Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Hi Annie, Someone has mentioned that they thought their Sonus being on, while the BV was trying to work, affected its navigation. So, if you do get one, and experience odd behaviour, it might be worth bearing this in mind. I am afraid, I do not understand enough about wifi to clarify the situation. Here is something that I have discovered which is useful: I have mentioned that the only bit of the app, that i have noticed as not being accessible, is the battery status. Well, as a work around, I took a screenshot of the Neato app, which shows the battery status, but VO can't see it, and sent it off to FaceBook. Very quickly, I got responses telling me that the battery was fully charged. So, if nothing else, we can always do this. I do have hopes though, because, there is one button that VO always says "dimmed" and nothing else, which I think is the battery status icon, so, VO sees something, just can't interpret it yet. Good luck to all! Hi Annie, You shouldn't have to worry about your router, it should connect to whatever device and normally 2.4 Ghz is actually better with respect to signal quality, only thing is that if there are lots of 2.4 Ghz devices there can sometimes be interference. It actually only takes about 1 minute, or less, to set up the wifi on the vac, but you then have to do some stuff on your phone. All this, we can do, no problem, but, if it goes wrong, as with me, first time (putting in the password to the wifi wrongly) or as it did with Marie, you might need to get the sighted assistant to set up the wifi again on the Bot. What we need is someone who can see well enough and has patience enough (my partner only qualifies on one front, so he's no use to me for this!) because, I think that each screen of the touch screen is both simple and prefixed. I think we could make a sort of template with dots, rather like the speed-dots screen protectors, the might make it possible for someone with no sight to set up the wifi, but this is only an idea at the moment. Would it be at all possible for you to find someone for 10 minutes? Or, if you are fairly dexterous, using Be My Eyes, or, better still, with the customer support on a facetime call, you might (but I haven't tried it, will do so later) be able to have your finger directed to the right spot. I think, all in all, it only takes about 3/4 spots to be touched, but you cannot touch the screen, or you will mess it up, you must only touch the exact places. Oh! What a long and unuseful response! In short, if you possibly can, get some help, otherwise, you may well feel extremely disappointed and frustrated. If someone else here, who has one of these lovely Bots, can chime in with something more positive to say, I do hope they do. I will finish with this though, once set up, the bot will hold that setting unless someone changes it. For this reason, I try not to touch the touch screen. Hi Sandra. Yes I would love one of these vacuum cleaners, I need sighted assistance for vacuum cleaning, and if that could be saved sometimes, it could mean a little more freedom to me. My only problem now is if I would get in trouble with all my 5 ghz attached items. The 2.4 ghz is not working as good as the 5 ghz network. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Annie, OK! I have just taken a much closer look at the touch screen on the BotVac Connected. I had my, very impatient, partner look over my shoulder. Firstly, I discovered that it isn't a touch screen at all! The screen, whichis about 3 inches/8 cm would that be? square, is only a display. Immediately to the right and near to the top of the screen, there is an up-arrow, this is touch/pressure sensitive. Also, to the right, but lower down, is a down-arrow, also touch sensitive. A little lower down, still to the right of the screen, is a left pointing arrow. Finally, there is a sort of "bar" marked, directly beneath the screen, in the centre. So, the Bot is menu driven. You either go up or down the lists with the arrows and select the one you want with the "bar" beneath the screen. The left arrow takes you back through the screen pages until you reach home. You can press this left/home arrow as many times as you like, because it will stop changing the page, once you have reached home. Unfortunately, in all the other lists, such as 'settings" these are circular, so, once you reach the last in the list it starts again with the first option, possible to get lost in these!! I got my, ex-partner, to put some bits of "bling" (you know the plastic glittery stuff that kids use to customise their phones/faces etc? He stuck them directly on the arrows and the bar. However, even with the plastic bling (mine are like little pearls) as soon as I touch them, it triggers off the touch/pressure sensitive arrow. Even if I am extra careful, I find it very tricky to control and not set off, by accident these arrows. They do make a sound though, so you do know when you have activated one. The good news is: you have to press that bar before anything is activated or set. Where am i going with all this, too much information? I see that we have just 4 buttons (for want of a better description). If these buttons/arrows were tactile, at a pinch, we could set the wifi up without sighted help. In order to put the tactile markers on, we need sighted help, as the arrows are not feelable. What I am thinking, for you is this: if I can think of a solution, using cardboard, with cut-outs, which could be placed on top of the Bot, just for the set-up of the wifi, could you do it? I think, YES! From the home screen, which is where you should be upon start-up, I think, you would use the down arrow 3 times to get to the third option which is "settings". Then use the Bar to go into it. then use the down arrow again till you hit wifi, but can't remember how many times, just musing here at the moment Once over wifi, hit the bar again and finish withthe left arrow twice to take you home and you are done!!! You see, it is not difficult, the only trick is not setting off arrow movement and losing your place in the list. I think, if you were very dexterous, it would be possible to do this with sighted help through Be My Eyes, but better with the help from Neato support as they could direct you in the right direction in case of an accidental triggering, which, I have to say, is almost unavoidable!! I am not going to ask if this helps, I know it hasn't, really I am just musing. It is, for example, useful to understand that the screen itself is not touch sensitive. These are, if you like, hardware buttons, and so, should be accessible via the app, but that still wouldn't help, as you need the wifi in order to use the app. Argh! Let me think some more Sandy (very challenged!) sent from the dark side of the moon > On 1 Jul 2016, at 10:29, Annie Skov Nielsen> wrote: > > Hi Sandra and all. > > I am concidering buying one of these vacuum cleaners, but can we connect it > to the wifi the first time or do that require sighted assistance? Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Annie, As things stand, at the moment, we do need sighted assistance to set up the wifi. The person doesn't need to be tech savvy, but the touch screen is not at all accessible. I would estimate, so long as your router is using the 250 and not the 500 channel, (Annie, I probably have put that wrong and even the numbers are only approximates, but, basically, routers run on two different levels, most, however, seem to be using the right one for the Vacuum so, worth checking this out first?) going back to my original sentence, so long as your router is right, I estimate that you should only need this sighted assistance for about 10 minutes. Hi Sandra and all. I am concidering buying one of these vacuum cleaners, but can we connect it to the wifi the first time or do that require sighted assistance? I do not have any sighted assistance, so it would be important for me that I can connect it myself. My bot vac runs under my desk. I have wires running aginst the wall, multiple wires actually. It has not sucked them up or unplugged them at all. Some thick, some thin from speaker wires. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jim Ruby Sent: Monday, June 27, 2016 10:02 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility. Hi Zoe, Glad you like the sound of the BotVac, I certainly still like mine! I shall have a shot at answering your questions. Different types of flooring: I have wood, tile, Laminate and carpeting. I can't say that the Bot performs differently from floor to floor, but it just works! There are 2 types of brushes, which are very easy to change, One is like a squeegee, called the spiral blade brush, which, I find, is especially good for hard floors, but does a good job on carpets too! However, the other brush, the one which comes installed, is a mixture of squeegee blade and bristles. I think that this latter brush might be best for a deeper carpet brushing. I plan to use that one, say, once a week and see how that does. You were wondering about thresholds, I have various types of these, some are just a small step of about half an inch, while others are real thresholds, I.E., a sort of wooden strip, 5 inches across, which has a small up-step of a quarter of an inch, then a slope up and then down and a little fall-off, the Vac seems to take a run at it and clambers over!! I was standing very still, and the Bot climbed onto my foot, and then up my ankle! I'd say he got to about a 45 degree tip before I lost my nerve and ran off! It is like being harrassed by a big beetle! Getting onto rugs etc is no problem at all! One of the few times I got a message saying he was stuck, I found him rocking on top of the dog's rubber bone! So, I don't see a problem with your doorways. Mind you, When you get your Bot, you should have a little time to play with him and decide if it will work for you. Falling down stairs? This morning, I did my upstairs. When I did it first time, I was concerned lest he fall down. I already knew he had "cliff detection" (which I wish I had!!) but I wanted to be sure. This time I was busy elsewhere, so left him to it, with no problems. The really cool thing, I find, is that if you put him, say, upstairs, where there is no dock to go home to, he will go back, to the exact spot where you started him off. This means, you don't have to worry about finding him again! If you get into a habit of placing him in the same spot, you will always know where he is when he is quiet and finished. As far as accessibility goes, the app is well done and totally accessible, apart from the battery status, which VO can't recognise for some reason. Neither can the KNFB Reader app, as it is just a icon whith some indicator bars. I am still working on a work around for this!! You do get a few of the error messages, but not all. However, as Jeramy discovered, there is a work around for this which, in my opinion, is acceptable. Today, my internet went off and will probably, stay off until my partner gets back, so, firstly, I found the app could not find the Bot. So, I just used the Home button and it did its job for me. At one point, it stopped and "bling blonged" at me. I couldn't guess what was wrong! I felt sure I had emptied the bin, the brushes felt OK and the battery should have been fine. So, with no app and no internet, I had to get the KNFB Reader up (thank goodness it doesn't need the net to work!) took a shot of the screen on the Vac and managed to read, not perfectly, but well enough, that the bin needed emptying. I did this, though there wasn't anything in it! Maybe the act of carrying it upstairs sprinkled some loose dust on its sensors or something, but it then worked perfectly. So, if push comes to shove, An OCR app may do. I couldn't use BE My Eyes, because of the no net situation. Sorry for such a long reply, please ask anything you like about this, my new Pal! Sandy. Just thought I would give a little update on my first day with the Bot vac. There were a few hiccups along the way but we got it done. I still have trouble getting it to resume on it's own after getting stuck but from what you said, I may be moving it too much. But even though it took some time to finish, I am very pleased with the results. As far as I can tell, it did a great job of cleaning. I am sure the kinks will get smoothed out with using the app. I was not able to follow your directions to change from turbo to eco however. When I tap on the Ready to clean, nothing happens? I will play with it more until I get the hang of it hopefully. If not I will get help setting up the schedule and let it go on it's merry way. One more thing I want to add is that it was on sale at Best Buy for $629 instead of the usual $699, so I was happy with that. Marie r moderators directly rather than posting on the list itself. Sandy. PS If anyone, with no sight at all and one of these Vacs can tell me how they manage to dock it, manually, and be sure it is in the correct position, I would love to know how you do it! sent from the dark side of the moon > On 27 Jun 2016, at 15:54, zoe fiogkos <fiog...@rogers.com> wrote: > > Hi guys, I have been following this thread religiously because this gaget > sounds fantastic and for the most part accessible. RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Hi guys, I have been following this thread religiously because this gaget sounds fantastic and for the most part accessible. However I can't afford this right now but I'm hoping this will change sometime in the future, so I have some questions. My house is laminate flooring, tiles in the bathroom, carpet in the bedroom, and plastic vinil in the kitchen. Does this vacume distinguish between the different types of serfaces and vacume accordingly? Also the bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom have a small barrier in the doorways. I'm not sure how to explain this but there is a wide strip, like a small step separating the rooms from the laminate flooring in the livingroom dining room, can the vacume pass through these small barriers, can it somehow step over these seperaters? Also when I take it up stairs to another lecvel, will it know to vacume the whole level without falling down the stairs? Thanks for any help and feedback provided in advanced. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Hi Jeramy, Rule 1 with the BotVac, never use fluids! Never use the Vac on wet floors or carpets. So, no cleaning fluid etc. Spot clean is for hoovering a defined space. There are 2 settings of size for spot clean. 1. Approx 6 foot x 6 foot. 2. Approx 13 x 13 foot. The Bot will clean a square of floor, directly in front of it and, you can choose to do this once or have it do the area twice for a more intense clean. I think you could use it for a whole room, depending on the size of your room, or, as in my case, I might like to give a carpet an extra doing. For example, I have a couple of rugs, about 6 x 8 feet, if I put the Bot just central in front of one edge, and press the left, the spot clean, button, if I have set it to the smaller option, it should, pretty much do the whole rug and then finish. I might not want to do the whole house, as with the "clean the house" option. I have some rooms that are smaller than the 13 x 13 size and I might just want to do that room, I could use the spot clean for that. If I wanted to do a large room, I could set the bot down at one end of the room, let it do the larger spot clean and then move it to the other end, thus, doing the room in two parts. As for carpeting: I find the Bot to be very effective on carpets. Because most of my floors are hard, I prefer to use the squeegee brush, but this does do carpets well too! But to get a bit deaper, I change the brush to the one with bristles, every now and again. This, I think, is down to one's own situation/house/pets etc. But one thing is for sure, liquids of any kind, accidental or intentional, such as cleaning fluids or water, must not be present while the Bot is working. Sandy, Does spot clean work on carpet? If so, would you put some kind of cleaning fluid on the carpet first? or is spot clean just for hard floors? -Original Message- From: 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2016 3:57 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility. I know that, at first, while you are getting used to the Bot, it feels frustrating getting error messages that don't explain themselves via the app, and I am hoping that, as more of us use the BotVac, we can encourage an improvement in the app, but you soon learn that the error messages that you don't receive, are, in general, of three types, I.E. Bin needs emptying, Brushes need cleaning and Battery needs charging. This last one happened to me because, while I thought it was properly docked and charging, it had been knocked by the dog's ball slightly off. For now, I am using Be My Eyes when I get stuck, not the best solution, but useful nevertheless. However, in order to get the most out of BME, you do need to know what to ask your volunteer to look for. For example, when I was wanting to know the battery status, my helper couldn't see the screen. She said it looked blank, I had a little thought and pressed, just a short press, of the 'home" button, the one to the right of the handle, this turned the Bot on and my helper on BME could see the screen and read the status for me. > > Truly, this will sort itself, and you will learn how to deal with the Bot, where, at the moment, we cannot read for ourselves the screen. > > Always remember, just a press of that same button will start you Bot off, in its default setting, I.E. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Marie, 'tis midnight here, so I don't want to set my robot off. So, I shall be going from memory. When you are on the screen, in the app on your phone, you will see the name of your Bot. You will see "ready to clean", double-tap on that. In the new screen, you will see, Settings, then the name of hyour Bot, go back to ''settings", double-tap on that. Now you should be in a screen called '"cleansettings". You will then see, Eco, double-tap on that, flick again to the right and hear "turbo", blick again and hear "OK", double-tap on that and you have set it to Eco. Each time you begin a new cycle, it resets to Eco, I think, bu you soon get used to resetting it. If you have hard floors, eco and the squeegee brush works best in my opinion. The squeegee will work on carpets, but, I think, every now and again, the ther brush is called for. Well, I finally took it and put it back on the dock and left it there. In about 30 minutes it started up and began cleaning again. It has gone back to the dock twice and is there at the moment. Clean house in Turbo mode, and then return to dock. Please do keep us posted with your progress as other people are buying this Bot and we can all learn from each other!! Marie, The left button does the spot clean. As for it getting stuck, I have only had mine stuck twice, that I can remember, in both cases, I just moved the Bot just enough to free it and left it. After about 30 seconds, it started up again by itself. Not sure if this is typical or not. Early days for all of us By the way, have you sorted out how to change between Turbo and Eco yet? If you need directions, let me know, it took me a little while to spot it! RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Too bad about Be My Eyes. I'm not entirely sure on the buttons, but here's my take. The device screen is about the size and shape of a good-sized mailing lable. When looking at the machine with the long flat edge nearest your belly, the screen is at about 4 o'clock or 5 o'clock relative to the large round laser cap. When touching the screen, and bringing your finger down to the bottom: and slightly off the edge of the screenI think this button is the Select button. It's the button I hit twice after I clear an obstacle or brush jam when I don't have my app right at hand. On the right side of the screen, at the edge, are 3 buttons, which I think act as follows: Top right is Page forward on the Menu screen Middle right is move the highlighted text on the screen menu down 1 line to the next menu option. Lower right is Page back on the Menu screen. But, please confirm this with Sandy, sighted assistance, or trying again with Be My Eyes. I think Sandy mentioned that she has used Be My Eyes on occasion with her Neato. I ran into problems with just touching the buttons not knowing what was on the screen. Eyes are necessary, in my opinion. From my reading, this is true for all users, but especially for us, as not all notifications are sent to the app, some show up on the onboard screen and need to be read. I find it a bit concerning replacing the Bot on its dock, visually, you can tell by the lights that it is in the right position, but without the clues, hard to tell. So a quick way to be sure would be to do a "spot clean" by pressing one button, when it has finished, it will go home and play a tune and send a message. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Hi Jeramy and all interested in the BotVac app accessibility! My Bot just did the ground floor and returned itself to the dock. I heard the tune and got the message "I am done cleaning", then, I heard, what I now know to be an error sound, a sort of "bling blong" repeated a few times at a minute's interval. I have had this before and when it occurs at the end of a successful cycle of cleaning, I can be fairly sure it means the bin needs emptying . But, this time, upon seeing the error showing up in the app, I tapped on "more info" and, as Jeramy said, it took me straight to the appropriate webpage and he error showed up, as I had expected, "bin full' or some such. This is great! This little discovery has just extended accessibility of the app/BotVac enormously!! Now, just the setting up of the Wifi and the battery status and we are fully there!! RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Hi, So, I really didn't move the bot from the place it stopped. I just cleaned the brushes from some dog hairs and resumed. As for the error page, yes, it takes you directly to the right error page on the bot site. You can either flick right, or use the 2 finger gesture and swipe down and have it read the hole screen to you. But really, the first line of the error says it all. My brushes need cleaning. So, I knew just to feel for the brushes and remove what ever was clogging them. In this case was some dog hairs. My apartment is pretty bot ready too except one of the bathrooms. in one of my bathrooms, the bot can go around the toilet on one side, but always gets stuck on the other side and can't turn around lol. So, I just make sure either the door is closed, or I have something blocking the one side so it can't get stuck. Other then that, it just zooms all over the place. I really love it and was well worth the money. -Original Message- From: 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2016 7:37 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility. RE: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Actually, Yesterday I did get an error, and I was able to access it on my phone app. In the app, when the machine stopped running, in one of the settings, I forget where, it says "error". Next to it was a info button. I clicked on the info button. It then took me to the website for the bot, and I was able to flick right and read that the brushes needed to be cleaned. Once I did this, I then closed out of the internet, went back to the bot app, and found the play button and resumed cleaning. Might be a bit time consuming yeah, but it works. If you can't find the play button after fixing the error, one can just press the home button on the machine to resume. I have done that too. -Original Message- From: 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2016 6:56 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility. I bet you could use Be My Eyes or some other similar app like CrowdViz. I've been told by my family that the on-device screen is quite easy to read. It's worth a try, at any rate. I believe that has been check by my sister when she was here. It would be nice if the app could at least give you some idea of what the problem is instead of just saying it failed to connect and then tell you to look at the display\lay screen. I managed to get in touch with a young neighbor who is very tech savvy and he is coming over in a while to see what he can do. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
marie, I am just guessing here, but might it be your wifi? In the documentation, it says that your router needs to use the 2. something and not 5. something. If your sister set it up and then you continued with the process, the problem would not have become evident until the Bot tried to connect. I did always say that the connection to the wifi was not accessible to us. If it is your router, I think, and I may be wrong, that you can change the settings on the router. If you use the app and go to "help" in the app, the frequently asked questions deals with router issues. If it is a router issue, it is not one of accessibility, but one that affects all! Remember, for a basic house clean, I.E., do all of one floor, you can just press the button to the right of the handle, with the straight edge nearest to you, you may hear a musical sound, then, if nothing happens, press it again, and the Bot should begin its work. I am sorry you are experiencing these frustrations, but, so long as you can sort out your router issues, if that is the problem, you should be happy. However, I have to say this: there is a settling in period. You may, for example, find that the Bot gets stuck a lot at the beginning, this is because, all of these Bots need the right environment. So, where they get stuck, you deal with the problem, they are smart, but you are smarter!! Good luck and keep us posted. Re: Small update on the BotVac app accessibility.
Well I think you might have underestimated the ease of getting connected to the WyFy. I had my sister turn it on and then thought I would be able to complete the process with the app. I got through all the steps up to waiting the 3 minutes for it to connect. At the end of that, I got the message that it failed to connect with no explanation except to check the display screen. If I could see the display screen I would not need the app. So I am a bit frustrated now with no sighted assistance available and no way to get started. When I try to repeat the process, the Neato no longer shows up as an access point on the WyFy settings? any suggestions? Hi all, After a little panic on my part, i now find I can use the app a little better! i just managed to change Turbo to Eco. I just did a spot clean, when it cleans an area, either 2 meters x 2 meters or 4 meters x 4 meters. Then it returns to base. I did this by just pressing a button, so very easy. Useful for rugs or single rooms. My issues with my house network wifi settings are almost resolved, touch wood. I am discovering that the best way to deal with the vac is to let it do its own thing, I.E., "clean house" either with the app or just press a button, there are only two buttons, and then leaving it to finish.
Hi, Yes! Pressing the 'home" button for 15 seconds works for me. Because we turn our wifi off at night, I do have to do this each morning, to get the Vac online. If I don't turn the wifi off, then the vac stays connected. Sometimes, the app reports "off line" eroniously, and it is suggested that you should close the app from the app switcher and restart it. Plus, remember, it will depend upon your wifi strength, the vac may take up to 3 minutes to connect. The main thing is this: we do need sighted help to initially enable wifi, by way of the menu system on the Bot itself. However, once this is done, it shouldn't need doing again, if the Bot is off line, then the long, 15 second, press of the home button will reset it and ti should find the wifi. To date, the only thing I cannot access with the app is the battery status. This does show up on the app, but it is an image, with indicator bars, I think. So, no writing, nothing to VO to read. I tried a screen-shot with KNFB Reader, but it couldn't do anything with it, as there are no letters or numbers. I have contacted the Neato support, at the moment, they say it is a Voice-Over issue. I am trying to talk with their app developers to get them to look at it, but no success as yet. Perhaps, if others who use this vacuum, could raise the issue too, we might get somewhere. Not knowing the battery status is not so important as the vac takes itself back to the dock when it needs to, but, on rare occasions, I have to put the vac on the dock by hand and I am never sure if it has engaged properly. So, I would love to be able to check on battery status and if it is charging. Apart from this little niggle, I am finding the BotVac to be an excellent cleaner. Try not to watch it too much, your very presence will affect its mapping. Best, by far, to let it do its own thing!! Sometimes it seems to be missing something, as if it has forgotten, but, I find, it does, generally, go back and complete its task. It is brilliant at returning to the place it started, even, upstairs, where the dock is not, it returns exactly where I started it. So, easy to find. Lastly, often, when I start the app, I may see "off line", but, if I reread the screen, that status is changed to "ready to clean". Hope you enjoy your new toy and don't have too many problems!! Try holding down the Home button for 15 seconds. This is the button along the top edge of the device, near the border of the flat edge. It's the button on the right when looking from the front flat edge. That may help reconnect to your WiFi.
