Additionally you should keep your heels and ankles elevated with either heel
lifts or pillows under your ankles... I'm surprised it's on your ankle and
not your heel.

While its healing try to either keep all pressure off it or rotate pressure
elsewhere by turning.

It's easier to prevent skin breakdown than it is for it to heal, you should
try to make it a routine to check for early signs of pressure sores or if
you're like me a c2 quad have a caregiver or family member check daily. My
cargivers do it while I do my range of motion exercises.

I've had mostly good experiences I rarely get UTI's now. I switch from
my night bag to leg bag when I get in my char and just monitor my leg bag as
my bladder is about the size of a walnut now... I use silver impregnated
catheters to help prevent uti's, catheter gets changed every two weeks.

Maintenance is as follows:

Leg bag: rinse with diluted bleach after every time you use the leg bag.

Night bag: rinse with diluted bleach after you drain it and your changed to
the leg bag

I've had mine for about 6.5 years now..

I had my supra-pubic for a little under 17 years. I just had mine removed in
May to be replaced with a urostomy.

For the first 15 years, I had great results. Much like many of the other
guys and ladies. It's pretty easy to take care of the SP and I would have to
say it's one of the better ways to manage the bladder if you are a
quadriplegic incapable of catching yourself.

Over the years I was told to change the catheter every two weeks, every
three weeks, and ultimately every four weeks. I did have a doctor who did a
pretty extensive experiment over a couple of years and determined that it
was best to change the catheter every two weeks. They have empirical data
which indicated there was much less incidence of UTIs, but for most of the
time I liked changing my catheter every three weeks.

I had to have my SP removed because my bladder atrophied to the point where
it would not drain properly and I was in constant pain. As I said before,
that is not the norm. Many guys are able to go for 30+ years without any
significant difficulties.

Cleaning the bags is important and I really wouldn't advise plugging the SP
unless you're trying to use an external catheter and intermittently draining
the excessive urine out of your bladder.

Hopefully I didn't confuse you, but I tend to think it's a good procedure if
you have a decent urologist who is familiar with quadriplegic.

I've only had mine for 5 1/2 months (I was injured last Oct) so I don't have
a long-term look at the suprapub. My instructions for maintenance were to
clean the stoma morning and night with Dial soap, clean the bags (I use a
leg bag during the day) with a bleach solution, and change the catheter once
a month. The stoma has not yet healed, leading me to wonder if it ever does?
I like your comment about trading between vinegar and bleach, Don.

The main problem for me started when a CNA disconnected my leg bag in the
shower, allowing bacteria in. I had a series of infections after that and
I'm still not quite recovered. Beware of idiocy. :/

Now for the brutally honest part...during the procedure my BP went up to
210/110, so make sure your urologist understands AD and has ways to lower
your BP immediately available (nitro paste, pain meds, etc). It may have
just been the way they performed the procedure or the fact that I'm so
susceptible to AD. Has anyone else had this experience?

I have another question- does anyone here have bad AD symptoms when the
catheter is being changed and up to a day after it was changed? If so, how
do you prepare for/treat the problem?

Btw, if you're able to you should rinse legbags or nightbags out by
alternating between a bleach solution one night and a vinegar solution the
next night. Kills different bacteria and keeps them almost odor-free.

Thanks, Daniel - but I'm a little confused. My urologist said I could just
keep it capped and empty it into a bottle or urinal every 4-6 hours. He
said a leg bag was optional for longer durations. Also said it would have
to be changed monthly, either at his office or by a home nurse. He didn't
say anything about rinsing with diluted bleach or anything. I thought he
was making it sound too simple!

Just a little update to fix some of the confusion. I can take calls with
only voice commands I don't need to push a button all I do is say answer
call, the only thing I need to push a button for is to make a call out, you
push the rear button on the headpiece and say call and then the name or the
number and it calls. I have gotten many e-mails about this and decided to
reply on the quad list instead of each one. The headpiece does come with an
optional ear loop to hold it in place even better and it came with three
different earpieces to fit different sizes of your ear.

Since this post I have also bought a USB Bluetooth adapter for my computer
so my Bluetooth headset can sync up to my computer and I set up another
Dragon profile to use the Bluetooth headset as a microphone and it works
extremely well. The Bluetooth adapter was $29.99 while I am using it as a
microphone for my computer I can still accept calls and make them.

I love the Droid phone (my Motorola Droid), but the one thing that really
disappointed me about it was the bluetooth abilities.
At first it could not even call out via bluetooth. You had to call, then
activate the bluetooth. After the OS update it could call out, but there is
no confirmation, it just calls the first name it thinks you said. It still
has few options, like auto-answer, confirmation, etc. I think most bluetooth
ear pieces work as well as any, if it's good one one phone it's good on the
Droid. Just few options.

But I love the Apps, Google Sky (point camera up it shows what
constellations are there), TV.Com, Google Navigation (Free GPS voice/map
navigation), ESPN Scores, Google Voice (converts voice mail to text),
Slacker Radio, Locate (track other phones on a map), Scanner Frequencies
(listen to fire/police scanners around world), I haven't paid for any Apps
yet, but there are some I'm thinking about.

It's not a quad friendly phone, must use skin or specific pointer to move
screen or hit icons. I try to use my knuckle with degrees of success. And
it's slippery.

I got the Plantronics savor m 1100 headset and I must say I like it, the
only thing I have a hard time with is the fact that I have to push a button
to say a command like call and then either a name or the number. I'm getting
better at hitting the button but the fact that I can't use my fingers makes
it really hard. The audio quality is extremely good and it has three
microphones on it with excellent noise cancellation so people are able to
hear me talk even when say I'm out with my friends and it's kind of noisy
using the audio IQ 3 noise canceling technology. The other thing comes with

works from what I saw was that you lay down on an enclosed bed and they fill

Welcome, Karan! While each of our disabilities affect each of us differently,
none of us are alone in this new adventure.

My Uncle is a Dr. who studied the effects of indwelling medicinal pumps. His
advice: Only as a very last resort. I took 20mg Baclofen 4x a day for 20
years, then switched to 600mg Neurotin 3x a day.

If you talk with a Dr. who really understands muscle spasms as the neurological
level AND understands what each of the receptor inhibitor drugs do, then you
will find the right option for your specific needs.

I, too, have a son. He is a great motivator for me. I've been considering
writing a book on my experiences being a Dad in a chair. There are many tricks
I had to learn on my own in raising him.

God bless and welcome.

Hi, I was walking with my children 2 yrs ago was struck by a teen who
went off the road struck me as I was bent over. I am c4, 5 6
incomplete with feeling to the toes, just very altered sensation. I was
in the hospital for almost 1 yr. I use a manual chair to amazement, I
have bladder sensation bowels. Although I have my share of spasms (I
take 10mg ditropn b.i.d), leakages at night and my bowels respond every
2-3 days with no added help. Pre-accident was normally every day. I
have lots of tone/spasticity in L. leg am considering baclofen pump.
I only take 20mg now of baclofen which does nothing. Any higher dose
tires me liver function tests go abnormal. I am hooked on 25mcg
fentanyl patches q48 hrs and still have pain. I refuse to add more
meds. I do not ever sleep for more than an hr. every night. Waking in
the a.m. is horrible - never used to be. I want to wean off fentanyl.
Since I transfer to toilet with the transfer board (lots of work), I
would love to find pants that help b/c I can't pull them up under me.
This injury has caused our world to turn upside down some days it is
so overwhelming. My kids keep me going God's healing. I feel like
I'm the only mom in the world going thru this. At the time of the
accident, I was 5wks from grad. college (RN). Since then, I graduated
passed boards. Now what I LOVE nursing it's not easy to find it
from a w/c. If I am assisted to stand, I can hold a walker for 5-10
mins a few steps - left leg hinders advancing it so dr. wants me to
consider pump. I have great use of my dominant hand arm, left fingers
are closed. Anyway, I could go on forever, so thanks for listening.

Is it possible you were having an autonomic dysreflexia situation? Sometimes
my blood pressure drops really badly and it's usually caused by something
wrong with somewhere I can't feel. Most of the time when I have autonomic
dysreflexia my blood pressure rises, but every once in a while it drops...

If your blood pressure is low that could be the cause, my doctor had put me
on something for low blood pressure a long time ago I wish I remembered what
it was, now I am off it and my blood pressure is 130/70 normally unless I'm
in pain or something. I would try talking to your doctor.

overheating. At first I was just light headed so I reclined a bit. A
neighbor stopped by and I tried to sit up. Everything stated going black. My
hearing started fading out. I never went out, but it was close. It was bad
for about 30 minutes, but was still not back to normal for hours. Once I was
OK, I was just tired for awhile. I keep thinking of getting a prescription
for low blood pressure medication to use on days like these. I often get
slight cases like this after my b-program I know this topic was going

Honestly I would try and find a different home health agency, I have had
problems with my current home health agency. What you can do is read the
list of allowable items that your insurance provides to better help your
future conversations with them. Pretty much once you show that you know what
you are entitled to them they will do one of two things they will either
suck it up and give you what you need or drop you which I don't think they
can do based on not providing you with stuff that is covered by your
insurance. Luckily where I live there are multiple home health agencies. The
first one I had ended up dropping me because they said they couldn't provide
the right help for my level of injury. The one I have now the only reason
why I'm still with them is because of the nurses, the nurse that comes out
to see me is also one of my nurses I have had often at one of the hospitals
I go to when I get pneumonia or another type of bad infection.

provide my beads. Anymore, because I am connected to a respirator. I
couldn't believe what I was hearing. They told me to find another agency.
I caught advocacy. They told me they cannot help me. I told my caseworker

I changed from the regular supera-pubic catheters to the silver impregnated
ones, along with making many changes such as changing catheters every 2 to 3
weeks and always using a new nightly bag with a neat catheter. I also
stopped drinking as much soda as I once was and I've been drinking juices
mostly, ever since I've done this it's very rare for me to get a bladder
infection.

Hi everybody,

I would like to know if there's a person on this list that know or had a
Mitrafanoff neourethra procedure or Bladder augmentation ? I don't know too
much about this procedure but I've heard that people who had it done, there
multiple bladder infections stopped. I'm really interested to know more
about it because I have way too much infections, 2-3 per month. I would
appreciate to have some informations on this procedure or just hear people
who had it done and how it went after?

Thanks in advance for your support,

2009-12-08 Thread Daniel Espinoza

1) Does someone on the quad list have or had the same experience for years
and if so, did you find an answer ?

yes and yes

2) Is there something different I can do to prevent these nasty Bladder
infections ?

yes, there is a couple of things that I had to start doing to get rid of my
bladder infections, talk to your doctor about using silver coated catheters,
the dressing around your catheter make sure it is cleaned and he put on a
new dressing at least every couple days. Also I would like to add, after
using antibiotics you might want to think about taking probiotics. We have
organisms in our bodies that helps pretty much everything and when you take
antibiotics it kills them. The one that I have had an issue in the past with
is Clostridium difficile often called C. difficile or C. diff, which I got
after taking antibiotics which is when most people get it because the
natural bacteria in your body can't fight it off.

3) Does somebody ever had a severe episode of Autonomic dysreflexia and is
it normal that during these episodes, you truly feel that you are going to
die or have a stroke ? If so, did you had the worst, I mean the worst
headache you can imagine and did you had chest pain because of the heart
rate to high ?

I wouldn't say I was worried about living or dying, but it really scared me.
The headache that comes with the blood pressure rising I really, really,
really dislike. Besides the obvious trying to figure out what's causing you
to have an episode the best thing for you to do is try to stay calm and take
long breaths to try to get your heart rate and blood pressure down.

4) Does anyone in the United-states or Canada know a really good Urologist
that deal mostly with paralyzed bladder ?

I am sorry I do not, besides the ones at Craig Hospital in Colorado a couple
hours outside of Denver.

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find some answers to two problems I've been battling since my
accident 6 years ago that left me Quadriplegic C5/6. These 2 problems are:
Bladder infections (uti) and Autonomic dysreflexia. I know that most Quads
have experience these two problems but for some reason, I'm different, I'll
explain. Just as an example, in the last two months, it is my fourth bladder
infections. The most frustrating thing is that I'm doing everything a person
can do to prevent these repeatedly infections. I drink water like crazy, I
take Mandalamine pills, I've tried cranberry pills, vitamine C and cranberry
juice, I tried some irrigation with syringe. I also have a suprapubic
catheter which I change every month and I try to be as sterile as possible
but for some reason, my body is very vulnerable to infections. I've been
trying to find some answers to these multiple infections that put me in
hospital most of the time with uncontrollable autonomic dysreflexia. Six
months ago, I went into an episode so bad that I felt into a semi-coma, my
blood pressure was 250/190 for a long period and the nitroglycerine wasn't
working at all so they had to gave me a beta-blocker to bring all my vital
sign down but there was a risk to go in hypotension because it drops the
blood pressure to fast and that is what happen and it was lights out for me
for 72 hours. Also, last year, I've had a bad bladder infections, nothing
new, but this time it was different because the infection when upstairs, it
started as a normal bladder infections then it when in the kidneys and the
infection when into my blood. This is call a septic shock, so what happen
is, my blood went down really bad and fast, so I lost consciousness and if
you don't act fast enough, your organs start shutting down. In my situation,
they had to put a catheter in my neck and gave me very powerful antibiotics
to be able to recover and they have to bring your head down and the feet up
in the air.

Finally, I just showed you a little bit what I've been through and still
struggle with it. The problem is the catheter because it is an open door for
bacteria but it is frustrating because it is the only explanation the
doctors are giving me, so I started searching outside my area in Canada but
it is on my own expense. Presently, I am really desperate to find some
answers and help from you guys and girlz on this site because I truly

The first thing that came to my mind was my experiences when I was a new
injury. I had problems keeping my blood pressure up and therefore I would
tilt backward a lot while I was in my wheelchair. The problem was that I
was wearing a leg bag and the urine would flow back into my bladder thereby
causing an infection.

To remedy this problem I ended up using a bad bag and cutting it down so
that it would fit on the side of chair so that the urine would drain into
the bag constantly as opposed to back into my bladder. John has often
written about the perils of urine backflow and I am one to tell you it is
dangerous.

I have also found that irrigation with a vinegar/saline or sterile water can
be an effective tool in fighting off infections.

I have received so many different answers on how often I'm supposed to
change my SP. My urologist wants me to change it every four weeks; my
spinal cord doctor says every two weeks; and then there are some spinal cord
doctors who want me to change it every week. Lately I'm inclined to do it
every two weeks because I have had some problems when I leave the That are
in for four weeks. This may help, but I can't guarantee it.

I know there are some really great people on here who know where you can
contact a urologist. Hopefully that will help you out.

RE: [QUAD-L] multivitamins

That's why I'm always scared to go to hospitals, but when I have to I guess
I have to. Luckily and unlikely I have had MRSA in my bladder so when I go
into the hospital I am put on precaution and anyone that comes in has to
wear one of those paper gowns and wash their hands before and after they
come in. So I feel somewhat safe going to hospitals now. When I was at Craig
rehab hospital they taught us to try to stay out of hospitals and other
places where people can pass bugs around and gave us some tips. MRSA is one
but do you really don't want if you can avoid it! The bladder it's not so
bad, at least not as bad as I heard about how people get it on their wounds,
I have heard horror stories about how their wounds don't heal and the
possibility of it going to some other place in the body through the
bloodstream.

Back in the real world, I've always taken vitamins because they help your
immune system to function at it's best. I don't know a Doctor that doesn't
take them, or a pharmacist. It woud be nice if we could eat such healthy
food that we didn't need supplements, but I can't be certain of my meal
composition.

Superbugs are a result of over use of anti-biotics and people taking the
anti-biotic only untill they feel better and not completing the full
regiment. Many anti-biotics are present in the foods we eat. Normal bugs get
a chance to mutate untill they are immune to the medicine we depend on to
keep them in check.

The stupid part is sending these people to a hospital were they infect
others with comprimized immune systems because even the best hand washing
will not stop the transmision of superbugs. There is a bug specific to
overuse of hand sanitizers but it isn't a superbug. It can be a problem in
nursing homes and hospitals.
Multivitamins and probiotics will help you survive a superbug outbreak.

Best to all,

john

I agree with Dan, the more careful you are by using anti-bacterial the
weeker your immune sistem gets and germs become more resistant. I've heard
of those super bugs, that's scary, bugs mutating due to antibacterials.

I used to be a big fan of antiseptic products until I learned, as Don
suggested, that by doing so we are creating super bugs. If we do this long
enough, we will become like the boy in the bubble. In effect, instead of
becoming healthier we will become sicker -- more fragile. Our immune systems
will weaken from disuse and any minute exposure to a pathogen will make us
gravely ill. It makes sense as we have been living with these germs since
the beginning of time and they rarely made us sick. Unfortunately, the
commercial industry is trying to convince us to buy all these expensive and
unnecessary products.

So, I've gone back to doing things the way I was raised. No more
antibacterial this and antibacterial that. Instead I stick to plain old soap
and water. I've also gone green with all of my household products. All you
need to keep your house clean are simple and cheap products such as ammonia,
white vinegar, washing soda, etc. Go ahead, ask your grandma.

reason you don't like Firefox? Firefox works great for me, I gave chrome a
try for a little while and was unhappy with it because it was like a
stripped down Firefox that didn't have a lot of the features I use. I would
definitely suggest Firefox over chrome and Internet Explorer but that is
just a personal preference. Good luck I hope this helps you in some way!

Lyrica works fine for me without anything else.

Hi Mr_Pockets...

You take Lyrica with the 2700mg Neurontin? I was told they couldn't give my
Lyrica because of the Neurontin I take. I ended up using Cymbalta instead. It
worked but after a couple days it started putting me to sleep at about 7:00pm
everyday no matter where I was or who I was with. (Not Good!!)

I tried changing the time I took it but the effect was the same... 7:00pm, I'm
dosing off and nothing would stop it. It only lasted 2 hours but still... it
sure put a damper on me visiting people after work or going out for dinner!

Maybe Lyrica would do better if I can take it with Neurontin. Did your docs
have any hesitation about using them together?

Best!

Why not just keep the computer on all the time? I have mine on all the time
and then when it is not used or 30 minutes it goes into sleep mode. All it
takes for me to wake it is one puff on my Quad joy. When it's in sleep it
doesn't use much energy at all. Especially if your motherboard supports
green power, must of been a computers support it. Not only does it help your
computer but it doesn't use as much power and it also monitors your power
usage. Microstar international has an application to monitor your power
usage and if you want to lower it if you're worried about your electric
bill.

Most modern computers support sleep, although how they wake up this
different depending on your motherboard. Mine gives me the option to choose
if I want mouse movement Quad joy, keyboard, USB devices, or network types
to wake up the computer.

What Steve has written here is 100% on target. That's what I did and I also
purchased a Palm pad and an X-10 transmitter module from X-10.com.

This way I can roll up to my desk and turn on my computer with a mouse stick
and the Palm pad. There is a rollover mat, but I would only use this
approach if your client doesn't have the ability to use a mouse stick.
Additionally, it would be very beneficial for your client to have the
ability to use a mouse stick in order to avoid hard booting the computer
every time DNS ends up getting locked up with a program.

Awfully this helps.

try this first as a last resort. Since starting the daily half dose, I have
had 2 UTI's in 4 years.

Hi group,

I read some of the posts regarding the sweating problem. I too have had this
problem and ran a bunch of test. The doctors where pretty stumped. I think
that I have finally figured out that it's a UTI problem. When we sit up it
puts more pressure on the bladder which irritates the bladder when it's
already upset from the UTI. It causes pain and then we sweat. I take a daily
antibiotic for urine and have no more sweating. I may be wrong but it has
helped me.

Good luck and great health,

[QUAD-L] frustrations with Medi-Cal and Medicare

2009-08-30 Thread Daniel Espinoza

I seriously don't understand how you guys live off this, I get 1400 a month
and then I have to pay about 1100 for my share of cost. Luckily I'm not
going to get kicked out for not paying rent but I am supposed to and that's
beside the point. It gives me $300 for rent, food, utilities, and any
medical supplies not covered. I think it's really screwed up, I'm going to
call them on Monday and try to figure this stuff out but before I do that I
would really like to know what you guys think? It's almost like I have no
choice but to live in a nursing home, which I would imagine would cost more
than what they give me a month. I live in Southern California so maybe that
has something to do with my frustrations because everything seems to be a
lot more expensive here than elsewhere. I really don't want to move because
all of my family lives here, and they take care of me when my caregivers
don't.

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys have for me. I've been a quad for
a little over three years now so I really don't understand the ins and outs
of all of this just quite yet..

I have heard several people including myself talk about profuse sweating and
shaking when getting in the chair. I have taken so many pain meds to control
it but never resulting in more than a few hours of relief. I just began
taking a strong dose of Lyrica and it seems to be the key for me. I'm
backing down the narcotics and it has only been a week but DAMN. I take 1 in
the morning and I don't sweat or feel the presure that starts AD. I have not
had a day without sweating and shaking for over nine years. I feel like I
might have a life again. (knock on wood)
We are all different and I know many of us have problems that it won't help.
I will let y'all know if it stops working. It has been so long since I have
felt this good. I want to goto the park and watch lovers and throw stale
bread at the birds again. (I feel like I could really nail one, maybe even a
lover.)

I really wish you all the very best,

Quick Note / Option:

Check into Dr. Scott Falci (Fal' chee) at Craig Rehab in Denver. His nurse,
Charlotte, is a great help. I had a syrinx caused by tethering -- the cord
was tethered --attached-- to the surrounding dura mater, the covering that
surrounds the cord and brain and holds cerebrospinal fluid.

This tethering is a common cause of quad-related syrinxes and often goes missed
or misdiagnosed. In 1996, when I was diagnosed, Dr. Falci and Dr. Barth Green
(at the Miami Project) were the only ones experienced in this UN-tethering of
cervical syrinxes in quads with the purpose of (A) Relieving pain -AND- (B)
Restoring some function! At the time, Falci had already done the procedure
over 100 times with an excellent (and immediate!) success rate.

Best of luck. I empathise and sympathise with your problems!

Best wishes,

I gone to the hospital with them on your kind of often. Don't need help

quad for 3 1/2 years, so I guess I'm kind of a newbie. I fight UTIs and
pneumonia, the UTIs I usually don't need to be hospitalized unless my
doctors worried however the pneumonia is something I go and visit the
hospital for. I really don't like being in the hospital or being suctioned
through the nose, or getting a trumpet in my nose because it's so raw and
bleeding in there. Right now I have tried using a therapeutic vest and the
jury is still out on how well it works. Thanks a lot for this information
may be one day I'll end up giving in and getting one also. Right now we were
turned down for a home suctioning kit, I think with the trach they wouldn't
have a problem with me getting one. I've got some thinking to do I still
really don't want to have the trach but maybe someday.

I can't believe I made it to my 35 th year anniversary. My parents were
told after each hospitalization I might not make. It seems I was strong
enough to defeat their predictions even though I appeared to be weak at the
time. I was given a tracheostomy after each of my surgeries, but it was
removed before I came home. I had so many long hospitalizations trying to
get off the ventilator and over pneumonia. I was given another tracheostomy
during a pneumonia in 88, which they changed to a trach button before I left
the hospital. It has kept me out of the hospital except for a UTI that got
into my bloodstream causing a coma for 13 days. I had a pneumonia last
year. The trach buttonallows me to get over the bronchitis at home. I
didn't want it, but it turned out to be a good thing for me and not very
noticeable. It is mostly capped, unless I have a lot allergies or
congestion and might need suctioned as needed. It is easy for anyone to
learn how to do. I am quite healthy almost all of the time. I love to
enjoy life going to concerts, which is one of my favorite things to do.
Sorry this has been such a lengthy post.

I have forgotten, who has the longest survivor that we know of. They had

What does everybody think about the new health-care bill as nobody has
mentioned. I know that is a political issue, but very important for our
ability to survive and get what we need. There has been talk about taking
away from Medicare. Medicaid is also having problems with reduced state
revenue for problems. Kansas has mentioned there will be some reductions
with populations such as ours, but I don't know where it will be targeted.

Here is a poem i wrote 5 years ago concerning how i feelabout pain and
injury...

Pain is something held inside

Hurts with time and works on pride

As it gets worse its hard to change the tide

Becomes clear that it cant be described

Try as you may, try as you might

Its just you alone in this futal fight

As they dope you and drug youfor a suppossed help

All they want to do is maintain your squelch

The more you talk the less they listen

Making is all more clear foolishness of your position

Wont i get one more chance? They quickly say no

Its not their fault , its just for show

How much longer canI go on

Is it all for real or is it just a fateful song

Yes son this is real for you it is

Hold tight though and you will get through this

There are no true winners in this life

Just some that are lucky and avoid the strife

They find a place to call their own

Where noone can hurt them and convey thoughts of their own

I know for sure he had one when he was in the hospital because his blood

am always checking that

What I am wondering is that my husband breaks out in sweats around his

But his blood pressure is never elevated. Can he have AD without the blood
pressure elevation? He gets so many of the symptons except that.

Thanks for your help.

them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart
will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of
your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and
corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an
efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?
Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy
vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily
allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine,
that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of
the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If
you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise
program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! . Foods are fried these days in vegetable
oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be
bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should
only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans ! Another vegetable!!! It's the best
feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about
food and diets.

And remember:
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

AND.

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition
and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting
nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and
suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

2009-05-04 Thread Daniel Espinoza
Wow I'm very sorry to hear that. :[

Thanks for the advice! At Craig they said I wasn't ready, I had just gotten
off a Vent They recommended it if I got more return which I have... I'm
c4-5ish functional asymmetrically now, although I'm not sure if that's
enough...

I found out I had osteoporosis and then one of my aides broke my femur while
doing leg exercises, If you have never had a standing frame, you should be
tested to make sure you don't have osteoporosis. I know you are a newer
injury than myself. I found out I could not get a standing frame, I was
disappointed as I finally had insurance that would buy one.. If I had had
one this might not have happened. When I went to Craig, they recommended
one, but the state of Kansas would not buy. I guess they don't believe in
prevention.

That scares me as I am still waiting on my chair and am mostly bed bound
Wouldn't a standing machine help?

i haven't *quite* had the same issues with bone the Billy and Merril are
mentioning ... BUT...

I'm wondering if anybody here has had a DEXA Scan recently (or ever) to test
bone density.

I had it done 3 years ago and had pretty bad bone loss -- as expected. I
started Fosamax thinking it would help but couldn't take it for 9-10 months
while I was on bedrest after my surgeries last year.

Since then I took it for another year and had another scan just a week or two
ago. My scores were the same or worse in most cases!

I don't know if it's the Fosamax not working -OR- if the time on bed rest
un-did any benefits I might have had from the Fosamax in the first place.

I'm just curious how anybody here scored. I had areas ranging from -1.7 to
-3.5 (none in the + side!).

Best wishes!
