PESO -- On the lighter side.

2011-07-06 Thread P. J. Alling
Various organizations spend a lot of money to build stands in marsh
environments for Osprey to nest in, this one had other ideas...

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20ontheligherside.html

Notes: My major peeve about the K20D is it's tendency to seriously
underexpose when photographing almost anything against a bright
background. In this case I dialed in 1 1/3 stops of extra exposure and
I still had to really push to get any detail at all in the bird it's
nest and the field lights.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

To leagally work in the US you /must/ have an SS number or equivelent.
If the illegal employee has presented a valid SS number that's identity
theft to start. As far as I know the employers aren't required to do
any more than report that they saw the proper ID and make copies of the
documents for the employee file.

The problem isn't unrestricted immigration, it's unrestricted
immigration and a welfare state, You can have one, or the other, You
cannot have both, at least not for long.

The short form is that if you post something to google+, they get to
do what they want with it, without paying you.

I haven't looked into the google+ photo sharing at any depth yet.
I've got an account and have poked around a bit. The biggest
advantages seem to be the user interface for sorting friends into

You of course meant to say if you want to halt illegal immigration. No one
wants to halt immigration when it's done by the book. But wide-open flood

That's just one of the things lost with autofocus

Re: OT - Hard Disk Oddity

2011-07-06 Thread Mark Cassino
I had 5 of these 500 gb My Books drives and they generally worked well. One
drive failed and took it to a local shop and they pulled the drive and put it
in
a generic enclosure - worked fine with no problems. The generic enclosure
didn't
cost more than $25 IIRC. So - you might want to just back up the flaky drive
and
have it put in a new enclosure. If it still has problems then the drive itself
is flaky and you may as well just get rid of it or relegate it to just data
transfers or something. Otherwise, like mine, it may work fine.

I have since upgraded to a couple of 3TB drives and 2 of the 500 GB drives to
have two copies of everything - and I drop off one set of thethe drives at a
local computer shop that has their own data center every few months to archive
everything remotely.

The remaining My Books are not getting much use - they join the 200 gb drives
etc that are big enough to be useful to too small to be valuable...

Good luck- --

Thanks, Christine and Brian!

I have never seen that Britcom, although I like Atkins' work. He is so subtle.

These cars are the NYPD police cars I remember from when I was young.
There were also some of the more iconic black police cruisers at thes
classic car night as well. And Red, and white and even green.

Thanks for your kind comments as well, Brian and Christine.

Very blue, and there were two others that were identical. There were
also white, red and green vintage police cars displayed at Classic Car

but it is the one that became #66 in my Pentax Gallery,

Re: Like Derby, I've Been Blurbed Again

2011-07-06 Thread Stan Halpin
A noteworthy accomplishment and the book is a fine way to commemorate it.
Nicely done. (I also enjoyed going through your cross-country book.)
I do have one complaint though. Meg put together a scrapbook of sorts of photos
of her and her five roommates from college and the many reunions they have had
in the last 40+ years. We submitted it to Blurb on Tuesday a.m., June 28, and
didn't receive our FedEx delivery from Seattle until today, Wednesday July 6.
How is it that you got faster service?

A more serious comment on Blurb: Meg has another roommate reunion coming up
next week, she wants to take the book with her, and it took us longer to get
the book together than originally planned. So we ordered six copies at once
rather than just the recommended first proof copy. No problems. Good binding,
good printing.

addictive!

Having recently turned over 100 acceptances to the PPG, I thought it
would be nice to have those in print. Hence "One Hundred Photos":

http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2284776

I'm under no illusions about the quality of the photos - there are
plenty of others on this list who are far more innovative than I. In
fact, I'm no longer all that fond of some of the accepted photos but,
damn it, they might be cliches but they're my cliches.

Anyway, the printing quality and colour accuracy is spot for all but a
couple of the images. Blurb's Book Smart software is a bit clunky but
you can work around its limitations. It might not be possible to
produce the professional layout that Mark achieved with the 2011 PDML
Annual using In Design, but Book Smart can still produce an attractive
looking product.

I continue to be impressed by Blurb, not just for the printing but the
overall speed and efficiency of the operation. I uploaded on Tuesday
night June 28 and FedEx arrived on my doorstep with the finished product
on Tuesday morning 5 July - six and a half days and that included a

Terrific job, Brian. As Ann said, great pairings and layout. Little
touches like your short ruled line between image and caption; simple,
clean design. I like your image index at the back, eg rather than
cluttering up the images with extra text.

Of course there's the images. Well, I'd have to shoot 24x7 for the next
decade to start coming up with work like this. Damn, I don't think I

That's just great. I don't think the slight overexposure on the

Re: Like Derby, I've Been Blurbed Again

2011-07-06 Thread Ann Sanfedele

I think it is pretty damn stunning - beautifully paired and laid out...
Some very handsome shots I haven't seen before and others that I've seen
quite often. (Having all three annuals , of course!)

As we discussed off list, one gets tired of ones favorites sometimes and
look at some with a jaundiced eye, but what is particularly nice was
that your "theme" allows for variety. Much like one limited by the
amount of time spent on one place.. as opposed to subject matter such as

beaches, dogs, planes or plains, trains, autos, etc.

I like it.

ann

On 7/6/2011 19:01, Brian Walters wrote:

G'day all

As I mentioned in my reply to Derby's recent post, Blurbing can be

I uploaded on Tuesday
night June 28 and FedEx arrived on my doorstep with the finished product
on Tuesday morning 5 July - six and a half days and that included a
public holiday in the US. The delivery started in Seattle and proceeded
via Oakland and Honolulu on it's way downunder.

Now - what can I get printed next

That's interesting. I never even considered a firmware upgrade. I'll
check out the WD website.

I'll also follow up John's suggestion re the power supply. WD seems to
have problems with power supplies that aren't restricted to 'My Book'.
I had a WD 'Essentials' drive (the one that died suddenly a few weeks
back). I went through two powers supplies on that one, one of which was
replaced under warranty. Checking on line I found that the problem was
anything but uncommon.

Like Derby, I've Been Blurbed Again

2011-07-06 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

As I mentioned in my reply to Derby's recent post, Blurbing can be

I uploaded on Tuesday
night June 28 and FedEx arrived on my doorstep with the finished product
on Tuesday morning 5 July - six and a half days and that included a
public holiday in the US. The delivery started in Seattle and proceeded
via Oakland and Honolulu on it's way downunder.

Now - what can I get printed next

Cheers

Brian

Interesting work.

That reminds me that I once fitted a Konica Hexanon 55 mm macro lens to
K mount. The interesting thing was that I didn't need to modify
anything. For some reason, the lens attached directly to a no-name
K-mount extension tube, probably because of slack manufacturing
tolerances on the tube. The lens wouldn't mount directly to the Pentax
body.

No infinity focus, of course, but that's not all that important with a
macro lens. Here's a photo:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1370864/Hexanon-Pentax.jpg

I don't use this combination much because my 90 mm Tamron macro is more
convenient .

There were thousands upon thousands of these all over the park by the lake
this past weekend. From afar they just look like purple-winged moths, about
and inch or two long. It's only when you get closer up that you see their
orange heads and iridescent abdomens (I think that's the abdomen - below the
head). They spend most of their time in the air, and if they're perched
they will flit off once you get closer than about 2 or 3 feet, so I didn't
get as many good shots as I'd have liked. This one was one of the better
ones:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/moth.html

Hope you enjoy. The insect-catching birds certainly enjoyed; they were
having a field day!

Comments welcome.

A shot taken with Frank. f2, perhaps slightly overexposed.

The center.
http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/center.jpg

This was pretty simple because the Minolta mount on this lens was in 2
pieces. Behind the camera mount is another support ring.
Both the ring and the K mount had a rib which had to be milled off.
Even so, the ring does need to be another 1mm thinner for infinity focus.

Minolta used 8 screws on the lens mount. 4 attached the mount to the
support ring and 4 went through the support ring to the lens body.
I left out the holes for the 4 into the ring and just used the 4 longer ones
that went through to the lens body. That's enough for this weight of lens.
It might be easier to have a pro with a mill do the actual work on the mount
and ring. Perhaps I will hire an engineer to finish it.

Also, put a hold for the mounting screw near the red dot. That allowed me
to attach to the lens body close to the center of the aperture scale for
near-proper alignment.

Still, it "works" for close stuff.

Yes - typical Atkinson blend of sarcastic and sardonic humour. Just the
sort of thing I like!

The series lasted only 2 series, I think. I have the DVD somewhere -
about time I dug it out and watched again.

Good shot, by the way, Dan. Brings back memories of the old 'Highway

And, to be fair, their goal is not to become a professional photography site.
Their goal, I assume, is to set up a social networking site that makes money,
and/or supports other services that enhances their ability to make money. Of
course anything any lawyer writes is going to do the best job that they can to
say "we get everything, you keep nothing".

Also, there is undoubtably a huge bookkeeping nightmare to keeping track of the
source of any images that they might want to use for any other purpose, or that
anyone else clips or copies.

I love when bloggers put up these scare tactic articles then wash

To be fair (for a few milliseconds) a large part of that ToS is, of
course, to enable them to store your uploaded images and to enable them
to be seen by whoever you intended to share them with. Clearly they
need to be able to "transmit" the data to accomplish this and "modify"
would typically be to resize them for thumbnails and recompress them
like Facebook does now.

However, the lack of a phrase like "we will give up any of these rights
when you remove the content" (like Flickr has) means they are doing the
Facebook thing and are therefore just as useless for a photographer to
use in any professional capacity.

So maybe this will become Facebook 2.0 with all its present limitations
and intellectual property rights and privacy concerns.

Meet frank

2011-07-06 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Here he is.
http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/frank1.jpg

A shot taken with Frank. f2, perhaps slightly overexposed.
http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/berry.jpg

The center.
http://brendemuehl.net/images/frank/center.jpg

This was pretty simple because the Minolta mount on this lens was in 2
pieces. Behind the camera mount is another support ring.
Both the ring and the K mount had a rib which had to be milled off.
Even so, the ring does need to be another 1mm thinner for infinity focus.

Minolta used 8 screws on the lens mount. 4 attached the mount to the
support ring and 4 went through the support ring to the lens body.
I left out the holes for the 4 into the ring and just used the 4 longer
ones that went through to the lens body. That's enough for this weight
of lens. It might be easier to have a pro with a mill do the actual
work on the mount and ring. Perhaps I will hire an engineer to finish it.

Also, put a hold for the mounting screw near the red dot. That allowed
me to attach to the lens body close to the center of the aperture scale
for near-proper alignment.

Still, it "works" for close stuff.

Sincerely,

Collin Brendemuehl

Makes the good point about "read the fine print before you sign up, or post

The short form is that if you post something to google+, they get to do what
they want with it, without paying you.

I haven't looked into the google+ photo sharing at any depth yet. I've got an

The high-grade and super-high-grade Olympus SLR lenses are like that
too. Solid feel, smooth in operation, rugged and precise.
Weather-sealed too. The high-grade lenses start at around $500 or so,
the super-high-grade around $1300. The all-mechanical helicoid
focusing mount in the Zeiss, Voigtländer and Leica manual focus lenses
feel even better if you prefer manual focusing.

That's nice, Frank. Nice angle on the moth and composed nicely with the

There were thousands upon thousands of these all over the park by the
lake this past weekend. From afar they just look like purple-winged
moths, about and inch or two long. It's only when you get closer up
that you see their orange heads and iridescent abdomens (I think
that's the abdomen - below the head). They spend most of their time
in the air, and if they're perched they will flit off once you get
closer than about 2 or 3 feet, so I didn't get as many good shots as
I'd have liked. This one was one of the better ones:

Hope you enjoy. The insect-catching birds certainly enjoyed; they
were having a field day!

Comments welcome.

It's beautifully printed and framed. I really like the subtly matte glass

RE: Happy Birthday

2011-07-06 Thread Norm Baugher
Illegal, not legal, immigration does create problems for themselves and
others when employers hire them - skewing the playing field, loss of tax
revenue and exploitation. (and, hard work is one thing, killing yourself out
of desperation is quite another)
As far as expatriating money, for example, the vast majority of Mexico's
hard currency comes from PEMEX and expats (not in that order) - not all of
them "illegals", very important to keep in mind.

I hired someone to do some repairs on the property. Over the course of the

happy with my Pentax body - I don't need 8fps. All I really want is a
high-quality 400mm auto-focus prime. Is that asking too much?

If you will indulge me...

With all of the emphasis these days on digital and "Image Quality", it
seems that many have forgotten (if they ever even lived at a time when
they could KNOW it) what a satisfyingly tactile experience photography
was. We have been robbed of much of that tactile experience by our
automatic and autofocus digital cameras today. We don't get the
satisfying "pop" of the back when we would load or unload film. We've
lost the satisfying tactile experience of advancing the film lever and
cocking the shutter, or the act of rewinding the 35mm film into it's
canister.

Now few of us want to "chuck" our plastic-bodied, autofocus lenses and
digital cameras and go back to film - at least on a regular basis. But
we can recapture some of that feeling by putting some vintage glass on
our Pentax DSLRs. In my opinion, a m42 to K-mount adapter (that allows
infinity focus) is one of the truly "must have" accessories. My
personal preference is for the genuine Pentax brands that require no
tools to remove. As most of us know, this opens up the world of m42
Takumar glass to you and your Pentax DSLR.

I'm especially thinking of this recently, as I obtained a beautiful
black Spotmatic and had it CLA'd by Eric. It feels so great in my
hands. I just received an equally gorgeous S-M-C Takumar 135mm f2.5
for it, with caps hood and case. What a beautiful piece of kit that
is! Along with it I got a very nice chrome Spotmatic F (my first F)
with SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 and S-M-C 35mm f3.5 - all looking as if
they were rarely used. There is a feeling I get when handling this
equipment that is missing when I pick up my plastic-bodied Pentax-F
autofocus lenses and that I have the feeling would be missing even if
I owned the new Pentax Limited lenses. The heft of the lens. The
buttery smoothness of the focusing action. The all-metal screw-in lens
hood with white lettering imprinted around the end. Certainly that
tactile experience has very little to do with producing excellent
images - but that feeling is an aspect of photography that I
originally fell in love with and that I feel again as I handle them
now.

The closest I can come to that feeling is shooting my DSLR with those
superb Takumar lenses on it, and in keeping a film body along for
those occasions when I want to recapture that feeling in total. The
ability to use this quality glass (easily) is one of the main reasons
that I originally went with Pentax for my first DSLR (even though I
owned no Pentax glass at the time).

On 3/7/11, Christine Aguila, discombobulated, unleashed:

I was hoping to replace this shot with something from a planned photowalk
for today, but that got cancelled. After last night's dinner & movie with
Darrel, I ended up in emergency with chest pains. EKG good with some
slight

anomalies, but nothing life threatening, though I will have to go for a
stress test next week. Arms all black and blue from blood tests all night
long. I'm so tired, I'll be off to bed in a minute. Had a good long chat
with my regular doctor who came in to see me this morning before he signed
my release papers--the gist--probably time to stop taking the body for
granted. Cheers, Christine

Nice pic Christine.

ER's are most unpleasant places at any time of night or day. Get back on
track and get well!

Thanks, Cotty! And will do! Cheers, Christine

Take care of yourself Christine and make sure you get better properly
before dashing around the place again.

Also, don't get yourself sent to this place:
