! I went back to the Dropbox folder containing the Legacy folder and sure enough, nearly all the files relating to my current family file were absent! The folder actually *should* contain the files relating to 5 different savings of my family file, as I have saved it and started with a renamed copy every few months. 3 of the 5 databases are complete, but of the most recent 2 (dated 18 Jan and 07 May this year) only the .NC and .TC files are there. As I was working on the 07 May file on Saturday night, closed it down normally and copied the Legacy folder on Sunday morning there is no reason to suppose the full version is happily residing on my home computer, but I won't half be relieved when I go home and satisfy myself that it is! I'm totally baffled, though, how files could just vanish like that. Although when I upgraded from an old computer to a new one a few weeks ago, I also found that several files, sometimes whole sub-folders had somehow failed to copy across. RE: [LegacyUG] speaking of sources
Michelle, The beauty of Legacy is that everyone can enter data based upon their own individual preferences and style. Personally, I never delete a source, even when the information contained in the source has proven to be wrong. Instead, I add the source to a properly titled Disproven event i.e., Disproven Birth Date, Disproven Death Date and detail why and how the particular event was disproven in the Notes section. The Correct source is then applied to the proper event i.e., Birth Date, Death Date. This helps me to provide validly documented information, as well as dispelling some of the wild family traditions, or stories, that have been passed down from generation to generation. This is just my preferred method and 2 cents worth, everyone has perfectly valid and different ways of doing things. I wish that you could delete multiple sources at one time using the windows shortcut (hold down the CTRL button and then select multiple entries) and also add a source to multiple fields (without using the assign to ALL) Many times I use a not so reliable source until I get something better. For example, I might have the IGI as a source for someone full name, birthdate/place of birth and death date/place of death as well as the relationship to his/her parents. Then I get I copy of a death certificate which has all of that info. I have to delete the IGI sources one at at time from the person and then assign the new source to each field one at a time. Another example is if I get info from a verbal interview from someone and then I find documents to back up the information. I tend to delete the interview and insert the more reliable documents. RE: [LegacyUG] Family Group Sheets
Following generally accepted genealogical standards for researching our ancestors leaves plenty of room for all of us to customize our research to reflect our individual preferences. I agree that there could be more options for customizing the Family Group Sheet, however, of the Family Group Sheets that I have seen and worked with for over 20+ years the Legacy Family Group Sheet outshines them all. For that I salute and thank Legacy. Just my 2 cents. The Legacy format has far too many lines and boxes - I have set a style for my records with pages with a line around, but otherwise clean. Even with no border the Legacy FGS has lines everywhere (or have I missed the place where you can turn them off?)! It puts me off printing them. RE: [LegacyUG] Renumbering MRINs
Hi Wendy, Actually, I stated my question incorrectly, it is the MRINs that I am considering renumbering not the RINs. My apologies to the LUG for hijacking Elizabeth's thread, that certainly was not my intention. I have changed the subject line to reflect this new thread. My reason for renumbering MRINs is for filing and indexing of hard copies of Family Group Sheets, within my direct lines, in a numerical based Binder system. This is a system that I have studied for some time, and can be found at http://www.fileyourpapers.com/legacy/legacy.html If anyone has knowledge of this system, I would be interested in the Pro's and Con's of using it. If I do not renumber the MRINs within my Direct Lines the numbers in the index would not be contiguous and would make it more difficult to locate a particular record. Charles -Original Message- From: Wendy Howard [mailto:wendy.how...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2011 9:46 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Renumbering RINs (was: Phantom people - duplicated RINs) Hi Charles, I was considering renumbering some RINs, until this thread came up. Now I am not sure whether to do it or not. What are your reasons for considering renumbering your RINs? These could be important in your decision-making. If it is, as was mentioned earlier, to give someone close to you in your family a lower number, I personally would not bother. The size of the number is quite irrelevant to the relationship to any other person in the database. My partner is number 246 in my database - that is, I entered 245 other people (including myself, of course) before I added him. It means nothing, except that he was the 246th person entered. We'd been together for almost 20 years at that time. My focus was simply elsewhere for a while. Coincidentally, it's an easy number for me to remember, when I want to find him quickly, such as when I'm using the relationship calculator, but that's accidental - and irrelevant, too. Instead look at it this way - at that point, I had 246 people in my database! That was a big number to me at that stage, and a mark of achievement. If we had a child now (that is NOT going to happen!), his/her RIN would be 10752. It says nothing about what that child means to me, it's just a unique number in the file. Nothing else. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
RE: [LegacyUG] Renumbering MRINs
Hi Jennifer, Thanks for the additional discussion of this system. Since you have re-numbered many of your MRINs, have you experienced any problems with Phantom RINs, or Phantom MRINs, or any other type of problems? I have read the Help Files and Legacy User's Manual that explains how to do this. I guess my greatest concern is there a downside to renumbering those MRINs? RE: [LegacyUG] It's official - Legacy 7.5 is now available
I too have been following this thread for a while. If memory serves me correctly, the Legacy Training CD's support what Cynthia stated below. The plethora of information available to us such as family group sheets on LDS, Ancestry, etc. should be viewed as nothing more than Clues or Leads as to where we should focus further research. Therefore, I would think that the burden of Proof is upon the individual researcher utilizing that information. Actually, one of the IGI records helped me to break through a brick wall that I had been struggling with for years. Although the record was not 100% accurate, it did redirect my research to areas that I had previously not thought of and, as a result, was subsequently able to prove the information. Charles From: Cynthia Pursch [mailto:ci...@mckelleb.org] Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 10:32 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] It's official - Legacy 7.5 is now available I have been watching this for a while now. And quite frankly I disagree. Yes, the family group sheets on LDS and on Ancestry is up to the person who is research, weather they accept what they see is fact or fiction, however, when someone submits their family tree, to whatever site it may be, there is some truth in it, but, for the one researching it, you need to follow through and see if it is fact not fiction. Don’t expect someone that has done the research before to be 100% accurate. Check for yourself if it is true or not. I have for years look at online trees, but if I can’t follow it I do not add it to my tree. But it is a good source as far as breaking down a brick wall if you can follow to prove that the information is correct. For example, if grandma tells you her aunts middle name is Esques or whatever, if you can’t prove it in a document don’t put it in your tree. RE: [LegacyUG] SourceWriter Template and IGI question
Thank you Jenny, I did as you suggested and found additional information about the particular IGI film, however, I did experience a potential problem that some may wish to be aware of. Instead of searching on a name, I clicked on the IGI Records to search, and entered the Batch Number and Sheet Number which found the particular record that I was looking for, however, when entering the Batch Number, Sheet Number, and entering the Source Call Number into the Film Number field the results were No Items Found. Apparently the Sheet Number and Serial Number are the same, because I found a screen that contained a field for Serial/Sheet Number. The Legacy SourceWriter template does ask for a Reference Number, however, I haven't found a correlation between Serial/Sheet Number and Reference Number.
