RE: [RCSE] Spektrum Range Test *********

2006-10-10 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign

If you're having issues
with your heli's, the problem is most likely in the heli
itself...

Depending on the
model/mfgr of the heli, these are ALL things that I (or my customers) have
encountered that have caused radio issues.

  bad bearings

  broken struts

  cracked
  sideframes

  excess
  vibration

  loose wiring

  bad
connectors

  loose screws allowing vibration
  btwn parts

  Worn McDaniels Remote Headlock
  used with Enya plugs

  etc...
Seriously, I would check
the heli first before I tried another radio. 2nd...DO NOT use PCM Rx's until you
resolve the issue(s) because, IMHO, they "mask" the problem. Stick with PPM
and use a decent glitch counter to help you isolate the issues. None of my
heli's fly PCM!!! And yes, I'm the same Sheldon that supports the US
Soaring NATs, and sells the BC6 Flight Monitor. I don't care whose detector you
choose to use, albeit the BC6 is the best one for the job, as it
was designed, for R/C Heli's, with this task in mind. Got to www.yntdesign.com and check the
specs/instructions.

the reason i had posed the question is because i was thinking of using the
Spektrum on my electric helis.

i am having issues with conventional radios on the heli, but if Spektrum is
not any better ... then i guess i might as well stick to my PCM RXs.  BUT
then again, helis are never really flown very far ...

I'm normally at the NATs, playing "Head Turnaround Toll" but I was unable to
make it this year due to my "real" job (for some reason, they just don't
understand). Please do me a favor and mention to everyone there to keep an
eye on "my Trolls" to make sure they stay safe and also, ask people to say
"thanks" to the Trolls personally...It REALLY does mean a LOT to the kids
when a pilot tells them they appreciate that they're doing such a good job
for them!

[RCSE] WNY Soaring Contest

2006-05-01 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign

Thanks to Tom
Koszuta and all of the Western New York Soaring and Electric Flyers for inviting
Reece and I to attend their contest yesterday. It's the first time I've flown
UNL in about 18 months and boy does it show! I had a great day, met a lot of
good people and will definitely be back for more contests this season. Special
thanks to Reece for all his patience & help, talking me through some tough
times, and reminding me to "breathe" !

The contest was a
very relaxed affair, with 10 pilots in attendance. We had 1 open winch and
a 40 minute window for each of the 5 rounds. The field is "interesting" as there
a quite a few thermal generators surrounding the field, and along with thermal
generators comes sink holes! Landings were a big problem for me, as usual,
although I did get 1 of my LSF II landings. Unfortunately my
1 off-field landing cost me 2nd place and I finished in 6th. I had to jump
trees twice...once I was unlucky (and almost took out Reece's Artemis which was
on the ground underneath the tree) but the other time the Sapphire looked like a
jack-in-the-box popping up over the trees not once but twice. I did have the
tallest flight of the day and if it hadn't been for Reece's eyes, I don't think
that plane would have come home.

I had some good
flights, really poor landings, but my equipment came away still able to fly, and
I had fun and came away with a lot more knowledge. Good time, good experience,
good people...What more could I ask for?

make your final setup tweaks I guess. At least
I'll have some good help between Reece, Tom, Kurt, & the rest of
the guys in Buffalo. We'll see how it goes...Hmmm, I wonder if they have
any trees anywhere within my visual range??? If so, I could be in big trouble

[RCSE] 2006 Soaring Nationals - Volunteers for Turnaround Trolls

2006-04-23 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign

Pilots,

As you are aware, we
have a group of volunteer youngsters that shag 'chutes all day long, regardless
of the weather, that are referred to as the "Turnaround Trolls". I'm trying
to find out, in advance, how many Turnaround Trolls I can plan on having on my
crew this year...

Ideally, I'm looking for
volunteers that will be able to work all 3 events - 2M, UNL, & RES
events. However, volunteers for any event are welcome, and we always manage
to work them in somehow . We try to give all the kids a
chance to participate & help out by driving a golf cart and/or being a
co-helper. However, that is dependent upon whether your child is safely able to
handle the job, and is solely at my discretion...Safety comes FIRST, as the
ground they traverse is rough, they generally travel at maximum speed in order
to help things run efficiently, and as long as you're flying...The Trolls are
retrieving 'chutes for you! I usually pair-up a smaller child with a larger one
and, so far, we haven't had any major issues during my tenure as Head Turnaround
Troll. Again, safety always comes FIRST!

Any pilots attending the 2006 Soaring Nationals, that
have youngsters that will be volunteering to be a Turnaround Troll
please send me the name, age, what days they can work, and the shirt
size your child would like so I can get an idea about the size of my
crew and let them know what we need for shirts in
advance.

TIA,

Now I know Sheldon has really been out soaring... ;-)

The low altitude downwind turn with a large RES ship was a bad decision,
should have just dumped those huge spoilers as it was flying away from you
into the wind.

The long walk of shame is better than a tree climb and/or breakage.

Sounds like Reece had a pretty good day. 8-)

19. Then all of a sudden I have rudder, but it's too late...By about 10
feet, and the Soprano is in a tree...Damn, damn, damn! (strike 6)
20. We make the hike across the field & look up...WOW! It's REALLY in
there good...flew right into the crotch of a limb that extends straight-out
into the flight path, with branches capturing it top, bottom, etc. Then we
look down, the trees are in the middle of a bog, nasty! Now there's "dry"
land on either side of the trees, but the tree itself is in the middle of
the bog! (strike 7)
21. Weight a line, trying to get it over the fuselage (maybe we can
"pull it backwards" to free it???). After MANY attempts, we do get a line
over it, but no dice, this is not going well. This is not happening!
22. Reece calls his buddy Jay (who lives on-site) and says "Hey! Get you
ass out of bed & come help us get an airplane out of a tree at the east end
of the runway!)
23. Jay shows up about 20 minutes later, looks, says "no problem", &
proceeds to walk a fallen tree to the other "dry" side.
24. Reece spies a deer stand against a tree about 50' away...Hey Jay,
wait a minute...We got a deer stand ladder down there! So we go retrieve it
and get it across to Jay. Reece says go get your radio, Jay says if he gets
to it he'll just toss it and we can fly it down...& get me a bottle of water
out of the van too.
25. Go to the van & by the time I get back, Jay is already up in the
tree & almost to the plane (How the hell did he do that???)
26. Jay is at the plane, gets it loose, & says: How hard do I have to
throw this? Reece says it takes nothin'! Jay: OK, but I'll have to throw it
with the wing on the diagonal, I can't throw it flat. Reece: Just toss it!
27. Now you have to picture Jay, perched precariously out on a (not very
substantial limb), with a 10' glider, in a 12mph wind, trying to throw it
out of the tree, with one wingtip at a 45 degree angle up, at about a 45
degree angle to the wind. Surely this thin

RE: [RCSE] Field voltage tester

2006-03-28 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign
Cliff,

In my opinion, there is no "best" load tester for to check Rx packs. ALL
load testers use a "simulated" load that may, or may not, even come close to
what is actually happening where it counts...which is in the air, under
actual flight conditions, and under true flight loads!

I manufacture & distribute the BC6 Flight monitor. I don't want this to
sound like a commercial so I'll ask you to visit www.yntdesign.com and
check-out the BC6 Flight Monitor. The instructions/specs are on the website,
and if you have any questions, contact me , and I'll be happy to answer
them.

I'd go regardless. I like using my Pic because there aren't any local pilots
that can help me understand what I'm doing. I think the Pic helps me "get a
reference" on what the plane is actually doing with what I'm seeing
visually. I hope though that it will be a tool that can be dispensed with as
I gain more of that all-important experience. Again, this is in the absence
of other pilots to help. But, as Jim said, it takes flying to really gain
the experience. That Pic doesn't help me a bit when it comes to putting it
down where and when I want for the landing, and that's only going to come
with practice, something I'm sorely in need of!

many years ago I think they used bubble machines in WC F3B controlled by a

Wow...That's quite a change from what I remember. I bought an M-class quite
some time ago after I'd seen them sailing at a local college. At that time
the Pres of the AMYA lived in the area and he took me under his wing, and
got me started with a good hull, and then got me involved in competitions.
They are a tight-knit bunch but I never found them to be "secluded". It was
some great fun even though I never was really good at it. I can tell you
from experience they are definitely serious sailors though...more
"cut-throat" than the big boys !

Last time they let you fly either or both XC
events.   Aero-tow and winch.  There was only one fee.
There is only winch XC listed on the LSF site.  http://www.silentflight.org/NATS2006/Nats2006.html
but the entry form has them separated.  There is also  "After Hours
Events" listed on Friday after HL.  What would that be?

If the conditions were like last time, it would be
nice to have the option of flying in the aero-tow.  Having to choose "only
one" is difficult.  Anyone know if the aero-tow is like last time, where
you got towed as high as you wanted?  It mean't the biggest plane got up
4000 ft, while the smaller ones 1000 ft.  If they have a set height for
release, and monitors at the field corners, then it might be more fair and might
be a factor in people's decisions.  Since there is no frequency conflict
issue, it would be nice if there was still the option of doing
both.

I have a vehicle this year, but need a driver and
observer.  I'm sure my last year's team will be doing scale aero-tow, and I
need my 10K for LSF and Canadian.  Anyone able to help out?  I have
two winches available if anyone needs me to bring a spare.

RE: [RCSE] A good reason to use 5 cells

2005-12-30 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign
Here's my $.02 on the whole thing...

First, just about all modern-day equipment, digital or analog, can handle
the "nominal" 6V that we associate with a 5-cell pack. That being said...
There are 2 "problems" with running a 5-cell pack:
1) A 5-cell pack is "nominally" rated at 6.0V BUT...Hot off the charger it
is substantially more than the nominal 6.0V (check it some time for
yourself). That is where the "jitters" you hear about come in AND it does
subject your system components to some pretty harsh treatment. Fortunately
it doesn't last very long BUT it is over-stressing your components to some
degree.
2) A 5-cell pack, with the same mah rating as a 4-cell pack, will provide
LESS flight time than the 4-cell pack...PERIOD. 5-cells gives you more
voltage, when you give your equipment more voltage (V), it draws more
current (A). It'll make that servo seem faster and more powerful but the
cost is in current draw, which saps your battery more, and yes, it "might"
shorten your servo life a tad. Keep in mind, particularly with analog
servos, that those little tiny gears are typically not designed for that
extra "oomph" that you're getting either (keep spares on-hand ).

Lastly, I just gotta ask the question...How many pilots out there can
really, I mean REALLY, tell the difference??? Does it make THAT much
difference if your servo moves .0x seconds faster? Can you REALLY feel or
see it? Do you REALLY think THAT is going to make you the next WC or get you
down on time and on the spot??? The proper approach to get more powerful or
faster servos, IMHO...Buy more powerful or faster servos to begin with!!! It
never ceases to amaze me that some people will put over $1500 into an
aircraft (power, glider, heli) and then try to save a few dollars on the
servos!

That's my $.02 ~ Happy New Year to all!

Every digital servo that I am aware of, and I run most of them from
JR281's to 8611's and Futaba 9252's, CAN take 6 volts without a problem.
Old wives tale. 7.2 volts is a different thing. But I love this myth
about needing a regulator with 5-cell packs.

I have run 5-cell packs (Nicad & NiMH) in everything from D/HLG to
molded TD to helis to 40% giant scale aerobatic planes for several
years, ALL with digitals of various sizes, with not a single problem.
Run a regulator if it makes you feel better, but it is totally
unnecessary. And even in my big aerobatic planes I cannot tell the
difference between flight #1 and #5 (when I charge).

The very worst thing that you "may" observe is a slight jitter when you
first turn on. Lasts about 15 seconds as the surface charge goes away.

And to the point about stalling, etc. causing a need for a regulator.
Sorry, the regulator does nothing there. A stalled servo pulls what a
stalled servo pulls, irrespective of a regulator. Most OEM plugs are
rated at 3 amps continuos (means no real rise in temp at that amperage)
which is well below the full stall current for most glider digitals, and
right at stall current for say an 8611 or 9252.

I apologize...How rude of me not to share the

Cameron Clarke at http://www.compositerc.com/ makes 3 different sets and
can also do "custom" work as I recall. He's from the Sacramento area I believe

sailing holiday. Called a friend of his back in SAC and had him ship me what I
needed via Priority Mail. My new Soprano is now ready to go...(my fault that I
needed a new servo cover).

Just bought one of the new Futaba Synthesizer for my Super 8 transmitter.
Someone told me that there units use additiontal power from the battery

generate more heat than a standard module.
Any one have and answer or opinon?

Thanks, Ron

Ron -
Sounds like it would be a pretty nice feature during those winter fishing
trips down here in Alabama. You could use it to keep your hands warm. The
last rf module I had that did that was an old Airtronics one. Somebody told
me that an rf module was supposed to put out rf energy, which is a different
wavelength than heat energy. Guess somebody at Futaba must have got a little
mixed up. My newer JR and Multiplex 'mitters don't seem to put out much
heat. I leave 'em at home when I go fishing. Heck, my Evo will transmit for
8 or 9 hours on the stock battery, but it won't warm your hands up at all.
What's up with that?

Hope you bums all have fun up in Lexington this weekend. Say hello to "El
Grande" for me.

Gentlemen,

I REALLY apologize! I don't know what could have possibly gotten into

for "watering down" our ranks with such "riff-raff", even if he is a good
stick!

I'm going up to visit Dan next weekend and, while he's busy building our
Genie Pros, I thought I'd help him get a headstart while we still have a
season. I'm going to bring him my Victory-C so he can work with Doug Pike to
get started. I can't wait 'til he gets his first whiff of TD with an
Unlimited ship!

Note to Doug Pike: Teach Dan NOT to fool around with the launch pedal with
plane hooked-up & in one hand whilst holding radio in other!

Note to Dan: If Doug starts fooling 'round with the launch pedal, back away
from the line, back away from the line quickly!

Now back to fooling around with my XP3-E conversion. Yep, an old XP3, that
can't be DLG'd any longer. I won an Astro 010 Brushless at the Worker's
Raffle, and...Well, I should know in a few days if it will work. Actually,
it's my wife's fault...She wants to learn to fly!

I'm beginning to understand the addiction to thermal hunting and I'd like to
place the blame where it belongs, squarely on the shoulders of my good
friend Sheldon Smith.

I've always appreciated soaring, but was truly hooked after putting a 42
minute flight on my Ariane V6 a while ago. Folks, this is a 1.66 meter F5B
plane that weighs 60oz all up. Of course, it climbs at over 100km/h, but it
WILL NOT thermal in a fart. It took a boomer day, but now I'm doing less
climbing and diving than climbing and soaring and I'm realizing more and
more that boomers are not necessary to climb, but smooth circling and energy
retention will allow me to thermal in moderate conditions.

I'm starting in earnest today on a Genie Pro. Winston was kind enough to
clue me in on the section changes he made for this wing as opposed to the
Genie and Genie LT/S, and the foam cutter is primed and ready for action.

Look out JB, I think I might just attend the NATS next year with Sheldon.
Looking forward to comparing tunes collections on our iPods.

RE: [RCSE] RES not for the "elite"

2005-08-10 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign
I'm sorry but I can't help but share this with you guys after seeing that
pic...It brought back some great memories!

Flashback...2004 NATS
I'm taking a break from the Trolls (one can handle just so much within a
given period of time) and wanted to catch some pics of the UNL launches,
kinda' up-close & personal. DP (pilot) and Mike Smith (timer) are in the
launch group going up. I ask DP if he minds if I kinda' "hang" with them
during the flight, maybe learn a little something (maybe via osmosis? Yeah
right!).

The launch goes off, DP gets to where DP wants to be, which is generally far
higher and further away than anyone else is comfortable with, and they
wander over to the landing fence. I'm listening, they're not saying too
much...over here, over there, etc. They both look satisfied and then they
both proceed to park their butts on the ground & stretch out (just like the
photo). I'm listening really hard, making sure I don't miss anything, I mean
really hoping to pick-up some "pearls of wisdom". Wrong! They are talking
about this, that, & the other thing...Anything BUT soaring and the Insanity.
DP is kinda' nudging it every once in awhile and THAT is IT! No exchange of
this air, that air, or no air.

I looked down at them and said "DP, do ya' mind if I say something?" DP
glances up & says "Sure, go ahead". I said "Frankly DP...Watching you fly is
friggin' boring!". He and Mike both cracked up and DP looked up at me, with
a big smile, and said "Yeah, I know, I just don't like to work too hard".

That, to me, will always be one of my favorite memories of attending a NATS.
Lemme tell ya' something, with all the posts going on about competition vs
fun vs more representative, more RES, less 2M, etc...We're really
undervaluing one of the truly great things about the NATS, and that is that
we have some of the finest people in attendance, regardless of what they
fly, or how well they fly it, that I have ever had the pleasure to meet and
get to know. THAT my friends, is something that I hope will NEVER change...

A badge that was earned by 84% of eligible F3J entrants. The remaining 16%

Man, I can't begin to tell you guys how much I enjoy this upcoming week
ahead. I can (almost) free my head from the complexities of life for an
entire week, just be with friends and fly models every day. Simply flowing
from one round to the next, one good time to the next. That is some freedom
that is extremely rare for me. I know I treasure it, I know others do too,
that's one of the reasons I take so many pictures to bring back those
memories.

Here is a link page to photo galleries from Nats 2004, remember the good
times?

I am really looking forward to seeing all my friends in a couple of days,
making some new friends, and sharing this special week ahead. Life is too
short, lets maximize this week and squeeze all the fun out of it we can!

RE: [RCSE] Schulze chargers? - Another option IS available

2005-03-28 Thread Sheldon-YNT uDesign
Tom,

You specifically asked about the Schulze however, I have another option for
you...The PowerCube! YNT is the North American distributor for this new
charger, which is from the same people that brought us the ALTi2 Digital
Altimeter.

The PowerCube which can do everything the Schulze and Orbit MiroLader
chargers can do and then some! The price is comparable to and actually a
little better than either because the PC interface is built-in. I haven't
updated the YNT website yet but you can check it out at:
http://www.lomcovak.cz/charger/powercube1.html. It has some interesting
features that put it a little above either of the others as well...

I'm taking advance orders for the PowerCube now while awaiting my initial
shipment. If anyone is interested they can contact me off-line.

Somebody talk me out of the Schulze charger I've been connoitering...these
things will do just about any type of battery out there. Only thing I don't
like (besides the price) is the OEM demand that it only be powered from a

Uhhh Gordy...You better check out the requirements for witnesses of
non-competitive tasks again. Appears you may have misunderstood them for the
higher Levels!!! Sure would hate to see you miss your next LSF Level because
of it. What you stated is correct for L1/L2...but NOT for the remaining
L3-L5 non-competitive tasks. For competitive tasks, there's only 2 qualified
witnesses, the CD or the Official Scorer.

Here's the requirements, right off the LSF website:

Section 5 - Witnesses

Verification of each task of each Level requires the signature of qualified
witnesses.

The approved witnesses for non-competitive requirements shall be:

a. Level I: One witness, over 21 years of age, who is not related to
the pilot, or one witness, holding Level I status or higher, who is not
related to the pilot.
b. Level II: Same as for Level I.
c. Level III: Two witnesses, as in Level I.
d. Level IV: Same as for Level III.
e. Level V: Two witnesses, each holding Level II status or higher, who
are not related to the pilot.

The approved witness for competitive requirements shall be either the
contest Director or the Official Scorer.

Does anybody have a good source for receiver antenna wire? I have 3
receivers that I would like to replace the wire on. One was in my Graphite
and I extended it to 1/4 wave length outside of the fuselage using one
conductor I stripped from some Hitec servo wire. I would prefer to obtain a
reasonable quantity of single conductor wire.

Thanks,

Jim -

My Mom called me the other day and asked about the name change. Turns out
that Dad had shown her his copy of Model Aviation, particularly the nice
photo of her eldest son with two of his old flying buds.

She'd like a full explanation of the reasons for changing my name. You could
be in big trouble. Momma don't take no crap from yankeeboys. I told her that
I was completely innocent and had absolutely no idea what was going on. And
the real Bubba's of the world are in line right behind Momma.

Start running while you can. Can I have your old Icon?

RE: [RCSE] What Brown Did for Me (The Outcome)

2004-10-08 Thread Sheldon - YNT uDesign
Glad you got satisfaction Pat. The problem isn't just "brown" though, as we
all know. I ordered one of the Mini-Flacons from Tom Copp at F3X. It got
here, via USPS Priority Mail, and the box was crushed in several places.
Inside, there was damage to the wing to the point that the skin was actually
"torn" at the end of the aileron. I called Tom and he sent out a second
plane immediately (cool). That box also came in the same
condition...crushed. However, the 2nd plane survived a bit better than the
1st one. I still have issues with the plane but that's a different issue.
Tom's on vacation now so I won't be able to resolve things until the end of
the month.

The way you handled your claim was the correct response although, for what
we pay in shipping charges/insurance coverage, you shouldn't have to jump
through hoops to get satisfaction.

Subject: [RCSE] What Brown Did for Me (The Outcome)

Guys,

I thought I would follow up with how my dealings with UPS went after they
broke my Fusion in half. I of course immediately started the claim process
as soon as I found out the shipment had been damaged. I asked the receiver
to take the plane to the local UPS Store for inspection. The UPS Store
basically taped up the package and shipped it back to me and filed the
necessary paperwork with the claims department. A couple of days later a
representative called me and informed me that they were rejecting the claim
as I expected them to do. I kept a calm demeanor (which was very hard for
me) and started talking to representative about the way the plane was
packaged and the extent of the damage to the box and to the plane and he
decided to call the receiver and talk to him as well about the packing, the
box damage and the plane damage. He decided after talking to both of us
that the box had been "Handled Beyond Normal and Customary UPS Handling" and
decided to honor the claim. He then sent me an official claim form and
asked for me to attach proof of value for the items. This is where things
got a little tricky since Fred did not have a website showing the plane and
it's replacement costs and they would not accept and email from Fred as
proof. Luckily I was able to find what I needed on Don Richmond's Hilaunch
site. UPS will also allow the use of like items so I was able to get info
for the RES wings by using a copy off of NESP's site for a replacement
Victory Wing. The servos were easy thanks to JR's and Hitec's websites.
Once all that information was faxed into the claim rep he called me again
and told me check would be cut and mailed within 10 working days. Well
today the check arrived for the total amount of the insured value plus my
shipping costs. It took right at about 3 weeks from report of damage to
receiving the check. The nice thing is I got to keep the plane so I can at
least try to salvage the fuse and RES wings. I am not sure if the flap
aileron wings are worth trying to salvage except for the servos. I found
the people at UPS were very nice and helpful and one very common response
with everyone I talked to was "I am very sorry for the inconvenience this
had caused you". Bottom line, is Brown really did work for me. Any future
shipments though with UPS will be through one of their UPS stores where I
will let them pack and ship the items for me. They guarantee a total
hassle free experience on any damaged shipment that they pack and ship from
their Company Stores. Well I have rambled on long enough.

See Ya,

Pat McCleave

Warning: The following opinion is NOT Gordy bashing! If you want to
respond to it as such...Don't bother - PLEASE!

Sorry
Canuck but you've NEVER met Gordy...You have NO IDEA how big those shoes are!
I think I'll just continue to be one of his acolytes and gaze on in
wonder and sheer amazement. Actually, I've met Gordy and yes, he's kinda
brusque, says it like it is, etc...However...More times (many more times) he's
right than he is wrong.

IMO,
it's a matter of opinion and perception...If your initial perception of him is
that he's a rude, insufferable SOB, and because of that what could he possibly
know (?), then your opinion is going to be pretty low and you won't even
hear what he has to say...right wrong, or indifferent. In that case, you'll
probably miss a good opportunity to learn stuff (sigh).

However...If your initial is that he comes off rude and is a PITA, but
MAYBE he does know whereof he speaks...He has an awful lot of knowledge to share
and is always more than willing to help others. As others have said...He
probably does more, behind the scenes, to promote R/C Sailplanes, all over the
world, than most other individuals. Besides...The man REALLY can fly a
sailplane!!!

I was looking for a sloper, but I ended up looking at very well done RC

I was just amazed at the quality / realism, if nothing else the site's

RE: [RCSE] Contests, Landings, etc.

2004-10-02 Thread Sheldon - YNT uDesign
Now there's the most common-sense observation & conclusion that I've seen
yet...

>>
I still see the best pilots winning. They launch well, they fly well, they
land well...what I need to do, practice, practice, practice
<<

We can try to implement any of the ideas or none of the ideas...However,
Steve's observation and conclusion will ALWAYS be true. The best pilots will
continue to win and they'll win because they practice! Hell, I can afford
any of the so-called "world-beaters" out there...Icon, Pike, you name it! My
new world-beater however is not going to guarantee that I can beat JW or DP
though. It can "help", it might give me "opportunities" that my Sapphire
won't, but the only thing that might get me close is practice, practice,
practice...And JW/DP having a REALLY unfortunate problem! Case in
point...I'm sure I can borrow an Icon (or whatever) from someone...& I'll
let JW/DP use my Sapphire. We can launch MoM and you tell me who YOU think
has the best chance of winning!

Seriously...Steve has made the correct assessment...So let's stop whining
and go practice. Or at least go fly & have some fun before the snow starts
coming!

Where we going with this thread?

Limiting the height of a launches by either limiting power of winch or line
length?

Is this to even the playing field? No big planes? Or to just limit the
Big Plane Race? No bigger or stronger planes. Light planes only, planes
that do not pull hard or launch high.

Altimeters in each plane with a height factor would be an interesting
concept.

F3J gives an advantage to the pilot who releases early and not necessarily
getting a complete launch. Time on the line is time not counting towards
your score.

F3B has done a nice job of creating an equal launch environment. A big
part of F3B is getting a good launch. Many people would not be able to
launch properly from an F3B winch. If you can't launch well from a
standard TD winch you will have a problem with an F3B winch. And most
people would not be able to afford an F3B winch or keep replacing the
Monofilament line on it that other people would abuse. (I can hear the
whiners now complaining about the cost.)

With a crippled launch system you will still find that the pilots that have
the best launch technique will be getting the most height. No room for
error. Sort of a Launch Contest.

I thought the goal was to put emphasis on flying?

The solution: Closely matched winches, man on man. That's a contest.

I still see the best pilots winning. They launch well, they fly well, they
land well. I can do two of the three okay, I just need more
practice. But I don't gripe about landings, it's part of the contest. I
know what I need to do, practice, practice, practice.

RE: [RCSE] XC story

2004-09-29 Thread Sheldon - YNT uDesign
I too got my first sampling of XC at the NATS this year and it was a very
surprising, and unexpected I might add, experience. In as few words as
possible...What a BLAST! NO, I didn't fly however I volunteered my Avalanche
as a chase vehicle for several Teams and, while driving/spotting, had the
opportunity to share in part of the experience with them:

1) Dr. Dan - Now here's a guy that is going to have fun, no matter what/how
he's flying. Rolls on tow, inverted tows...Let's have some fun.
2) Jim Bacus - Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockers...He'd
only flown his scale ship, for the first time, the weekend before. Always on
the lookout to learn more and share what he knows with others. No matter
what your level, Jim will "push" you to do better. You'll have fun doing it
and you'll learn a lot along the way.
3) TK - What can I say...Relaxed, knows his stuff, don't sweat the small
stuff. His sense of humor, open attitude, and willingness to help are
infectious. When he's helping you, he doesn't tell you what to do...He
nudges you in the right direction and, when the light comes on for you, he's
the one that has a grin from ear to ear - mission accomplished!
4) Peter Goldsmith - Peter, finessing his XC plane around the course is art!
If ever you get the opportunity to fly/learn from Peter, 2 words, DO IT! I
drove for Peter during his 1st Place run and understood more, during that
run, just listening to him explain what he was doing, why he was doing it,
and the thought process behind it all. With the back of the AV open, I could
clearly hear/see him explaining to Bacus everything that was going on. The
look on Jimmy's face was like an apprentice standing before the master (and
Jim's no slouch on his own!). I hope that sometime in the future I get the
opportunity to fly with him myself.

I got to meet a lot of new people, people that really support this aspect of
soaring, and now I have a little more understanding of why they're so
passionate about it. Heck, they even hooked me...I came away with TK's 4M
Discus after he decided to purchase a Nimbus4! On the surface XC may not
sound all that exciting however, if you get the opportunity, try it...I
think you'll be surprised!

Oh yeah...On last thing...My Teams came in 5th, 3rd, and 1st...Maybe the
Avalanche helped, maybe not??? All I know is I came away with a new
interest and respect for XC which was totally unexpected!

Thanks to all of the above for letting me be part of the experience!

Actually a great narrative Joe.

I had my first taste of XC (of any kind) at the NATS this year. Granted,
the inbound course that was finally adopted for the scale guys was more
like driving around a NASCAR track, but it opened my eyes to the
potential fun and challenges of XC flying. Before acting as spotter for
Pete Goldsmith with his 7 meter Nimbus 2 on the "race track", I went for
an attempt on the outbound FAI course. The wind was blowing 15+ and I
was flying an old beat up 5 meter Ka6E. This was really stupid, but oh
what fun. I made it exactly 1 mile out into a soybean field, clocked
forward speed at 5 mph at one point.
In contrast, spotting for Pete later in the day on the closed course we
were driving 55 mph and Pete was putting in camber so not to fly too far
ahead. The potential for scale ships on XC tasks is phenomenal. Pete
flew 6 laps on the course without stopping to thermal. There was some
lift, but this was almost all aspect ratio and L/D. We were blowing by
other competitors struggling to stay aloft.
It always seemed to me rather silly to be standing in one spot and
flying a 6 meter Nimbus which had an L/D of 40+, now I am hooked, but
the problem here in the East are the wooded hills and developed real
estate prevent us from setting up adequate courses with safe land outs.

JD
PS: a very scale like LET Albatross 4 meter won the winch FAI XC in the
very windy conditions.

I've not had any problems once I explain to them what it is, a "computer
