Re: iCloud Backup

2019-10-16 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

You don't have to turn off automatic backups to do one yourself. Choose the
Apple ID button at the top of Settings, then iCloud, then Backup. You can do a
backup from that screen at any time as well as turn automatic backups on or off.

Best,
Anna

Re: iCloud Backup

2019-10-16 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,

Go to your device settings, Apple ID, iCloud, iCloud back up on and double tap
it and there you have the option to activate the back up button to do a manual
back up or to enable or disable automatic back up.

Hi,

The phone doesn't have to be locked to do a manual backup. It's just that
automatic backups only happen when it's locked.

Hi Keith,

Open Settings in Voice Dream Reader, and go to Cloud Sync. Make sure "Sync
library using iCloud" is on. If it is, your books will be backed up to iCloud
and restored if you restore your iPhone.

I have subscribe to the 50 GB iCloud thing, but I also have a Mac. So I’m not
sure. It’s not really clear to me if you had a successful iCloud back up of
your device, but the Voice Dream Lee reader library messed up with that
sinking, how would you get that back on your phone? In other words, I just
don’t know that having enough iCloud space is sufficient to guarantee that
you’re going to get a good restoration if you got a new phone for instance.

RE: iCloud backup versus encrypted iTunes backup

2018-09-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Kimber,

I still have a Mobile Applications folder on my computer which I can access
with Windows Explorer but the latest date of any of the apps in it is October
of 2017. Also, any apps I've installed since iTunes stopped supporting local
backups aren't there.

Admittedly, I haven't done an encrypted backup in a while. What do you mean by
you can no longer backup apps to your local computer? Does that mean the mobile
apps folder is no longer present in windows explorer?

I used to back up my apps folder before doing major apps updates just in case
some of my favorite apps got broken. What a shame if that is no longer possible.

Re: iCloud backup versus encrypted iTunes backup

2018-09-05 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Alan and all,

How interesting that apps were loaded from your iTunes backup. When my daughter
restored from an iTunes backup a year ago, all her apps were loaded from the
cloud. That's why I thought they were always loaded from the cloud regardless
of which kind of backup you do. I wish Apple would explain what's going on so
we didn't have to guess!

RE: iCloud backup versus encrypted iTunes backup

2018-09-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Arnold,

I'm running iTunes 12.8.0.16 and also expected the latest version of my apps to
be downloaded from the cloud when I restored my iTunes encrypted backup to my
new iPhone 8. However, this isn't what happened. Even though you're ight that
iTunes no longer lets you backup apps to your local computer, I somehow ended
up with the same versions of my apps on my iPhone 8 that I had running on my
iPhone 7. I'm sure of this because when I went into updates on the Apps Store,
I still had over 70 apps listed there with newer versions. If all of my apps
had been downloaded with their most current versions, nothing should have shown
on the Apps Store update screen except apss that had a new release uploaded
very recently.

I was glad I had my iTunes backup because I initially selected restore from the
cloud backup as it didn't give me any other options except for setting it up as
a brand new phone and I knew I didn't want that. During the cloud restore, I
started getting prompts that the iPhone wanted the password for an Apple ID
that I did not recognize and was not my email address. When this started
happening, I launched iTunes and restored my encrypted backup which ran
overnight and returned everything to what I expected. Well, I had one app that
was no longer available in the Apps Store so that was not restored. So, I'm
confused how and where the apps are obtained when doing a restore from an
encrypted backup. My experience seems to say they come from the cloud but if
the apps are still available, you get whatever version you were running when
you backed up your device.

I will be delighted if I am wrong about this, but starting with ITunes 12.7,
apps no longer are backed up to an encrypted backup. When one restores the
device, the latest version of the app is restored to the device. Also,
remember that if you have spent any time arranging your home screens the way
you want them, or making folders for apps, I think all that will be gone and
the apps will appear in alphabetical order. I do not know if the customized
screens will be restored from an encrypted backup or not, I do not think they
are restored from an ICloud backup. They use to be restored from an encrypted
backup.

Hi Arnold and all,

Home screen arrangements are restored with either type of backup. BARD books
are not saved in either kind of backup. The latest version of apps is copied to
your device whether you use an iCloud or iTunes backup.

Re: iCloud backup versus encrypted iTunes backup

2018-09-05 Thread Arnold Schmidt
As I said in another message, I will be delighted if I am wrong about the
following. If one has any books saved in Kindle or Bard, they will not restore
from iClouth and will have to be downloaded again, they will be restored from
an encrypted backup. Also, any books in Voice Dream will not restore from
ICloud, unless the iCloud storage feature in Voice Dream is enabled first. I
hope Winston has gotten that feature to be more reliable now than it once was,
I have read many threads about how people's libraries got all messed up by it.
Again, it very well may be all right now. Any other books, such as those in
Learning Ally will not restore from iCloud, but should from an encrypted
backup. Finally, I know that music is not backed up in ICloud. Your music
library from Apple Music is there, but not any downloads. Any music on your
device from cd's on your hard drive that were on the device will not be
restored in an ICloud backup. If none of these things matter, then an ICloud
backup is fine. An ICloud backup surely is better than nothing, if something
goes wrong with your device when you are not near your home computer and you
have to restore it.

Hi Keith,

Both types of backups back up all of the same information. If you restore from
a backup, even iTunes backups download your apps from the app store if you
restore from them, so there isn't a speed advantage in restoring from iTunes
either. I would suggest backing up with icloud on a regular basis and doing an
encrypted iTunes backup before you get a new device so that if you have to
restore from the backup, the iTunes one is available in case something is wrong
with the iCloud one.

Re: iCloud backup versus encrypted iTunes backup

2018-09-05 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I will be delighted if I am wrong about this, but starting with ITunes 12.7,
apps no longer are backed up to an encrypted backup. When one restores the
device, the latest version of the app is restored to the device. Also,
remember that if you have spent any time arranging your home screens the way
you want them, or making folders for apps, I think all that will be gone and
the apps will appear in alphabetical order. I do not know if the customized
screens will be restored from an encrypted backup or not, I do not think they
are restored from an ICloud backup. They use to be restored from an encrypted
backup.

Re: iCloud backup

2015-11-19 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Even if you aren't using iCloud backup, you may be using iCloud to sync
contacts, icloud.com email messages, Pages documents, and
similar data. If so, that data would explain the numbers you are seeing.

It sounds like you have two options : buy more iCloud storage (you can get 50
GB for $1 per month, or more for more money), or turn off iCloud backup and
back up to your computer. If you turn iCloud backup off, your phone will back
up to your computer automatically every time you connect it.

Best,
Anna

Re: iCloud backup

2015-09-23 Thread Wayne Merritt
I believe you can go into Settings/Messages, and choose to have
messsages kept for certain lengths of time, such as a week, a month,
or forever. I have changed this to forever, since there are some work
related messages that I need access to. I made the change several
years ago and whenever I have updated my iPhone or gotten a new phone
and restored from iCloud, all of my messages have been there. So far
this hasn't blown up my iCloud storage since I still have over half of
the free 5 gigs available. I backup many other things to iCloud too,
so it's not all saved messages.

By default, all apps will back up to iCloud, as far as I know. The ones I
turn off are the ones that save *all* of their content online anyway.
Instapaper or Pocket, for instance, will pull all your articles, folders, and
so on from the internet once you log in, so there's no sense backing them up.
Same for Facebook, Messenger, Rooms, Twitter, Dice World, Skype, and others. Of
course, I did all this back in the caveman days of early 2015, way back when I
only had 5GB of iCloud space. Now that I'm paying a buck a month for 50GB, I
don't bother and let iCloud back up whatever it wants to.

I guess the GPS apps that save POIs may be included ... or maybe not ...

Anyway, if anyone uses ones that definitely backup to iCloud, I'd like to

RE: iCloud backup

2015-09-22 Thread Chris Smart

Follow-up question:
If one just backs up to the cloud regularly, not backing up using iTunes,
and needs to restore the phone at some future time, will they have to
manually download each app again from the App Store, then restore from
the last iCloud back up? Or, is iCloud smart enough to also get the App
store to redownload all apps?

Another question springs from that one: Which apps should we check to enable
iCloud backup?

If in doubt I check mine, but am not always sure which to go for.

I guess the GPS apps that save POIs may be included ... or maybe not ...

Anyway, if anyone uses ones that definitely backup to iCloud, I'd like to know.

Re: iCloud backup

2015-09-22 Thread Alex Hall
By default, all apps will back up to iCloud, as far as I know. The ones I turn
off are the ones that save *all* of their content online anyway. Instapaper or
Pocket, for instance, will pull all your articles, folders, and so on from the
internet once you log in, so there's no sense backing them up. Same for
Facebook, Messenger, Rooms, Twitter, Dice World, Skype, and others. Of course,
I did all this back in the caveman days of early 2015, way back when I only had
5GB of iCloud space. Now that I'm paying a buck a month for 50GB, I don't
bother and let iCloud back up whatever it wants to.

Re: iCloud backup?

2015-09-18 Thread 'carol.pearso...@googlemail.com' via VIPhone
I had the same problem and think mine may have started before the upgrade as
my iCloud backup kept disappearing from availability, or showing at all.

I could only think that I'd reset my WiFi connections but hadn't got round
to re-writing my original phone name back into the About section. This
brought about some interesting times ... I've now put the name back,
hopefully exactly as it was before, and note that a backup too iCloud took
place this morning.

If anyone can confirm I've done the right thing and explain the consequences
of not doing so, this would be useful information.

Thanks.

I don't know if this sorts your problem, but perhaps it might. I hope,
anyway, that you find a solution.

Bizarre! Just now I noticed that the amount of iCloud storage i have used
had suddenly dropped massively. I checked on my iPhone 5s and on my iPad Air
and in settings, even though iCloud backup is turned on, each device claimed
it had not been backed up for months - but I know this is untrue. My partner
checked her iPhone 6 Plus and her iPad Air and she had exactly the same
issue - her iPad even claimed it had never been backed up - which we both
know is untrue. Anyone else noticing this? Could it be caused by Apple
increasing our iCloud storage quota to 50GB and in the process wiping out
existing backups? Or iOS 9?

Thanks
Harry

RE: iCloud backup

2015-09-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apps are not actually backed up when you do an iTunes backup and neither is
music. Those are synced and the information as to which apps you have on your
phone and where they are in terms of homescreen position or location in folders
and so on is part of the backup. If you have to do a restore and you have
synced with iTunes and done a backup, then the apps are synced back to your
phone from iTunes. If you back up to iCloud the same is true except that
instead of your apps syncing from iTunes they are redownloaded from the app
store.

Sieghard

Re: iCloud backup?

2015-09-18 Thread Wayne Merritt
I noticed this as well on my iPhone 6 the night that I updated. I
wonder if it showed that message because for as long as the
phone/device has had iOS 9, it has not been backed up. That's my
working theory but I don't exactly know why it reports that. I just
looked in my iCloud settings, and even though my iPhone probably
backed up last night, it said "unknown" under last backup. Weird.

Good luck,

Re: iCloud backup question

2014-06-08 Thread Alex Hall
If you really don't want app data backed up, than go ahead and turn it off.
That means that, were you to restore an iCloud backup, you wouldn't get any of
your apps - books and files in Voice Dream, locally stored documents in a word
processor, and so on. Some apps now store your information and sync via iCloud
anyway, but any that don't will not be restored.

That said, it's odd that you only have a toggle. As I said, I have a button,
which lets me select which apps I don't want backed up. Turning off the big
ones, like Bard Mobile, saves a lot of space in my backup. Anyone else unable

Re: iCloud backup question

2014-06-07 Thread Alex Hall
You can just turn off certain apps. Go to your iCloud settings, then Storage
and Backup, then Manage Backups. Double tap the name of the device to manage,
and turn off any apps you don't want stored in iCloud. You can save a lot of
space this way, with apps that either rely on other storage (like Dropbox) or
apps whose data you don't care about.

RE: iCloud backup question

2014-06-07 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Thanks.

I get to Documents and Data. I switch from On to Off, and it says, All
Documents and Data stored in iCloud will be deleted from this iPhone.

I have nothing in iCloud yet. I'm guessing that I'm safe to keep Documents and
Data switched off, since there's nothing there currently.

I guess I just need to double-check that nothing currently on my iPhone will be
lost when this is checked.

Is that correct?

Thanks. Keith

Re: iCloud backup question

2014-06-07 Thread Alex Hall
No, leave that on. It should be a button; double tapping it should open a
screen where you can control exactly which apps get backed up, it should not be
a toggle. Yes, there is a toggle inside the Documents and Data screen, but the
button from the main iCloud settings screen should not be a toggle. Are you on
iOS7?
