Re: Voicebook
Hi Ben, While your watching the list, do you have any idea why this app doesn't pull all of the status updates from my fb feed? There are a few people on my news feed that this app misses with regularity. Is there anything I can do to correct this? Many thanks, Brett. RE: Siri Questions, was Re: Siri's Back!
. I have sometimes used Siri to send a text message to my husband or sister, send me a reminder, or dial a phone number not in my contacts. I get to the point of either saying or double tapping confirm, which I do. But the message is still on my screen, leaving me with the uneasy feeling that it has not yet been sent, even though I have double tapped confirm. . Also, there is an unchecked checkbox and I can't tell what it is for. Finally, there is a listen button which, if I tapped, produces the sound one gets when one engages Siri to begin with. I don't understand the purpose of the listen button if the message has been confirmed or what that checkbox is for. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: low volume on iphone
I was thinking that too. I did clear everything from memory in the app switcher. Still had the problem. I think the problem might be with the app Zellow. I did go in there and noticed that the speaker phone was off. I clicked it on and everything's good again. I did clear it earlier in the app switcher though, so not too sure about it yet. Thanks, everyone. - Original Message - From: David Chittenden To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 11:16 AM Subject: Re: low volume on iphone Hello, Actually, some apps place the sound output in the earpiece rather than the iPhone speaker. When running one of these apps and then leaving the app by pressing home, the command for the iPhone sound to remain in the earpiece remains active until you do enough tasks that the memory manager closes the app completely. It is quicker to go in to the app switcher, double-tap and hold on an app name until you hear VO say editing apps, and then double-tap the app which has locked your sound in the earphone to remove it from the active memory. Re: navigon
Hello. Actually if you have your profile set to either car or pedestrian with voice, you can get turn by turn directions which are appropriate to that type of route. I just used Navigon earlier this week on a pedestrian route and it worked perfectly. I have not had the same troubles that others have had with it. For example, Richard Turner on this list cannot use Navigon where he is because the maps are completely inaccurate. This is a serious flaw in the map data. However if that part is okay where you are, Navigon is really a good app with a lot of features. -- Raul A. In settings under route, I had route profile set to car. When I changed this to pedestrian with voice announcements and then started navigation and tapped options, the turn by turn directions option was not available. I came up with the same short list of options someone else reported seeing. So my conclusion at this point is for whatever reason, when the route profile is set to car, you can get turn by turn directions after starting navigation. If the route profile is set to pedestrian, there are no turn by turn directions. Re: navigon
Hello. Navigon will not announce streets as you're walking. For something like that you will want to use Ariadne GPS. Navigon however will announce what street you are supposed to turn on when you are in a row. You have to set the route to pedestrian with voice directions prior to creating the route. Re: slightly ot: looking for correct imap settings for att/yahoo
Hi Raul, That used to be the case, but not anymore. My iPhone connects to att.net using Imap, while my computer uses Pop. I like this, as all mail stays on the server when I check with the iPhone unless I delete it, and everything goes to my computer and off the server when I check mail with it, and I store it all there. I think that if I deleted the account on the computer and created it again, it would probably be an Imap account. On the iPhone, you just enter your att.net address and password, and everything else is handled automatically. You can control what happens to deleted messages - whether they're removed from the server. I'm not sure how Outlook Express handles the process. Best, Anna On Jul 26, 2012, at 7:11 AM, Raul A. RE: Depositing Checks with the Wells Fargo App
I have not tried to deposit with the Wels fargo App, because they haven't as far as I know, rolled that feature out in California yet. Last I read, they were only making it possible in specific markets. California was not one of them. I do know several sighted folks who use the option with Chase Bank however, and they say it's flawless. So I suppose blind or sighted, it really depends how good you are with the camera. Unfortunately, there are just as many sighted folks who cannot do this as there are blind. Amy Billman Check out my company for your screen protector and phone accessory needs! Olympics Will be Live on Line
BlankThere is an app that you can download and enter your cable/satellite provider into for the live feeds. From canoe to handball, Olympics will be live online By Roger Yu, USA TODAY Lovers of fencing and trampoline, rejoice! For the first time ever, all Olympic events -- including less-popular sports and competition of other countries -- will be available for live-viewing when the London Games kick off today with women's soccer. NBCUniversal, which owns the exclusive U.S. broadcast rights for the Games, will use nine TV channels, a website and a tablet-smartphone app to broadcast and stream the Games to viewers who can prove that they subscribe to cable service. In a testament of how far online viewing has advanced in just four years, all 32 sports and more than 3,500 programming hours will be streamed, including the awarding of all 302 medals. Four years ago, NBC streamed only 25 sports and 2,200 hours during the Beijing Games. Here are some some questions to consider as you wait for the Games to begin: Q: Can I really view any and all live events online, even Guatemala's badminton team? A: Yes. That certain sports were unavailable for viewing was a common complaint in the past Olympics. But thanks to the Internet and mobile apps, the Games' organizers have addressed the issue for those lucky enough to have a broadband connection. For many U.S. viewers, their TV set still will be the go-to platform for watching the Olympics, much of it tape-delayed for prime-time broadcast. But given the limited number of hours on TV, NBCUniversal chose to make all events available on its dedicated Olympics website, NBCOlympics.com. Videos will be archived for evening viewing. Q: Any options for tablet or smartphone users? A: Mobile viewers can also access live events through the free NBC Olympics Live Extra app, available on iOS and Android devices. The app will show every competition, as well as the Olympics content that airs on NBC TV channels. Q: Is the streamed content from the website and the app free? A: Yes and no. It's free if you can verify at log-on that you are a cable subscriber who buys a package that contains MSNBC and CNBC. Customers of all major pay-TV providers are eligible. Q: How do I verify my cable subscription? A: Customers can verify by filling out their username and password -- obtained from their cable provider -- on NBCOlympics.com. If you don't have one, you must obtain a username from the website of your pay-TV provider. Q: What's available on TV? A: NBCUniversal will keep the broadcast of all Olympics events within its family of channels, including Bravo and Telemundo. The main NBC broadcast station will air 270 hours of Olympics programming, limiting it to popular sports and the opening and closing ceremonies. NBC Sports Network, a cable channel owned by NBCUniversal, will air Olympics coverage 14 hours a day, mostly U.S. teams. MSNBC will focus on long-form programming, including features and events that last more than a few minutes. Boxing will air on CNBC, while Bravo is the go-to channel for tennis fans. Telemundo will broadcast selected events in Spanish. Q: Are there any special channels or 3-D programming? A: NBC has developed three dedicated cable channels for soccer, basketball and 3-D programming. The 3-D channel will have about 240 hours of coverage, but viewers will need a 3-D-capable TV set. 3-D events include the opening and closing ceremonies, gymnastics, swimming, bicycle racing and track and field. Q: Are there other websites or apps that will broadcast the Games live? A: No. But there are other options for fans who want ancillary content beyond competitive events. Another free NBC app, NBC Olympics, contains highlights, schedules, results and athlete profiles. Re: navigon
Hello. First load your route in Navigon. Make sure that your route profile is set to vehicle. This is the default so it should already be set that way unless you have changed it. Next press the home button and lunch Ariadne GPS. You can then press the start monitoring button and that is all you need to do. Re: navigon
Hi. As I mentioned in my prior message, Navigon by default is set to a vehicle route profile. So you don't need to change anything to start using it. The default work right out of the box. If you want to use a pedestrian mode then you need to change the route to pedestrian with voice prompts. -- Raul A. -- Raul A. So my conclusion at this point is for whatever reason, when the route profile is set to car, you can get turn by turn directions after starting navigation. Hello Anna. Thank you for correcting me. I really had no idea. That is very good though because many people really like IMAP over pop three. -- Raul A. I think that if I deleted the account on the computer and created it again, it would probably be an Imap account. On the iPhone, you just enter your att.net address and password, and everything else is handled automatically. I say loading time is about 20 seconds now compared to about 1 minute for the initial release. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2012 5:12 PM Subject: Fleksy update is in the app store Hello Listers, I am sure everybody will find it sooner or later, but the first Fleksy update is available for download. Listed improvements and new features are: Loading time reduced by 50% Improved Word Recognition Engine Manual capitalization is now possible Improved stability Export and import custom dictionary, you can also edit before importing to add or remove words New way to enter symbols, press and hold the keyboard then move your finger to the top of the keyboard for different groups of symbols. Swipe down in each group to get more symbols in the group Same gesture inputs new line if you move your finger to the bottom right of the screen or bring up the number keyboard at bottom left of the screen. Improve swipe recognition engine I can definitely confirm the loading time improvement although it is much better than 50% faster. The initial Fleksy release on my 4S took about 28 or 30 seconds to load, just now it took about 10 or 12 seconds. One thing I noticed is that when I double tapped the app, almost immediately I get a message saying that I just had to approx. type where I thought the letters were, sort of a mini explanation of how it works, then there was a Cool, I got it and a More button. The Cool, I got it then loaded the app with the familiar initial interface and the More took me into Safari and loaded the full user guide, keep in mind that reader is available for this so it's easy to read it without extra stuff getting in the way. That message came up again when I exited and went back to Fleksy, but now it doesn't seem to do so any more. I hope this will stay like this because I don't certainly need to tap Cool, I got it each time I want to get in the app., but now Happy tapping, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Olympics Will be Live on Line
BlankBut is the app accessible; as of a week ago it was totally not. - Original Message - From: Steve To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2012 11:39 AM Subject: Olympics Will be Live on Line There is an app that you can download and enter your cable/satellite provider into for the live feeds. RE: Typing with Fleksy
Hi. Tap and hold on the Fleksy keyboard and slide your finger up until you pass the first row of letters and you will then be in the row of punctuation groups. It's located where you would normally expect to find numbers on a standard qwerty keyboard. Once in that row of punctuations and symbols, you can slide left or right to pick a group at which point you can then slide up or down to choose a symbol from that group. Honestly, it sounds way more complicated than it actually is. Once you try it you'll see it's quite easy and much better than the old symbols keyboard from past versions. Hi there. Try this: Press and hold anywhere on the keyboard. Move your finger to the top of the keyboard. You will hear some symbol keys. Each represents a symbol group. Choose the dollar symbol, for example. You can then swipe down to get other currencies. Similarly, if you choose the left parenthesis you can swipe down to get other types of brackets, and so on. Wow, thanks so much for your prompt reply! You guys are awesome at wanting to make it really usable for us. I must ask my other question I sent to support when the first version came out. I am writing an email. I write the email and want to go back and re-read. When I do by either putting it up to my ear or tapping 3 times on home, I find I want to re-word or fix a word or just put in another word way at the beginning of my email. Is there a way to do this in Fleksy? If not, when I get to the front screen and before I actually put it in an email is there a way to do this. Do I have to put it in an email and then flick up and down and use the Apple keyboard to correct? As there is no voice in Fleksy, as there is in Jaws, I sometimes put words in that are not correct tenses just because I am concentrating on keeping sentences going and forget what I was typing. This will come in time with use, but I can see a need for being able to correct directly in Fleksy. List recorder podcasts
Very much need podcasts on list recorder. However, when I went to listen to the newest one I was directed to the developer's website as I am a very new user and might get confused. I went to the site, and it is saying I need a special player to get the podcasts. Is there a way I can listen to them on my PC running Windows-XP? That way I can do what is described as I am listening. I also do not want the file name which will only work on apple devices. Reggie Thanks for the response. The current version of Fleksy does not yet have editing functionality - you have to do this in the Mail interface. Reggie -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: SayText, was RE: another scanning app?
I have started recomending Prizmo to people who ask me about OCR on the iPhone as I get very little from other apps I have tried and although Prizmo hasn't quite given me what my KNFB gave me it is getting close. It may be down to a simple thing of the camera being in the corner of the phone and little things like that that take work to adjust. The cheapest, no but for me money well spent on Prizmo. On 16 Jul 2012, at 18:48, Richard Turner wrote: O Scanning Queen, First, I have no idea why the blue text. Let me know if it is still blue and I'll do some investigating. As for SayText, I just tried it again. No beeps, nada. I switched to Prizmo and got an almost perfect scan. I then switched back to SayText and tried again. Still nothing. This is with an iPhone 4S. Since Prizmo got an excellent result, I'm fairly sure that it isn't a lighting issue or a case issue. Perhaps I'm not waiting long enough for the beeps? How long does that take for you? (Sent from my iPhone) On Jul 16, 2012, at 8:38 AM, Sandy Tomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote: Richard, first things first: did you know that your message appeared on my iPhone with lovely blue text? I have not noticed this with anyone else's post. What is your secret eh? OK, slowly isn't actually necessary at all! I say that to encourage control re the maintaining of the horizontal plane. I often get good success by lifting the phone pretty quick to the right height and BANG! I hear the beeps and the shutter and then I just wait till I hear OCR results Indeed, it may be that for some people lifting quickly in a swift and assured motion, may result in better scans. Now, how high? Hmm, the issue with saytext is to get enough height to allow the camera to see all four edges of the paper. When it sees all four edges it will beep, so if you have not heard the beeps it must be that you have not lifted high enough. However, if you lift too high, the picture may be taken but you may not get any usable info from the scan because it was too far away. Working on the assumption that you are reading from a piece of foolscap, I think you need to lift about 18 inches (sorry, too old to make the conversion to metric today!) A general sort of guide line might be, it you are standing, and I always suggest standing when learning to use these apps, at a table, I probably lift the phone to about mid-chest. does that help? Another thing to do with all of these apps, it is what I did before I started to get good results, was to find yourself a sighted assistant who would hold the phone along with you, and in that way, between you they will take the phone to the right height, saytext will take the shot and you will feel the approximate right height. Indeed, I am finding that SayText is becoming my scanning app of preference! Even over Prizmo. Prizmo is always worth having onboard for those really tricky documents that SayText just wont manage, but for the majority of the time, I find SayText the easiest, most intuitive and, very often, the best at giving good results, of all the scanning apps. As yet, I have not had any sort of readable results from Text Detective, but must admit that SayText was the same at the beginning, so, maybe, I will be singing its praises after the next update, however, for now, I would recommend SayText, which, I think, is still free? Could be wrong about that though. If it is, I would highly recommend people to give it a try, you will see what I mean about ease of use, but you do have to lift the phone till you hear the beeps, moving it slowly higher and higher till you hear them, then waiting for the click of the camera. Fleksy symbols
hi all, the Fleksy symbols have changed, probably for the better. Instead of using the rotor simply enter a period, then put your finger on the top row of letters. as you move left to right you will hear, At, dot, number sign, dollar sign, left parenthesis, slash, and five. Each one of these is a group, which once selected, you can swipe up and down for more choices. For example, if you hear dot, then lift your finger, now swipe down you will hear dot com, dot org, dot EDU, dot Gov. and dot net. When you hear five swipe up or down to select a number from 1 to 12. ETC. If you need the number pad, go to the bottom left of the screen, you will hear numbers lift to enter the number pad. Do the same to toggle back to letters. Touch the bottom right corner to insert a new line. You can still insert a new line by swiping right and holding. Continue to hold your finger there to insert blank lines. I was a bit confused at first, but after playing with it for a short time I am comfortable with the new design. Help calling apple please
Hi all, Is anyone able to tell me how I go about calling Apple? I'm in the UK. I need to report a problem with my face time, it isn't working properly. And the only way I can think of resolving it is to call them and ask them. I think I do have AppleCare, but I have no idea how it works, as I never used it, and cannot read the information. The AppleCare too is for my Mac, and the problem I am having with face time is actually on my iPhone, is it still valid? Really, I would like a phone number in the UK to call, where they might help me. I know I can email the accessibility, but I would like to speak to a person. Does anyone have any ideas or know where I could go to find a suitable phone number? A MyWay question
Hi Jon, I don't know about the importing of map files in MyWay Classic, because I've only used the free MyWay Lite version. You can find both apps if you search under Swiss Federation for the Blind – or even just type Swiss and the first two letters f e after a space. They updated both apps at the end of May and the version 1.1.0 fixed the bug where you'd get an error message when editing the name of a waypoint to rename it, and also seemed to fix the error where adding waypoints from contacts to the middle of your route gave the Missing or invalid latitude message for addresses in parts of the country. (For example, addresses for west coast states in the U.S. from California through Washington, and British Columbia in Canada would fail, while east coast states from Florida through New York, but not Maine, would work, as would Ontario in Canada, in version 1.0. I assume this is fixed, since it is fixed for me, but I never saw any discussion of this issue on AppleVis, or elsewhere other than the early comments by myself, Cara, and Jim Barbour on this list.) RE: Fleksi's favorites
While we're on the subject of Fleksy, I'd like to throw another question out there. I'm a very recent iPhone convert who's only on day 4 with the machine, but I love it already and am extending that enthusiasm to Fleksy, which I downloaded yesterday. I'm getting the sense from earlier traffic on this list, though, that an update has been released already? Could it be that I missed the better version by less than 12 h ours? :) If someone could clarify this for me and let me know how to update the current install, I'd be very grateful. All the best, Michelle (who will no doubt pester the list some more in the near future) _ From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Chuck Dean Sent: July 26, 2012 8:46 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Fleksi's favorites hi Jen, every email address or phone number you put into the favorites field, separated by a comma, will show on the Fleksy interface screen. RE: Stylus pen for apple devices
Hi Carol, Dianne, and Others, I'm not sure how useful a stylus would be to a blind user for the iPhone, as Richard stated. I have tried borrowing a stylus from a colleague to use on the iPad screen. If you do want to try one out, I'm not aware of any good brands that are sold in the Apple retail stores that you can test. At our Apple Stores, some sales people use the Pogo Stylus or Pogo Sketch+. This is pretty skinny, like a thin pen, and the Pogo Stylus had. Sort of foam end that didn't hold up well. The stylus that I tried, and that colleagues like, was the AluPen by Just Mobile. It is an aluminum stylus that is thicker than a lot of pen-style styluses, and more comfortable to grip, because it's hexagonal in shape. When you hold it, your thumb, forefinger, and side of your middle finger rest against three of the six sides of the hexagon, and the top end of the stylus rests against the part of your hand between thumb and forefinger. Because these are all flat surfaces, it's very comfortable, and the stylus won't roll away when you put it down because of the hexagonal shape. It's about the height of the iPhone in length, and about the width of a AA battery, if you shaved the circular profile of the battery into a hexagon with six flat sides instead of a circle. I think that if you wanted to use a stylus because of hand tremor, this might work for you.You can order these from Amazon for about $15 in different colors. I don't know anyone around me who has bought these from a store, both because it's $10 cheaper from Amazon, and we don't have this product in local stores. Here's a link to the AluPen at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Just-Mobile-AP-818-Just-Mobile-AluPen/dp/B0042U9AT6 HTH. Re: Fleksi's favorites
Hi Michelle , You may have missed the update this morning. To check for updates, double tap on the app store icon, and on the bottomthere are 5 buttons, the one on the right is updates. double tap on this and yo will be given a list of all apps that have updates ready to install. In the upper right corner there will be a button that says Update all. Or you can open each update and do each one manually. Either way, voice over will ask you for your user I D and password. The I D should already be inserted. Chuck On Thursday, July 26, 2012 6:43:15 PM UTC-7, Michelle McQuigge wrote: While we're on the subject of Fleksy, I'd like to throw another question out there.
