Re: [MacGroup] Upgrading MacBook Pro HD
Group, Procrastination should be my middle name. A year ago, plus a few months, I had every intention of upgrading my MBP with a new larger, faster HD. I had bought the new drive, and I came to the group for advice, which, like always, was very helpful. But I sat and continued to use the slow and crippled, due to lack of space, laptop. Why?? Luckily, I didn't wait until I had a disaster. For some reason this weekend, I found myself doing all the things needed to make the change. I'm happy to report (oh, please, don't let this jinx it) all went smoothly. I used SuperDuper to make a backup copy of the old drive- took MBP apart- installed new drive- put MBP back together- plugged in USB external HD with SuperDuper on it- booted up from that- formatted new drive- told SDuper to copy from external HD to new blank drive and it worked. I can tell it is running faster now and with the extra space, I can bring iPhoto back internally, instead of having it on another external. Life is good, even if I'm a little slow making it happen sometimes. If I were doing what you intend I would put the new drive in the MBP, put the old one in the enclosure, install Lion (I assume by downloading, or with the thumb drive) on the new drive (after formatting as you say) and then when booting up the first time it will ask if you want to migrate from another machine or TimeMachine I would then choose the old drive in the enclosure. If going from Lion to Lion works as well as going from Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard it should be a smooth transaction. John My 2007 MBP has been giving me hints that it's hard drive won't make it through the summer, so I plan on switching it out with a new one. I am getting a Western Digital 320GB, to replace the 120GB. I have also ordered an enclosure that I can put the old one in after I transfer them. My concern is making the data transfer. Do I first just connect the old one (still in the MBP) to the new one in the enclosure with a usb cable and use Migration Assistant on the Mac? I know I'll need to format the new one as Journaling something to be Mac friendly, but do I have to put Lion on the new one before I 'Migrate'? Or does Lion get moved over too? Re: [MacGroup] Upload / download speeds
And since that last comment was completely over my head, I found this explanation that I wanted to share... You may or may not have heard the term, FTP [def.], but it is something that can come in handy when creating a Web site. FTP is an acronym that stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP client is a program that allows you to easily move files from one computer to another. In the case of creating a Web site, this means that if you create the pages for your site on your computer, either using a text editor or some other Web page editor, then you will need to move it to the server where your site will be hosted. FTP is the main way to do this. There are many different FTP clients that you can download from the Internet. Some of these can be downloaded for free and others on a try before you buy basis. Re: [MacGroup] digital voice recorder
On a slightly different note, I would like to recommend an app that I use on the iPad. It's called 'Notability'. It costs $1.99 and it is a note taking app. The reason I bring it up in this discussion is its ability to record meetings. I would not use it for good quality sound recordings of an interview, but when you want to record a conversation, meeting, or a close up lecture. Bill On Dec 3, 2012, at 10:28 PM, John Robinson prof...@insightbb.com wrote: Good question, I have no idea. If you have enough storage I feel you will be safe there but I don't know about the battery life of an hour of constant recording. Like Jonathan Brian suggest I would get one of the Apps and give it a try so see if it's what you like and if you have enough storage. As Jonathan also said by recording to the iPhone you will be able to move the recording to your Mac very easily. If you find it doesn't give you what you want you have only spent around $4.00 to give it a try so you'll know if the quality is good enough. By not using the Mikey you will not have used your plug for the microphone and you can keep the phone plugged in so there won't be a worry about the battery. If the final result is for you to remember for yourself than I bet you will be fine, if you are wanting to later produce a product that will be distributed to others than the best quality is paramount, that's why I spent a great deal for the instruction I took awhile back. I would NEVER get another shot at this instruction, there would never be any opportunity like this so it HAD to be top quality, several folks were depending on it as was I. If you get a change to record a person of extreme abilities and it's a one time thing then going cheap isn't the best choice. Funny story, I think... I've been wanting my wife to update her iPad to the latest OS but she wasn't really interested, or didn't want to fool with it. For the last week she has been laid up with knee surgery recovery and the iPad has just sat unused. I thought what a perfect time to get the new and improved installed, so one day I hit update and all went smoothly. Last night she was checking her emails on it, and told me how cool it was that since the time changed last week, there was now a clock/ time app on her main iPad home page. I agreed that it was cool and reminded her what a great company Apple is. I'll fess up after her pain meds are gone. Did you know that this place is kept off the GPS register (or however they do this) as I ask the guards the first night how in the world can I set a GPS to pick this place up and they replied you can't. The place is over 100 acres, it had been a mental hospital from the 1930's until the early 2000's when it was abandoned. At that time it was going to cost Indian 60 million to tear it down, then someone decided to turn it into a world class Military, Police, First Responders, Fire training center that these branches FROM ALL OVER the world come to train. The weekend I was there had K-9 dogs from all over the US there for the week, two officers in my hotel were from Maryland. This place is big deal, and very scary. Very scary. No lights at night, yet the place is covered by very high tech cameras that can follow anyone on the property and yet read the serial number on a dollar bill you pull out of your pocket. The place is the most filthy, debris laden place I have ever seen in my life. There is a subway underneath the entire place where training is conducted for a disaster that may happen in our subway systems. There is a section that is for earthquake training, where the buildings are falling apart and leaning from the quake. There is a section that has been hit with a Nuke, total unbelievable destruction that the military needs to train. There is an area where the homes and auto's have been flooded, this was added after Katrina. There is an American Embassy where they train to protect our Ambassador, there is an Arab radio station (internet radio) that is continually sending messages to the Arab world, in the beginning they didn't think this would be a good idea but turns out the Arabs will interact with a voice on the radio much more readily than face to face. I wish I could tell you what it's like, tons of destroyed cars, motor homes, boats, police cars, tons and tons of huge boulders of concrete and uprooted trees. Chairs, tables, tires chrome pieces,, T.V.'s Coke machines, etc. etc. etc. all over the place. And what we needed was the Arab street that the military uses to train. My son and the crew are making a movie, the beginning begins in an Arabian country and they are going door to door trying to eradicate the enemy. They place has Camels, goats, Arabic writing all over the walls, it's very impressive. So that's the background, now for the maps. The first night, Friday, we were there to learn the procedures for the weekend. There was a member of the base that was assigned to the movie crew the entire weekend. We worked 24 hrs straight from 6:00 a.m. Sat. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday and he stayed with us the entire time. But, on Friday night we left under a good bit of rain, and total darkness I had to find my way back to the guardhouse to get to the highway. Made a bad turn somewhere and I ended up on a road that must have been made for a tank, it was very scary for I had NO idea where I was and no way of finding my way out. Finally the iPhone picked up the ATT tower and I ask it from my current location to my hotel in Seymour, and by golly after a few seconds (that seemed like an hour) Siri told me to head a certain direction and from then on she did her thing beautifully. Turn my turn, through subdivisions, down alleys (I am not kidding) on the darkest of nights. Finally I got back to the state highway and headed toward Seymour. After several miles

On your iPad/ Touch, in the mail app, when you see your list of mail to be read, in the top right corner, look for the edit button. After pressing it ,you can tap the circle next to any email that you want to delete. After selecting them, press the delete tab. Apple has recently added a feature to mail called VIP mail. I haven't gotten into it yet, but somehow you can mark, or designate contacts/ email addresses to be VIP contacts. The VIP mail goes in a VIP mailbox and everything else stays in the main inbox. minutes, awaiting instructions. Intego, which had to update its anti-malware signatures upon discovering the threat, refers to it as OSX/Crisis. The good news is that the security firm has yet to find OSX/Crisis in the wild; the company only stumbled upon it over at VirusTotal, a service for analyzing suspicious files and URLs. This Trojan is like most: when run, it installs silently to create a backdoor. What makes this threat particularly worrying is that depending on whether or not it runs on a user account with Admin permissions, it will install different components, which use low-level system calls to hide their activities. Either way, it will always create a number of files and folders to complete its tasks. If the dropper runs on a system with Admin permissions, it will drop a rootkit to hide itself. The malware creates 17 files when it's run with Admin permissions, 14 files when it's run without. Many of these are randomly named, but there are some that are consistent. With or without Admin permissions, this folder is created: Read more at http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/24/osx-crisis-new-mac-trojan-discovered-in-the-wild/#7cryKSIsRDXO7Z1R.99 On Aug 18, 2012, at 9:36 PM, Bill Micou wrote: This comes from my wife's office IT guy, based on what he heard from his higher ups. Re: [MacGroup] Another unusual lesson
Great info! Your class is very lucky to have you and your creative mind. Way to go. Bill On Apr 20, 2012, at 5:49 PM, John Robinson prof...@insightbb.com wrote: Once again I will be talking to a small audience I am sure but just in case there would be someone out there that could use the info. I wanted to send. A week from tomorrow my wife and I have our 50 year class reunion, I have been working a year to really put on a show for our classmates, more work that you would care to hear. The last item was to make a movie, I had to learn FinalCut X, Motion, Compressor, Color (build into FinalCut X) and I attempted Logic but had to shelve it until after the class but I could do a lot of the audio work inside FinalCut. For the group I will use a projector to a very large screen with Bose L1 speakers for sound. I completed the movie just yesterday so now the trick was to first see if I could get this to work with the projector. I am using a Mini due to the HDMI output, then I will use the earbud outputs to the Bose sound system, I wanted to be sure I could do this and the sound didn't attempt to go out the HDMI cable. No one at Apple had ever tried it but they all thought it would work. So this morning I hooked everything up and this is what I wanted to tell the group. The HDMI would do the video, the sound would go to the BOSE, so I was elated, however I could NOT get the video to play on the screen. I could see other items on the large screen but no movie. After setting up the resolutions for the projector I turned on mirroring and everything would show up but the video. What the heck? I disconnected everything from the projector and moved it to a flatscreen thinking there may be a setting in the projector I didn't know about. Nope, same thing on the flatscreen. I spent forever and by accident I found the problem. WHEN you are running a movie in Quicktime, at least under the setup I was using, you have to change to FULL SCREEN (In Lion), the screen rolls around and there is your video. Take it off Full screen and you are back to whatever is on your desktop, be it a spreadsheet, iTunes, etc. etc. but watching a movie in Quicktime REQUIRES FULL SCREEN to work. Maybe there is a setting I couldn't figure out but no need this works perfect. You can't control the volume with your keyboard using Fullscreen, that takes you out of fullscreen and your video is gone (hidden) but you can use a Front Row remote to control the Mini, including the sound, and it doesn't alter your video at all. I will film more at the Alumni Banquet, our party after the banquet at a local restaurant, then I will film the big party Saturday night. When all this is done I will add this to what I will show my classmates, end with a section about our families (many of the group have sent me their entire family photo's) and THEN I will burn a DVD which I will mail to everyone in the class so they won't have to mess with this, they can just play the DVD but for me using it Saturday night I had to figure a way to play this in Quicktime. Turns out it's pretty cool. [MacGroup] idvd?
Hello Group, I have been trying to catch up on software updates, version changes, and outdated programs, and in checking what I had and what was new, I had a question. When iLife programs were in a suite, I got good at editing my video movies in iMovie, and then throwing it over to iDVD to make a very useful DVD movie. When the new iMovie (version 8) came out, it changed what I knew to do, and I quit learning how to be Cecil B. DeMille. Now I'm looking to update iMovie and iDVD, but I see no iDVD program. Did the Final Cut Pro program , take that process over? Or is it built into the new iMovie (I hope so)? I know, and I think it's a shame. What will my children's children be able to look at to see their past/ our present? A box of hard drives, sd cards, and memory sticks that have no possible way to access them. They will be in the same boat as the aliens that found our highly advanced LP record with very important messages on it. Would you be able to put the program you create on a flash drive for the classmates? Many TVs, and attached gaming consoles have a USB port. Re: [MacGroup] ancient iPod: that syncing feeling
Alex, I wish I had an answer, but I too have that model that has been sitting on a ac powered speaker stand next to the bed for the last 7 years. I probably last synched it 6 years ago. I have been wondering what would happened if I synched it. Is the battery fully charged? After searching for similar problems, I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2360928?start=0tstart=0 and the solution back then, in 2010, was to reinstall iTunes (do not uninstall first, just reinstall iTunes on top of the current iTunes). I hope that helps. Bill On Aug 5, 2011, at 9:55 PM, Alex Whitman wrote: I have an iPod from 2003 or maybe 2004, the 3rd generation, with a touch wheel, 4 buttons and a firewire dock. Besides Macs, my other passion is bicycles and the freedom I get when riding one. I have had, thankfully, few close calls with cars and their drivers. I make every effort I can to establish eye contact with a driver at an intercession, or to make them aware that I am on the road with them and I am a person. I am NOT a car/driver hating bicyclist. Unless we all started driving Hummers, there's plenty of room on our roads for all. Every time I look in my mirror and see a driver behind me talking on the phone, I wonder if that call will distract them from seeing me, and I give them extra room. A conversation on a phone, not texting, no movies, but lack of attention and it could have taken the girl, her passenger, or the man in the truck's life. I am sure you notice the folks around you when you drive, seemingly well over 50% are talking on the phone. Now that we have the technology and spend so much of our lives in our vehicles what is needed is a safer system to do both conversation and texting for it IS going to continue and if we try to regulate it then the danger will become more pronounced as has been proven in several states. It's a major problem for our society, the insurance companies, and those with loved ones that have been lost due to this inattention. If Apple would address this issue but not with bluetooth in the ear (that just hasn't been accepted) then they would sell more phones than all the others combined. Maybe someday an intelligent Math professor will come up with such a solution. Re: [MacGroup] Reader function in Safari
Apparently it is only on pages where Safari thinks you are on a page with an article - and ads. Safari 5 has a nice little button next to the URL that effectively kills the ads, strips off the site's branding and presents the text in nicely-formatted book-style pages. According to Apple, Safari Reader removes annoying ads and other visual distractions from online articles... So you get the whole story and nothing but the story. Well thanks Steve, that's a real big help. The Reader button appears for pages where Safari has figured out you're on a web page with an article. Then if you click on the button the web view is greyed out and drops into the background, and the content of the article is displayed in crisp type on a white background. If the article has illustrations in it these will be picked up, but it seems interactive content might not be. Reader also reformats multi-page articles into one continuous, clutter-free view. They still show up as pages, but you just scroll through them vertically. It's not exactly an ad-blocker, because although ads don't appear in the Reader-ized version, the page and all of its ads have to load before the Reader button becomes available. Nor is it possible to to simply enable Reader and browse your way through a Jobsified, minimalist designer web - links do appear in Reader-ized text, and if you click on them you open a normal web page, which then has to load before you can click Reader. [MacGroup] moving iphoto pics to free up hd
Well group, that subject line tells my problem. I need to remove - but not delete forever - pictures from my MacBook Pro, in order to free up some space. Many of the discussions I've found talk about moving my iPhoto library to a new spot on the external hd and telling the MBP where to find iPhoto when it starts up again. I don't think I want that. Can't I just move a thousand iPhoto pics to another drive, use the free space for movie importing, editing, etc., and maybe later, move same pics back? Maybe if I had one of those portable external hard drives, I would feel better about moving the iPhoto library permanently, but for now, all I have are these desktop externals that I wouldn't want to travel with. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bill Micou ___ MacGroup mailing list MacGroup@erdos.math.louisville.edu http://www.math.louisville.edu/mailman/listinfo/macgroup

Re: [MacGroup] mwv player
You know John, I have both Flip4Mac and VLC on my mac, and I'd forgotten about Flip4Mac. Actually, when I play a video, I have no idea what is opening/ converting/ playing it. It all happens so seamlessly. I did a search of Flip4Mac vs. VLC and got this answer: (there must be another converter called 'Perian' out there) Flip4Mac only provides support for Microsoft video codecs whereas Perian provides that and more. I'm not sure you actually need Flip4Mac if you have Perian, but Flip4Mac is what Microsoft now offer instead of their own media player for Mac which they discontinued. I have both installed. VLC on the other hand is a media player application that can be used as an alternative to the Quicktime player. It uses the same open source codec library as Perian and adds support for some more esoteric codecs/formats. However, I very rarely come across a video file that only VLC can play. What VLC does offers over the Quicktime player is proper playlist support. Although you can achieve simple playlist functionality using Quick Look by selecting multiple files in Finder and pressing the space bar or Cmd-Y. I love it when my boss - a Windoze XP user - can't open a file and will send it to me to easily convert on my Mac. It just works... Re: [MacGroup] face book.com
Sorry Marta- it has happened... St Mary's NHS Trust and Imperial College London are piloting a scheme where medical robots will cover ward rounds. Remote Presence (RP6) Robots allow a medical expert to visually examine and communicate with a patient from anywhere in the world, via the machine, using wireless technology. The robots (nicknamed by staff Sister Mary and Dr Robbie) can also be used for surgical teaching and even videoconferencing. The robots are controlled with a joystick from a remote site. The doctor 'driving' the robot can view the patient, ask questions and read patient records, view X-rays and test results from the console. The patient sees the doctor's image on the robots 'face'. Although the robot does not physically examine the patient it allows face-to-face contact between the doctor and patient, providing immediate access to specialists. Parv Sains, project lead, Surgical Specialist Registrar and Research Fellow, said benefits include allowing patients direct access to experts worldwide and to the doctor who performed their surgery, even if they cannot be physically at the patient's bedside. Re: [MacGroup] face book.com
Marta, I don't use it like some people who appear to be glued to nothing else but their facebook page, but I can see some of it's attraction. It allows an individual to keep in touch with friends and family in a very simple way. I have an uncle in St. Louis who is active on FB. By seeing his postings on his FB page, I know what activities he's interested in, how his sons and their families are, and what he thinks of UK losing to Tenn. People who he has allowed to see his FB page and his postings can comment on what they think with short postings of their own. You can also post albums of your own pictures for your 'friends' to see on your page, and even share pictures with others. One nice thing I found with the pictures was how someone else can 'tag' or identify people for you in your own pictures. Example - my wife I went to Henderson, KY for a family reunion. I knew 5 out of 50 people, and my wife probably knew half of them. I took lots of pictures and posted them on my FB page. I told the relatives the pictures were there and to go see them. They were able to edit the descriptions of each picture to tell who was in each picture. Sweet! Now I know who those other 45 people are. True, it would be much better to pick up the phone, and have a wonderful one-on-one chat, but in many ways, this is the digital way of doing just that. Be very wary of the Facebook farms! There's Happy Farm, and Farmville, and Farm Town. These must be extremely addictive and I've heard there exists no cure from their spell. Bill M. Re: [MacGroup] Sync
Anne- I started to answer you in my own words, but found this discussion which I copied/ pasted: I am frustrated as i spent two hours updating mobile me contacts to have them lost. How do I change direction of sync (ie computer to mobile me vs mobile me to computer)? I cannot seem to remember how to change it, depending on what computer I am using. Thanks. Re: sync direction Posted: Nov 23, 2009 8:18 AM in response to: katjack10 Reply Email When you first do a sync (or restart after having turned it off) you are asked whether you want the device in question to over-ride MobileMe, or MobileMe to over-ride it, or to merge data. If you have more than one computer or device you would pick one to be the master, and have that over-ride MM; then with the others you would have MM over-ride them. After that there is no 'direction' or it wouldn't be a sync; any change will be reflected on all devices and MM after a sync has taken place. So in your case you should turn off syncing (on all computers if you have more than one), decide where the correcrt set of information it, and restart syncing on that machine proceeding as above. So you won't see the arrows indicating which direction it will synch unless it is the first time synching. I'll keep looking to see if there is anything else that explains it better. Re: [MacGroup] mailing photos by iPhone
Marta- why don't I have an iPhone? That a question I ask myself often. Especially since I find myself choosing where to eat out based on their wi-fi availability. I can do all you mentioned if I have a wi-fi connection. I'm also tired of explaining, no, it's not an iPhone - it's a ipod Touch, all the magic except the phone. The sad truth began a year or so ago, in a Verizon Cellular store. The family has had Verizon service for years. My daughter was getting a replacement phone, and as we were waiting for a rep to help us, I told my wife, I'm stepping next door for a minute, remember, we agreed not to sign up for another 2 years. I want to change to ATT soon. Somehow during my absence...well, these things happen. Someday, I will have fulfilled my indentured status and be free to say, Yes, it's the new iPhone 7 I've seen Progue's video. I carry it with me on my Touch! Sorry to hear of your ailment, please rest up and get well soon. And don't think of yourself as lame, I think of you as sharp as a tack and humorous too.
