Hi Alexandru,

Although some of you use spice instead of VNC, as I am an Ubuntu user on
my desktop and laptop, spice protocol is not working withing my OS; even
if I tried to build it from source, search unofficial deb packs or
convert if from rpm packages. I know spice is strongly supported on the
Fedora community, but I, myself on the server side work on RH Enterprise
and Centos, but as for desktop use, I have a very hard time make the
spice plugin for firefox to work.

Therefore for my solution I had setup a VNC reflector + some shell
automation to make it work between 2 different subnets (one inside and
one outside) -- this, somehow, adding to the initial scope.

This would have been much more easier to have a VNC proxy inside the
ovirt engine function, from where to make the necessary setups and
assignments of the console to each VM, or even though I might sound
funny to make a solution as vrde on Vbox, because works damn great and
it's easy to setup or change.

Last question, If I might ask, when is the 3.2 planned to be released
(aprox)

I've seen a pdf document describing how to configure Red Hat Cluster and GFS

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-09 Thread Joern Ott
Hey Sigbjorn,

I currently use a cluster of two management nodes with a classical
corosync/pacemaker/drbd setup which also provides DNS, DHCP, TFTP, all
repositories we need to install our VMs and the central configuration
management.
We have a failover IP (and hostname) and our cluster makes sure that all
databases/services which need to be kept together are running on one host.

However, setting up something like this is a quite complex process, so having a
postgresql cluster (at least with postgres 9+) is not too difficult to set up
and then having a redundant engine cluster would be a perfect solution.

For me, I'd like to see official rpms for RHEL6/CentOS6. According to
the traffic on this list quite a lot are using Dreyou's packages.

I'm going to second this strongly! Official support would be very much
appreciated. Bonus points for supporting a migration from the dreyou
packages. No offense to dreyou, of course, just rather be better supported
by the official line on Centos 6.x.

EL6 rpms are planned to be delivered with 3.2 GA version, and nightly
builds from there on.
hopefully we can push it to 3.2 beta.

 Moran.

Better support/integration of windows based SPICE clients would also be
much appreciated, I have many end users on Windows, and it's been a chore
to keep it working so far. This includes the client drivers for windows VMs
to support the SPICE display for multiple displays. More of a client side
thing, I know, but a desired feature in my environment.

Thanks for the continued progress and support as well!

a deal-breaker for hypervisors that are trying to rejoin the cluster)

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-07 Thread Karli Sjöberg
A general +1 for every point basically. Very good and thought through points.
The ones I like the most are:

* Spice client- and plugin for Firefox on Windows and Ubuntu
* Preferrably working through both Admin- and User(customer) portal;)
* Guest Agent for Windows. Most of our VMs are Win2008- and R2, 2012's are
coming too.
* Host Profiles would be a time saver
* Resource Pools
* Clone VM's
* Resizing VM disks from GUI
* Upload ISO's from GUI
* Integrate virt-v2v into GUI
* Edit VM settings before import

Also I would like to make a wish of my own:
* Time-share scheduling.
- The ability to rent out resources available only during N window of time
for different groups of users. Our users tend to only need resource capacity in
batches, crunching their numbers or whatnot during an intence period of time
and can be quiet for a while, then come back for some more. That´s why I would
like to see an interface where we as an organization could pool together our
metal into oVirt and then together sit down and schedule it so that everyone
gets their pice of the cake, so to speak. E.g. Group X rents 64 vCPU's and 4TB
RAM from 20130601 to 20130801, during which time they are guaranteed those
resources, and then those machines will expire and be automatically deleted,
freeing up those resources again. Something like that would make collaboration
between our different groups much easier.

Best Regards and Happy New Year!

Hi,

First of all thanks for starting this discussion.

My feedback is mainly based on RHEV, as I'm using RHEV in our company
and on customer side. oVirt is cool as I can see what new features next
RHEV version may/will bring and what issues other users have with this
technology.

What I like:
* web based UI
* KVM as it brings the highest virtualization performance on the market
* RHEL/Fedora as a hypervisor for more flexibility
* tags and bookmarks with search filters - great for big installations
* server and desktop virtualization can be done with one gui
* open source of course ;)
* hook scripts - sooo cool!
* rest-api
* user portal - some of our customers use this as a basic cloud tool for
providing vms and self-provisioning features with accounting using
postgresql database

What I would like to see in future release in oVirt and after testing in
RHEV (most of these points are based on customer feedback, too, who
bought RHEV or where we had at least a pre-sales appointment):

* Spice-XPI for Firefox on Windows (and maybe Ubuntu):
I know it's a lot of work to build it for every new firefox version, but
providing it for Firefox LTS would be a really good start. At the moment
Internet Explorer ist required for full use of admin und user portal (or
VNC has to be used).

* ovirt-guest-agents for major Linux distributions:
- openSUSE

I know that this would require major changes due to how oVirt works

Several topics come to mind:

- cleaner work-flow in creating and associating storage, especially NFS

- better error reporting from engine back to admin user during admin operations.

- the ability to have users access consoles of virtual machines whereever
they may be. I think it should be expected that limited access data centers
will be everywhere, from complete NAT'd environments to some with external
firewalls that limit some ports. This should be part of engine and
hypervisor installation, and transparent to the end user.

What I haven't seen mentioned yet is any Open vSwitch or Openstack

Hi all,

What I like:

  Its open!
both "thin" oVirt node and "fat" Linux+VDSM.
  Browser based GUI, Firefox supported.
  Spice console works just fine!

What I really would like to include in the coming releases:

Option to resize disk in user interface and CLI.

Import, upload, raw and qcow2 images from the web gui and CLI.
Importing VMDK (vmWare) would be nice as well.
Upload ISO from the web gui.
What about exporting raw and qcow2 images (and convert to
vmdk)...

Option to disable "This Browser version isn't optimal for
displaying the application". Ater 10 times it gets anoying.

Better recovery for the ISO and export domains. Currently, if
I keep my export domain connected a crashing server might cause
problems. After creating a new server en reconnecting the old
export or iso domain, it will say "it is allready connected to
another domain". The export domain is such a nice way to backup
important templates and virtual machines :)

  Multiple ISO domains.
Both export and ISO domains on local storage, iSCSI, CIFS etc.

Looking forward to the new release!

Hi!There are many promising features in oVirt, but still I feel it is just "promising", not for production. The most critical issue for me, that is preventing me from using oVirt in production, is the "single point of failure" of the engine. I wouldn't want the struggle of setting up a new engine, and all the hazards that brings, in a production environment, in the case of an engine failureSo, some sort of clustered engine, or master/slave, or whatever can solve this situation.Perhaps one of the reasons this is difficult is because of the integration of both admin portal and user portal? Then I believe it was a mistake to combine them, and that it would be better to split them.Rgrds JohanOp 03-01-13 17:08, Itamar Heim schreef:

Easier import of existing Nodes back into a new oVirt Engine would be great
- it's a complete mess at the moment (if one doesnt have a backup) - I'm
looking at this from VMware users point of view, with them, all you need to
do is point it at a server and it'll import everything that's already
there - oVirt should have the same capabilities / with some confirmation
screens that it belongs to another storage domain, etc. etc. and if one
wants to force it, but it should still be possible ...

as of now on 10.8 i have to use VNC which is not ideal. I now spice

What do you mean? a client or a browser plugin?

i suppose ideally both - a browser plugin would be great as then interaction
between the GUI and the console would be seamless with the ability to use a

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-04 Thread Koch (ovido)
Hi,

First of all thanks for starting this discussion.

My feedback is mainly based on RHEV, as I'm using RHEV in our company
and on customer side. oVirt is cool as I can see what new features next
RHEV version may/will bring and what issues other users have with this
technology.

What I like:
* web based UI
* rest-api

- openSUSE
- SLES
- Ubuntu
- Debian

* Virtualize ovirt-engine on ovirt hosts
I know that this would require major changes due to how oVirt works

When installing new hosts (via CD or PXE) the profile can be used to
automatically configure the host without providing all settings via boot
options + configure all networks, custom multipath.conf,... Host profile
should be used for full RHEL/Fedora hosts as well.

- Update RHEL/Fedora Hypervisors from GUI
It would be nice if Fedora hosts could be updated from the ovirt-engine
GUI like the ovirt Node. Running yum check-update on host and displaying
notice if there are updates available.

- Implement resource pools
At the moment only Quotas are available (which is great, btw), but in
some cases it's necessary to implement resource pools. E.g. Limit CPU,
Memory and Network for group of test vms, but give full resources to
production vms. This could be done with cgroups.

- Clone vms
I'm missing the possibility of cloning vms without creating a template.

- Resize disk in GUI
Increasing the size of a disk would help a lot. At the moment I create
new disks and put it into volume group on vm, but resizing would be
nicer in some cases and will reduce the number of disks.

- Upload ISOs within the GUI to ISO domain

- Integrate virt-v2v into oVirt GUI
It would be cool if VMs could be Migrated from other systems within the
GUI using virt-v2v as a backend.

- Edit settings of vms before importing them
Most the of the settings like disk type (IDE/VirtIO), nic but also vm
type (server/desktop) and access protocol (Spice/VNC) can't be edited
withing oVirt/RHEVM GUI before importing them. These settings can only
be changed by editing the xml directly. Disk type and nic is risky of
course, but working for most Linux

yes, it will see a different cpu model. why is that an issue?

I assume the solution for this could be a generic cluster definition.

 2) Resize VM disk from GUI ovirt-engine;
 3) Spice for Google Chrome, this browser run in anywere O.S. and

spice-xpi 2.8 will support chrome/chromium but it will still be linux-only.

Good/useful: Open Source virtualization with a strong web management
interface. Rapidly improving, too.

wish improved: SPICE connection reliability and LDAPS support.

wish added: native ATA-over-Ethernet SAN support.

wish removed: Kerberos dependencies. Let people who want Kerb have

But I'm really looking forward to oVirt 3.2 (reading all those commit

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-03 Thread Adrian Gibanel
This is what I'm missing right now in oVirt 3.1:

Better GlusterFS support.
===
1. Add a checkbox when creating a volume: Set oVirt permissions so that the
vdsm : kvm permissions are set. I don't want it to be per-default because I'd
like to use Volumes tabs as a Volumes manager for Glusterfs volumes and not
only Glusterfs volumes aimed at virtual machines.

From: http://blog.jebpages.com/archives/ovirt-3-1-glusterized/ :
( For now, the Gluster volume manager neglects to set brick directory
permissions correctly, so after adding bricks on a machine, you have to return
to the terminal and run chown -R 36.36 /data (assuming /data is where you are
storing your volume bricks) to enable oVirt to write to the volumes. )

2. Add a quota tab in Volumes. So that you can enable/disable/edit its quota:
http://www.gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Gluster_3.2:_Enabling_Quota

http://gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Gluster_3.2:_Managing_Directory_Quota

All In One (AIO) bigger timeout
===
From:
http://blog.jebpages.com/archives/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-1-edition/

( I’ve found that the all-in-one installer sometimes times out during the
install process. If the script times out during the final “AIO: Adding Local
host (This may take several minutes)” step, you can proceed to the web admin
console to complete the process. If it times out at an earlier point, like
waiting for the jboss-as server to start, you should run “engine-cleanup” and
then re-run “engine-setup”)
and my quote:

(Before running engine-setup you have to edit:
/usr/share/ovirt-engine/scripts/plugins/ all_in_one_100.py
file and edit the waitForHostUp function so that the timeout is smaller. Like
this:
def waitForHostUp():
utils.retry(isHostUp, tries=40, timeout=300, sleep=5))

Installation on disable SElinux
==
If SElinux is disabled then oVirt installation does not work. So I think that
either is advised to use it or... it's fixed so that it works even without
SElinux.

All-in-one script should take care of last steps
==
Not sure about this last point but I think that AIO should be able to perform
the iso domain attachment to the datacenter in itself.
Check 5th step on:
http://blog.jebpages.com/archives/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-1-edition/

There might be more glitches but these are the most important ones for me that
I remember of.

Guide me help texts
==
One more. The Guide me dialogs are very handy. But I think they miss a little
help on them to explain such stupid things as what's the purpose of adding an
storage domain a datacenter.

I'm going to second this strongly! Official support would be very much
appreciated. Bonus points for supporting a migration from the dreyou packages.
No offense to dreyou, of course, just rather be better supported by the
official line on Centos 6.x.

Better support/integration of windows based SPICE clients would also be much
appreciated, I have many end users on Windows, and it's been a chore to keep it
working so far. This includes the client drivers for windows VMs to support the
SPICE display for multiple displays. More of a client side thing, I know, but a

find good/useful in oVirt, and what they would like to see
improved/added in coming versions?

Thanks,
   Itamar

For me, I'd like to see official rpms for RHEL6/CentOS6. According to
the traffic on this list quite a lot are using Dreyou's packages.

I'm going to second this strongly! Official support would be very much
appreciated. Bonus points for supporting a migration from the dreyou
packages. No offense to dreyou, of course, just rather be better
supported by the official line on Centos 6.x.

Better support/integration of windows based SPICE clients would also be
much appreciated, I have many end users on Windows, and it's been a
chore to keep it working so far. This includes the client drivers for
windows VMs to support the SPICE display for multiple displays. More of
a client side thing, I know, but a desired feature in my environment.

these would be guest drivers for spice, rather than client ones, right?

Thanks for the continued progress and support as well!

per-default because I'd like to use Volumes tabs as a Volumes manager
for Glusterfs volumes and not only Glusterfs volumes aimed at virtual

From: http://blog.jebpages.com/archives/ovirt-3-1-glusterized/ :
( For now, the Gluster volume manager neglects to set brick directory
permissions correctly, so after adding bricks on a machine, you have to
return to the terminal and run chown -R 36.36 /data (assuming /data is
where you are storing your volume bricks) to enable oVirt to write to
the volumes. )

This feature is available in 3.2. Enabling a checkbox to optimize
gluster volume for oVirt will set vdsm:kvm permissions on bricks that
are part of the volume.

2. Add a quota tab in Volumes. So that you can enable/disable/edit its
quota:

http://gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Gluster_3.2:_Managing_Directory_Quota

Noted. We will address this in a subsequent release.

It was more or less obvious the feature was going to be there because seems
easy to implement but I couldn't check it yet.

Yes, I should have said guest drivers for spice, mixing my throughs on spice
clients with the guest VMs themselves. Best way I can think of to describe it
would be the ovirt equivalent of rhev-guest-tools-iso-3.0-37.noarch.rpm or
whatever version they are on now.

spice-spice upstream has a guest tools installer that includes the inguest

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-03 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Dear Itamar,

I would like to add a request for the new upper coming version 3.2 if
possible:

(aprox)?

Cordially,
Alex.

I think a IPAM is mandatory, so that the VM can grab their IP without human

Hi,

Deploying multiple VMs from 1 template at the same time. Currently you have to
wait until the template image is available again.
