Re: [videoblogging] postcards

One thing you could do would be to attach the postcard to a board and
then point the webcam at the board and take a picture.

That way there won't be any shaking.

While you're at it, put some light on the postcard.

BTW, here's a way to shut off caps lock.

On your mac, if you go to System Preferences under the APPLE menu,
and then click on Keyboard and Mouse, click on Keyboard at the top,
then click on the Modifier Keys button.

Make the Caps Lock menu select 'No Action'

That way caps lock won't go on when you press that key...

My cc license says:

There isn't any way for me to spcify how I want attribution within

On my blog just under the CC link I have:

If you use this video, please list the video credit as Steve

Re: [videoblogging] Embedded player question

2007-01-02 Thread Steve Garfield
All your plays are recorded over on blip so that no matter where your
video is sitting, the playing of it gets counted.

Brightcove also has embedded players that track plays...

If you want your website to get hits, you need to have the viewer
visit the site...

I think that the days of counting website hits is going away, and the
future lies in counting the number of times the media is watched no
matter where it sits.

Also, I'm hoping that we get beyond CMP or cost per 1,000
impressions, and are able to move toward the value of sponsorship for
a targeted audience.

That's where the real advertiser value is in web video vs. blasting
out an ad to thousands of people who don't care to see it.

Re: [videoblogging] Fun legal developments

2006-12-26 Thread Steve Garfield
In Mike's blog post you can go read the article about this. It says
in part:

U.S. District Judge Sam Lindsay in the northern district of Texas
granted a preliminary injunction against Robert Davis, who operated
Supercrosslive.com and had been providing direct links to the live
audiocasts of motorcycle racing events.

The audio Webcasts are copyrighted by SFX Motor Sports, a Texas
company that is one of the largest producers of Supercross
motorcycle racing events. SFX sued Davis in February, noting that
fans who go to its own Web site will see the names and logos of
sponsors including wireless company Amp'd Mobile. (Anyone who clicked
on the link from Davis' site, however, would not see the logos of
companies that paid to be sponsors.)

It 's about direct linking to live streaming audio files, not a
hosted web video.

Information Week has this:

SFX Motor Sports is dumb because they apparently failed (as TechDirt
correctly notes) to put in place any of the easy-to-implement
technologies that can be used to block links from specific external
sites. Davis is dumb for representing himself -- he apparently thinks
that calling the opposition names like Genghis Kahn is the height of
legal argument.

And the judge's ruling is dumb because it extends copyright to an
instance where there were no actual copies made.

And yet: What Davis did is wrong. He's a parasite, getting revenue
from the hard work of other people and giving nothing back.

A better way to handle this would have been for SFX Motor Sports to
have put in place technology to block Davis's connections and then,
if necessary, sue Davis for circumventing them.

That's an interesting comment.

It made me go back and look at how I posted about this.

I wrote:

Not much commentary.

I remember having a problem writing a description for this video. Part
of the reason was that the video itself was so well done in telling the
story and explaining what happened that I wanted to let the viewer hear
the story directly from you.

It's very powerful.

Another reason the text on my post is sparse is that you don't describe
the contents of your video in your blog post. A lot of time I like to
copy and paste some text from to post I'm reblogging to help describe
it.

On your post you say:
--
This video is dedicated to Independent Journalists worldwide who've
paid a price for seeking the truth ... some more than others. ~presente

HOW TO TAKE ACTION

It's not like this is the 1st time ...
CBS 2 Investigates: Videotape Cops At Own Peril

In the last three years, there has been an increase of 25% in civilian
complaints against the NYPD. In the last two years, there has been an
increase of 12% in lawsuits filed against the NYPD for false arrest,
assault, excessive force or other wrongdoing.*
--

So to sum up, your video told the whole story and I basically wanted to
link to it so people could watch it themselves.

Thanks

 Helping Vlogs to Flog

 The Investor: Steve Krausz, general partner, U.S. Venture Partners

 What he's backed: PodTech Network, Verity, Vontu

 What he wants now: A matchmaking site that brings new forms of
 advertising to one of the Web's fastest-growing new phenomena, the
 video blog. Popular vlog Rocketboom got the concept off the ground
 earlier this year by auctioning off 15-second house-produced ads at
 the end of its Web newscasts; then-host Amanda Congdon also wore
 T-shirts from startups eager for exposure.

 Krausz wants a startup that can offer a clearinghouse of placement
 opportunities from major advertisers like Apple (Charts) and Nike
 (Charts) - from 10-second trailers to insertion of products in the
 creative. Videos would be subject to screening and approval by the
 advertiser, but Krausz thinks that's a service that could eventually
 be outsourced. Payment to vloggers could be negotiated any number of
 ways: They could receive fees based on impressions, click-throughs, or
 both. The startup, of course, would take a healthy cut. It would
 allow this explosion of user-generated content to get an additional
 revenue stream, Krausz says. Nothing like this exists yet.

 What he'll invest: $2 million for a proof-of-concept site and sign-on
 from a handful of top advertisers

[videoblogging] Annimations or graphics needed for video

2006-12-12 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi,

I'm working on a pilot radio/vlog series and might need some
animation or graphics done.

Anyone interested?

It would be a few seconds of each of these:

- Chinese Medicine theory - Collect and organize
- Body in balance Ying/Yang
- 5 person in same condition, holding hands, in a circle, weaker
person being pulled

If you are interested, please email me...

I'd need some examples today...

Thanks,

P2 Is A Better Workflow
With my brief experience with this sort of workflow and P2 media, I
am sold. I really enjoy working in this way with the instant non-
linear access and not having to capture tape. I think that this sort
of workflow, whether it's with P2 or some sort of newer, as of yet
unthought-of media, it is the best way to streamline the production
process. I am currently planning on going into production on my own
pilot using basically a similar workflow. I know that the end results
will look and sound amazing.

Re: [videoblogging] Best Wordpress theme?

2006-12-04 Thread Steve Garfield
I just took a very quick look.

It would be cool if there was a blip.tv -- Wordpress type of
communication that relieved the user of having to go through entering
all of this information ( from Verdi's page):

Use:

1. All the video is handled with the custom fields section in
Wordpress. The post window is just used for the text of the post.

2. You’ll need an enclosure field for each media type. The value
field gets filled in with this info:
Line 1 is the URL to the file.
Line 2 is the size in bytes of the file.
Line 3 is the mime type of the file. (mov, mp4, m4v - video/
quicktime / wmv - video/x-ms-wmv / flv - video/x-flv)
Line 4 is the “platform” of the file (QuickTime, iTunes, Windows
Media, Flash)
Line 5 tells you if it should be displayed or not. [show/noshow]
Line 6 is the width (Typically 320)
Line 7 is the height (Typically 240 + 16(for the player)= 256
(QuickTime  Flash); 240 + 46 = 286 (Windows Media)).

3. The image that you click on to play the video is set with a
“videoLinkImage” field. Fill in the value with the URL to the image.

4. The thumbnail image for the lower navigation and the archive page
is handled with a “thumbnail” filed. Fill in the value with the URL
of a 120 X 90 pixel image.

you can get service from T-Mobil or Cingular but I haven't gotten it

It's too bad too since I currently have Verizon and their coverage is

Hey Stan,
Just saw this:

Wednesday, November 29, 2006
Geo-VideoBlogging with the Nokia N95
http://movogo.blogspot.com/2006/11/geo-videoblogging-with-nokia-n95.html

There is a new cellphone on the horizon that is billed as a
multimedia computer. Nokia intends to release this camera in the
second quarter of 2007. It finally integrates good optics (Carl
Zeiss) with an integrated GPS and up to 2GB storage. Using the Nokia
SDK, it may be possible to do photo geo-tagging and even video geo-
tagging on the device itself. If not, certainly it will be possible
to send a web service location information and media to do the geo-
tagging on a remote server.

See this review for more details.

Here is a sample low-resolution photo from the N93 -- a 3.2 megapixel
camera. The N95 is billed as a 5 megapixel camera. Both use Carl
Zeiss optics (unlike the very poor sensors on current cellphone
cameras in the US).

US carriers won't carry this. If you use T-Mobile or Cingular, you'll
be able to plug-in a US SIM card into these devices to use them.

Is the camera any good? Currently, videobloggers are using the N93
cellphones on wifi networks. That is, they wait until they are in a
hotspot and then use a wifi network to send photos and videos.

 Salivating, inventing reasons to spring for the N95. OK. Here's two.

 It looks as if it is a truly world band cell phone, working both in
 the US as well as Europe. I was thinking of getting an Xacti just to
 have with me all the time. Phone and camera combo...

 Still, not quite enough though.

 But here is a killer! If it works Does the GPS system transfer
 data over to the video system? Would it be possible to pull out a
 data field in the video to see where as well as when the material was
 shot? That would be a big help for me as I travel and shoot alone,
 having enough to do without taking notes about where I was for a
 particular sequence. I can come up with some great excuses to spring
 for that capability alone!

And you end up on my point, but it's a about Tony, baby.

Videoblogging is people.

I subscribe to people.

Many video networks have categories for all types of shows, but leave
out the 'people' category.

Look at http://network2.tv/

 * All Shows
 * Arts
 * Business
 * Cartoons
 * Comedy
 * Culture
 * Education
 * Entertainment
 * Family
 * Film
 * Food
 * Games
 * Health
 * Instructional
 * International
 * Local
 * Music
 * News
 * Politics
 * Society
 * Sports
 * Technology
 * Travel

I asked them to add a people category and they have it in the queue.

My vlog has videos that fit in a few of these categories, but how
would you categorize it with choices liek these? You can't.

It really belongs in a 'people' category. That's why I made
suggestions for the vloggies to recognize people and specific videos
instead of shows. That would have been more inclusive of the YouTube
vloggers.

[videoblogging] Boston Media Makers: Oct 1st 10:00 AM in Boston

2006-09-28 Thread Steve Garfield
Hello friends,
This email is a reminder of our next meeting of the Boston Media
Makers, Sunday October 1st 10:00 AM at Sweet Finnish in Jamaica Plain.

Sweet Finnish
761 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA

http://bostonmediamakers.wordpress.com/

Boston Media Makers is a group of local video producers, video
bloggers, podcasters, artists, and creative people who want to get
together and share what they are doing over coffee on a Sunday morning.

On October 1st, John Herman is going to tell us about his new
realtime live movie making improv project, and then we are going to
make a movie!

John describes it for us:

Boston Neutrino producer John Herman will be talking about Neutrino
to Boston Media Makers on October 1st. He will also lead the gathered
in an improvised drama on video. Come join the fun! The Neutrino
Video Project was started in NYC by a daring troupe of
improvisational theater performers. With three cameras and a large
technical crew, Neutrino takes to the streets to shoot, edit, score,
and mix a completely improvised movie in the time it takes for you to
watch it. Spontaneous, beautiful, and hilarious, this “theatrical
movie experience” is the first of its kind. The show has been
heralded in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Detroit, San Francisco,
Toronto, and Washington, D.C. where it is performed under the
Neutrino name by different groups. Now it will be in Boston. Join the
revolution!

John participated in the Ze Frank Video Workshop I ran at PodCamp
Boston. We had such a great time. I’m glad John will be with us to
make some media together.

There’ll be plenty of time for each of us to share what we are
working on too!

Agenda
10:00 - 10:30 Mingling
10:30 - 11:00 Hear what everyone is working on
11:00 - 12:00 John Herman presentation and movie making

Join us.

Got a camera?  Bring one!

PLAN ON ATTENDING? Please reply to let me know

Jamaica Plain Open Studios
As an added bonus, the Jamaica Plain Open Studios is going on the
same day so after the meeting you can visit the 100's of artists who
open their art studios...

 A lot of the swimming parts are just too high quality/well-framed to

 Regardless of what political side you're on, we should all agree that
 journalists are not agents of the government. If people feel that a
 journalist's raw tapes and notes can be used against them...who would
 then trust a journalist? Government then squashes the media's ability
 to cover stories.

[videoblogging] My Mom is on YouTube!

2006-08-24 Thread Steve Garfield
Hello friends,
My Mom is now on YouTube!

Ronni Bennett just wrote a nice piece on her blog about how you can
blog at any age and blogging can bring people together:

Even though increasing numbers of elders are blogging, the press and
the culture at large still believe it is a youth activity. That
creates a divide between generations that too often comes up in the
media as: “Oh, dear, blogging is dangerous and when it’s not, it’s
just those young folks being young. But aren’t those old folks cute
trying to keep up with the kids.”

Those of us who are out here doing it every day know better, and in
the past few days, an event has occurred that brings two widely
separated ages together appreciating each other. Follow along now and
I promise you’ll have a great laugh even if you have seen all or part
of this before

So I made my mom a YouTube account and posted the video she was
referring to so that Ronni can embed it on her blog post:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6MotflNck

Enjoy!

So you could imply that the only place they are actually going to

With YouTube you can have both, centralized videos and you can post
videos on your blog.

Plus, anyone can post a YouTube video on their blog too.

They just don't allow downloads or feeds.

Millions of people don't seem to care.

 well said.
 this is alos why i dont like YouTube.
 its also why so many people seem to like it.

 how dull would it be if all videos were all in one place..and you had
 to log in to be a part of it. However, if youre a money-making
 enterprise, this is wonderful.

Re: [videoblogging] Copying YouTube Videos

2006-05-26 Thread Steve Garfield

I just posted a comment on that post.

That's one of the problems with the YouTube site, their terms and
conditions. Looking at it from a Creative Commons/Remix Culture point
of view, it stinks!

Other sites allow you to post videos with whatever license you want.
These other sites PROMOTE remixing and RESUSE. Not YouTube. Not even
if you post a CC licensed work, they then want to restrict a viewers
use? It doesn't seem right.

I've emailed them twice about these issues and haven't ever heard back.

I guess their Terms of Service state pretty clearly what their
intentions are, combined with how hard htey make it for people to grab
theg videos off the site.

This is an excellent article about videoblogging. Ellen Lee, of the San
Francisco Chronicle, presents an accruate view of how some
videobloggers use vlogging to capture fleeting moments of life.

It's unfortunate that the headline writer totally missed the point of
the article by writing, Online diaries looking a lot like television.

The whole point of the article is that most of the video blogs
highlighted in the story are not like televison at all.

[videoblogging] Re-Wired: Shooting

2006-04-20 Thread Steve Garfield

Jim Feeley suggests ways to make your own viral hit in his Wired
article, Wired 14.05: Lights! Camera! Vodcast!.

In his section on shooting, he suggests a lot of things that I think a
beginner shouldn't have to worry about or might get put off by
thinking, Oh that's too much work or If it has to be perfect I'm not
doing it.

So I blogged a response to this small section on shooting, and
presented a much simpler and less intensive way to get started with
vlogging.

Re: [videoblogging] Who owns culture?

2006-04-07 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi David,
That was very cool. He gave a similar speech at Northeastern University recently. I'd like to use some of those shots since in my video I mainly concentrated on him giving the speech and less on his video.

I'd like to save and remix this video, it's got a CC license so that's ok, but it's saved up on YouAreTV in QuickTime's KIOSKMODE :

KIOSKMODE=value (optional...requires QuickTime 4)

KIOSKMODE is either TRUE or FALSE. By default, KIOSKMODE is FALSE. When KIOSKMODE is set to TRUE, the plug-in does not include its pop-up menu in the movie controller and does not allow drag and drop to save the movie.

Does the owner choose that setting?

It seems that the setting does not allow the QuickTime controller to display the SAVE control.

You can view the source to determine the file location, but it'd be easier of it just let me save the video from the QuickTime controller.
Thanks,
--Steve

[videoblogging] Videoblogging Week 2006: Vloggers Participating in Videoblogging Week 2006

watching everyone's videos.

Vloggers Participating in Videoblogging Week 2006
http://videobloggingweek2006.blogspot.com/2006/04/vloggers-

It gives visitors a way to see everyone who is participating using the
work of Aidan, Stephanie and Andy.

Please use the comments section over there to post any other ways that
you use to keep track of the new videos.

This project has made it clear to me that there needs to be better ways
for groups like this to keep track of new videos.

The videobloggingweek2006 tag is a filter, a trusted filter that we all
want to use to be able to see new videos, but the distribution
mechanism isn't quite yet up to par.

Hopefully we can figure something out...

Re: [videoblogging] Other People's Videos

2006-03-26 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Melanie,
Back in the days of Web 1.0, you'd never deep link to a graphic on
someone's site. That was called stealing bandwidth.

Then when videos started coming out, people were upset when you deep
linked to their videos because you'd be stealing a LOT of bandwidth.

Now with free hosting and unmetered bandwidth, people aren't as upset
by direct linking to videos. If they are hosting their videos on
blip.tv, audioblog, ourmedia, YouTube, bandwidth isn't the question.

Keep in mind that some creators don't want you to host their video on
your site because they are counting on traffic to their site to get
viewer counts and ad views, while others pay for bandwidth and more
views cost them money.

Two years ago I was against direct linking to videos, now I've come to
the realization that media is free, not like free beer, but free to zip
all over the internet. Personally, I'd prefer a link to the permalink
of my post so that the viewer can read my supporting text and links.

It's a licensing question too. What is the intent of the creator? Do
they have a Creative Commons license on their video? If they do, and
it has a non-commercial, attribution, share-alike license, then you can
repost it on your site as long as you don't sell it, give them credit,
usually with a link back to a permalink if the video, and a similar
Creative Commons license.

Also, a Creative Commons license is there so that others can reuse and
remix the content without having to ask. Makes it a lot easier to put
together videos that use others content.

When I use clips of others videos for Vlog Soup, I let the creator know
as a courtesy.

I'd be interested in what Geek Entertainment TV thinks of the method
you used to post one of their interviews.

http://www.newmediacollective.org/2006/03/
sxsw2006_blogging_while_black.html

Looks like you have a direct link to their movie with a link back to
their site for credit.

On Mar 26, 2006, at 1:53 AM, Melanie Morgan wrote:

 What's the best procedure when reposting videos from another site? Do
 you link from their server or save the video to yours (if you have
 one)? I'm concerned about using my storage space for other people's
 videos, but I'm also concerned (maybe more) about not having missing
 video somewhere down the line if the other site runs into problems.

 Could this also be an ethical issue of some kind? Not sure what to
 think.

What you want to do can be done.

It requires coding the loop of Wordpress not to display posts from the

There are code samples out there to do this since I looked into it once.

Maybe there's a plug in to do it too?

Re: [videoblogging] File size with Sanyo HD1

2006-03-05 Thread Steve Garfield
I think you'd want to compress it before uploading.

For web and aggregator viewing, a local video producer compresses with H.264. That's his suggestion.

It looks really really great.

If you are interested in putting a true HD file up on a host for download to a device that will allow you to watch true HD, then you might want to host those files on a Bit Torrent type of site.

Just a couple of ideas...

You can also export as .mov using an .mp4 codec and make is more universal.

On Mar 5, 2006, at 12:44 PM, Allen Weiner wrote:

I have a Sanyo Xacti first generation, and the MPEG4 files compress quite nicely. I am looking at the HD1 as much for the zoon and (better) low light shooting than for its HD qualities. 100MB would make it unuploadable to many hosts and downright nasty to those who will accomodate such large file sizes--meaning I could go out for a meal and return and it would still be uploading.

Subject: Re: [videoblogging] File size with Sanyo HD1

if it's at all like the older xactis, then i imagine there are settings
for capturing at different sizes and/or quality

however, as a rough guideline, I have heard that you get about 20
minutes of video on the 2GB card

so 1 min is maybe around 100MB?

just guessing here

as a comparison, i recall that eric rice once posted one minute of HD
from his camera (an HC1?) and it was pretty close to that size if I recall.

i think he was using h.264 for export

not sure what codec they are using on the sanyo (mpeg4?)
