It's a 201, not a 124. 124's are the 300Es, 300Ds, 400Es and 500Es from the
late 80s/early 90s

190D prices have gotten really high in the last few years. He's asking
$5500, which I've seen a few 190Ds go for on ebay. Depending on condition
and how much you're really willing to spend ... might be a winner.

I'm thinking from my experience in the semi-diesel world that I have a lift pump that's
weak. I read 07.1-145 Checking fuel pump and bypass valve and it seems that
the bypass valve can get clogged and needs to be cleaned and the spring lengthened to
increase tension. Is there anyone else that has had an issue similar to this where
cleaning the bypass valve fixed the issue or did they have to replace the fuel pump?

(btw fuel, primer, lift...they all mean the same thing in the big diesel

TIA all,

The lift pump almost never fails (and the engine will still usually
run if the fuel level is above 1/2)!! Look at the tank screen, the
inline filter, the main filter or a plugged VENT line. A plugged vent
line is the thing that most often causes the symptoms you describe in a
Mercedes diesel (vacuum develops and prevents unrestricted fuel flow).

injection harness are the most replaced item and then the engine harness.
you'll go through alot more injection harness's because it sits on top the
motor where the heat is. alot of this has to do with the averall amount of
heat in the engine compartment. I added one of the 92 degree fan switch
modifications from the guy on prodigy so the electric fans come on at 92
instead of 100.

Further to this I'll note not only will you need to replace the
engine wiring, it is also likely you'll replace the throttle
actuators (two) which have prices as much as $3000+ each, depending
of course who can acquire the parts for you. In reading on another
list it has been notice that replacement actuators after oh about 96
have different coloured wiring, leading one to
believe perhaps the wiring or part supplier changed things to the
better. If said vehicle has any cracked wiring instantly subtract $8K?

Lastly I'll note that some folks have discovered that right behind
the engine is a plastic water distribution device (dual mono-
valves?). That has a tendency now to crack (age/heat) and dump all
the coolant. It is a bit ugly to access for replacement, kind of
stick on engine, put engine in car, what you to remove it later? Why
is that firewall in the way.

In general you want to pay a bit extra for a 98 or 99, and ask about
 the evap and wiring.

DID NOT PUT A MOTOR IN THE CAR AND SEE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.is the question

You already know its a 201. They're nice cars. Nimble in comparison to
your 123-126 experience. The Euro 190D I recently picked up looked just
like the one on e-bay. Florida took its toll on the paint. I think the
car is silver in the pics. It looks like cream inside.
It probably really is a good deal except paint can be expensive, then
again, you may want to try clear coating the upper damaged surfaces
only. I went for the whole paint job and stripped all the trim, bumpers
etc off of it. $678, not the greatest but respectable. In the
springtime (maybe sooner), I will help it out a bit.
I don't know if this is good reference but I paid $1200 for mine 1986
2.5 5 Cyl (not 4 as yours is advertised) 62,000 miles, original
owner. I had to do a ton of this and that but I now have a near perfect
low mileage MB diesel for $2600.
If I charged myself for the labor, I may have close to $5,000 in it.
Either of these cars should hold up nicely for a good ten years if
cared for properly. I love mine, had several before, no inherent
problems. Well maybe the wiper.

runs great, looks great, 79 450SEL runs, think has some sort of fuel
problem though, maybe bad fuel pump, 89 420SEL runs, has the new updated
interior etc, wrecked in the front, 87 420SEL is in good shape, engine
bad, engine from 89 will go in it. Oh yea, not sure if the 76 240D runs
or not, looks like it probably doesnt, but has a stick.

2006-01-31 Thread JFreezn

In a message dated 1/30/2006 11:48:28 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

My SD has it's moments of fuel pressure loss. You can be crusing down the
interstate and suddenly feel a power loss that lasts less than 1/2
second...something exactly like taking your foot off and back on the throttle.
 Also,
at cold start it's very rough and needs to have enough throttle to keep at
least 800-900 RPM to run somewhat smooth and not die. Glow plugs are barely 2
years old and the injector pump and injectors were replaced by the P/O (maybe
50kmi ago). I've replaced all the rubber fuel line from tank to primer in
the last 8 months.
I'm thinking from my experience in the semi-diesel world that I have a lift
pump that's weak. I read 07.1-145 Checking fuel pump and bypass valve and
it seems that the bypass valve can get clogged and needs to be cleaned and
the spring lengthened to increase tension. Is there anyone else that has had
an issue similar to this where cleaning the bypass valve fixed the issue or
did they have to replace the fuel pump?

Luther,

Don't overlook the possibility that it is the boost protection switch,
mounted on the intake manifold. These will go bad and cut fuel just as you
describe but at only 6 or 7 psi instead of 14-15 psi. When the switch closes
it
interrupts the pressure signal to the ALDA and the engine gets fuel, the
equivalent of an unblown car, which feels fairly anemic

You can pull the wire from the switch to see if your problem goes away. Or
you can remove it and rig a test connection with your mitevac or air
compressor. Or a remote possibility is the turbo unloader valve is failing
and the
pressure is excessive.

Good luck,

doing 70 or so when I heard a bump and noticed the dash lights on and water
temp rising - knew a belt was gone so I switched off and coasted to a stop.

The AC belt was off its pulleys and laying on the engine bay - the
alt/water
pump/ crank belt was no where to be seen. I saw it a 1/4 mile down the
road

in 2 pieces! Anyway - couldn;t get the PS belt loose to remove so I cut it
and got my spare belt from the trunk - didn;t have proper wrnech to adjust
the alternator so the belt would fit so I managed to pry it on over the
main

pulley - it was a little loose but it got us home.

All new belts (the old ones were only about 5 years/30,000 miles old) and
now all is well - but it has emphasized the need to do a detailed check of
the belts more often than I did. I usually check things over about once a
month but since becoming disabled and no longer driving to work the 240D
was

being used less less I obviously wasn;t checking things often enough.

It always starts instantly (without block heater) in weather to the
teens - but it seems quieter now that it has new belts. Anyway - take a
few

minutes to examine your belts - it ain;t NO fun to work on the side of the
road! I feel *very* fortunate to have been able to wrestle the belt back
over the pulleys so we could get home without a tow. I've also updated my
tool kit to include wrenches needed to loosen retighten the alternator.
I

can easily get along with out AC and PS - but we ain;t going NO where
without the water pump. Oh yeah, I'm glad I had a razor to cut the PS
belt - made life easier -

Sincerely,
Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 78 240D - 287k)

yep, you are exactly right, its going to either be that or the tank
screen is plugging up. I am leaning more toward the overload valve
since the problem goes at goes. If the screen was plugging up it would
seem to me it would get worse and worse and finally not run at all
rather than it only doing it every once in a while.

When the switch closes it
interrupts the pressure signal to the ALDA and the engine gets fuel, the
equivalent of an unblown car, which feels fairly anemic

You can pull the wire from the switch to see if your problem goes away. Or
you can remove it and rig a test connection with your mitevac or air
compressor. Or a remote possibility is the turbo unloader valve is failing and the
pressure is excessive.

Good luck,

WOW! Cool car. I have always liked the old 250's. My first Mercedes was
a 1971 250. Mine had the 2.8 motor (I don't know the code) I think
halfway through the model year they switched over. It was a great car
over 400,000 miles when it finally crapped out. I had sold it to a
friend and he drove it for 3-4 years. He was on the highway and
something happened (I am guessing oil pump died suddenly). He said he
heard something lost all oil pressure and before he could get it shut
it, the engine was toast.

I loved that car. Mine was bright red, white/ivory interior. I always
liked the looks of the coupes. What year is this one?

The 123 was available with a column shifter and a bench seat. The 116
could also be had with a column shifter, but I'm not sure about the
bench (never seen one). I assume that all later column shift models

Tank vent is easy to check, just don't tighten the filler cap.

The 123 was available with a column shifter and a bench seat. The 116
could also be had with a column shifter, but I'm not sure about the
bench (never seen one). I assume that all later column shift models
were automatic, but don't hold me to that.

at cold start it's very rough and needs to have enough throttle to keep at
least 800-900 RPM to run somewhat smooth and not die.

Unlike when the wastegate opens to limit further boost and power, when
the overboost switch activates, power instantly drops about 30% (but the
engine should NOT stall - there should be sufficient fuel to allow the
engine to run at about 70% of full power). Check this by disconnecting
the electric line to the switchover valve of bypass the pressure line
thru the switchover valve (directly from the intake manifold to the
ALDA). Vacuum in the tank can choke off fuel/power and may even cause
the engine to stall, but simply opening (and then reclosing) the gas cap
and letting air rush in, restores fuel flow (at least for many miles).
This tends to happen unpredictably but usually only after you've been
driving for a while.

I have seen (in the boneyard) 115's with a column shifter and
the 'bench' seat. What it was was a small cushion (built just
like the regular seat bottoms) that sits in the tray, and in
conjunction with the rather generous armrest serves as a center
seat for small fry. In fact, I nabbed the interior from one
of these that was in pretty good shape. As the Frankenheap
has a column shifter as well as a floor shifter, and as boy-
racing is really pointless and stupid in a 200D anyhow, I've
toyed with the idea of restoring the column shifter so that
the extra seating would be available. Probably never happen,
though. I have the handle, but I'd probably end up fabricating
the linkages.

I cleaned the screen on my SD without making a mess. Run the tank down to
reserve and jack the right side up as high as possible, best with a
floorjack. The fuel will be at one side of the tank, leaving the hole where
the screen is dry. Takes the same socket as the fuel sender (47mm or

figured he might as well do them both because they were cheap and easy -
MB axles too)) and upgraded the read diff for more speed in 4th - MOPAR
guys make good diesel converts). With 9 diesel MB's (newest being 1985)
gracing the Church parking lot, Father Dean wants to sell his Toyota and
jump on the bandwagon.

   Any help is appreciated.

Speaking of belts, how long should they last roughly either in miles or years.
What is a good rule of thumb ?

Can't recall 126s, but on my 123 it only took .5L to do a full flush of the

Re: [MBZ] 240D Belt Problem

2006-01-31 Thread Potter, Tom E
It depends (don't you love that phrase). However, it does depend on a
lot of things. Assuming belts are properly installed, the environment
will be the major factor in the life span. Here in Houston (and I
suspect other major metropolitan areas), the ozone wrecks havoc on
rubber parts. Belts usually last me 1-2 years maximum (I change them
when I see them start cracking). Hoses are a bit longer, but wiper
blades last me less than a year.

Don't have a 124, but on all the others it's substantially the same:
you remove the tray itself (as for emptying) then remove the two

The total volume of power steering fluid in your 126 is 1.3 liters
(according to the '88 TDM). ABOUT half of that is in the reservoir and
the other half in the hoses and gearbox. 201/124s use less (about 1 liter).

I have an uncle who was a pro mechanic. He says that belts should last a
long time but you need to apply belt dressing to them periodically if you
expect them to do so. They get dried out and glazed but the belt dressing

amazing. Here are the prices:

I also do not know how he could guarantee these filters. What exactly
would that mean? For example, if you run into problems with your old motor
with 300K plus miles on it, how are you going to prove it was the fault of
the filter? You can talk oil analysis all you want but I would not think it
fair to pursue the vendor of the oil filter that you chose and installed. If
you don't like the idea, then do not use the new filter. However, we are
seeing more and more things come out of the far east that are a good or
better than many of the products that we used to produce in the west. It was
not always like that but it is becoming more so on a daily basis.

Any engineers on here with the facilities to do some testing? It would be
interesting to know if there is any difference in the oil based upon the
brand of filter being used. I have not been around here long enough to know
if y'all have been through this in depth but I know there has been
considerable discussion and some reasonable data on other forums relating to
various oil filter manufacturors.

I am sort of a believer that if I change the oil often enough, it likely is
not going to be a huge issue what brand of filter I use. I ran a 77 Ford and
then an 86 Ford over a hundred thousand with minimal wear using basic house
brand filters and oil. I changed both at 3000 mile intervals and never had
any issues (apart from headgaskets which is how I ended up having a look at
the cylinders etc.). If you plan to run expensive synthetic lubricants and
want to extend your change interval then you should either pay for a premium
filter (and hope you get what you pay for) or possibly, change the filter
mid cycle.

My 2 cents. Your mileage may vary etc.

Hendrik asked the tough question:

Question is, are you willing to risk your reputation with these cheap
filters. Just because they look similar does not mean that the quality is
the same. Personally I pay a little extra to get genuine filters.
Also are you willing to guarantee these filters?

I don't believe Rusty can be duped
He does this for a living. He's not going to fling out a piece of crap out
there for us.
He certainly can make more money selling us the filters we're used to
buying. Why would he risk invoking our collective ire?
