Issue: Video pausing. During peak hours users may occasionally notice
that new or popular videos are slow to download, causing a pausing
 effect.
Cause: YouTube is currently serving over 45 terabytes of video per day.
This is equal to 75,000 dial-up modems running at full speed for an
 entire day.
Resolution: To keep up with this demand and future growth, we're
constantly working on ways to improve our internet connectivity. We
expect some of our most recent additions to come online over the next
 few days and weeks.

45 terabytes per day is a big frikin' number, even if they dramatised
with the dial-up example. i'd guess most such hosting services are
experiencing similar issues. cut blip a break, they're free and, i
think it's safe to say this but correct me if incorrect, prolly less

As the sicky wife currently suffering, thanks to all those for their well wishes.  I have read most of the feed re the Respect conversation, and I would add this two pennies worth:  the secret to the British sense of humour is a good sense of the surreal.  The old English comedies are almost a sort of ideal of Englishness, and I have never met anyone who lives up to it, it is just a social pressure in our consciousness.  To get the modern British sense of humour, see Monty Python, Eddie Izzard, Billy Conolly, Ben Elton, Bill Bailey, and many others.  Also for non english surreal humour, see Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.  We get bored with real life, so we look at it sideways.  For an example, see http://alternativekitten.blogspot.com, Philosophy 101 Episode One.  This is not spam, this is an example (but if you want to boost my ego, view it on blip.tv, it gives me stats, :)).  Yes the MS is a pain in the butt, but surreal is the ONLY way to go with these things.  In a world of quantum physics, genetics and evolution, reality does not make sense, so go sideways.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 9 Feb 2006, at 22:36, Paul Knight wrote: Well I left but came back.  I was getting a bit narked with the constant "We love Rocketboom" crowd with their over slushiness and over the top, lengthy threads on how wonderful RB is and how much money they are making, it was getting to be like the "Hello Celebrity news yahoo group. According to all our diagnostic systems and reports, we were up last
night, and haven't had downtime in some time. It looks like there
were Internet networking issues that may have caused blip to be
unavailable for some people for some period of time.

The best example of this is blip working for Markus, but being
unavailable for you, Josh.

Either way, we're looking into this to make sure it wasn't any kind of
issue on our side. I'm pretty confident that it wasn't.

[videoblogging] Re: blip down??!!

2006-02-10 Thread mikehudack
Hey David,

We can suppport quite a few concurrent viewers for a 20mb viewer :)

Our infrastructure includes two collocation facilities in New York
City (we'll soon be adding a third in California) with excellent,
burstable bandwidth. In terms of servers, we have about a dozen of
them, including a nice big two terabyte RAID array we use to store videos.

We're always working to improve our infrastructure, and have recently
added some new software to help us distribute load among our different
sites. We're also working now to beef up our bandwidth purchases even
further to cope with our growth -- which is great.

For what its worth, this is what I ended up doing to embed the video.

I opened the live stream in the standalone player, than did a Save As

drupal. Works like a charm, and simple.

[videoblogging] Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Stephanie Bryant
I'm curious:

How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts?

Some detail:
An introvert is someone who is re-energized by being alone, but when
they spend a lot of time around people, they feel drained and maybe
anxious afterwards.

An extrovert is the opposite: energized in the presence of others, but
drained after a weekend in isolation.

Most people are somewhere in the middle. Note that this has nothing to
do with shyness or stage fright/stage presence.

I would like the lurkers to respond, too, if you all don't mind (since
otherwise the results will naturally be skewed towards the extroverts,
introverts being more likely to lurk on forums). Where do you put
yourself in the introvert/extrovert spectrum? [If you've taken the
Meiers-Brigg personality test, you pretty much know already]. And if
you're willing to mention it, where is your videoblog?

I'm interested to know if there's a higher percentage of one

Also, if you're the kind of person who adamantly hates labels like

I think I'm an extroverted introvert. I mean, as much as I'm okay when
it comes to mingling with people, and can seem not to stop at all when
speaking, I pretty much enjoyed moments of solitude and isolation to
do my own stuff.

And I prefer being behind the camera. But despite thus, I am forced to
be in front of the camera all the time, and the roles I have in my own
short films usually end with me... dying.

2006-02-10 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Edmund,

How do you feel after being in a large group of people? How do you
feel after being alone? Both introverts and extroverts can enjoy
either activity (and everyone needs some alone time as well as time
with people)-- it's a matter of which one makes you feel more
energized and recharged emotionally, mentally, spiritually.

My guess, based on what you said, is that you're close to the middle,
more towards the introvert side, but that you're not shy, which makes
a difference in how you perceive your own introvert/extrovert self.

Well with data rate set to automatic like it is in that tutorial I can't see how you'll end up with low bit rates. Automatic data rate means the codec will use however much data it needs to maintain a certain quality. So at any given time (like a fast motion sequence) it can shoot way up.

I did that test about 4 years ago and was labeled as type INTJ. i dont think i have changed much so i guess on a psycho-analysis level, thats what I am.of course, thats a generality... and i of course get excited when around certain groups of people...and get energized... but most groups of people do drain me.
i also can drain myself as my mind is usually quite active until the moment i fall asleep.my vlogs are currently only in my head, except some posts on evilvlog. but i am excited about one vloggy project that i am about to get off the ground...

[videoblogging] CHERUB - episode 1 is live!

2006-02-10 Thread Caution Zero
Greetings,

I have no intention of spamming this list every single
week, but I did think it was worth mentioning us one
more time... I know this list is smart enough to sub
to a feed if you want future updates; I mainly posted
this to let you know that we're on schedule and should
be posting every week for the next several months.

Episode One of the new web parody CHERUB, the vampire
with bunny slippers, is now live:

http://www.cautionzero.net/cherub/

In this episode, a simple assignment to rescue a lost
kitty turns into a nightmarish confrontation with
Cherub's arch-nemesis, Johnny Mildly-Irritating. Also,
the gang runs out of gin and panic ensues.

CHERUB is a slapstick parody of Joss Whedon's ANGEL,
released as an internet video series by Seattle-based
Caution Zero Network. Season One features twelve 4-7
minute episodes about the adventures of Cherub, the
vampire with bunny slippers, and his gang at Cherub
Investigations - the aspiring actress Charity Case,
the arcane expert Jasper Windham-Hill, the muscle man
Roger Pipebomb, and the inter-dimensional traveler
Barney. New episodes will be released every Friday.

Like the show? Do us a favor and Digg it!

Thanks much!

Introvert, although I can deal with people in a work situation, but social situations leave me fatigued and scared.  Too many people, human beings scare me, lol.  Give me cats any day.  Yes, I have noticed the tendency towards insanity in vloggers.    I'm glad you are doing this research, it is the kind of thing I would like to do, I would like to know the results when you get them, along with statistical significance etc.  If it works, I might try a bit of at home research I have always wanted to do and see if I can find anything significant in that.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 10 Feb 2006, at 16:09, Stephanie Bryant wrote: I'm curious: How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts? But thank you for the words of support.

FYI - I would WANT to know if any member of this list has anything
video production related FOR SALE including cameras, computers,
lights, tripods etc. For the owners of this list to think this type
of post is not appropriate, I find both offensive and blindsighted.

Please email me directly if you have anything for sale like that if
we can't do it on list. Could we take a vote how many would NOT WANT
for sale items from fellow list member posted here? I bet almost all
members would welcome such posts.

First of all, thank you for posting this.

which everyone in this forum knows is what I swear by for my movie

This is some pretty wild news. It's kind of comical that I haven't

And you know? The Roxio guys in the forums there have been avoiding
my questions like the plague. This all makes sense now.

Just for reference--

I was asking why Roxio 7 had mp4 support, and suddenly it was yanked

Re: [videoblogging] Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Ron Watson

Bernie O, at HPU explained introvert and extroverts like this:Introverts are very comfortable working inside their own bubble. It takes very little energy to work in your own bubble, but as people start to come into your bubble, it gets harder and more energy must be spent to do work as people get involved in your bubble. An extrovert is very comfortable working outside of their bubbles, we are comfortable working in other people's bubbles. If we are able to work outside of our solo bubble, work is easy, very little energy being expended, but when we have to work alone, all inside our bubble, it is harder and requires more energy. It is very important to note that these tendencies are not exclusive. An introvert can function as an extrovert, and vice versa, but it is harder to do and requires more energy. That's what I remember about introvert and extrovert. I also vividly remember the Intuitive v Sensing breakdown. Intuitive people are big picture people; generalists. They like to be given the big picture and work from there. When given a task, the Intuitive person would rather have a defined goal and then be left alone, and the Sensing person wants to have a step by step progression. Sensing people are detail oriented. The Intuitive Person is the guy who walks into a room, puts his keys down and immediately loses them; attention to detail is the Sensing person's realm. The details tend to get in the way of the Intuitive person.Again this is about expending energy vs comfort. Intuitives expend very little energy in attacking the big picture, but can be overdrained and overwhelmed by the steps and process that makes the Sensing person comfortable.  I am a highly intuitive person. It is both a blessing and a curse. I did real well in math until calculus, because I could not follow the progressions. Even in Algebra, Geometry and Trig, I was using the big picture to solve my problems: working backwards from multiple choice tests, and had huge problems when I actually had to follow  steps to the letter. Calc was a waste of time. Chemistry; I can still remember lots of stuff, theories, equations, properties of elements, I can still set up most of the heavy equations, but I have the hardest time computing them...I wish that more people would look to tests such as the Meyer's-Briggs. I have found it immensely helpful in my roles of coach and instructor. It really helps to have things explained in the manner in which you are comfortable. Intuitive vs Sensing, I believe are the 2 most important in terms of education and educating. Nothing is worse than feeling as if you are drowning in a sea of information, or that you are being tied down by all the details. Of course the other groupings are important, but I have gotten the most use out of the I vs S category. The two people I have run seminars with have the same basic knowledge that I have, but they are highly Sensing and I am highly Intuitive. This works great because we can give people the same information in a manner that will be well received and easy to process. RonOn Feb 10, 2006, at 12:18 PM, Ted Tagami wrote: Where do PERverts fit on the scale? ;) Seriously, depends on the day/place/people for me. I can really dig into some social scenes, while others wear me out. Same with working alone. Maybe I just suffer from ADD...On 2/10/06, Paul Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am the definitive Gemini, I like the peace and tranquility of being by myself with no distractions then I also love being the centre of attention.  I'm just nuts.On 10 Feb 2006, at 16:09, Stephanie Bryant wrote: I'm curious: How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts? [videoblogging] Spam and such...

2006-02-10 Thread Ron Watson

I recently sent off a Shameless Self Promotion note to this list. I have realized since that it is considered spamming to ask people to check out a piece of work. If that was not spam, disregard this entire note. If you think it was read on and let's discuss this. I wanted people from this list to see the piece, as I was proud of it. It was a project instead of a simple vlog entry. I guess I am not allowed to do that because it is spamming. I might be out of line her; misunderstanding something, or maybe I didn't read the rules, but isn't that a problem? Aren't we on here to talk about vlogging? To share our stuff with eachother, not just the technical mumbo-jumbo, or philosophical concepts, but the stuff that we do. There are 5345 vlogs listed in mefeedia these days. How do we get people to see things that we feel are good pieces if we are not community celebrities? This list alone occupies a good deal of time for all of us daily. Most of it is stuff that I am not really interested in. Is that spam? How can I keep in touch with this list and get to see new faces and ideas in the vlogging world. Somebody has to tell me, as I am very busy with my own stuff, as I am sure all of you are as well. My point is that if we cannot send an email to this list asking for others that are doing the same things as we are, only totally different, to check it out and comment on it, what good is this list?I have posted about 30 videos, I think I have asked the list to check out this one, that's it. Why? Because I thought it was pretty good. It was edited from 5 hours of video, the project is 40 gb. There are several really nice shots, from a cinematographic standpoint. I really wanted to get some feedback from it. As I said before, I might be out of line here, totally missing the point about spamming. If that note that I sent asking people to check out a piece of mine that I worked hard on, and thought was good, was spam, then I think that is a problem with this list. On Feb 10, 2006, at 12:59 PM, Rachel Knight wrote: Introvert, although I can deal with people in a work situation, but social situations leave me fatigued and scared. Ron, I don't know if the group policy changed recently, but posting when you've done a particularly important vlog entry has not traditionally been a problem. Posting for EVERY vlog entry usually indicates that one's view of important is inflated, but you don't do that.

LOL too funny - particularly since I'm partially supporting myself
through speeches at the moment. :)

And it sounds like we're discovering a pattern here with this
extrovert-introvert-extrovert thing depending on the audience.

one question - I wonder how many vloggers would consider themselves
introverted in front of a camera? Again, it's a mixed bag for me - I'm
not big on having stills taken of me, but I have no problem with
yakking it up on video. Maybe it's a weight thing.

[videoblogging] richard in universitie's research blog

2006-02-10 Thread Richard Show

At the end of last semester the publicity department at my university (Universtiy of Missouri - Rolla) contacted me because they keep up with Rocketboom, believe it or not, and saw my video blog. They wanted to do a press release on this. Though I am not opposed to attention at all, I thought about it, and eventually said no. The problem is that I actually do a lot of research, get funding, and teach, as much as I would like to spend all my time video blogging. The Missouri legislature and new administration is very conservative these days and they are cutting higher ed right and left (who needs colleges), and I could just see one of these legislators seeing one of the professors running around in silly videos with his near fifty year beer gut hanging out. He could say, well this is what our tax money is going to, and, well ... I could see not being very popular. Honestly, I rarely even mention the richard show around school, though I have a link on my UMR web site. I don't think many of my students even know I do that. Although I will admit they probably wouldn't be too surprised - I don't exactly have a reputation of being overly serious or mature.
UMR calls itself Missouri's Technological Research University and our publicty department really is trying to do some different things with techology, and is much more in-tune with the modern world than the Missouri legislature (they knew about Rocketboom). So they tried a different angle and started a blog about UMR's research and they said they could write about me on there and they promised to make an effort to note that I did actually do real professor stuff. So, they wrote something and I said ok. I have no idea if anyone, even at UMR will read the UMR research blog, but, the story is here
http://blog.umr.edu/visions/2006/02/the_richard_show_goes_boom.html... and I thought it was kind of cool and I was happy with the job they did. As I said, I am not opposed to attention. After all, we are all narcists and it is my show.

My point is that if we cannot send an email to this list asking for others that are doing the same things as we are, only totally different, to check it out and comment on it, what good is this list?
I have posted about 30 videos, I think I have asked the list to check out this one, that's it. Why? Because I thought it was pretty good. It was edited from 5 hours of video, the project is 40 gb. There are several really nice shots, from a cinematographic standpoint. I really wanted to get some feedback from it.
As I said before, I might be out of line here, totally missing the point about spamming. If that note that I sent asking people to check out a piece of mine that I worked hard on, and thought was good, was spam, then I think that is a problem with this list.

then I never made it easy to find... it was out there, but not

[videoblogging] Re: ATT stakes claim on essential parts of MPEG-4

2006-02-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Oh dear, what is the point in MPEG-LA, who call themselves world
leader in one-stop technology platform patent licensing if it turns
out that a holder of an essential patent isnt a member?

The devil is in the detail which I dont have. If ATTs patent does not
cover essential technology used in all forms of mpeg4, then only
certain implementations of mpeg4 by companies in hardware or software
will be affected. If the technology is not essential, companies could
remove it rather than pay up, if the loss of functionality isnt crippling.

If it is essential technology that mpeg4 will not function without,
then companies will either have to contest ATT's claims, pay up, or
stop using mpeg4.

Theoretically, and depending what the technology is, this could also
affect licensing arrangements for people who distribute videos in
mpeg4 format. At the moment most videobloggers dont think about this
issue, and luckily MPEG-LA license scheme for mpeg4 means people dont
have to (because content under a certain length/number of viewers/pay
or not doesnt need an additional license). But if ATT's patent covers
technology thats in the actual resulting mpeg4 files themselves, not
just the software hardware to play make mpeg4, then this could
have ramifications. The stuff I am waffling about in this paragraph is
the same sort of issue that makes DivX need to have a licensing
agreement for people who distribute divx files on the net. The ATT
complication pushes back my hopes regarding timescale when DivX may
improve their license to be more videoblog firends, but this is just
speculation.

I am not a lawyer, the above conclusions are as near as I can
personally get without being one or having more information.
