RE: question

2018-10-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Anthony, You should also explain if you want to do this on an iPhone or on a
computer and, if a computer, is it a Windows system with Jaws or a different
screenreader.
I use a Windows PC with Jaws and I use Outlook for my email client, here is how
this works for me:
If I want to reply to somebody privately I press Shift+Tab when I am at the
beginning of the message until I get to the "From" field, probably you have to
press it 5 or 6 times.
Below is an example of what that looks like using your message to the list:

>From read only edit viphone@googlegroups.com on behalf of anthony borg
>

When you shift+tab into that field your cursor is at the end of the line, you
can now press left arrow once and the entire name and email address of the
person who is sending the message will be highlighted, using Jaws speech
history it sounds like this:

anthony borg

Now if you press Shift+F10 you get a context menu, the first option in it is
Cut and if you down arrow once you have Copy. Press enter and you now just
copied the email address of the person to your clipboard.
Now you can simply use Control+R to reply to the message, press Shift+tab again
until you get to the "To" field which would have viphone@GoogleGroups.com in
it, backspace until that is deleted and press Control+V to paste in the address
in your clipboard which should be the address of the sender of the message and
at this point you can tab again to the message body and write your reply which
will only go to the sender of the message.

You can try also to simply press Shift+Control+R, this is a Jaws keystroke
which is supposed to reply directly to the sender of the message not to the
list, but I find it doesn't always work or maybe it works on some lists but not
others, so far I have had no luck with it on the Viphone list. If you use Jaws
you can easily check what is in the "To" field by pressing Alt+3 when you are
composing a message, it will read the "To" field, Alt+5 will read the subject
field and if you press Alt+5 twice quickly it will move the cursor into the
subject field.

Hi sieghard
That's exactly what I need to know. How to get an email address of somebody I
have on the list and to write privately or not.
The important thing at this stage is how to get it and then add it to the added
field.
Thanks that you have mentioned that outlook is also available for I o s

Re: Good God what a tedious XR experience

2018-10-29 Thread Kelly Pierce
First, Apple no longer describes its retail locations as stores. Apple
just calls them Apple. The company has redefined itself as seling
experiences through technology rather than a tech hardware company.
the problem with the word store is that it suggests a shopping
experience. someone might visit Apple to buy a device. He might also
visit for a repair, ask a question, attend a class, participate in an
Apple user group, meet other Apple device users to discuss Apple
devices or services, or use the free Wifi.

As for the crowds, welcome to the world of 1.3 billion active Apple
ID's. Apple has not added locations at the same rate as the expanding
user base. Also, Apple locations here inn Chicago have become tourist
attractions. Many people visit Apple to see products in person or
people watch. They are not there to do anything specific. There is
always a group of folks who walk in a circle around the building for
10 or 15 minutes before leaving.

Hi Lee,
There is an app called myTuner. There is also a myTuner Pro, which is the one I
have. I don’t know the differences anymore. But the app doesn’t support Siri
shortcuts. For instance, if there is a station you like, once you have tune to
that station, you can then easily make a Siri shortcut wear from the main
screen, you can just say your shortcut word or phrase, and myTuner opens to
that station and starts playing it.

Subject: report of missing Sim card

Hello, I have a six month old iPhone eight, living in an otter box, and
yesterday it reported no Sim card. When I try to use the phone as a phone,
it's reporting no signal.

My Apple dealer is 20 miles from me, and it may take some doing to get
there.

How can I check this myself? Can one of these tiny cards come loose or go
bad?

Any advice would be helpful.

Gratefully

Re: Watch and a step app

2018-10-29 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello,

No, there is an app actually called Activity. It is an app made by Apple and
is tied to your activity rings and workouts. On top of having this
information, it also has the number of steps you have done. You can look at
this information by day, month, and maybe even year. I just usually look at
mine by day.
If you can not find it, ask Siri to open the Activity app.

RE: iPhone 8, iPhone xr battery chargers Question Please.

2018-10-29 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Nope. Just the standard cable and wall plug. The 8/8 Plus came with the
lightening adaptor, but not this year's. And while I think it's cheap and
nikcle and dimeish on Apple's part to not include this or even some sort of
USBC charger considering the price of the phone, but don't base your
ultimate choice on whether or not one of these are included.

Hi Everyone,
Well, I'm finally going to take the plunge, and buy a new iPhone, as I
definitely need one. I'm not sure yet if I will buy an iPhone 8 or the new
xr yet though. My question is does a battery charger come with the phone 8
or the xr phone?
Thank you all in advance.

iPhone 8, iPhone xr battery chargers Question Please.

2018-10-29 Thread janet gross
Hi Everyone,
Well, I'm finally going to take the plunge, and buy a new iPhone, as I
definitely need one. I'm not sure yet if I will buy an iPhone 8 or the new xr
yet though. My question is does a battery charger come with the phone 8 or the
xr phone?
Thank you all in advance.

I figured out that when voice over starts reading items on the screen as I move
my finger from the top or bottom of the screen that I am moving it too slowly.
When I move my finger a little faster the tones are all that are “spoken”.

I also figured out that if I do not hear the tone at the top or bottom of the
screen that I have not started my finger movement in the right place.

Hello,

Yes you can set up the assistive touch option and have menu options. This will
show up as a small dot on the screen that you can actually set to utilize the
home gesture, app switcher, Notification Center and control center. It’s not
ideal but it could work as a work around in noisy situations.

Please let me know if you need or want any further assistance setting this
option up. You can email me off list at e...@overhereconsulting.net

You should also have haptic feedback meaning there should be a vibration when

Hi All

I now have my new Apple Watch series 4 so will be asking you all questions
over the coming days.

Firstly, though in the activity app it doesn't count your steps.

Is there a fully accessable app to download for counting steps on my watch?

Thank you.

First go to settings/sounds and make sure that haptics is turned on for
interactions.
Secondly, make sure that your sound is set to the highest possible. The higher
the sound, the stronger the vibration.

RE: Screen Brightness Annoyance When Rebooting iPhone 8 Plus

2018-10-29 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I had autobrightness turned on, but founda few times where it was still going
anywhere from 40% to 60% or whatever even with screen curtain on.
Didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of always checking to make sure the
feature worked as it should and simply went back to disabling autobrightness
all together.

That is exactly what auto brightness is supposed to do, but at some point Apple
did make it so that when screencurtain was turned on brightness would get set
to 0% regardless whether auto brightness was turned on or not. This makes
complete sense, Apple has full control over their hardware and software and
obviously if somebody turns on screencurtain they couldn't care less if
brightness was kept up at 30% or whatever, it only uses more battery and just
as certain behaviours are triggered when Voiceover is turned on I am sure Apple
can trigger certain behaviours when screen curtain is turned on such as setting
brightness to 0% and overwriting the auto brightness setting.
If of course this doesn't work as it should then Apple needs to figure out why.

Sieghard

Hi Chris,
It seems to me that if you have auto brightness turned on, it’s not going to
stay at zero, because the whole point of auto brightness is to adjust the
brightness depending on the surrounding like conditions. At least, that’s my
understanding. I always have it off, and I turn it up if I need sighted
assistance with something.

Is she using a Mac? I have not heard of doing that on an iPhone or iPad. I do
not have a Mac, but on an iPhone or iPad, I just double tap on the attachment
and it will download the file, double tap again and it will be in viewing mode,
at which point a two finger flick down will read it through unless there are
some odd codes that stop it reading.
Then I flick right with one finger, and then down with two and it will pick up

Hi Ed,
I would still rather have the home button. But Apple doesn’t see it that way.
So, I feel very fortunate that the Face ID with the attention mode enabled is
working for me. That doesn’t negate my concerns about it for those for whom it
does not work at all or very well. And I have seen blind people having
problems. Or I should say, I have heard of. People who are having problems with
it. If you think that is talking out of both sides of my mouth, well I think
that is a problem with your perceptions.

Mary, I also have heard from people who can't get Touch Id to work for the life

Hi Ed,
I would still rather have the home button.

Hello Mary,

I do the same as you, but a few people had their screen curtain on, and this
seem to keep their brightness at zero for them. So I gave it a try, and as I
previously stated, it did not work out for me.

brightness resets to zero or as low as it can go.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I have rebooted the phone

I have spent some time researching Google but, aside from one or two

I don't remember this being a problem before the iOS 12.01 update.

2018-10-29 Thread Mary Otten
No, I don’t listen to the podcast you mentioned. I suppose I would expect a
podcast dedicated to one operating system or another to have a bias in favor of
the operating system, although I would hope that the folks who make the podcast
would be able to be critical of their favorite when criticism is deserved. My
problem with so-called mainstream business publications who are particularly
one-sided in their coverage is that they are supposed to be mainstream, not a
fan boy or girl.

RE: Screen Brightness Annoyance When Rebooting iPhone 8 Plus

2018-10-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Re: Apple iOS 12.1 Release Has A Nasty Surprise, Forbes

2018-10-29 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Ed,
I would still rather have the home button.

Even though you said you are not favorable to Overcast, I think it has probably
the most shortcuts available. On top of being able to play the most current
episode of any of the podcast you are subscribed too, you also have shortcuts
for play, pause, rewinding, fast forwarding, plus many of the Overcast settings.
I have tried many of the podcast apps out there over the years, and Overcast is
my favorite and what I use now, but in the end, it is a personal preference.

Hello,

Yes you can set up the assistive touch option and have menu
options. This will show up as a small dot on the screen that you can actually
set to utilize the home gesture, app switcher, Notification Center and control
center. It’s not ideal but it could work as a work around in noisy situations.

Please let me know if you need or want any further assistance

I think Mary sometimes does what we all do, we comment on something without
having first hand knowledge or experience and later on when we do have such
first hand knowledge or experience we suddenly realize that what we said was

Everyone knows that android takes a bit longer to get updates.
Considering the fact that there are many different makers of devices

be ok with just audio calls.

Hi Mary,
I remember back a few months ago you were complaining about not having a home
button on the new iPhones. Also you complained adamantly about the face ID on
numerous emails. Then today or yesterday you said the face ID was working very
well on your new iPhone. You seem to talk out of both sides of your mouth. LOL

Mary,

New versions of iOS often did not offer the full feature set to older devices
and in some cases if hardware constraints make this impossible then that is
just how it is. If Apple decides to do this deliberately then it's a different
story, but if that is what they do then that is what they do. It is their
hardware and while you bought it it's definitely their software which they make
available for free and under their license terms so they can do what they want.

Yes. Sure. So it’s OK for phones to be issued now that have last year‘s
operating system and that’s no big deal. But it’s a problem when Apple’s newest
operating system doesn’t have every feature available to older phones. Right.

I repeated it and SIRI said “Oh, Oh” just as if she was about to say

I should add to this that I am running the public beta of iOS 12.1

That would be one feature I don’t think I would ever use and one I had never
even thought about.

If I have to push and hold the home button and then say “SIRI, answer the call”
or evenjust “Answer” I might as well just double tap with 2 finger to answer
and if I wear a headset I already have a button I can press to answer.

I guess the only exception to this would be if it worked just on device without
interaction similar to how it is with a number of Plantronics headsets where
when the phone rings you can simply say “Answer”. This would mean as soon as
the phone rings SIRI would need to be listening for the word “Answer” or
“Ignore”.

If I am doing something like cooking where I may have dirty hands I can always
turn on auto answer. Yesterday we had a nice sunny day and I wanted to get my
Christmas lights up on a 25 foot tall spruce tree in my front yard before it
was full of snow which at this time of the year can happen any time. I left my
staff at my store since it wasn’t so busy and went home, but while I was up on
the ladder I knew I might not be able to or want to answer a call so I put in
my headset and set the phone to auto answer after 5 seconds.

Re: Screen Brightness Annoyance When Rebooting iPhone 8 Plus

Hi Chris,
It seems to me that if you have auto brightness turned on, it’s not going to
stay at zero, because the whole point of auto brightness is to adjust the
brightness depending on the surrounding like conditions. At least, that’s my
understanding. I always have it off, and I turn it up if I need sighted
assistance with something.

Hi Lee,
There is an app called myTuner. There is also a myTuner Pro, which is the one I

that station, you can then easily make a Siri shortcut wear from the main
screen, you can just say your shortcut word or phrase, and myTuner opens to
that station and starts playing it.

support for siri shortcuts. Can be free or one time purchase. Any ideas?

Re: Podcast Apps

2018-10-29 Thread Chris Chaffin

Even though you said you are not favorable to Overcast, I think it has probably
the most shortcuts available. On top of being able to play the most current
episode of any of the podcast you are subscribed too, you also have shortcuts
for play, pause, rewinding, fast forwarding, plus many of the Overcast settings.
I have tried many of the podcast apps out there over the years, and Overcast is
my favorite and what I use now, but in the end, it is a personal preference.

Dear List, I wondered what podcast apps people would recommend that are both
accessible, and have good support for siri shortcuts. I bought downcast years

Re: Screen Brightness Annoyance When Rebooting iPhone 8 Plus

2018-10-29 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hello Mark,

I am running the latest ios on an iPhone 8, and I have seen many brightness
issues ever since I have updated to ios 12. And I have tested it, it does not
matter whether screen curtain is on or off.
Here is what I have seen:

* Ever time I restart my phone, and I just tested this again, my phone
brightness is set to 100%. And this happens whether screen curtain is on or
off and if auto brightness is on or off.
* If I have auto brightness on, my brightness will increase from time to time,
even if I have screen curtain on. For example, I would turn it down to 0, and
check later on, sometimes it would still be at 0, and sometimes I found it at
35%. If I turned it back down to 0, things would just repeat itself after some
time. So I was forced to turn auto brightness off.

I understand that not everybody and all phones see this behavior, but it is
happening. I do not understand why, and even though I would guess that Apple
would have a hard time reproducing it, I have submitted the problem to them in
hopes that it might be resolved in a future update.

RE: invision ai

2018-10-29 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello Michell,

Envision AI works fine here on my iPhone7.

You could try removing the app then restarting your phone. Now reinstall the
app. Does it work now?

If you still experience problems you may like to e-mail:

kart...@letsenvision.com

They generally respond quickly and are most helpful.

I hope you get your issue resolved as in my experience Envision AI is an
outstanding app.

And why Apple doesn’t allow people to tell SIRI “Turn off my phone” and then
that would bring up the power off screen is beyond me.

I was just going to go on and rant some more because it used to be that when I
said “Open General Settings” SIRI would say something like “Sorry Sieghard, I
can’t do that”.

Of course I can say Accessibility Settings, Voiceover Settings, Sound Settings,
WiFi Settings, SIRI Settings and all sorts of other things, but General
Settings never used to work.

Now I thought before I send this message I better try it to write down what
SIRI says and to my surprise now General Settings opens although interestingly
enough SIRI still started saying “Sorry Sieghard” and then it stopped and
Settings > General opened.

I repeated it and SIRI said “Oh, Oh” just as if she was about to say “Oh Oh, I
can’t do that” but then again General Settings opened.

I should add to this that I am running the public beta of iOS 12.1 which will
probably be out in a week or so, I would be curious to hear what others
experience when they say “General Settings” or “Open General Settings”.

Sieghard

You can also go to settings > general and at the way bottom of the screen you
can find a shut down button. that will bring up the power off screen.

I've also heard that if you press and hold one of the volume buttons and the

The technician did not want to waste too much time. She gave me a new phone.

Re: Missing Voice Dream Shortcuts

2018-10-29 Thread Chris Chaffin

Now for me, Voice Dream did not show up in Siri Settings until I opened up the
Voice Dream app. But from what you have said, you have done this, and like
Richard, I would not think this is a country specific feature.
Just to make sure you are looking in the right place, once you go to Siri
Settings, double tap on All Shortcuts, they are listed alphabetically, so Voice
Dream will be near the end of the list.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Re: VO Continuous Reading of PDF

2018-10-29 Thread Richard Turner
Is she using a Mac? I have not heard of doing that on an iPhone or iPad. I do
not have a Mac, but on an iPhone or iPad, I just double tap on the attachment
and it will download the file, double tap again and it will be in viewing mode,
at which point a two finger flick down will read it through unless there are
some odd codes that stop it reading.
Then I flick right with one finger, and then down with two and it will pick up
reading again.

Any suggestions?

Re: Missing Voice Dream Shortcuts

2018-10-29 Thread Richard Turner

If you went into Settings, Siri and Search, then All Shortcuts and there were
none shown for Voice Dream, then either Siri Shortcuts are not available in the
UK for this, which would seem really odd, or you are not using the most recent
Voice Dream update that includes them, or something very strange is happening.
What version of Voice Dream are you running?

Re: question

2018-10-29 Thread Thom Spittle
If you navigate to the field for who you wanted to send it to, start typing in
the person’s name, usually just two or three letters should do. Then, swipe to
the right and people that fit that criteria will show up so you may have to
swipe to the right if you times depending on how many search results you have.
Then just double tap on the name.

Missing Voice Dream Shortcuts

2018-10-29 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List, I listened to a podcast where someone was adding shortcuts to siri
for voice dream reader in all shortcuts in settings. When I go into voice
dream in siri settings there are no shortcuts to add, even though it says that
shortcuts are turned on for the app. There are other apps which don’t seem to
have the shortcuts that they should. Does anyone have an idea what is going on
here. Might there be some kine of regional issue, I live in the UK. I thought
that voice dream was the same all over the world.

Many Thanks, Lee
