That MAY have worked Stuart. Un-fortunately, I had a couple of conditions set in
the actual filter from previous tests, and in my haste to try your suggestion I
overlooked them. This caused many emails to get moved to the destination folder
that shouldn't have. I'll have to weed out those inadvertant moves and compare
the final count of emails to the count before the re-filter to see if it has
gone up.

I'll let you know.

Many thanks Stuart.

Thank you Miguel. I'm going to try your suggestion.

However, if this .png makes it through (it's only 4KB), it'll show how the
filter is built. Notice the up/down arrows to the right of the box displaying
"email address 5". clicking those arrows will move you up or down through all
the 127 *actual* addresses entered in the "block".

It seems so simple and as I mentioned, a "re-filter" action on the source folder
did find 39 of the emails contained in the block of addresses. But only on the
first re-filter. Subsequent re-filterings MOVED no more addresses. Even
changing the condition ie: SENDER, TEXT, HEADER, MESSAGE SOURCE, or HEADER FIELD
had no effect. It never did find any more of the multitude of addresses
contained in the block.

Filter help

2021-07-20 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I have a folder which contains multiple unique emails from a particular group of
people. They were originally moved there manually. I wanted to create a filter
for the source folder to look for the characters in their email addresses which
appear before the @ sign, then move those emails to the aforementioned
destination folder. When I re-filtered the source folder, only about 39 of the
emails actually got moved. Many more which met the criteria specified in the
filter were never moved. I double and tripled checked for typing errors and
there were none.

I can't pinpoint the 39 that were moved because the destination folder had over
a hundred already-read emails and the emails that didn't get moved from the
source folder were also already-read.

I used the block option in the creation of the filter because there were so many
(about 128) addresses I wanted caught. In the re-filter options of the source
folder I chose incoming mail, read mail and replied messages all at once.

Anyone have any idea why the filter caught 39 of them and not any of the others?

When I upgraded from v2 to v6 I just installed v6 over the v2 install.
That worked mostly fine, except that I lost all my filters. I think v3
introduced a new filtering system so you should probably upgrade to v3
first and from that to v7. I don't remember any problems with

Hello Bat Folk,

Many years ago I used TB! (2.12*) and loved it, then [stuff happened]
and I find myself now needing TB! more than ever.

I have the latest ver now installed (7.4.16 - trial mode)
I also have my full old install and a full backup of it.
Let's call this account:

I'd like my new install operate just the way I had 2.12 operating.

A major part of what I'm looking for are all the rules (templates?)
that used to auto-populate things like the REPLY-FROM field to always
automatically populate with the email address that the original email
was sent to me at, signatures based on from FROM addresses, etc.
I cannot even remember all the customizations I grew to need!

So, How do I restore from the old backup

so that my old 2.12 machinations and environment transpose to the new

Thanks Sam. Actually the clothing store email advertisements stopped coming,
perhaps because I clicked on "un-subscribe" so many times. Nothing else has come
in that I would call spam and nothing has appeared in my junk folder either. So
for the moment, I don't have a spam problem anymore. But at least now AntiSpam

You have to train the filters. I don't think there's an exact figure, but it
might be a hundred messages or so before you start seeing somewhat consistent
filtering. Just continue marking spam and check the junk folder and mark false

I'm not quite sure how this is supposed to work however. I used

Thinking that marking the email as junk would set a flag for ASS, I downloaded

expected ASS to catch the email and automatically move it to the JUNK folder
before it ever got to the inbox

I'm obviously missing something about how ASS is supposed to work.

I believe if it were the 64-bit version it would say. Also, the installation
file would look something like this:

thebat_64_6-8-2.msi

So I expect that's the problem you're running into. Looking at the archive of
available downloads, there isn't a 64-bit version of TB! till 6.8.8 (at least
available for download). So, you could download that version, or you could

One of the easiest ways from Outlook to do this is to copy and paste
from the message viewer into a word document. Presumably this works
from TB! as well.

In addition to the main laundry list, I've been asked
for a way to prevent The Bat! from automatically
filling in addresses/groups from the history of typed
addresses (should use address book only, so no one
types addre...@example.com and ends up with
 addre...@example.com, addre...@example.com,
 addre...@example.com automatically filled in simply
because the previous message that they sent had all of
those addresses in the TO field).

I may just be lucky, but TB! doesn't do this for me. Or it might be my
settings at Options | Preferences | Address History.

  Collect addresses from:
Outgoing mail ticked,
Incoming mail not ticked.

Track history of these accounts only
only ticked one account, that I rarely use

Feature laundry list from administration - help!

2015-02-25 Thread Diana Calder
Hello Tbudl,

We have new administration. They are used to Outlook and quite dissatisfied
with The Bat!. I have a laundry list of items that they wish to have changed in
order to keep using The Bat!; otherwise, they want to look into other options
(i.e. Outlook). Some things, I can figure out - they want all email replies to
default to top-posting, for example, and they want the library logo included in
the footer as well as social networking links and a privacy statement. Those, I
have figured out. Other things, however, I haven't figured out. Also, I'm
hoping that there's an easy way to duplicate profiles/template settings between
accounts and computers as I don't want to have to manually make all of these
changes on each individual computer. Hopefully, I can get some assistance with
these items from the list, as I really, really do not want to have to move to
Outlook.

Outstanding items quoted directly from the laundry list:

- Presentation of email to be received or sent without bracket lead

- Footnote contact information remains with the body of the email. (presently
the footnote is at the bottom of the page under the email trail)

- Able to link directly to websites or online forms

- Able to accept meeting invitations (outlook)

- Able to link directly to a calendar function

- Sharable calendar for admin staff

- Able to save email in word document file

I can easily change what is added before the angle brackets when quoting but I
haven't been able to figure out how to get rid of the angle brackets entirely.

I can move the quotation section below the footer in the reply template but
that makes it part of the footer and changes its formatting accordingly. Does
someone have a trick to override that?

In addition to the main laundry list, I've been asked for a way to prevent The
Bat! from automatically filling in addresses/groups from the history of typed
addresses (should use address book only, so no one types addre...@example.com
and ends up with addre...@example.com, addre...@example.com,
addre...@example.com automatically filled in simply because the previous
message that they sent had all of those addresses in the TO field).

Note: Please don't tell me that some of these are non-standard ways to
configure email or that they are not the preferred practice. I know this but
have been told that these are acceptable business practice. I've been given the
task of fulfilling the laundry list with The Bat! or moving to an email program
that *will* fulfill the list. If someone happens to have excellent references
to evidence that an item is NOT an acceptable practice, I'd love to have said
references.

We're currently on 6.0.12 - upgrading is an option ONLY if I can fulfill most
if not all of the laundry list. Obviously, The Bat! does not have a sharable
calendar included in it but I'd be grateful for suggestions of ones that work
well in conjunction with The Bat!, either hosted or self-hosted.

Need serious help with upgrade to B-Pro 6.2.2

2014-01-02 Thread Robert D.
I had version 5.9  on one computer a 5.8 on the other. Bought (without
the
discount cuz I didn't see it available) 6.2

installed it on both Win7-64 bit computers.
Now all email accounts think they are POP3 when they are , or were,
IMAP4 .

I can not D/L emails from 1and1 nor GMX. The fail message is related to
TLS
refuses ... and/or another version of failure is Disconnected.
If I try to send an email, the message is not sent and the log show See
log for
details. That's funny an circular logic but does not help me guess
what's
wrong.

If I try to make repairs to any email account, TB-Pro shows the email
account as
POP3 no matter what I try. Thus, the new versions seemed to have
converted all
accounts to POP3.

So I was forced to delete all accounts and make new ones. At that point,
I
elected to not delete the files and folder. This as incorrect choice as
TBP
still made the new account POP3 and that was unchangeable as long as the
previous files and folders where there.

I had no choice but to delete them in order to be able to re-create
IMAP4. AND,
it seems then that all files containing the previous emails were
destroyed.

O how to I set up an imap4 for 1and1.

How do I set up a POP3 for GMX?

I have tried all variations of what each site publishes for Port
numbers. They
both claim SSL and there's no way I can see to make that choice in TBP.

if I am able once again to get and send email, what is the way to
re-introduce
any Restored Versions of past folders from all the email accounts?

I have been using TB for over ten ears. This us the one and only time an
upgrade
has brought my systems to a standstill. I will guess that the root of
the
problem is mine. But I can't for the life of me guess where I messed up
two
computers on one upgrade.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to

Help with removing old email addresses

2011-08-25 Thread Mike Greenbaum

I haven't been here in a long time, but I'm having a problem with old email
addresses which appear when I begin to address an email.

For example, if I start to write to John Smith, I may get the following choices
in the To: line--

johnsm...@yahoomail.com
johnsm...@googlemail.com
johnsm...@someotheraddress.com

I know how to change an address if it's in my address book, but these are
people to whom I've written in the past, and The Bat is giving me the choice of
using them. But some of those addresses might be old ones which are no longer
active, and I don't know how to delete them.

Consequently, I often choose the wrong address, and then the email gets bounced
back to me.

Can anyone help with deleting addresses which are not in my address book but
are suggested by The Bat from my history?

No problem - if you don't get it to work, then it's cumbersome. :) But the

Hi Jack,

Two points...

1. Creating an image of your running system is a good solution, but never
forget : it allow you to restore the whole working system, but on the same or
similar computer... when you need to move to a new system (another hardware /
another OS), you should reinstall from scratch your apps and reconfigure from
scratch, only restoring datas there's of course a lot of solutions
allowing you to (partly) restore settings, but you would have a much better
system if you do not try to adapt your old settings on the new system, but
directly adapt your datas for the new settings of the new system.

2. You may migrate a fat partition to NTFS without the need to reformat and
thus without loosing the datas on it... have a look at convert.exe
commandline utility what you need to know before : if you convert your USB
HDD to NTFS it could not be used anymore on something else than Windows... it
means you cannot use it anymore to connect to a PS3, DVD Player, TV, Photo
Frame, audio car system,... and it could be much more difficult to revert to
FAT than converting to NTFS, as windows itself does not allow natively to FAT32
format a partition bigger than 32GB...

I just re-read your post and now I'm confused. What's the difference between

Understood.

If I had had an image of the old laptop I could have simply replaced the blown
HDD and restored the image. However, since neither I nor my wife ever trusted
the old laptop (erratic operation), we felt safer buying a brand new laptop.
My problems (read confusion) came about because as I mentioned, the old laptop
had been upgraded from native Win XP to Win 7. My lack of knowledge of native
Win 7 caused me considerable consternation in trying to figure out how I had
managed to cause two PROGRAM FILES folders to appear on the C: drive.

If a similar HDD crash were to occur on this new laptop and I had an image of
the HDD before the crash, I would simply replace the HDD and restore from the
image. That would be my reasoning for creating an image of this new laptop. I
would create images, perhaps weekly, and then continue doing regular daily
routine (not image) backups.

The Western Digital Passport USB drive we use for backups on the laptop isn't
used for anything else so I wouldn't be losing any functionality by converting
to NTFS. But that information is good to know.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Jack,

From your message, i could point some errors you've made...

Your old laptop and your new one does not use the same system (32 bits vs 64
bits,...), and thus you cannot just restore any file/settings like that (and
certainly not any executable)...

\PROGRAM FILES folder is for program running natively on the system (on your
new system, 64 bits programs), when \PROGRAM FILES(x86) is for old 32 bits
programs...

Now you've placed some files of a 32bits program (The Bat!) in the 64 bits
folder, just the right way to have mistakes...

When you reinstall a new computer, you could of course restore your own data,
but you should not restore settings as settings are partly dependent of the
system. Settings from your old computer may not be adapted to your new
computer (it's the case here with the PF directory name).

For TheBat!, you have a backup/restore function to do what you want, much more
easily and without the need to pay HP for the support :)

Easy : on the old computer, you do a backup, on the new computer, you install
thebat, then you restore the backup. done :)

I did not know this. We bought the new laptop knowing that it would come with
Windows 7 installed but *NOT* realizing that it would be the 64 bit version.
Even had we known about it being 64 bit I would have automatically assumed that
it would function as the old 32 bit version did.

SB \PROGRAM FILES folder is for program running natively on the system (on
your new system, 64 bits programs), when \PROGRAM FILES(x86) is for old 32

When I was attempting to restore the old backup onto the new machine, the
Windows backup I had on my USB HDD didn't seem to work so I used the Carbonite
off-site backup to do the restore. Then when I had trouble getting TB! to work
I looked at the folders on the C: drive and was surprised to find a PROGRAM
FILES folder *AND* a PROGRAM FILES(x86) folder. Since I had no knowledge of
the structure of the 64 bit OS, I assumed I had somehow accidently created the
PF(x86) by first trying to do the restore with the old Windows backup,
abandoning that method and going with the Carbonite backup.

SB Now you've placed some files of a 32bits program (The Bat!) in the 64 bits
folder, just the right way to have mistakes...

Perhaps, but at least TB! now seems to be working properly. I have not yet
done a TB! backup but I'm thinking that might be a good idea and once
completed, flag the TB! backup as a file which should be included in the
on-going Carbonite backup. That way presumably I would have a TB! backup
stored off-site.

SB When you reinstall a new computer, you could of course restore your own
data, but you should not restore settings as settings are partly dependent of

Silly me. I thought the Windows backup would be sufficient. Thank goodness
for the Carbonite backup. In defence of the Windows backup however; I might
have gotten it to work had I more time to fool with it but I was under
tremendous pressure to get the new machine up and running as soon as possible.

SB Easy : on the old computer, you do a backup, on the new computer, you
install thebat, then you restore the backup. done :)

Words to remember.

In light of your obviously superior knowledge of Windows, I'd like to ask what

HP tech support.

It finally dawned on me that I might try exporting my wife's existing faulty
address book to a CSV file, clean up any oddball address problems (the
aforementioned blank contact) and then import it into a brand new address book.
However, silly me, I wanted to save the new address book in the same folder
the TB executable is in. Why? Oh I don't know. Maybe to keep all things BAT
together? OH! No, no, no. Bill Gates won't let me do that with his new 64bit
Windows 7 OS. I kept getting an error message that said I couldn't do that and
I had to contact the system administrator. I AM the system administrator.
Hence the $60 wasted on HP tech support only to have them tell me that that's
the way the OS is designed. Great, thanks a pantload.

Fortunately (I guess) Mr. Gates deigned to allow me to create a folder in the
C:\PROGRAM FILES(x86) folder, where the TB executable is located, and I called
it TB!-ADBs. Once that folder was created I then created a new address book and
saved it in that folder. I was then able to import from the cleaned-up CSV

Address book help

2010-07-14 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Fellow list members,

My wife's laptop just died and I have tried (almost successfully) to get the
new laptop up and running the way the old one was. I had been backing up the
old laptop using Carbonite and also using the Windows 7 backup utility backing
up to an external HDD thru a USB port. Neither Carbonite nor the MS backup was
saving everything but by performing a restore from the MS backup first and then
from the Carbonite backup (which took a couple of days to complete), I was able
to retrieve what I assumed to be most of the TB! files. Since the .exe file
was never backed up (apparently neither Carbonite nor the MS backup saves those
types of files) I had to re-install TB! from a copy I retained the last time we
upgraded (to 4.0.38). After the install I added her name as an account and
voila!, everything appeared to be back the way it was on the old laptop. All
of her folders and emails were there.

It was only later that I learned that new contacts added to the address book
are not retained the next time TB! is started. In addition, there's a
mysterious blank contact at the top of the list which can be deleted (it takes
several seconds to perform the delete) but will be there again the next time
TB! is started.

I have searched both the HDD backup files and the Carbonite backup files to no
avail. I cannot find her original .abd file in either of those two locations
so I am at a loss to even understand from where the file materialized in the
first place and yet, there it is.

This next point perhaps should be addressed to TBOT but it may have some
bearing here. The new laptop's HDD has two folders; one named PROGRAM FILES
and one named PROGRAM FILES(x86). Each folder contains a TB! folder but the
TB.exe is in the PFx86 folder. All of the .abd files are in the PF folder. I
copied her .abd file to the PF(x86) folder and selected it to be opened while I
was in in the address book window. I wound up with two identical address
books, both of which MALfunction exactly the same.

I don't know if it makes any difference but the old laptop was running XP and
was upgraded to Windows 7 while the new laptop came with Windows 7 already
installed. Does an OEM Windows 7 have two PF folders?

If there's someone out there who has been able to follow this convoluted
description and might have some ideas, I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

It doesn't like new lines, when hit enter and continue typing it
continues on the same line. To really start a new line you've got to
start a new paragraph: hit enter twice so you've got an empty line in
between.
When you start typing in the middle of some text it keeps on wrapping
everything correctly instead of what you experience with question 5.

Thanks for the response (thanks to everyone else also). Now you've
hit on the issue that I really want to resolve. Why can't the
developers add an extra option (checkbox) so that you don't have to
press enter twice to start a new line? Why can't I start a new line
by pressing it once? All it would be is a simple little option, and
it takes nothing away from the other features, it just adds to it.

When I asked for this as a support ticket, the answer I got was this:
Hello,

I am sorry to say, but this is not a bug, it's a feature of MicroEd.
Auto-Format works that way for years and we do not intend to change
that...

I don't quite understand why they would refuse to add an option for
this. Like I said, it doesn't take anything away. It just adds a
little feature to get rid of the nuisance of pressing enter twice.
Often times in an email, I have to make lists lik this:
item1
item2
item3

But I can't do it without either turning auto-format off or pressing
enter twice and then going back and deleting the extra lines. I mean,
is it really a big deal to add that option? i don't want to turn off
auto-format, because I want the wrapping to automatically adjust when
I go back to edit a paragraph. It just doesn't seem reasonable to me
to take such a stubborn stance with something so simple and helpful.
It's not like I'm asking for a lot and i think it's a pretty practical
issue. I don't feel it deserves a That's just the way it is and
we're not going to change it attitude.

My follow up response was this:
But couldn't there be an additional option added where we can have
all the features of auto-format and reflowing, but also be able to
press enter without it skipping back to the previous line? It
wouldn't take anything away from anything else, it would only add a
feature. please consider it. All it would have to be is another
checkbox like, Allow single carriage return.

Would anyone here support me in adding this feature? I need some
backup. Again, remember, nothing would change, it will just be an
additional option.

Basically, because we're using plain text in the message, no fancy

possible to differentiate to a line break that's inserted manually or
one that's inserted automatically.

That's why one line break is ignored and why two line breaks are

We all work slightly differently and have different preferences. I
like MicroEd with Auto-Format turned off so that a line ends when I
say it ends if that is sooner than I have chosen for default wrapping.
On the odd occasion that I edit a paragraph, it is no bother to
re-wrap it with ALT+L.

When I am composing, the editor wraps lines in a paragraph at my specified

paragraphs are sent *without* wrapping. Thus my correspondents see lines
that either wrap at *their* window edges or extend off the window to the

Now I'm confused. Are you using MicroEd? If so, there is no need to

And yes, a new paragraph starts after 2 line feeds, that's normal

there is even a grammar rule about it.

Question #2:

Question #3:
Why can't the paragraphs wrap to the window size rather than a certain

Question #4:
Sometimes I write an email, it looks fine. But when the other person
recieves it, the wrapping is all crazy with alternating long/short
lines. As if one of my lines was being wrapped before it should be
and the leftover spills over to the next line.

Question #5:
Why do we have to use Alt-L to reformat the wrapping if you go back

automatically. Is this a MicroEd thing, or does it happen with the
Windows editor also?

Mainly the wrapping and the free caret (in MicroEd you can place the

That way your contact will see what you see as the size of his window

It's also for compatibility with text mode systems and prevents
problems with PGP for instance.

Maybe the person is reading the message in an application that wraps
at the window edge. If the line length in the message is a bit longer
than his window width, the rest of that line spills onto the next line
of his display. Then another new line starts on his screen where the
message text begins a new line.

Alternatively, look at these messages in the Outbox or the Sent folder
to see if your copy has alternating long and short lines, too. If it
is a message you have gone back and edited but not reformatted with
ALT+L (assuming you are not using auto-format) then TB! will have
wrapped any excessively long lines but maybe not to the width in your
editor settings. I have TB! set to wrap at 70 characters but in the
case just outlined, overly long lines are wrapped at something like 96
characters when the message is sent or saved to Outbox.

R Here's what I want to do
R I want certain folders, when opened from ANY APPLICATION to always
R open with thumbnails enabled the way MY PICTURES does.

R This can be set to happen in windows explorer or My Computer but it
R will not carry over to other programs such as The Bat

R I have a specific folder I use for my animations and it always
R opens as a list even though it is set in windows as a photo album.
R Does anyone know the setting or registry entry so I don't have to
R constantly change this to Thumbnails each time I access the folder from a
program?

Here using Win XP pro I go to START CONTROL PANEL FOLDER OPTIONS
and click on the VIEW tab. Near the bottom of the folder options is a
one which says Remember each folder's view settings.

Although for me that selection was already ticked, I too had been
having problems with photo folders opening showing DETAILS instead of
thumbnails regardless of which state they were in when I last closed
them. I un-ticked the option and then re-ticked it which caused the
APPLY button to become active. I clicked on APPLY and closed CONTROL
PANEL. I then went to a pictures folder and opened it (it opened in
DETAILS view) and changed the view to THUMBNAILS and closed the
folder. When I re-opened the folder, it was still set to THUMBNAILS. I
changed the VIEW to DETAILS, closed the folder and then re-opened it
to find that it was still set to DETAILS. I changed the VIEW again
back to THUMBNAILS, closed the folder and then re-opened it to find
the view still set to THUMBNAILS.

So it would seem that somewhere along the way that option became
corrupted. It appears that un-ticking and re-ticking the Remember
each folder's view settings has fixed the corruption.

Thanks for your question, it's helped me and might help you.

Filter Help needed

2009-03-12 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

I am hoping for some clarification re filter rules.

I would like to streamline emails generated on a website to different
accounts ( in my bat and external) depending on who works on them.
I set up some filter but I am afraid I have not fully understood the
way they should work in sequence.
My current set up is:

1) known _ if address book contains sender move to inbox known
2) subject contains skipped move to folder A
3) subject contains mail delivery or header contains mailer daemon
or text contains successful delivery notifications or text contains
fatal error move to Folder Bounce
4) text contains new address or text contains new account info
forward message to other email address A
5) recipient contains xyz forward to email address B

All filters are set to continue processing with other filters.

Should I use forward message to other email or redirect? What is the
difference? Does forward just mean a copy will be sent but the
original email is still going into the folder and then will be
processed by the next filter? My idea is to direct the emails to
whoever is working on them without creating duplicates or cluttering
the original mailbox. So if filter rule 3 is met, the journey ends in
folder Bounce but otherwise rule 4 should apply.

So if filter rule 3 is met, the journey ends in folder Bounce but
 otherwise rule 4 should apply.

You should then set filter 3 to NOT continue processing with other
filters

Yes, about 50% of the apps I use are on the D drive - they either
don't need to be installed or it's a simple process of backing them up
and exporting the registry - like with TheBat. Gets me back up to
speed quickly after a re-install. Installing apps on the D drive gets
round a lot of Vista issues as well, it means my PC still belongs to
me, not MSFT.

 Well, that's good to know. But doesn't REGEDIT's export/import
function overwrite the registry when you import from a previously
 exported registry file?

Yes, it over-writes the tree of the registry. It doesn't contain the
actual messages though, just pointers to the folders and preferences.

Help-Partial message loss!

2008-11-15 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Fellow list members,

My wife had messages dated from 10-31 to 11-13 disappear from her
inbox. All other messages seem to be there. There are only 5 messages
currently residing in the inbox with a received date of Nov. and all
were from yesterday the 14th.

I did a search of *all* TB! folders for the string Bob in the header
because she remembers a message having come from Bob yesterday the
14th but it couldn't be found.

I looked on her C: drive in the folder called The Bat! contained in
the program files folder but I don't see anything in the The Bat!
folder which would seem to contain all messages.

I use Carbonite as a backup for this computer so presumably Carbonite
has a copy of the missing messages but again, I can't see where
they're stored. The Carbonite The Bat! folder contains exactly the
same things as the The Bat! folder on her C: drive. Where does TB!
keep all it's messages?

Assuming the location of the messages is known, can I simply copy the
messages from the Carbonite backup to the same location on her C:
drive?

Her computer is running the Vista OS with version 3.99.3 of TB!
installed.

I think in very early versions of TB! the mail was there. Since I
discovered TB! at version 2.x the default has been %appdata%\The Bat!,
which might even equate to %email%. For each mail folder you should
find a messages.tbb and messages.tbi file (different extensions if you
use OTFE). The TBB file is the message base and the TBI is the index

I know nothing about carbonite but I would expect so if a backup was
made when the messages were present, unless the backup was overwritten
since they disappeared.

Assuming the location of the messages is known, can I
simply copy the messages from the Carbonite backup to
the same location on her C: drive?

I would suggest renaming the message.tbb and .tbi files currently in
the folder (in case you need to revert to them) and copying the ones
from your backup into the folder, then firing up TB! and seeing what
messages you have.
