MI Super Workspace Control Manager
Hi All! I know of three workspace control utilities, namely Workspace Control http://www.4thbeachsoftware.com/Products/products.htm Super Workspace http://users.iafrica.com/s/st/stingray/GIS1.htm Workspace Manager http://www.empowergeo.com/authorized/workspace.htm All of these offer enhanced control over MapInfo workspaces, the two latter ones can also pack and compress the tabs and stuff in a workspace for distribution. The first one I use from time to time to clean and investigate workspaces that fail. However, all the websites above are outdated, and the demo license code of Workspace Manager has already expired. The free version of Super Workspace is useless. Workspace control is good but obviously needs further development. I could need a Workspace packager but will not order something I have not been able to test to its full capability. Re: MI Problem while converting georeferenced image to TAB format
David Thibault wrote: Is there any way to translate the HMR format photo to the TAB format without loosing the rotation factor previously applied. Hi David! That depends on what you are trying to do. I'm a bit puzzled when you say you need to rotate the orthophotos. Normal cartographic practice is to have true north 'up' and orthophotos are no exception. If your orthos differ I regret to tell you that the raster engine of MapInfo cannot alter the row/column structure of the image file, but must display it pixel by pixel. By calculating transformation parameters on the control points for the raster file, MapInfo is able to fit the display of vector data as well as possible to the raster image. Since an orthophoto is a cartographic representation, this is not a big deal, but be aware that even an unrectified aerial photo may be used with very good results. At least if your area of interest lies in the center area of the photo. Not much help so far. If you need to rotate your orthos, you can do that with any image handling software. Try to figure out the degree of rotation and use a software (eg photoshop, paint shop) where the rotation can be entered numerically. We are still using MapInfo 5.0 - Can we use mbx program created in the latest version with the earlier MapInfo, for example: mbx made in 5.5 to be used in MI 5.0? Hi Gatot! The policy of MI Corporation is to release MI Pro and MB versions hand-in-hand. This is to enable programmers to use the new functions of each release in programming. If you do not want to do this, it is perfectly all right to continue programming in v 4 and run the code in MI v5, 5.5 and so on. But because code that have been compiled in MB v5 may contain functions not available in MI v4, MapInfo checks the version stamp of the MBX and refuses to run an MBX with a higher version than itself. So to conclude: If you need the new v5 or 6 functions you must upgrade your MapBasic but at the same time, you must be aware that older MI versions will not be able to run your programs. Search the archives of this list for a number of tips to circumcise this problem, it is possible to alter the MBX header but you must be sure to NOT use the newest functions for this to work. Another solution is to keep copies of the old compiler - the manuals describe how to use the compiler from the command line. It must also be said that apart from the version upgrades, absolutely nothing has been changed in the programming environment - it is still very simple to say the least. What we would need are for example template constructs, codeword coloring, realtime syntax check, visual dialog creation etc all of which are common in programming tools of today. But I doubt it will ever happen. Regards, Mats.E -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Marc You probably need to check the settings for the import of data, or maybe prepare an external table for the attribute data that can be linked to the drawing file objects. Check with your AutoCad support, because all the information is in the mif/mid file. You need to remember that CAD systems basically are designed to handle 'papers in a computer', in this case drawings or paper maps. They are not database oriented but file and drawing oriented. Their capabilities to handle and query other than graphic attributes are at the best, an afterthought and not designed into the original concept. This is one of the major differences between GIS and CAD systems, and a constant source of trouble when data must be exchanged. Hi All! When digitizing adjacent features, use the tracing ability of MapInfo. Here's how to trace the nodes of an existing polyline or polygon: 1. Press the S key to activate Snap Mode. 2. Click on a node of the polyline/polygon you want to trace. 3. Move the mouse to another node of the same object. Polyline: hold down the Shift key or the Ctrl key and click. Polygon: hold down the Shift key for the shorter set of nodes or the Ctrl key for the longer set of nodes and click. Pressing the Shift or Control keys highlights the trace path. Click to automatically trace the segments between the nodes and add them to the polyline/polygon you are drawing. Note: you can only trace one object at a time. There must be nodes where you want to start and end the tracing, so you must consider adding nodes if a perfect fit is necessary. Hi gdelzot When installing Adobe Acrobat, two virtual printers are installed, PDF writer and Distiller. Selecting Distiller makes just what you describe, and gives a lot of options. How do you others feel, is it OK to drag map objects to 'where they should be' when a format conversion has been made using inadequate tools or the wrong parameters? Or when a dataset has been delivered in another coordinate system than desired? I do not think so. Maybe I was too hard on David who tried to solve a problem as he saw fit, but I wanted to arouse some debate on the matter. As a producer of map data, I would not like it if my product was treated in such a way, and would certainly decline any responsibility regarding the geometric accuracy of the result. To summarize: I believe that the 'free' translator Arclink delivered with Mapinfo ought to be used for e00 conversion, and that the known projection should be entered during import. Then the map data ought to appear 'where it should be' without further ado. Any information regarding a solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated. Hi All. The obvious solution is of course to synchronize upgrades across your office. Any software implemented in this way is likely to cause nothing but trouble. Seems as if someone is trying to save a buck but that buck is lost many times over in time wasted as you run into trouble. But anyway - a couple of mementos: 1: Do NOT use Word or ANY word processing software to edit workspace files. They are pure ASCII and may easily be completely ruined by inadvertently added formatting codes. Use notepad or a similar tool. 2: MI writes version info into the workspace as needed. I.e. if a workspace contains commands only valid in 5.5, it will say so. (The same goes for tables as a matter of fact). Thus, by changing the version info, earlier MI versions may well be fooled to read the workspace but will then fail in an unpredictable way upon encountering the unknown commands. So to be sure, these commands must be found and removed which may alter the appearance of the workspace altogether. Re: MI Workspace Editing : DANGER DANGER
Hi All! Will Woodruff wrote as a tip for saving wrecked workspaces: What do I suggest you ask? Replace the problem table with a known table that will open in both the Open Table section and the Map From section. Open your workspace. Close the replacement table. Save the workspace. Well, at first this seems as a splendid idea. However, the replacing table cannot be any dummy table. Consider the line Layer 5 Display Graphic Zoom (0, 1500) Units "mi" Label Line Arrow Position Above Font ("Arial",0,9,0) Pen (1,2,0) With Highway Now, if Layer 5 does not contain the column name Highway - the workspace will fail at this point. In fact, it is almost impossible to recognize all references to a missing table in the workspace file. But if the case is a mislaid table, you can give MapInfo a hand in searching: Under Options Preferences Directories you can add up to 4 search paths. If you add the 4 most likely drives or trees, MapInfo will traverse each one in turn until a Table with the wanted name is found. Be prepared that this can take a while. Beware that MapInfo opens the first Table found a name that satisfies the search condition. So if multiple tables exist with the same name (no good practice but common nevertheless) another table than the original may well be opened with possibly fatal results. The obvious choice in the workspace opener should of course be an option to skip and turn off all following references to a missing Table. Re: MI A Question for Surveyors
Bill Thoen wrote: Is there a surveyor in the house? I was wondering how property boundary line distances and acreages are calculated in sloping terrain. Are boundary distances... Hi All! In these matters, an ortographic projection is used per definition (in Sweden at least). That is to say, the monument points are projected on to a plane and acreages and so on are calculated on that plane. This is probably because it had to be that way when they used only paper maps and plans. As long as all use the same definition, this principle works well. This means that in theory you may get more acres of soil when you buy a heavily sloping property. But the house you build will not get bigger unless you make the floors sloping as well. The same principle applies in farming, a sloping field will not give a better yield because plants grow straight up, thus using the same space as on a flat field. I can cope with menus and help texts in english or whatever, that is not the problem. _What then?_ *References to menus and Button Pads by name.* For example, if you add a button to "Tools" it will have no effect in my version, since that pad is named "Verktyg" in Swedish. However, they do have the same number, namely ID 3. The same scheme goes for menus. When contributors supply the source code, I have been able to fix this at times, but not all authors do. And I do not suggest that this should not be necessary. _How can we help then?_ *By referencing to menus and button pads by ID number.* This is the intended method to make MB applications language independent, and I would want all contributors to the MI FTP site to consider the global scope of our list and code accordingly. If you want to create fully localized versions of your apps, I'd be glad to (as time permits) to render into swedish your menus or dialog boxes. Best wishes for the new year! Special greetings go to Bill Thoen, who makes this list possible with his work and never ending patience. Now to my question of the day: I have a problem using my carefully designed maps in a MS word (97) document. The problem has to do with the use of transparent rasters. While these maps print perfectly when used in a MI layout, or printed straight from the mapper window, all transparent backgrounds come out as black when used as a MapInfo Map object in MS Word. I have tested different printers, no difference. Only by using BMP I can get the same appearance - but of course with unacceptably low resolution. I think that one of MIs major assets is the ability to act as an OLE server, shame that this functionality is limited in this way. Or has anyone come up with a solution? Happy Holidays! NOW- after removing MapInfo and re-installing to the path C:\MAPINFO due to a requirement by SoilTec SGIS installation, both machines are slow in loading the same workspace but the machine which was initially slower is now a second or two faster than the machine that was the fastest. I thought hard-coded paths was a thing from 16bit DOS days? Since the re-installs, have you edited the preferences files accordingly? MI: Intelligent Use of ProViewer
Hi All! (Note that the following is NOT intended as Friday humor) I am trying to put ProViewer into intelligent use, and therefore I need to improve the user interface. I would like to be able to add some menu choices and display information in the message window. It is true that this can be done by using workspace files as macros, but apparently only to a certain extent. Printing to a message window works, but the message window closes immediately. By adding a Note clause, this is prevented temporarily but the Notebox blocks you from accessing the message window. The method can be used if you have a limited amount of output, and you can also Set the Message window. Adding Menu items works in a sense, but they are erased at once. I have found no way of preventing this behaviour. Lastly, I tried creating a ButtonPad but this is also erased by the program at once. All the above wor-files work as expected within Professional, but it seems as if ProViewer does not allow alterations. Since these are badly needed, I am wondering if anyone has found a workaround to this problem. Maybe we should issue a contest for the most clever ProViewer scripts of the week? MI: Buffer tool useless in cosmetic layer?
Hi All! A while ago there was a thread concerning the default lat/long behaviour of the cosmetic layer. I have just experienced a weird behaviour of the standard buffer tool when using the cosmetic layer as recipient for the buffer. The *seed* table is in a Swedish coordinate system with 7 digit meter coordinates. The buffer created never gets the right width and the ends get deformed. Only by using the *seed* layer I can get it right which of course is a problem if I want to work with read-only data. Can somebody confirm that this problem is related to the cosmetic layer projection? Also, the smoothness setting seems no longer to have any effect, the buffer has always a large number of nodes whatever I enter in that box. And for all those who have experienced buffer problems using the Concentric Buffer Tool, be advised that there is a bug fix for that at the techsupport center. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: However, the coordinate system (of the cosmetic layer - my comment) is unbounded because we have no idea if people will want to add objects to this layer outside those bounds. I guess having ones data truncated to the bounds seems worse than the opposite behavior described by Steve. Hi All! I most definitely disagree! I think it makes perfect sense to use the same coordinate system and the _same bounds_ (thus the same resolution) as the first map layer for the cosmetic layer. It should not be optional. This is because I think it is unlikely that the average user would want to add objects outside the visibly mapped area. On the other hand, that user will more likely use the cosmetic layer as a transfer place for map editing. And if the cosmetic layer should allow for drawing outside the bounds of the current 'first layer', those objects could not be stored there without increasing the bounds anyway. I'd like to make another suggestion - perhaps it would be possible to change the drawing cursor when you leave the bounds of the editable layer? Make it flip to a stop sign, or a red X on the black +. Then the user would get a visible signal that something is amiss. Now I know that this, and a great many other functions and other useful stuff are described in the MapBasic help files. Why this info is kept secret from MI Pro users I do not know. Of course, some of the functions can only be used in compiled MapBasic programs, but in fact, most can be used in the MapBasic window (or dialog boxes where expressions are created). The MapBasic window, this poorly documented but very useful interface has been execellently described by Mr Jacques Paris, a long-time contributor to this list. His work can be ordered as a booklet, see URL: http://www.total.net/~rparis/more.htm for all details. Bottom line: Get MapBasic - or at least borrow the help file from someone - or buy the above book (I have, it is worth every penny - but maybe it need to be updated now?) I have access to MapBasic, so I run a small MBX at MI startup that places a menu link to the MB help file in the MIPRO main menu. Re: MI JPEG mystery ...
Sorry for the empty posting, my mail system ran a glitch. This is what should have been sent: Scott England wrote: I have a map window, that I have set through code to be 8 x 7 inches. Why, when I save the map window to a JPEG using the same proportions and then open it in a 3rd party graphics package, does it say that it is actually 26.48 x 23.17 inches at 29 pixels per inch?? This seems strange indeed. I believe it has something to do with how your screen resolution is translated into the jpeg engine. Remember that you will get no more than screen resolution (typically 96 dpi) when you save a window in this way. Printing, or viewing this image any bigger will reduce apparent resolution. But you can increase resolution by opting to save the window as a custom larger size. You increase width, height will follow for same ratio. This will produce a larger file, but used in the original size, the image will appear to have a resolution of 4x96=384 dpi, sufficient for most printers. MapInfo can save windows in a variety of formats, and I do not believe that jpeg is the most suitable. This compression technique is best fit for photograps. When used on images with evenly colored areas, with sharp borders such as maps, a 'rippling' effect occurs where areas adjoin. Some color information spills across the border. This effect increases with compression - a parameter you cannot control. MI version 4.5 seems to have used a larger factor than present 5.5 where the effect is not noticeable. But jpegs get bigger. I just tested this: MI version 5.5 eng. Input: Standard World map, displayed full screen on a 14" monitor. Output: Saved window to 100 cm (¨40") width. File formats and size: tif 26542 kB took a LONG time to save jpg 2553 kB psd 1035 kB wmf 305 kB saving almost instantaneous png 148 kB !! OK - so what about quality? Well I brought them all up in PaintShop, in 1.1 viewing scale. No differences can be seen at all! I find this astonishing! Bear in mind that this test was performed on a simple map with few colors. But the example goes to show that file sizes can vary considerably depending on format, without any notiecable difference in image quality. I save all the files to disk (you would save them to the cd) then I manually edit the .wor file in Notepad, changing the directory addresses. That should work well for you. Hi! Yet another way is to make sure that the CD path or drive letter is included in the list of directories where MapInfo will search for tables not found straight out of the workspace info. If you decide to edit the workspace manually, place the wor file in the tree structure so that you can use the notation ..\Mapfiles\ to avoid problems with different drive letters. I often edit workspaces in order to translate cryptic file oriented table names to readable ones. Pity that MapInfo has no good interface for this. This is what seamless layers are for. Check that out. One advantage is that you can exchange individual tiles without problem later which would be virtually impossible if you combined them into one file. MI 5.5 beta longevity.
Hi All. Does anybody know of a way to prolong the life of the 5.5 beta? Mine died under me, and in facing days of Overlay Errors once again. (was so happy while it lasted) No license offence intended, the Swedish version is not out yet, and I can't be exepected to buy an english version just to cover the delay. MI: Geometry Manager - pricing
Hi All! Since my last post I have learned the price for GM is £595/$995. In my opinion, this is far too costly for an essential function in any GIS, and I would seriously ask MapInfo Corp to reconsider. I believe that MapInfo should be a qualified tool for map and data creation, and not only analysis and visualisation. Such a tool should naturally include a topology engine, as well as a basic developer tool. I am thinking of MapBasic. Consider this: Neither MapBasic nor GM (aka Topology Manager) are new products, meaning that the development cost should be more or less covered by now. So squeeezing out a $1000 dollars each appears a bit greedy to me. Consider instead the tremendous competitive edge MapInfo would get if GM and MapBasic were included in MI Professional, at no extra cost. This would give a meaning to the 'Professional' suffix, and beat ArcView that still has to rely on ARC/INFO for serious topology creation.
