Re: [RBW] Re: flat pedals, thin pedals, long pedals

2016-04-01 Thread Eric Norris
Arches support the load by distributing the forces to the ends of the arch, not
the middle. I suspect feet (which are a natural arch structure) operate on the
same principle. In the case of the foot, the two "ends" are the heel and the
ball of the foot.

In the same vein, this is why saddles like the Brooks B17 support the weight of
your body on the natural arches in your pelvis, not on a more sensitive area
between them ...

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Eric Norris
I had a SineWave on a former bike, and as Howard said it doesn’t draw very much
power at all unless there’s something plugged into it. Based on my experience
(with a Shimano dyno hub), the SineWave works best all by itself. Running an
Edelux light and using the SineWave to charge at the same time reduces the
brightness of the headlight. Charge your phone during the day when the lights
are off.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone have a good rule of thumb for chain tension for an ENO single speed?

2016-03-20 Thread Eric Norris
Keep in mind that when you're riding the tension on the chain will make it a
little more slack. I adjust mine to be a tiny bit tighter than I want when it's
in the work stand. While pedaling, the chain will be properly tensioned.

Also, single speed setups aren't as sensitive to chain tension as fixed gear
bikes. You can get away with much less tight chain because you're not going to
use backpressure at all.

Re: [RBW] IQ-X Headlight

2016-03-20 Thread Eric Norris
My IQ-X does seems flash a bit more at very low speeds than my other LED dyno
lights. I attribute that to the brighter LED, which probably requires a little
more power to light up.

Anyway, we’re talking walking speed here—get on the bike and start riding and
the headlight lights up like any other at a very slow riding speed.

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

2016-03-15 Thread Eric Norris
The frame will only sit on the ends of the axles for as long as it takes to
tighten the quick release. From that point on, the quick release holds the
wheel in place. #sheldonwasright

FWIW, many mechanics don’t know this. I took my Singer to a local shop that
specializes in high-end custom bikes, and they were shocked (shocked!) at the
very small amount of axle extending beyond the cones on the rear wheel. I
explained that the had been like that for more than a decade, but they were
still incredulous. Later that year, I took the bike on a 400Km brevet, a 600,
and PBP.

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

2016-03-14 Thread Eric Norris
FWIW, the Maxicar rear hub that has been on my Singer since the day it was
built was originally made for narrower spacing, but was modified at the Singer
shop to fit a more modern frame—with the original axle. There is perhaps 2mm of
threading extending past the locknuts on either side. It doesn’t look like it
would work, but it does, and it has for thousands of miles.

The lesson I learned from this is that the frame doesn’t sit on the axle.
Rather, the wheel is held in place by the force of the quick release squeezing
the dropouts between the skewer and the locknuts. The very small amount of
threading on my rear wheel is basically there to align the wheel; the quick
release does the rest.

I could buy a longer Maxicar replacement axle and have it installed at a
specialty shop (like Boulder Bicycles) familiar with this particular French
brand, but I decided long ago that there is no need to do this.

So … perhaps you *can* make your hub work simply by adding spacers.

Berthoud bags are expensive, but I’ve never regretted buying one. They look an
work great, and will last forever. I sold one that had been used on and off for
ten years on a bicycle I bought last year, and it sold on eBay for half the
price of a new bag, which shows how well they hold their value.

Note that you’ll need a decaleur—there are many sources for those, including

Re: [RBW] Re: How to Determine the "Correct" Tire Pressure?

2016-03-10 Thread Eric Norris
What the Deacon said.

I had a low-speed crash a few years ago that was caused by an unintentional
experiment in low tire pressure (a slow leak). As I was making a turn, my front
wheel squirmed around so much that I lost control and went down.

I can also notice too-low pressure when I'm riding on the streets straddling
painted pavement lines. Going up and down the slightly raised lines feels funny
(which usually alerts me to the fact that I need to fix another leak).

Excessive squirminess is the downside (for me) to running large-volume tires at
low pressures.

Re: [RBW] Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-06 Thread Eric Norris
OK, let me say first of all that I’m not an expert and *not* a metallurgist.

However … yes, that looks like a crack to me, but I’m not sure I’d be worried
about a catastrophic failure anytime soon.

Not being an expert, I’m trying to puzzle out what the stresses are on the head
tube, and I can’t think of any like those that would affect, say, the bottom of
the seat or down tubes, where you have a lot of forces and torsion from the
drivetrain. Yes, there must be some forces there, but not as concentrated.

I would watch the crack and see if it spreads any further. Any reasonably
skilled framebuilder can put a new head tube in, but with repainting you’re
going to be looking at several hundred dollars worth of fixing.

Let us know how it works. As I said, I love tech—maybe I can be convinced.

Have you seen the product that puts a rear-facing video cam on your bike? I

Re: [RBW] Geeky stuff I find quite helpful - my bike now has a rear radar!

2016-03-01 Thread Eric Norris
Rene:

Glad this is working for you. I’m an early-adopted-tech-geek through and
through, but I must admit this particular product exceeds even my desire to
load my bike down with electronics.

I get that you ride with “headphones”—I do this myself, but I would never use
in-ear phones that block all outside noise *or* listen to music at a volume
that blocks out all exterior sounds. You decide how you want to ride, but I
think it’s dangerous to be out on the road without one of your most important
senses (hearing) working properly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to
take evasive action on the bike trail as the result of other riders (and
runners) who can’t hear anything buy their music.

Regarding electric vehicles—even here in California, they’re a very small part
of the fleet, and in my experience that share drops even farther on low-volume
country roads (except for perhaps Marin County, where the local residents drive
their Teslas out into the country a bit more than in, say, Kern County).

My solution for knowing what’s happening behind me is to use my ears and a
helmet-mounted mirror. Cheap, effective, and neither one needs to be recharged.

Re: [RBW] A Singer in my size available! But....

2016-02-23 Thread Eric Norris
Nice frame, although the price seems a bit steep for a frame and a few odds and
ends. The Singer stem is a plus, but there’s a lot missing that would make the
frame more worthy of the asking price. I see the braze-on for the remote
actuator for a bottle generator on the left side seatstay, but the carefully
machined lever and the generator are missing, as is the taillight that probably
came with the bike. It’s also lacking a few other details: braze-ons for the
Mafac brakes, the fillet-brazed head tube.

But these are minor issues. This is a Singer, and if it rides like mine you
will fall in love with it. If I had to divest myself of all but one bike, my
Singer would probably be the one. It’s just an amazing machine. You won’t
regret having it.

Regarding sourcing parts: My somewhat later Singer (serial #, built around
2003) uses standard sizes and threading as far as I know. The BB is standard
British threading, and the stem (yes, made in the Singer shop) has a standard,
not French, quill diameter.

I haven’t really considered selling it, but I’m not riding it and I may let it

I don’t want to disassemble the bike for shipping, so this would be for pickup

Re: [RBW] 2 things: (1) WTB/WTT good quality, silver forged calipers; (2) QB/SO for FM hub?

Should be easy—put 3mm worth of spacers on each side of the axle and slip it
into the frame. QB (and I suppose the S1) have 120mm “fixie” spacing, so you
need to add 6mm of washers to make it fit perfectly.

My apologies … bars are actually 26.0mm. Perhaps this is good news for those
Noodle-lovers out there who didn’t want 25.4?

Still $45 shipped in the CONUS.

Re: [RBW] The joys of modern lighting... we've come a long way!

2016-02-11 Thread Eric Norris
Ryan:

The problem, I believe, is more from the design of modern lights than the
brightness. By and large, the lights you can buy in US—and this includes pretty
much every LED light on the market—throw out a cone of light that shines up and
much as it shines down. It might be “focused,” but it’s still a cone.

German-made lights like the Edelux, on the other hand, focus their light to
shine mostly down on the road, where it needs to be. Light shining up and
toward other riders is minimized. Modern cars work the same way—point your car
at a garage door or a wall and you’ll usually see pretty sharp cutoff line with
light below and dark above. There’s no reason why a light can’t be bright *and*
non-blinding.

But it’s much easier to build a reflector that creates cone-shaped light, which
is probably why most lights do this. German regulations, in particular, don’t
allow this, which is why Edelux and other German-approved lights are better
focused.

This state of affairs probably won’t change until US regulators get around to
adopting regulations like those in Europe, and I haven’t heard of any movement
in this direction.

Re: [RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-06 Thread Eric Norris
Unfortunately, light rail is still years away from going to the airport. Your
best bet would be a taxi or Uber to get downtown … and once you get there, the
transit choices are going to be far less that what you’re used to in Toronto.
You’ll need to walk a lot or check the bus schedules to get around town.

Getting from Sacramento to SF is easier. You can take Amtrak from the downtown
station to Richmond and connect with BART, which goes right into downtown San
Francisco (where you’ll find more familiar transit options). There’s a BART
stop fairly close to Rivendell—check their system maps and timetables online.

That being said, I’ve heard from people who have used SP hubs for extended

Uh … yeah, it will. There’s the SineWave charger, available as an aftermarket
item, and the B Luxos light, which has as an option a USB charging port built
into its remote switch.

Some dynos may struggle to run the lights *and* the USB charger at the same
time, but the workaround there is to charge stuff during the day while your

Re: [RBW] Re: Dyno light recommendation

2016-01-29 Thread Eric Norris
Actually, the storage capacity of batteries isn’t getting better—it has pretty
much leveled off. This is a major topic of conversation in the high tech
industry, particularly with regard to cell phones—this is why there is such a
debate over the merits of thinner, lighter phones vs slightly heavier, thicker
phones with more battery life. Batteries are all about chemistry, and the
lithium rechargeable battery you buy today isn’t much different from the one
you could get a few years ago. There is no “Moore’s Law” of batteries.

Dyno hubs have also leveled off somewhat, although a Shutter Precision hub is
markedly lighter and runs with less drag than a top-of-the-line Schmidt hub
from a few years ago. I know—I have both. The SP hub I took to PBP last year is
a much better piece of engineering than the Schmidt hubs I used in ’07 and ’11.

The much more dramatic and important improvements have been in LED lighting.
The good (halogen) lighting system I used at PBP in ’07 literally pales in
comparison to today’s LED lights. Nighttime riding is so much safer and more
comfortable now—and the ability to run LED lights in the daytime with a
low-drag dyno hubs helps make daytime riding safer, too.

For short rides or commutes, rechargeable battery-powered lights are a great
option. On the rando circuit, my general sense is that the people who use them
are riding bikes that weren’t made for randonneuring, with battery-powered
lights thrown on almost as an afterthought. Pretty much every serious
randonneur I know (including me) uses a dyno lighting system.

Have you tried putting the old skewer back in?

FYI, one of my SP hubs is held in with a older-style QR skewer, the other with
a threaded type that requires an Allen wrench. No movement on either one over

Re: [RBW] Mystery Science Question

2016-01-27 Thread Eric Norris
I have SP hubs on two bikes, and have never had this happen. Are you sure the
quick release is tight enough? I'm not sure why the connector would rotate
backwards like this, but that's the first thing I would check.

I'm also concerned that your front wheel isn't sitting in the fork ends
correctly. Based on your photos, it looks like it's a few millimeters out from
where it should be. I'd look into that as well--perhaps the springs on the
skewer are somehow preventing the wheel from fully engaging in the fork ends,
which might have something to do with the rotation?

Had it not been for the StuffBack sticker on the computer, the police would

Richard Sachs was the same way (still is, but for a very limited number of

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting Simple One mod into "touring/cx" bike

2015-12-28 Thread Eric Norris
I use Sturmey-Archer's S3X hub, which has a reasonably wide range, coupled with
a spin-on singlespeed freewheel to allow coasting. The top gear (3rd) is direct
drive (the most efficient on any IGH), and the bottom gear (1st) is about 60%
of top. With a 72-inch top gear, that puts the lowest gear at about 43 inches,
which is low enough for me for all but the steepest pitches.

I've done a lot of riding on 3-speed equipped bikes, including my venerable
(first gen) Quickbeam, which I converted from a fixed gear several years ago.
Only very seldom have I had to resort to the 24-inch gear (two feet).

Remember that, back in the day, bikes with 3-speed IGHs were much more common,

Re: [RBW] "Stop pulling up on your pedals"

2015-12-11 Thread Eric Norris
I put a pair of standard clipless pedals (Crank Bros) on my Brompton. For
day-to-day folding this doesn’t cause a problem. If I need to put it in a case,
I just have to remove the non-drive pedal, which of course no longer folds.
Takes a few seconds.

I'm familiar with the arguments in favor of flat pedals, but I just find

Re: [RBW] Rivendell's Thinny Gloves Review

2015-12-04 Thread Eric Norris
I haven’t tried these gloves, but I’ll put in my two cents’ worth for thin
gloves. I started using non-padded gloves a couple of years ago, and found
almost by accident that they helped tremendously with the numbness issues I had
been experiencing on long rides (600K and 1200K). I find that having gloves
that add grip but not padding let me hold onto the bars more easily, and that
having a firm grip on the bars makes a big difference in long term comfort.
Padding makes it harder to grip the bars because I can’t close my fingers
around them as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: Smart Guys: Bicycle Helmets Reduce Injuries

2015-11-24 Thread Eric Norris
Not that cycling is that dangerous, but I'd like to see the data showing that
"walking on the street" is more dangerous than riding a bike. On a personal
level, I've lost several friends/acquaintances over the past year, killed by
motor vehicles while riding their bikes. I can't think of a single incident
among my friends, fatal or otherwise, that happened while they were "walking on
the street."

"Nicely said Eric.I too wear a helmet every time I'm on my bike! I definitely
advocate wearing helmets for any type of riding. I worked in transplantation

Re: [RBW] Re: Smart Guys: Bicycle Helmets Reduce Injuries

2015-11-23 Thread Eric Norris
Ok. I guess I mentally separated the results--a helmet protects your head when
it hits the ground--from their suggestion that it would be a good idea to
require the use of helmets. The former seems to be to be a fact-based
conclusion, the latter an opinion.

Re: [RBW] Re: Smart Guys: Bicycle Helmets Reduce Injuries

2015-11-22 Thread Eric Norris
There is risk in pretty much everything we do in life. As you point out, unless
compelled to do otherwise by laws, we all assess and respond to those risks in
different ways. I didn’t see the article as saying that bicycling is risky (a
high rate of accidents), just that wearing a helmet can reduce the incidence of
injuries if your head hits the ground.

And yes, people injure their heads by slipping in the shower. And yes, if we
all wore a helmet in the shower we could probably avoid some injuries. That
ignores that fact that wearing a helmet would interfere with a common part of
showering: the washing of one’s hair. Wearing a bicycle helmet doesn’t
interfere with anything I’m doing on a bike.

P.S. Sorry for dipping my toe into this debate. Flame on!

[RBW] Retro Electronics

I know some of the folks on this list like “retro” stuff, so here’s something I
spotted on my ride today:

https://flic.kr/p/ALzm8c <https://flic.kr/p/ALzm8c>

I used to own one of these back in the early 80s—in fact, I think it was my
first cyclocomputer. It was simple, and it only allowed you to input a handful
of wheel sizes (not the exact diameter of your wheels), but it was a sturdy
little unit. Still, I’m surprised to see one actually in use—certainly a
testament to the robust design from CatEye’s engineers.

Re: [RBW] Neo Light

2015-11-09 Thread Eric Norris
This looks like it works on the same principle as the Magnic Lights, which I’ve
been using for several years. Magnic just came out with Ver. 2 of their
product, which added new circuitry for a steadier and brighter light.

No friction!? Absolutely true. There is no contact between the Magnic light and
the bike, other than the mount. The system generates energy from the motion of
the (alloy or steel) rims passing by the light.

I have one of the new headlights, but I haven’t had time to use it. The first
gen lights aren’t nearly as bright as, say, an Edelux, but for me they’re
certainly bright enough to ride with. They’re also always on, adding the
benefit of daytime running lights.

Despite the protests of skeptics, I would say that the lights have no effect on
the bike’s speed. If there is, I can’t feel it. Yes, you don’t get something
(light) for nothing, but the Magnic Lights come very, very close.

P.S. The inventor of the Magnic Light is currently fighting several patent
battles with other companies using the “eddy technology.” This might be one of
them.

P.P.S. Magnic Lights are available in the USA from Clever Cycles in Portland OR.

Re: [RBW] Neo Light

2015-11-09 Thread Eric Norris
The lights have a rotating ring of small, very strong magnets in them, which
think are somehow turning in response to the wheel going by them, but I’m not
sure.

As I said, in the real world, on real bikes, I can’t feel any kind of drag from
these lights. My guess is that they’re much more efficient than a standard hub
or bottle generator, which has much larger physical parts that are rotated by
the motion of the bike and, in the case of a bottle generator, friction between
the tire and the generator. The drag must be measurable, but it’s not
perceptible to me.

Hold up the front wheel on a Magnic-equipped light and spin it … it just spins,
like the lights weren’t there. Even a very efficient hub generator, with the
lights off, doesn’t spin as easily.

Re: [RBW] Need a Carradice leather strap.

2015-11-04 Thread Eric Norris
What color and length do you need? I have a white strap that came with my zip
roll that I don't need.

Re: [RBW] Re: Richard Sachs

2015-11-04 Thread Eric Norris
AFAIK, Richard has stopped taking "new" orders for frames. He has a multi-year
backlog that he's working through, and he will do repairs on existing RS
frames, but other than that you won't be able to get a new frame.

All in all, a very enviable place for him to be.
