PESO -- On the lighter side.
Various organizations spend a lot of money to build stands in marsh environments for Osprey to nest in, this one had other ideas... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20ontheligherside.html Notes: My major peeve about the K20D is it's tendency to seriously underexpose when photographing almost anything against a bright background. Re: Happy Birthday
To leagally work in the US you /must/ have an SS number or equivelent. If the illegal employee has presented a valid SS number that's identity theft to start. As far as I know the employers aren't required to do any more than report that they saw the proper ID and make copies of the documents for the employee file. The problem isn't unrestricted immigration, it's unrestricted immigration and a welfare state, You can have one, or the other, You cannot have both, at least not for long. Re: OT - Hard Disk Oddity
I had 5 of these 500 gb My Books drives and they generally worked well. One drive failed and took it to a local shop and they pulled the drive and put it in a generic enclosure - worked fine with no problems. The generic enclosure didn't cost more than $25 IIRC. So - you might want to just back up the flaky drive and have it put in a new enclosure. If it still has problems then the drive itself is flaky and you may as well just get rid of it or relegate it to just data transfers or something. Otherwise, like mine, it may work fine. I have since upgraded to a couple of 3TB drives and 2 of the 500 GB drives to have two copies of everything - and I drop off one set of thethe drives at a local computer shop that has their own data center every few months to archive everything remotely. The remaining My Books are not getting much use - they join the 200 gb drives etc that are big enough to be useful to too small to be valuable... Very blue, and there were two others that were identical. There were also white, red and green vintage police cars displayed at Classic Car Night that evening. Re: Like Derby, I've Been Blurbed Again
A noteworthy accomplishment and the book is a fine way to commemorate it. Nicely done. (I also enjoyed going through your cross-country book.) I do have one complaint though. Meg put together a scrapbook of sorts of photos of her and her five roommates from college and the many reunions they have had in the last 40+ years. We submitted it to Blurb on Tuesday a.m., June 28, and didn't receive our FedEx delivery from Seattle until today, Wednesday July 6. How is it that you got faster service? A more serious comment on Blurb: Meg has another roommate reunion coming up next week, she wants to take the book with her, and it took us longer to get the book together than originally planned. So we ordered six copies at once rather than just the recommended first proof copy. No problems. Good binding, good printing. stan On Jul 6, 2011, at 7:01 PM, Brian Walters wrote: > G'day all > > As I mentioned in my reply to Derby's recent post, Blurbing can be > addictive! > > Having recently turned over 100 acceptances to the PPG, I thought it > would be nice to have those in print. Re: Like Derby, I've Been Blurbed Again
I think it is pretty damn stunning - beautifully paired and laid out... Some very handsome shots I haven't seen before and others that I've seen quite often. (Having all three annuals , of course!) As we discussed off list, one gets tired of ones favorites sometimes and look at some with a jaundiced eye, but what is particularly nice was that your "theme" allows for variety. Much like one limited by the amount of time spent on one place.. as opposed to subject matter such as beaches, dogs, planes or plains, trains, autos, etc. I like it. ann On 7/6/2011 19:01, Brian Walters wrote: G'day all As I mentioned in my reply to Derby's recent post, Blurbing can be addictive! Meet frank
Here he is. http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/frank1.jpg A shot taken with Frank. f2, perhaps slightly overexposed. http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/berry.jpg The center. http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/center.jpg This was pretty simple because the Minolta mount on this lens was in 2 pieces. Behind the camera mount is another support ring. Both the ring and the K mount had a rib which had to be milled off. Even so, the ring does need to be another 1mm thinner for infinity focus. Minolta used 8 screws on the lens mount. 4 attached the mount to the support ring and 4 went through the support ring to the lens body. I left out the holes for the 4 into the ring and just used the 4 longer ones that went through to the lens body. That's enough for this weight of lens. It might be easier to have a pro with a mill do the actual work on the mount and ring. Perhaps I will hire an engineer to finish it. Also, put a hold for the mounting screw near the red dot. That allowed me to attach to the lens body close to the center of the aperture scale for near-proper alignment. Still, it "works" for close stuff. RE: Happy Birthday
Illegal, not legal, immigration does create problems for themselves and others when employers hire them - skewing the playing field, loss of tax revenue and exploitation. (and, hard work is one thing, killing yourself out of desperation is quite another) As far as expatriating money, for example, the vast majority of Mexico's hard currency comes from PEMEX and expats (not in that order) - not all of them "illegals", very important to keep in mind. I usually just carry the old 6x7 (2,718 dings and still going strong) with two lenses and Super as a backup... Norm -Original Message- From: frank theriault I agree with you. I always travel light, bringing the minimum amount of equipment for the conditions I expect to encounter - usually just one body and a maximum of two (rarely three) lenses. Re: A few words about the love of Good Equipment...
I'll have to get back to you on this--hoping to shoot some film this week :-) Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: "Darren Addy" To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2011 12:02 PM Subject: A few words about the love of Good Equipment... If you will indulge me... With all of the emphasis these days on digital and "Image Quality", it seems that many have forgotten (if they ever even lived at a time when they could KNOW it) what a satisfyingly tactile experience photography was. We have been robbed of much of that tactile experience by our automatic and autofocus digital cameras today. We don't get the satisfying "pop" of the back when we would load or unload film. We've lost the satisfying tactile experience of advancing the film lever and cocking the shutter, or the act of rewinding the 35mm film into it's canister. Now few of us want to "chuck" our plastic-bodied, autofocus lenses and digital cameras and go back to film - at least on a regular basis. But we can recapture some of that feeling by putting some vintage glass on our Pentax DSLRs. In my opinion, a m42 to K-mount adapter (that allows infinity focus) is one of the truly "must have" accessories. My personal preference is for the genuine Pentax brands that require no tools to remove. As most of us know, this opens up the world of m42 Takumar glass to you and your Pentax DSLR. I'm especially thinking of this recently, as I obtained a beautiful black Spotmatic and had it CLA'd by Eric. It feels so great in my hands. I just received an equally gorgeous S-M-C Takumar 135mm f2.5 for it, with caps hood and case. What a beautiful piece of kit that is! Along with it I got a very nice chrome Spotmatic F (my first F) with SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 and S-M-C 35mm f3.5 - all looking as if they were rarely used. There is a feeling I get when handling this equipment that is missing when I pick up my plastic-bodied Pentax-F autofocus lenses and that I have the feeling would be missing even if I owned the new Pentax Limited lenses. The heft of the lens. The buttery smoothness of the focusing action. The all-metal screw-in lens hood with white lettering imprinted around the end. Certainly that tactile experience has very little to do with producing excellent images - but that feeling is an aspect of photography that I originally fell in love with and that I feel again as I handle them now. The closest I can come to that feeling is shooting my DSLR with those superb Takumar lenses on it, and in keeping a film body along for those occasions when I want to recapture that feeling in total. The ability to use this quality glass (easily) is one of the main reasons that I originally went with Pentax for my first DSLR (even though I owned no Pentax glass at the time). After last night's dinner & movie with Darrel, I ended up in emergency with chest pains. EKG good with some slight anomalies, but nothing life threatening, though I will have to go for a stress test next week. Arms all black and blue from blood tests all night long. I'm so tired, I'll be off to bed in a minute. Had a good long chat with my regular doctor who came in to see me this morning before he signed my release papers--the gist--probably time to stop taking the body for granted. Cheers, Christine http://aguilapaw.posterous.com/ Nice pic Christine. ER's are most unpleasant places at any time of night or day. Get back on track and get well! Thanks, Cotty! And will do!
