RE: Windows 8 Makes Me Consider a Mac
From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Larry Colen One of my big peeves is making the user interface an intrinsic part of the operating system. There's no need for it. You should be able to run a UI on whatever OS you want, whether it's Windows 7, 8 or XP, or for that matter Linux or OSX. You're talking about 2 different things there. One is whether or not the UI is an instrinsic part of the OS, and in each of the example OSes it is not - they are all fat kernel OSs, and don't actually need the standard UI in order to operate the computer. Server versions of operating systems run without a UI in unattended data centres and expect you to remote in if you want to control them Two is whether or not a UI can run on different OSes. In principle, any UI that's built on X can do that, and any UI that takes a similar approach of having an abstraction layer (like X) between the OS and the UI can do the same thing, but people have to provide the abstraction layers. In the case of Windows I don't think there are any, so you can't just take the Windows UI and stick it on top of Plan 9, for example, but I bet it could be done. Windows, at least the pro versions, comes with a POSIX subsystem so you can run native UNIX on a Windows kernel, without the Windows susbsystem (this is probably not very clear, but it's only an email). This means that you can run X, which in turn means you can run any of the UIs that run on X. Mustache distortion is supposed to be one of the hardest defects to correct, which would keep me from considering it. A modest proposal for Ricoh
So I've had way too much time on my hands, and I've been thinking about the implications of the K-01 being a one off product. It seems that Ricoh could redeem itself by releasing a K mount module for the GRX. Yes I know it's been proposed in the past, but now with Pentax and Ricoh having combined photographic imaging operations it actually makes sense. It would also overcome the biggest beef that Pentax users had with the K-01, a lack of viewfinder. Heck the current price for a GRX base and a K module would be about the same as the original price for a K-01 assuming that the K module didn't cost any more than the Leica M module. It would make a mirrorless body with an additional EVF a viable backup for K-5 users Finally Pentax could offer the GRX and the different modules in various colors, why the possibilities of bad taste in color combinations alone are endless! -- Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a lengthly search. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: A modest proposal for Ricoh
- Mensaje original - De: P. J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com So I've had way too much time on my hands, and I've been thinking about the implications of the K-01 being a one off product. Yes, I agree, this would be great. However, in one of the recent (around Photokina) varous interviews with various Pentax-Rocoh engineers/managers, one of them said that they thought about it but that it did'nt quite fit with the portability of the GX-R concept due to the k-mount register distance needs. My interpretation is that the module resulted too thick to go well with the 'body'. I agree that Boris must have a more informed opinion about this... RE: File storage on the same card with two Pentax cameras
From: Igor Roshchin Hi All, I am considering what would happen if two Pentax cameras are using the same SD card (alternating). Settings both are set to the same storage settings: folders by date. I wonder what would happen in the following two cases: 1. The prefix of the file name is set to the same, e.g. ABC_.DNG Will the files shot on the same day by the two cameras be stored in the same folder? If so, - would the cameras be able to figure which file came from which camera, or would the cameras be incrementing their file number when they see a file stored (by another one) with a higher number? 2. If the prefix of the file name is set to be different, e.g. ABC_.DNG and XYZ_.DNG, would the cameras be saving them to the same folder? Would they be incrementing the file number? (I assume, - no) While I can experiment with this, - I may get my new camera just before leaving for the weekend where I want to use it. So, I'd rather think of the file naming schema ahead of time. Thank you, Igor SD cards are cheap. I'd just pick up some extra cards for the new camera. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I agree: the complexities of fully supporting Pentax SLR mount features would/will make for a rather complicated and expensive GXR camera unit, likely not a terribly saleable piece. Mechanically, Leica M-bayonet mount is bone simple: there are no connections between the lens and the body. The lens carries its own aperture and focusing mechanism and is completely self contained. The GXR A12 Camera Mount camera unit provides the mount, shutter, main sensor, and all of the other bits needed to interface with the GXR body's control and data systems. All of the lens correction bits, image processing, metering, etc, options are part of the camera unit and body control system. They read the light coming through the lens, which is independently regulated by the lens' aperture and focusing mount. Placing a Pentax SLR lens on a mount adapter and fitting it to the GXR A12 Camera Mount reduces the options in using the lens to that of an M-bayonet lens ... no auto diaphragm, no auto focus, focus and aperture self-contained on the lens. If that's all that a camera unit was going to provide, there would be no need to build another camera unit specifically for Pentax SLR lenses ... just fit the adapter or build a deeper one with a K-bayonet flange. But I suspect that sort of thing would not be all that palatable to many who see a Pentax camera unit as supporting at least most of the Pentax SLR mount features. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That's about what the top-of-the-line cards could do when the K5 was released, and I paid a lot more than that for the 8GB cards I picked up when I bought mine quite some time later. I doubt if K5 needs anything more than that, but if it does you can find the 45MB/sec cards (that's the Extreme, not the Ultra) at much the same price if you look hard enough. It looks as though the current top-of-the-line speed is around 95MB/sec (the Extreme Pro), but that's going to cost about twice as much per GB. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The adapter is a Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter w/ Aperture Control Pentax K, Pk Lens to Sony E-series Camera purchased from Amazon for $22. http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Adapter-Aperture-Control-Pentax/dp/B005ORIS4Y All lens operations are strictly manual. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638082size=lg http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638079size=lg http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16638113size=lg I've ordered a similar adapter for Nikon to E-mount as I have a brand new (hard to believe) Nikon 50/1.8 E-series (also pancake style) arriving. That lens should also work well as a nice lens on the D800E for night lanscapes. On a serious note, - I have several cards, even for one body. Occasionally, I had to multiplex the card from my K-7, and stick it into a small PS (Lumix) that I am was using for recording videos in the class I am teaching. With different camera brands, it is not a problem, - they write into different directories. For the same brand, and especially cameras as generationally close as K-5* and K-7, the situation is different. So, I would like to plan for contingencies, and set up the naming on the newer camera to avoid potential conflicts and mixups. So, - thank you to all who shared their experience and thoughts on the subject, - they are helpful! And I know that my K-5 IIs has already arrived to my house. RE: A modest proposal for Ricoh
Soon enough I will be getting my M-module, I hope. And then I will also buy an adapter so that I could try 50/1.2, 43/1.9 and 77/1.8 Pentax lenses. Boris Caveat - I recently purchased a similar K-mount adapter for a different system and it just wouldn't mount the 50/1.2. All other lenses fine but the huge back element of the 50/1.2 just wouldn't go all the way in, no way to lock it in place. YMMV. As to the original proposal - I don't see a market for such a module. Well it's definitely art photography and usually bigger means better in art photography :-) The new lens will be used more for working with one or two people, simply so that I can work a bit closer to them. Re: Request to use my photos - what are the smart questions to ask?
Charles, if the photos that they want to use are one of a kind and can not be repeated, you should ask a higher fee, But if you are just happy that they asked to use them and will get a publication credit, then think very hard as not to price them out of the question. As to how I know about this is because I have had many photos published in newspapers, magazines, etc. A list of my photo credits in on the page at the Pentax users gallery at the following link. When I first started it was nice to get the photo credit, but the money even made it nicer.. Joe http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/artists/joedixon I've been approached by a Danish (?) textbook company to use some of my images for both print and ebook. They've asked nicely if they can use some of your images. For non-profits, illustrative use, and other things I've been known to say sure, just go ahead. Since this is a commercial venture, however, I'm inclined to say yes, but and ask to be compensated. William Robb But that's not the point at all in this case or many others. Yeah I think Pentax AF can be improved, but shooting landscapes that's never been a big complaint of mine. Using it on a Pentax DSLR I'd be missing 8MP of information. This was not an AF lens to begin with and I doubt I've used it in a decade. However on a 24MP body it becomes a nice general purpose focuser of light rays, even with an adapter that equals the depth of the lens. It's still very compact. Shooting landscapes and such, or night landscapes, chances are there's no focusing involved. Set to infinity and shoot. So instead of just letting the lens collect dust I can use it. Granted I have an E-mount 50/1.8, but there's something kind of cool about using the older lens. You gotta admit that setting aperture on the lens is more fun than setting it on the body. Yeah, they do! It's pretty cool. They're quite nice inside; a considerable improvement over the twenty five year old (or more!) rolling stock they're replacing. Re: PESO - The New Rocket
I used to live on Summerhill near Glen Road. Wonderful neighbourhood! And right along the route of the bus to which you refer. Used to use Rosedale Station all the time. When I was metropassing last month I was also there a lot as one of our clients was a block from that station. Is the bridge you refer to the Governor's Road bridge? They renovated it maybe ten years ago. No longer stone, but they kept many of the stylistic cues of the old bridge. Thanks for the comments! And thanks to everyone else who commented. Re: Pentax X-5
John asked me to forward his message to the list. From: John Likes superannuatedt...@gmail.com As I am along time lurker, I do not know how to respond on list. However, I bought an x-5 about a month ago, based on price mostly. The camera is okay, build quality is somewhat lacking, but mostly I bought it for the 22mm to 560mm equivalent zoom, and frankly as well, the flexibility of having an OK Pentax I could maybe post something to pdml with. That said, the camera is limited software wise--it is basically a point and shoot with a long zoom, and does not have raw or meaningful adjustments within the jpeg.Actually, after playing with it for a month, I decided, I can do better and did--maybe what I should have done before==ordering a K-01, figuring to use a bunch of K mount lenses from film days.. I already have a K-20, but it is heavy, and I am seduced by the small, light, and easy. If it will help, you may go to http://pastichestudio.smugmug.com. I have posted a few very unrepresentative test shots there. One of the plusses of the x-5 is HD 1080p video. Again, this is not broadcast/professional grade, but for $275, I think quite good. I hope this is helpful. In bright and normal light I really like the EVF. In low light, it gets noisy but still I can see somewhat of what I'm shooting. It's definitely no worse than an optical VF where you can barely see anything when shooting in low light. And as stated, I still get a pretty bright view even when stopped down. I also like the fact that the NEX automatically switches between LCD and EVF, sensing when my eye nears the viewfinder, and I can chimp in the viewfinder without having to take my eye away and review the image on the LCD. That means I can almost instantaneously fire another shot if I don't like what I see. Assuming IQ from the legacy lens is good on the body used, shooting on a 24MP+ body with a manual lens is little different than deciding to shoot medium format 15 years ago. Almost no medium format or large format camera was auto-focus and the benefit was largely dependent on the resolution/size of the medium being recorded upon. I don't necessarily need to buy into a new format lens like with medium format bodies (though I do have a number of E-mount lenses). Here I can do all that for really, not much more than what a Pentax DSLR costs, and unlike medium format, in a body size that borders on being a compact camera. Consider the NEX-7 has 4X the resolution of an *ist D. To be honest, it's been a while since I've used a manual focus lens aside from the FA/100 2.8 Macro in manual focus mode. I really enjoyed using the 40mm on the NEX. There was something about the tactile response of the lens, both in setting aperture and focus that made me feel more in control, more in charge of what was going on. Wahahahahaha! I liked my 16MP NEX-5 (lacking a viewfinder), but I find the 24MP NEX-7 a real joy to use and I can travel with a camera bag that is 1/6 the weight and 1/4 the size of what a DSLR kit would be. I'm not through with DSLR's but the NEX-7 is without a doubt the 'go to camera' at the moment. Re: File storage on the same card with two Pentax cameras
If you put a card formatted in the K-7 into a K-5, it is renamed K-5 if you use it at all. The K-7 doesn't have the ability to maintain the SD Card name. It looks like you can, but once you pop it in the K-7 and use it, it's back to SD Card. Might be a workaround for that, but I'm not aware of one. On Nov 29, 2012, at 15:02 , Igor Roshchin wrote: On a serious note, - I have several cards, even for one body. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
