Re: Thunderbird problem
Hello Larry Thank you for your reply. I found Thunderbird became more and more difficult to use after version 60.4.0 and so, I eventually went back to that version. It works well with my 64 bit laptop apart from the editing problems I mentioned previously. I agree WE is becoming less and less useful but I often find We works with somethings that other screen readers cannot cope with. I am intending to keep it on my machines so long as it is useful. Re: Thunderbird
Am aware of the issues when comes to composing emails. Why I - near the end of my initial message stated that it will need some further investigation. Wonder if there might be some kind of an extension, or rather perhaps a Theme, for Thunderbird that will bring us closer to a solution. Themes, control things like color schemes, font sizes and so on. To what extent that is where the bird has its nest, I am not sure, but it might be worth playing a bit around. For those who want a toy store to explore, Thunderbird has their own central for releasing all these kinds of extra gadgets for the software. Something I for one, was not aware of up till very recently. The web address is: .thunderbird.net Here you will find extensions, plug-ins, and themes. You will find different cattegories, depending of what set of main features you are looking for. Unfortunately, it seems to me, not all of he stuff offered up there, is compatible with newer versions of Thunderbird. Meaning that you might end up finding a promising AddOn, download and install it, only to find that it won't start when you fire up Thunderbird. Uninstall, and better luck with your next attempt in searching through the hundreds of alternatives offered to you on their webpage. Again, it might be there would be found some nifty little thing within the settings of Thunderbird. Never really fooled with it, but if Thunderbird is made up on the same basis as its sister program Firefox, you've got a whole story in scrolling throuh, and messing around with, an untold number of settings, which you might not always have a clue what consequences will be. For the sake of ease, I tried doing some searching on the net, hoping that there would be some known tweak to make Thunderbird more accessible for screen readers. Well, your choice of search engine might be more informative than mine. All I found so far, only lists Thunderbird as one of the most accessible Email clients for screen reader users. Amongst the top-ten. Sure, I guess we all knew that much, yet what we here are looking for, would be how to make it really accessible; not just 90 percent, kind of. Try a similar search for Firefox, and see how far you get. Sum it all up, unless someone has stumbled on a solution, I don't know other than we are seeing WinEyes slowly loosing Terrain in the computing landscape of the blind. All knew it would happen, but meanwhile, the best solution for your composing issues that I could come up with, is to write and edit your messages in something like Notepad, and then copy-paste the final result into the composition screen of Thunderbird, before you hit the Send-button. At least, that's what has worked for me, so far. not a real solution, but you get the job done. I wish your advice could be beneficial to me, but my issue is more basic and probably won't be solved until I finally upgrade to Windows-10. I like Thunderbird a lot. I don't receive a lot of e-mails, so it's easy for me to scroll down and find e-mails without keyboard shortcuts. Re: Thunderbird repeating
Hi, On some occasions I have witnessed TB repeating as I arrowed down the list in the inbox and I have also seen it repeat the subjects. However, at this time as I write, I am experiencing no such behavior even in the subject as you suggested. For what it is worth, I would recommend that when folks experience unusual behavior they should check which setfile is loaded. I have experienced times when I was using TB, the proper setfile was not loaded. Re: Thunderbird
probably I have lost something here. But please, what is your issue? You have got trouble with newest Thunderbird? OK, but could you tell us what exactly you are experiencing, it might be possible for us to advice where the trouble nests. Currently running Thunderbird here, updated just about a week ago, and have seen no extra issues. So likely something has got messed up in your installation, but without knowing exactly what the issue is, it will be a guesswork to trace the trouble. Re: Thunderbird help
Hi Tom, Thanks for your note. I guess I should have thought to replace the entire TB folder but I didn't. When I reinstalled TB after windows repair, both contact and local folders were missing. I had previously used windows backup to save everything on my system. I noted that after reinstalling TB, the identity had changed and I wasn't sure if there were an association between messages and the former identity. But, using the backup, I restored the local folders and all local folders were in order. For the record, I di find the contacts file, it is history.mab and is in the TB folder. So, again, thanks for your help. Bernie On 10/23/2017 9:33 PM, Tom Kingston via Talk wrote: > Bernie, > I don't know what file or files the contacts are in. Re: Thunderbird
Honestly, it's been a few years since I set up my Thunderbird. So this will be a total guesswork. But for nothing else, make sure the settings in the View menu are correct. Under Toolbars, make sure only the Menu bar, and Status bar are checked. All other features should be unchecked. Under Layout, you might want to go for the Classic view. Under Folders, try set it to Unified. Under Today's Pane, make sure it is set to None. Since you have Thunderbird working on your machine, it might be a workaround for you to make a copy of your Thunderbird folder, under %Appdata% in Windows Explorer. Make sure to delete your mail folders from the copy. Then, let your friend replace her Thunderbird folder, with your copy. This should ensure she will get the same setup as you. She might have to enter her account details anew. Should you need further steps on the folder copying, let me know, and I might be able to pull together some step-by-step instructions on the matter. Hi Carol, Just a shot in the dark, since I don't use TB, but if you're in browse mode, can you turn it off with Ctrl-Shift-A; in any case, can you not just F6 over to the folders? She now has email coming and going, but there is no simple way to get to the inbox. How does one get rid of the screen that has all of the junk in it like filter messages, write messages, search bing, etc. and get to the inbox after installing Thunderbird. We have turned off the splash screen, but that does not make any difference. Neither one of us has any mouse function in Thunderbird any longer and I used to doo a simple search for inbox and mouse click it and the inbox came right up. Re: Thunderbird message amounts
Hi Brenda, I was able to read the information about read and unread and total files both from within a specific email folder and from the main inbox screen. Also, I could read the same information from within this email composition. What I did was to press the touch cursor, shift+numpad plus key command and then control+end to take me to the very last item on the screen. From there, it was easy to left arrow through the numbers. Once you have the information, simply press the PC cursor, numpad plus twice. I am very happy to have this feature. Hi Marvin, Wow, you use 3 screen readers. I'm having enough trouble learning jaws. I keep trying to use W-E commands in jaws. Fortunately, Window-eyes doesn't freeze (hhh) with TB. I have had an occasional issue with FF and W-E freezing. I'm finding jaws is confusing with FF. Probably need to practice more but W-E is just so smooth it makes it hard to switch. Re: Thunderbird accounts
Neville, Deleting messages and emptying the trash folder does not actually delete anything. It only removes them from view. You need to compact folders. I've been using TB for years, have countless folders and messages, and my %AppData%\Thunderbird folder is 59.5 Mb. There is a threshold you can set to be prompted to compact folders in one of the menus, but it rarely seems to fire for me. So I've gotten into the habit of just doing it manually via the File menu every month or so when I perform other system cleanup tasks. I have two email accounts, close the tree up to the top level of each, e.g. tom.kings...@charter.net (27) closed, Alt-F File, F Compact folders. Wait a bit and the status bar will display how much data was deleted. Here's a link to Mozilla's article on compacting. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders#main-content Hth, Tom On 5/23/2017 2:24 AM, Neville via Talk wrote: Hi Raul, Thanks for your reply on saving the Thunderbird folder. Unfortunately Tbird saves a lot of old messages in the Profile folder which can go back years even though the trash folder can be kept clear. My Profile folder grew to around 6 gb although theTools, erase recent history option was used from time to time. While doing a scan with a newly installed Bullguard, old messages from years in the past were displayed on the screen as they were scanned. These messages even included those from an old email address which had been previously removed from the system. The fact that old messages, which I thought had been removed when deleted, were still around came as quite a shock. I used the Mozilla backup tool without saving emails but with address settings and with a fresh install of Thunderbird, the new Profile folder with three account settings came to under 20 mb. The Tools, remove recent history option is used more frequently these days but my Profile folder continues to grow. It is currently around 140 mb and when it gets to around 150 mb, the process mentioned above will be used again. This is why I asked if there was a simple way of saving the account settings in a similar way to saving the address book. It would make the setting up of a new clean Profile folder easier. Hi there MIKE! When I close Thunderbird and open it again, it generally opens in the last folder I was in. One thing you might try is Shift tabbing back to the list of folders. My only real issue with ThunderBird is that the W.E. focus tends to jump around. Oh, I did find a solution to the problem of ThundrBird not responding. I simply have to remember to keep each particular mailbox at a reasonable size. I hate to say it but some of my mailboxes had litterally thousands of messages in them and I think this was causing some real issues. Just a bit of advice. Re: thunderbird, yet again not focusing
Jed, Here's a few suggestions. first, never turn on browse mode in a composition window. that puts it in a strange state and you have to close and reopen TB to get it back to normal. Make the following changes. Alt-T Tools, O Options. Arrow down to Advanced. Tab once and make sure you're on the General tab. If not arrow left to it. Tab down to Use hardware acceleration when available and uncheck it if it's checked. Tab again to the Config editor button and press the spacebar. If a dialog pops up with a warming just tab to the I'll be careful button and press the spacebar. You should land in a search edit box. If by any chance you discover that browse mode is on here toggle it off. Enter direct2d.disabled Tab to the list of entries. You should see gfx.direct2d.disabled true or false. If it's false press the application key to open the context menu and press enter on Toggle to change it to true. Shift-Tab back up to the search edit box. Enter layers.acceleration.disabled Tab back down into the list. You should see layers.acceleration.disabled true or false. Again if it's false press the application key and toggle it to true. Control-W to close the editor. Tab to the OK button and press spacebar. This should return you to the main TB window. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, knock on wood, throw salt over your shoulder, then close TB, take a shot of Irish whiskey, and reopen TB Hth, Tom On 11/11/2016 10:26 PM, Jed Barton via Talk wrote: Hey guys, ok, so this just makes no sense why those of you are having no issues. Larry, You are not risking anything by trying the Mozilla backup utility if first you make a copy of your existing Profile folder. If you don't like the results made by the utility then just copy back the Profile folder and you are back where you started. Neville. Re: thunderbird, yet again not focusing
Hi, I have been using Thunderbird for years wityhout the problems you mention. As I don't know what you have already tried, here are some suggestions. Download the latest version of TBird and save it somewhere handy.Install it if you are not using the latest version. Some time ago I heard there were problems using speech with the 64 bit version so I use the 32 bit version on my 64 bit system whithout any dramas. Remove or turn off the Thunderbird app. It works well without it. Get a pair of eyes to check out the screen while loading and also while in Thunderbird to see if there is some message or other blocking the screen. If all fails, save the existing Profile folder elsewhere just for safe keeping. You could just rename the three files or folders if desired. use the Mozilla backup utility to save the Profile contents without backing up the emails. This will reduce the size of the file dramatically and hopefully get rid of problems. Regardless of what you do, the Profile folder continues to grow. Recently mine grew to 6 g b after years of use and after the Mozilla backup utility was used, it fell down to under 20 mb. If you have got nowhere with your problem, then un-installTB and make sure the profile folder is gone. i.e. user, appdata, roaming, Thunderbird. Reboot your system. Then using the TB programme copy you downloaded previously, install TB creating a new empty Profile folder. Run the Mozilla backup utility which will prompt for the previously backed up file. This file contains all your email settings etc. If you are not sure about which setting to check or uncheck when making the backup, then make a few backup files with different settings. Remember, I suggested you backup the Profile folder earlier in case something goes wrong. HTH Neville. Don, when I experience this issue, I do the ctrl + bacslash turn off the speech and then simply restart it by pressing the CTRL+ALT+W to restart the speech and it works for me about 95 percent of the time. Hi, Have you tried compacting found on the file menu. Also removing the history found under the Tools menu As a desperate measure, you could try the following. It would be worth taking a copy of the profile folder before doing the following. This is only in case something goes wrong. 1. Backup your Thunderrbird settings with the Mozbackup utility. Don't just take a copy of the Profile folder and paste it back later. The profile folder continues to grow regardless of what you do. My Profile folder grew to around 6.5 gb but when backed up with the Mozback utility without emails and history, it came down to around 13 mb. 2. Un-install Tbird making sure the old profile folder is gone. Install the latestThunderbird with an empty profile folder. Use theMozbackup utility to put back the settings. I recently did this to get rid of the huge profile folder. HTH Neville. On 14/09/2016 10:56 AM, Jim via Talk wrote: Hi there GROUP! Re: Thunderbird and it repeting the first few lines of A message
Hi, Rather than restarting Window-Eyes, I just stop W-E from reading the message and restart reading with control-shift-R. That works for me. I hope that this thunderbird problem gets fixed soon! Bob, K8LR, tinn...@charter.net On 8/18/2016 11:45 PM, Casey via Talk wrote: Hi thanks to another Lister hear. I tried the suggestion of when I open Thunderbird and after right is open. Hit my ALT control w and of course window-eyes reloads again. But yes the repeating the first line or few words in an e-mail message is gone. So why is this? And maybe in the next release of window-eyes Thunderbird can be taken A look and at and find out why it is doing what it does. And maybe we will get A fix for it. Thank you all and hope this can be corrected soon. ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. Re: Thunderbird Focus issues
Ok, when using nvda, and Jaws they work just fine with thunderbird. Window eyes is the problem the thunderbird set files aren't even loaded you have to manually unload and thenload them before they are active. But that does not fix the back space issue when ereasing what you have written. I Know several people who are strong window eyes users that switched either to nvda or jaws. Because of thunderbird issues, and browse mode issues. Ihave been a window eyes user for more then ten years but as of late use window eyes very seldomly. Re: Thunderbird thinks this message is junk.
If you go into the Junk folder, there should be a menu with which you can change the status of a message. I only did this once, so I don't remember exactly what it says. It's easy, and since I did it, I have had no problem with Thunderbird looking out for me. Peace. Linette On 5/2/2016 10:33 PM, Donald L.
