One can only hope that it was maintained well and all the stuff that
goes bad by 2-250,000mi has been taken care of. If not $5400 is way too

I'm well aware that these cars can run forever and I've seen some real

I'm doing a resto on the 300CD I got from Jason Stern a few years

Not quite impossible. A friend had his 85 300D catch fire while he was on the

was clogged or the caliper was stuck. Another motorist put the fire out very

you suck out all the fluid in the reservoir then refill with new, then
go to each wheel and bleed it out till you get new fluid coming out.

Probably like a car pulling 50hp on propane. A quick guestimate
is giving me 10+ gallons per hour at $1.60 per gallon, say
50 to 60 cents per kwh. That's really very cheap for home generation,
but I may have guessed low, and it doesn't include other costs,

Do you have an idea what the fuelconsumption is at say pulling 30KW.
1 KWh is ~ $ 0.15 in residental use nowadays.

I pay 4.3 cents per kWH. Thank you Columbia River!
(Other suppliers here charge up to 2x this.)

Our power bill is still something like $250/mo in
winter (electric heat), and I'm told that electric
is again cheaper than gas here. As I'm unemployed,
I'm heating entirely with wood.

Probably like a car pulling 50hp on propane. A quick guestimate
is giving me 10+ gallons per hour at $1.60 per gallon, say
50 to 60 cents per kwh.

I fear it may be in that range. Makes my two 10-gallon
tanks look pretty feeble! Makes the big BBQ tanks look
pretty feeble too. The ultimate plan, assuming we keep
this generator, is to hook it into the (future) hot tub
propane tank.

The first time we use it for real I'll probably learn a
lot more about its consumption. I just hesitate to run
a test 'cause I'm unemployed and don't want to waste it.

DOT 3 4 can be mixed, but the resultant will have properties somewhere
in between. Their characteristics are similar EXCEPT that DOT 3 boils at
a much lower temp and is more hygroscopic. Mercedes approved DOT 3 in
all it's cars until the mid/late '80s when they changed to DOT 4 (maybe
when ABS became common). You can use DOT 3 if you flush it more often
(at least yearly). Dot 4 fluid is usually good for 2-3 years (except
under severe conditions). Present approval lists call for DOT 4+ fluid.

There should be NOTHING in the brake system (providing all the parts are
Mercedes approved) that DOT 3 fluid should cause to break down as long
as it is changed before it sequesters too much water. If the fluid (DOT
3 or DOT 4) is changed in a timely manner, the master cylinder and
calipers will usually last MUCH longer that if the fluid is NOT changed
according to Mercedes' recommendations.

A close friend had a Aries wagon with a *hemi* in it! I'm still
looking for more information on that engine. It was apparently a 2.2
block, with a larger displacement and the Dodge famous hemispherical
head. Had little hemi badges on it and everything. I laugh everytime I
 think of that car.

The short answer to your question is No.

The long answer to your question I will not go into ... however, I
will go into the medium answer.

The first recorded use of a Hemispherical combustion chamber was a
four cylinder affair that powered a car named the Welch. In a HEMI
engine, the top of the combustion chamber is hemispherical. The
combustion area in the head is shaped like half of a sphere. An engine
like this is said to have hemispherical heads. In a HEMI head, the
spark plug is normally located at the top of the combustion chamber,
and the valves open on opposite sides of the combustion chamber.

Most cars prior to the 1950s used what was known as a flat head, and
many lawn mower engines still use the flathead design today because it
is less expensive to manufacture. In a flathead engine, the valves are
in the block, rather than in the head, and they open in a chamber
beside the piston. If HEMI engines have all these advantages, why
aren't all engines using hemispherical heads? It's because there are
even better configurations available today.

One thing that a hemispherical head will never have is four valves per
cylinder. The valve angles would be so crazy that the head would be
nearly impossible to design. Having only two valves per cylinder is
not an issue in drag racing or NASCAR because racing engines are
limited to two valves per cylinder in these categories. But on the
street, four slightly smaller valves let an engine breathe easier than
two large valves. Modern engines use a pentroof design to accommodate
four valves.

My question is, how much rust is throughout. You can clearly see some
in the drivers door in the picture alone, and the pics are rather
small :) Is the engine and transmission strong only for the car to
disintegrate beneath it?

According to Ford fanatic I once worked with, technically his

going, though.

Most cars prior to the 1950s used what was known as a flat head, and
many lawn mower engines still use the flathead design today because it

I believe, thanks to CARB, that pretty much all lawnmowers and such

Joopster -
I think that your system is enough like my '81 107 that I can say that if the
blower fan comes on it is probably not due to a lack of system vacuum. If your
old servo had a cracked case it may be that your servo amp is blown or just
that your 2 Amp fuse for the system is open. If you start the car and run it

Works flawlessly when installed in Mercedes Benz vehicles. Passive,
wireless, no need to tap into wiring harness, easily moved between
vehicles, can be used for home and/or business security no codes to
remember, will not disarm itself until intruder has left the scene.
I have not tested this in any other make of vehicle but see no reason
why it wouldn't work in any car/boat/truck etc. we are currently
developing a more compact unit intended for use on motorcycles,ATVs and

Re: [MBZ] Bike rider, loud pipes

2006-01-26 Thread Curt Raymond
Ahh the old Loud pipes save lives argument. I've read some interesting
studies that indicate this to be at best misleading and at worst absolute
hogwash.
The basic gist as I understand it is that because the sound is
non-directional and because cars are so well sound-proofed that the loudness
sort of blends in with everyday noises and doesn't help.
Worse yet people can be distracted from putting on their makeup or their
cellphone conversation and actually crash INTO bikes as they look around for
where the sound is coming from. Plus some people will get angered by the noise
and their already shoddy driving skills will get even worse possibly causing
accidents around the motorcycle that might not actually include the motorcycle
itself.
Then add that the typical loud bike is a Harley and not as manuverable as a
real (notice the quotes, I'm not looking for flames on that one) sport bike,
and many Harley riders are not serious (those quotes again, on this one I
mean the doctors, lawyers and other prestige Harley riders) riders and as
such will have an ego that doesn't keep them in a safe defensive driving
posture thereby raising the danger statistic for loud bikes.

I find 'em annoying and rude, esp at 6am when somebody cranks one up and I'm
trying to sleep. Probably its not as much the bike's fault as the hillscroggin
mouth breather that only thinks about how cool he thinks he is...

DOT 3 and 4 fluids are compatible, they just have different boiling
points. No need to drain flush with alcohol or anything like that.
Just siphon the reservoir, fill with fresh DOT 4, and pressure bleed
(if possible) all 4 wheels. That's it.

DOT 5 (silicone) fluid is the nasty stuff that can cause problems...
it's not hygroscopic (doesn't absorb water) and you can end up with
rust or other problems due to that. Regular fluid absorbs water, which
is good - but it's also why the fluid must be replaced every year or
two!

Some exotic race fluids have been reported to damage seals or other
rubber bits, btw... but normal DOT 3/4 should never do that.

No, I didn't. Driver error in this instance is due to lack of proper operation
of the vehicle - checking blind spots, failure to adequately judge distance or
speed, etc. How do loud pipes correct this? They don't.

The systemic problem is improperly, poorly, and/or inadequately trained drivers

Re: [MBZ] Bike rider, loud pipes

2006-01-26 Thread Dave M.
I own a streetbike and I agree - mostly. Nearly all stock motorcycles
(well, the Japanese stuff anyway) have mufflers that are so quiet the
bike is near silent, and therefore laregely invisible to cage drivers.
(Don't believe me? Ride a bike on the street for a day, then we'll
talk.) A less restrictive muffler usually frees up a few ponies, and
also sounds a lot nicer. Think of a Camaro with a set of Flowmasters
installed. Deep rumble, but not obnoxious. Same deal with the bike -
it's not silent anymore, but not obnoxious either. And it gets you
auditory visibility, which is important to stay alive on the street
these days.

Now, there is a different crowd, usually with Harleys, that have huge
twin-cylinder engines that like to run straight pipes with NO
mufflers. And those things, especially at WOT, are beyond obnoxious.
They're usually obnoxious at idle, part throttle, and cruising, too...
unlike what I mentioned above (which is usually just questionable at
WOT). If you can't talk over it at idle, there's a problem, IMO. I
think the open-piped Harleys are the ones that cause a lot of anger by
the non-bike crowd. And some of the more, um, mature bikers as well.
;)

Loud pipes can save lives, but they don't have to be ear-splitting and
obnoxious to do so.

Hi Constantine,

The funky looking Vise-Grip pliers are not really needed. They are to
get the roof fully seated forward before tightening the bolts. The two
little plastic install guides are needed, but they're cheap - $1 each.
And, they take the place of the 'self-made' L-shaped pin mentioned in
one of the procedures.

I got the sunroof completely repaired, it works GREAT now. Not nearly
as hard as expected. The worst part is trying to disassemble it when
it's frozen shut. Once you're past that, it's just a matter of
following directions in the manual. I'll be posting more info shortly,
with a bunch of photos.

No, I didn't. Driver error in this instance is due to lack
 of proper operation
of the vehicle - checking blind spots, failure to adequately
 judge distance or
speed, etc. How do loud pipes correct this? They don't.

They let the idiot know you're there, when they might well miss you.

Re: [MBZ] 1st gear start mod

2006-01-26 Thread Dave M.
Does anyone have info on how exactly to do this? A photo, pointing to
the area in question, sure would be nice. I had been under the
impression a major valve body mod was needed. Perhaps the 722.4 tranny
can be easily modified, but the 722.3 cannot, or vice-versa? I'd love
to know more about this... drives me batty on my 1986 300E.

In the early '90s Mercedes saw the error of their ways and allowed the
gas transmissions to start in 1st. Cars built a year or two before 1st gear
starts became standard COULD be converted (it was NOT a cheap
conversion - required that the valve body be removed and some pieces
replaced) but cars with transmissions build before that (about '89 and
earlier I think) can't be converted (you'd need a completely replace the
 valve body).

If I had any personal archives, I could exhume a post I made more than ten
years back on this subject but I don't, so I won't. Paraphrasing, when I was
driving my '89 190E 2.6 and my friend SJB got his new '91 300E with 1st gear
start and I drove it, I was hot to add that feature to my '89. So, after
 repeated
talks with one of the two MB reps in my area, one of them called Montvale, in
my presence, and asked what could be done. The answer was that they had
converted several company cars and the fix was to remove the little spring
 from
behind the kickdown piston. Soon after, the shop foreman, with me watching,
removed the valve body (a few fasteners), removed one of the cheesehead
screws from the end of it (they are numbered) and out dropped a little piston
followed by the spring in question. Reassemble in reverse order. After a
 careful
adjustment of the trans cable (or was it a rod?) I had first gear start. What
 a
 difference!

I carried that little spring in a zip-loc bag in the car for a few years
until I traded it of in '95.

Probably cost about $150 including the fluid change.

A PIG sort of looks like a BBQ tank but is about 4 feet in diameter and 5
feet tall if I recall correctly. Couldn't really be manhandled much unless
empty maybe.

I sort of thought that your propane fuel tanks were a bit on the small
 side.

Bought before I had a true idea of what this thing would eat. Before
it ran, in other words.

Do you know what a pig is? (and I am not saying your generator is a
 pig -
I'm talking about propane tanks) You should have a couple of those if
 you
plan to run that thing anywhere near capacity for any length of time.

Is it the tall BBQ-style tank? I've been eyeing those at Costco.
You can still manhandle them, and they can be turned over for
liquid feed. No POV garbage.

I like the ones powered by the Lister style diesel even better.

Me too! Maybe someday.
