iTunes tells me to use itunes:block - how do I Actually do this?

 From the docs:

itunes:block
Use this inside a channel element to prevent the entire podcast
from appearing in the iTunes Podcast directory. Use this inside an
item element to prevent that episode from appearing in the iTunes
Podcast directory. For example, you may want a specific episode
blocked from iTunes if it's content might cause the feed to be
removed from iTunes

http://phobos.apple.com/static/iTunesRSS.html

Wouldn't know how to do this through Feedburner as I've never used it
- I'd recommend using Garrick Van Buren's WP-iPodCatter Plugin instead:

http://garrickvanburen.com/wpipodcatter/

It'll give you complete control over the RSS feed. No need for the
Feedburner middleman.

[videoblogging] Surpassing the 100th video milestone

2006-01-13 Thread Andy Carvin
Hi everyone,

A colleague asked me this morning how many videos I've posted on my
blog, and I honestly didn't know; I guessed I'd done around 60 or 70. So
I went to my blog's archive and counted them. It turns out I've actually
just surpassed 100 videos - 102 from 14 countries, to be precise:

Tunisia: 15
Bangladesh: 5
Scotland: 9
Ghana: 9
South Korea: 3
United Arab Emirates: 6
Hungary: 5
Mauritius: 1
India: 2
Switzerland: 2
Germany: 1
Estonia: 1
Hong Kong: 4
USA: 39

Here's all 102 of them, in case you're interested.

http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/video/

Meanwhile, I've got two more videos I've just completed for a multimedia
story I'm doing for the Associated Press about spending the night in
Luke Skywalker's house in Matmata, Tunisia. (Luke's house from the first
Star Wars movie is actually a hotel in a Berber village.) Will let you
know when they're posted.

Needless to say, I'm pretty jazzed about reaching the three-digit
milestone; wonder how long it'll take me to get to 1000

[videoblogging] LO-FI Re-Runs in February

2006-01-13 Thread Bill Streeter
I have this idea for doing a re-run month on my vlog. I'm going to
post a re-run of some of my posts from the last year every day in the
month of February (the month of Ground Hog day after all and the month
my vlog turns 1 year old). And I was thinking about how to get others
involved. So I thought that maybe it would be cool to have other
vloggers record introductions to the videos and I can tack them on to
the begining of each video when I re-post them. So I guess I'm looking
for 28 vloggers to do intros to the various videos I'm gonna repost in
February. They can be up to 1 minute and they can plug their own vlogs
etc and cross post (or not).

If you are interested in participating let me know. I think I'll
assign each a post to introduce to avoid multiple people choosing the
same ones. So email me at bill[at]webfu[dot]com.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlogging with Flash

2006-01-13 Thread Jay dedman
We've been through this before. I distribute my SWF files via RSS without
 trouble. They get downloaded plenty.

deirdre...maybe the better way to put it is this.
Flash is a fine format..and can be distributed in RSS feeds.
but Macromedia needs to do some education if they want it used by creators.

For the most part, Flash is being used to protect video...and most
video services using flash do not let the Flash be downloaded through
feeds.
(see Youtube.com)

Flash also cannot take advantage of syncing to devices until a Flash
iPod is created or transcoding becomes common.

Flash is also not the easiest to create. it is not standard in most
editing tools that i know of.

Macromedia(which owns Flash) does prohibit encoding and playing in flash format:
http://www.macromedia.com/licensing/developer/fileformat/faq/#item-1-8

Q. Can I use the File Format Specification to create a SWF interpreter
or player?
A. No, the File Format Specification is provided for the specific
purpose of enabling software applications to export to the Macromedia
Flash File Format (SWF).

Q.Can I use the File Format Specification to create a Flash Video
encoder or a Flash Video streaming service?
A. No, the File Format Specification is provided for the specific
purpose of enabling software applications to export to the Macromedia
Flash File Format (SWF).

i'm wondering if that's not standard language for such hosting sites. i'll bet if you look at the others you'll find their lawyers included the same language. i see it elsewhere.

what harm would such language cause the user of such a hosting service?

btw, IANAL but wouldn't those bits in your agreement to enable you to sell your site or merge it into a new entity without breaching you agreement with your users?

Re: [videoblogging] http://youare.tv/

2006-01-13 Thread Brad Webb
Well, like I said, we don't have it. The thing that would bother me,
personally, is the fact that should I decide, later, that I don't like
something I produced, or don't want it distributed any more, I gave them
the right to keep that content and publish it. Transferable + revokable
= fine. What if they sold to, say, a porn company, would you want your
video blogs mashed up with some porn to push them as an edgy media
provider??? =) Under the terms, that'd be totally legit, and you
couldn't stop them from doing it from the point of upload.

Also, forced mashupability isn't something I'm personally down with,
either. People wanna do it, that's *their choice* -- not mine, for them.

Strictly speaking, this is from me, Brad, the video blogger (ugh I so
need to edit and upload like 15 things) -- vs me, Brad, vSocial Guy. I
don't see the benefit to the lock-in that would exist from a TC like
this -- and the standard response from other services who have done one
of these is oh, well duh, we never meant it that way.. who doesn't let
a geek go through a TC before publishing on the network? =)

[videoblogging] Crankin' vlogging up to 11

2006-01-13 Thread Eric Rice
Hi folks,

It's been a ton of fun here at Macworld, with some of the usual suspects
pimpin' vloggin
and various products and such. Wish all of you could have been here.

With that, I wanna pimp something I'm pretty proud of, especially in light of
all the recent
debates on flash video and RSS and such.

Over at Audioblog.com, we've enabled folks to upload video and post it to their
blog via a
flash player. And because of that, I've generally been reluctant to make too
much noise
about it here (well that, and I don't wanna be too spammy-- don't worry, I
won't start :P )

Yesterday, we turned on some new features including, enabling links to the
video file to
appear under the flash player (this is for the feedburner follks). Or, you
could just upload
video and post it directly to a pure RSS feed.

The other thing is that we'll on-the-fly transcode pretty much any video format
into
Quicktime, ready to go for the video-capable iPod.

I tend to believe we *can* have it both ways. Most visitors click the flash
player on my site
(especially first time ones), as well as folks who want to be able to take the
video with
them, watch it where ever, or do whatever with it (since I'm encouraging of
remix/mashup
culture from time to time). I'm just happy I don't have to hack it manually,
and it's all on-
the-fly.

It took a little longer than expected, however, I'm okay with that. I hope it
works flawlessly
for any of you as it has for us assaulting it with sledgehammers and
flamethrowers during
testing. :-)

Thanks for the good words and support we've received this far. The servers are
running a
bit on the hot side, but we're on the case.

Cheers,

[videoblogging] Backstaging Live: iLife 06 review 1/14 after videoconf

2006-01-13 Thread Eric Rice
It was a last minute thing to use live streaming audio + IRC + flickr to do a
little
presentation on the Epsilon Construct theory I've been working on. A
backchannel fired up
on IRC, Raymond called the studio line over skype, and IMs filled my screen
while people
poured over a simple annotated photo I posted on my flickr stream. As a joke, I
called it
Eric Rice Media Saturday, and didn't really think it was a big deal. Apparently
I was wrong.

So I got to thinking about it, and people like Raymond and others have offered
some
awesome encouragement, that I decided to add something to my Backstaging.com
DIY
vlog--- and that's an hour long, live show / podcast where I can talk
about/ramble in
greater detail on a topic that extends beyond the 3-6 minute videos. (On a side
note, we'll
be doing the Eric Rice Show podcast simultaneously live while recording.)

Each Saturday at 2pm PST/5pm EST/10pm GMT, after the Videoblogger Video
Conference,
I'll spend an hour doing a live show on KSSX, capturing it for later
distribution down the
Backstaging RSS feed, which will now be a hybrid feed.

This weekend will be initial commentary and whatnot about Apple's new iLife
'06,
including Garageband, iMovie, iWeb, plus a couple other things including this
new tapeless
digicam I picked up at Macworld (Supacam DVX).

I hope you can join me and call in with your thoughts.

And thanks for your support and encouragement, gang. It's how things get done.

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Groovy, it sounds like youve got the right blend of different
technologies glued together in the rigt way, to provide the sort of
'best of both worlds' solution that can leverage the strengths of a
few different formats.

I havent tried your service myself, I wonder what the quality is like
if you are using (at a guess) Flash Communication Server to do the
uploading bit? I long for the day that there are more alternatives to
the 'easy upload through browser' part of the equation, than most
providers having to rely on Flash Comms Server (now Media Server with
new extra-silly license).

[videoblogging] Re: Looking for any videoblogs that are a higher resolution

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Cheers, they look good, by being higher resolution it was possible to
see the show properly, actually see what people were demonstrating
without either low resolution or a murky band of compression artifacts
dimming the view.

The browser plugin works well ont he 3Ghz Intel Dualcore PC Im
testing, fullscreen mode looks good. I was initially alamed by long
buffering times, but I think my net connection or the divx server were
struggling at the time.

This is quite a good leap for DivX, progressive download of DivX stuff
in browser was a major requirement for DivX to be a good videoblogging
recommendation. I look forward to the Mac version.

As for playing the CES blog HD version on a mac outside the browser,
it worked good for me on a 2Ghz G5 iMac just so long as I used VLC or
Mplayer rather than Quicktime.

I cant quickly compare DivX's 720P videos with Apples H264 720P ones,
because Apple decided to use a higher bitrate for theirs. So I'll have
to do my own comparisons, maybe I get time this weekend.

If I do get back to videoblogging it will be in High Definition as
well as more standard resolutions, and I will probably offer it in
several formats. If everything works out with the DivX licensing
stuff, and the encoding speed is good (which Im guessing it will be),
then it will probably be one of the formats I go for I guess.

Cheers

Hey Guys,

Sorry for the super long post...

I am with YouAreTV, and I wanted to give you a brief on what we are
doing. We actually want to be very different than youtube and google
video. When we first started we wanted to be like all of the companies
out there, but we realized that all of the user experiences really
suck right now. We want to provide an experience that does allow you
to find the content you want easier.

To answer your comments,

seems lke evryone is copying youtube. no feeds. no permalink directly
to video.
its all on their page. i guess its for people who dont want their own
blog...just upload to their site.

We are adding user page perma links, video page perma links, and
individual page permalinks. We are also looking at adding rss feeds
based on keyowrds, favorites and videos. Our goal is to allow you to
Get your video out there.
And when people are on YouAreTV, we want to enable you to create
communities and interest within the YouAreTV site. Right now
individuals selling content wont work because no one knows or cares
about your content, if you are able to generate interest within a
trusted community like YouAreTV people WILL be more willing to
purchase individually created content. We have seen examples of this
with Amazon and Ebay.

and i cant tell who own the content once its up:
http://youare.tv/terms.php;

You own your content. You will always own your content. Think of
yourself as a media company, and YouAreTV as simply a distribution
channel. By uploading to YouAreTV, you are giving us the right to
extend the reach of your video to all mediums that YouAreTV reaches
now, and will reach in the future even beyond simple web pages.

We are building this site for you, the content creator, and we
honestly want to hear your feedback. The only way we can make is
better is by hearing from you. So if you do have quesetions, or
comments please leave us a message at http://www.youare.tv/ideas.php

[videoblogging] Re: http://youare.tv/

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Welcome,

Well this is the problem. Some people wont be happy with that. Whilst
they remain they owner of the footage, they give you pretty much the
rights to do whatever you like with that video once they publish it
using your service.

If you got a deal on TV in future, you could show all the content that
people have published using your service, without giving them anything
extra. If you ran some cheesy TV adverts you could include bits of
peoples videos to promote your service.

From what I can tell you could also license other parties to make use
of the video, without needing the original creators consent.

This stuff does not make you evil, nor will you necessarily do any of
these things. Some people will have no problem with these terms, but
some people will and so its only fair to bring this kind of thing to
their attention before they use the service.

Then there is also the issue that not everybody supports derivative
works or wants that right automatically granted to other people. If
your site is entirely centered on mash-up stuff, then it makes sense
to make it a general part of the license. But you might consider
making it optional?

Cheers

commercial use of this stuff ain't cheap.
I've looked into it too. Depends though.. everything's a negotiation.
Its certainly less expensive to license this encoding technology on
the server side (one license) than to do so for a client side
application (license to distribute multiple copies).

Macromedia(which owns Flash) does prohibit encoding and playing in
 flash format:

  A. No, the File Format Specification is provided for the specific
purpose of enabling software applications to export to the Macromedia

[videoblogging] Re: http://youare.tv/

2006-01-13 Thread esteban_k2
Steve,

Thanks for the input. We'll certainly take a look at our terms.
However, this idea of rights for specific channel and don't touch
my content characteristics of old media companies, and explains why
they attempt the lock distribution channels, google had to develop
their own DRM scheme, and you can't play video you purchased through
their store on any of your portable devices, you have to purchase a
CD, Ringtone, and digital version of the same song, and and why today
the RIAA is suing 13 year olds. We don't believe in that at YouAreTV.

YouAreTV is not in business to rip off our content creators. Our goal
is to help you actually monetize your content down the line. Our
objective to do that is through distribution through many channels,
and allowing the viewers to consume that content in the way they choose.

Hope this helps, and please keep the great input coming!

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Welcome,

Well this is the problem. Some people wont be happy with that. Whilst
they remain they owner of the footage, they give you pretty much the
rights to do whatever you like with that video once they publish it
 using your service.

[videoblogging] Re: http://youare.tv/

2006-01-13 Thread esteban_k2
We are neither producers or lawyers. All we want to do is help users
get their video out there. That is our mission.

This is the first time EVER in history that individuals have had the
reach through video that they have had.

Imagine someone reporting from india when the earthquakes happen, or
from France when the riots happened. We think this is very powerful
and will one day provide better news than CNN, MSNBC or FOX. And
because this is all so new, we all still are figuring out a model that
is equitable for everyone.

All I want to say is that we don't have all of the answers, and are
still figuring it out. But we won't know until we see great content
that is on par with TV produced and consumed. In order to do that we
must ensure that everything we do is fair and equitable. And I promise
you, we will figure that out.

But I do ask, that before you make a blanket statement about us being
EVIL, please shoot us a question. We are readily available to
respond to email probably 21 hours out of the day. You can submit your
questions here:

I really do hate to get into this over a message board.

But the terms basically say:

1. You have rights to whatever you upload.
2. You will always have those rigthts.
3. The stuff you upload you give YouAreTV NON-EXCLUSIVE rights to
distribute that content.

With Current TV and other sites they lock your content up EXCLUSIVELY
for 3-6 months.

Read the agreement, and this will not fit for everyones content, and
in that case maybe you CAN find a better want to distribute it, and
thats fine with us. This might not be the best channel.

I'm with you. Words like perpetual and irrevocable should always set
off warning lights for any potential users.

Not to mention that kind of wording is incompatible with many uses of CC
licensed material. Say I find a song licensed as by-nc. I say cool, I'll
use that in my video. Then I upload to YouAreTv and I've already given
away rights for the song that were not mine to give away! That's...

2006-01-13 Thread Andrew Baron
Perhaps I have misunderstood though it seems you have avoided my question:

1. Do you, youare.tv, get perpetual rights to the material? Yes?

The reason why this is so terrible for the content creator can be illustrated
by the following
example:

This xmas season, a guy made a video of his christmas tree lights that spread
all around
the internet and became one of the most memorable and cantagious videos ever.

Within about two weeks, the guy sold the video to a major beer advertiser.

If his video was on your system, the beer company could have called you to do
the deal,
undermining him entirely.

The beer company could have also put you and the guy in a bidding war, happily
watching
the price fall to see who would make any money at all.

Therefore, this model of your service, I believe, is hurtful for anyone who
creates content
that they feel is or ever could be worth anything more than $0.

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Some of the links to quicktime reinstaller are for the 7.0.2-7.0.1
version, heres a link to the Mac downgrader 7.0.4-7.0.1 version:

http://tinyurl.com/anxg2

I havent had any problems myself so I havent downgraded. 7.0.4
includes some fixes for security vunerabilities so I guess its best to
stick with it if it works ok for you.

Apple have really made a mess of getting people to feel comfortable
and happy wioth Quicktime 7, every new version seems to create new
problems at the same time as fixing old ones.

Am also hearing some rumblings about the new iTunes, that the music
store bit now built into the library page is sending information back
to Apple about what you are listening to, so it can make
recommendations about what you should buy. This is causing those that
care about privacy issues to shout 'foul!'.

My 8 months as a Mac user really dont feel much different to the
previous years as a user of Microsofts stuff. Both are clearing
capable of making some very poor decisions, and of not always testing
products properly before releasing them.

Needless to say, I'm pretty jazzed about reaching the three-digit

[videoblogging] Re: http://youare.tv/

2006-01-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Well it can be difficult to find the right balance with such terms
conditions. Yours isnt he only service thats been talked about here
for having 'perpetual' and other things in the tc.

I mean you have to make the users grant you some rights or you wouldnt
have the right to distribute their videos. But theres a number of
things you could change that would probably help:

Lose the 'perpetual' bit. Some services let users remove content from
the site at any time in the future, and thus your right to distribute
the content doesnt need to be perpetual, just as long as the user
keeps it on the site.

Consider changing the stuff about your right to use peoples videos to
advertise your service. You'll get more goodwill from users if you
pick the content you may want to use in future to advertise
yourselves, and then ask the creators of those videos for permission.

Maybe consider making your system compatible with the creative-commons
way of doing things.

You'll still get users without making any of these changes, but some
people will be putoff.

Cheers

David -

Your project looks promising. Any service that can raise the
signal-to-noise ratio is welcome in that it is harder and harder to see
everything that is out there. I agree with you that the medium has
changed and the indepenent voice can carry much farther than in the
past, howecer we need to be careful not to repeat mistakes that exist
on other platforms.

After hearing feedback from some of us, I commend you for taking your
ToS under review, and will continue to watch your site develop.

My Best,

Ted,

Right now we don't make any revenue from you videos. This clause helps

counsel edit them to clarify that the model will change once we allow
users to share in advertising, and allow them to sell content through
youare.tv.

But please be advised that we are not looking to rip our content

Thanks for the dialog... and if you have any content we'd love to see

[videoblogging] a NEW regional vlogging resource - VB in NY

2006-01-13 Thread Its A Mystery and So Im I

Hey, I have in this group since last year. I have learned alot from
the vlogging gurus in here. It wanted to give back to the community
so I started a local resource for newbies in the New York area.
It's not a email discussion like this one, just a source for posting
reources related to videoblogging or podcasting. It's broken doen
into categories

VBNY is more like a tricycle before newbies graduate to 10 Speed dirt
bike. I love this group but sometimes one get lost in all the tech
speak and other stuff that might be intimidating to the uninitiated.

Also, I want this vbny be a filter to some interesting tidbits that
discusses in this group. A kinda human aggregated Yahoogroup content
sifter. You be amazed at the stuff that goes by unnoticed in this
group. Not everybody has tome to read throught thousands of email
and put things in its proper context. We'll try my best to add to
the value of this list with vbny.

If you have newbie friends, colleagues or anyone who just created
their first vlog, I can include them as featured vlogs on my homepage.
They won't have to worry about getting lost in the crowd of other
vlog directories since we will only focus on regional content.

It's not pretty but over the weeks, I'll work on adding more
pazaazz. I Will also include a Flash tutorial as well to explain
the evolution (blogging-podcasting-vlogging) of this emerging
new medium and how can utilized in their day-to-day lives.

We have seen examples of this
 with Amazon and Ebay.

this is great news.
permalinks to pages and individual videos is necessary for most people
on this group.

i looked at your user profile:
http://www.youare.tv/members/area.php?member=1
and see that you have a personal website:
http://kefentse.com/

the idea is that you can store your video on youare.tv...
but can link to the actual video file on your personal website.
blip.tv is a champion of this.

youtube and other hosting companies appeal to the people who dont care
where their video is. Just get it up. put watermarks on it.
advertising. who cares.
but the real influences in the community probably wont digg this.

where are you guys located?
what your story?
you certainly seem to just spring up.

$99 if I recall... if that's free now then I will definitely be
contacting them for my money back as I bought a license several months

Okay all... this is great feedback, but seriously let's cut the guy a break.
He's listening and interacting here. That's the first step.
Legaleze like Terms Of Service agreements are hard to write. Nobody
knows what to do here, and paying lawyers to do this gets expensive...
and the lawyers can often come up with some draconian stuff anyway.
Usually people just copy TOS from other sites just to get it up and
get going. They often don't think about it and the users don't often
read it.

Good sleuthing and great feedback. Now let's give this site/service a
chance to respond and improve.

Its certainly less expensive to license this encoding technology on
the server side (one license) than to do so for a client side
application (license to distribute multiple copies).

For the most part, Flash is being used to protect video...and most

Flash also cannot take advantage of syncing to devices until a Flash

Macromedia(which owns Flash) does prohibit encoding and playing in

A. No, the File Format Specification is provided for the specific
purpose of enabling software applications to export to the Macromedia
Flash File Format (SWF).

that's true. Adobe does own Macromedia.
Not sure what changes you're expecting though.
