RE: IOS 6.0 and Voice Over
Certainly using iTunes could be a work-around until Apple hopefully fixes this. Let's just hope the new release of iTunes in October doesn't cause all sorts of accessibility problems. I really like having my iPhone and it's great that Apple has done what they have done, but let's not forget that the iCloud website has been and still is more or less inaccessible and it's been around for a year. The sky isn't falling in, and the App Store isn't inaccessible. I update apps in iOS6 daily. I think it is true to say that the information conveyed by VoiceOver could be more helpful. First, the behaviour of the App Store has changed. As has already been said in this thread, you no longer need to enter your password when you update. You do, however, contrary to some speculation in blogs a while ago, still have to enter your password when you install a free app. When you update an app, you are no longer taken out of the App Store and placed on the page the app is installed on. Instead, you simply stay in the App Store, right where you are. When you double tap the update button, I can see nothing that gives you confirmation that the app update has begun downloading. However, if you go to your home screen right away, you will be able to see that it in fact has, because you can see the percentage of the download and install changing. So in no way do I think this should be seen as a reason not to update. yes, it would be nice if the update button changed to an updating, or downloading, button after it is pressed, but it isn't inaccessible at all. I have an Alva BC640 and a RefreshaBraille. Both work well with my iPhone. That said, I prefer the Refreshabraille because I can turn it on and off whilst my iPhone is unlocked and it connects and disconnects without difficulties. My Alva, on the other hand, requires that I lock my iPhone before I turn the Alva on. After the display is on, I unlock my iPhone and the Alva automatically connects. However, when I write in 8 dot computer braille, the Alva is easier because all 8 dots are in a row (40 cells gives more room for the keyboard). On the Refreshabraille, dots 7 and 8 are next to the spacebar, so harder to press dot 7 for capitalisation. National Braille Press, NBP, in the US has a braille brochure with the computer braille code. They also use to sell a book training on computer braille. In computer braille, the letters are the same, numbers are dropped to the lower part of the 6 dot cell (1 is dot 2, 2 is dots 2 3, 3 is dots 2 5, Etc.), and there are unique symbols for each punctuation mark. Upper-case letters are the same as lower-case letters with dot 7 added. I write computer braille at the same speed that I write contracted braille. For large files, I find my iPhone 4 does better in 8 dot mode rather than contracted braille mode. Also, in contracted braille mode, iOS has a half second buffer. If you stop writing for half a second, whatever is in the buffer is translated and written to the field. Braille entry works whenever the keyboard is activated. Also, almost everything VO speaks is simultaneously displayed in braille. I regularly take notes in braille during meetings with speech muted. And I can confirm the fact that APple can make backend changes without releasing a new app. THis is also true with iTunes and the Mac App store (obviously for the Mac). I have seen issues in the app that was corrected without a new version being downloaded which leads me to believe there is some html code that can be changed. Also, the stores aren't supposed to be rolled out completely until the 19th, so it's quite possible they're going to make a change within the next few days before the release goes public. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jonathan Mosen Sent: Sunday, September 16, 2012 9:23 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6 Yup, I can confirm this. Originally found on the applevis website, it's an article explaining that a few days before ios 6 is released, the app store is inaccessible in most areas. Article below: A Warning to VoiceOver Users Ahead of the Release of iOS 6 article region start Submitted by David on 16 September 2012 Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team As you should be aware, our stated policy is to allow no postings on this site which would be a breach of Apple's Non Disclosure Agreement. Essentially, this Agreement places legal restrictions on what can be publicly revealed about beta versions of Apple software. Posting specific and detailed information about iOS 6 before it is released to the public on 19 September would in most cases be a breach of this Agreement, and could place you at risk of legal action by Apple. However, we have been alerted to a significant accessibility issue that is likely to be present in iOS 6, and we believe that with the public release just a few days away, we would be failing the community if we did not issue a warning. There are likely to be some who will condemn our decision. All that we can say is that it is not something we have done lightly and without much discussion. Here is the problem as we understand it: At the time of writing, the App Store app is virtually unusable with VoiceOver on the version of iOS 6 that was released to developers last week. This release is commonly referred to as the Gold Master, and is effectively the final version. This problem has been reported and replicated by several iPhone users. We are unable to confirm whether the same problem exists on the iPad. The App Store app has been significantly rewritten for iOS 6, with changes made to the way that content is displayed and navigated. There are 5 tabs in the app: Featured Top Charts Genius Search Updates Of these, only the Updates tab appears to be fully accessible with VoiceOver. Results on the Search tab are no longer displayed as a vertical list. Instead, each app is displayed on its own page. When not using VoiceOver, you flick to the left or right to navigate through the search results. This allows for more information about each app to be shown. We assume that it is also considered to be more visually appealing and engaging. When using VoiceOver, only the first search result is easily accessible. If you swipe right through the first search result, VoiceOver will read subsequent results in much the same way that it always has. However, visually, the screen is still displaying the first result, and double-tapping on the name of subsequent apps will achieve nothing. Each page in the search results indicates what page it is - 1 of 250 for example. However, this is only recognized by VoiceOver on the first page if you tap directly on it or swipe left from the bottom bar of tab buttons. Although this element might seem similar to the one present on your

Re: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6
Marc, Before folks go running off on a tangent about accessibility, Steve Jobs, and so forth I think it is important to point out: 1. Steve Jobs, although a great man, was not the exclusive determining factor for Voiceover in Apple's products. 2. Just because Steve has passed on does not mean Apple will abandon accessibility. 3. There has been articles posted by the U.S. Department of Treasury (a year or two ago) that indicates there are over 100,000 blind/visually impaired users of iPhones. Note iPhones and the article did not mention iPads etc. 4. Apple has to balance accessibility against all the other projects that are ongoing. There are resources dedicated to many projects and some projects get more resources than others. Fact is accessibility may not get the same level of resources as other projects; however, you have to understand it is always a challenge trying to be sure resources are managed in such a way to ensure overall mission/goals/objectives are addressed without impacting the largest user community. I may not be explaining that as well as I could, but the idea is you put the resources on whatever will maximize profits and make no mistake that Apple is about making money. Oh and I'm all for Apple making money and buckets of it. MOre money means more resources and more resources means more likelihood accessibility gets attention. 5. Apple is the only mainstream company to my knowledge that has invested so heavily into accessibility. 6. A lot of developers have committed to making their apps accessible, so accessibility has really gained such a considerable amount of attention that there is support beyond even this community. You can bet if Apple ever decided to drop accessibility, we would have a good deal of support. I'm not lecturing you here Marc, but merely pointing out (because this comes up on the list from time to time) that APple has committed to accessibility and like any other aspect of software things get broken and hopefully fixed. I think a lot of the issues we all have experienced from time to time and still do in some cases is not being ignored. When you consider the size and scope of a project such as iOS itself, you can imagine the number of people working on such a project. Add to that the layers of management and development protocols etc… I'm not surprised that it takes a while to address problems. Sluggish iPhone voice over
Hello all, Has anyone noticed in the last two days that voice over has become much more sluggish? Is this because of the new version coming this week? I an going to turn off my phone again to see is it helps, but does anybody have any further thoughts on what I can do? It happens in email and focus for Facebook, so is makes me think it might not be VO at all. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks. Just saw the problem again reading post in Fleksy. Seems to be leaving out words and then cutting in again with a sharp sort of voice as if someone has pushed a button for her to talk in the middle of a word. Now not so sure of my initial thought. Re: Sluggish iPhone voice over
Hi Reggie If you are finding that VO is just generally sluggish in various parts of your phone then this is not related in any way to the up coming iOS release. VO is not like Siri in that it doesn't need to check in with apple servers to provide feedback. I would recommend that you clear out your app switcher and then restart your phone by holding down the lock and home buttons for 10 seconds. Interesting because I was told differently by two other reps. So, I guess we will not know until iOS 6 is out and folks try it. I think that is one way to really answer such questions since the reps are obviously not informed, which for the record may not even be their fault. Lots of info to communicate and not all organizations are always efficient in getting the word to the right people. Re: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6
Hey Scott, I totally understand what you mean. Like I said, I'm trying not to jump the gun or anything -- it's more a paranoia of mine than a valid fear. I fully acknowledge that Apple has too much money to lose if they drop accessibility from their products, especially with the communities that have been created online (such as this one) because of it. I think it's more a case of it feeling too good to be true still. No other mainstream companies provide this level of support for the blind/visually-impaired, imo, and sometimes it feels like the other shoe should be dropping at any second. I know Apple does it for money but I don't really care as long as I am getting value for my money. There's a reason I'm switching to an iMac in the coming months, after all. :) -Marc On 9/17/12, Scott Howell scottn3...@gmail.com wrote: Marc, Before folks go running off on a tangent about accessibility, Steve Jobs, and so forth I think it is important to point out: 1. Re: Why I No Longer Preorder iPhone From A T T Wireless
But thats kinda the point. You need to have a certain type of plan. Chances are, the plan you have is cheaper than the one they would want you to switch to to have facetime over cellular enabled. Many people would consider this a charge. Obviously, ATT does not. haha. But it is in their interest to not tout this as a charge. Shrug. When I have to possibly pay more, for something everyone else in the world is getting for free, its tough not for me to personally consider that as a charge. JMO. Just two other points here. Accessibility like any other project may have it's priority rise and fall as other projects priorities change or as Apple perceives it's lead in the accessibility area growing or shrinking. this is no different than any other project. I agree that Apple has done a lot as a main stream company with respect to accessibility, but I'm not positive that their investment is light years ahead of other main stream companies. I know for example, Google has quite a bit invested in accessibility right now between ChromeVox, Android and their on line services, such as Google Docs. IBM also came out with their own screen reader for OS/2, which I know is ancient history, but their investment to accessibility has continued with contributions to FireFox and the accessibility of products such as Lotus Notes, Sametime and Symphony. I also don't see Apple changing on a dime just because Steve Jobs is no longer with them. Who knows how this will effect Apple in the long run, but I'm sure he delegated some things before his death, and I'm sure there are others at Apple who shared and understood his vision. Re: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6
You know I've not been much a fan of Chrome or the ChromVox, but you know I understand it is still early in its development. WHat I am pleased by is the fact that GOogle also is investing in accessibility and I hope other companies will see the benefits and jump on the wagon as well. Do I want to see vendors such as FS or GW Micro go out of business? No, but at the same time if that were to happen it means that finally accessibility has reached a mainstream status and that can be a good (as well as a bad ) thing. All this means is if you looked back just five or so years ago, who ever thought we would have access to these touch-screen devices to the level we do today. Actually when you consider the entire 20 plus years of screen reading technology and look just in the last five or six years at what has been accomplished, well it is pretty amazing. I'm not lecturing you here Marc, but merely pointing out (because this comes up on the list from time to time) that APple has committed to accessibility and like any other aspect of software

Re: Fifth gen ipod
Here you go: Apple has unveiled its next-generation iPod touch . It looks like an iPhone 5 , with the same 4 inch, 1136 x 640 pixel display. But the 5th-generation iPod touch doesn’t make phone calls, it’s even thinner than the new iPhone, and it has a last-generation processor. that’s because the new iPod touch has a faster processor, bigger screen, and a better camera, among other improvements. The 5th-gen iPod touch measures 6.1mm (0.24 inches) thick and weighs 88 grams (3.1 ounces). It’s the thinnest and lightest iPod touch to date, even though it has the largest screen yet. It’s powered by an Apple A5 processor — much like the iPad 2 or the iPhone 4. That’s a step up from the 4th generation iPod touch, which has an A4 chip, but it falls short of the new A6 processor in the iPhone 5. Apple says that chip offers twice the graphics and CPU performance of an A5. Apple says the iPod touch is the “world’s most popular” media player, and also portable gaming device — and the new dual core chip should help boost gaming performance. The new iPod touch has a 5MP camera, LED flash and autofocus — features which weren’t available on the fixed-focus camera on the last iPod touch. Apple is also included a panorama mode and support for 1080p HD video recording with the rear camera. Like the iPhone 5, there’s a new FaceTime HD front-facing camera which can shoot 720p video, and the company has added an optional wrist strap which comes in handy if you plan to use the iPod touch as a point-and-shoot camera, or hand it to your kid for mobile gaming. Apple is adding Bluetooth 4.0 to the iPod touch, along with dual-channel 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi. The iPod touch also now gets AirPlay mirroring support, letting you pair the device with an Apple TV to stream games, videos, or other content to a TV. And for the first time, you can now use Siri voice recognition on the iPod touch. Apple iPod touch 5th gen Apple will offer 5 color options: yellow, pink, blue, black, and white. The 5th-gen iPod touch goes up for pre-order this week and should ship in October. A 32GB model costs $299, while a 64GB model runs $399. Apple will also offer a cheaper option: The 4th-gen iPod touch. The company is keeping the older models alive, but it’s phasing out the 8GB version. -Original Message- From: Shirley and maisie Sent: Monday, September 17, 2012 8:50 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Fifth gen ipod What is the differences between the fourth and fiften gen ipod touch? RE: Fifth gen ipod
Shirley, I suggest you check Apple's website and maybe listen to the Keynote from last week as the 5th Gen iPods were introduced there. In short, it is a major update, in my opinion much more so than that between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. I guess it's more like the difference between the iPhone 4 and 5. The main things are that the new iPod Touch line now has the larger 4 inch retina screen same as the iPhone 5, they have the A5 processor same as the iPhone 4S, the front camera is 720P High definition and the back camera went to a 5 Megapixel auto focus which is a huge improvement. It also has the new small dock connector and the improved dual band WiFi and on top of all that it has SIRI. Those are the main things, another nice feature is that it comes with a detacheable wrist strap and the new ear pod headphones. Still 16, 32 and 64 Gig for same price as old iPod 4th Gen, $199, $299 and $399, respectively. I have a unlocked 4S without contract, but I don't see much point in upgrading to the iPhone 5, but when I bought my first iPhone 2 years ago I sold my iPod Touch Third Generation, now I will most likely buy a 64 Gig fifth Generation again to use at home and as a companion device to my iPhone. Only thing that might change my mind is the iPad Mini which will possibly be announced in October so I probably will wait to see how much Apple Goodness will be inside that one. Not that I'm aware of. When switching back and forth between languages, I first have to go to the language option in the rotor and change the language and then go to the speed and flick down or up to adjust the speech output. RE: Fifth gen ipod
Outside of the visual aspects, it's more or less a small iPad and maybe a better option for us blind if having to pick between the two especially now that it has Siri. unlocking digit-eyes features?
Hi, I'm trying to get to all the features of digit-eyes barcode scanner and labeller so that I can create an account and sign in, set up a bluetooth barcode reader, and so on. All I see though, is a scan button, copyright notice and scanning tips button. I hit the scanning tips button and it brought up a website in the program with an overwelming array of info. So, for example, I tapped set up a laser scanner and it didn't come up with any information on the topic that I could find. I checked the settings but there's no settings panel for digit-eyes. Hi all. I live in Northern Ontario Canada. Hear we have Telis, Rodgers, and bell for our loacle cell phone market. as a blind person who has never owned a iphone or any i device before I would like to know witch one would be the best phone to get when it comes to accessibility and support?keeping in mind that I live alone and a pair of eyes are not always that easy to come bye. Right now I have eastlink for my phone, internet, and cable. it is all under 1 bill now eastlink is not a cell phone company. with them I pay ruffley around 198 a month. and taking in to account that my rent is 475 a month and that I get 1114 from odsp. I just was wondering as a blind person living on a fixed income if this would be even a worth wile move? I have aflip cell phone with Telis it is a pay as you go and has 100 pree paid minutes on it. I talked to Telis and asked them if I would be able to trade this phone in for a iphone and they said not with out going on a 3 year contract. I also am using windows xp on my pc and windows 7 on my laptop so I would also like to know how things like that would work when it comes to downloading ring tones and other things like using I tunes with a windows pc? many thanks for any help that any Canadians who live in northern Ontario can give me with this. from Mich. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. When I first started this thread I was expecting to learn about additions and improvements in Voice Over Instead I waws disappointed, dejected and not pleasantly surprised at the content of the posts. I was looking forward with big eyes and great expectation at new features and hoping for new improvements in Voice Over in the new iOS 6.0. Can someone please post some good news? Re: Preordered my iPhone 5!
Hi. I preordered my iPhone 5 64 GB in white on Friday evening. I should get it in October, though I certainly hope it is sooner. After reading the messages on list about the carrier stores being full of people wanting to preorder, I am glad that I called Apple to order mine. I think that people are going to show up in droves this Friday, and that stores will sell out quickly. I heard from someone on Twitter saying he was going to go to the Sprint store to get his. Though he doesn't think the lines will be long, I say that strange things happen when a new iPhone comes out. Seems like the masses come out as well, :) I am upgrading from an iPhone 4, mainly to get more up to date hardware. I've had issues with my 4 in the last few weeks and am ready for new hardware. RE: IOS 6.0 and Voice Over
Hi Avnish, There are a few people on here who have developer accounts and have been using the various beta versions of iOS 6, if they take the NDA seriously and I think most of them do, they can't talk about it. Anything else is information available online to anybody. iOS 6 has some very nice new features, but if you are expecting some sort of new miracle Voiceover you will most likely be disappointed. Don't forget, Voiceover itself is an iOS feature and not a stand-alone product. I assume Voiceover will work pretty much the same on iOS 6 as it did with iOS 5. Maybe a few bugs are fixed and maybe a few new ones show up, but we all have to wait until Wednesday morning Pacific time before we get a go at iOS 6. Sorry I couldn't make your day, but I think for the time being both the iPhone as well as iOS which includes Voiceover will continue to evolve year after year and maybe at some point we see again something revolutionary instead of just evolutionary and then who knows if it will come from Apple, Microsoft, Google or RIM. Re: Introduction
Greetings! and welcome to the Ihponeland! I've had mine for almost 2 months, thus would like to give you some tips and resources I found useful. First of all go to http://www.visionaustralia.org/atpodcasts/ where you'll find especially the Iphone/Ipod tutorials which are great! They gave me clarification on little details and also got me to explore and not be afraid to learn things on my own. Afterwards I'd recommend the Apple Vis site which also has great info! It's address is http://applevis.com Now as for activating VoiceOver, usually if the phone is right out of the box and not set up yet, do a triple click home button; if not, as I did, ask the store implyees to activate VoiceOver for you by going to Settings; General; Accessibility and click on VoiceOver and the phone should start talking! Siri is used more as an extra feature but diesn'doesn't replace VoiceOver. Hope this helps and again welcome to the list! You'll learn a lot! RE: Fifth gen ipod
The new iPod Touch supposedly has the same chip as the 5S and iPad 2 (A5 chip). I like my iPad secodn generation, but I more than often find myself going back to my iPhone for quite nearly everything since I prefer using one hand when possible to work with the smaller screen. My sighted wife mainly uses my iPad now because of the visual aspects. The one app I absolutely prefer on my iPad than the iPhone and I would imagine it would be the same for the iPod touch is FeeddLer because it can show up to 100 rss entries at a time instead of the 20 items on an iPhone. If it weren't for my wife using the iPad so much, I'd give serious consideration of selling the tablet (64 GB) and maybe scoring one or two iPods if not the iPad mini depending on what it'll contain. RE: a warning to voice over users concerning IOS 6
Hi Shawn, assuming this issue isn't fixed for a while, you wouldn't have to plug your phone in. Wireless syncing is available in iOS, plus, if you enable automatic downloads, you can purchase something in iTunes and it will be pushed to your phone automatically. Not at all underplaying the issue, just offering work-arounds for a situation that I very much hope is temporary. Re: Preordered my iPhone 5!
Hi, This really does depend on where you go. I remember the day I got my iPhone 4, there was a line blocks long at the Apple store. At the local Radio Shack, I walked in, 1 person was ahead of me, come to think of it, we were the only customers in the store, and I bought my iPhone. So, I would think one going to an Apple store the morning of launch will be standing on a pretty long line. Not so much in the evening or, at another store all together. Go to apps in the sources tree or sources table depending on platform, and click the button indicating how many updates are available. Next click download all free updates. Re: IOS 6.0 and Voice Over
I will add that you can search for apps by going to the Itunes store. The search results will have a heading something like Iphone apps. The Features and the Charts I don't believe you can just do by turning on and off the VO. I will make this statement on behalf of AppleVis. The App Store is the only major problems we have found. As for the other issues with in the IOS 6 itself is very minor. There are bugs but nothing major at all. I don't believe we have ever said there were major issues but we have said there were other issues. So I don't like the way people on here would say we at AppleVis are blowing smoke. Even if there are none, I'm sure it's something easily fixable since the changes to the stores don't' require a new version of iOS itself.
