[RBW] Re: WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I am not expert enough to explain where the differences come from, but
different cranks use different bb spindle lengths to get the same
configuration. The Sugino AT's just happen to use a relatively long
spindle but once installed they clear the chainstays exactly as they
should. That said, being a triple, the Q factor is going to be more than a
double.

Sheldon's BB chart is here: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html
(scroll down to the Sugino section for the Sugino AT)
I wish there were more Q factors filled in but hopefully there is enough
info there to do some comparisons.

If you do go with a double, the IRD compact double (46/30) might be on your
list... I have that on a Hilsen and it works great. I am sure there are
other great options as well.
http://boulderbicycle.bike/IRD-Compact-Crank-46-30-assorted-lengths.html

Hopefully other AT users (or ??) will chime in with more knowledge and
experience...

[RBW] Re: WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I have had great luck using the IRD QB-95 BB (127.5) with the AT cranks, at
times using a drive side spacer (sorry I do remember but I will guess at
3-5mm for the spacer).

http://boulderbicycle.bike/IRD-JIS-Bottom-Bracket-QB-95-lots-of-sizes-best-bb-option-REGARDLESS-of-cost.html

The AT's are great cranks if you stay with a triple... and the BB cost is
going to be less than a different crankset.

[RBW] Re: A few Cheviot sweaters available...

2020-09-08 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Ben,

Just my take, and possibly different than others...

I think the more slim you are the more the sweaters run true to size. That
said, being not as slim as I would like, I sized up and that approach ended
up working really well for me (from an XL to 2XL). I normally wear XL
shirts and t-shirts.

Only you can decide where you fall on the slim scale, or how you prefer
things to fit, so advice can only go so far. That said, the sweaters are
beautiful, warm and of real quality.

[RBW] FS: Bikes and frames for now... Bags, components, misc. to follow

2020-07-30 Thread Bob Lovejoy
(Cross posted with the iBob list)...

I am finally getting around to listing some bikes and frames that need to
find new homes. I am planning both a move and some exploring so space and
becoming a little more minimalist seem important.

I will be adding pictures and probably more information ASAP, the
additional I know I need (like pictures of the bags for the Brompton) as
well as anything requested. Respond directly (DM) to me with any
questions, requests for better pictures or information, offers or intent,
etc.

For now, I am only considering selling the Appaloosa and Cheviot as
complete bikes, and only with local pickup or possible delivery or meeting
(within 150 miles of 61401). If they do not sell as completes, I will
probably sell the frames and components separately, but for now.. completes
only for the two Rivendells and the Trek. And local pickup/delivery only
for the Appaloosa and the Cheviot for now.

Let me know of any questions, problems with viewing etc. Prices,
descriptions, measurements, etc. are included in the listings
(hopefully...). Be sure to expand the full heading/description. I have
also added a few comments to specific pictures (and will keep updating as
needed). I will go back and check again but let me know if anything needed
is missing.

And apologies for the pictures so far... I will try and take better ones as
needed.

https://flic.kr/s/aHsmPGpFRD

Rivendell Cheviot - 60cm frame - silver - Paul CP brakes
https://flic.kr/s/aHsmPGna5U

Trek 720 (1983/84) - great bike, great build...
https://flic.kr/s/aHsmPGnhJ5

Brompton M6R - 2017 - very little use on this one. I have had two other
Bromptons and used them almost daily. But here in a smaller town there is
not much need or advantage (though traveling is always possible).

There is at least one more (Zunow frame) I will list, maybe two, but these
are what I know best for now.

Payment would be through Paypal (full goods and services) but do not
attempt to send payment before communicating with me.

Let me know of any questions (directly through DM). Like I said, I will be
listing more things in the next week or so, either here or on Ebay. If it
seems appropriate to the group, I will try and list things here first.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Leah,

I was moving bikes around and remembered you had asked about 60cm Cheviot
lengths and wheelbases?

I measure 48 inches dropout-to-dropout.
Using 700x38 rims/tires, those add ~27.5" to the total length, so ~75.5
inches total,
plus maybe a little for a rear fender if so equipped.

And that is with 54cm chainstays (measured and true to the online spec)

Hope that helps...!

Bob

P.S. My Cheviot has managed to live a more sheltered life than the
lambbo's!? All paint, well, 99.8%?, still on the bike and glad to be I
think...

[RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-05 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Leah,

I only respond here as I do sincerely feel your pain, at least that
something-like-pain that comes from expecting one thing and getting
another. With your real life experience with the mixte type of
Rivendell's, you should have had the most knowledge and yet you were still
caught off guard. It occurs to me you are at somewhat of a disadvantage,
in that you know what the bikes have been, how they ride, what you love,
all of that and more. Someone buying their first and possibly only
Rivendell would not know the difference, with nothing to compare to.

I suppose if I had one Rivendell marketing wish, it would be that any
changes made to an existing design would be clearly published, easily
found, and with the necessary geometry or specification numbers to compare.
And there could be a short explanation of the changes and the hoped for
improvements. If changes are made, they should at least have a clear way
to distinguish between v1/v2/v3... And any and all of that should not be
buried in blagh's, blogs, side comments or anywhere else where you have to
be in the know to find it.

Not that I am any kind of expert but I do have three somewhat modern day
Rivendells - a Cheviot, an Appaloosa, and a Hilsen - all built up well and
dialed in for their intended use. I do love the bikes, I do, I do. But I
study the specs, I try to understand the geometry and sizing, and even then
it has felt like a gamble at times.

And you are absolutely right about the real-world considerations... Not
fitting in or on available bike racks, public or private, is a problem!
Not being able to carry a bike down a set of stairs and make the corner at
the bottom can be a problem! I am absolutely sure the new long (and then
longer...) designs are more stable in a lot of situations, most
specifically in the hills outside Walnut Creek, CA, but I do not have many
such hills... but I do have stairs and I do like to take my bike other
places to explore. And I would love to know enough to just be able to
recommend Rivendells (new or used) to anyone asking. But, yeah I
mean, are the next run of Appaloosa's at least mostly the same, or close
enough to advise someone based on mine? Are the Cheviot's changing? Will
the Clem's change more? Someone finds a Hillborne for sale... but what
year, what design?

Anyway, enough words from me. I do love the Rivendell bikes I have and
certainly agree with almost all of the vision behind the designs, the steel
frames, the handling, the quality, the notion that someone should be able
to work on and customize their own bike. But still...

Let it be known though that I love the fact you found Rivendell and ride
your bikes like you do! Thanks for the riding, the reports, the bike
decorating, all of it!

Best to you this new year,

Bob Lovejoy

Not to say the rider's bike is not artful because it is. With a disc up

work going on. Oh, and I am assuming low trail(!), though planing would

[RBW] Re: PSA: NY Craigslist 59cm Romulus Cantilever Version, 700c wheels, $900 complete bike

2019-11-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I was thinking this was a 61cm frame, but that's why we have the
internet... 59cm frame based on the top tube.

For the curious I found this in Cyclofiend's great stash of pictures and
doc:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus/romflyer/04.html

I had a 61cm non-canti Romulus and it was one of my all time favorite bikes.

[RBW] Re: New 2019 frame geometry charts up on RBW's website

2019-11-19 Thread Bob Lovejoy
And the potential future Appaloosa sizing would seem to be pretty different
than the previous version, at least at first glance, most especially with
relative top tube length. I understand "just ride" but it seems harder to
me than it should to keep up with the changes, especially over the years.
Studying the correct charts and making calls to Rivendell both seem well
advised.

[RBW] Re: In praise of Pletscher single touring kickstand

2019-03-21 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Agreed... I just today installed the touring version on a 60cm Cheviot,
replacing the non-touring Pletscher, and the bike feels much more stable
when parked. I really like the fact you do not have to cut the leg, making
it both easier to get right on the length and, if you want to experiment
with it on different bikes, you can just readjust longer or shorter as
needed. It also comes with a fairly substantial rubber foot, something
that usually needed to be added to the previous versions.

I love it when upgrades actually work well on the first try!

I would absolutely vote for the 56cm/650b Atlantis, especially if you are

Not that is has anything to do with anything, but I went to the NAHBS when
it was in Denver and I talked to this "kid" (anyone under 29 qualifying)
and he had been making frames for friends in the UK. There he was in
England, but he read about the NAHBS show, and well, he decided he was to
going to make the best frame and bike he knew how, and he was going to that
show. And he did! And his bike was really well done and thought out. And
it was so cool he had done that. I am pretty sure he rode that bike to the
show from wherever he was staying in Denver, wiping it down before putting
it up on the table with, I think, a borrowed stand. He did not have cab
fare or whatever but he did have his bike. So cool... Still makes me
smile.

And it turns out he is still out there making bikes! Shed6 Cycles, as he
originally rented a storage shed to start building, and it was #6...
https://www.shed6cycles.com

So, yeah, meeting people like that just has to help and make one smile,
anyone loving bikes, riding, adventures, all of that anyway.

[RBW] Re: MIT AHH reviews?

2019-02-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Well, I have one, a 61.5cm version (me - 89pbh, saddle height 78-79cm) but
certainly lately I have been at the mercy of the snow, ice and cold that
Sean B. mentions. I did get to ride some (not enough!) before the weather
blew in, seemingly to stay.

I like it a lot! It is incredibly comfortable and I seem to have done my
guessing and math, at least for the positioning, stem length, all of that
really well. Once I am riding, the bike seems to fit perfectly. It is
supremely comfortable, handles well and predictably, and does everything
asked. I did all of my usual "let's try this" tests... charging hills
(both sitting and spinning as well as out of saddle, giving it everything),
riding in fairly tight groups, making both quick and planned turns and
evasive maneuvers, cruising for long distances... and otherwise just normal
riding. All good, and that was from day one.

That said, the Riv sizing has evolved to a place where I seem to find
myself between sizes more than I want. I am accustomed to riding frames
larger than most would recommend, as I did as a kid all the way through
college. But with 700x38's (Compass) on the Hilsen, tire size not
necessarily max'ed, sloping top tube and all, it built into a very tall
bike (maybe 34-34.5" SO just ahead of the saddle). I need to ride it more,
and I will probably adapt, but I went for a cold weather ride before real
winter set in, in bulky and probably less than athletic clothes, and I
definitely could feel the height, mostly as I dismounted. We'll see how
that goes and I am absolutely sure summer bike clothes will help. And,
like I said, once riding, the bike feels perfect. I suppose I should
mention I am 65, so not quite as flexible as some.

I will also add that the bike I was riding the most up until the AHH is a
650b conversion (62cm Katakura Silk frame). I am running 650x38 Compass
tires as well on that bike so it has been a great comparison. And the very
preliminary verdict is... I am spoiled by 650b's. They just fit my riding
a tad better, but I ride a lot in town, or in groups, and the slight edge
in maneuvering is something you get used to. The 700's probably handle the
big miles better and may be faster (for all or some), but the difference is
there. Where the 650B's jump, the 700's spin up. I want to explore that
more as I know I just need to understand the "big" 700's a little better.

With all of that, I definitely love the bike, but I would also love to ride
a 58cm (650b) back to back with mine. The reason I went to the larger
frame was primarily because I already had a great 700c wheelset I wanted to
use. Also, Riv shows a 61.5 to be the size for an 89pbh, though that is
the lowest end of that range. But they also list figures that would make
it sound like SO on a 61.5 AHH and a 58cm Appaloosa are the same and that
does not seem to be entirely correct. I have an Appaloosa as well (700x50
Schwalbe Almotion's) and SO is a good 3/4" less.

Once the roads clear a bit I will put up pictures and a more complete
review! Sorry for all the vague words here.

Here's to an early spring?

And I would add that I found I did not need much adjustment to make a big

[RBW] Re: Roadini handlebar ideas

2019-01-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Tom,

I use MAP/Ahearne's on another bike, have used Nitto Bullmoose bars, and am
also interested in the Wavie bars once they're available.

That said, one of the adjustments I made this last year was raising my drop
bar config up some and that change made an incredible difference. I had
hurt my left arm the year before and my normal bar height (slightly below
saddle) was just too uncomfortable. With that, I raised the bar height
maybe 2-3cm (so bars a little above saddle) and it did indeed take some
pressure off the injured arm. What surprised me though was that now I felt
so much more comfortable overall, and it felt a lot more natural to use the
drops (here in the Illinois wind) which I seldom did before.

Anyway, if possible, and before changing too much, I would suggest playing
with bar height to see if it makes a difference. It's easy (assuming a
long enough stem), quickly reversible, and if it does not work well enough,
no harm and no cost in the trying.

Best of luck in the looking and the testing,

Bob

A bike tourist who came through town was riding his, heading for the west
coast (by Amtrak from Galesburg as his visa time limit was approaching),
then biking to Central and possibly South America. I still follow him on
his blog...

I have to admit I was a bit worried about him for his trip, and not
necessarily for the brakes(!), but he has done amazingly well.

2019-01-05 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Oh, and please excuse the current wiring and such. I am still
experimenting with light placement and actually changed the whole thing
around just before today's ride.

One thing of note, and I am not sure it is all that elegant, but I used one
of the rear tail light mounts (for a Clem rack) to mount a rear facing SON
taillight, there between the seat stays. I did not have room on the seat
post for mounting there and also did not want to use a rack (as adding
racks and weight are my normal approach). Anyway, it works!

Re: [RBW] Possible issue with Nitto Tallux stem and Nitto Albatross bars

2018-12-28 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Sean, are you absolutely sure of the clamp size of the stem you have? The
Albatross bars are spec'ed at 25.4 (I believe) and the Tallux stem is
available in 25.4 or 26.0. A 26.0 version would cause what you are
describing, at least without using shims. I know some stems are clearly
marked but I do not know about the Tallux.

[RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

2018-12-04 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I will just add that you could use good center pull brakes as well -
Paul's, Dia Compe GC700(?), others? I do have R559's on a 650B conversion
(with Kool Stop pads) and have been ok with those (and absolutely love the
bike!) but I will be using Paul's and Kool Stop's on my AHH. I don't
expect any problems but I don't have any data to back that up. My take is
that the longer the reach, the better the quality of the brake should be,
that translating to build quality, strength of the materials and design,
etc.

I think I remember Grant saying he thought the newly designed seat cluster
was really strong and able to take a lot, and a repeated "a lot" at that.
It seems like it should be fine but, yeah, a call to them Monday would be
a good thing.

Congrats on the new frame! It will be interesting to hear what people
think once they start building and riding. It will take me a little while
to build mine up, and the weather here in northwestern Illinois has
definitely turned toward winter, but I hope to at least get in a test ride
sometime soon.

[RBW] Re: 2018 AHH Seatpost tube size question

2018-12-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
The one they sent with the frame is indeed a 27.2 x 250.

I already had a Nitto S83 waiting (27.2 x 300) so I did not even try the
one they sent. As far as the length goes, I could be fine with a 250
(versus the 300) as I am at the very lowest end of the PBH range for the
61.5 (89cm pbh) and I only have ~14cm of seat post showing. But I wanted
the dual-bolt design and would rather have a little too much seat post
length versus pushing the limits.

I will say my 61.5 cm is building up to be a somewhat larger/taller bike
than I had visualized. It is probably going to work ok, but with 700x38
tires, it is a tall bike, even with a sloping top tube.

2018-12-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I just got my frame, a 61.5/700c and it uses a 27.2 seat post. Based on
what you are saying, I would think a call would be in order to Rivendell as
I think there was a mix-up. If you have access to a 27.2 post, in your
parts stash or from another bike, it would be a useful test to try that!

I think the spec called for a 27.2 and I never saw any mention of that
changing between frame sizes.

[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I'll add that time and an associated increased cost could be major factors.
From the perspective of "older" to "newer", there is the Appaloosa ($1300)
to the Hillborne ($1400) to the latest Hilsen ($1500). I know the Cheviot
could be considered an outlier in that logic, and in several ways, but it
does seem to me that the prices are increasing, at least to some degree,
just based on time and costs.

That said, I would love to know about tubing changes or specs that add to
the cost, not that there is anything wrong that I know of with the older
tubing. I have a new Hilsen frame coming this next week so it will be
interesting to see (and ride once I get it built and the weather
cooperates) how it feels compared to other bikes.

[RBW] Re: Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-06 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks John,

It is both a little frustrating and even kind of funny how hard it can be
to figure out all of the variations, in the models and sub-models, in the
"market speak" labels, etc. I do truly like Schwalble tires and,
considering how long I have used them, it seems I should know more! But
every time I look at their site, it is like it's the first time except for
maybe the basic models that have lasted. I do love the options and the
improvements! Still, a flowchart or history or better summaries would be
helpful.

Let us know if the new tires arrive and perform as expected! I use
Supreme's on one city/errand/touring bike but am considering Almotion's for
a more dedicated tourer. I will say I went with 700x50(?) Mondials one
time (still have them) and they seemed really heavy for anything other than
true outback touring. I can see where Schwalbe might be trying to provide
lighter weight options within the model lines.

Thanks for the help and the info,

Bob

Hi John,

Do you have or can you point me to more information on the non-tubeless
Almotions you ordered? I am looking at the Schwalbe site now but it seems
to imply all of the Almotions are tubeless compatible. I have no need for
tubeless, at least on my current wheels, and the tubeless tires seem to be
a bit harder to mount. I don't mind that at home but on the road could be
different.

I don't know the odds, but if you tell people your city/town/basic region,
it could be there might be one near you, either owned or for sale, that you
could test ride. It is just an idea but there are Clementine/L's out there
and there is nothing like actually riding a bike before purchase. That

[RBW] Re: Building out New Old Stock 2009 Sam Hillborne

2018-09-05 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I can't speak to the saddle bag issue but be aware the design of the Sam
seems to have changed over the years. I think the earlier versions
possibly had a bias for swept back handlebars as well as maybe some other
changes (versus the current Sam). I could be wrong on that though.

Comparing the geometry charts is always interesting to me, just to see how
bikes evolve:

Older versions:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gfiN1kOxVrthdc6eScUF9fP5n-BvRBILbBMYiEg5LM4/edit#gid=0

Current versions:
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

I think your 89.5pbh would put you on a current 58cm Sam but I do not know
the recommendations from the previous years.

Just for reference and planning...

Bob

[RBW] Re: silver shifter adapter for Paul thumbies

Jason,

The first/top ones I believe. I do have some but they are needed for a
build. That said, if I find extras in the parts stash, I will let you
know. I did call Paul's at one point to see if they had them directly but
they sent me back to Rivendell in my search. Hopefully they will make
another batch and be offered again.

[RBW] Re: Wheelset for '84 Trek 720

2018-08-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I would verify that the existing wheels are 700c. The early 80's Trek
720's were, I believe, spec'ed with 27" wheels. If it uses caliper brakes
(which I have seen on some 728's), then it could be no problem. If his 720
has cantilevers, a conversion from 27" to 700c is possible but can make
brake choice an issue.

Might be worth verifying what is on there now. I do have some very nice,
well built 36h, 126mm 700c wheels if you want more specifics.

Thanks,

Bob

[RBW] Re: MIT AHH - When Available?

2018-07-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
First, I will say I deeply appreciate and respect the ability to pick up a
phone, call Rivendell with just about any question, know I will end up
talking to someone that wants to be helpful and will be glad, at least
truly ok, that I called. I have never had a bad experience calling and
even got to talk for awhile with Grant when he answered the phone once...
highlight of my day! Heck, here I am still talking about it!

That said... If the phone is the only or best way to get good information,
then I worry. Actually, I don't worry, as I have decided I can only worry
about so much, and I trust the people at Riv to run their business, design
and build their bikes, do what is needed. If it is real enough to be real,
known enough to be known, I assume it will be communicated... and I will
read every word, look at every picture. But, if not communicated out
publicly, I assume things are still being decided, schedules are not known,
details are still to be worked out, problems still to be resolved... and so
I do not barge in, I try not to waste anyone's time.

I do sincerely believe that Rivendell would be well served by having an
official communications person, a true point of contact, the reader and
responder of the e-mails, the asker of questions to others when needed,
someone who could know as much as there is to know about all things
Rivendell... and they would communicate and post fairly regularly, and I
would know my questions would not be keeping them from other work, because
that would be their main mission, even their passion, to let people know,
participate, plan, and get excited... and to help Rivendell not only
survive but to thrive.

Ok, enough words as it is time to find the COG group (Cyclists of
Galesburg!) and ride on this amazingly beautiful morning! Hope the day
for everyone is a good one.

[RBW] Re: PSA Ram on Ebay

2018-06-19 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Not that is important but this frame was listed by the seller previously
and, in theory, sold (May 26). I am thinking the buyer did not follow
through with either payment or was not able to figure out the local pickup,
probably the latter.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rambouillet-By-Rivendell-Bicycle-Works-Bike-Frame-RB0952-C-T-27-Local-P-U-Only/401540053071?hash=item5d7da6f84f:g:EbwAAOSwm8NbAFnD

The large frame size definitely only applies to a few, but it could be a
great deal for someone who fits the bike. That said, I am thinking the
local pickup condition is most likely real. Anyway, something happened
with the original deal...

I would say keep the bike listed for whatever you want/need to sell it for
but add the "make offer" option. You can always say no... Searching for
completed listings on Ebay through the advanced search is also another way
to determine what people have previously paid there (or not). There is

[RBW] Re: New geometry charts available

2018-05-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Tom,

Thanks for doing those measurements on your Sam! I have been paying
particular attention to stack height on potential frames and knowing the
real, even if approximate, figure on a 58cm Sam really helps. I need to
measure my 58cm Joe to see how it figures in. The 2017 chart shows stack
height on a 58cm Sam vs Joe to be about the same but it will be interesting
to find out if reality matches spreadsheets or comes close to what you
measured.

I am not truly fixated on all of this, as I do just like to ride and forget
about it. That said, I want any build I take on, especially these days, to
have a better than even chance of working as I need it to. I also want to
know, at least have some basis to think I know, how one frame might fit
differently than another. Without the chance to actually see and ride the
different bikes, out here away from big bike shops, I have to rely on
descriptions, comparisons, numbers, intuition and reports from others.
So, yes... thanks!

[RBW] Re: New geometry charts available

2018-05-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I do think there are are typos and/or oddities in the geometry charts,
though, who knows, maybe with certain center pull brakes 55mm is possible.
I think you are certainly right about the Tektro sidepulls though. I get
the impression that more goes into the recommended PBH/sizing chart than
the actual geometry chart numbers. I have not been mislead when using
Riv's PBH recommendations but going deeper into the geometry numbers is not
always the fun or even useful thing one imagines.

For reference, and maybe it is still there in the current mix, but here is
the geometry chart from 2017:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170602082329/https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

As far as really previous Sam geometries go, I cannot find the chart now
but I believe top tubes were relatively longer in the v1's, that to better
work with swept/upright bars.

Brent,

Thanks for doing that! I think the Sam numbers in the new chart were
changed after the initial posting, as the 58cm Sam had a listed ETT of 61.5
(I think). That has been changed to 60, still a bit longer than the 59cm
listed previously but I have no reason to believe it wrong.

And, yes, you are a lucky guy! I have two Riv's, an Appaloosa and a
Cheviot, but still with Hillborne and/or Atlantis aspirations.

Thanks again for the report and the measuring.

[RBW] Re: New geometry charts available

2018-05-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I have a 58cm Appaloosa and from my basic measurements, I am going to say
that the new listings (on the updated frame geometry page) for it seem
correct (61.5 tt, 64.5 front center, 53cm chain stays).

The actual page for the Appaloosa frame shows a chart with different
numbers (59.7 tt) but I believe that is actual/physical top tube length and
not the effective/level length, taking into account the sloping top tube..
That seems to me the discrepancy, at least with the Appaloosa numbers. I
could be wrong but I think that there were some, way back when, that took
those numbers from the Appaloosa page, assumed top tube length as stated
was the effective length and made some decisions that, well, did not always
work out.

That is about the only question I can help answer though! But I really am
curious about the Sam numbers. I suspect the new ones are off, though I
guess it could be speculated that the new AHH becomes the drop bar, road
bike, with the Sam going back to its swept/upright bar roots. The
Appaloosa and the new Atlantis? I can only see them as different
approaches to the same goal, and may the better bike win... though no real
winners and losers. Both great bikes!

[RBW] Re: New geometry charts available

2018-05-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I do agree... It helps me as well, at least I believe it does!

Also, the Sam H. numbers looks off to me. It shows the 58cm Sam with a
61.5cm (effective?) top tube, the same as the Appaloosa. That would
definitely be a change if correct.

Also, in reference to iamkeith's post... It seems I remember two different
sets of geometry numbers around for the Appaloosa. I just concentrated on
the one I thought correct but I did cringe at the potential for confusion.

I think a good deal for someone, especially with the parts included,

It may be awhile before my catalog/brochure tracks me down... For those

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
+1 to what Patrick says... I know I prefer a little too large of a frame
rather than a little too small. That said, other (younger and racier)
folks prefer the opposite. Still, I would be leaning to the 61 though the
conversation with people at Riv should be really helpful. If they have a
demo 61 built, it could be they would set the saddle height, maybe measure
few other things and send you info and pics?

There is also a picture of a 57cm Roadini somewhere here...
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rbw-owners-bunch/YrobKUozAHk/koR_zTiRAgAJ

It is a 57cm with, I believe was reported, saddle height at 76cm

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I do not have anything very useful to add but I am also at or around that
89 pbh number, usually have a 78cm saddle height and have studied (studied
being a little overstated) the Roadini numbers.

Like you said, the reach difference, as far as I can tell, is minimal, at
least workable. I will say the mid-tube top tube height is ~34.12" (right
at my theoretical limit) on the 61, which might be fine or maybe not... The
57cm shows to be ~32.56cm mid top tube (lower than I would like). Also, I
believe the Roadini has a relatively high stack, and my very amateurish
calculations came out as 630mm for the 57, 671mm for the 61. Someone
please correct that as needed as I would love to know the true numbers.

Anyway, I am very curious if others report or if you get more information
from Rivendell!

For now, I have decided to not decide. I had opted for a Sam (58cm) but
delays and life timing happened (a house sale and move, then travel) so I
ended up cancelling that for now. We shall see...

Let us know of anything you find or hear!

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-04-30 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Agreed... I think that is why I cling to the older style frames, though I
am tiring of the chase there. I just measured my favorite (road) bike, a
650B conversion that works incredibly well, and it is 62cm ST (ctc) with a
57cm level TT, 10cm Nitto stem... If it ever came to that, lottery
winnings in hand(!), I might just send it off to a builder and ask them to
build me the same bike, with only a few more braze-ons and a few minor
tweaks.

That said, the Rivendell bikes have always worked really well for me, not
that I have had that many, and never the Waterford or custom versions. My
Appaloosa is a a truly excellent bike, a little heavy with my touring build
but that's mostly on me. I had a Romulus that I still miss (a 61cm).

I totally agree on the effective TT length and reach being really
important. I have bikes sized between 58-63cm (ST) but they all fall
between 58-60cm TT. Well, the Appaloosa does not, but a 6cm stem brought
the bars back in. And I will say the newer, sloping top tube Riv's help
get a level bars/saddle height balance that I prefer.

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-04-30 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Eamon,

Seems like 89-90pbh is somewhat the new dividing line in the recent sizing,
at least with the Roadini, Homer, Atlantis, the Appaloosa and Clem H. I
have an 89pbh as well, ride a 58cm Appaloosa, and am thinking (maybe very
fuzzy, optimistic thinking) I would want a 61.5cm Homer as primarily a road
bike, with a little gravel thrown in, with the caveat that I prefer a
slightly larger frame (relative to the norm) versus slightly smaller. I
would also probably run 700x38's, hopefully knocking the max SO height down
just a fraction.

Facts, pictures and others' experiences could certainly push me the other
way. I'll keep watching, reading, and hoping at least a few more
measurements make it out to the masses.

A great looking bike though... I will be excited to hear more!

[RBW] Re: Tucson Stolen Bike Alert

2018-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Matt,

Really and truly sorry to hear of the break-in and theft. I have been
trying so hard to maintain some semblance of faith in people but that is
obviously not easy. I hope it all works out as well as possible.

In moments of weakness (for looking at bikes), I use SearchTempest to scan
Craiglist's from across the country. I know you will have much to do with
everything else but it might be worth trying at times.

https://www.searchtempest.com/

You can set how much distance from where you are to search. I run it in
Chrome, with the "Direct Results" option checked. I also had to tell
Chrome to allow the site to open multiple windows but it has worked well
for me. I am not sure how it would work if you found your bikes on a
different city's CL but a call to their police department would seem like
the next step.

I would also make sure as many of your local bikes shops as possible are
aware of the theft and have the info and hopefully pictures. Even if
someone buys it cheaply, not knowing the truth about it, the bike(s) could
end up in a shop for repair or whatever.

People here will be in the lookout. Let us know of any updates. Again,
sorry you are having to go through all of that.

[RBW] People and places and thoughts...

2018-04-22 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I keep links to people and places and things, though I know they may have
been quiet for awhile, even quite awhile. Keeping the links seems
important though, bread crumbs in their way, back to times, back to wild

Anyway, in my morning ramblings, I found that Kent Peterson, a hero in my
way of thinking of heroes, had updated his blog with a poem subtitled "a
rant for Grant". And so it is... I know some people know of Kent and will
appreciate not only the words but the re-finding...

remembered and looked for nevertheless?

2018-04-18 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Brian,

I did re-listen to those podcasts and will warn they are a little dry
unless the history of things, most especially bicycles, is of true
interest. They comprise almost entirely of an interview with Tony Hadland,
the knower and keeper of much history. I enjoyed them (again!) but there
were a lot of names and developments to keep track of. Also, be warned
that to have the rise and fall and history of such a great marque presented
in an hour or so of listening can be a little disconcerting.

That said, the intro to the program came straight out of the video so a
good segue...

I remember there was at least one edition of "The Bike Show" where Jack
biked through the old Raleigh grounds with someone who knew of all the old
buildings and such. It was great fun listening

2018-04-14 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks for posting this... As a follow-up, Jack Thurston did a 2-part set
of podcasts (The Bike Show) that discuss the history of Raleigh and the
factory.

http://thebikeshow.net/raleigh-part-one-rise/
http://thebikeshow.net/raleigh-part-two-fall/

I have not listened to those shows in awhile, so cannot talk specifics, but
I always remembered listening and being taken back to those days.

For what it is worth, in the video, it shows a frame coming down from the
line with the Rudge name on the seat tube, a name I knew was associated
with Raleigh. There was a little more information here though:

http://www.classicrendezvous.com/British_isles/Rudge_main.htm

I think I will spend part of this somewhat wet, dreary midwest day
listening again to those podcasts!

I may have missed them. They would be great to see though and could be
compared against the other Riv models, as well as other frames.

2018-04-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
If I were taller, I think I would just have to find a way to buy this
bike... I admit to being partial to that silver but, still... I think it is
an absolutely beautiful bike, with a real world, classy, yet well thought
out and useful build, the perfect explorer for the taller in the crowd.
Someone will be very lucky indeed.

I love your other choices in the Cheviot and Rambler as well. As they
say... you chose well!

Anyway, a bump and GLWS.

[RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-06 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I am still looking over the geometry but the sloping top tube probably
makes it look even more different than it really is.

That said, the sizing came out different than I expected (not a bad/good
thing...).

For instance, I would fit a 61cm (Waterford) Atlantis, 59cm TT (eff), 700c
wheels, standover 85.1cm
On a new MIT Atlantis, the equivalent (TT anyway) would seem to be: 56cm
frame, 59cm TT (eff), 650B wheels, standover 83.5cm

Both bikes max at 55mm?

Anyway, interesting! I bet it will be a great bike but I will be studying
the geometry more just to learn... Also, the numbers I am looking at are
from the Riv geometry charts and not personally known or verified.

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-30 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Tom. Any help appreciated but certainly do not take time away from
anything important! It's just that I will someday have a 58cm Sam, and
will have an Acorn tall rando bag waiting for it. I will certainly
measure everything numerous times, then still worry that it is right, but
your set-up looks almost exactly the way I imagine mine will work out. I
do love the orange versions, and with the cream headtube and the tan
sidewalls, it looks perfect. I have to say I also love the lush green
grass and leaves in the picture! Winter and early spring are really
hanging on here in the midwest.

Thanks for any help!

Great looking bike!

Because I really like the Acorn bag folks, and to keep me from buying
another one myself, I will say Acorn shows at least one black tall rando
bag available. I am amazed it still shows available but there it is.

Do you remember the size of the Berthoud decaleur you are using with the
Acorn? No worries if not but if you do know, it would help.

[RBW] Re: Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-29 Thread Bob Lovejoy
+1 - what Bill said...

I love the idea, I love the possibilities! But those wheels, sitting there
in the corner or hung on hooks, they can call out to you... I heard someone
state that almost any cool bike part can have that effect but wheels, in my
experience, are the worst... or the best certainly to be treated with
great respect, logic and discipline. Kind of reminds me of that "you can
have any two out of the three". Indeed!

Re: [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Agreed, excellent summation!

Hopefully it is ok with Eamon to use his notes when studying for the
test... I am thinking there is going to be a test, just has to be... right?

Anyway, I do applaud Riv for sticking to its design convictions and
direction. I kind of wish I needed the new Atlantis! But my Appaloosa is
working really well for me. That said, I do look forward to studying the
new catalog, the next chapter in a story I truly like and follow.

[RBW] Re: [podcast] Higher, Faster, Rougher, Wilder

2018-03-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Slightly on and off topic, all at the same time... apologies if needed.

I have been using "Pocket Casts" for the last few months for my podcast app
and have been totally impressed and satisfied. It keeps almost perfect
coordination between my Mac and phone (from a listening and download
standpoint), enables continuous play, working its way through multiple
podcasts, something really handy on long walks, etc. It does cost a few
dollars, but only a few, for the phone app as well as the website (which
enables, I think, the level of coordination between devices).

That said, it ranks near the top of my list for value per dollar spent
lately. For those fighting with the standard podcast apps, or people who
listen on the desktops, then head out to listen on the move, it really
works well. One caveat, obviously to store more than a few podcasts on a
phone takes storage, so that should be watched. That said, Pocket Casts is
no worse (and probably no better) than other apps I have used.

Not affiliated in any way other than I am glad I found it!

Bob
