Yes. One of the things I wish would be included in Google Voice is to set a
schedule for do not disturb. I could have swarn that this was possible a few
years ago, but I’ve poked around settings on the webpage and apps and it seems
that you can only toggle on and off.

Hello all,

Can any of you who have updated to the latest version of the Google Voice app
please let me know if it is still possible to toggle do not disturb on and off.
When I updated the android version of that app that feature seems to of
disappeared and I don't want to lose it hence the reason I have not updated the
iOS app. Thanks in advance.

What I can tell you is that, currently, even for those of us with some residual

Without getting into the histrionics, Google Voice is slowly being phased out
as we know it, in favor of hardware solutions such as Android devices and
software alternatives such as Google Hangouts.

This may sound crazy but, when one browses to Voice.google.com

that has been dialed before. This is from the official Google help page. Is
that not crazy? Of course, there are several workarounds the easiest being to
bring up Legacy mode. Doing this will bring up a browser window that present
Google Voice in the classic view that we have all come to know and love.

Again, I have not tested the official Google app on iOS in some years but find
it difficult to believe that it is not VoiceOver accessible; however, I'll take
your word for it.

Bottom line, at present, I prefer using Google voice on my Samsung Galaxy S6
where the interface is seamless. When that is not convenient, I simply browse
to voice.google.com <http://voice.google.com/> and from the site's menu
option, select Legacy Mode.

While I realize that I have not provided any answers, I hope you will feel

hi Mark,
hangouts is certainly accessible. I use it for just over a year, and
like it. it is better in terms of layout on android, but that is not an
accessibility point, it's a personal view.

Hello Jennifer,

It's good to learn that the Hangouts app for iOS is VoiceOver accessible.

I'll be honest, I only explored Hangouts when it was first launched and found
it extremely confusing, for some reason. That was several years ago.

I remember that when I set it up, it messed up my settings that I had
configured on the web so I deleted it.

Now that the web version of both Hangouts and Google Voice are less strait
forward, perhaps I'll give it another shot.

Thanks for confirming it's VoiceOver accessibility,

Mark

I think the original question here was about setting up the account
itself. As I recall, you can't do that from within the app, it has to
be done on a PC. That was years ago and I remember that it was a bit
tricky but worked best with NVDA. As for using the number, the Google
Voice and Hangouts apps are both accessible enough for this. But
creating the account was challenging at that time, I can't comment on
doing it now.

The Google Voice app is in fact quite accessible. Been using it for years.
They even put out a major update a few weeks ago enhancing features. GVConnect
is also good and I’ve even used Google Voice through the hangOuts app.

For the web, hangouts.google.com is where you can go to interact with texts and
 whatnot.

Generally though, I find Google Voice to work better with Firefox. Although,
making calls is better with IE as there’s an issue with the timer constantly
being updated and spoken by Jaws if you’re a Jaws user with Windows.

I use GV for my business and personal use.

RE: google voice

2017-02-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Thomas,

So, are you saying that both the iOS versions of both the official Google Voice
and Hangouts apps are, indeed, VoiceOver accessible? Interesting.

Also, do you use both the apps? If so, in what way do they differ?

As for Google phasing out the classic view/use of Google Voice: I am the one
who posted this to the list.

Without going into great detail, my Google Voice account has been updated to
the latest web UI, no doubt because I updated to the latest version of Google
Voice on my Android phone.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this update has greatly changed some basic
features now available in the web UI. Because I use the web version of GV on a
daily basis, I was extremely frustrated in the dramatic change and, as a
result, contacted Google as well as reading seemingly endless amounts of white
papers that Google has posted to the web regarding the latest changes to Google
Voice. Somewhere, and I cannot recall the location, they clearly stated that
they were phasing out the classic Google Voice UI in favor of a more, modern,
consistent user experience reflecting, or attempting to more precisely reflect,
the Android experience across multiple platforms.

I did not write that they were phasing out Google Voice, as a service, but
merely the classic web interface.

accessible to use. So, I am a bit confused why a person has mentioned it was
not very accessible to use. I am curious in what you have seen that is not
accessible?

Yes, I also use Hangout in conjunction with Google Voice. They work together
great as mentioned in the last comment. Placing a phone call from Hang Out is
easy and I also receive text message via Hangout as well.

Somebody mentioned that Google Voice was being phased out? I had not heard
about this and would like to know more about this as I use Google Voice quite a
bit. That would be a real shame if that is true. I thought I heard that it was
the other way around. For some reason, I thought I heard that Hangout was being
phased out and that they have stop 3rd party of being able to use the Hangout
API's. They were going with a new direction. So, any information about Google
Voice being phased out would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Thomas

Hello Cliff and thank you for this information.

I had completely forgotten about the GV Connect app, for iOS. I am glad to
learn that it is VoiceOver accessible.

As for the official Google Voice app, I strongly suggest that you and others
write a review in the App Store requesting better VoiceOver accessibility.

Be sure to paste in the text of your review, here, and request that others
support your efforts.

I also suggest that you contact Google on Twitter via their handle which is
@Google.

I to have been using google voice for some time now. The official google voice
app is not accessible, but an app called “GV connect” is very accessible. You
can make calls, send and receive texts, you can even look at your outgoing and
incoming call history. That being said, I just went to google.com/voice on my
Mac and PC, and both platforms allowed me to sign up for a new GV number.
Aside from that, I don’t use the web for anything else because the GV connect
app I mentioned above does everything else. On a side note, when ever you text
someone from the GV connect app, it will show up in that app, and will also
show up in your messages app. Now when it shows up in your messages app, it
will sign a random number to it that you have never seen before, but will be
followed by the persons original number. I use that number to my advantage,
locking it under that persons contact as a GV number, so when I call or text
them, my google voice number is the one that shows up. HTH.

Hi Maria, I don't believe this feature is clearly all available yet. Which
means, if you won't line you want to find somebody with a regular computer, and
they will need to sign your Gmail account and the creation process is very
easy. Dennet is on IOS through a web browser. So far to make mine. On my Mac.

Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a Google voice phone number for my business. My
question is, I know that I can sit personalize greetings for contacts, but,
how do I set an outgoing message that collars or not in my contact list will
receive? I want to make sure the incoming clients receive the outgoing
business message.

Thank you, and I hope this question makes sense Beth

they are disabling the XMPP usage by third party apps because they are going to
the Google Hangouts platform I believe. So, if the third-party app uses XMPP,
then yes, it will stop working in May 2014. For example, people like you and me
who have an unlocked phone bridge from Obihai, called the Obi Talk, and use it
as a home phone service with Google Voice, will need to find a different
solution very soon. I believe that apps like Talkatone which use Google Talk to
make and receive Google Voice calls will also stop working. Apps like GV
Connect which use Talkatone as a backbone to make data only calls via Google
Voice will also stop working. I can only hope that the texting service that GV
Connect uses to get the messages to and from Google Voice isn't using XMPP.
Otherwise, it too will stop working. I asked the GV Connect developer about
this and he seems to be confident that it will continue to work, minus the
Talkatone access of course.

RE: Google Voice And 3rd Party Apps

2014-03-18 Thread Cristóbal
I saw a couple of postings earlier this morning about Google's plans to kill
off Voice and incorperate its features into hangouts.
http://9to5google.com/2014/03/18/google-plans-kill-google-voice-in-months-integrate-features-into-hangouts/
I suppose it was kind of expected the way Hangouts was being more and more
emphasized and GV features being gradually added to hangouts. One can only hope
that however it gets sorted out that the Hangouts iOS app becomes accessible.
The latest hangouts update made what little accessibility there was disappear.

I guess we can only wait and see to what Google finally does and what the
finished Voice integration into hangouts looks like. That and reach out to
Google to request that whatever solution they finally come up with has
accessibility out of the gate.

Re: Google Voice And 3rd Party Apps

2014-03-17 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, just to be clear, it's not that Google Voice is disabling third
party apps, they are disabling the XMPP usage by third party apps
because they are going to the Google Hangouts platform I believe. So, if
the third-party app uses XMPP, then yes, it will stop working in May
2014. For example, people like you and me who have an unlocked phone
bridge from Obihai, called the Obi Talk, and use it as a home phone
service with Google Voice, will need to find a different solution very
soon. I believe that apps like Talkatone which use Google Talk to make
and receive Google Voice calls will also stop working. Apps like GV
Connect which use Talkatone as a backbone to make data only calls via
Google Voice will also stop working. I can only hope that the texting
service that GV Connect uses to get the messages to and from Google
Voice isn't using XMPP. Otherwise, it too will stop working. I asked the
GV Connect developer about this and he seems to be confident that it
will continue to work, minus the Talkatone access of course.

Thanks so much for the details. I guess I will have to find something else
soon as I use the Talkatone app and the OBI100 device. Plenty of texting
apps out there, but I haven't found any that will allow you to call out for
free. Some allow you to receive calls for FREE, but not call out. Anyone
know of any free apps that will allow a person to make phone calls, or at
least any that won't drain the bank account? Anyone had luck with the Majic

Subject: Google Voice and jailbreaking - Was Re: iOS7 Jailbreak Released

Hello Melissa and all interested. Basically it's like this, you can set up a
free Google Voice number at http://voice.google.com and forward it to your
iPhone number, or any other number by choice. In my case, my real cell
iPhone number is the primary number it forwards to. This means that when
people call my GV number, it rings my cell phone. If I want to call that
person back, or make outgoing calls which appear from my GV number rather
than my real cell number, I have to either use a direct dial method or call
back method via the Google Voice App or my favorite, GV Connect. Normally
that is fine, and in most cases no problem. However if I am texting with
someone, or if I see a number on a web page or if someone puts their number
in an email, I can't just simply tap the number and call it and it come from
my GV number. This is where jailbreaking and the Call on GV Pro and SMS on
GV tweaks come into play.
With Call on GV Pro, it fully integrates my GV number into the iPhone so
that outgoing calls can be from my GV number. You choose the method of
dialing out so you always use GV, or the tweak asks you if you want to
choose carrier calls. It's completely flexible. Now for texting, when you
have a GV number, it can be used to send texts back and forth with it.
Normal SMS can be sent, but not MMS, which is used for pictures, videos, and
audio. Again, if I want to text back and forth to and from my GV number and
all outgoing texts need to show my GV number to hide my real cell number, I
have to either use Google Voice app, or GV Connect.
Another way is you can have Google forward all texts to your real cell and
they are assigned a gateway number which is associated with that contact.
This is very good the way it works, but let's say that someone with number
832-555-1234 writes me. I'll see an incoming text which shows 504-221-1922
and then the text shows 832-555-1234 followed by the text. As long as I
respond to that 504 number, it will automatically forward to the real 832
number which wrote me. Again, not a big deal if I add that 504 into my
contacts. I can even call it like normal, and the call will originate from
my GV number. However again, if you want to initiate a text message, you
have to use a Google Voice or GV Connect app. So, here comes jailbreaking
and SMS on GV. It fully integrates the sms experience with my iPhone and so
all I have to do is text someone like normal to their regular number and the
incoming text they will see will be from my gv number. This also has the
advantage that if another app sends out a text on your behalf, like sharing
information, it will originate from your GV number.

I hope this helps, and if I can explains things further, please write me off
list.

PS, a while back I wrote up a setup article on how to do all what I
describe. The article is a bit outdated now since it was for iOS 5 I
believe, but much of the same information applies. If I get requests off
list, I can send that article to people. Again, off list for this.

Hi, can't speak for Ben, but below are some of the reasons why
jailbreaking
isn't quite as sexy as it used to be for me. Other than the Google Voice
integration, which is still the primary reason for me to do it, the
reasons
 below no longer seem important.

iOS added the control center. Much of this functionality used to be done
with SBSettings, now the Control Center takes care of that.

iOS added the ability to block callers via messages, phone, or Facetime.
Previously you had to use a jailbreak tweak to get this functionality.

iOS added ability for more than 12 apps per folder. Again, jailbreak
tweaks
 were needed to get this.

Do you see the pattern? Apple might openly say that jailbreaking is akin

to be a little more conscious of my minutes and data usage. As far as I can
tell, it is no longer possible for me to use the integrated Google Voice

Voice.google.com and set it up there. I don't recall the exact set up, but
you may need sighte help to get past the captcha. Someone else could correct

Google vvoice numbers are great. I have a total of three. Two business and

The official Google voice iOS app is accessible and other third party apps
for now such as Talkatone and GVConnect work well with Voiceover.

Hi again.

Usually I can figure these things out, but I went to
http://www.google.com/voice and can't find how to get to the setting
menu and change things using Jaws 14 and Internet explorer 10 in windows 8.

Any tips?

Thanks.

Re: google voice on the I Phone

2013-03-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure I'm going to be of much help. I tried doing this with Orca
and Firefox, and I couldn't get into the right tab. Using Chrome and
ChromeVox, I was able to do it however. I went to voice.google.com,
which should be the same page you got to. There's a settings pull down
right above your list of calls. The first option here is these
Settings. If you can click on that, a series of tabs will show up a few
lines below that pull down. The third tab over is Call and the option
you want in the call tab is call screening. Turn this off, and you'll be
good to go. Like I said, I'm not sure how to get there with your Windows
browsers and screen readers, although Chrome and ChromeVox will work in
Windows, but that's probably overkill for this one task. Maybe another
Windows user can help out here.

Re: google voice on the I Phone

2013-03-26 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
I do not know if this will help you right now, but I am in the process of
recording how to change settings for Google voice using their website.
Essentially you have to go into the settings and then the call tab. There is a
setting called screen calls. You need to turn that off. I can give you some
tips with window eyes however. Turn off auto load with insert plus a. Then turn
browse mode off. Then tab until you get to the settings pulldown. Press space
to activate. Then press down arrow until it says settings. Now press enter and
the settings section will load. The first section is the phones section. You
will have to use the mouse pointer to click the one to the right of it for
calls. There are a couple of radio buttons to screen the calls and the default
is on. Set it to off and then press enter on save. Note that you can also do
this from an iPhone app called GV connect. This app is $2.99 but is far better
than the free Google voice app for the iPhone. In the settings for this app you
can also turn on and off the call screening feature.

Hi there. That is the call monitoring feature. It is enabled by default, but
depending on your situation some people turn it off. For example, the Google
voice number that I use as a home phone has that feature turned off. This
way when people call the house, the phones ringing like normal and people
answer like normal. When this feature is enabled, people who are not in your
Google contact list will be prompted to speak their name. When your phone
rings, you will then be given the chance to take the call by pressing one,
or sending the call to Boyceville by pressing too. Some people find this
okay while others do not like it.

Another feature I like about Google voice is that it will perform voice
recognition on any messages left in your voice mail and send you a text
or email with the transcription in it. It isn't perfect, but it's a
quick way to let you know if you need to worry about the message or not.

As others have mentioned, when someone calls my Google Voice number, my
cell phone, land line and office phones will all ring. I can decide
which phone I want to use to take the call.

I don't use these features myself, but you can decide if you'll answer a
call or send it to voice mail. You can even listen to someone leaving
the voice mail and decide to pick it up. You can also pick up the call
on one phone, say your land line phone, and then pick it up on your cell
phone as well, such as if you're going out the door during the call.

message, the messages are On the Google voice website and are virtually
stored forever. Or at least as long as you want them to. In any case, a
lot longer and easier to manage than the messages app on the phone.
Another advantage is that if you get an incoming call through your Google
voice number, you can record the phone call. This will play a message
that all parties will here so they know they are being recorded. This
comes in handy and of course you can later retrieve it from the Google
voice web
site. There are many more advantages and I could go on forever and ever
since I am a huge fan of Google voice. However I will mention one last
advantage and say no more unless others are interested. I have an ObiTalk
Phone bridge adapter. With this adapter I can make it so it uses Google
voice as it's line. That means that my home phone is actually a Google
voice number and I don't have to pay for home phone service. As long as I
have this adapter connected to the Internet and configured, then I get
free phone service.

Before I got rid of Google voice, it did work that way. If you blocked that
number their calls automatically heard the old the number you have reached
is no longer in service thing. The caller never knew they had been blocked.
When a call did come in you could either answer it or wait. If you waited,
the call would switch over to voice mail. In settings, you could set how
long it rang before going to voice mail. If the caller left a voice
message, you were sent an email informing you of new voice mail.

I got an email from Google informing me that if I wasn't using Google voice
that I could keep my account and give up the phone number and could get a
new number at any time by logging into my Google voice account and picking a
new number.

Hi there. That is the call monitoring feature. It is enabled by default, but
depending on your situation some people turn it off. For example, the Google
voice number that I use as a home phone has that feature turned off. This way
when people call the house, the phones ringing like normal and people answer
like normal. When this feature is enabled, people who are not in your Google
contact list will be prompted to speak their name. When your phone rings, you
will then be given the chance to take the call by pressing one, or sending the
call to Boyceville by pressing too. Some people find this okay while others do
not like it.

You can also pick up the call
on one phone, say your land line phone, and then pick it up on your cell
phone as well, such as if you're going out the door during the call.

advantages and I could go on forever and ever since I am a huge fan of

more unless others are interested. I have an ObiTalk Phone bridge

2013-03-06 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi. It's accessible but kind of odd to reach. With window eyes I go out of
browse mode and tab several times past the inbox. There is a pulldown menu
which when selected will give me the choice of settings. I press enter on
settings and the page reloads with the settings section. In the settings
section there are various tabs like phone, voice mail and text, account
settings, and widgets. The phone section is where you choose what phones you
want to add to your number for the instant call forwarding. I believe this is
also the section where you can edit the type of phones that you add. The next
tab for calls is where you can choose to have the call filtering on or off. In
order to use Google voice as a land line with a phone bridge, it is recommended
that you have this feature turned off. Speaking of a phone bridge, in order to
use it successfully, you don't actually forward your Google voice number to a
real phone number. Instead you have the Google talk choice enabled. It is the
Google talk feature which does the actual routing to your phone bridge. I am
willing to do a podcast on this if it will help some.

Heyya Doc:
Basically google voice gives you a number which if you have an app on your
phone, g talk on your computer, or for the sighted can do from with in g
mail. You can send text messages make recieve phone calls through that
number. I use mine so I can throw it out there to listeners as a tip line
don't have to give out my cell number. You can also have it forwarded to any
phone number that you may have so that you can answer it there. So, let's
say you've added your iPhone, your home phone, perhaps one more, it'll
ring them all you can answer it anywhere. Hope that this helps.

Another feature I like about Google voice is that it will perform voice
recognition on any messages left in your voice mail and send you a text

I don't use these features myself, but you can decide if you'll answer a
call or send it to voice mail. You can even listen to someone leaving
the voice mail and decide to pick it up. You can also pick up the call
on one phone, say your land line phone, and then pick it up on your cell
phone as well, such as if you're going out the door during the call.

 it on my phone?

When you sign up with Google voice, you get a phone number. People can
call this number or send it text messages. you can use the Google Voice
app on your iPhone to read these text messages or send text messages
from this number.

When someone calls your Google Voice number, you can have it ring
several numbers, such as your home number, your office number and your
mobile number. You can answer the call from any of these phones. You can
also go into the Google Voice app and place a call from this number.

You can check your voice mail with a phone, web site or the Google Voice
app. Google voice also performs speech recognition on the message, so
you can just read the text of the message someone left you.

Hi Stacey, no there is not. iMessages works via the Apple ID, but text
messages work via your cell phone carrier. Now, if you have a Google
Voice number and you are using a Google Voice app, then you can get
text
messages to either device, but it wouldn't be in the same messages
app.

Yes, it is. It will work only in the US and only US numbers can be ported.
The process is pretty simple if I recall correctly.

Re: Google Voice

2012-05-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, if your contacts are living only in your iPHone, and not in the
cloud, you should still be able to use them, but you will have to use
the GV Connect App. I personally find it superior to the free Google
Voice app. However if you want to get your contacts into Google itself,
you can go to http://contacts.google.com and sign in, then you can
import them from a csv file. It may take some work, but once you have it
done, it's very nice. I took it a step further and just have my iPhone
sync contacts from Google and so if I ever restore my phone, or upgrade
it, or change it, I can just sync from Google again and all my contacts
are there for voice, email, and whatever else.

Good luck.
