[MBZ] Oil analysis problem
Sent oil samples from my 5 300D 's to the lab ( 3 x W123's , 1x 300GD ( OM617 ) and 1xW124 ) and got satisfatcory results from 3 off them . The one W123 ( the only one running Mobil 1 ) had high levels of Copper and Iron ( 29 and 71 ppm ) after 2000 km. Sodium, Siicon, Al , Cr , particulates, soot are all low . Lab suggested the oil pump is worn and I should test oil pressure . Well the oil pump had done only 6 km and oil pressures are good. The engine is loosing compression and oil consumption has increaseed since engine rebuild a few years ago so something is not right. Any ideas anyone? Am going to change oil to delo 400 and then see what the results are. Regarding the other car with poor results - I had just bought it - has been running on WVO for 3 km - well its oil had high levels of iron ( 93 ppm ) as well as particlates - diagonis by lab was that oil filter was being bypassed ie filter blocked. is this a problem with WVO ? Does the stuff get into the engine oil and block the filter? ROFLMAO! That is the ABSOLUTE greatest slam on the BIG 10 I've ever read. I LOVE IT! :) Keep up the good work Gary. Yet, every year, we are subjected to a championship game featuring one of these third rate midwestern frauds. And we will likely again, despite the obvious fact that no team in the Big Ten would get out of the SEC or Big 12 with less than 3 of 4 losses. What sway to this large midwestern land grant institutions have that they are given the right to defraud the American people like this year after year? [MBZ] Peter's 300GD
Peter, How do you like your 300GD? How would you rate it compared to domestic and foreign SUV's? Is it a grey-market truck? A model worth seeking out? Are they really worth prices north of $12,000? What kind of mileage to you get? Decent enough ride for a daily commuter, or really meant to be used like an off-road capable truck? I've always thought they were pretty cool, but they seem to command ridiculous prices. I've only seen one for sale locally a few years ago, rusty and very high mileage, and they wanted $15k for it, AND IT SOLD! Re: [MBZ] Oil analysis problem
The first results - the high iron copper and loosing compression tells me that your cylinder walls bearings are wearing at an accelerated rate. I believe that the analysis company is suggesting the oil pump as a possible cause but the cause could just as easily be a poor rebuild, improper break-in or running out of oil sometime in the engine's past. The second cause could be the same as the first or the waste oil may have come out of a deep fryer made of mild steel what's in the oil is from the engine's blow by. [MBZ] 190D diff update
Changed the oil in the diff on my 190D today. If you remember its howling, its gotten worse too... This is an easy job, 15 minutes the first time 10 thereafter. I put the car up on ramps, the 190D is hard to get under... My driveway is sloped slightly which probably caused me to not drain out all the oil. I only got a bit over a full quart (1.2 maybe) in before it started draining back out. The stuff that came out was filthy. I thought my Indy had changed it but now that I remember our conversation I think maybe he just checked it for level. He's an old school mechanic and I don't think he believes in Mobil 1. I should point out that I had to top up the engine oil while I was at it and the car is now consuming a quart in 5,000 miles which is well improved from a quart in 2,000 when I first converted to Mobil 1. Anyway I've got to go into Boston tonight, thats maybe 150 miles round trip. Will see if this makes any difference. As usual I don't expect a short term improvement (maybe since the old stuff was dirty) but will look for long term gains. I'll probably change again next week since I'm sure I didn't get it all out. Maybe turn the car around so the ass end is downhill. I had it uphill today as it rained yesterday but the ground had already dried by the garage. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Man that was simple! Rear Brakes 190D
Doesn't it make you feel good? When the time comes you'll be pleased how easy rotors are too. For the record the 17mm wrench in the $10 box end wrench set from Harbor Freight works a treat on a 240D. I've had 3 of 4 calipers off so far. The ones on my car were TIGHT (well Loctite...) and I beat on the wrench with a 3# hammer without breaking it... I've still got the fronts on my 240D laughing at me. Re: [MBZ] 190D diff update
Thats not a bad idea... I noticed today that I have 2 kinds of clear plastic fuel line, one is really clear, the other is tinted blue. A year after purchase the blue stuff is still supple and nice like when I bought it. The clear stuff has hardened and is stiff. It doesn't break easily but it doesn't really bend either... I'd be told back in the day the blue stuff was better, then the snowmobile shop started carrying only clear because of some availablity problems. Now I see that the blue really IS better... The sucker hose on the topsider is opaque clear (ie not tinted) and doesn't bend super well either but that was what it was like when I bought it. -Curt --- On Sun, 10/26/08, Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 190D diff update To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Date: Sunday, October 26, 2008, 11:51 AM Maybe turn the car around so the ass end is downhill. Re: [MBZ] W124 Timing Chain
From one of Marshall's posts -- John, The failures you are fearing are VERY rare (once it's established you don't have a defective - fast wearing timing chain that were installed in a small percentage of 92-94 Mercedes diesels) if you pay any attention to maintenance. Simply checking the chain is THE way to insure then chain is not worn to the point of needing replacement. Checking the chain stretch will immediately let you know if you are experiencing abnormal chain wear (should average less than 1 degree every 100kmi). Chain stretch rate is a funcion of lubrication and is inversely correlated to oil change interval and the quality of the oil. Injection pump filures are extremely rare unless you play with it! Of all of the 60x engine I know of only 3 or 4 have have failed (I know of a few more that have been BROKEN). Vacuum pump wear rate is also correlated with the quality and cleanliness of the oil. Better oil that's kept clean causes less wear - AND if the vacuum pump is changed every 150-200kmi, the chances of a pump failure is considerably less than 1%. Even if the vacuum pump should fail, fewer than 5% will suffer serious engine damage. THESE just are not frequent problems. I've attached the TSB on checking the chain (change the chain if the wear exceeds 4 degrees - TSB says 3, but that was related to checking during the warranty period) but it will be stripped from the list copy. [MBZ] Correct lube for plastic-to-plastic contact?
Sort of OT question but maybe not, considering. I took apart my Yamaha component CD changer because it refused to open---just a whining noise when you hit the open/close button. It's the kind with a carousel that slides out on runners like a kitchen drawer. I thought a CD might be somehow jammed inside and keeping the drawer from sliding out, but instead found that a tiny drive belt, running on pulleys to connect a motor to the rack-and-pinion arrangement that moves the drawer, was overstretched and slipping. I'm ready to order a replacement ($1.98 plus $8 shipping!), but I figured as long as I have the unit open, I should lubricate the runners and the rack-and-pinion setup. So the question is what kind of lubricant to use for these parts? There's some kind of white greasy stuff on there already, but I supppose I should clean it off (I have some 100% isopropyl alcohol already to clean the laser lens) and start over. Generally the rule is that grease manufactured from a synthetic base stock is safe for plastics, right? Can I just use ordinary FLAPS white lithium grease? Is there something special about the stuff sold specifically for electronics applications that justifies the outrageous price for such a small quantity? Re: [MBZ] Oil analysis problem
Some of the standard tests might help - leakdown test, compression test, etc might offer a clue. If those tests show a low cylinder *then* a teardown is last resort - IMHO. Hard starting when cold (the colder the better) will be the best test of the cylinder head / combustion system than anything else. A engine rebuilt that recently should behave like a new engine fresh from the MB dealer. Low oil pressure indicates a main bearing problem - when the engine is fully warmed up - and the oil is warmed also - the oil pressure should jump to the peg and be at 3 bar/45# or so before you are at 3000rpm- that's according to the manual - and probably covers high mileage engines also. On a rebuilt engine I'd expect to see it idle just below 2 bar (a little less than 30) when warm and go to 3 bar (45) as soon as the accel pedal is pushed. Rod bearings are tough to diagnose on a diesel - because of the noise alwys present - But the above might be a start - Sincerely, Larry T (74 911, 91 300D 2.5T) www.youroil.net Oil Analysis Kits Porsche Posters/Weber parts - Original Message - From: Curt Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com; Peter Merle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, October 26, 2008 1:27 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Oil analysis problem Interesting, the rebuild was 60,000 km ago? Hood Canal Brewery is only some 16 or 17 mi. from my house. I have enjoyed their beers before, but only recently found out they are so close. They have a very unassuming tasting room (which is actually a small bar where locals gather. very friendly bunch). Their website reflects the appearance of their facility, oh, and the labels on their bottles. Important thing though: All of their beers are quite nice and tasty. Recently, I drove down to Portland and spent three days riding a bicycle around and checking out their local breweries/public houses. Ive got to mention the Lucky Laborador. I hit both their locations. Though they dont brew their own ales, there is an outdoor seating area where you can bring your dog and let them play. Its like a dog park with beer. Oh, and there is bicycle parking *inside* the place. Gotta love Portland. More recently, I have been exploring what Seattle has to offer. It's clear the other side of the country from me, I'll just have to settle for the local (and semi-local) brews here in Charleston. [MBZ] Sorta OT, disposal of anti-freeze
I am replacing the water pump on the truck, drained the Deathcool, caught most of it. We live on the marsh, have a septic system, I am thinking it probably wouldn't be a good idea to put it down the septic? I can take it into town and pour it in a toilet to the sewer, or to the auto parts store if they collect it. Any thoughts on best disposal method? GM decided to thread the fan/clutch assembly onto the water pump shaft, no apparent way to get it off when on the truck, jammed a screwdriver in the impellers once I removed the whole deal and the back of the water pump, beat on an adj wrench on the big nut, finally got it loose. Re: [MBZ] Correct lube for plastic-to-plastic contact?
Might also want to try removing the grease with a toothpick, sometimes the grease itself degrades and gums up all-plastic gears. Plastic-to-plastic doesn't necessarily need extra lubrication, depending on what kind of plastics are involved, even though it can be beneficial for installation and the first few runs. Some sewing machine people - who have a similar problem - swear by Tri Flow grease, available at your local bicycle shop. The safety of using this is probably also related to the specific kinds of plastic involved, but by all accounts it is good stuff. -TC LubriPlate is often used by repair shops, though I havnt' tried to source it in a long time. Re: [MBZ] 126 brochure Becker radio - car radio with record feature
I had one of those back in the mid 1970's,installed in a '73 Chevy Caprice. IIRC from so long ago it was a Sanyo, and I think they quit making that model after a couple of years. It allowed you to record off the air or you could use the handheld microphone. I was never happy with the off the air quality, but the handheld mic did ok. Unfortunately the Caprice was a hardtop you could get into with a coat hanger almost as rapidly as with the key, and it was liberated a couple of months after I put it in. I saw the guy in the parking lot and he was followed home so we had his address, description of the car and plate number, his hair hanging off the rear view mirror and the tools he used to get in [campus police scared him while in the act] and all the Indianapolis police would do was send me a theft report [taken over the phone] for an insurance claim. I'm still ticked about that one. If you go searching for the Incra brand miter gauge you'll find a blip down the page that says something about Special Offers and Promotions. If you use this to add the gauge to your shopping cart, you'll also get an Incra jig (an invaluable tool, I think) for free. Nothing substantial, considering they're only about $15-$20 new, but with the free shipping the whole thing is a good deal compared to what you would pay for them separately. Re: [MBZ] Tax credits for Diesels
I questioned this report, based on the byline from Mumbai - but it seems to be accurate: (if it only applied to all our Diesels as well :-) http://www.kbb.com/KBB/green-cars/articles.aspx?BlogPostId=712r=24462669476751464 A trio of super-clean, 50-state BlueTEC Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles has become the latest to qualify for federal alternative-powertrain tax credits from the IRS. The 2009 ML320 BlueTEC will be eligible for up to a $900 maximum credit while the R320 BlueTEC merits up to $1,550 and the GL320 BlueTEC tops out at $1,800. Although those breaks will only be available on the first 60,000 units, an M-B spokesperson confirmed that the planned U.S. volumes for the three will not exceed that number next year. Since none of the three are set to arrive at dealers until October, neither pricing nor formal EPA numbers have been released. However, Mercedes indicated that each will carry a price premium of roughly $1,500 over its gasoline-engine counterpart, have fuel economy figures that are 20-30 percent greater and a cruising range in excess of 600 miles. Unlike the E320 CDI sedan, which does not meet the California emissions requirements, these new 50-state M-B diesel SUVs are equipped with Mercedes' AdBlue system that injects a precisely measured quantity of aqueous urea solution from an on-board reservoir into the exhaust that reduces nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen in a special catalytic converter. The AdBlue tank only needs to be refilled every 10,000 miles, which is done as part of the vehicle's routine maintenance. Last month, Volkswagen formally announced that its new 2009 Jetta TDI and SportWagen TDI models also would be eligible for a $1,300 tax break under the same federal alternative-powertrain legislation. Re: [MBZ] Correct lube for plastic-to-plastic contact?
I would use some of the white sunroof lube from Rusty. It's a very high quality lube that will not collect dust. Exactly what you would need for mechanical parts in side electronic equipment. (the only reason I would use it, is because I have some just lying around :) ) Luther Alex Chamberlain wrote: Sort of OT question but maybe not, considering. Using your own laptop you should be fine. Out at the old nuke plant, there are 5 dudes in the process of being 86-ed due to bypassing firewalls on company computers, getting out on to the internet and visiting verboten sites (beer brewing, guns, You Tube, etc). Re: [MBZ] new perks at my job
On break time? No, I cannot lie. This would be during regular work hours. I'm in a position where management is happy to see me not working (sort of like the Maytag man). When I work, I naturally spend money, which cuts into our profit. Could I do this on day shift? Probably not, and that is because the day shift usually has a much higher call volume. Tonight happens to be one of those nights that is very slow. My last call was 25 minutes ago, and we might have periods up to 1 hour without calls. Our supervisor (who works 8a-5p) has no problem if all calls and messages are handled in a timely manner, and all paperwork is completed. Everything else (legal, of course) is fair game.
