Re: File storage on the same card with two Pentax cameras

2012-11-29 Thread Joseph McAllister
If you put a card formatted in the K-7 into a K-5, it is renamed "K-5" if you
use it at all. The K-7 doesn't have the ability to maintain the SD Card name.
It looks like you can, but once you pop it in the K-7 and use it, it's back to
"SD Card".

Might be a workaround for that, but I'm not aware of one.

This is much the same as what I was experiencing with the Panasonic
G1, followed by the Ricoh GXR-M, and led me back to the Leicas. The
tactile responsiveness of focus, aperture and shutter release, the
sense that I'm the one in control. It's a joy.

I still have my Olympus E-1 and my Nikon F, but I've barely made a
dozen exposures with them all year. My other cameras are proving much
more satisfying to use for the present.

Such it is.

That's true. In bright and normal light I really like the EVF. In low
light, it gets noisy but still I can see somewhat of what I'm
shooting. It's definitely no worse than an optical VF where you can
barely see anything when shooting in low light. And as stated, I still
get a pretty bright view even when stopped down.

I also like the fact that the NEX automatically switches between LCD
and EVF, sensing when my eye nears the viewfinder, and I can chimp in
the viewfinder without having to take my eye away and review the image
on the LCD. That means I can almost instantaneously fire another shot
if I don't like what I see.

Assuming IQ from the legacy lens is good on the body used, shooting on
a 24MP+ body with a manual lens is little different than deciding to
shoot medium format 15 years ago. Almost no medium format or large
format camera was auto-focus and the benefit was largely dependent on
the resolution/size of the medium being recorded upon. I don't
necessarily need to buy into a new format lens like with medium format
bodies (though I do have a number of E-mount lenses).

Here I can do all that for really, not much more than what a Pentax
DSLR costs, and unlike medium format, in a body size that borders on
being a compact camera. Consider the NEX-7 has 4X the resolution of an
*ist D.

To be honest, it's been a while since I've used a manual focus lens
aside from the FA/100 2.8 Macro in manual focus mode. I really enjoyed
using the 40mm on the NEX. There was something about the tactile
response of the lens, both in setting aperture and focus that made me
feel more in control, more in charge of what was going on.
Wahahahahaha!

I liked my 16MP NEX-5 (lacking a viewfinder), but I find the 24MP
NEX-7 a real joy to use and I can travel with a camera bag that is 1/6
the weight and 1/4 the size of what a DSLR kit would be. I'm not
through with DSLR's but the NEX-7 is without a doubt the 'go to
camera' at the moment.

To be honest I just don't see a camera from Fuji that comes close to
the NEX-7 performance for the price. No where near the 24MP resolution
and far fewer new lenses than Sony now has in E-mount. That, and I
just always seem to find something that really bugs me in the reviews

Re: Pentax X-5

2012-11-29 Thread Igor Roshchin

John asked me to forward his message to the list.

From: John Likes

As I am along time lurker, I do not know how to respond on list. However,
I bought an x-5 about a month ago, based on price mostly. The camera is
okay, build quality is somewhat lacking, but mostly I bought it for the
22mm to 560mm equivalent zoom, and frankly as well, the flexibility of
having an OK Pentax I could maybe post something to pdml with. That said,
the camera is limited software wise--it is basically a point and shoot with
a long zoom, and does not have raw or meaningful adjustments within the
jpeg.Actually, after playing with it for a month, I decided, I can do
better and did--maybe what I should have done before==ordering a K-01,
figuring to use a bunch of K mount lenses from film days.. I already have
a K-20, but it is heavy, and I am seduced by the small, light, and easy.
If it will help, you may go to
http://pastichestudio.smugmug.com. I have posted a few very
unrepresentative test shots there. One of the plusses of the x-5 is HD
1080p video. Again, this is not broadcast/professional grade, but for
$275, I think quite good.

I hope this is helpful.

Best regards,
JWL

Is the bridge you refer to the Governor's Road bridge? They renovated it maybe

I haven't been down in the Rosedale station much at all since I moved

take the Rosedale bus into town by way of that station. It's a

Why? Tom doesn't need to. He simply uses a nice Pentax lens on a
camera that gives him a bright TTL view without the flippy mirror in
the way. Even with the lens stopped down, most of the time.

I've been using SLR lenses adapted to TTL electronic cameras since

Jim,

I discovered those prices for Pentax later, after the original e-mail on

What's strange is that they didn't advertise Pentax prices under

I also got IIs, - just unpacked it moments ago and set the battery to

But that's not the point at all in this case or many others. Yeah I
think Pentax AF can be improved, but shooting landscapes that's never
been a big complaint of mine. Using it on a Pentax DSLR I'd be missing
8MP of information.

This was not an AF lens to begin with and I doubt I've used it in a
decade. However on a 24MP body it becomes a nice general purpose
focuser of light rays, even with an adapter that equals the depth of
the lens. It's still very compact. Shooting landscapes and such, or
night landscapes, chances are there's no focusing involved. Set to
infinity and shoot.

So instead of just letting the lens collect dust I can use it. Granted
I have an E-mount 50/1.8, but there's something kind of cool about
using the older lens. You gotta admit that setting aperture on the
lens is more fun than setting it on the body.

Charles, if the photos that they want to use are
one of a kind and can not be repeated, you should
ask a higher fee, But if you are just happy that
they asked to use them and will get a publication
credit, then think very hard as not to price them
out of the question. As to how I know about this
is because I have had many photos published in
newspapers, magazines, etc.
A list of my photo credits in on the page at the

They've asked nicely if they "Šcan use some of
your images". For non-profits, illustrative
use, and other things I've been known to say
"sure, just go ahead".

Since this is a commercial venture, however, I'm
inclined to say "yes, butŠ" and ask to be
compensated.

It's been awhile since I've sold any images -
what are the few concise smart questions to ask
them in terms of how the images will be used?

Re: File storage on the same card with two Pentax cameras

2012-11-29 Thread jn289

Igor, I have done this many times without any issues..Joe

Hi All,

I am considering what would happen if two Pentax cameras
are using the same SD card (alternating).
Settings both are set to the same storage settings:
folders by date.
I wonder what would happen in the following two cases:
1. The prefix of the file name is set to the same, e.g. ABC_.DNG
Will the files shot on the same day by the two cameras be stored
in the same folder?
If so, - would the cameras be able to figure which file came from which
camera, or
would the cameras be incrementing their file number when they see
a file stored (by another one) with a higher number?

2. If the prefix of the file name is set to be different, e.g.
ABC_.DNG and XYZ_.DNG, would the cameras be saving them to the
same folder?
Would they be incrementing the file number? (I assume, - no)

While I can experiment with this, - I may get my new camera just before
leaving for the weekend where I want to use it. So, I'd rather think of
the file naming schema ahead of time.

Thank you,

Igor

I've often wondered about that. Tom is incensed that Pentax doesn't
perform up to the level of the competition, and I can certainly
understand that, but I don't see the logic of buying adapters that kill
any possible performance gain that the new system gives to use the old

AF isn't fast enough, so lets put the lens on a camera via an adapter so
that there is no AF doesn't strike me as an especially logical thing to do.

This combination is pretty sweet actually. I've become more interested
in using my old manual focus Pentax lenses on the NEX-7. A few shots
of the combo and one taken using it.

The adapter is a Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter w/ Aperture Control
Pentax K, Pk Lens to Sony E-series Camera purchased from Amazon for
$22.
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Adapter-Aperture-Control-Pentax/dp/B005ORIS4Y

All lens operations are strictly manual.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638082&size=lg

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638079&size=lg

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638113&size=lg

I've ordered a similar adapter for Nikon to E-mount as I have a brand
new (hard to believe) Nikon 50/1.8 E-series (also pancake style)
arriving. That lens should also work well as a nice lens on the D800E
for night lanscapes.

Well it's definitely art photography and usually bigger means better in art
photography :-) The new lens will be used more for working with one or two
people, simply so that I can work a bit closer to them. I'm hoping that I can
get a different aspect to the look by posing people rather than just shooting
on the street. With luck I can add another twelve shots to the portfolio and

Caveat - I recently purchased a similar K-mount adapter for a different system
and it just wouldn't mount the 50/1.2. All other lenses fine but the huge back
element of the 50/1.2 just wouldn't go all the way in, no way to lock it in
place. YMMV.

As to the original proposal - I don't see a market for such a module. Q module
perhaps?

That reminded me an old joke:
At a retail store:
- Do you have toilet paper?
- No, but we have sandpaper.

On a serious note, - I have several cards, even for one body.
Occasionally, I had to multiplex the card from my K-7, and
stick it into a small P&S (Lumix) that I am was using for recording videos
in the class I am teaching.
With different camera brands, it is not a problem, - they write into
different directories. For the same brand, and especially cameras as
generationally close as K-5* and K-7, the situation is different.
So, I would like to plan for contingencies, and set up the naming on the
newer camera to avoid potential conflicts and mixups.

So, - thank you to all who shared their experience and thoughts on the
subject, - they are helpful!

And I know that my K-5 IIs has already arrived to my house.
I hope to have enough time to open the box and see it tonight.
I am going to use it tomorrow night and on the weekend at a tango
festival. That will be a good test for the low-light performance.

Igor

Sony NEX-7 and Pentax 40/2.8 Pancake

2012-11-29 Thread Tom C
This combination is pretty sweet actually. I've become more interested
in using my old manual focus Pentax lenses on the NEX-7. A few shots
of the combo and one taken using it.

The adapter is a Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter w/ Aperture Control
Pentax K, Pk Lens to Sony E-series Camera purchased from Amazon for
$22.
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Adapter-Aperture-Control-Pentax/dp/B005ORIS4Y

All lens operations are strictly manual.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638082&size=lg

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638079&size=lg

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638113&size=lg

I've ordered a similar adapter for Nikon to E-mount as I have a brand
new (hard to believe) Nikon 50/1.8 E-series (also pancake style)
arriving. That lens should also work well as a nice lens on the D800E
for night lanscapes.

Thanks for looking and for your comments, PJ, Jack and John.

This sign amused me quite a bit. It is in the parking lot of the

I found the sign, and many of the other displays, unnecessarily
preachy in tone, especially from a foundation funded by big tobacco

Interesting shots. I like the effect and find the shots nicely composed. i
think the look is limited, in that it's technique based and repetitive, but as

My experience with XP is that even if you right click & tell it to keep
the item on the menu permanently, eventually it will still wander off
somewhere. You'll have to hunt it down and "pin" it there again. You
just don't have to do it as frequently.

that's never happened to me. You must have pixies in your house who do it
while you're asleep.

Yeah, but you'd think they'd at least have the common curtsey to have
my coffee ready when I wake up in the mornings.

I think it may be some function of how frequently you use the start menu
for launching programs. I seldom do. The programs I use are almost all
either on the Quick Launch or are represented as desktop short-cuts I
can double click.

There are some programs I might use once or twice a year "pinned" to the
Start Menu itself, and those are the ones that seem prone to eventually
wander off.

This is the exact form letter I used (successfully) on many occasions
when I was contacted in this way. I obtained the basic version of it
from the Editorial Photographers association and website, along with
many of the basic documents you need to do this sort of thing without
cutting your own throat (http://www.editorialphoto.com):

"Dear {person who contacted you},

Thank you for your inquiry into the use of my copyrighted photographs.
I would be most pleased to license them for your use.

Do you have a Terms and Conditions of Use Agreement which you
customarily use? If not, I have a standard T&CUA which I can prepare
for your review.

I use the licensing rates provided by FOTOQuote Pro software, which
requires that I know the market domain, press run, and intended use
for the photos to calculate a rate to quote for your use. If you can
provide this information, or have your own company photo rate schedule
that I can review, I will be happy to work with you to fix an
appropriate compensation for your use.

I look forward to doing business with you. And thank you again for your inquiry!

Sincerely,

Good luck! For a few years there, cold call contacts like this
provided a nice living ... it's a tough business.

That was pretty much my thought, too. Sandisk 30MB/sec cards can be picked
up for around $1 to $1.50 per GB from a lot of the online merchants. That's
about what the top-of-the-line cards could do when the K5 was released, and
I paid a lot more than that for the 8GB cards I picked up when I bought mine
quite some time later. I doubt if K5 needs anything more than that, but if it
does you can find the 45MB/sec cards (that's the "Extreme", not the "Ultra")
at much the same price if you look hard enough.

It looks as though the current top-of-the-line speed is around 95MB/sec
(the "Extreme Pro"), but that's going to cost about twice as much per GB.

I agree: the complexities of fully supporting Pentax SLR mount
features would/will make for a rather complicated and expensive GXR
camera unit, likely not a terribly saleable piece.

Mechanically, Leica M-bayonet mount is bone simple: there are no
connections between the lens and the body. The lens carries its own
aperture and focusing mechanism and is completely self contained.

The GXR A12 Camera Mount camera unit provides the mount, shutter, main
sensor, and all of the other bits needed to interface with the GXR
body's control and data systems. All of the lens correction bits,
image processing, metering, etc, options are part of the camera unit
and body control system. They read the light coming through the lens,
which is independently regulated by the lens' aperture and focusing
mount.

Placing a Pentax SLR lens on a mount adapter and fitting it to the GXR
A12 Camera Mount reduces the options in using the lens to that of an
M-bayonet lens ... no auto diaphragm, no auto focus, focus and
aperture self-contained on the lens. If that's all that a camera unit
was going to provide, there would be no need to build another camera
unit specifically for Pentax SLR lenses ... just fit the adapter or
build a deeper one with a K-bayonet flange. But I suspect that sort of
thing would not be all that palatable to many who see a Pentax camera
unit as supporting at least most of the Pentax SLR mount features.

RE: File storage on the same card with two Pentax cameras

2012-11-29 Thread John Sessoms

From: Igor Roshchin

Thank you,

Igor

No can do. The mechanics of AF and other things that accompany the mount
are too big. The beauty of Leica M-mount is that (as far as I
understand) the aperture control is manual, and is in the lens. So
beside the mount itself, it would seem that GRX M-module only provides
the shutter and the meter. Kinda neat in my view. Godfrey could probably
tell more here.

Heck the current price for a GRX base and a K module would be about the
same as the original price for a K-01 assuming that the K module didn't
cost any more than the Leica M module.

Soon enough I will be getting my M-module, I hope. And then I will also
buy an adapter so that I could try 50/1.2, 43/1.9 and 77/1.8 Pentax lenses.

It would make a mirrorless body with an additional EVF a viable backup
for K-5 users

I think it is much easier to design and produce K-02 with the built-in
EVF for just that purpose.

Finally Pentax could offer the GRX and the different modules in various
colors, why the possibilities of bad taste in color combinations alone
are endless!

Keep coming ideas such as this, and the rumors of your untimely demise
will not be exaggerated... *very evil wink*

Theres always the chance for a full frame follow on. :-)

How about a replacement for the AF540 which doesn't suck? While we're at it,
make it weather sealed, and make a GPS as an optional module. Or, better yet,
give it an internal radio trigger and put the GPS in the radio trigger
transmitter. That'd also give you accurate time codes for timing flashes.

Yes, I agree, this would be great.

However, in one of the recent (around Photokina) varous interviews with various
Pentax-Rocoh engineers/managers, one of them said that they thought about it
but that it did'nt quite fit with the portability of the GX-R concept due to
the k-mount register distance needs.
My interpretation is that the module resulted too thick to go well with the
'body'.

I agree that Boris must have a more informed opinion about this...

Jaume

A modest proposal for Ricoh

2012-11-29 Thread P. J. Alling
So I've had way too much time on my hands, and I've been thinking about
the implications of the K-01 being a one off product.

It seems that Ricoh could redeem itself by releasing a K mount module
for the GRX. Yes I know it's been proposed in the past, but now with
Pentax and Ricoh having combined photographic imaging operations it
actually makes sense. It would also overcome the biggest beef that

Re: Request to use my photos - what are the smart questions to ask?

2012-11-29 Thread Christine Nielsen
Charles,

I'm sure others on the list could offer more comprehensive advice, but
I have found this site - The American Society of Media Photographers -
very helpful:

http://asmp.org/tutorials/how-write-license.html#.ULdrmYWHptQ

I think whether or not or how much you decide to charge for the use,
it's important to specify the terms of the use of the image... the
asmp site is good at walking you through the details of what use might
look like, and how to specify in a license.

Best of luck,

The genuine article indeed. No place has better beer than Prague.

Nice image; I like the way you made the beer dominant and just
suggested the other items on your table.

I like the reader's posture very much, and the dog adds a lot. I am
not sure that the car on the left isn't a bit too dominant in the
image; I think it takes attention away from the reader, whom I assume
to be the focus of the image.

Request to use my photos - what are the smart questions to ask?

2012-11-29 Thread Charles Robinson
I've been approached by a Danish (?) textbook company to use some of my images
for both print and ebook.

They've asked nicely if they "…can use some of your images". For non-profits,
illustrative use, and other things I've been known to say "sure, just go ahead".

Since this is a commercial venture, however, I'm inclined to say "yes, but…"
and ask to be compensated.

It's been awhile since I've sold any images - what are the few concise smart
questions to ask them in terms of how the images will be used?

Mustache distortion is supposed to be one of the hardest defects to
correct, which would keep me from considering it. I had the late
lamented free version of PTLens, I hope they've improved the user
interface now that they're selling it.

On 11/28/2012 5:59 PM, Darren Addy wrote:

Of more interest to me than the fisheye is the 14mm f2.8 which gets
very respectable reviews. It is rectilinear and manual focus. Perhaps
most significantly, it covers full frame (where the Pentax 14mm does
not) making it a real treat on film cameras. Reviews say that it is
corner to corner sharp on an APS-C camera from about f5.6

Cons are:
no filter threads and hood is not removable.
some mustache distortion which is said to be easily correctible with
PTLens ($25) http://epaperpress.com/ptlens/
apparently some unevenness in quality of the lenses (at least early
on?) Test and return for another if you don't get a good one.
This last point makes this one lens that I would not buy used, at
without being able to try it first.

With the instant savings, B&H has it for just $299 in Pentax mount.
They beat everyone else by that $80 instant savings, at least right
now. If I had the moola, I would be tempted to jump at one.

>

You're talking about 2 different things there.

One is whether or not the UI is an instrinsic part of the OS, and in each of
the example OSes it is not - they are all fat kernel OSs, and don't actually
need the standard UI in order to operate the computer. Server versions of
operating systems run without a UI in unattended data centres and expect you
to remote in if you want to control them

Two is whether or not a UI can run on different OSes. In principle, any UI
that's built on X can do that, and any UI that takes a similar approach of
having an abstraction layer (like X) between the OS and the UI can do the
same thing, but people have to provide the abstraction layers. In the case
of Windows I don't think there are any, so you can't just take the Windows
UI and stick it on top of Plan 9, for example, but I bet it could be done.

Windows, at least the pro versions, comes with a POSIX subsystem so you can
run native UNIX on a Windows kernel, without the Windows susbsystem (this is
probably not very clear, but it's only an email). This means that you can
run X, which in turn means you can run any of the UIs that run on X.
