Re: creating Iphone ringtones with amadeus

2010-06-21 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Sarah,

You can export the selection without saving it to a new file. Once the
selection is exported, Itunes will open. WHen you hit command W in Amadeus it
will ask if you want to save the changes to the song, I always select don't
save and you're good to go. You have your nice little ringtone in the Ringtones
folder.

 Hi all,

I have just discovered how to create ringtones other than using ringer. In
the Amadeus file menu, there is an option export as Iphone Ringtone. WHen
you click it, it will ask you if you have selected copy files in to Itunes
library automatically or something like that. You can do this under advanced
preferences in Itunes. I forget what the exact setting is, but Amadeus will
tell you. Once you click okay, you will be asked which format you want to
save it. It's defaulted to AAC I think. I left it as is, and clicked okay.
After that, you should see your new ringtone appear in your ringtones folder
within Itunes music. I hope this is helpful to someone. Just spent the $15
on Ringer, which I think is a good app, and not everyone has Amadeus :).

problem with multiple macs on same wifi network.

2010-06-21 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has encountered this one. I have three macs at home,
and when any two of them are on, and trying to use the wifi router, the entire
thing falls over.

Any of several things happen:
1.  one of the machines cannot connect to the network;
2. the router itself drops connectivity to the broadband service provider.

I don't think it's an issue with the number of machines, as connecting a mac
and a windows machine (or two) doesn't cause this.

Anyone any ideas?

Color Replacement for the Mac

2010-06-21 Thread KeelhaulChris
Hello, I'm working in a Mac driven workplace and they're trying to
move some of their visually impaired agents up to the newer software
they use. However, they are having a hard time changing the fonts,
some kind of conflict. What I wanted to know was whether or not there
was a program that can change the screen colors like ZoomText can.
I've found Nocturne and Blacklight which tint the screen, but it may
not be enough for some of the agents. I really need a program that
will replace colors with others.

Also, the in-house software that they are using is web-based, Firefox
specifically (not sure if it works well with other browsers). If I
could find a similar program that only worked on the web that would be
okay as well.

Re: Do you need a mixer to broadcast on a Mac?

DJ is a mixer. your left and right arrows switch from table 1 to table 2
respectively. I haven't figured out how to use the mic yet. I have a dj gig
this weekend, so I will more than likely take a mixer with me just for the mic,
but other than that, I think I am just going to use dj, my external hard drive,
an amp, and my speakers. That's pretty much all you need, unless you throw an
eq in there to model the sound for the area you are in.

RE: Install iOS 4 today!

2010-06-21 Thread Bryan Smart
Hi.

No, there are lots of other options for people on a budget. There are all sorts
of phones from LG that have built-in speech for basic functions like phone
book, call log, and text. You can get them on other carriers than ATT. You can
even get low cost Windows smartphones on Verizon with MobileSpeak.

Even if you get an iPhone, it isn't required that you use lots of mobile data.
The Wi-Fi access is there for people on a budget, and the basic phone features
don't require Internet access.

Owning an iPhone, and also using it a lot over 3G, is totally an individual
choice.

The only thing that will annoy me is, if we pay more for Internet access, and
the quality situation still doesn't improve. I think that it will improve a bit
when many of the outrageously heavy network abusers get their first phone bill,
and realize that they've streamed 20GB this month because of leaving Internet
radio on all day every day. I think that will cause them to be a bit more picky
about when they use the network. Some people will pay, no matter what ATT
charges. Some people will cut back a bit. What I'm really looking forward to is
having the abusers kicked off with big bills, so they'll stop monopolizing the
network. I normally don't use that much 3G network when I'm out. I mainly just
access e-mail, web sites, and data for apps like GPS. When I'm traveling, or on
business trips, I'll use apps like Netflix or Pandora much more than usual. It
isn't so bad to pay a bit more during those times to be able to get
entertainment while I'm waiting in an airport terminal or such, or if I can't
find a Wi-Fi signal for my laptop.

You know, I was angry about this. The more I think about it, though, the more
 I like it.

Recently, when I travel to any large urban center in the US, network
performance on my phone becomes degraded. Didn't used to be that way. Has
become much worse in the last year or so. I know that is because, in large
part, to all of the bazillion people on their iPhones. Previously, those
people either didn't care, or didn't know enough, to affectively do anything
on a smartphone that would consume a lot of bandwidth. Now, anyone can go get
a cheap iPhone, and start lapping up all the bandwidth for $30 per month. You
don't need many of those people in your area before most of the network
 capacity is gone.

Sure, data will cost a bit more now. I'd like to pay less, but I can afford
to pay more. However, paying more has the added benefit that most people
won't be able to pay more, or at least will carefully consider what they're
doing before they leave Pandora running on their iPhone all day at their
desk, sucking up all of the capacity in the cell, etc. They'll be worried
about bills now, which means they'll stay off the network, which means more
 bandwidth for me.

I've noticed that just about any business that offers all you can use or all
you can eat service starts to quickly drop off in quality. Think of those web
hosting companies that promise unlimited bandwidth. Sure, the bandwidth for
your site is unlimited, just like the bandwidth for the other thousand sites
that they host are unlimited. The result is that you can download all you
want, at a snail's pace. Who goes to a buffet restaurant for fine dining?
It's better to pay a company a fee that actually manages to cover the costs
for the service that they provide. If not, well, you descend in to the
wonderfully high quality of unlimited web hosting and buffet dining. I think
that I get more upset with ATT's network being clogged than I am about the
price. If I can pay more to have it work well, then sign me up.

you an play ogg files with dj. And it is just what is says, a virtual dj set.
you get 2 turn tables, and a mixer. It interfaces with iTunes and allows you to
mix your music as if you were a dj, complete with beat matching fading, and
turn table fx like back spins, breaks, and it even takes advantage of the A U

The cost for this program is around $50

iTunes Store and movies

2010-06-21 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi guys,

So, I figured that I'd finally pop the question and ask someone.

A few days ago, I wrote to a Danish Mac mailing list about this as well, but I
have heard nothing. I have noticed for a long time now that the Movies and
TV shows menu buttons are gone from my iTunes Store source. I'm pretty sure
they used to be there when I first used iTunes, and they didn't disappear

Does anyone else have this problem, particularly non-native English speakers?

I'm really sad now. Don't say they took it away. I swear it used to be there.

RE: installing windows on macs? What are the advantages/why do people opt for this?

2010-06-21 Thread Bryan Smart
Agreed. I think what I like most about the Mac is that I can run both at once.
I like Mac for many tasks, but, honestly, Windows is better at several things.
Doesn't matter. When using a Mac, I can run either.

Of course, on a Windows machine, I could also run another OS like Linux, but,
even as someone that's been to college for Computer Science, and worked
professionally as a software engineer, I don't enjoy having to geek out on low
level details on most tasks like is required with Linux. For me, anyway, the
Mac OS is the most accessible Unix that I know of. It is what I wish Linux
could have become. I can get low level if I want, but I don't have to. And, of
course, VoiceOver is so much better than Orca, and Alex handily beats all of
the speech engines for Linux.

I kind of cheer Linux on in a way. This is probably a subject for another
thread, but the reason that I think that OS X ended up so much better as a user
friendly Unix instead of Linux, is that Linux makes it too easy for everyone to
have their own way. Choice is a good thing, but the cost is that everyone has
their own way, and trying to make all of those choices fit together/work
together is a huge challenge. In some ways, I think that is a harder challenge
than what Microsoft has to deal with by getting Windows to run on so many
different types of computer components. I used to be for choice over all other
considerations, but that peaked when I was a teenager, and was interested in
computing for the sake of learning about computing. Now that I need computers
for my business, I get real annoyed when I must research a computing problem in
too much detail. I *can* figure it out, but I would rather spend my time
working with the computer, instead of on it. Anything that saves me time and
decreases complexity is worth the money that the person or company is asking.
This is why I've switched to Apple stuff, even for situations where I don't use
OS X.

Bryan

Hi Olivia.

I thought I'd reply to some of your message.

The reason why I have windows on my Mac is:

1. I need to keep my windows mobile up-to-date (even though in due course I'll
have the Iphone.

2. The reason why I switched to the Mac was my constant losing of jaws licence
counts.

3. I like to keep my hand in all technology and as Mark has said, sometimes
you need windows to run programs such as Goldwave that I use along with a host
of windows products which I use from time to time.

I'm a great believer of using all the technology available to me and believe in
choices and do not wish to keep my eggs in one basket as it were.

 Hi Everyone,
Now, this is just my opinion, so don't flame me to much, OK? :) I just don't
understand totally why people install windows on the mac and what they use it
for? It seems to me, and my admittedly limited experience with windows over
the last few years, that it just simply isn't worth the trouble and expense
for most people. Consider that windows isn't accessible out of the box, so
you've often got to get some expensive third party solution like Jaws to make
it accessible to you, as well as purchasing windows. I guess the question
I'm asking here, is if you're going to shell out the cash for windows, and
the third party access solutions, why get a mac in te first place? Also,
from a VO users prospective, how difficult is it to switch between the two
 operating systems?
I'm just curious, and if you're using windows, I would be interested in
knowing why and how you switch between the OS's?
Thanks for appeasing my curiosity! I'm sure there are totally good reasons
for using windows on a mac, I'd just like to know why/what they are!

Re: Color Replacement for the Mac

2010-06-21 Thread Chris Moore
Not sure if there is an app to change screen colours like zoomtext, have you
tried writing to accessibil...@apple.com? as for the Firefox bit, you could
create your own CSS which you get Firefox to use instead of the CSS that is on
your web server.

was a program that can change the screen colors like ZoomText can.

Re: problem with multiple macs on same wifi network.

2010-06-21 Thread Scott Howell
Anne,

Like you, I also have a number of Macs and iPhones connected to the wireless
network and I am not or have not experienced any problems.
I am curious if all of the machines on the network are configured to use dhcp
or a mix of dhcp and static. It should not matter, but if using dhcp and if it
is possible, I would use dhcp reservations to ensure each machine gets the same
address. This is sort of like static, but yet new machines can get addresses.
Just a thought from my perspective, which may be of little benefit. :)

To use the mic, press shift-m, then right arrow over until you come to a

resolved: changing sheets in Numbers.

2010-06-21 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi,

I found a solution to the problem of changing sheets. The keyboard shortcut
Command-PageUp does the trick. However, there is one caveat. Voiceover seems
to have difficulty with this aspect of the application. SO after switching
sheet, it's best to stop interacting with the table, and the layout area. Then
you can simply interact again, and the information is correctly read.

Hope this helps someone,

Transfering music to iPod on Windows.

2010-06-21 Thread David Hole

Hi folks.
Does anyone here have a great way to transfere music from my iTunes in
windows to my iPod Touch? By now I have a playlist that I sync with, but
that's absolutly not a good solution.
I use my Mac to sync apps and podcasts with the iPod, and when I tried
syncing audiobooks, all the music I synced with the Windows-box got lost.
I hope that if I can handle the music part manually, maybe this don't
happens.

Kind regards David

I have the same exact issue. Are you using a linksys router? I'm not sure what
goes on, but it seems to topple over when I want to do filesharing, which works
flawlessly but that is when it falls over. I have no clue why this happens but
either a reboot or a reboot of the router does the trick. I've got an iMac and
a macbook here and wouldn't have a clue. But I have tried printer sharing and
it works flawlessly as well.

Take care

you were talking about. Do you have to have a plug-in to do that or
does Firefox have a built in feature for it? It sounds like it might

Ah I'm just a lowly classical broadcaster! lol! but can you duc the music beds

I have just discovered how to create ringtones other than using ringer. In
the Amadeus file menu, there is an option export as Iphone Ringtone. WHen
you click it, it will ask you if you have selected copy files in to Itunes
library automatically or something like that. You can do this under
advanced preferences in Itunes. I forget what the exact setting is, but
Amadeus will tell you. Once you click okay, you will be asked which format
you want to save it. It's defaulted to AAC I think. I left it as is, and
clicked okay. After that, you should see your new ringtone appear in your
ringtones folder within Itunes music. I hope this is helpful to someone.
Just spent the $15 on Ringer, which I think is a good app, and not everyone
 has Amadeus :).

All web browsers have the accessibility feature of being able to use an
external CSS (Case Cascading Stylesheet) You could import your existing style
sheet into a stylesheet creator for something like Adobe Dreamweaver and just
change the font and save it under a different name.

Talking Wallpaper

2010-06-21 Thread Chris Moore
Well struggling to find the 100 new features, but have found one that I did
request. When going into setting and selecting Wallpaper you now get a
description of the image as you roll your finger over them, before the update
the wallpaper image was just read out as image. Very useful and hope other
developers follow this example.

Noticed that some applications actually now speak out corrections and
suggestions as not many did apart from SMS etc.

Very disappointed to see the same ringtones and no ability to assign one from
iPod library and there is still the usual rubbish text alert sounds with no
option to select additional ones. You still can't change the email alert sound
either.

Was also hoping for the ability to create groups so `i can send a circular of
jokes to a group of friends. The only way you can create groups is via the
Address Book on the Mac, not sure how Windows users would achieve this.

I am hoping that messages that failed to send will become pending and auto send
once a signal becomes available.

Was really hoping for more good phone features, but the improvements to mail
are very welcome and I love the touch typing feature and I really did not think
I would but I can type much faster now.

Anyone else found any other hidden gems in 4.0 apart from the ones Apple told
us about? Does anyone know if there is anywhere online that lists the full 100
features?

Also noticed on the screen locke page you don't have to double tap to unlock
anymore, you can now slide to unlock too just like a sighted user. I am
pleased about this as I am sure us blind folk are capable of sliding our finger
across the bottom of the screen.

I think white on Black could be improved, really this is just a negative image
and looks awful with wallpapers, photos and web pages. Why did not Apple just
add a theme for the text and background colour to invert only on calendars,
iPod, Text Messages, Email and Settings screen but leave the nice buttons blue
and the coloured icons and photos as is. My mum likes to use white on black
text in sun light situations, have set her phone to toggle between negative and
positive with 3 button clicks of the home button. Come on Apple?

Curious.

What I wanted to know was whether or not there
was a program that can change the screen colors like ZoomText can.
I've found Nocturne and Blacklight which tint the screen, but it may
not be enough for some of the agents.

OS X has a built-in ability to invert all the colors on the display.

Press Command-Option-Control-8 to invert all the colors and press it
again to uninvert them.

I'm not sure how this compares to Nocture or Blacklight, but maybe
this will work for some of your colleagues.

Also, the in-house software that they are using is web-based, Firefox
specifically (not sure if it works well with other browsers).  If I
could find a similar program that only worked on the web that would be
 okay as well.

Accessible Firefox themes might help with the Firefox interface
itself, although they won't affect the webpages:

http://www.accessfirefox.org/Firefox_Accessibility_Themes.php

If worst came to worst, you could certainly build your own custom CSS,
but that could require a fair bit of CSS knowledge. Before doing that,
try just enforcing your own color choices via Firefox's options, via
Preferences, Content tab, Colors button, untick Allow pages to choose
their own colors. This is not foolproof as it turns of background
images, which are erroneously used as content images by some websites.

Hope that helps.

Nope, an old Netopia router which isn't very good. However, the similarity is

 1.  one of the machines cannot connect to the network;

I don't think it's an issue with the number of machines, as connecting a mac

iBooks issue on iPod touch and possibly iPhone

2010-06-21 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi folks,

I've noticed an undesirable happening with iBooks on my touch. Upon double
tapping the button to buy a book, it doesn't seem to work and that button
disappears. When I tap and hold until the pass-through noise is heard, I can
get it to go past the book info screen.

So far, I've had one other person confirm it on her iPhone and wonder if anyone
else with iPod touches and/or iPhones wouldn't mind trying this out. If you
find the same, I reckon we should report it to Apple

Thanks,

Blake

how to add voices to language rotor.

Hi list,
I have a question about the language rotor in voiceover. I want to have the
option to choose between the US english, australian english, and UK english
voices. However, right now it is only showing the US and australian voices. How
do I add the UK english one to the mix as well? I tried going to accessibility
and voiceover, and selected the language rotor button. I then dragged the
british english voice just below the australian one which is first. Still it
does not appear as an option. What am I doing wrong?

Re: how to add voices to language rotor.

2010-06-21 Thread Esther

Hi John,

There should have been an option for British English on the language
rotor. Did you not find it? If I select U.S. English, Australian
English, and British English all these options will appear on my
language rotor, in addition to my default language, with or without the
optional re-ordering. The reason that having the language rotor for
voice selection is better than choosing a region is that you won't
change the date, time, and telephone number entry formats, or your
default currency. In some apps, you end up using your region setting
-- such as Safari, which may use Australia for your country search
if you select that voice.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

reading a long pdf: vo vs spoken word in itunes

2010-06-21 Thread Catherine Kudlick
Hi All,
Someone just sent me a long book manuscript as a pdf. If I wanted to read
it on the go on my ipod touch, what's the best way to do it? Should I use
voiceover? Or is it true that it's possible to convert the pdf to a spoken
word text that I could access through itunes? If so, how do I do this? And
is it easier to use in itunes than in VO? For example, can you set the pace
of speech in these itunes files or mark your place?

Also, can what I read be sync-ed between devices? For example if I start
reading it on my Macbook Pro but then want to pick up on my ipod, would it
sync to where I left off?

Thanks so much, cathy

Re: how to add voices to language rotor.

2010-06-21 Thread Esther

Hi Mary,

If you've found the language rotor under Settings General
Accessibility VoiceOver, at the end of the page, just double tap
Language Rotor. You'll be on a page where the language options are
listed alphabetically. Just double tap to make your selection. The
first entry will be Australian English, and if you flick right there
will be a reorder button. You can swipe up a couple of times to
reach U.S. English. Greek is just below that, followed by Russian,
which is announced with the Russian voice. Just double tap any
entries you want to add so you'll hear Selected. Exit by double
tapping the VoiceOver, back button at the top left. Then, when
you're in a text field or on a web page, use the rotor until you hear
Language, and swipe up or down till you reach the language you want.

If you have a bluetooth keyboard, there are also now hardware keyboard
settings under Settings General Keyboard International Keyboards
once you double tap the language you've selected. (The page will have
both Software and Hardware Keyboard layout options.)

Hi Esther,
Well, I do feel stupid. I saw all the languages and the reorder buttons, and
for some reason, it never occurred to me that I had to double tap to select the
language, so convinced was I that the buttons held the key to the problem, as
in, double tap and hold and them maybe something could be deleted. the Russian
voice is pretty decent, better than I thought it would be, as is the Mexico
Spanish voice. Pretty darned cool! I wonder if Ibooks will have foreign
language texts eventually; I suspect I'll wait a long time for anything in
Russian, though. smile

Re: how to add voices to language rotor.

2010-06-21 Thread Esther

Hi Mary,

Try this web site for Russian language texts:
http://ilibrary.ru/text/976/p.1/index.html
I've pointed you to Chekhov's short story, Lady with a Lapdog. I
haven't tried searching, but I imagine it would be possible to find
Russian texts -- just not current titles, yet!. It will be something
to practice using your language rotor on.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: reading a long pdf: vo vs spoken word in itunes

2010-06-21 Thread Esther

Hi Catherine and Joel,

I haven't played with this much, because the eBook options and
capabilities have been changing too rapidly recently. But iBooks has
support for PDFs now. The question is, whether it navigates correctly
and bookmarks, as opposed to straight reading, which can be handled
for documents. PDFs could always be added to the iTunes library. In
fact, there was a software product early on to use iTunes to organize
and store PDF research papers with tagged information. It should be
possible to make an audio file out of a PDF file and put it on the
iPod Touch, but it would take more resources and space. The new iOS4
release seems to support quite a lot, so having VoiceOver read the PDF
on the fly in iBooks would be worth exploring. You'd just check the
entries you wanted on the Books tab. Also, Stanza started
supporting PDFs very recently, but I'm pretty sure you'd still have
bookmarking issues if you played these in Stanza. PDF documents can
now be separately uploaded to Stanza, and some other applications, on
the Applications tab for the device. There's a new section after the
table of applications where you can select the list of apps with
document transfer, and then check the listed documents for that app.
I'm not sure whether you could pick up the reading position when you
sync. You could do this if you made the document into an audiobook,
but it would occupy more space and take more resources to transform.
I think you could use GhostReader, if you have that, as an easy way to
create an audiofile. Or, you could set up an automator action to do
this. I've just never done this for a PDF file, since I can read them
directly, and a lot more easily on my Mac.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: iBooks issue on iPod touch and possibly iPhone

2010-06-21 Thread Esther

Hi Blake and Joel,

Try doing a double tap and hold on the button. What's happening is
that the app is waiting for you to double tap the button again. On
the iPad, where this all works, the button for the price or free
changes into a Get Book button that you double tap again to confirm
your selection/purchase. Then you are prompted to enter your iTunes
password. What I had to do on my iPod Touch was locate the button
where Get Book should have shown up by moving my finger up slightly
from Get Sample button. Then I toggled VoiceOver off and tapped
once in that location, and toggled VoiceOver back on. I was at the
window where VoiceOver prompts you for you iTunes password, so I typed
that in and the book downloaded. The second time, I tried a double
tap and hold on the button. This might only have worked because my
iTunes password was still active, though. I would report this as an
accessibility issue. The books did show up in my library after I
typed in the iTunes password, but I was experimenting with free books
for this trial run.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi all,
I have installed the Ibooks app on my touch. I'm getting the impression that to
purchase or just get free books, I have to do that from within the app; there
is a 'store button. I was hoping I could shop on my Mac and synch up with the
Touch, but I'm not seeing any sort of ibooks entry there except for the app
itself in the Iphone section of the app store. Am I missing something obvious
yet again? Or must one purchase ibooks on the device one wishes to read them on?
Is there suppose to be a free book that comes along with the app? I'm not
seeing anything installed. I see the bookshelf and title, author and category,
which I presume are ways of sorting the material. but my list is said to be
empty, which would seem to indicate the absence of a sample test book with the
app.

mac book pro, only has the command and option keys on the right side
of the key board whcih prevents me from executing some voice over keys
easily. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.

Is there a folder synchronization utility or software for the mac?

2010-06-21 Thread Alfredo
Over on my windows PC I used the free program Sync toy to synchronize
my downloaded podcast into the book sense. It would only transfer
files that had not been transferred before. This was convenient since
after listening to a podcast on the book sense, I then deleted the
file, and only new downloaded podcast would appear on the book sense
folders, which let me know that they were new podcast. Plus this
strategy allowed me to avoid the clutter of having many files to
scroll to when listening to a podcast. Is there a program for the Mac
that will synchronize folders like sin toy does on windows? Any
synchronization software suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alfredo
