With 7000 lb on the axles, your tongue weight would be what, 700 lb?

A car can weigh something like 5000 lb?

That would allow 2700 lb for the trailer and all the gear ...

Had we stayed on the Calhan ranch, I would have bought a John Deere 4020
to upgrade from the Case VA with tricycle gear we had.

There was a big (government, IIRC) program back in the late '80 that was
kind of like the "Cash for Clunkers". Tractor prices went up considerably
because of that.

This is an industrial tractor, not a farm tractor. I think it is the
equivalent to a 3020, but built lower, with a heavier duty loader. It
looks like it has new paint and new tires. It is a bit pricey, and
should be yellow, not green. As long as it is not a pig in ladies gown,
it might be a good deal.

Re: [MBZ] What about this tractor 3020 loader

2018-02-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
We'd have to research the capacity of the loader model, but I think so.
Depends on the rear counterweight. I know the 4020 up and 966 IH up can
with the right loader. You probably only need 30-40 hp, but a good hyd.
pump, a large loader and counterweight. The mass of 70-1230 hp
tractors makes it easier to lift cars. With our little 240 IH and rear
forklift we could lift the front end of IH trucks. It was maybe 20 HP
and light.

2018-02-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
D@mn good tractor, except the hydrostatic scares me. I'd rather have a
clutch and gearshift as those seldom fail. At worst, you might need a
new clutch disk and pressure plate and throwout bearing. If the hydro
goes out, you are gonna spend big bucks or loose big bucks dumping the
tractor. I am not sure if it is heavy enough to lift whole cars. You
'd need to check that out.

It has had some things repaired, the PTO and one 3 pt arm are red, from
a farm tractor. (Neither good nor bad but does show some level of care.)

I'd like it better if it was a diesel, but for your use, a gasser may be
better. Simple ign, plugs and simple carb.

You could try (if the owner would let you) picking up a whole car that
is going to the crusher with the bucket and a couple log chains asross
the top of the car to the bucket or loader arms to keep the car more or
less horizontal. I'm thinking it will pick it up if you have enough
weight on the 3 point. You may want to replace front tires and wheels
with balloon tires 11L-15 or similar.

[MBZ] Breaks

2018-02-19 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
No good repair attempt goes unpunished.

I had yet to deal with the brake fluid on Allen. It has been a year since I
got her, and the fluid, though fresh when installed a few years ago, was not
being as good as I thought it should be. Stuff in the tank was a bit dark, but
i had done some fluid swaps with a baster twice.

I have a Mighty Vac, that the fluid cup had gone missing. I had rigged up a
container last year. When I tried to use it this morning, the thing just
shattered. Nalgene bottle with gooped in hoses. Just fell apart. I tried to
fab something else to work. It did not. Instead of screwing about trying to
get suck to work, I hit FLAPS and brought home a FRESH Mighty Vac. That makes
three pumps, lots of attachments, and one functional cup.

The car was jacked up and I was able to get the far rear wheel draining, but I
was sucking bubbles. Driver side rear did not have bubbles and both sides were
pulling fresh fluid from the reservoir. Rear rotors and pads looked good with
no obvious wear. Front rotors were showing almost 2mm. Front right bleeder
would not open, as somebody had rounded the 8mm nut. Driver side bled fine
with no bubbles. I think 10oz of DOT4 went through the lines.

Now I get to RTFM for the Vac pump and try to come to terms with what is going
on with my brake system. Right front wear sensor wires are rotted away. Looks
like I need to wait until another bunch of W126 hit the PnP yards so I can
scrounge a few brake parts.

Maintenance, repairs, storage. That was the part that really got me. Oh and for

I presume you have to force the smoke into the intake/induction system so
it comes out the leaks. That would mean having a good seal where you force

schedule the work.

Maybe the compromise would be getting a purpose-built thing to do the most
common tasks (probably move / tow vehicles around the ranch) and then rent
the equipment to do the other things that can be scheduled (bush-hog,
trench digging, grading, etc).

Sounds to me like a Unimog that you can use to tow / pull / push would be
the ticket? Find a rusty beat up example with no attachments but sound
engine / trans / brakes?

I presume you have to force the smoke into the intake/induction system so
it comes out the leaks. That would mean having a good seal where you force
the smoke in.

Pretty simple. This one uses a tiki torch wick. Someone he knows made one with
a glow plug for the heat source in the oil to make the smoke. At his work they
use one with nitrogen for anything related to the fuel system. He says fancier
ones have flow meters so one can gauge the rate of leakage and a timer to
control how long the heat stays on.

I'm not sure where "Coles Island, a Confederate post on the Stono River
 that was being dismantled"
was, but it was likely near my buddy's farm on the Stono River.  Oh, the
internets tell us "Much of Coles Island was destroyed in the hurricane
of 1911, leaving Fort Palmetto standing in the marsh just south of the
remnants of the island. The tall tabby walls are still extant, though
they have collapsed into the surrounding marsh"

So it isn't there any more I guess as the area changes with storms and
tides.  But yes Smalls was viewed by some as quite a hero.

Interestingly enough this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Isaac_Smith
happened at my buddy's farm, back when it was owned by his family
ancestors -- guys on shore got pissed at the men on the ship for firing
on some shacks they had over there by the river and fired back on it and
ultimately captured it after killing a bunchum.  The ship crew was just
harassing the guys and taking target practice on the shacks for no
particular reason.  Showed them.

I bought the pad from FCP Euro. Every pad I’ve ever purchased regardless of
supplier was designed to fit out of the box. I don’t ever recall having to trim
a hood pad.

As for glue removal, you just have to scrape until nothing comes off. Wipe it
down with adhesive remover or a solvent that will remove any remaining gunk or
grease/oil.
