QLINK has some serious issues compared to the GST version. The symbol table
dump in the _MAP file looks strange and the generated binary output file is
not executable. I tested with v1.01 (from Dilwyn's archive) and v1.03 from
QLE 3.18.

[Ql-Users] QL Assembly eComic - Issue 6 Out Now.

2018-12-15 Thread Norman Dunbar via Ql-Users
Issue 6 of the QL Assembly eMagazine is now, finally, available for download.
Just in time for Christmas too! :-)

Things are a little different now. I'm hosting all the code in the eMagazine,
as well as the source (LaTeX) for the eMagazine itself on GitHUb. Each issue is
available as a "release". Don't worry, if you happen to go to the old download
location, you'll see a message telling you where to go to get the latest issue.

All the releases are here: https://github.com/NormanDunbar/QLAssem ...
e/releases while the latest edition, Issue 6, is at
https://github.com/NormanDunbar/QLAssem ... ag/Issue_6.

You will most likely be wanting the pdf and the "CODE.zip" links, unless you
want to see how the eMagazine is put together, in which case, feel free to help
yourself to one or other of the "SourceCode" links.

And as there is only a few more days to go, may I take this opportunity to wish
you all a very Merry Christmas (or alternative Winter festival as appropriate)
and a very happy and prosperous 2019.

Cheers,
Norm

Here it works as expected (wine --version gives wine-3.7).

QPC 2 works here on wine-3.0.4(stable) and wine-4.0-rc2(staging)

I'm on Kanotix Steelfire
Debian Linux 4.9.0-8 (NVIDIA) and 4.19.0-3 (INTEL)

you can get it here

[Ql-Users] Kilgus.net update roundup

2018-12-16 Thread Marcel Kilgus via Ql-Users
For those that don't monitor my blog or the QL-Forums, here are a few
updates that happened the last few weeks:

I've decoded the GoldCard boot/patch ROM code
https://www.kilgus.net/2018/11/14/supergoldcard-boot-sequence/

I've hunted down a crash in Minerva
https://www.kilgus.net/2018/11/16/microdrive-mystery/
(includes comments by the man Lau Reeves himself!)
and released a new version "1.98a1" accordingly
https://www.kilgus.net/ql/minerva/

I've released QMON/JMON for free
https://www.kilgus.net/smsqe/qmon/

I've released a picture of the QMON successor SMON that was unfortunately
never finished
https://www.qlforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3=1392=60#p25802

I've released a new QL-SD demo disc that now includes many QL games,
some for free for the first time
https://www.kilgus.net/2018/12/17/ql-sd-demo-update/

I've uploaded an update to my PNGConv tool as the 13 year old binary
exhibited some problems:
https://www.kilgus.net/smsqe/sprite-converter/

I think that was it for now... have fun.

I've used QLink 1.03 for years on many many projects including SMSQ/E
without any problems. You need to supply the FILETYPE option on the
command line or linker file if you want the result to be executable.

Do you use a real QL or an emulator? If you use an emulator it's easy:
encrypt the disc of the server which runs it with a passowrd.

I've last had contact with him in the year 2000, but the adress is not
valid anymore (I guess he let it lapse and some domain hoarder picked
it up as the current one was registered in 2003).

According to a 2013 freedom of information request he's still
registered with this address as a dentist with the Department of Health
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/gp_and_dental_practices_2

I found an eMail adress for the practice, but I didn't try contacting
it.

In the meantime I've disassembled QMac into a state where it can be
altered without messing up any pointers and data structures.

Hi,

I tried to download the binary zip which the web site says temporary
unavailable.

sorry about that, it's fixed now.

I changed the website yesterday so that it would be reachable via https
instead of http.
Whenever I make a new version of smsqe, I have a small utility that
makes an index.php file automatically, I then just have to copy that to
the website.

For some reason which I haven't had time to figure out, since the change
from http to https, I can no longer use the index.php file, but need an
index.html file. So I remade the html file by hand - and somehow
introduced a wrong link. I **thought** I had checked them all out...

PWFILE looks to of been a commerical Prowess application by Progs.

It is not on their download list.

WHat is the problem with PWFILE?

In the Prowess Distribution, Multiview works OK with SMSQmualtor NFA
device, Q68 FAT device.

Hi Francois,

I have just tried PWFile on SMSQm8 but I can see the files and can open
them.

Are you sure you have a valid NFAx device and not renamed NFA to DOS?
By default PWFile selects only those directories that are configured in
ProWess else you must edit the device by hand.

Hi Bob,

You're right, replacing 'dos' with 'nfa' followed by a reset solves the
problem.

But then my next question is : why is 'nfa' OK and 'dos' is not OK?

You are right, there is a problem. But it seems to be PWFile itself.
Renaming the device is not recognised, it sticks to the original name.
Renaming DOS to NFA under QPC2 presents the same problem.
The same is true for renaming WIN to MDV.

That's exactly what happens.
When I edit the changed name by hand in the "directory" window, it changes

[Ql-Users] QD 2018

2018-09-15 Thread Marcel Kilgus via Ql-Users
I have just updated QD 2018 to version B.05:

; B.05 Implemented per-extension editor-usage (configurable) (MK)
; Fixed BASIC usage for DEFine FuNction (MK)
; Fixed colours in replacement confirmation dialog (MK)
; Fixed DO on resize to keep the x window size (MK)
; Bottom right corner stays where it is on normal resize (MK)
; Allow CTRL+Z (mark current line) in read-only mode (MK)

As previously with the tab settings the editor-usage can now be
configured per extension, so you can say all "_bas" (or "_bsl" ;) )

There are two known problems with DM5.
When started it complains about the date.
Use ESC to ignore it. Don't try to fix the date, it will produce an error.

It also uses some FileInfo2 keywords: FEX, FEX_W, FEXF, FEX_W(), FEXF(),
FEX$.
These conflict with SMSQ/E and are possibly switched off in your FI2 and
while the replacements FI2_CALL can be used.

So if DM5 tries to use FEX it cannot be found.

My way around this was to patch the keywords to FFX in both DM5 and FI2
and switch them on again. Hopefully no other tool uses the old keywords
and no tool uses this new keyword.
Sadly the FI2 database is part of the same _bin so this patch needs to be
done to the current _bin or the whole extensions database needs to be done
again.

[Ql-Users] Wallpaper program

2019-02-19 Thread Dilwyn Jones via Ql-Users

Wallpaper Program

Recent versionsof SMSQ/E from about version 3.00 feature high colour and
high resolution screens along with the new Window Manager. This makes them
very suitable for displaying colourful and attractive background images
behind your program windows.

These images are called wallpaper. SBASIC provides a convenient to use
command called BGIMAGE which lets you display saved screens as background
wallpaper. With the wealth and variety of free images available on the
internet as JPEG, GIF and PNG files, for example, I decided to write a
program which converts these images to the type of QL screens which the
BGIMAGE command can use.

My Wallpaper program uses David Westbury’s PHGTK toolkit which shoulders the
burden of the work in converting these files and resizing images to fit your
system or emulator’s screen. It can convert the graphics to mode 16 (Aurora
and QPC2), mode 32 (QPC2, SMSQmulator and QXL), or mode 33 (Q40, Q60, Q68
and possibly even a registered QemuLator with its own customised mode 33
version of SMSQ/E).

Simply select a JPEG, PNG or GIF file using the pointer driven file
selection menu, then select whether it needs to be rotated, and how to
resize the image (e.g. preserve aspect ratio, stretch, crop) and wait a few
seconds for the conversion to take place. Small previews help you view the
screens. Once the conversion is done, you can see a preview in full-screen
mode, apply it as a BGIMAGE wallpaper, save as a screen in the current
screen mode for future use and even get help editing your boot program to
add or amend a BGIMAGE command so that the wallpaper is loaded at startup.
The program can even select a background colour to use in place of wallpaper
if you wish (e.g. apply a dark background colour late at night to save your
eyes from a bright screen).

The downside of using wallpaper on a high-colour system is the amount of
memory it takes. On a 16-bit colour system such as QPC2 each pixel needs two
bytes of memory, so a 1024×768 pixel display in mode 32 or 33 could need up
to 1,572,864 bytes just to hold the uncompressed wallpaper – at the time of
writing SMSQ/E does not support compressed wallpaper screen images. Couple
this with the copious amounts of memory needed during conversion, and you
can see that you will need to set your emulator to have quite a generous
amount of memory! So, the Wallpaper program lets you choose whether the
graphics are converted more quickly in RAM, or as files on your hard disk if
you keep running out of memory.

The Wallpaper program uses the system palette so will follow whatever colour
theme you’ve applied to your system (colour themes can be designed using the
Q-CoCo program from Wolfgang Uhlig and Bob Spelten Jr.)

A Quill _doc file is included which explains a lot about wallpaper on SMSQ/E
systems, the file formats used, the BGIMAGE command, use of programs such as
Photon and so on.

Download the Wallpaper software and a few example graphic files from
http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/graphics/index.html

Thanks Dilwyn for automating the wallpaper process.

Just a word about memory and compressed images.
As other programs or other OSes appear to put compressed images straight
to the screen, I suspect they all need to keep a final uncompressed
version in memory to work.
The space demands may go unnoticed as other systems have more RAM to play
with.

This is also true for compressed sprites that WMAN2 processes directly.
Compressing _pic or _scr files is feasible but it's mostly WIN space that
is won.

So "recent" being within the last 16 years ;-)

Technically SMSQ/E never had the concept of a background, the
wallpaper is just a window that cannot be brought to the front. And as
such it needs the same amount of memory every full-screen window needs
for its save-area. This was even true if you set the background to a
plain colour!

For v3.00 I at least implemented true plain-coloured backgrounds so
that they do not need any additional memory but are drawn on-the-fly.

[Ql-Users] Updates SuQcess2 & QCoCo

2019-02-06 Thread Bob Spelten via Ql-Users

Hi All,

I have updated some programs on my site.

SuQcess2 is now version 2.07.
Not many new features but lots of internal improvements.
The Sort Key can be set from the DATA menu.
Bug in locating the edited and sorted record from View is fixed.
Better detection of Read-Only media.
Updated ReadMe and Help files.

QCoCo is now version 1.63.
Supports the new binary _thb files next to the ascii _thm theme files.
APPLY needs a Confirm or Undo action.
RESET can reset the current theme or to the startup theme.
A new Theme Viewer (by PJW) is included showing the colours and hex
numbers.
Incomplete themes should not crash the program and are automatically
completed through the SYNCHRO option.

Invalid, referenced and 3D items are marked when Viewing the colours.
Can be started with a theme as CMD$ which overrides the config item.
Updated ReadMe file.

Happy QLing,
Bob

Having smaller, tiled images like the backgrounds often used on for example
the Acorn Risc PC helps with this. That machine did a tremendous amount
with a limit of 2MB of VRAM. Using smaller images actually increases the
CPU load, so that was the trade-off. Memory or CPU. Pick one ;)

[Ql-Users] QLTools - 2.15.5 available

2019-02-01 Thread Norman Dunbar via Ql-Users

Revision 2.15.5

1) Now compiles under Windows with Gcc. I used CodeBlocks with the built
in 32bit gcc to do the builds. There's also a makefile for shell usage.

2) Fixed 32bit bug in formatting an ed image file. It would segfault on
Windows 64bit when compiled as 32bit, but not as a 64 bit build. Turned
out to be a bug in my 'ed' formatting code.

3) If the image file doesn't exist, it will now be created when
formatting an image.

4) Files were being corrupted when extracted from an image with the '-n'
option. This was because the 'DOS_LIKE' define was not being done on
modern C compilers/operating systems. It is now! The corruption was to
add a CR in front of every LF in the file.

5) When changing the dataspace of a file with '-x' the dataspace size
was allowed to be an odd size. I'm sure this causes trouble on a QL, so
it now gets rounded up if it is odd.

6) The '-M' option to create a level 2 directory wasn't working. This
was because it was opening the image file in read only mode. I may have
been responsible for breaking this - but don't quote me. It's fixed now.

7) Dumping an ED cluster with the '-u' option (ASCII dump) was only
dumping 32 lines of 16 bytes - 512 bytes in total. The number of lines
was hard coded. It has been changed to calculate the number of lines
from the sector size. This option now works for ED drives as well.

8) Windows uses the '/' character for command line options, unlike Linux
which uses '-' and while there was some code that allowed the '/' when
'DOS_LIKE' was defined, it wasn't in all the places it needed to be. Now
it is. Windows users have the choice of whichever flag symbol they like.
(Well, '-' or '/' is all the choice actually!)

9) Slightly weird. If the '-w' option was used to write a file into an
image, and that that file was already there, it didn't prompt to
overwrite. I spent ages tracking it down and it turned out that running
in a Windows command session does prompt, only running in a bash shell,
on Windows, does it not prompt. As most users won't be in my development
bash shell, I'm not fixing this.

10) Source Code is available from https://github.com/NormanDunbar/qltools.

11) Compiled binaries for 32/64 bit Windows and Linux are also available
from https://github.com/NormanDunbar/qltools/releases - along with a new
user guide.

If you enjoy using this half as much as I've enjoyed amending it, then
I've had twice as much fun as you! :o)

Norm.

One of the reasons I did some work was a recent almost total loss of over 300
floppies going back many years. They had all seized in the cases and refused to
rotate. I have "ripped" the ones that still work onto my Linux laptop for
posterity. Qltools comes in handy as I cannot get QPC 4.0.5 to read a floppy
image. I get not found errors. But I'm running under Wine, which might be
contributing.

I have qxltools on my laptop but haven't looked at it for ages, I think I had
problems compiling it - but I can't remember. It might well be in line for some
tittivation!

You know the old saying, "you get nothing for nothing these days"? Free

I agree that ads are seriously irritating, I never watch them on TV as I
always record programs on the commercial stations, and fast forward, but
if ads are a requirement of getting something for "nothing" then c'est
la vie (as they sometimes say in Cardiff and other parts of Wales!)

The Superbasic online manual, at
https://superbasic-manual.readthedocs.io/en/latest/, has a single advert
at the bottom of the contents list on the left of the screen - that

Unfortunately not right now, and my memory is vague. I think that
all issues were gone with 16 MB and less. My next image size step
was probably 32 MB, not just 20 MB.

It could be, that just recompiling the latest qxltool source with an
up-to-date compiler and library makes the issues disappear.

I've created a couple of qxl.win files (at coffee time - I'm working)
and checked them with my own QXLWin program. The headers looks strange
to me:

On the 4 MB I see these dubious fields:

* Sectors per map = 21
* Number  of maps = 100
* Root directory length = 58

On the 20 MB I see these dubious fields:

* Sectors per map = $A1 (161)
* Number  of maps = 100
* Root directory length = 58

I've had a quick look at the definition of a QLWA header in the code and
it appears slightly broken. Some of the fields I would think essential
are not being used - sectors per block for example. That changes as the
files grow bigger and might be related to your problems.

I'll see what I can do - there are still quite a few compilation
warnings I need to get rid of first.

Looks like the structure is somehow offset by some bytes, as that is
also supposed to be 64.

I was thinking more about the line of DMEDIUM_RDONLY and
DMEDIUM_REMOVE. This is a bit more difficult to check but I think I
got the most common cases now at least.

In this way BP does not execute its own DESKTOP file but executes the one
in WIN2_

This way I can modify the file that configures the desktop and insert some
changes or loadings of extensions that I want to keep when I update to BP.

The method is not the best but at the moment we cannot do much ...
moreover, you need to know a little about SMSQE

Black Phoenix is still a product too recent ... when it comes in a more
complete form you can think of managing automatic updates ... but for now
it's not possible.

[Ql-Users] Announcing availability of a QLNET driver for the Q68 (ND-Q68)

2019-06-16 Thread Martyn Hill via Ql-Users
On this Father's Day (in the UK, anyway), I am pleased to announce the
availability of driver software that allows you to finally network the
Q68 with other QL-compatible machines via the standard QLNET ports.

The ready-to-run driver as well as the source code and a short
commentary are available at the *QL Forum* post here:

I'll be focusing on updates in the Forum post rather than this mailing

[Ql-Users] Q68 serial buffers

2019-06-22 Thread Jan Bredenbeek via Ql-Users
I've been doing some tests with the Q68's serial port.

It's well known that it doesn't support flow control. So this means that if
you receive data at, say, 38400 bps or higher, you need a buffer large
enough to hold all the incoming data to give the Q68 a chance to digest it
(for example to write a BBS page to the screen or save a block to SDcard).
I know that the Q68 uses external interrupts to transfer incoming data from
the UART to the input buffer so this shouldn't be a problem as long as the
buffer is large enough.

I noticed that at 38400 bps, the Q68 could keep up with a page of ANSI-BBS
graphics in QL MODE 4, but missed out in display mode 6 (512x384x65536). So
I'm wondering what the size of the Q68's input buffer is under SMSQ/E.

I also noticed that the SER_BUFF command which can be used to set the
buffer size in SMSQ/E is present in the Q68 version, but it always gives a
'not found' error message irrespective of the arguments I specify.
Is this a bug or a 'feature''?

Found the bug. All the SER_* commands set the parameters through a Thing
called 'ser_par_prt'. However, in the Q68 version it is called 'ser_prt'
for some reason (because the Q68 has no PAR prt?). So the SER_* commands
cannot find the Thing anymore.
Now the next challenge is to rebuild SMSQ/E (for some reason SMSQEMake
crashes at line 7810 with a 'not found' error).

Version 1.04 fixes a problem with conversion of Mode 33 images on Q68 (and
probably Q40/Q60 too), which could result in incorrect colour conversion due to
incorrect interpretation of the I bit.. The Files menu could go wrong when
there was only one executable or relocatable file in a directory in the
previous version. And the default pixel sizes of the Mode/Size menu defaults to
0 for X and Y, which could cause problems if not manually changed, so now
defaults to 512x256.

As a pedantic ass I have to object so sentences like these:

"• The UK Pound symbol is character 96 ($60) on the QL, but in ASCII
it is character 163 ($A3)" (etc.)"

ASCII is, by definition, 7-bit, so it cannot contain a character with
the number 163. The tale of characters 128-255 is one fought in many
battles. Linux tended to be "ISO 8859-1" and later "ISO 8859-15"
before they adopted UTF-8, on Windows you will mostly find the
"Windows-1252" encoding. These are very similar, but differ when it
comes to the Euro sign for example (ISO 8859-1 is too old to have a
Euro sign and the others have adopted it in different places).

But, and that is the important thing, Unicode was made to unify them
all. And UTF-8 is a pretty darn cool invention, unfortunately it came
too late for Windows, which was a very early adopter of Unicode at a
time when everybody thought "65536 characters ought to be enough for
everyone!". So Windows started to used 16-bits for every character
("UCS-2" encoding), which makes coding somewhat weird, and then they
found out that 65536 characters are not enough after all, so now
Windows uses UTF-16, which is UTF-8's big brother, with sometimes 2
bytes per character and sometimes 4. What a mess. But when it comes to
data storage UTF-8 is the way to go these days, always!

For QPC I already implemented these translations 20 years ago when
copying text to/from the clipboard. But well done for bringing UTF-8
to the QL :-)

Cheers, Marcel

Then pedantry you shall get!

ASCII uses 7 bits of an 8 bit field for data. The 8th bit was initially
defined to be used as a parity bit. People don't read the X3.2 standard,
and usually start with the X3.4 standard. Which used "up to" 8 bits for
data.

2019-10-02 Thread Dave Park via Ql-Users
I think we have to remember that people didn't communicate as easily or
freely then as we do today, so specifications were far more localized than
we'd suspect. If sites had 8 hole punched tape readers, it would be a
sensible use. When modems came along, and a parity bit was part of the
modem's protocol, it freed up that 8th bit. Lots of people hacking it to
their own purposes. Someone with the luxury of a CRT going, "h, I can
generate extra characters, graphical elements, all sorts!" and before you
know it, ASCII evolves by who communicates the best ;)

Fun times!
