as of right now it's either "paper thin walls" or "third planet"... i
guess it depends on the mood.

3.What are five records you couldn't live without?

an evil, evil, EVIL question:

* manRay19 - great lakes, great times
(an amazingly great local band. download stuff by them at
http://www.mp3.com/manray19 -- they're described as gympcore.
they have two bass players. they're going to move far away and

* the beach boys - smile
* the dead milkmen - metaphysical graffiti
* radiohead - the bends
* the pixies - surfer rosa & come on pilgrim (i have the import two

4. Putting records on the internet for free download: bad or good?

both. bad in the sense that most people are dishonest and won't
buy the album after hearing it. good in the sense that it saves me
from wasting my money -- if i download an album and it sucks, i
can just delete it. if it doesn't, i can buy it.

5. Ebay, bad or good?

the devil. it tempts you with it's sweet juices then poisons you with

6. Russ winning the hottest male contest, is he voting for himself or what?

8. First live show?

9. Worst live show?

3.What are five records you couldn't live without?

Out of my whole life...
Rodan - Rusty
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Sunny Day Real Estate - LP2
Radiohead - The Bends
Palace - Mountain EP

4. Putting records on the internet for free download:
bad or good?

Well, it's copyright infringement without the artists' permission, so I'd
have to say no, except in cases where it is not otherwise available.

5. Ebay, bad or good?

Good.

6. Russ winning the hottest male contest, is he
voting for himself or what?

I dunno. I don't care.

7. Do you own the Japaneese Tour EP?

MP3

8. First live show?

Pale Blue Star, Hedge at the Insomniacathon 1994 at Louisville (KY) Gardens.

9. Worst live show?

I've seen a million horrible, high school punk band nothing little shows.
It's hard to pick from those.

10. Favorite sound?

My girlfriend's voice

11. Least favorite sound?

Loud, obnoxious, drunk people

12. Girls posting their pictures and email addresses
on the internet bad/good?

It's up to them if they want to take that risk, probably not a good idea
though with all the psychos out there.

13. What book should every person in america read?

The Bible

14. Signing to a major bad/good?

Usually bad for bands that have a history as indie bands. I guess good if
you can hack it.

15. Wearing the t-shirt of the band you are going to
see?

I dunno, ask Gutter.

16. Modest Mouse list being oft-off the topic
bad/good?

It's cool with me when people have something semi-intelligent to say...I
really hate posts like "Right on, man!"

17. Favorite beer?

Grizzly.

18. Favorite color?

Commie Red

19. What are you going to name your first born child?

Kirk

20. Five favorite movies (the question that tells

Re: [MMouse]: PINBALL

2000-04-10 Thread Russ Sweetser

ho-hum. here the gat come

as for rating pinball (is anyone else a pinball fan around here? if you
arent , to paraphrase hamlet "GET THEE TO AN ARCADE". because i used to
think pinball sucked and then i played a few games and it rocks your
world)
the best known pinball game ever ever ever made
is GUNS AND ROSES PINBALL. you cant beat this fuckin game. put a quarter
in and it goes "YOU IN THE JUNGLE BABY". its got so many GNR references
in it. it makes me clean up a mess in my pants everytime. so yeah. GNR
gets my all time rockin pinball game.
whodunnit gets like a 7.5 out of ten. its way too easy. i mean hell i
put my 50 cents in and got 8 free games. what the hell kinda shit is
that. i dont really live around too many pinball games so its tough for
me to find the good ones. and they more often than not end up sucking.
another great pinball game used to be at TT the bears in cambridge mass
(behind the middle east). it was this boxing game that had a boxer in
the middle who would turn around everytime you got a chance to bout, and
you would whack him with the ball a certain nunmber of times in the
allotted time frame. if you kicked his ass you went up in the ranks,
much like mike tysons punch out (BANZAI! - piston honda). in the corners
you could jump rope your ball and use it as a punching bag. very very
innovative.

pinball games i hate include "black rose" and "medival madness". medival
madness is the only pinball game on campus, and its way too easy to lose
all three balls immediately. its one of those ones where youve got to
accumulate loop shots to get multiballs. and if you dont get the loops
or you dont hit the multiball switch, you aint got shit.
high speed is a good game too. as is Congo and South park. and i wont
even go into the star wars episode one game. it blew my mind when i
first played it.

shit man. now im jonesing.
russ - see my hearts reflection in your eyes

[MMouse]: PINBALL

2000-04-10 Thread Philip Smoker

Oh my god, I should quote The Who at the beginning of
this post...

RUXXMAN, I cannot handle the awe that is Whodunnit,
but show me an original PinBot and I'll teach you the
ways of the shiny table. I also mastered Demolition
Man (which is most likely head and shoulders above the
movie) during a frightfully long business trip in the
middle of goddamn nowhere, and the hotel only had two
pinball games, the one being located in the bar which
was closed in the middle of the night when yrs truly
was most likely to haunt the hallowed halls of the
silver ball. Let's see... I used to be decent at the
X-Files game, but the one I played had a faulty filing
cabinet, which made it extremely difficult to get
anywhere. The Shaq game was strangely addictive for
about a week, and the World Cup game was compelling
when drunk. Who wants to rate pinball games???

Re: surveys
I hate to be a bossy betty, but in six months this
whole cycle will repeat itself and many people will
repost new genetically altered surveys which will
cause another windfall of lengthy posts by friendly
listers. Perhaps someone should take it upon
themselves to catalog the results of this survey in
the interest of those later listers who have missed
Round One (Three? How many is this now, kids?).
I'm sure many of the eligible bachelors of this list
have already begun compiling stats and crunching
numbers, using the Hot Girls page as an answer key.

Frightening.

nobody has to know,

i saw us maple 6 times this summer. at first i didn't know what to think
but after the 4th show they grew on me. At the Seattle show this past
summer, Al, the lead singer kept harassing this odd looking mongol in the
front and jacked his hat. did anyone see this? i picked up their last
album 'talker' and i really dig it. the guys from Maple are really nice.
Al Johsnon works at a pawn shop. The other guitarist paints dogs for a
living. Aristocrats bring him their dogs and he paints portraits of them.
The bass player is a social worker. And the drummer writes all the songs,
every last note. I am full of useless info.

vampire slayer vs sabrina the teen witch?" i think this would be grrr-eat.
we could call it "indie-beat" or something like that. *sigh*

[MMouse]: US Maple / Modest Mouse Survey

2000-04-10 Thread tyler

U.S. Maple is great if you like extremely calculated very intellectual
rock music like Captain Beefheart, some Sonic Youth, etc. I think they're
greatmy cousin thinks they're the best band in America. I've been
dying to catch them live. I'm surprised they were "practically booed off
stage" in Chicago, their home town where they seem generally loved
Dunno, you're probably wrong, but yeah I think they're good.

Loud and shit. I like that at least.

1. Who are you/where do you reside/how old are you?

Tyler, from Cleveland, 18 years

2. What is your favorite mouse song?

Probably "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine." "Tundra/Desert" is really great,
too. Also, "Breakthrough" is a favorite. I really dig the chorus of
"Convenient Parking".

3. What are five records you couldn't live without (right now)?

R.E.M. _Murmur_
Wilco _Summerteeth_
Nick Drake _Pink Moon_
Spoon _Series of Sneaks_
Low _Curtain Hits the Cast_

I'm in a pop, qausi-folky mood I guess.

4. Putting records on the internet for free download: bad or good?

Hey, I'm all for people putting their own stuff up for free download. I
think it's immoral unless you have permission from the artist... That's
not to say that I don't do it, or disapprove of doing it.

5. Ebay, bad or good?

I've only bought one thing on Ebay ever...It worked out fine. I was
happy. So I guess it's good.

7. Do you own the Japaneese Tour EP?

Yes, I bought one from K.

8. First live show?

Hmm... the Beach Boys maybe? First "real" show was a festival with Moby,
Henry Rollins, Soul Coughing, Sloan, others. I still love the Beach Boys
though.

9. Worst live show?

Saw Wesley Willis here in Cleveland. I still think he's great, but the
crowd consisted of loud obnoxious frat-boys from Case Western Reserve
University. A really shitty art-punk band opened up I think called
Curmudgeon or something like that.

9a. Best live show?

Too many to choose from: Son Volt, Papa M w/ Six Parts Seven, Modest
Mouse in Seattle, the Melvins uhhdunno. I'm really psyched
about Jessica Bailiff, Thomas Brinkman, and Modest Mouse w/ Califone and
Six Parts Seven though...

10. Favorite sound?

Breathing is nice, I guess.

11. Least favorite sound?

Applause.

13. What book should everyone read?

I think that every artist should read Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist."
Other than that. not sure.

14. Signing to a major?

I doubt I ever would if offered the chance, but there are certainly
rewards.

15. Wearing the t-shirt of the band you are going to see?

Ah come on dude...don't be that guy.

16. Modest Mouse list being oft-off the topic bad/good?

Annoying at least... The Spoon mailing list for instance has a lot less
activity but a greater ratio of interesting posts to non-interesting
posts. People tend to get wax-intellectual here.

17. Favorite beer?

Heineken.

18. Favorite color?

Blue.

19. What are you going to name your first born child?

I'll get there later.

20. Five favorite movies?

Bottle Rocket
Down by Law
Beetlejuice
Can't Hardly Wait (it's brilliant...watch it again)
I really liked The Straight Story, Ghost Dog, and Being John Malkovich
this year

Modest Mouse - Interstate 8
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One4. Putting records

I've actually only checked it out once or twice, so I don't really

Well, besides many Bumbershoot attendances at a young age, I
think it was REM at the Gorge in like 9th grade or
something.

Rain.

11.  least favorite sound?

This annoying girl down the hall getting screwed and yelling REALLY

15. Wearing the t-shirt of the band you are going to

If it's a cool t-shirt, I think it's okay. But wearing YOUR bands

Wait? there's a topic?!! Fuck that -- unsubscribe me! I hate
topics being restricted.

17. Favorite beer?

movies. And I've seen so many good ones. These are just the Olde Stand-bys.

illinois wesleyan) and zach. i may just be assuming that though. im sure
all the chicagoans know each other, but my question is which of you
chicagoites are down (ie, who is attending the ted leo show on
wednesday?). this man rocks with the might of a full band and for those
who dont know, used to front the grossly underrated chisel. this will be
his final solo tour for awhile, for he is recording with his other band,
the pharmacists, and will be touring with them later this year. they
contain members of the make up, warmers, and the secret stars. oh yeah, go
to the show wednesday, you will not be dissappointed. i mean, anyone who
is down enough to write songs alluding to ulysses and portrait must be the
man. ted, i can assure you, is.

theres no way one can say that us maple is for everyone or not. theyre
totally an acquired taste, as is basically anything on skin graft
records. i thought it was funny that someone noted them as the worst band
theyd ever seen - thats basically what they strive for (to
oversimplify). you have to like weird shit and a general lack of
cohesiveness and melody to be into us maple. i think they rule

speaking of fucked up shitanyone here like like lake of dracula or

[MMouse]: Russ and Pacman

2000-04-10 Thread Darren Cloutier

Hey everyone,

Just a word of warning to all of you about to challenge Russ to a Ms. Pacman
competition. Russ and I are friends in real life, and last January the band
we are in, The Princeton Reverbs Colonial, went on a road trip to record our
new CD in Athens, GA. Along the way we stopped in Wilmington, NC to play a
show. Well at this club (Bessie's) they had an old skool Ms. Pacman set up.
Russ and I being the cool kids we are decided to play a round or two against
each other. We each put in our quarters and Russ got the two player game
set up. Russ was player onebig mistake. Russ said something like it'll
be a while you can go do something else. I laughed him off, but he was not
kidding. Each one of his lives literally lasted 20 minutes. My turn would
come up for like 30 seconds and then I would go read a book, play pool, take
a crap, do soundcheck, watch all three godfathers, and then come back just
in time to see him play for a bit before he made a mistake. It was awesome
:D. This pacman was hacked too or something cause you could go in the
ghosthouse. BOOYEAH, YOU'RE IN MY FIGHT CLUB NOW BLINKY!

yeah dawg,
Darren

I kind of get turned off by band shirts in
general. Seems kind of groupie-ish. Not a big deal,
though. I don't really care for any shirts with logos

All this talk of Coupland makes me wonder...
Has anyone read his new book? I picked it up a few
weeks ago because I simply buy everything he writes
despite the recent downward trend in his writing, but
I haven't even cracked it open yet. Has anyone made
it through that one yet? I was flying through
Girlfriend in a Coma at first, and I hit that
resolution that began near the last 30 pages and just
said, "Well, if this gets anymore predictable, I'll
just write the sequel myself." Has he lost his touch?
And when is David Foster Wallace putting out a new
one? I read his McCain story in Rolling Stone,
thoroughly entertaining. I need to read more books.

2000-04-10 Thread Dave Edwards

I got this copy of the Moon & Antartica from a friend who's roommate got it from Isaac
awhile back. It sounds really different from standard mouse stuff. At first it kind of
turned me off, but i'm warming up to it. I think this is a really early cut of the
album. The track list is different than the ones that have been posted so far. Lots of
vocal tracks on most of the songs, including some stuff i cringed at. Over all, it's
much less "groovy", more layered and complex, more up-front vocals, and alot less
bass. It's much more "epic" (bad pun totally intended) The new songs sound much
different from the live versions i've heard. I'm hoping the actual realese sounds
better.

Songs on my version:
1) Third Planet
2)Gravity Rides Everything (ilove this song)
3)Life Like Weeds
4)?
5)Dark Center of the Universe (not the best version)
6)Perfect Disguise
7)?
8)Stars are Projectors (damn good version)
9)Paper Thin Walls
10)Lives
11)Cities Made of Ashes
12)I came as a Rat (a bad title for a bad song)
13)?
14)Different City
15)The Cold Part
16)Alone Down There (cheesy/creepy voice effects)
17)Suspention of Disbelief?(Everywhere)

I could use some help with the titles i don't know...
Song four-"You're the good things, yeah, thats you, yeah that's you, yeah, you're the
icing on the cake on the table at my wake"

Song seven-"And down at the bottom of the ocean where the dead do rise" "You need
proof, I got proof..."

Song 13-(back country porch sound) repeats the "Never die, never grow old" line from
"i came as a rat" -isn't that a tom petty lyric?-

Song 17- i'm calling it "suspention of disbelief, but thats my own title. "everywhere,
everywhere, everywhere..."

any help out there?

-dave
"if you could be anything you want, i'd bet you'd be dissapointed, am i right?"
