My wife is actually surprised that I would rather drive my 27 year old MB than her Infinity. Mine rides better, and I just plain love the car. She would never do well with mine as she is a somewhat aggressive driver who likes to shoot into the best available lane. Each of us has a car that works well for us. When I drive with my daughter, we have a game. When I see someone do something stupid I make a prediction of the driver's, uh, characteristics. She chastises me for being ---ist of some sort. Then when we get to where we can see the driver's characteristics, I am 90+% correct in my predictions. I then gloat, and she has to acknowledge begrudgingly that there might be some accuracy to my ---ist stereotyping. Try DHL. I just shipped two big heavy packages (61 and 46 lbs) for$26. UPS wanted around $45 and even Fedex was around $32. Better yet it got there the next day for ground shipping within Florida. Boy, don't I wish that I could believe the market is controlled by what the consumer wants. Unfortunately, I feel - no evidence - just feel, that the consumer wants what he/she is aware of/presented with. The radio was a fantastic thing until BW television made an appearance. Black and White television was absolutely wonderful until Color became available. VHS tapes were all the rage until DVDs became the consumer norm. With the Challenger single or two place they really need to be N numbered but do come in under the sportplane rules so no medical needed if you haven't failed one. The Hawk can also be open sided as the doors unzip and you can supposedly get a Hawk single under 245 to qualify for ultralight. If you are inclined to go that way. They still will want to fly around 45 or so. If you want to go really slow then you need to go to one of those MX type planes that I have heard can fly around at 25. Then again they only do a max of about 35-40 vs the Challenger and Hawk at supposedly 100 but I am a lot more comfortable at 70. Couldn't you just run the windshield defroster on hot and get the same thing. At least here in Florida mine will run the AC compressor at the same time to dry the air and then heat it before blowing it onto the windshield. Don't know if the AC compressor gets turned off when it gets real cold or not as it doesn't get real cold here. [MBZ] Seat Belt Q
Friends have an 01 (I think) E430 4Matic. It was rear ended hard enough to set off some sensor that locks the seat belts but then has to be replaced. This was a month ago and they still cannot drive the car because the dealer is still waiting for the part. They have been told it has to come from Germany. Anyone encounter this sort of thing? Seems odd that this part is so hard to come by. Can't help wondering if they could get it out of the US by overnight courier instead of waiting for some munchkins in Germany to produce it. I know the customer pays for shipping - hell, the customer pays for *everything* - but to think it costs the vendor nothing is incorrect. If the SH were a line item like everything else it would be easier to define and control - whenever a vendor offers Free shipping, it's true to say the customer pays, but the vendor also must pay a part. Actually to say the vendor pays is not accurate - actually it comes from his profit area. Also, with the internet it's possible to check prices cross a wide range of vendors - even though the parts are nopt comparable - so you might get a quote on a widget amplifier for $200 from Rusty and another quote for the same part name for $75. But you have no way of knowing that Rustys parts are made in Germany (likely by a Turk working on a production line ;-) and the other vendor is buying his parts from China made by who knows. So, while it looks like you are doing comparison shopping you are only going half way. There's no way of knowing the true quality until the parts is installed and works or doesn't work. If it works, fine - at least for a while, if not, I would bet Rusty is easier to deal with that some other people - especially eBayers who disappear frequently. So, while it says Free Shipping it is built into the price - which the customer pays but the vendor *has* to make money or he won't be around very long. Hopefully, the pricing is something like this - cost of part - $60, overhead (advertising, office space, phone, etc) $10, free shipping $5, profit $25 - total $100. If the SH increases as it does frequently the shipping cost might go to $10 and profit will go down to $20. Total price stays the same. Same thing happens when the rent or insurance goes up - profit goes down or price goes up. And with those websites featuring Chinese other parts offering split second pricing, it can be difficult for Rusty to raise his price everytime UPS raises theirs - also, Rusty matches other internet prices putting more pressure on him to keep prices down. Basic business stuff. If any of you ever want to open or run your own business you need to understand the basics. Otherwise the doors close pretty fast. I am pretty sure these belts use an explosive charge, in the winder,?to pre-tension the belts in a collision.? My guess is they are a one time use (like an airbag) and at least part of them must be repaced.? Demand may have exceeded availability. Jim in Phoenix Friends have an 01 (I think) E430 4Matic. It was rear ended hard enough to set off some sensor that locks the seat belts but then has to be replaced. This was a month ago and they still cannot drive the car because the dealer is still waiting for the part. They have been told it has to come from Germany. Anyone encounter this sort of thing? Seems odd that this part is so hard to come by. You might want to figure in to your equation that you can get early 90's E320 gas wagons in pristine condition for ~$2k. They will have all wheel drive too. I changed a transmission on a 2001 Jetta TDI. It was the job from hell. I much prefer working on Mercedes. You need a computer just to check the transmission fluid level. Also, as John R. pointed out, the driveability and feel are quite different. I would much rather take my W124 on a long trip than any VW---the seats are better and road noise is less despite 20-year-old door seals! I think your description of how it works if fairly exact. The impact triggers the charge that tightens the belts. Once released, they won't re-tension so the car cannot be driven unless one is prepared to go without the belts. Still surprised that these items wouldn't be on the shelf at the dealers since this sort of thing must happen regularly. The car is not damaged really beyond the back bumper and could be driven while they wait for the parts to fix that. It's because you are not supposed to say chinese -- Asian is the correct term. Funny story: My SIL tutors freshman football players at a large university. She is sorta mom to a lot of them, she has 4 boys of her own so these guys are just extended family in a lot of ways for her. Many of them have very little experience in social aspects (for instance, she helps them select clothes to wear to publicity events and such -- khakis and polo shirts are new territory for them). One of them (a very large young African American gentleman from a small town in some backwoods part of the state) comes to her one day all upset. He tells her he was riding the escalator somewhere and sees this Chinese dude coming the other way, so he asks him out of the blue, in passing, for some reason never made clear, How do you say 'ugly' in Chinese? So the football player says the guy looks at him funny and says, I don't know, I'm not Chinese. How do you say 'stupid' in African? . The football player was upset, He's a racist! He shouldn't be saying things like that! So then she, unsuccessfully, attempted to explain to this young gentleman why the whole thing was sorta racist and offensive, but he was not buying it. Leave it to How It's Made - one of my favorite shows. Besides reminding me today one of the reasons I don't eat meat, they are showing how a Rolls Royce is made. I didn't know that the hood ornament was retractable via a switch! I would absolutely enjoy having that on my Benzes! Not only would it be kept safe from vandals, it would really put me in the correct Mercedes mood every time I got ready to set out on the road. Flick - vrooop - up comes the Star! Price a set of rear SLS legs, or #22 head, or evaporator RR for the S124. My '96 Passat tdi was a rock-solid reliable, economical and fun to drive car. Much cheaper to keep than my Mercedes--damn, my Vanagon is even a helluva lot cheaper to run than the TD. I think I keep the Merc for purely sentimental reasons, at this point. Maybe the later models are more expensive... My W123 is hands-down the cheapest car I've ever owned, in cost-of-ownership terms. I do most of my own work and buy the parts from Rusty though. My '96 Passat tdi was a rock-solid reliable, economical and fun to drive car. Much cheaper to keep than my Mercedes--damn, my Vanagon is even a helluva lot cheaper to run than the TD. I think I keep the Merc for purely sentimental reasons, at this point. Maybe the later models are more expensive... My W123 is hands-down the cheapest car I've ever owned, in cost-of-ownership terms. I do most of my own work and buy the parts from Rusty though. I recently bought a Vanagon too, and I like it, but its engineering is cheap and amateurish compared to the W123 -- or even compared to my former W110. Having W123, W124, W201, and an A2 jetta, the jetta blows them all away in terms of how cheap it is to keep on the road. The W123 was a neglected car, so it's probably not a fair comparison. The W124 and S124 were far FAR more expensive than them all. Hate to admit it, but this list seems a great source for everything-savvy-folks. I've been fruitlessly job searching for some time now and I found an ad on Craigslist seeking a graphic artist. I go ahead and follow the link and it's a website called employee sources: http://employeesources.com/ Most of the listings seem to good to be true in terms of their requirements and compensation, and in terms of their enthusiasm. What do I have to lose? I apply. But in the app. process, questions are asked like what is my cel phone carrier, and how do I feel my credit is. And several opportunities are given to check boxes to request information to be sent to me on things like buying insurance and starting a business and improving my credit. I got a text message today - the day after applying - giving me a phone number to call regarding my application. I call and it simply tells me to log into the website and confirm my contact information, after which my app. will be further processed. Now this could be a legit headhunting type operation that happens to solicit the applicants. - or - The whole thing could be a scam to collect personal information. BTW nothing was asked in terms of my social or bank acct numbers or anything. They just have both our phone numbers now, so we'll be watching for telemarketing calls to begin on our cel phones. Hi Alex, I've had both a 2000 Jetta TDI and a 2004 Golf TDI . Much preferred the Golf. Bought it new in the east (cheaper there) and drove it across the country. In 2004 they got a bump in horsepower. That engine has about the same amount of torque as the VR6. My wife drove it 200 km a day five days a week and found it to be far more comfortable than either of my 300SDs. Plus with the five speed, you could out accelerate most vehicles away from the stop light. She still misses it. Another possibility, depending on where you live, is to get one with some rust. The rust drops the value of the car GREATLY, and if you're in an area where a rusty car won't really get worse, it's fine for a driver. My 85 190D was such a car, and was really a bargain for what it was. What got expensive on that car was rebuilding the suspension on it when it got close to 200k miles, followed by a busted ball joint in the front. Granted, I did most of the work myself, but there were a LOT of parts I had to replace on it while doing the job. It was a five speed, so it was worth the time and money, or so I told myself. I do still have the two 87s, one D that got sideswiped and one rusty TD that needs a head/head gasket, that I've been toying with letting go, but unless you're somewhat near Sacramento, CA, the logistics might be a little screwy. That's why I'm looking at a Jetta wagon TDI that's a few years old. The largest part of the depreciation is gone and it will be good for another ten years or so. By that time I'll have saved enough on fuel (over the Benz) to buy another one. I have an '82 Jetta that I bought brand new. At 300k+ the body and original engine are still good, though I had to replace the head at 80K because I burned the valves following the idiot upshift light (remember those?) . However, it was the electrics that consigned it to a moldering death in my yard. The electrics did get better in 83. I have an 83 Jetta Turbo diesel that still going strong. Well, I suppose comfort is a matter of taste... but I've found Mercedes seats to be more comfortable than any other car's by far, when in good shape (springs not sprung and padding not compressed). The problem is that you have to maintain them, like the rest of the car, and most people don't. VW-type seats, on the other hand (foam over a stiff metal bucket) are comfortable until the foam collapses, and then feel like a church pew---at which point they are basically not fixable unless the entire seat is rebuilt from scratch by a competent upholsterer. Most pain medication in these two disciplines is low cetane -- great for a sinus headache or a banged finger, but next to useless for neuropathy, chronic pain, disk disease or damage, etc. Phenocane is different. It works remarkably well. No fuzziness and no stomach upset, but by being a very effective inflammation reducer with a few other goodies, it either eliminates the pain or ratchets it back far enough to allow you to function. Ibuprophen and acetominophen have their own drawbacks, some serious and irreversable, especially in higher dosages. Since we're all subject to the bumps, bruises, and banged knuckles of taking care of our cars (and, as Tiny Tim said, God bless us every one for doing it!), I thought this might be a useful resource. I have no financial interest in the stuff -- in fact, I'm dabbling with reverse-engineering it, since I use so much of it! BTW, ignore the bottle directions -- if the pain is enough to really slow you down, take two caps instead of one, and two more if you don't notice a difference in 30 to 45 minutes. Remyelinization, of course, is the optimum solution, and there are promising and partially sucessful treatments out there for that, too. But while we pursue that ultimate solution, reducing PAIN! to a background noise allows us to move and do the things we want to do -- to get on with our lives, without being defined by our disabilities. Yes, the Golf/Jetta TDI gets good fuel economy BUT you'll realise that a 20-y/o MB is a BARGAIN the first time you pay $100 for a set of front brake pads for the VW, or when you replace the $300 MAF sensor for the 3rd or 4th time, or when it needs yet ANOTHER window lifter, or when it won't start because the intake manifold is clogged with soot, or when you get the bill from the chiropractor b/c the seats are HORRIBLE, or when the rear brake pads wear out AGAIN after only 20k miles, or when the coolant level sensor seal fails and coolant is pumped into your wiring harness destroying your entire electrical system, etc etc. Idiotically, I gave up my 1979 300TD for a new 2002 Golf TDI. Sounds like you got a lemon. Sold both my 2000 Jetta TDI and 2004 Golf TDI after a couple of years of ownership and no maintenance hassle for just slightly below what I paid for them new (exempting taxes). With my new 2000 Jetta, all maintenance was covered under the warranty. With the 2004 Golf, they charged (too much) for oil changes. Now that I'm not so busy with work, I'd do those myself. Fortunately, just as there are for M-Bs, third party Internet suppliers for VW really save you a bundle. I spend way more time on the 300SDs fiddling with them. The latest is the heater hose that the dealer wants $125 for. Fortunately the suppliers everyone on this list knows about has it for a small fraction of that. Going to have to remove some electronics on the '85 to get at that. The air condition compressor on the 83 is squealing. That's not going to be a lot of fun. Going to have to upgrade the AC to the newer environmental standards. Thanks to all for the interaction. Really helped clarify my next steps. Given the rising cost of fuel and the thousands of miles we put on in a month, a car that gets twice the fuel mileage and saves a thousand or more dollars a year is the way I have to go. Anyone interested in purchasing two west coast solid body 300SDs, one an 83 with a rebuilt engine and the other an 85 (w/ABS brakes)? The next question is what should I ask for them? [MBZ] W124 vent light?
Hey Everyone, The light on the centre air vent seems to be out on my car. Both vents on the right and left of the dash have back lights on the swivel part of the vent wheel, so I figure there's also one on the centre one? Ok, how do I get to it? :-) Also, should the knob for the headlights be back lit as well.
